this_o hope_n and_o trust_v in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n be_v perfect_a no_o heaviness_n shall_v ever_o oppress_v the_o believe_a heart_n therefore_o david_n use_v this_o exhortation_n that_o israel_n after_o it_o have_v once_o obtain_v this_o mercy_n hope_n shall_v still_o persevere_v in_o wait_v on_o the_o lord_n and_o not_o suffer_v this_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o mercy_n pronounce_v that_o there_o be_v mercy_n and_o goodness_n with_o the_o lord_n if_o we_o can_v but_o only_o wait_v on_o the_o lord_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o he_o this_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n we_o have_v great_a need_n of_o for_o if_o we_o follow_v our_o own_o sense_n we_o shall_v be_v deceive_v and_o find_v in_o ourselves_o the_o contrary_n but_o we_o may_v not_o judge_v of_o these_o matter_n according_a to_o our_o own_o sense_n or_o as_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o but_o we_o must_v stand_v to_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o think_v with_o ourselves_o that_o these_o be_v matter_n of_o faith_n and_o not_o of_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n for_o to_o believe_v be_v not_o to_o feel_v not_o because_o these_o thing_n shall_v never_o be_v feel_v which_o we_o now_o believe_v but_o because_o faith_n must_v go_v before_o feeling_n and_o experience_n and_o we_o must_v believe_v the_o word_n although_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o judgement_n never_o so_o much_o to_o the_o contrary_n as_o when_o our_o heart_n oppress_v with_o calamity_n do_v think_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o we_o not_o to_o care_v for_o we_o but_o to_o hate_v we_o then_o faith_n clean_a contrary_n must_v thus_o assure_v itself_o that_o with_o god_n there_o be_v neither_o anger_n nor_o hatred_n that_o he_o neither_o think_v of_o punishment_n nor_o offence_n but_o although_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v afflict_v yet_o he_o do_v it_o not_o to_o the_o end_n to_o destroy_v we_o for_o with_o he_o say_v the_o psalm_n be_v mercy_n with_o faith_n join_v hope_v also_o so_o that_o albeit_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o heart_n shall_v work_v never_o so_o much_o against_o we_o and_o that_o god_n shall_v seem_v never_o so_o sharp_a a_o enemy_n in_o punish_v we_o yet_o let_v we_o not_o yield_v so_o much_o to_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n as_o to_o the_o write_a word_n and_o to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o pronounce_v that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v mercy_n who_o love_v we_o &_o seek_v to_o do_v we_o good_a this_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o we_o shall_v think_v yea_o most_o assure_o believe_v 5.3_o that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v no_o anger_n but_o if_o any_o calamity_n

between_o the_o law_n &_o the_o gospel_n also_o between_o the_o disciple_n of_o the_o law_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n &_o beat_v back_o satan_n with_o this_o answer_n that_o like_o a_o lie_a spirit_n he_o seek_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o blind_a and_o deceive_v the_o heart_n with_o falsehood_n and_o lie_n for_o whereas_o hard_a and_o stony_a heart_n be_v those_o he_o do_v not_o kill_v or_o terrify_v but_o flatter_v and_o fill_v they_o with_o hope_n &_o fair_a promise_n which_o do_v not_o pertain_v to_o such_o heart_n contrariwise_o where_o as_o such_o tender_a and_o timorous_a heart_n be_v as_o be_v to_o much_o terrify_v already_o and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v confirm_v &_o raise_v up_o with_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o heart_n satan_n most_o of_o all_o not_o only_o go_v about_o further_o to_o afflict_v and_o terrify_v but_o to_o beat_v they_o down_o also_o to_o utter_v discomfort_n wherefore_o the_o christian_a man_n must_v learn_v and_o labour_n by_o feeling_n and_o practice_n to_o make_v this_o distinction_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o say_v unto_o satan_n away_o from_o i_o satan_n with_o thy_o lie_n when_o i_o be_o void_a of_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n secure_a and_o hard_a heart_a then_o come_v and_o plead_v the_o law_n against_o i_o then_o will_v i_o hear_v thou_o for_o then_o that_o be_v the_o time_n to_o teach_v the_o law_n but_o since_o law_n only_o than_o either_o desperation_n must_v needs_o follow_v if_o the_o law_n be_v not_o perfect_o observe_v or_o else_o presumption_n if_o it_o be_v observe_v in_o desperation_n there_o be_v great_a fear_n than_o shall_v be_v in_o presumption_n there_o be_v no_o fear_n at_o all_o therefore_o the_o mean_a between_o they_o both_o be_v this_o that_o god_n shut_v up_o all_o under_o mercy_n righteousness_n notwithstanding_o he_o take_v not_o away_o the_o law_n