be_v their_o grief_n weigh_v and_o their_o misery_n lay_v together_o in_o the_o balance_n it_o will_v be_v heavy_a than_o the_o sand_n of_o the_o sea_n be_v i_o able_a to_o conceive_v they_o as_o other_o sometime_o feel_v they_o and_o to_o think_v they_o as_o other_o often_o find_v they_o in_o themselves_o yet_o can_v i_o never_o sufficient_o describe_v they_o well_o i_o may_v in_o some_o sort_n touch_v they_o but_o they_o only_o can_v sound_v the_o depth_n and_o reach_v the_o bottom_n of_o these_o extremity_n which_o have_v sometime_o taste_v and_o in_o some_o measure_n feel_v the_o bitterness_n of_o this_o gall_n and_o wormwood_n notwithstanding_o as_o by_o the_o outward_a appearance_n of_o the_o wound_n the_o inward_a pain_n may_v be_v conjecture_v and_o by_o the_o external_a struggle_n we_o may_v guess_v the_o internal_a conflict_n effect_n the_o greatness_n of_o these_o extremity_n discern_v in_o part_n by_o the_o effect_n so_o likewise_o by_o the_o effect_n that_o come_v from_o the_o sorrow_n of_o sin_n appear_v outward_o in_o the_o body_n we_o may_v in_o some_o sort_n learn_v how_o great_a that_o grief_n and_o anguish_n be_v that_o possess_v the_o heart_n within_o for_o beside_o the_o plaint_n before_o set_v down_o he_o oftentimes_o bedew_v his_o face_n with_o tear_n and_o weep_a the_o body_n also_o oftentimes_o wax_v lean_a and_o wan_a fret_v away_o alike_o in_o all_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o the_o present_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n within_o they_o and_o the_o pulse_n of_o faith_n to_o move_v and_o beat_v in_o their_o heart_n they_o faith_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o for_o infirmity_n be_v not_o able_a to_o move_v and_o stir_v itself_o for_o as_o the_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o swoon_n swoon_n such_o who_o faith_n be_v weak_a compare_v to_o a_o man_n in_o a_o swoon_n or_o he_o who_o part_n be_v benumb_v with_o some_o extreme_a cold_a or_o sudden_a stroke_n though_o there_o be_v a_o life_n still_o remain_v in_o they_o yet_o such_o be_v their_o infirmity_n that_o they_o seem_v as_o dead_a and_o be_v unable_a to_o perform_v the_o function_n that_o belong_v unto_o a_o live_a body_n even_o so_o this_o faith_n though_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v a_o faith_n and_o have_v a_o life_n in_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o benumb_a with_o the_o chill_a cold_a of_o sin_n and_o astonish_v with_o the_o stroke_n of_o our_o natural_a imperfection_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o utter_o void_a of_o vital_a motion_n so_o that_o sin_n unto_o this_o weak_a and_o waver_a soul_n be_v even_o as_o meat_n be_v oftentimes_o to_o he_o that_o surfete_v he_o eat_v it_o with_o delight_n and_o take_v pleasure_n in_o it_o yet_o when_o his_o stomach_n come_v to_o digest_v and_o work_v upon_o it_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o overcome_v the_o abundance_n of_o unconcoct_v humour_n the_o whole_a body_n be_v sick_a and_o weaken_a in_o every_o part_n and_o faculty_n so_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v glut_v and_o
repentance_n 3._o he_o must_v not_o so_o much_o consider_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o measure_n as_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o repentance_n &_o that_o with_o good_a advice_n what_o the_o thing_n be_v whereat_o we_o do_v aim_n and_o which_o we_o labour_v especial_o to_o search_v after_o and_o to_o find_v out_o in_o this_o trial_n and_o examination_n for_o even_o in_o this_o point_n also_o there_o not_o to_o be_v prescribe_v and_o appoint_v in_o what_o mcasure_n he_o shall_v give_v the_o same_o to_o every_o one_o and_o second_o for_o that_o it_o please_v he_o to_o be_v so_o gracious_a and_o favourable_a as_o to_o accept_v these_o imperfection_n in_o good_a part_n at_o thy_o hand_n for_o the_o which_o thou_o be_v not_o only_o to_o be_v thankful_a to_o he_o at_o all_o time_n but_o have_v first_o touch_v he_o that_o be_v but_o young_a and_o very_a tender_a in_o the_o womb_n of_o regeneration_n and_o not_o full_o form_v and_o become_v a_o renew_a creature_n in_o christ_n no_o marvel_v if_o he_o think_v strange_a of_o this_o distrust_n within_o himself_o or_o if_o that_o he_o complain_v of_o the_o weakness_n and_o want_n of_o faith_n in_o himself_o for_o you_o must_v
