Februarie the Emperour Charles the fift was borne in the towne of Gaunt in Flaunders and in the same yere about the beginning of Sommer in Germany and Luke-land there sell Crosses of â—iâ—ers colours â—uâ— of the 〈◊〉 vpoÌ„ 〈◊〉 câ—â—theâ— year 1502 This yeare there was so great a death in Germany that the common speech among them was that all those on whom the bloody Crosses fell the yeare before should die at the same time there fell such a Haile by Vitupord in Brabrant as the like was neuer seene for the haile stones were as big as any Tennis ball year 1503 This yeare about the last of Iulie in the afternoone all the Towne of Herderwicke was burnt in the space of three houres so that there remained but three or foure houses by the which fire there were smothered aboue 1500 men and al that was within the houses kurnt The same yeare there were 200. houses burnt in Gorcum and at Belle in Flaunders 500 houses year 1504 This yeare died Isabell Queene of Spaine year 1506 About the beginning of Ianuarie preparation was made to bring king Phillip and his wife into Spaine The same yeare when king Phillip was gone into Spaine the Gelders began againe to war vppon Holland and Brabrant The same yeare about the 27. of September died Phillip King of Spaine and Granado presently after his Coronation year 1507 The Towne of Tienen was taken by those of Gelder with the aide of certaine Frenchmen which was done vpon Saint Michaels day and Turnholt spoyled year 1508 The 8. of September there arriued two ships at Teruere in Zealand that came fro the Canaries being the first ships that euer sailed out of Zealand into Spaine or the Islands they were laden with Canarie Sugars the ships went to Antwarpe there offered the Suger to be sold for two blankes a pound but they could not sell it for so much The same yeare the Prince Charles with the Emperour Maximilian his Grandfather made his entrye into Gaunt year 1509 On the xiiij of October there was an Earthquake in the Cittie of Constantinople that continued for the space of 18 dayes so that the walles of the Citie and all the houses vpon the Sea side fell downe and the sea rose so high that it flowed ouer the walles of the Towne and drowned aboue 14000. men year 1510 There happened wars betweene Hans King of Denmarke and the Townes of Holland zealand Frezeland against certaine Townes lying vppon the sea as Lubecke Rostocke and their adherents which continued for the space of two yeares year 1511 The Emperour Maximilian held a Parliament of the states of Germanie at Ausberg where there was 〈◊〉 maÌ„ brought before him that was so great that he eate a whole Calfe and a Sheepe raw at one meale and yet was not suffized year 1512 There was such a Frost for the space of nine weekes that in many places men King of Spaine The same yere in the month of February Francis de Valois King of France bought the towne of Tourney of Henry king of England for a great summe of money The same yeare wheate was sold for 12. stiuers and Rie for 9. stiuers the quarter year 1520 This yeare vpon the 23. of October Charles King of Spaine was elected Emperour and at Acen in Germanie hee receaued the Imperiall Crowne with great triumph The same yeare in the moneth of October there was three hundred houses burnt in Romerswald year 1521 The Emperour Charles in presence of the King of Denmarke laide the first stone of the foundation of the new quier of our Ladies church in Andwerpe and spread the morter with a trowell The same yeare vppon the 19. of Nouember there was 70. parishes in Holland ouerflowne and drowned by force of the water that entred into the land and in the same moneth the Towne of Turney was besieged by the Emperour and vpon Saint Andrewes day it was taken since which time it hath bin holden vnder the king of Spaines subiection year 1522 The Island of Rodes was wonne by the Turke and while it was besieged there rose a muteny in Andwarpe the people saying that the bakers were the cause of the dearth of corne which as then was verye deare the like did the women of Machelen and Brussels against their Bakers The same yeare in the moneth of Aprill by Egmont in Holland there was a In Paris victuals were so deare that it was compared to the destruction of Ierusalem for a townesman therein constrained by hunger hung his wife and children which done he set a bill vpon his own breast wherin he wrote the cause of that action then hanged himselfe for at that time within the towne they eate Horses Asses Dogges Cats Rats Vine leaues a pound of butter was solde for two Crownes and an Egge for twelue solx and great numbers died for hunger The same yeare vppon the twenty sixe of May Sutphen was besieged and deliuered into