for_o without_o the_o law_n this_o life_n can_v not_o continue_v in_o what_o a_o miserable_a state_n shall_v the_o common_a wealth_n be_v if_o murder_n adultery_n and_o robbery_n shall_v be_v commit_v &_o permit_v without_o punishment_n or_o execution_n of_o law_n moreover_o the_o work_n and_o exercise_n of_o the_o godly_a must_v be_v guide_v &_o order_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o this_o purpose_n god_n will_v have_v the_o law_n to_o continue_v and_o account_v it_o for_o a_o holy_a obedience_n in_o those_o that_o do_v believe_v but_o as_o touch_v sin_n he_o command_v that_o we_o shall_v cast_v away_o all_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o law_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n only_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n crucify_v for_o our_o sin_n by_o this_o mean_n presumption_n be_v take_v away_o and_o fear_n remain_v not_o such_o a_o fear_n as_o be_v in_o the_o desperate_a but_o such_o as_o we_o see_v in_o good_a and_o well_o nurter_v child_n towards_o their_o parent_n no_o monk_n therefore_o shall_v be_v save_v because_o of_o his_o order_n or_o strait_a life_n i_o likewise_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v because_o i_o preach_v christ_n with_o careful_a diligence_n &_o faithful_a endeavour_n the_o prince_n be_v not_o save_v because_o he_o faithful_o govern_v and_o defend_v his_o subject_n but_o as_o touch_v the_o monk_n you_o may_v easy_o prove_v this_o to_o be_v true_a for_o that_o kind_a of_o life_n be_v altogether_o contrary_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o to_o teach_v and_o instruct_v the_o church_n to_o govern_v the_o common_a wealth_n be_v in_o deed_n most_o holy_a and_o excellent_a work_n and_o yet_o be_v they_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n which_o of_o themselves_o bring_v either_o desperation_n or_o presumption_n wherefore_o though_o these_o work_n be_v never_o so_o perfect_a and_o holy_a yet_o be_v there_o no_o salvation_n but_o in_o this_o alone_a that_o there_o be_v mercy_n with_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v fear_v wherefore_o god_n have_v just_o shut_v up_o all_o under_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v have_v mercy_n upon_o all_o for_o if_o you_o leave_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n whereby_o he_o may_v deserve_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n no_o man_n will_v fear_v or_o worship_n god_n but_o all_o man_n will_v come_v unto_o god_n as_o the_o monk_n do_v with_o their_o abstinence_n prayer_n obedience_n and_o such_o like_a but_o by_o this_o mean_v god_n be_v lose_v and_o the_o idol_n of_o man_n heart_n be_v worship_v in_o steed_n of_o god._n god._n for_o while_o the_o monk_n think_v to_o please_v god_n with_o his_o hempen_a girdle_n wherewith_o he_o ought_v rather_o to_o be_v hang_v up_o upon_o a_o tree_n then_o gird_v while_o he_o think_v by_o the_o observation_n of_o other_o tradition_n to_o please_v god_n do_v he_o not_o depart_v from_o the_o true_a god_n &_o set_v his_o own_o imagination_n in_o the_o stead_n of_o god_n while_o he_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n think_v the_o same_o that_o he_o imagine_v of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o follow_v plain_a idolatry_n which_o imagine_v a_o strange_a god_n and_o lose_v the_o true_a god_n for_o the_o true_a god_n be_v propitiation_n and_o mercy_n through_o christ_n but_o such_o as_o glory_v in_o their_o work_n will_v make_v their_o work_n propitiatory_a and_o available_a to_o deserve_v grace_n believe_v wherefore_o god_n reject_v all_o work_n and_o set_v forth_o his_o naked_a and_o bare_a mercy_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v and_o not_o contemn_v of_o the_o presumptuous_a hereby_o take_v away_o all_o cause_n of_o presumption_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o out_o of_o this_o verse_n or_o this_o general_a proposition_n that_o when_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n of_o grace_n or_o propitiation_n be_v lose_v it_o follow_v that_o in_o steed_n thereof_o idolatry_n must_v needs_o reign_v for_o take_v away_o grace_n &_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n also_o as_o the_o prophet_n say_v must_v needs_o follow_v and_o what_o be_v it_o else_o to_o fear_n god_n but_o to_o reverence_v &_o to_o worship_n god_n also_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o be_v full_a of_o mercy_n &_o goodness_n &_o therefore_o to_o obey_v he_o this_o god_n do_v i_o lose_v when_o i_o be_v a_o monk_n and_o walk_v in_o the_o confidence_n of_o my_o own_o righteousness_n for_o by_o experience_n i_o be_o able_a to_o prove_v that_o of_o the_o most_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n there_o can_v nothing_o else_o follow_v but_o either_o desperation_n which_o be_v more_o seldom_o or_o presumption_n which_o be_v more_o common_a for_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o the_o devil_n can_v not_o beware_v but_o they_o must_v needs_o presume_v thou_o will_v say_v then_o shall_v we_o not_o keep_v the_o law_n justify_v shall_v we_o not_o do_v good_a work_n yes_o very_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v they_o for_o god_n therefore_o have_v a_o church_n
