be_v not_o so_o great_a a_o rich_a man_n as_o the_o rich_a in_o the_o town_n yet_o thou_o may_v be_v rich_a in_o thy_o kind_n again_o when_o conscience_n look_v to_o the_o humour_n you_o be_v to_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o the_o humour_n of_o melancholy_a when_o the_o instrument_n of_o reason_n that_o shall_v judge_v be_v distemper_v by_o melancholy_n it_o reason_n from_o thence_o false_o because_o melancholy_a persuade_v i_o that_o i_o be_o so_o therefore_o conscience_n be_v lead_v by_o the_o humour_n of_o the_o body_n say_v i_o be_o so_o who_o bid_v thou_o live_v by_o humour_n thou_o must_v live_v by_o rule_n melancholy_n may_v tell_v thou_o sometime_o when_o it_o be_v in_o strength_n that_o thou_o be_v make_v of_o glass_n as_o it_o have_v do_v some_o it_o will_v that_o we_o be_v not_o the_o child_n of_o god_n that_o we_o have_v not_o grace_n and_o goodness_n when_o we_o have_v again_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o conscience_n do_v not_o conclude_v comfort_n in_o god_n child_n because_o it_o look_v to_o the_o ill_a and_o not_o to_o the_o good_a that_o be_v in_o they_o for_o there_o be_v those_o two_o thing_n in_o god_n child_n there_o be_v good_a and_o ill_a now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n they_o look_v to_o the_o ill_a and_o think_v they_o have_v no_o good_a because_o they_o will_v not_o see_v any_o thing_n but_o ill_n they_o fix_v their_o eye_n on_o the_o remainder_n of_o their_o rebellious_a lust_n which_o be_v not_o full_o subdue_v in_o they_o and_o they_o look_v whole_o on_o they_o whereas_o they_o shall_v have_v two_o eye_n one_o to_o look_v on_o that_o which_o be_v good_a that_o god_n may_v have_v glory_n and_o they_o comfort_n now_o they_o fix_v their_o eye_n altogether_o on_o that_o which_o be_v naught_o and_o because_o they_o do_v not_o or_o will_v not_o see_v that_o which_o be_v good_a therefore_o they_o have_v no_o comfort_n because_o they_o suffer_v conscience_n to_o be_v ill_o lead_v that_o it_o do_v not_o its_o that_o have_v a_o strong_a faith_n or_o he_o that_o have_v perfect_a repentance_n so_o saint_n paul_n say_v as_o we_o shall_v see_v after_o this_o be_v our_o rejoice_v that_o in_o simplicity_n and_o sincerity_n we_o have_v have_v our_o conversation_n among_o you_o he_o do_v not_o say_v that_o our_o conversation_n have_v be_v perfect_a so_o if_o we_o will_v have_v joy_n in_o the_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n we_o must_v not_o abridge_v ourselves_o of_o joy_n because_o we_o have_v not_o a_o perfect_a measure_n of_o grace_n but_o rejoice_v that_o god_n have_v wrought_v any_o measure_n of_o the_o place_n thus_o our_o rejoice_v be_v this_o the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n that_o in_o simplicity_n etc._n etc._n where_o there_o be_v joy_n and_o the_o ground_n of_o joy_n there_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o the_o estate_n but_o a_o christian_a have_v glory_v and_o a_o ground_n of_o glory_v in_o himself_o and_o he_o know_v it_o he_o have_v that_o in_o he_o that_o witness_v that_o estate_n he_o have_v the_o witness_n of_o conscience_n therefore_o he_o may_v know_v and_o be_v assure_v of_o it_o if_o this_o testimony_n be_v not_o a_o true_a testimony_n it_o be_v something_o but_o god_n providence_n in_o the_o use_n of_o good_a mean_n a_o man_n may_v know_v by_o god_n afflict_v of_o his_o child_n that_o they_o deal_v too_o much_o in_o carnal_a wisdom_n for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o for_o carnal_a wisdom_n if_o we_o will_v submit_v ourselves_o to_o his_o sweet_a and_o easy_a guidance_n and_o use_v the_o lawful_a mean_n that_o he_o have_v discover_v in_o a_o lawful_a call_n