the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v not_o this_o strength_n and_o whatsoever_o strength_n a_o man_n may_v seem_v to_o have_v to_o himself_o if_o it_o proceed_v not_o from_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v no_o true_a strength_n but_o a_o half_a and_o counterfeit_a seem_a strength_n for_o a_o man_n may_v thus_o argue_v from_o the_o cause_n to_o the_o effect_n that_o that_o be_v the_o true_a cause_n of_o to_o do_v more_o for_o god_n then_o for_o himself_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v much_o forget_v among_o we_o and_o by_o those_o who_o we_o call_v godly_a man_n they_o forget_v it_o they_o think_v not_o what_o they_o have_v to_o do_v for_o the_o lord_n you_o have_v many_o opportunity_n afford_v to_o you_o remember_v that_o to_o be_v a_o godly_a man_n be_v as_o you_o have_v opportunity_n as_o to_o do_v much_o for_o god_n so_o to_o do_v much_o to_o he_o god_n observe_v what_o talent_n every_o man_n have_v what_o occasion_n what_o hint_n every_o man_n have_v to_o do_v he_o service_n what_o advantage_n what_o power_n he_o have_v in_o his_o hand_n and_o he_o look_v that_o all_o these_o shall_v be_v improve_v for_o his_o advantage_n it_o be_v no_o better_a than_o thievery_n and_o robbery_n to_o take_v these_o from_o god_n and_o to_o bestow_v they_o upon_o yourselves_o as_o you_o reckon_v it_o in_o a_o steward_n to_o be_v the_o great_a theft_n to_o turn_v his_o master_n good_a and_o benefit_n to_o his_o own_o profit_n so_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v have_v a_o eye_n to_o himself_o in_o all_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v a_o extreme_a robbery_n of_o god_n for_o you_o know_v you_o shall_v use_v they_o all_o for_o god_n and_o the_o more_o you_o do_v for_o he_o for_o he_o see_v it_o and_o observe_v it_o will_v recompense_v every_o man_n a_o hundred_o fold_n no_o man_n pay_v wage_n so_o as_o he_o do_v but_o we_o will_v not_o stand_v to_o urge_v this_o because_o i_o will_v not_o be_v keep_v from_o handle_v that_o which_o be_v the_o main_a scope_n of_o this_o text_n have_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n but_o deny_v the_o power_n thereof_o the_o second_o point_n that_o we_o will_v deliver_v to_o you_o it_o lie_v so_o plain_a that_o there_o need_v no_o further_o open_v of_o the_o text_n for_o the_o gather_n of_o it_o it_o be_v this_o that_o most_o man_n have_v but_o a_o form_n of_o godliness_n though_o the_o lord_n require_v godliness_n the_o power_n of_o it_o we_o will_v even_o deliver_v it_o plain_o as_o it_o lie_v it_o be_v a_o point_n that_o need_v no_o proof_n and_o i_o wish_v it_o do_v i_o wish_v that_o it_o be_v not_o write_v in_o capital_a letter_n in_o the_o forehead_n of_o most_o man_n that_o he_o that_o run_v may_v read_v it_o for_o if_o we_o look_v about_o we_o we_o shall_v see_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n every_o where_o but_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o it_o be_v exceed_o rare_a our_o business_n will_v be_v rather_o to_o consider_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o disease_n what_o the_o reason_n be_v that_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n be_v to_o be_v find_v frequent_o enough_o and_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o godliness_n be_v so_o rare_a and_o so_o seldom_o to_o be_v see_v and_o we_o shall_v find_v these_o reason_n of_o it_o first_o man_n will_v have_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n because_o there_o 16_o must_v be_v something_o to_o satisfy_v that_o conscience_n which_o every_o man_n have_v for_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a conscience_n which_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o rom._n 2._o 16._o speak_v of_o the_o gentile_n he_o say_v this_o of_o they_o their_o thought_n accuse_v or_o excuse_v one_o another_o so_o that_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a conscience_n even_o in_o man_n that_o yet_o know_v not_o god_n aright_o now_o that_o natural_a conscience_n must_v have_v something_o to_o satisfy_v it_o it_o will_v not_o be_v at_o rest_n else_o now_o because_o man_n be_v unable_a to_o judge_v and_o discern_v aright_o therefore_o a_o form_n of_o godliness_n be_v enough_o for_o they_o they_o be_v quiet_v and_o satisfy_v and_o content_v with_o that_o although_o they_o have_v not_o the_o power_n thereof_o itself_o even_o as_o child_n you_o know_v be_v content_v with_o counter_n because_o they_o do_v not_o know_v their_o worth_n satan_n deal_v with_o we_o in_o this_o case_n as_o we_o do_v with_o they_o when_o they_o cry_v and_o be_v unquiet_a such_o flight_n thing_n of_o no_o moment_n content_v we_o though_o they_o be_v as_o empty_a and_o as_o beggarly_a as_o counter_n and_o rattle_v because_o man_n be_v not_o able_a to_o judge_v what_o the_o conscience_n will_v have_v something_o it_o must_v have_v to_o satisfy_v it_o he_o give_v we_o that_o which_o be_v but_o a_o form_n which_o be_v but_o