who_o they_o make_v their_o prayer_n the_o original_a word_n be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d which_o as_o some_o interpreter_n note_v do_v proper_o signify_v a_o olive-branch_n wrap_v about_o with_o wool_n which_o supplicant_n hold_v in_o their_o hand_n hence_o we_o may_v easy_o imagine_v in_o what_o anguish_n of_o soul_n christ_n be_v and_o what_o pang_n of_o pain_n he_o feel_v when_o he_o be_v drive_v to_o such_o earnest_a prayer_n and_o devout_a supplication_n but_o what_o prayer_n and_o supplication_n the_o author_n mean_v will_v appear_v from_o the_o word_n follow_v wherein_o the_o person_n to_o who_o he_o pray_v be_v describe_v in_o such_o manner_n that_o thence_o we_o may_v easy_o understand_v what_o he_o pray_v although_o the_o adjunct_n of_o his_o prayer_n do_v will_v preserve_v it_o and_o afterward_o restore_v it_o and_o consequent_o to_o recall_v he_o from_o death_n to_o life_n who_o spirit_n it_o be_v that_o the_o author_n have_v respect_n to_o these_o to_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o legal_a high_a priest_n but_o to_o make_v one_o only_a offering_n as_o appear_v in_o the_o former_a chapter_n verse_n 25._o for_o to_o this_o point_n as_o to_o his_o main_a scope_n all_o his_o argument_n be_v direct_v the_o high_a priest_n being_n en_fw-fr tere_v into_o the_o holy_a place_n do_v not_o sit_v there_o but_o be_v wont_a to_o stand_v there_o before_o the_o mercy-seat_n as_o before_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n and_o he_o stand_v there_o daily_o which_o must_v not_o be_v so_o understand_v that_o he_o do_v so_o every_o day_n in_o the_o year_n but_o upon_o a_o set_n and_o certain_a day_n of_o the_o year_n which_o have_v it_o circuit_n and_o come_v about_o year_n by_o year_n namely_o at_o the_o solemn_a anniversary_n fast_o for_o the_o universal_a expiation_n of_o the_o whole_a people_n for_o he_o daily_o offer_v upon_o that_o day_n whensoever_o it_o have_v recourse_n for_o in_o this_o sense_n he_o use_v the_o same_o word_n before_o chap._n 7.27_o where_o he_o open_o speak_v of_o that_o solemn_a annual_a sacrifice_n upon_o the_o day_n of_o expiation_n whereto_o he_o have_v reference_n in_o this_o place_n also_o as_o particular_o appear_v from_o the_o three_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n where_o he_o mention_n the_o commemoration_n of_o sin_n every_o year_n which_o be_v constant_o confess_v by_o the_o whole_a people_n at_o that_o sacrifice_n which_o can_v never_o take_v away_o sin_n the_o cause_n be_v here_o show_v why_o the_o legal_a high_a priest_n must_v offer_v those_o sacrifice_n often_o namely_o because_o they_o can_v christ_n sit_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o sit_v there_o for_o ever_o to_o the_o world_n end_n therefore_o he_o shall_v never_o offer_v sacrifice_n more_o for_o how_o can_v it_o beseem_v or_o rather_o how_o can_v it_o befall_v so_o great_a a_o majesty_n to_o offer_v again_o another_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v to_o die_v again_o and_o then_o again_o to_o enter_v into_o heaven_n commonwealth_n or_o at_o last_o lose_v their_o life_n by_o the_o same_o or_o the_o like_a punishment_n under_o which_o christ_n their_o head_n and_o captain_n suffer_v and_o this_o he_o therefore_o infer_v because_o the_o hatred_n of_o the_o jew_n against_o the_o christian_n contain_v not_o itself_o with_o prohibit_v they_o from_o their_o ceremony_n sacrifice_n and_o temple_n but_o proceed_v martyr_n 14._o for_o here_o have_v we_o no_o continue_v city_n he_n annex_v a_o new_a reason_n why_o we_o shall_v go_v forth_o without_o our_o camp_n that_o be_v bear_v it_o patient_o to_o be_v eject_v and_o exile_v out_o of_o our_o country_n or_o city_n because_o here_o upon_o earth_n we_o have_v no_o continue_a city_n i._n none_o that_o be_v durable_a which_o can_v be_v take_v from_o we_o nor_o we_o from_o it_o all_o the_o city_n which_o we_o inhabit_v upon_o earth_n we_o inhabit_v only_o for_o a_o time_n why_o therefore_o shall_v we_o refuse_v for_o christ_n sake_n to_o lose_v that_o city_n which_o otherwise_o