if_o we_o will_v observe_v lawful_a course_n alas_o we_o shall_v see_v a_o clear_a light_n and_o a_o easy_a passage_n we_o need_v not_o to_o use_v these_o shift_n but_o because_o we_o can_v do_v so_o christian_a prudence_n to_o his_o apology_n to_o wipe_v away_o the_o imputation_n when_o i_o be_v thus_o mind_v do_v i_o use_v lightness_n say_v he_o this_o i_o observe_v in_o general_n now_o yet_o in_o the_o awe_n of_o god_n they_o do_v not_o go_v that_o way_n that_o politic_a respect_n will_v carry_v they_o they_o can_v be_v as_o errant_a politician_n as_o the_o best_a but_o they_o he_o will_v not_o if_o a_o man_n have_v power_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o opportunity_n revenge_v himself_o he_o consult_v not_o with_o flesh_n and_o blood_n for_o he_o may_v be_v revenge_v if_o he_o will_v so_o i_o say_v when_o there_o be_v something_o that_o may_v sway_v we_o another_o way_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o out_o of_o mere_a conscience_n and_o better_a rule_n we_o will_v not_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n we_o purpose_v not_o we_o advise_v not_o thing_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n but_o according_a to_o the_o spirit_n we_o be_v lead_v with_o better_a rule_n then_o the_o world_n be_v in_o strong_a suggestion_n a_o joseph_n can_v say_v how_o shall_v i_o do_v this_o and_o offend_v against_o god_n do_v not_o god_n see_v it_o say_v job_n so_o a_o christian_a in_o the_o strength_n of_o temptation_n and_o solicitation_n and_o opportunity_n to_o do_v ill_a he_o consider_v do_v not_o god_n see_v how_o shall_v i_o do_v this_o and_o offend_v against_o god_n shall_v i_o break_v the_o peace_n of_o my_o conscience_n for_o the_o gain_n of_o this_o and_o this_o why_o no_o then_o a_o man_n be_v not_o lead_v with_o carnal_a wisdom_n again_o we_o may_v know_v this_o that_o we_o be_v it_o be_v present_a at_o our_o elbow_n nay_o it_o be_v near_o the_o flesh_n be_v mingle_v in_o all_o the_o power_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o with_o heavenly_a wisdom_n there_o be_v a_o mixture_n of_o carnal_a wisdom_n how_o shall_v we_o do_v that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v taint_v with_o it_o i_o will_v give_v a_o direction_n or_o two_o first_o of_o all_o have_v a_o prejudice_n of_o it_o cave_n time_n etc._n etc._n say_v the_o holy_a man_n s._n austin_n take_v heed_n of_o the_o evil_a man_n thyself_o take_v heed_n of_o carnal_a reason_n wisdom_n be_v jealous_a of_o it_o it_o be_v a_o enemy_n and_o the_o issue_n of_o the_o way_n it_o advise_v to_o be_v death_n there_o be_v a_o way_n that_o seem_v good_a to_o a_o man_n in_o his_o own_o eye_n the_o issue_n whereof_o be_v death_n not_o temporal_a only_o but_o eternal_a death_n it_o be_v a_o deadly_a enemy_n have_v a_o prejudice_n of_o it_o and_o conceit_n of_o it_o to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v have_v a_o jealousy_n of_o it_o and_o of_o our_o own_o self_n especial_o in_o thing_n that_o concern_v ourselves_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o a_o man_n be_v a_o incompetent_a judge_n in_o his_o own_o cause_n this_o because_o there_o be_v natural_a self-love_n and_o flesh_n that_o draw_v all_o to_o itself_o consult_v not_o with_o it_o therefore_o consult_v with_o high_a rule_n and_o principle_n what_o may_v make_v most_o for_o the_o chief_a end_n for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n for_o the_o assurance_n of_o our_o comfort_n while_o we_o live_v here_o and_o a_o better_a estate_n hereafter_o that_o which_o may_v make_v most_o for_o the_o common_a good_a let_v we_o labour_n to_o live_v by_o right_a rule_n and_o principle_n god_n will_v value_v we_o by_o