counterfeit_n that_o have_v not_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o godliness_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o man_n be_v content_v with_o it_o second_o another_o cause_n why_o the_o form_n be_v find_v every_o easy_a where_o but_o not_o the_o power_n it_o be_v because_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n be_v very_o easy_a but_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o it_o be_v very_o hard_a and_o difficult_a it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n wherein_o the_o show_n and_o the_o form_n consist_v it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o come_v to_o church_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n to_o here_o prayer_n it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o read_v a_o prayer_n every_o day_n in_o private_a it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o have_v such_o a_o formality_n in_o serve_v of_o god_n these_o be_v thing_n that_o be_v do_v with_o facility_n but_o come_v now_o to_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o godliness_n that_o mortify_v thy_o lust_n that_o subdue_v
thou_o and_o keep_v in_o thy_o affection_n that_o search_v thy_o heart_n and_o thy_o inward_a intention_n that_o require_v other_o aim_n and_o end_n it_o be_v another_o thing_n to_o do_v this_o it_o be_v a_o very_a hard_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o cross_v himself_o to_o deny_v himself_o let_v any_o man_n examine_v himself_o in_o those_o thing_n to_o which_o he_o be_v strong_o incline_v when_o he_o shall_v find_v in_o himself_o that_o he_o have_v such_o and_o such_o opportunity_n in_o such_o and_o such_o company_n in_o such_o and_o such_o occasion_n how_o hard_o a_o thing_n it_o be_v for_o he_o now_o to_o stick_v to_o the_o rule_n and_o to_o subdue_v and_o mortify_v his_o sinful_a lust_n i_o say_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n do_v this_o and_o again_o it_o do_v not_o suffer_v you_o to_o do_v holy_a duty_n in_o a_o customary_a manner_n but_o you_o do_v they_o in_o another_o manner_n you_o do_v not_o only_o pray_v but_o your_o prayer_n will_v be_v frequent_a and_o fervent_a and_o so_o for_o hear_v your_o hear_n will_v be_v in_o another_o manner_n it_o will_v be_v hard_a and_o difficult_a though_o the_o form_n be_v easy_a and_o because_o it_o be_v easy_a therefore_o it_o be_v that_o man_n content_v themselves_o only_o with_o a_o form_n of_o religion_n but_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o it_o again_o three_o another_o cause_n of_o it_o be_v this_o satan_n resist_v form_n you_o not_o when_o there_o be_v but_o a_o form_n nor_o the_o world_n oppose_v against_o thou_o when_o there_o be_v but_o a_o form_n for_o satan_n know_v that_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n alone_o will_v never_o hurt_v he_o and_o therefore_o he_o do_v not_o trouble_v man_n nor_o be_v he_o busy_a to_o withdraw_v man_n out_o of_o that_o form_n by_o any_o temptation_n but_o now_o when_o he_o come_v to_o a_o man_n that_o set_v upon_o godliness_n indeed_o there_o he_o will_v not_o be_v idle_a but_o be_v ready_a to_o betray_v he_o every_o way_n and_o will_v leave_v no_o temptation_n unattempted_a because_o he_o know_v that_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n pluck_v a_o man_n out_o of_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n and_o as_o satan_n resist_v not_o so_o the_o world_n do_v not_o much_o resist_v it_o because_o it_o do_v not_o much_o cross_n the_o world_n for_o the_o world_n will_v sure_o resist_v that_o which_o cross_v it_o by_o the_o world_n i_o mean_v the_o multitude_n of_o man_n the_o common_a sort_n of_o man_n i_o say_v such_o as_o these_o resist_v not_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n because_o it_o cross_v they_o not_o indeed_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o godliness_n be_v very_o cross_a to_o the_o world_n those_o that_o be_v strict_a to_o practice_v indeed_o according_a to_o their_o knowledge_n that_o have_v religion_n not_o only_o in_o show_n but_o in_o truth_n that_o walk_v exact_o and_o precise_o according_a to_o the_o rule_n these_o man_n go_v a_o contrary_a course_n to_o the_o world_n they_o go_v against_o the_o crowd_n and_o against_o the_o stream_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o the_o crowd_n of_o the_o world_n go_v against_o they_o for_o the_o world_n love_v she_o own_o now_o a_o form_n of_o godliness_n may_v be_v notwithstanding_o a_o man_n may_v be_v the_o world_n own_o but_o when_o a_o man_n have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n he_o be_v not_o the_o world_n own_o but_o he_o be_v another_o and_o therefore_o be_v it_o that_o man_n hate_v and_o oppose_v and_o cry_v down_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n hence_o it_o be_v too_o that_o man_n be_v so_o discourage_v in_o labour_v after_o the_o power_n and_o that_o it_o be_v so_o rare_a among_o man_n because_o the_o world_n so_o oppose_v