lord_n open_z to_o we_o that_o will_v help_v you_o or_o reverse_v your_o doom_n heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v soon_o perish_v the_o sun_n shall_v soon_o fall_v from_o his_o orb_n and_o all_o the_o friend_n a_o patron_n and_o defender_n and_o this_o be_v of_o the_o very_a essence_n of_o our_o religion_n but_o if_o by_o liberty_n be_v understand_v licentiousness_n and_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v a_o modest_a virgin_n be_v draw_v and_o represent_v in_o the_o loose_a habit_n of_o a_o strumpet_n and_o man_n fancy_v they_o be_v and_o can_v be_v free_a except_o they_o have_v elbow-room_n in_o sin_n and_o may_v gratify_v their_o sense_n and_o carnal_a desire_n as_o they_o please_v if_o this_o be_v the_o notion_n of_o liberty_n christianity_n be_v a_o profess_a enemy_n to_o it_o and_o declare_v a_o eternal_a war_n against_o it_o it_o be_v a_o very_a wilful_a and_o notorious_a mistake_n to_o think_v christ_n come_v to_o free_v we_o from_o obedience_n or_o that_o he_o descend_v from_o heaven_n to_o loose_v we_o from_o the_o bond_n of_o our_o duty_n so_o far_o from_o it_o that_o he_o come_v to_o require_v it_o upon_o great_a motive_n and_o enjoin_v it_o with_o great_a sanction_n press_v observance_n not_o only_o of_o the_o great_a but_o lesser_a command_n and_o in_o case_n of_o failure_n declare_v that_o we_o shall_v find_v we_o have_v a_o god_n to_o deal_v with_o who_o will_v not_o be_v mock_v for_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o text_n whosoever_o therefore_o shall_v break_v one_o of_o these_o least_o commandment_n and_o shall_v teach_v man_n so_o he_o shall_v be_v call_v the_o least_o etc._n etc._n to_o give_v you_o the_o sense_n of_o these_o word_n 1._o by_o the_o commandment_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v mean_v the_o command_n and_o precept_n deliver_v and_o lay_v down_o by_o christ_n in_o this_o sermon_n on_o the_o mount_n both_o those_o that_o go_v before_o the_o text_n and_o those_o that_o follow_v after_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v they_o be_v concern_v in_o they_o 2._o they_o be_v call_v little_a commandment_n and_o the_o least_o not_o that_o any_o command_n of_o god_n in_o scripture_n be_v so_o in_o itself_o or_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o a_o trifle_n but_o because_o they_o be_v so_o in_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o the_o people_n of_o that_o age_n who_o either_o call_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n the_o great_a and_o those_o of_o the_o moral_a the_o least_o or_o if_o they_o allow_v the_o title_n of_o great_a command_n to_o any_o part_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n it_o be_v to_o such_o command_n as_o forbid_v the_o more_o scandalous_a and_o barbarous_a sin_n i_o e._n thou_o shall_v do_v no_o murder_n this_o they_o call_v a_o great_a commandment_n but_o thou_o shall_v not_o be_v angry_a with_o thy_o brother_n without_o cause_n nor_o revile_v he_o nor_o abuse_v he_o nor_o give_v he_o ill_a name_n and_o opprobrious_a language_n etc._n etc._n these_o they_o call_v little_a and_o the_o least_o command_n counsel_n rather_o than_o command_v the_o omission_n of_o which_o they_o think_v will_v be_v no_o way_n prejudicial_a to_o the_o eternal_a welfare_n of_o their_o soul_n 3._o to_o break_v these_o little_a or_o least_o commandment_n and_o to_o teach_v man_n so_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o pharisee_n who_o not_o only_o neglect_v these_o command_n of_o god_n themselves_o but_o teach_v other_o too_o not_o to_o discompose_v themselves_o about_o the_o neglect_n of_o they_o as_o long_o as_o they_o keep_v close_o to_o the_o big_a command_n such_o as_o sacrifice_v circumcision_n frequent_v the_o passover_n put_v on_o their_o phylactery_n etc._n etc._n or_o such_o as_o enjoin_v forbearance_n of_o the_o overt_a act_n of_o some_o notorious_a sin_n adultery_n fornication_n perjury_n steal_v etc._n etc._n and_o to_o break_v these_o commandment_n be_v to_o slight_v they_o to_o disregard_n they_o to_o act_v contrary_a to_o they_o and_o wilful_o to_o do_v what_o they_o forbid_v or_o wilful_o to_o omit_v what_o they_o do_v enjoin_v 4._o to_o be_v call_v or_o to_o be_v the_o least_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n