the_o same_o in_o deed_n for_o first_o these_o evil_n which_o the_o father_n of_o lie_n stir_v up_o by_o wicked_a doctrine_n the_o godly_a can_v not_o behold_v without_o great_a grief_n and_o sorrow_n beside_o this_o they_o be_v without_o all_o hope_n of_o remedy_n for_o that_o the_o rage_n of_o pestilent_a doctrine_n be_v more_o horrible_a than_o the_o force_n and_o violence_n of_o fire_n and_o water_n which_o sudden_o consume_v and_o destroy_v all_o thing_n the_o heart_n therefore_o be_v on_o each_o side_n trouble_v and_o vex_v both_o with_o fear_n of_o the_o calamity_n that_o shall_v follow_v and_o also_o with_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o present_a evil_n now_o if_o there_o be_v join_v with_o all_o these_o thing_n a_o inward_a cross_n and_o affliction_n soul_n so_o that_o the_o heart_n do_v also_o feel_v the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n here_o it_o seem_v impossible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o pray_v and_o doubtless_o a_o man_n unexpert_a and_o unskilful_a in_o these_o matter_n and_o presume_v of_o the_o word_n and_o his_o own_o knowledge_n shall_v gain_v nothing_o thereby_o but_o infinite_a trouble_n and_o vexation_n for_o to_o teach_v to_o reprove_v and_o to_o convince_v be_v not_o sufficient_a but_o god_n withal_o must_v give_v the_o increase_n that_o not_o only_o we_o with_o our_o brethren_n may_v be_v preserve_v in_o sound_a doctrine_n but_o also_o such_o as_o teach_v the_o contrary_n may_v be_v root_v out_o and_o bring_v to_o naught_o and_o this_o by_o prayer_n only_o be_v obtain_v but_o how_o hard_o a_o thing_n this_o be_v we_o have_v already_o declare_v to_o read_v the_o word_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o to_o teach_v the_o word_n be_v in_o deed_n excellent_a and_o heavenly_a work_n which_o require_v the_o help_n and_o aid_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n faith_n but_o the_o inward_a practice_n of_o faith_n so_o to_o convert_v unto_o the_o lord_n so_o to_o pray_v so_o to_o presume_v of_o god_n favour_n that_o thy_o prayer_n shall_v please_v he_o and_o that_o he_o will_v hear_v the_o same_o that_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n in_o deed_n for_o fearful_a conscience_n many_o time_n feel_v not_o this_o certainty_n and_o assurance_n in_o themselves_o but_o be_v bring_v to_o such_o doubt_v and_o mistrust_n that_o they_o can_v conceive_v no_o hope_n of_o help_n or_o comfort_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o remorse_n of_o conscience_n gild_v of_o sin_n and_o the_o feel_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n for_o in_o this_o case_n it_o oftentimes_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o mind_n begin_v first_o to_o doubt_v whether_o prayer_n will_v any_o thing_n avail_n or_o not_o they_o that_o be_v bring_v to_o this_o point_n can_v not_o pray_v especial_o if_o they_o measure_v the_o same_o after_o the_o sense_n &_o feeling_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n but_o here_o thou_o must_v not_o regard_v what_o thou_o be_v but_o rather_o look_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n the_o necessity_n of_o prayer_n the_o danger_n that_o follow_v the_o neglect_v thereof_o and_o the_o thing_n itself_o for_o the_o which_o thou_o ought_v to_o pray_v set_v these_o thing_n before_o thine_o eye_n albeit_o thine_o own_o conscience_n and_o unworthiness_n call_v thou_o from_o prayer_n yet_o shall_v thou_o be_v constrain_v by_o prayer_n to_o fly_v to_o god_n for_o help_n and_o succour_v for_o if_o a_o man_n for_o example_n sake_n have_v commit_v theft_n murder_n or_o some_o other_o notorious_a crime_n and_o in_o fly_v away_o fall_v into_o the_o water_n and_o so_o into_o danger_n of_o drown_v shall_v he_o not_o pray_v because_o his_o conscience_n accuse_v he_o that_o he_o have_v do_v wicked_o nay_o how_o much_o the_o more_o great_a and_o grievous_a the_o sin_n be_v and_o the_o necessity_n of_o prayer_n more_o urgent_a so_o much_o the_o more_o earnest_o ought_v the_o mind_n to_o be_v stir_v up_o and_o more_o ready_a to_o prayer_n in_o like_a manner_n must_v we_o do_v also_o in_o this_o tentation_n and_o danger_n of_o wicked_a doctrine_n and_o whatsoever_o we_o be_v we_o must_v rather_o consider_v the_o great_a enormity_n that_o satan_n raise_v up_o by_o lie_v minister_n then_o whether_o we_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v hear_v or_o no._n prayer_n to_o this_o do_v the_o promise_n also_o allure_v we_o for_o we_o have_v a_o promise_n in_o