and_o therefore_o howsoever_o other_o may_v gather_v fruit_n of_o your_o godly_a say_n yet_o you_o may_v by_o this_o sure_o know_v that_o no_o gain_n do_v thereby_o grow_v unto_o i_o answ_n concern_v that_o sure_o such_o lewdness_n and_o careless_a kind_n of_o live_v can_v never_o befall_v the_o call_v of_o god_n that_o so_o long_o so_o lewd_o and_o so_o careless_o they_o shall_v pass_v away_o their_o time_n and_o spend_v all_o their_o day_n without_o all_o remorse_n and_o feeling_n as_o hitherto_o thou_o have_v do_v answ_n hereunto_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o position_n stand_v on_o a_o regeneration_n to_o show_v forth_o themselves_o in_o thou_o if_o not_o i_o say_v then_o that_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n to_o see_v the_o man_n of_o god_n that_o be_v as_o yet_o unregenerate_a to_o drench_v himself_o so_o deep_o in_o sin_n for_o until_o he_o feel_v these_o token_n in_o some_o part_n appear_v in_o he_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o in_o wicked_a and_o disorder_a course_n of_o life_n there_o be_v little_a or_o no_o difference_n at_o all_o to_o be_v find_v betwixt_o he_o and_o the_o reprobate_n and_o yet_o since_o the_o time_n and_o also_o the_o manner_n of_o god_n calling_n be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v to_o we_o so_o uncertain_a and_o unknown_a i_o affirm_v that_o all_o this_o notwithstanding_o a_o man_n may_v in_o time_n be_v call_v and_o therefore_o he_o be_v not_o so_o desperate_o to_o judge_v of_o himself_o and_o again_o if_o it_o so_o be_v that_o thou_o have_v selt_z faith_n in_o her_o fruit_n more_o or_o less_o already_o work_v in_o thou_o and_o have_v perceive_v some_o sign_n of_o true_a repentance_n heretofore_o to_o have_v show_v forth_o themselves_o in_o thou_o and_o yet_o thou_o be_v thus_o far_o as_o appear_v by_o thy_o speech_n fall_v back_o and_o relapse_v yet_o can_v this_o thy_o fall_n be_v no_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o draw_v thou_o to_o give_v such_o a_o dreadful_a doom_n of_o thy_o estate_n my_o reason_n be_v see_v the_o gift_n &_o grace_n of_o god_n not_o always_o alike_o see_v because_o these_o gift_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v not_o always_o see_v in_o such_o a_o high_a and_o flourish_a manner_n as_o man_n do_v dream_v after_o but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v of_o faith_n that_o it_o do_v sometime_o ebb_n and_o sometime_o flow_v so_o i_o assirme_v of_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n also_o that_o they_o be_v sometime_o more_o and_o sometime_o less_o and_o as_o faith_n itself_o sometime_o grow_v to_o be_v so_o weak_a and_o feeble_a that_o it_o show_v not_o itself_o at_o all_o but_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o you_o will_v say_v even_o dead_a and_o yet_o have_v a_o hide_a life_n still_o remain_v in_o it_o so_o it_o be_v also_o with_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o hereupon_o it_o be_v that_o we_o read_v of_o diverse_a the_o servant_n of_o god_n as_o noah_n lot_n david_n peter_n and_o other_o who_o faith_n be_v sometime_o bring_v to_o so_o low_a a_o ebb_n and_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o sometime_o in_o they_o prevail_v so_o much_o and_o so_o mighty_o that_o if_o we_o respect_v their_o do_n for_o the_o time_n they_o seem_v to_o have_v little_a or_o no_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o sin_n at_o all_o but_o as_o man_n no_o whit_n regenerate_v do_v give_v themselves_o over_o to_o commit_v of_o sin_n and_o those_o most_o odious_a and_o abominable_a and_o without_o any_o respect_n do_v show_v and_o behave_v themselves_o as_o man_n secure_a and_o careless_a for_o the_o time_n which_o time_n of_o their_o secure_a loose_a and_o sinful_a manner_n of_o life_n i_o may_v just_o call_v the_o time_n of_o god_n desertion_n for_o that_o he_o do_v as_o it_o be_v withdraw_v from_o they_o the_o lively_a and_o effectual_a work_n and_o operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n permit_v satan_n and_o the_o flesh_n for_o a_o time_n to_o have_v the_o sovereignty_n and_o dominion_n over_o they_o and_o for_o that_o the_o time_n also_o of_o this_o desertion_n as_o experience_n teach_v be_v not_o alike_o to_o all_o but_o in_o some_o be_v of_o short_a and_o in_o other_o of_o a_o long_a continuance_n as_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o wisdom_n shall_v appoint_v i_o therefore_o conclude_v that_o this_o say_a time_n of_o desertion_n may_v not_o be_v any_o cause_n so_o hardly_o to_o judge_v of_o the_o state_n of_o any_o now_o whereas_o this_o decrease_n in_o some_o be_v so_o small_a not_o some_o misdoubt_v themselves_o without_o cause_n there_o be_v a_o continual_a motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o though_o they_o perceive_v it_o not_o that_o there_o be_v a_o continual_a motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o be_v some_o sin_n that_o daily_o they_o find_v within_o they_o and_o yet_o after_o many_o year_n they_o can_v be_v deliver_v from_o it_o