we_o must_v whole_o lose_v in_o a_o very_a short_a space_n or_o else_o the_o author_n teach_v we_o that_o we_o christian_n as_o we_o be_v christian_n enjoy_v no_o city_n upon_o earth_n by_o any_o firm_a and_o proper_a possession_n but_o in_o this_o respect_n we_o be_v always_o subject_a to_o expulsion_n banishment_n and_o such_o like_a misery_n the_o author_n therefore_o may_v with_o good_a reason_n use_v this_o admonition_n to_o teach_v christian_n what_o be_v their_o state_n and_o condition_n upon_o earth_n especial_o the_o hebrew_n who_o may_v imagine_v because_o they_o proceed_v from_o the_o stock_n of_o abraham_n therefore_o they_o have_v full_a right_n to_o enjoy_v the_o freedom_n of_o the_o city_n jerusalem_n no_o less_o than_o other_o of_o call_v this_o city_n to_o come_v because_o to_o we_o it_o be_v to_o come_v but_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o the_o angel_n it_o be_v already_o present_a the_o word_n we_o seek_v although_o it_o signify_v the_o effect_n itself_o yet_o it_o must_v not_o here_o be_v take_v so_o much_o for_o the_o effect_n as_o for_o the_o efficacy_n of_o christian_a religion_n and_o our_o duty_n therein_o for_o than_o we_o seek_v when_o we_o follow_v the_o power_n and_o guidance_n of_o christian_a religion_n because_o it_o be_v the_o condition_n and_o duty_n of_o christian_n to_o seek_v a_o city_n to_o come_v that_o be_v to_o endeavour_v with_o all_o care_n and_o diligence_n that_o they_o may_v attain_v it_o 15._o by_o he_o therefore_o let_v we_o offer_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o praise_n here_o he_o of_o this_o doctrine_n christ_n in_o a_o comparison_n with_o the_o high_a priest_n be_v say_v to_o sanctify_v the_o people_n with_o his_o blood_n now_o from_o this_o that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n be_v always_o so_o uniform_a as_o to_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o subject_a to_o no_o alteration_n and_o that_o christ_n be_v our_o high_a priest_n who_o have_v sanctify_v his_o whole_a among_o the_o people_n offer_v sacrifice_n to_o god_n by_o the_o priest_n the_o whole_a people_n by_o the_o high_a priest_n only_o but_o private_a person_n by_o priest_n of_o a_o inferior_a order_n all_o which_o together_o with_o the_o high_a priest_n as_o other_o be_v to_o offer_v sacrifice_n by_o they_o be_v correspondent_a to_o christ_n alone_o for_o in_o this_o respect_n christ_n alone_o be_v as_o much_o as_o all_o they_o together_o for_o although_o in_o the_o christian_a religion_n beside_o christ_n our_o high_a priest_n there_o be_v other_o priest_n namely_o all_o christian_n yet_o compare_v to_o christ_n they_o must_v be_v account_v for_o the_o common_a people_n and_o to_o offer_v sacrifice_n by_o christ_n be_v to_o offer_v such_o sacrifice_n as_o be_v consecrate_v and_o prepare_v as_o it_o be_v by_o christ_n himself_o and_o by_o he_o be_v make_v acceptable_a unto_o god_n and_o this_o be_v do_v when_o we_o offer_v they_o as_o the_o worshipper_n and_o servitor_n of_o christ_n by_o faith_n in_o god_n in_o and_o through_o christ_n by_o the_o prescript_n and_o command_n of_o christ_n for_o what_o be_v offer_v in_o this_o manner_n be_v offer_v
the_o ruler_n of_o the_o church_n watch_n for_o our_o soul_n that_o no_o man_n soul_n shall_v perish_v or_o that_o no_o man_n shall_v fail_v of_o that_o true_a and_o eternal_a salvation_n of_o soul_n whence_o it_o appear_v what_o great_a reason_n we_o have_v to_o obey_v our_o ruler_n who_o charge_n and_o care_n belong_v whole_o to_o our_o soul_n and_o who_o command_n and_o admonition_n we_o can_v despise_v with_o no_o less_o danger_n than_o the_o loss_n of_o our_o soul_n as_o they_o that_o must_v give_v account_n now_o on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o show_v a_o reason_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o our_o ruler_n who_o god_n have_v appoint_v over_o we_o why_o they_o must_v use_v all_o diligent_a care_n to_o watch_v for_o our_o soul_n namely_o because_o they_o must_v give_v a_o account_n of_o their_o office_n and_o action_n to_o god_n and_o christ_n