christ_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v hear_v yea_o and_o christ_n himself_o also_o have_v prescribe_v unto_o we_o the_o very_a word_n syllable_n &_o letter_n which_o we_o shall_v use_v in_o prayer_n we_o have_v also_o a_o commandment_n to_o pray_v so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o our_o choice_n to_o pray_v or_o not_o to_o pray_v but_o it_o be_v a_o work_n command_v of_o god._n now_o when_o we_o remember_v these_o thing_n and_o then_o consider_v on_o the_o one_o side_n how_o necessary_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v for_o we_o to_o pray_v and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o great_a the_o danger_n be_v if_o we_o do_v not_o pray_v then_o be_v our_o mind_n quicken_v and_o the_o tentation_n or_o conscience_n of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n be_v prayer_n as_o it_o be_v swallow_v up_o like_a as_o it_o happen_v also_o in_o sudden_a danger_n as_o when_o a_o man_n in_o his_o journey_n fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o thief_n or_o be_v in_o great_a peril_n of_o drown_v here_o before_o he_o can_v once_o think_v of_o his_o own_o unworthiness_n he_o burst_v out_o into_o these_o word_n or_o this_o cogitation_n oh_o god_n be_v merciful_a unto_o i_o and_o here_o the_o say_n of_o the_o physician_n be_v find_v most_o true_a that_o sharp_a sauce_n provoke_v the_o appetite_n for_o there_o be_v no_o better_a schoolmaster_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v than_o necessity_n but_o while_o we_o walk_v in_o security_n and_o be_v not_o touch_v with_o any_o feel_n of_o present_a danger_n no_o marvel_n be_v it_o if_o our_o prayer_n be_v either_o no_o prayer_n at_o all_o or_o else_o in_o deed_n very_o faint_a and_o cold_a for_o i_o own_o part_n i_o can_v say_v by_o experience_n experience_n that_o i_o never_o pray_v more_o hearty_o then_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n and_o this_o be_v that_o sharp_a sauce_n which_o stir_v up_o also_o in_o david_n a_o hunger_n as_o it_o be_v and_o a_o appetite_n to_o pray_v as_o he_o say_v i_o call_v unto_o the_o lord_n in_o my_o trouble_n etc_n etc_n we_o may_v learn_v therefore_o out_o of_o this_o verse_n that_o david_n use_v this_o remedy_n against_o lie_a tongue_n that_o first_o by_o doctrine_n he_o stir_v up_o himself_o and_o other_o prayer_n and_o then_o he_o pray_v in_o like_a manner_n ought_v we_o to_o do_v even_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o cause_n or_o necessity_n which_o the_o lord_n prayer_n also_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o for_o in_o that_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v pollute_v man_n conscience_n pervert_v and_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n hinder_v we_o have_v in_o deed_n great_a cause_n to_o say_v hallow_a be_v thy_o name_n that_o these_o abomination_n and_o blasphemy_n may_v have_v a_o end_n thy_o kingdom_n come_v which_o by_o the_o kingdom_n of_o satan_n be_v in_o a_o manner_n oppress_v he_o that_o pray_v after_o this_o sort_n shall_v fill_v heaven_n with_o his_o sigh_n and_o groan_n whereas_o if_o we_o live_v at_o ease_n and_o feel_v no_o trouble_n our_o prayer_n be_v so_o cold_a that_o scarce_o our_o mouth_n be_v fill_v therewith_o this_o cause_n and_o necessity_n of_o prayer_n david_n express_v when_o he_o say_v i_o call_v unto_o the_o lord_n in_o my_o trouble_n etc_n etc_n for_o there_o must_v be_v some_o great_a necessity_n to_o constrain_v we_o to_o pray_v as_o our_o own_o salvation_n the_o salvation_n of_o our_o brethren_n death_n eternal_a our_o sin_n our_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n the_o glory_n of_o god_n the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n etc_n etc_n all_o which_o be_v set_v forth_o in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n and_o if_o we_o consider_v they_o as_o we_o shall_v do_v they_o will_v constrain_v we_o to_o pour_v out_o true_a and_o hearty_a prayer_n unto_o god_n with_o sigh_n and_o groan_n let_v we_o consider_v well_o these_o thing_n and_o with_o our_o prayer_n let_v we_o burst_v through_o the_o cloud_n which_o hide_v from_o we_o the_o presence_n of_o our_o most_o gracious_a god_n god._n and_o think_v that_o prayer_n be_v a_o acceptable_a sacrifice_n to_o god_n and_o such_o a_o service_n as_o he_o himself_o require_v of_o we_o some_o seek_v a_o mean_a help_n and_o trust_v to_o other_o man_n prayer_n which_o in_o deed_n be_v not_o to_o be_v neglect_v for_o the_o prayer_n of_o many_o have_v a_o more_o force_n and_o power_n but_o thou_o also_o must_v pray_v as_o a_o member_n of_o the_o church_n which_o with_o one_o voice_n say_v our_o father_n etc_n etc_n for_o he_o will_v not_o be_v the_o father_n of_o