against_o it_o because_o it_o find_v it_o offensive_a unto_o god_n and_o thus_o now_o you_o may_v see_v the_o difference_n of_o these_o two_o motion_n in_o these_o several_a estate_n of_o man_n though_o oftentimes_o i_o know_v that_o the_o hypocrite_n do_v flatter_v himself_o in_o the_o sight_n hereof_o as_o though_o he_o have_v find_v some_o goodly_a and_o precious_a jewel_n in_o the_o dunghill_n of_o his_o corrupt_a nature_n when_o as_o in_o very_a deed_n it_o be_v nothing_o so_o chap._n xiiii_o how_o the_o man_n disquiet_v in_o conscience_n shall_v in_o the_o same_o behane_n himself_o now_o as_o these_o thing_n hitherto_o have_v be_v utter_v for_o direction_n so_o some_o thing_n also_o be_v to_o be_v annex_v partly_o out_o of_o that_o which_o go_v before_o and_o partly_o over_o and_o beside_o the_o same_o to_o instruct_v and_o teach_v the_o man_n in_o conscience_n trouble_v and_o disquiet_v with_o the_o weakness_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o manifold_a imperfection_n which_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o how_o he_o may_v use_v and_o demean_v himself_o in_o view_n and_o meditation_n of_o they_o and_o that_o he_o may_v do_v it_o with_o great_a comfort_n &_o less_o distrust_n first_o therefore_o i_o will_v wish_v and_o advise_v such_o a_o man_n not_o to_o pass_v over_o every_o thing_n light_o in_o a_o slight_a manner_n trial_n not_o rest_n in_o fear_n without_o due_a trial_n without_o a_o due_a and_o deliberate_a consideration_n as_o be_v the_o common_a use_n of_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n but_o rather_o to_o grow_v to_o a_o thorough_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o himself_o for_o oftentimes_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o for_o want_v hereof_o there_o arise_v many_o great_a discomfort_n unto_o man_n when_o man_n either_o utter_o refuse_v or_o else_o by_o reason_n of_o some_o light_a cause_n defer_v the_o matter_n do_v not_o search_v so_o deep_o into_o themselves_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o so_o through_o this_o default_n they_o do_v bereave_v themselves_o of_o the_o sight_n and_o knowledge_n of_o those_o good_a motion_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o comfort_n thereof_o come_v which_o other_o man_n do_v enjoy_v and_o in_o this_o point_n it_o fall_v out_o with_o man_n refuse_v or_o delay_v to_o make_v this_o trial_n as_o it_o do_v with_o a_o man_n disease_v with_o a_o sore_n and_o grievous_a imposthume_n who_o if_o he_o do_v look_v only_o upon_o the_o outward_a appearance_n find_v nothing_o but_o such_o matter_n as_o still_o threaten_v grief_n and_o anguish_n but_o if_o he_o pierce_v into_o it_o and_o lance_n it_o feel_v present_a ease_n so_o while_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n look_v only_o upon_o the_o outward_a appearance_n of_o his_o imperfection_n he_o shall_v find_v nothing_o but_o matter_n to_o move_v and_o lead_v corrupt_a and_o unjust_a judge_n upon_o himself_o ready_a rash_o to_o pronounce_v and_o give_v the_o sentence_n before_o the_o cause_n be_v well_o and_o thorough_o know_v for_o this_o be_v a_o usual_a fault_n and_o too_o too_o common_a among_o man_n and_o have_v be_v the_o cause_n of_o many_o great_a inconvenience_n that_o we_o may_v therefore_o be_v find_v herein_o the_o more_o careful_a to_o trial_n of_o sin_n whereunto_o be_v to_o be_v plead_v either_o guilty_a or_o not_o guilty_a the_o circumstance_n be_v the_o person_n agent_n which_o be_v the_o soul_n accuse_v satan_n and_o sin_n the_o accuser_n and_o in_o this_o the_o conscience_n be_v as_o a_o judge_n the_o silly_a soul_n now_o as_o a_o offender_n in_o woeful_a case_n stand_v at_o the_o bar_n hold_v up_o the_o hand_n to_o be_v try_v and_o find_v either_o guilty_a or_o not_o guilty_a this_o as_o i_o have_v say_v the_o silly_a soul_n be_v no_o doubt_n the_o principal_a part_n of_o man_n and_o most_o to_o be_v account_v