though_o this_o phrase_n matth._n xi_o 11_o be_v use_v to_o describe_v a_o person_n that_o be_v a_o infant_n a_o babe_n a_o novice_n a_o young_a beginner_n in_o christ_n religion_n who_o be_v sensible_a and_o know_v indeed_o that_o christ_n kingdom_n be_v a_o spiritual_a kingdom_n but_o know_v it_o in_o a_o very_a low_a degree_n and_o be_v therefore_o say_v to_o be_v great_a in_o some_o respect_n than_o st._n john_n the_o baptist_n who_o from_o the_o vulgar_a error_n of_o his_o country_n seem_v to_o cherish_v some_o relic_n of_o that_o opinion_n that_o the_o messiah_n be_v to_o appear_v with_o external_n pomp_n and_o mark_n of_o authority_n but_o though_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o phrase_n there_o yet_o what_o be_v a_o comparison_n in_o that_o place_n be_v a_o threaten_v here_o and_o therefore_o require_v another_o sense_n and_o it_o be_v speak_v with_o allusion_n to_o break_v these_o least_o commandment_n and_o by_o way_n of_o retaliation_n that_o as_o they_o sin_v in_o that_o which_o be_v the_o least_o so_o they_o shall_v be_v reward_v with_o be_v the_o least_o in_o the_o last_o day_n it_o must_v necessary_o be_v as_o much_o as_o be_v exclude_v from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n whether_o by_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n we_o understand_v the_o kingdom_n of_o grace_n or_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n and_o though_o the_o church_n be_v sometime_o call_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n as_o matth._n xiii_o yet_o even_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o threaten_v will_v appear_v to_o be_v dismal_a enough_o for_o the_o meaning_n will_v be_v that_o such_o a_o one_o as_o break_v these_o least_o commandment_n will_v be_v can_v be_v no_o true_a no_o live_a member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o if_o so_o he_o can_v be_v no_o heir_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o st._n chrysostom_n render_v the_o word_n least_o by_o no_o body_n or_o nothing_o i._n e._n he_o shall_v be_v nothing_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o will_v be_v a_o very_a despicable_a contemptible_a creature_n when_o christ_n shall_v come_v in_o glory_n 5._o and_o from_o hence_o it_o will_v be_v easy_a to_o guess_v what_o must_v be_v the_o import_n of_o the_o promise_n that_o be_v add_v here_o but_o whosoever_o shall_v do_v and_o teach_v
complain_v of_o wrong_n be_v no_o just_a offence_n give_v since_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o scripture_n do_v not_o absolute_o forbid_v it_o and_o the_o common_a good_a which_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n have_v respect_n to_o sometime_o require_v it_o so_o that_o if_o a_o person_n vicious_a and_o brutish_a and_o covetous_a and_o illnatured_a base_a and_o selfish_a who_o be_v able_a to_o pay_v and_o will_v not_o and_o deal_v fraudulent_o and_o deceitful_o be_v cast_v into_o prison_n it_o be_v no_o breach_n of_o charity_n provide_v still_o that_o it_o be_v not_o anger_n or_o malice_n or_o revenge_n or_o delight_n in_o man_n misery_n or_o some_o other_o base_a sinister_a end_n and_o design_n that_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o take_v this_o rough_a way_n but_o love_n to_o justice_n intent_n to_o reform_v the_o offender_n by_o affliction_n and_o care_v to_o prevent_v his_o continuance_n in_o sin_n and_o do_v hurt_v to_o other_o etc._n etc._n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o breach_n of_o charity_n there_o need_v no_o reconciliation_n it_o be_v grant_v the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n allow_v you_o to_o arrest_v any_o man_n that_o be_v indebt_v to_o you_o whether_o he_o be_v able_a to_o pay_v or_o not_o but_o may_v it_o not_o be_v say_v in_o this_o case_n as_o christ_n to_o the_o pharisee_n in_o the_o law_n of_o divorce_n for_o the_o hardness_n of_o your_o heart_n the_o law_n permit_v it_o but_o still_o it_o do_v not_o hinder_v you_o from_o show_v mercy_n the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n contradict_v not_o the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n nor_o be_v it_o ever_o intend_a to_o draw_v man_n off_o from_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o