this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o those_o that_o be_v infect_v with_o this_o poison_n the_o comtempt_n of_o the_o word_n i_o mean_v and_o the_o child_n of_o god_n that_o as_o they_o be_v whole_o bend_v to_o seek_v and_o advance_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o everliving_a god_n so_o be_v these_o either_o inflame_a with_o a_o devilish_a desire_n to_o maintain_v &_o set_v forth_o damnable_a doctrine_n wicked_a opinion_n and_o false_a worship_n be_v whole_o give_v over_o to_o serve_v the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n and_o their_o god_n mammon_n seek_v with_o greediness_n and_o pleasure_n their_o own_o perdition_n &_o damnation_n and_o so_o albeit_o they_o be_v already_o whole_o possess_v in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o devil_n yet_o be_v they_o merry_a and_o joyful_a but_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v such_o as_o for_o their_o horrible_a example_n be_v set_v forth_o in_o the_o story_n of_o the_o sodomite_n let_v we_o pray_v unto_o god_n therefore_o that_o he_o will_v preserve_v we_o faithful_a for_o when_o he_o say_v we_o will_v go_v into_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n what_o notable_a thing_n can_v we_o see_v in_o these_o word_n if_o we_o do_v but_o only_o behold_v the_o stone_n timber_n gold_n and_o other_o ornament_n of_o the_o material_a temple_n but_o to_o go_v into_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n signify_v another_o manner_n of_o thing_n namely_o to_o come_v together_o where_o we_o may_v have_v god_n present_a with_o we_o hear_v his_o word_n call_v upon_o his_o holy_a name_n and_o receive_v help_n and_o succour_v in_o our_o necessity_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o false_a definition_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o the_o papist_n make_v that_o it_o be_v a_o house_n build_v with_o stone_n &_o timber_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n what_o this_o temple_n be_v they_o themselves_o know_v not_o for_o the_o temple_n of_o solomon_n be_v not_o therefore_o beautiful_a because_o it_o be_v adorn_v with_o gold_n and_o silver_n and_o other_o precious_a ornament_n but_o the_o true_a beauty_n of_o that_o temple_n be_v because_o in_o that_o place_n the_o people_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n call_v upon_o his_o name_n find_v he_o merciful_a give_v peace_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n etc_n etc_n this_o be_v right_o to_o behold_v the_o temple_n and_o not_o as_o the_o visured_a bishop_n behold_v their_o idolatrous_a temple_n when_o they_o consecrate_v it_o these_o be_v then_o great_a cause_n of_o joy_n and_o gladness_n to_o have_v access_n unto_o the_o lord_n to_o hear_v this_o consolation_n that_o he_o be_v our_o god_n which_o will_v hear_v we_o which_o will_v deliver_v we_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n which_o will_v forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n and_o at_o the_o last_o will_v give_v we_o everlasting_a life_n for_o these_o great_a benefit_n say_v david_n we_o give_v thank_n unto_o god_n and_o we_o rejoice_v that_o we_o may_v come_v together_o into_o that_o place_n wherein_o god_n work_v all_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o sort_n for_o albeit_o in_o this_o psalm_n he_o join_v household_n government_n or_o matrimony_n with_o policy_n and_o politic_a government_n and_o wish_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n and_o peace_n unto_o they_o both_o yet_o have_v he_o here_o a_o more_o respect_n to_o household_n government_n because_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o beginning_n of_o politic_a government_n for_o the_o child_n which_o we_o bring_v up_o and_o instruct_v at_o home_o the_o posterity_n will_v afterwards_o make_v governor_n of_o the_o common_a weal_n for_o of_o house_n be_v make_v city_n of_o city_n shire_n of_o shire_n a_o common_a weal_n or_o kingdom_n household_n government_n therefore_o be_v call_v the_o fountain_n of_o policy_n &_o politic_a government_n for_o where_o household_n and_o family_n be_v not_o maintain_v there_o can_v be_v no_o city_n no_o common_a weal_n no_o kingdom_n wherefore_o to_o this_o psalm_n we_o will_v give_v this_o title_n that_o it_o be_v a_o holy_a hymme_n or_o a_o song_n in_o the_o praise_n of_o matrimony_n whereby_o the_o prophet_n comfort_v such_o as_o live_v in_o that_o holy_a state_n wish_v unto_o they_o and_o promise_v all_o felicity_n and_o blessing_n of_o god_n these_o thing_n may_v afterward_o be_v also_o apply_v unto_o politic_a government_n for_o as_o god_n bless_v matrimony_n because_o it_o be_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o a_o kind_n of_o life_n which_o high_o please_v god_n even_o so_o be_v the_o magistrate_n also_o ordain_v of_o god_n and_o have_v a_o certain_a promise_n of_o the_o blessing_n of_o god._n and_o here_o appear_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o hide_v from_o we_o those_o thing_n that_o in_o this_o kind_n of_o life_n be_v