of_o as_o a_o most_o precious_a jewel_n for_o although_o a_o man_n have_v never_o so_o great_a abundance_n of_o earthly_a treasure_n yet_o be_v it_o nothing_o in_o comparison_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o to_o gain_v and_o get_v the_o whole_a world_n it_o profit_v not_o at_o all_o to_o a_o man_n 9.25_o luk._n 9.25_o if_o he_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n and_o therefore_o though_o our_o post_a and_o be_v look_v for_o that_o they_o will_v spew_v out_o their_o poison_n against_o the_o true_a servant_n of_o the_o lord_n so_o far_o as_o they_o can_v to_o the_o utter_a destruction_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n against_o these_o so_o malicious_a and_o envious_a accuser_n advocate_n i'faith_o his_o advocate_n still_o urge_v the_o heinousness_n of_o thy_o iniquity_n faith_n as_o a_o wise_a and_o prudent_a advocate_n stand_v to_o plead_v the_o cause_n who_o although_o she_o always_o tell_v the_o truth_n and_o speak_v with_o great_a comfort_n yet_o be_v she_o oftentimes_o so_o shoulder_v out_o &_o suppress_v with_o the_o clamorous_a out_o cry_v of_o these_o malicious_a accusant_n that_o she_o can_v hardly_o be_v suffer_v to_o speak_v in_o such_o free_a manner_n as_o she_o will_v and_o if_o what_o grievous_a torment_v the_o child_n of_o god_n have_v suffer_v for_o it_o will_v not_o satisfy_v nor_o suffice_v thy_o turn_n for_o if_o thou_o have_v be_v one_o of_o god_n elect_v and_o choose_a child_n he_o will_v sure_o have_v hear_v thou_o long_a yer_z this_o he_o will_v not_o have_v stop_v his_o ear_n at_o so_o many_o cry_n nor_o pass_v over_o so_o many_o plaint_n without_o compassion_n show_v in_o this_o new_a and_o fresh_a assault_n of_o satan_n make_v upon_o the_o weak_a conscience_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v how_o that_o to_o make_v his_o reason_n to_o carry_v the_o great_a show_n of_o probability_n he_o do_v make_v a_o double_a amplification_n thereof_o partly_o by_o the_o enumeration_n of_o some_o example_n of_o such_o person_n as_o have_v be_v afflict_v but_o yet_o for_o a_o short_a time_n who_o cry_n the_o lord_n have_v quick_o hear_v and_o grant_v their_o request_n say_v lo_o and_o see_v such_o and_o such_o a_o one_o the_o saint_n &_o servant_n of_o god_n indeed_o that_o have_v suffer_v great_a and_o grievous_a torment_n but_o behold_v and_o see_v again_o how_o soon_o and_o quick_o they_o be_v deliver_v and_o partly_o by_o the_o recital_n of_o god_n exceed_a mercy_n and_o compassion_n unto_o his_o servant_n allege_v that_o his_o eye_n be_v always_o fix_v on_o they_o his_o ear_n be_v ever_o open_a to_o their_o cry_n that_o he_o be_v tender_a and_o careful_a over_o they_o as_o the_o hen_n over_o her_o chicken_n or_o the_o mother_n over_o her_o young_a and_o tender_a babe_n and_o as_o mindful_a of_o they_o as_o the_o bride_n be_v of_o her_o ornament_n in_o the_o day_n of_o marriage_n and_o hereupon_o labour_v to_o infer_v this_o conclusion_n against_o the_o afflict_a soul_n to_o drive_v he_o into_o despair_n that_o it_o can_v be_v possible_a that_o god_n be_v so_o pitiful_a so_o love_v and_o so_o compassionate_a shall_v so_o long_o and_o in_o such_o sort_n defer_v and_o put_v off_o his_o help_a hand_n from_o he_o if_o he_o be_v repute_v in_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_n and_o choose_a this_o reason_n of_o satan_n thus_o amplify_v the_o more_o subtle_o that_o it_o be_v by_o he_o couch_v the_o more_o forcible_o it_o prcuail_v with_o the_o weak_a and_o distress_a soul_n to_o the_o dangerous_a overthrow_n thereof_o for_o whereas_o it_o have_v be_v before_o show_v that_o both_o the_o elect_a and_o reprobate_n be_v in_o deed_n partaker_n of_o affliction_n satan_n by_o this_o his_o reason_n will_v persuade_v that_o the_o continuance_n of_o affliction_n in_o respect_n of_o time_n and_o the_o delay_n use_v of_o god_n in_o show_v forth_o his_o help_n be_v undoubted_a difference_n and_o plain_a mark_n whereby_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o may_v very_o easy_o be_v discern_v &_o know_v and_o to_o further_a he_o in_o this_o his_o purpose_n he_o take_v no_o small_a advantage_n of_o the_o imbecility_n and_o weakness_n which_o be_v find_v in_o man_n who_o so_o long_o as_o his_o wound_n be_v but_o fresh_a and_o green_a can_v the_o better_o tolerate_v and_o abide_v the_o bear_n of_o they_o because_o he_o conceive_v some_o hope_n of_o some_o quick_a and_o speedy_a deliverance_n