that_o put_v the_o case_n a_o man_n by_o passion_n be_v lead_v another_o way_n what_o be_v his_o rule_n what_o life_n be_v his_o aim_n his_o aim_n be_v not_o carnal_a he_o may_v fall_v by_o passion_n etc._n etc._n god_n judge_v not_o by_o passion_n but_o by_o grace_n and_o peace_n and_o joy_n nay_o the_o very_a earnest_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v better_a than_o all_o earthly_a thing_n for_o the_o earnest_a of_o it_o be_v joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a and_o peace_n that_o pass_v all_o understanding_n if_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o earnest_a here_o be_v so_o i_o beseech_v you_o what_o shall_v the_o accomplishment_n of_o the_o promise_n purgation_n here_o by_o a_o oath_n these_o three_o thing_n i_o will_v brief_o touch_v first_o of_o all_o you_o see_v here_o he_o avoid_v suspicion_n of_o lightness_n which_o the_o corinthian_n have_v of_o he_o partly_o by_o the_o false_a suggestion_n of_o proud_a teacher_n among_o they_o who_o foment_v their_o suspicious_a disposition_n because_o they_o will_v weaken_v s._n paul_n esteem_n among_o the_o corinthian_n they_o have_v a_o conceit_n he_o be_v a_o uncertain_a man_n he_o promise_v to_o come_v and_o do_v not_o now_o here_o he_o decline_v that_o suspicion_n where_o first_o observe_v these_o two_o thing_n brief_o first_o that_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n be_v incline_v to_o suspicion_n and_o second_o that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o man_n to_o avoid_v it_o as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v and_o to_o wipe_v it_o away_o if_o it_o can_v be_v avoid_v man_n nature_n be_v prone_a to_o suspicion_n man_n nature_n be_v prone_a to_o suspect_v ill_o of_o another_o though_o never_o so_o good_a suspicion_n christ_n can_v not_o avoid_v it_o because_o he_o converse_v sociable_o with_o other_o man_n he_o be_v think_v to_o be_v a_o wine-bibber_n a_o companion_n of_o sinner_n and_o god_n shall_v be_v open_a and_o you_o shall_v be_v as_o god_n know_v good_a and_o evil_n do_v you_o think_v that_o he_o intend_v you_o any_o good_a in_o forbid_v you_o to_o eat_v &_o c_o he_o do_v not_o spare_v christ_n innocency_n itself_o clothe_v with_o man_n flesh_n and_o will_v he_o spare_v to_o bring_v uncharitable_a suspicion_n upon_o other_o sure_o he_o will_v not_o and_o then_o man_n nature_n of_o itself_o be_v prone_a to_o suspect_v and_o think_v ill_a of_o another_o from_o many_o ground_n sometime_o out_o of_o experience_n of_o the_o common_a infirmity_n thnt_v man_n meet_v suspicion_n with_o in_o the_o world_n out_o of_o the_o experience_n of_o the_o falsehood_n of_o man_n they_o be_v many_o time_n prone_a to_o suspicion_n man_n but_o most_o common_o it_o be_v out_o of_o guiltiness_n that_o man_n think_v ill_a of_o other_o because_o other_o have_v cause_n to_o think_v ill_o of_o they_o none_o be_v so_o prone_a to_o suspicion_n guiltiness_n as_o those_o that_o be_v worst_a themselves_o because_o they_o judge_v other_o by_o their_o own_o heart_n the_o better_a sort_n of_o people_n think_v of_o other_o as_o they_o be_v and_o as_o they_o deserve_v themselves_o but_o other_o because_o they_o be_v naught_o they_o think_v other_o be_v so_o because_o they_o deserve_v ill_a they_o think_v other_o have_v deserve_v a_o ill_a opinion_n of_o they_o so_o many_o time_n it_o come_v of_o guilt_n because_o we_o be_v not_o as_o we_o shall_v be_v then_o again_o it_o arise_v from_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n in_o another_o respect_n we_o think_v because_o man_n have_v cause_n though_o they_o have_v no_o wrong_n to_o themselves_o yet_o because_o our_o own_o heart_n tell_v we_o we_o be_v ill_a we_o