to_o their_o neighbour_n and_o since_o charity_n be_v the_o great_a gospel_n duty_n we_o must_v think_v ourselves_o oblige_v more_o by_o what_o the_o gospel_n command_v than_o by_o what_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n permit_v and_o though_o it_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o charity_n to_o punish_v malefactor_n yet_o every_o debtor_n come_v not_o into_o this_o number_n nor_o must_v those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v a_o affliction_n not_o to_o be_v in_o a_o condition_n to_o satisfy_v their_o creditor_n be_v confound_v with_o the_o wicked_a what_o be_v say_v of_o a_o adversary_n among_o man_n be_v refer_v to_o god_n as_o such_o a_o person_n deal_v with_o a_o perfidious_a debtor_n here_o on_o earth_n so_o god_n will_v deal_v with_o the_o uncharitable_a and_o person_n who_o will_v not_o be_v reconcile_v to_o their_o offend_a brethren_n till_o affliction_n and_o trouble_n come_v very_o few_o people_n will_v believe_v that_o god_n be_v their_o adversary_n indeed_o when_o a_o great_a loss_n befall_v they_o or_o some_o painful_a disease_n seize_v upon_o they_o or_o a_o distemper_n that_o very_o much_o discompose_v and_o disturb_v their_o mind_n hang_v about_o they_o or_o some_o other_o disaster_n unforeseen_a and_o unlooked_a for_o happen_v than_o god_n from_o who_o the_o affliction_n come_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o adversary_n and_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o believe_v he_o be_v angry_a with_o they_o but_o while_o prosperity_n last_v and_o that_o sun_n continue_v to_o shine_v upon_o they_o and_o ease_n and_o plenty_n be_v their_o companion_n and_o like_o officious_a servant_n wait_v upon_o they_o then_o god_n be_v a_o friend_n and_o they_o will_v have_v he_o to_o be_v so_o sometime_o whether_o he_o will_v or_o not_o but_o as_o god_n favour_n and_o hatred_n be_v not_o to_o be_v measure_v by_o outward_a accident_n not_o by_o outward_a want_n or_o plenty_n so_o it_o be_v certain_a it_o may_v infallible_o be_v know_v whether_o god_n be_v our_o friend_n or_o adversary_n by_o our_o obedience_n or_o disobedience_n to_o his_o holy_a command_n let_v our_o outward_a condition_n be_v what_o it_o will_n so_o that_o if_o you_o live_v in_o disobedience_n to_o his_o express_a and_o peremptory_a command_n it_o be_v a_o never-failing_a sign_n that_o god_n be_v your_o adversary_n though_o you_o wash_v your_o foot_n in_o butter_n and_o the_o rock_n pour_v you_o out_o river_n of_o oil_n though_o your_o ox_n be_v strong_a to_o labour_v and_o your_o sheep_n bring_v forth_o thousand_o and_o ten_o thousand_o in_o from_o the_o example_n of_o holy_a man_n or_o from_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v prevail_v with_o you_o to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o your_o brethren_n with_o who_o you_o be_v fall_v out_o it_o be_v as_o sure_a as_o any_o oracle_n in_o the_o bible_n that_o god_n be_v your_o adversary_n perhaps_o such_o a_o adversary_n you_o like_v very_o well_o that_o crown_v you_o with_o temporal_a blessing_n and_o let_v you_o enjoy_v what_o your_o flesh_n desire_v and_o fill_v your_o belly_n with_o hide_a treasure_n these_o be_v the_o thing_n you_o be_v fond_a of_o and_o you_o desire_v to_o be_v punish_v with_o such_o outward_a conveniency_n and_o accommodation_n and_o indeed_o if_o this_o life_n be_v all_o you_o have_v to_o look_v after_o the_o argumentation_n or_o inference_n will_v not_o be_v amiss_o but_o do_v not_o dives_n live_v as_o calm_o and_o as_o plentiful_o as_o you_o can_v do_v and_o yet_o when_o his_o body_n drop_v from_o he_o and_o be_v bury_v the_o man_n the_o unhappy_a man_n feel_v what_o it_o be_v to_o have_v god_n for_o his_o adversary_n the_o very_a plenty_n he_o former_o enjoy_v become_v now_o a_o ingredient_n of_o his_o bitter_a potion_n and_o he_o etc._n though_o all_o these_o be_v crime_n which_o shall_v not_o be_v so_o much_o as_o name_v among_o christian_n yet_o since_o christ_n have_v except_v no_o case_n but_o that_o of_o adultery_n or_o fornication_n that_o christian_a walk_n most_o safe_o that_o keep_v to_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o text._n i_o grant_v there_o may_v be_v other_o cause_n which_o may_v justify_v a_o man_n and_o his_o