who_o have_v commit_v his_o poor_a sheep_n to_o their_o care_n and_o charge_n so_o that_o if_o any_o perish_v through_o their_o default_n or_o negligence_n they_o must_v answer_v for_o it_o under_o a_o grievous_a penalty_n for_o to_o this_o purpose_n tend_v those_o word_n of_o god_n in_o ezekiel_n so_o thou_o o_o son_n of_o man_n i_o have_v set_v thou_o a_o watchman_n unto_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n therefore_o thou_o shall_v hear_v the_o word_n at_o my_o mouth_n and_o warn_v they_o from_o i_o when_o i_o say_v unto_o the_o wicked_a o_o wicked_a man_n thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v if_o thou_o do_v not_o speak_v to_o warn_v the_o wicked_a from_o his_o way_n that_o wicked_a man_n shall_v die_v in_o his_o iniquity_n but_o his_o fancy_n that_o they_o may_v do_v it_o with_o joy_n and_o not_o with_o grief_n he_o yet_o press_v our_o obedience_n with_o a_o further_a reason_n namely_o that_o our_o ruler_n may_v reap_v some_o spiritual_a fruit_n of_o their_o office_n and_o perform_v it_o with_o joy_n and_o not_o with_o grief_n for_o certain_o this_o their_o office_n so_o dangerous_a to_o themselves_o and_o so_o commodious_a to_o we_o do_v deserve_v this_o respect_n at_o our_o hand_n that_o in_o the_o function_n of_o their_o office_n we_o shall_v so_o carry_v ourselves_o as_o to_o be_v a_o comfort_n and_o write_v this_o same_o unto_o you_o lest_o when_o i_o come_v i_o shall_v have_v sorrow_n from_o they_o of_o who_o i_o ought_v to_o rejoice_v and_o again_o in_o the_o same_o epistle_n chap._n 12.21_o i_o fear_v lest_o when_o i_o come_v again_o my_o god_n will_v humble_v i_o among_o you_o &_o that_o i_o shall_v bewail_v many_o which_o have_v sin_v already_o and_o have_v not_o repent_v for_o that_o precept_n or_o request_n unto_o the_o hebrew_n but_o he_o speak_v only_o of_o himself_o in_o the_o plural_a number_n as_o it_o appear_v in_o the_o verse_n follow_v wherein_o express_v what_o they_o shall_v pray_v for_o he_o mention_n a_o thing_n concern_v himself_o only_a for_o we_o trust_v we_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n he_o subjoin_v the_o ground_n or_o cause_n of_o his_o request_n namely_o because_o he_o be_v not_o a_o person_n altogether_o unworthy_a to_o obtain_v this_o good_a office_n from_o they_o but_o he_o speak_v very_o modest_o and_o prudent_o of_o himself_o that_o he_o persuade_v ourselves_o which_o can_v not_o but_o be_v improper_o speak_v see_v to_o speak_v proper_o a_o good_a conscience_n consist_v in_o the_o persuasion_n of_o itself_o therefore_o a_o good_a conscience_n be_v in_o this_o place_n take_v for_o the_o cause_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n that_o be_v for_o a_o life_n unblameable_a or_o void_a of_o all_o offence_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v i_o trust_v and_o be_o persuade_v that_o i_o so_o live_v and_o so_o carry_v myself_o that_o my_o conscience_n may_v well_o be_v at_o rest_n with_o my_o action_n second_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o plural_a number_n and_o by_o way_n of_o communication_n do_v mingle_v himself_o in_o a_o manner_n with_o the_o multitude_n seem_v also_o to_o testify_v no_o more_o of_o himself_o then_o of_o they_o in_o all_o thing_n willing_a to_o live_v honest_o he_o show_v the_o reason_n of_o his_o confidence_n why_o he_o trust_v that_o he_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n namely_o because_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o live_v honest_o in_o all_o thing_n he_o say_v not_o that_o actual_o he_o do_v live_v honest_o in_o all_o thing_n but_o affective_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o live_v so_o which_o be_v much_o more_o modest_a but_o his_o willingness_n herein_o must_v not_o be_v take_v for_o the_o sole_a purpose_n and_o intention_n of_o his_o mind_n but_o of_o his_o study_n endeavour_n and_o labour_n or_o of_o a_o will_v continual_o actual_a and_o effectual_a for_o so_o saint_n paul_n testify_v of_o himself_o act_n 24.16_o and_o herein_o do_v i_o exercise_v myself_o to_o have_v always_o a_o good_a