suspect_v they_o so_o from_o a_o uncharitable_a disposition_n and_o guiltiness_n of_o conscience_n it_o ofttimes_o come_v then_o again_o sometime_o from_o the_o concurrence_n of_o probability_n the_o suit_v probability_n of_o circumstance_n that_o make_v thing_n somewhat_o probable_a whereupon_o suspicion_n may_v be_v fasten_v sometime_o when_o there_o be_v a_o concurrence_n of_o probability_n of_o the_o likelihood_n of_o thing_n there_o suspicion_n be_v prone_a to_o rise_v for_o suspicion_n be_v not_o a_o determine_n of_o a_o thing_n it_o be_v but_o a_o slight_a kind_n of_o conceit_n it_o be_v more_o than_o a_o fear_n and_o less_o than_o judgement_n of_o a_o thing_n it_o be_v more_o than_o fear_v judgement_n for_o he_o that_o fear_n suspect_v not_o suspicion_n be_v a_o degree_n to_o judgement_n it_o do_v not_o full_o judge_v for_o than_o it_o be_v not_o suspicion_n it_o be_v more_o than_o fear_n suspect_v not_o but_o fear_n it_o conceive_v slight_o that_o such_o a_o thing_n shall_v be_v do_v and_o yet_o he_o dare_v not_o say_v it_o be_v do_v suspicion_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o inclination_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o think_v and_o imagine_v what_o ill_a of_o another_o a_o look_v curious_o under_o a_o thing_n or_o person_n as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v envy_n pry_v into_o thing_n a_o envious_a person_n search_v so_o a_o suspicious_a person_n look_v under_o to_o see_v if_o he_o can_v see_v matter_n of_o ill_a to_o fasten_v his_o ill_a soul_n upon_o so_o it_o incline_v the_o soul_n to_o think_v
book_n comfort_n against_o sin_n comfort_n against_o trouble_n outward_a and_o inward_a and_o all_o but_o till_o the_o comforter_n come_v till_o god_n send_v his_o holy_a spirit_n we_o shall_v not_o make_v use_n of_o they_o therefore_o let_v we_o labour_n to_o have_v more_o communion_n with_o god_n before_o we_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o after_o we_o have_v hear_v it_o let_v we_o have_v communion_n with_o god_n again_o that_o he_o will_v seal_v whatsoever_o be_v speak_v to_o our_o soul_n and_o make_v it_o effectual_a to_o we_o therefore_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o give_v the_o just_a due_a to_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o not_o to_o idolise_v it_o to_o make_v it_o the_o mean_n of_o comfort_n not_o to_o make_v it_o the_o ordinance_n chief_a comforter_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o it_o what_o be_v paul_n or_o apollo_n what_o be_v we_o but_o minister_n of_o faith_n and_o by_o consequent_a minister_n and_o helper_n of_o comfort_n but_o not_o the_o author_n of_o comfort_n oh_o if_o i_o have_v such_o and_o such_o here_o i_o shall_v do_v well_o i_o shall_v be_v so_o and_o so_o alas_o all_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n unless_o thou_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o can_v help_v by_o weak_a mean_n therefore_o we_o must_v not_o tie_v comfort_n and_o joy_n to_o this_o or_o that_o mean_n but_o in_o all_o mean_n look_v to_o the_o ground_n of_o comfort_n and_o the_o spring_n of_o all_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o reason_n why_o man_n do_v nor_o profit_v more_o that_o they_o be_v not_o more_o cheer_v and_o lift_v up_o with_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n which_o be_v a_o word_n of_o reconciliation_n and_o of_o joy_n and_o comfort_n it_o be_v because_o they_o be_v more_o careful_a in_o the_o use_n of_o mean_n then_o in_o go_v to_o god_n for_o his_o spirit_n to_o bless_v the_o mean_n now_o these_o must_v go_v together_o a_o care_n of_o use_v the_o mean_n and_o a_o care_n to_o pray_v to_o he_o that_o he_o will_v