grevous_a or_o odious_a and_o speak_v only_o of_o those_o which_o be_v most_o meet_a to_o persuade_v and_o be_v good_a thing_n in_o deed_n the_o world_n do_v the_o contrary_a for_o it_o be_v not_o only_o ignorant_a of_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o be_v in_o matrimony_n but_o also_o if_o it_o see_v any_o such_o it_o esteem_v they_o as_o nothing_o because_o of_o the_o trouble_n which_o present_o it_o feel_v no_o marvel_v be_v it_o therefore_o that_o when_o wicked_a man_n speak_v of_o this_o kind_n of_o life_n they_o speak_v after_o a_o other_o sort_n &_o with_o other_o word_n than_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v wont_a to_o speak_v for_o they_o follow_v the_o sense_n and_o judgement_n of_o the_o flesh_n only_o and_o see_v nothing_o else_o either_o in_o civil_a government_n or_o in_o matrimony_n and_o household_n affair_n but_o those_o thing_n which_o seem_v to_o be_v painful_a hard_a and_o full_a of_o trouble_n and_o not_o only_o so_o do_v but_o those_o thing_n also_o which_o in_o these_o kind_n of_o life_n be_v divine_a and_o heavenly_a in_o deed_n they_o do_v not_o perceive_v because_o of_o those_o small_a trouble_n and_o discommodity_n which_o touch_v the_o flesh_n and_o hereof_o come_v these_o say_n there_o be_v no_o city_n without_o a_o burdeâ—_n that_o be_v without_o a_o woman_n a_o wife_n be_v a_o necessary_a evil_n to_o bury_v a_o wife_n be_v better_a than_o to_o marry_v she_o if_o we_o can_v be_v without_o woman_n we_o shall_v be_v without_o great_a trouble_n and_o such_o other_o like_a say_n tend_v to_o the_o dispraise_n and_o reproach_n of_o woman_n the_o cause_n why_o man_n do_v thus_o perverse_o judge_v be_v this_o that_o the_o flesh_n be_v to_o poison_a with_o original_a sin_n that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v content_a to_o bear_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n it_o seek_v after_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v sweet_a and_o pleasant_a but_o trouble_n and_o travel_n it_o can_v not_o bear_v wherefore_o either_o it_o fly_v altogether_o from_o matrimony_n and_o all_o civil_a affair_n as_o the_o epicure_n and_o bellygod_n do_v or_o else_o abuse_v the_o same_o to_o his_o own_o lust_n and_o pleasure_n so_o blind_a be_v it_o through_o original_a sin_n with_o the_o desire_n of_o pleasure_n â–ª_o glory_a and_o riches_n necessary_a it_o be_v therefore_o to_o apply_v some_o medicine_n unto_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o somewhat_o to_o repress_v and_o to_o bridle_v the_o wanton_a flesh_n with_o those_o trouble_n which_o be_v both_o in_o matrimony_n and_o in_o civil_a affair_n wherefore_o when_o we_o read_v these_o praise_n of_o matrimony_n in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o compare_v they_o with_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n we_o shall_v see_v the_o one_o to_o be_v clean_o contrary_a to_o the_o other_o we_o must_v say_v therefore_o that_o these_o thing_n be_v true_a according_a to_o the_o spirit_n but_o according_a to_o the_o flesh_n they_o be_v not_o true_a so_o where_o he_o say_v afterward_o of_o the_o godly_a marry_a man_n thou_o shall_v be_v bless_v &_o it_o shall_v be_v well_o with_o thou_o the_o flesh_n think_v the_o contrary_a and_o judge_v the_o marry_a person_n to_o be_v most_o miserable_a and_o most_o unhappy_a because_o he_o be_v constrain_v to_o get_v his_o live_n with_o great_a labour_n and_o travel_v for_o the_o world_n know_v not_o the_o thing_n that_o pertain_v to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o the_o good_a thing_n and_o great_a blessing_n of_o god_n that_o be_v in_o matrimony_n it_o see_v not_o but_o rest_v only_o in_o the_o creature_n and_o see_v not_o god_n create_v govern_v and_o bless_v the_o creature_n contrariwise_o the_o holy_a ghost_n look_v to_o the_o creator_n &_o magnify_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n although_o it_o be_v overwhelm_v with_o never_o so_o many_o affliction_n and_o tentation_n and_o for_o the_o trouble_n and_o discommodity_n that_o be_v incident_a to_o these_o kind_n of_o life_n either_o he_o cover_v they_o or_o else_o he_o make_v they_o less_o than_o they_o be_v and_o this_o the_o world_n can_v not_o do_v the_o wise_a man_n therefore_o as_o in_o history_n we_o may_v see_v do_v refuse_v to_o bear_v office_n in_o the_o common_a weal_n or_o to_o deal_v in_o public_a affair_n the_o same_o thing_n come_v to_o pass_v also_o in_o matrimony_n for_o young_a man_n will_v hardly_o suffer_v this_o yoke_n to_o be_v lay_v upon_o they_o as_o the_o old_a man_n say_v of_o they_o in_o the_o poet._n they_o say_v he_o which_o be_v in_o love_n he_o mean_v unchaste_a love_n and_o fleshly_a lust_n can_v not_o abide_v to_o hear_v of_o marriage_n they_o will_v not_o forsake_v their_o filthy_a pleasure_n to_o live_v chaste_o in_o holy_a matrimony_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o