but_o when_o after_o long_a expectation_n he_o perceive_v his_o hope_n to_o be_v frustrate_v and_o after_o long_a trial_n see_v he_o can_v find_v no_o ease_n although_o he_o have_v use_v all_o possible_a mean_n for_o the_o same_o than_o he_o begin_v to_o despair_v of_o himself_o and_o to_o make_v a_o question_n and_o doubt_n of_o his_o estate_n wherein_o he_o be_v find_v to_o be_v like_a unto_o a_o sick_a man_n which_o have_v try_v all_o the_o help_n of_o physic_n and_o yet_o find_v no_o help_n for_o the_o cure_n of_o his_o disease_n begin_v then_o to_o distrust_v of_o life_n whereas_o before_o such_o trial_n make_v he_o suspect_v little_a danger_n of_o death_n in_o himself_o to_o prevent_v satan_n of_o his_o purpose_n and_o for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o weak_a christian_a it_o shall_v not_o be_v amiss_o nay_o i_o think_v it_o necessary_a as_o before_o of_o the_o other_o reason_n of_o the_o adversary_n so_o of_o this_o likewise_o to_o show_v the_o weakness_n and_o insufficiency_n that_o it_o be_v know_v we_o may_v see_v and_o perceive_v the_o better_a how_o little_a faith_n be_v to_o be_v give_v to_o his_o persuasion_n in_o which_o do_v as_o a_o counter-blast_n against_o this_o temptation_n of_o satan_n i_o think_v it_o good_a here_o
our_o frail_a and_o weak_a flesh_n that_o so_o he_o may_v deliver_v we_o from_o hell_n and_o crown_v we_o with_o a_o unspeakable_a weight_n of_o glory_n and_o what_o though_o we_o call_v and_o cry_v yea_o and_o that_o often_o and_o very_o earnest_o and_o yet_o as_o we_o suppose_v god_n do_v not_o regard_v it_o for_o the_o time_n be_v we_o therefore_o thus_o to_o judge_v or_o think_v either_o of_o god_n or_o of_o ourselves_o as_o satan_n will_v have_v we_o if_o he_o may_v prevail_v god_n forbid_v it_o be_v our_o part_n rather_o to_o rest_v ourselves_o satisfy_v and_o content_v with_o this_o that_o the_o lord_n as_o i_o have_v say_v both_o know_v what_o be_v most_o convement_n and_o behooveful_a for_o we_o his_o child_n and_o that_o he_o be_v both_o able_a and_o also_o ready_a and_o willing_a in_o his_o appoint_a time_n full_o to_o accomplish_v and_o perform_v the_o same_o let_v not_o this_o seem_v any_o strange_a thing_n unto_o thou_o for_o god_n herein_o show_v himself_o not_o otherwise_o affect_v towards_o we_o than_o even_o thou_o thyself_o be_v affect_v towards_o thy_o own_o child_n who_o thou_o most_o tender_o love_v and_o in_o who_o thou_o take_v some_o great_a pleasure_n if_o this_o thy_o child_n have_v some_o grievous_a sore_n or_o wound_v inflict_v upon_o he_o which_o by_o none_o other_o cunning_a of_o physic_n can_v be_v cure_v but_o by_o the_o daily_o apply_v of_o some_o sharp_a and_o bite_a medicine_n thereunto_o if_o the_o child_n torment_v with_o this_o physic_n shall_v cry_v unto_o thou_o make_v pitiful_a moan_n and_o plaint_n and_o that_o with_o abundance_n of_o tear_n trickle_v down_o his_o tender_a cheek_n crave_v instant_o that_o thou_o will_v cease_v and_o give_v over_o in_o this_o manner_n to_o vex_v he_o by_o apply_v unto_o his_o sore_n such_o a_o bite_a corrosive_n will_v thou_o therefore_o cease_v &_o give_v over_o thy_o course_n or_o will_v thou_o not_o rather_o all_o the_o cry_n and_o tear_n of_o thy_o child_n notwithstanding_o continue_v still_o in_o the_o same_o because_o thou_o see_v and_o know_v it_o to_o be_v the_o hest_n and_o safe_a way_n to_o work_v recovery_n yea_o and_o yet_o withal_o also_o think_v that_o therein_o thou_o show_v a_o undoubted_a argument_n and_o token_n of_o thy_o great_a and_o fatherly_a love_n towards_o he_o if_o it_o may_v be_v thus_o betwixt_o thou_o and_o thy_o child_n what_o reason_n be_v it_o that_o god_n shall_v be_v abridge_v of_o his_o prerogative_n that_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v in_o such_o manner_n betwixt_o god_n and_o his_o child_n why_o may_v not_o god_n continue_v his_o correction_n upon_o his_o servant_n and_o therein_o as_o well_o as_o thou_o declare_v his_o love_n and_o hold_v on_o still_o to_o apply_v unto_o the_o sore_n of_o sin_n these_o bite_a medicine_n of_o affliction_n notwithstanding_o that_o thou_o continual_o call_v and_o cry_v to_o have_v he_o cease_v and_o yet_o not_o withal_o as_o thou_o unto_o thy_o child_n show_v forth_o his_o mercy_n and_o compassion_n towards_o thou_o let_v this_o therefore_o be_v hold_v as_o a_o certain_a and_o undoubted_a truth_n according_a to_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o this_o