and_o hate_v it_o and_o not_o only_o so_o this_o be_v not_o all_o but_o the_o flesh_n resist_v it_o the_o flesh_n do_v not_o much_o resist_v the_o form_n because_o there_o be_v no_o great_a contrariety_n between_o the_o form_n and_o the_o flesh_n therefore_o you_o see_v carnal_a man_n papist_n etc._n etc._n that_o know_v not_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n they_o will_v be_v very_o exact_a in_o all_o formal_a performance_n of_o duty_n but_o now_o the_o flesh_n resist_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n it_o run_v with_o a_o strong_a stream_n against_o it_o it_o fight_v against_o it_o so_o that_o hence_o it_o be_v you_o see_v that_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n be_v so_o rare_a because_o that_o the_o devil_n the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n resist_v the_o power_n and_o they_o do_v not_o so_o to_o the_o form_n and_o this_o be_v the_o three_o cause_n why_o the_o form_n be_v so_o common_a and_o the_o power_n and_o life_n be_v so_o rare_a and_o seldom_o find_v among_o we_o we_o will_v add_v yet_o one_o cause_n more_o of_o this_o general_a disease_n why_o we_o have_v the_o form_n without_o the_o power_n that_o be_v nature_n because_o in_o man_n there_o be_v a_o common_a light_n which_o will_v go_v so_o far_o as_o to_o approve_v of_o the_o formality_n of_o religion_n but_o they_o want_v so_o much_o light_n as_o to_o distinguish_v of_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o religion_n to_o approve_v that_o i_o speak_v now_o of_o a_o man_n own_o heart_n not_o of_o other_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n in_o religion_n there_o be_v a_o formality_n a_o common_a care_n of_o worship_v god_n a_o form_n of_o godliness_n and_o there_o be_v beside_o this_o the_o life_n and_o the_o power_n that_o which_o be_v call_v the_o new_a creature_n that_o which_o be_v call_v regeneration_n that_o which_o be_v call_v the_o change_n of_o the_o heart_n now_o a_o man_n that_o have_v the_o common_a light_n that_o be_v not_o yet_o sanctify_v he_o can_v go_v so_o far_o as_o to_o approve_v the_o first_o to_o say_v it_o be_v good_a in_o i_o and_o it_o be_v good_a in_o other_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o god_n shall_v be_v worship_v something_o shall_v be_v do_v a_o man_n have_v as_o much_o light_n as_o the_o moral_a law_n and_o as_o a_o common_a illumination_n can_v afford_v he_o and_o therefore_o we_o see_v man_n that_o be_v not_o yet_o regenerate_v that_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o the_o life_n of_o religion_n they_o can_v approve_v of_o moral_a honesty_n of_o just_a deal_n between_o man_n and_o man_n of_o a_o common_a care_n of_o serve_v of_o god_n which_o indeed_o be_v good_a and_o excellent_a only_o we_o find_v fault_n with_o this_o that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o it_o be_v but_o a_o form_n now_o i_o say_v the_o common_a light_n which_o every_o man_n have_v will_v go_v so_o far_o as_o to_o approve_v this_o but_o come_v now_o to_o the_o life_n and_o power_n there_o be_v require_v a_o sanctify_a light_n a_o peculiar_a light_n which_o be_v give_v but_o to_o few_o no_o man_n have_v it_o till_o he_o be_v regenerate_v and_o bear_v again_o till_o god_n have_v put_v it_o into_o he_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n now_o because_o this_o light_n be_v rare_a it_o be_v but_o thin_a sow_v hence_o it_o be_v that_o there_o be_v but_o few_o that_o find_v out_o the_o beauty_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n but_o rather_o dislike_v it_o and_o disapprove_v it_o because_o they_o have_v not_o light_a enough_o to_o see_v it_o but_o the_o common_a light_n be_v frequent_a and_o ordinary_a and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n be_v common_a whereas_o the_o life_n and_o power_n be_v rare_a and_o you_o may_v add_v this_o to_o it_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o man_n be_v so_o rich_a of_o it_o every_o man_n wonder_n at_o it_o as_o thing_n that_o be_v rare_a every_o man_n wonder_n at_o they_o as_o we_o do_v at_o new_a fashion_n as_o man_n gaze_v at_o new_a star_n and_o comet_n the_o form_n because_o it_o be_v common_a it_o be_v therefore_o approve_a it_o pass_v among_o man_n without_o wonder_v but_o the_o other_o be_v rare_a and_o seldom_o find_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v gaze_v at_o and_o wonder_v at_o and_o point_v at_o but_o though_o this_o be_v common_a among_o man_n and_o bring_v man_n but_o to_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n yet_o the_o lord_n require_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n it_o be_v not_o the_o form_n alone_o that_o god_n regard_v and_o what_o need_v we_o add_v any_o reason_n for_o this_o you_o know_v man_n regard_v not_o compliment_n and_o show_v they_o look_v to_o reality_n therefore_o we_o will_v rather_o hasten_v to_o make_v some_o use_n of_o it_o if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o the_o