give_v we_o wisdom_n and_o strength_n and_o bless_a success_n in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o mean_n then_o if_o we_o will_v join_v religious_o and_o conscionable_o these_o two_o together_o the_o use_n of_o all_o mean_n conscionable_o and_o in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o to_o lift_v up_o our_o heart_n to_o god_n to_o bless_v they_o we_o shall_v find_v a_o wondrous_a success_n upon_o the_o ministry_n and_o all_o other_o good_a mean_n likewise_o so_o much_o for_o that_o i_o go_v on_o to_o the_o last_o clause_n of_o the_o chapter_n for_o by_o faith_n you_o stand_v why_o do_v the_o apostle_n vary_v the_o word_n we_o have_v not_o dominion_n over_o your_o faith_n but_o be_v helper_n of_o your_o joy_n whereas_o the_o consequence_n it_o seem_v may_v run_v thus_o we_o do_v not_o domineer_v over_o your_o faith_n but_o be_v helper_n of_o your_o faith_n he_o put_v joy_n instead_o of_o faith_n and_o afterward_o he_o bring_v in_o faith_n again_o for_o by_o faith_n you_o stand_v this_o be_v one_o main_a reason_n because_o joy_n rise_v from_o faith_n therefore_o he_o phrase_n name_v it_o in_o stead_n of_o faith_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v not_o curious_a of_o word_n but_o when_o the_o same_o spirit_n wrok_n both_o he_o name_v that_o which_o he_o think_v will_v fit_a suit_n the_o purpose_n faith_n breed_v joy_n joy_n how_o be_v that_o because_o faith_n first_o of_o all_o do_v show_v to_o we_o the_o freedom_n from_o that_o that_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o discomfort_n whatsoever_o it_o take_v away_o all_o that_o may_v discourage_v discourage_v for_o it_o take_v away_o the_o fear_n of_o damnation_n for_o our_o sin_n it_o show_v our_o reconciliation_n in_o jesus_n christ._n faith_n show_v liberty_n and_o deliverance_n and_o so_o discover_v deliverance_n by_o a_o mediator_n it_o work_v joy_n be_v not_o a_o prisoner_n joyful_a when_o he_o be_v set_v at_o liberty_n christ._n then_o likewise_o faith_n discover_v to_o we_o the_o face_n of_o god_n shine_v to_o we_o in_o jesus_n christ_n it_o show_v not_o only_a deliverance_n but_o favour_n it_o show_v we_o the_o ground_n of_o all_o the_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n whereby_o we_o be_v deliver_v and_o bring_v into_o favour_n now_o from_o this_o come_v peace_n from_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o deliverance_n and_o acceptance_n with_o god_n found_v upon_o the_o obedience_n of_o god-man_n a_o saviour_n there_o come_v in_o peace_n and_o peace_n breed_v joy_n because_o faith_n discover_v all_o these_o the_o ground_n of_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o thereupon_o peace_n therefore_o it_o cause_v joy_n for_o this_o be_v the_o pedigree_n and_o descent_n of_o joy_n as_o the_o apostle_n have_v it_o rom._n 14._o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v in_o righteousness_n and_o peace_n and_o joy_n there_o must_v joy_n be_v righteousness_n first_o of_o a_o mediatur_fw-la to_o satisfy_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o procure_v his_o favour_n from_o righteousness_n come_v peace_n peace_n with_o god_n peace_n of_o conscience_n from_o peace_n come_v joy_n there_o be_v no_o joy_n without_o peace_n no_o peace_n without_o righteousness_n and_o this_o whole_a pedigree_n of_o joy_n as_o it_o be_v be_v excellent_o set_v down_o rom._n 5._o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n and_o have_v access_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n by_o which_o grace_n we_o stand_v and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o rejoice_v so_o there_o be_v justification_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o