which_o through_o vehement_a love_n be_v bring_v under_o this_o yoke_n when_o they_o see_v no_o such_o success_n thereof_o as_o they_o look_v for_o but_o that_o some_o trouble_n or_o other_o do_v follow_v which_o they_o be_v blind_v with_o love_n can_v not_o foresee_v than_o they_o complain_v than_o they_o repent_v that_o ever_o they_o bring_v themselves_o into_o such_o bondage_n hereupon_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o husband_n will_v rather_o bear_v with_o all_o wickedness_n in_o a_o harlot_n &_o a_o strumpet_n then_o with_o any_o little_a fault_n in_o his_o own_o wife_n as_o also_o the_o wife_n except_o she_o be_v very_o godly_a will_v soon_o wink_v at_o the_o wickedness_n of_o a_o adulterer_n then_o at_o the_o small_a offence_n of_o her_o own_o husband_n for_o nature_n can_v not_o bear_v these_o yoke_n if_o man_n be_v not_o well_o instruct_v by_o the_o word_n and_o lighten_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o so_o look_v unto_o the_o creator_n who_o have_v ordain_v both_o family_n and_o common_a weal_n &_o will_v have_v they_o to_o be_v govern_v and_o guide_v by_o this_o miserable_a and_o frail_a flesh_n they_o that_o have_v not_o this_o knowledge_n be_v soon_o provoke_v to_o impatiency_n when_o they_o see_v that_o all_o thing_n have_v not_o such_o success_n as_o they_o will_v wherefore_o even_o such_o as_o be_v godly_a mind_v must_v be_v teach_v exhort_v and_o stir_v up_o to_o behold_v some_o thing_n above_o &_o beyond_o these_o trouble_n reject_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o wise_a man_n of_o this_o world_n and_o to_o look_v to_o the_o true_a and_o inestimable_a good_a thing_n which_o god_n have_v hide_v in_o these_o kind_n of_o life_n then_o shall_v they_o more_o easy_o bear_v their_o trouble_n and_o show_v their_o obedience_n unto_o god_n when_o he_o send_v diverse_a tentation_n and_o to_o this_o end_n we_o will_v interpret_v this_o psalm_n this_o marriage_n song_n that_o we_o may_v behold_v those_o spiritual_a good_a thing_n which_o god_n have_v hide_v in_o matrimony_n &_o esteem_v the_o same_o according_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o be_v not_o like_a to_o this_o world_n which_o see_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o understand_v they_o and_o hear_v the_o blessing_n and_o sweet_a promise_n of_o god_n and_o do_v not_o believe_v they_o verse_n 1._o bless_a be_v all_o they_o which_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o walk_n in_o his_o way_n
first_o of_o all_o here_o be_v to_o be_v note_v that_o the_o prophet_n do_v not_o by_o and_o by_o enter_v iâ—ts_n the_o promise_n of_o god_n concern_v matrimony_n as_o though_o they_o be_v give_v only_o in_o respect_n of_o matrimony_n but_o he_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o table_n &_o call_v he_o bless_v that_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o this_o he_o do_v to_o show_v that_o the_o world_n do_v not_o understand_v what_o it_o be_v to_o marry_v a_o wife_n and_o to_o live_v in_o the_o state_n of_o christian_a matrimony_n wherefore_o if_o any_o trouble_n come_v it_o can_v not_o bear_v they_o patient_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o bless_v but_o rather_o miserable_a and_o unhappy_a but_o he_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n whether_o he_o be_v call_v to_o any_o government_n in_o the_o common_a weal_n or_o marry_v a_o wife_n be_v bless_v what_o success_n so_o ever_o follow_v thereof_o for_o it_o may_v be_v that_o even_o they_o also_o which_o fear_v the_o lord_n shall_v have_v no_o good_a success_n in_o matrimony_n but_o shall_v be_v couple_v either_o with_o wicked_a or_o with_o froward_a and_o disobedient_a wife_n or_o else_o they_o shall_v be_v otherwise_o shake_v with_o one_o tentation_n or_o other_o as_o with_o the_o untimely_a death_n of_o a_o good_a wife_n or_o with_o untractable_a and_o degenerate_a child_n or_o with_o barrenness_n &_o lack_n of_o fruit_n here_o if_o a_o man_n be_v godly_a and_o fear_v god_n he_o shall_v soon_o overcome_v these_o trouble_n &_o tentation_n for_o thus_o will_v he_o think_v with_o himself_o i_o have_v meet_v with_o such_o a_o wife_n as_o be_v unto_o i_o many_o way_n a_o great_a cross_n and_o vexation_n with_o who_o no_o man_n else_o can_v quiet_o live_v one_o day_n but_o this_o gift_n god_n have_v give_v i_o that_o i_o shall_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v he_o to_o be_v both_o my_o creator_n and_o father_n and_o to_o learn_v patient_o to_o endure_v &_o abide_v his_o good_a will_n and_o pleasure_n etc_n etc_n with_o this_o gift_n be_v overcome_v not_o only_o all_o the_o trouble_n and_o misery_n of_o matrimony_n but_o all_o calamity_n beside_o what_o so_o ever_o the_o prophet_n therefore_o begin_v this_o holy_a hymn_n or_o this_o marriage_n song_n after_o this_o manner_n if_o thou_o will_v be_v happy_a and_o bless_a &_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o live_v in_o the_o state_n of_o matrimony_n this_o shall_v thou_o find_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v give_v unto_o thou_o a_o wife_n house_n and_o child_n with_o other_o commodity_n but_o above_o all_o thing_n see_v that_o thou_o fear_v god_n and_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n begin_v this_o kind_n of_o life_n this_o be_v a_o profitable_a doctrine_n which_o here_o the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v forth_o even_o at_o the_o beginning_n to_o the_o end_n that_o he_o which_o can_v not_o live_v a_o single_a life_n shall_v begin_v his_o matrimony_n with_o the_o first_o commandment_n and_o call_v upon_o god_n for_o his_o help_n &_o succour_n shall_v come_v forth_o into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n and_o say_v lord_n thou_o say_v unto_o i_o in_o thy_o word_n that_o thou_o be_v and_o will_v be_v my_o lord_n and_o my_o god_n thou_o have_v make_v i_o a_o man_n or_o thing_n come_v lucky_o to_o pass_v then_o shall_v they_o have_v good_a success_n the_o holy_a ghost_n begin_v his_o holy_a hymn_n after_o a_o other_o manner_n than_o other_o poet_n do_v for_o he_o exhort_v we_o that_o we_o shall_v first_o of_o all_o call_n upon_o god_n and_o conceive_v in_o our_o heart_n a_o sure_a trust_n of_o his_o mercy_n for_o god_n will_v not_o turn_v his_o ear_n from_o thou_o if_o thou_o call_v he_o thy_o creator_n but_o will_v again_o acknowledge_v thou_o to_o be_v his_o creature_n and_o will_v not_o deny_v this_o to_o be_v his_o work_n that_o thou_o be_v a_o man_n drown_v in_o wealth_n and_o pleasure_n that_o they_o live_v all_o together_o without_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o this_o be_v a_o far_o great_a misery_n but_o worthy_o do_v these_o misery_n and_o calamity_n fall_v upon_o they_o for_o why_o do_v they_o not_o join_v withal_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n here_o thou_o must_v learn_v therefore_o to_o live_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n who_o have_v create_v thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v a_o husband_n or_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v a_o wife_n and_o he_o will_v also_o govern_v bless_v and_o prosper_v thy_o marriage_n but_o if_o thou_o will_v midst_n of_o devil_n the_o husband_n as_o touch_v the_o flesh_n soon_o loathe_v or_o hate_v the_o wife_n or_o the_o wife_n her_o husband_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n hereof_o even_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n for_o that_o matrimony_n consist_v in_o the_o flesh_n which_o be_v whole_o corrupt_a &_o poison_a with_o sin_n this_o the_o flesh_n i_o mean_v satan_n inflame_v with_o hatred_n and_o every_o light_a offence_n or_o else_o with_o jealousy_n wherefore_o if_o thou_o look_v not_o unto_o the_o will_n of_o god_n thy_o matrimony_n can_v never_o be_v unto_o thou_o either_o stable_n or_o comfortable_a wherefore_o youth_n must_v be_v well_o instruct_v as_o touch_v matrimony_n that_o when_o any_o man_n shall_v marry_v a_o wife_n he_o may_v live_v with_o she_o in_o the_o favour_n and_o of_o the_o bridegroom_n but_o if_o he_o be_v evil_a he_o be_v the_o bridegroom_n of_o satan_n and_o the_o friend_n of_o judas_n this_o be_v then_o the_o sum_n and_o effect_n of_o our_o answer_n that_o this_o psalm_n compel_v none_o to_o marry_v as_o though_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o all_o shall_v live_v in_o matrimony_n for_o it_o be_v not_o against_o these_o word_n of_o christ_n 9.12_o he_o affair_n which_o be_v do_v by_o the_o man_n and_o can_v not_o be_v do_v by_o the_o woman_n but_o the_o holy_a ghost_n consider_v the_o gift_n and_o through_o the_o greatness_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o gift_n he_o cover_v what_o incommodity_n so_o ever_o be_v in_o the_o womankind_n and_o shadow_v the_o same_o with_o most_o excellent_a and_o goodly_a similitude_n now_o that_o we_o may_v see_v certain_a danger_n of_o death_n and_o condemnation_n wherefore_o the_o prophet_n lead_v we_o here_o to_o that_o necessary_a distinction_n between_o the_o law_n &_o the_o gospel_n law_n for_o the_o law_n be_v a_o necessary_a doctrine_n to_o beat_v down_o the_o pride_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o which_o rise_v of_o that_o confidence_n of_o our_o own_o righteousness_n there_o be_v also_o as_o before_o i_o have_v say_v a_o presumption_n in_o riches_n power_n &_o wisdom_n but_o that_o presumption_n may_v be_v cure_v many_o way_n but_o this_o which_o presume_v of_o our_o own_o righteousness_n be_v uncurable_a except_o that_o wane_v come_v whereof_o david_n here_o speak_v by_o the_o mean_n whereof_o our_o conscience_n be_v stir_v up_o through_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n be_v force_v to_o examine_v our_o life_n our_o manner_n &_o conversation_n but_o because_o we_o be_v