my_o four_o position_n that_o no_o misery_n and_o affliction_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o greatness_n and_o continuance_n can_v be_v any_o sufficient_a cause_n or_o reason_n to_o make_v a_o difference_n in_o this_o life_n betwixt_o the_o choose_a of_o the_o lord_n and_o castawaye_n the_o elect_a and_o reprobate_n because_o god_n pour_v down_o his_o correction_n oftentimes_o upon_o the_o one_o in_o as_o great_a a_o measure_n both_o in_o quantity_n and_o continuance_n as_o he_o do_v his_o judgement_n upon_o the_o other_o and_o though_o some_o difference_n be_v indeed_o betwixt_o they_o as_o have_v be_v before_o declare_v yet_o they_o be_v such_o and_o so_o hard_a for_o man_n to_o sound_v into_o that_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o dare_v not_o say_v no_o not_o of_o those_o that_o have_v spend_v their_o life_n very_o dissolute_o and_o die_v to_o the_o outward_a appearance_n very_o miserable_o that_o therefore_o these_o be_v judgement_n proceed_v of_o god_n hatred_n and_o token_n of_o his_o eternal_a resection_n of_o they_o we_o may_v read_v of_o many_o both_o in_o the_o old_a &_o late_a time_n in_o foreign_a and_o also_o in_o our_o own_o country_n which_o have_v tyrannous_o oppress_v and_o cruel_o persecute_v the_o poor_a member_n and_o faithful_a servant_n of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n which_o die_v strange_a and_o unwonted_a death_n and_o suffer_v in_o their_o end_n most_o terrible_a and_o unspeakle_n torment_v yet_o since_o the_o time_n and_o manner_n of_o god_n call_v be_v so_o secret_a and_o unknown_a unto_o we_o shall_v i_o say_v that_o therefore_o they_o be_v condemn_v let_v other_o use_v their_o judgement_n i_o dare_v not_o do_v it_o for_o my_o opinion_n be_v that_o extremity_n be_v no_o reason_n and_o strange_a torment_n be_v no_o argument_n to_o convince_v so_o great_a a_o matter_n they_o rest_v unto_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o who_o they_o either_o stand_v or_o fall_v and_o yet_o for_o the_o comfort_n of_o all_o god_n child_n be_v it_o also_o add_v that_o oftentimes_o in_o these_o extremity_n and_o agony_n even_o in_o the_o very_a suffering_n and_o endure_v of_o they_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n shall_v find_v many_o undoubted_a reasous_n whereupon_o they_o may_v certain_o and_o without_o all_o doubt_n conclude_v their_o salvation_n and_o that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_n and_o choose_a and_o this_o be_v by_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n work_v and_o move_v in_o they_o which_o effect_n sometime_o again_o be_v so_o suppress_v and_o sinother_v under_o the_o violence_n of_o their_o pain_n and_o misery_n that_o they_o seem_v oftentimes_o yea_o and_o many_o of_o they_o also_o even_o in_o the_o very_a point_n of_o death_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o yield_v up_o the_o ghost_n unto_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n to_o have_v no_o feel_n of_o comfort_n in_o christ_n and_o to_o savour_n only_o of_o despair_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o depart_v hence_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o number_n of_o his_o faithful_a servant_n chap._n xxiii_o of_o the_o five_o position_n these_o thing_n be_v thus_o conclude_v as_o we_o have_v answer_v satan_n objection_n and_o in_o answer_v remove_v his_o discomfort_n whereinto_o he_o seek_v to_o cast_v the_o child_n of_o god_n so_o now_o let_v we_o gather_v as_o it_o be_v into_o a_o brief_a sum_n the_o comfort_n before_o entreat_v of_o and_o also_o further_o see_v what_o comfort_v more_o we_o can_v make_v against_o this_o temptation_n and_o what_o spiritual_a diet_n be_v herein_o fit_a and_o most_o convevient_a for_o the_o afflict_a &_o distress_a soul_n to_o use_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o his_o soul_n health_n the_o first_o comfort_n comfort_n 1._o comfort_n be_v the_o consideration_n of_o the_o motive_n cause_n in_o god_n of_o these_o affliction_n and_o that_o be_v love_n and_o mercy_n which_o he_o bear_v unto_o these_o his_o servant_n who_o he_o do_v vouchsafe_v thus_o to_o afflict_v and_o chasten_v for_o this_o serve_v if_o it_o be_v well_o consider_v as_o a_o rein_n to_o hold_v back_o and_o restrain_v the_o violence_n of_o despair_a thought_n when_o as_o we_o call_v to_o mind_n and_o remember_v that_o he_o that_o lay_v and_o inflict_v these_o thing_n upon_o we_o be_v