the handes of Graue Maurice The thirty one of May Deuenter was besieged and after it had receaued 3700 shotte against it they yeelded it vnto the States The twentie eight of Iune Graue Maurice went before Delffile with three and thirtie great peeces and the second of Iuly it was yeelded vnto him The fift of Iuly hee came before the Sconce of Opslach and with 160. shot battered it which was yeelded to the States Vpon the seauenth of Iuly the seuenteene of August the Cardinal tooke Hulst in Flanders by composition after he had lost 6000. of his best souldiers before the towne This yeare vppon the twentie foure of Ianuarie year 1597 Graue Maurice with sixe thousand men met the enemy at Tuelsheheyde by Turenhoult where he set vppon them being a great number who beeing aduertised of his comming fled away whome he followed and hauing ouertaken them he slew of them to the number of two thousand men among the which their Generall the Earle of Ferrara was one The eleauenth of March the towne of Amyens in France was by treason and beere vppon the riuer before Andwarpe This yeare vppon the fift of Aprill year 1566 the Nobilitie and Gentlemen of the Low Countries presented a petition to the Dutchesse of Parma requesting the moderation of all placarts published touching Religion Vpon the fourth of Iuly Religion began openly to bee preached in the Low Countries The same yeare vpon the twentie of August Images in Andwarpe and other places were throwne downe This yeare those of the Religion year 1567 stoode armed vppon the Marebrug and the Papists at the bruge foot one readie to set vpon the other but by the Prince of Oranges means they were pacified The one and twentie of Aprill the Prince of Orange hauing had intelligence what was determined in Spaine touching the Low countries and hauing aduertised the Earle of Egmont thereof hee went into Germanie The twenty two of August the Duke D'Alua with great triumph althogh vnworthie was receiued into Brussels The same yeare vpon the ninth of September the Earles of Fgmont Horne were committed to prison by the Duke of Alua and kept in the Castle of Gaunt The seauenteenth of October the Castle of Andwarpe was begun to be made The last of December the Dutchesse of Parma departed out of the Low Countries and presently after the Duke of Alua imprisoned diuers of the people that were of the Religion and such as had borne armes This yeare in Easter Holidaies the Earle Lodwicke tooke the house of Weden in Freeseland and Dam in the which enterprise the Earle of Arenberch and diuers Spaniards were ouerthrowne The first of Iulie the Duke of Alua caused the two Lordes of Batenborch and sixteene gentlemen more to be beheaded The second of Iuly the Duke of Alua sent his forces into Freesland against the Earle Lodwicke that stayed for him but because the Dutch Souldiers would not fight he was forced to saue himselfe and swam through the riuer of Embdze The fift of Iulie the Duke of Alua caused the Earles of Egmont Horne to be beheaded in the towne of Brussels The tenth of September the Earle of Bueren was taken in Louen conueied into Spaine In the moneth of October the Prince of Orange passed the Riuer of the Mase at Stochem with certaine Dutch forces but the Dutchmen when they should fight asking for mony were the cause that hee could not fight with the enemie whervppon he went into France to ayde the Hugonots This yeare vpon the thirteenth of march year 1569 the Prince of Conde being taken prisoner was trayterouslie shot into the body by Montesquion This yeare vpon the sixteenth of Iuly year 1570 the Duk of Alua published a generall pardon within the towne of Andwarpe The twentie fiue of September Anna of Austria took shipping in Zealand to sayle into Spaine This moneth Ladron gouernour of Valencia was by his Souldiers committed Prisoner because they would haue the pay of nyne companies of souldiers the mony where of he had played at dice which he promised them to satisfie and to the same end he gotte diuers of them to Andwarpe where he committed and executed at least two forty of the principall mutiners This yere Harmon Ruyter tooke the Castle of Loeuestein year 1571 which the Spaniardes not long after tooke from him againe and hanged both him all his companie In the moneth of December the mony that the Duke of Alua should haue receaued out of Spaine was taken by the Queene of Englands ships and carrried into England This yeare in the moneth of Februarie year 1572 the Duke of Alua sought to haue a tribute of the tenth penny but he could not obtaine it The first of Aprill the Brill was taken by Lumine and not long after Flushing and Enchuysen yeelded to the Prince of Orange against the Duke of Alua.