love_o affect_v and_o dispose_v towards_o we_o and_o therefore_o will_v sure_o herein_o proceed_v no_o further_o then_o shall_v be_v for_o our_o good_a and_o benefit_n comfort_n 2._o comfort_n unto_o this_o let_v we_o add_v for_o the_o second_o comfort_n the_o consideration_n of_o the_o sinall_z cause_n or_o end_v wherefore_o god_n do_v thus_o correct_v and_o chasten_v his_o child_n and_o that_o be_v to_o work_v in_o they_o amendment_n to_o quicken_v stir_v up_o increase_v his_o grace_n in_o they_o that_o they_o may_v shine_v &_o appear_v more_o bright_a and_o clear_a and_o to_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o danger_n of_o those_o thing_n as_o sin_n and_o death_n whereinto_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o weakness_n and_o exceed_a frailty_n of_o our_o nature_n we_o be_v ready_a every_o day_n to_o slip_v and_o fall_v if_o by_o these_o his_o fatherly_a and_o gentle_a correction_n we_o be_v not_o restrain_v oftentimes_o also_o comfort_n 3._o comfort_n we_o must_v herein_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o great_a care_n of_o god_n which_o he_o have_v for_o his_o servant_n in_o inflict_v &_o lay_v these_o correction_n upon_o they_o in_o that_o at_o all_o time_n and_o in_o every_o several_a person_n he_o have_v a_o special_a respect_n and_o regard_n that_o they_o exceed_v not_o measure_n but_o still_o do_v limit_n and_o order_v they_o according_a to_o our_o ability_n in_o tolerate_v the_o
as_o belong_v and_o appertain_v to_o themselves_o true_a faith_n therefore_o have_v always_o though_o not_o ever_o in_o the_o high_a measure_n this_o apply_v virtue_n annex_v with_o it_o as_o a_o essential_a property_n so_o that_o as_o in_o two_o member_n the_o one_o be_v dead_a the_o other_o quick_a and_o lively_a thou_o may_v easy_o discern_v which_o be_v lively_a by_o the_o live_n and_o vital_a motion_n in_o minister_a and_o serve_v unto_o the_o necessary_a use_n of_o the_o body_n so_o by_o this_o lively_a motion_n wherein_o the_o life_n of_o faith_n in_o part_n appear_v thou_o may_v discern_v &_o know_v thy_o faith_n to_o be_v quick_a and_o live_a in_o that_o it_o do_v thus_o minister_v unto_o thy_o soul_n by_o apply_v the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o the_o consolation_n and_o comfort_n thereof_o for_o which_o cause_n also_o this_o motion_n of_o faith_n be_v call_v sometime_o phronesis_n prudence_n or_o understanding_n because_o herein_o our_o faith_n do_v show_v forth_o and_o manifest_v a_o skill_n and_o discretion_n in_o make_v the_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o knowledge_n we_o have_v attain_v as_o for_o that_o other_o faith_n of_o hypocrite_n hypecrite_n the_o faith_n of_o hypecrite_n that_o be_v inst_o compare_v to_o the_o dead_a member_n for_o that_o it_o want_v this_o motion_n of_o life_n it_o have_v not_o this_o strength_n to_o apprehend_v nor_o force_n and_o power_n to_o apply_v though_o otherwise_o he_o that_o have_v it_o seem_v to_o be_v sufficient_o instruct_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n for_o this_o faith_n indeed_o consist_v only_o in_o a_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n without_o any_o further_a use_n and_o therefore_o christ_n our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o this_o faith_n say_v indeed_o it_o receive_v the_o seed_n and_o the_o seed_n sprout_v and_o spring_v out_o again_o but_o yet_o it_o never_o bear_v fruit_n for_o these_o kind_n of_o man_n be_v know_v to_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n and_o seem_v to_o have_v profit_v and_o proceed_v therein_o that_o they_o can_v discourse_v and_o reason_n of_o the_o same_o and_o that_o oftentimes_o very_o profound_o and_o learned_o but_o yet_o all_o this_o be_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o the_o purpose_n for_o all_o this_o while_n they_o want_v the_o principal_a which_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o use_v of_o these_o thing_n in_o particular_a application_n thereof_o unto_o their_o soul_n and_o if_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o that_o they_o find_v any_o joy_n within_o themselves_o in_o regard_n hereof_o as_o oftentimes_o they_o do_v right_n the_o joy_n of_o hypocrite_n compare_v to_o the_o joy_n of_o one_o that_o have_v find_v some_o treasure_n to_o which_o he_o have_v no_o good_a right_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o like_o the_o joy_n of_o one_o that_o walk_v forth_o have_v find_v a_o treasure_n or_o precious_a jewel_n that_o be_v lose_v he_o be_v glad_a and_o rejoice_v in_o himself_o at_o such_o a_o precious_a accident_n as_o though_o it_o be_v his_o own_o and_o that_o he_o have_v a_o good_a interest_n unto_o the_o same_o and_o yet_o he_o can_v in_o no_o wise_n assure_v himself_o that_o it_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v his_o good_n because_o be_v a_o thing_n lose_v it_o be_v likely_a the_o owner_n will_v make_v inquisition_n after_o it_o and_o then_o his_o conscience_n as_o good_a as_o a_o thousand_o witness_n in_o this_o case_n tell_v he_o that_o if_o the_o matter_n be_v well_o consider_v of_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n or_o cause_n of_o joy_n at_o all_o howsoever_o thus_o foolish_o and_o rash_o he_o conceive_v of_o it_o before_o so_o likewise_o the_o hypocrite_n have_v attain_v unto_o this_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o life_n and_o thus_o light_v upon_o this_o most_o precious_a and_o most_o costly_a jewel_n of_o man_n redemption_n by_o and_o through_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n seem_v therein_o to_o joy_n and_o delight_v himself_o and_o yet_o when_o he_o have_v thorough_o try_v and_o examine_v himself_o he_o find_v that_o in_o very_a deed_n this_o jewel_n do_v not_o of_o right_a appertain_v unto_o he_o but_o to_o other_o and_o that_o not_o he_o but_o other_o may_v claim_v a_o right_n and_o interest_n unto_o the_o same_o chap._n xxxii_o of_o the_o effect_n whereby_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n may_v be_v know_v as_o by_o the_o nature_n effect_n 2._o true_a faith_n know_v by_o the_o effect_n so_o by_o the_o effect_n also_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n may_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v in_o treat_v whereof_o my_o purpose_n be_v to_o fetch_v the_o ground_n of_o my_o discourse_n from_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n write_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o sift_n chapter_n of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n 5._o rom._n 5.1_o 2_o 3_o 4_o 5._o where_o we_o read_v in_o this_o manner_n then_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n towards_o god_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n by_o who_o also_o we_o have_v access_n through_o faith_n unto_o his_o grace_n wherein_o we_o stand_v and_o rejoice_v under_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n neither_o do_v we_o so_o only_o but_o we_o rejoice_v in_o tribulation_n know_v that_o tribulation_n bring_v forth_o patience_n etc._n etc._n unto_o the_o sixth_o verse_n of_o the_o same_o chapter_n in_o which_o word_n the_o apostle_n paul_n as_o we_o may_v plain_o see_v set_v down_o six_o notable_a fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o a_o true_a and_o justify_v faith_n for_o of_o such_o a_o faith_n only_o do_v the_o apostle_n there_o speak_v and_o this_o also_o may_v very_o well_o be_v prove_v and_o confirm_v by_o this_o namely_o that_o these_o fruit_n be_v such_o as_o do_v follow_v those_o that_o be_v justify_v and_o at_o that_o time_n only_o when_o as_o they_o be_v now_o already_o justify_v for_o so_o do_v the_o apostle_n word_n import_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n than_o we_o have_v peace_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o these_o fruit_n and_o effect_n can_v never_o befall_v unto_o a_o counterfeit_n and_o false_a faith_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n and_o therefore_o be_v good_a and_o undoubted_a mark_n and_o token_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v that_o faith_n to_o be_v a_o true_a faith_n and_o those_o to_o have_v a_o lively_a and_o a_o justify_n faith_n in_o who_o they_o do_v appear_v the_o first_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o this_o true_a and_o justify_v faith_n faith_n 1._o fruit_n of_o true_a faith_n be_v peace_n with_o god_n for_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n say_v the_o apostle_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n whereby_o be_v mean_v not_o only_o a_o reconcilement_n make_v in_o that_o god_n have_v remit_v and_o forgive_v our_o sin_n but_o also_o a_o inward_a and_o joyful_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o same_o in_o our_o heart_n and_o soul_n 1._o a_o twofold_a peace_n 1._o there_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n a_o
