good_a or_o bad_a in_o other_o and_o consequent_o dispose_v himself_o and_o other_o to_o a_o imitation_n of_o the_o one_o and_o a_o eschew_v of_o the_o other_o especial_o if_o he_o be_v a_o person_n of_o some_o esteem_n and_o yet_o he_o may_v do_v the_o first_o out_o of_o fear_n or_o flattery_n or_o because_o it_o be_v like_o somewhat_o in_o himself_o not_o because_o it_o be_v a_o quality_n or_o iu._n four_o nor_o in_o the_o next_o place_n be_v it_o prohibit_v universal_o to_o pass_v judgement_n on_o the_o worst_a side_n to_o accuse_v or_o condemn_v for_o it_o be_v permit_v to_o the_o overseer_n of_o other_o manner_n and_o instructor_n and_o teacher_n of_o good_a manner_n and_o to_o friend_n who_o care_n and_o industry_n for_o the_o good_a of_o those_o who_o they_o thus_o judge_v extraordinary_a forward_o not_o out_o of_o some_o sense_n of_o duty_n to_o give_v counsel_n advice_n or_o judgement_n of_o other_o man_n concern_v be_v very_o negligent_a and_o careless_a and_o unapt_a to_o follow_v the_o very_a same_o when_o it_o be_v as_o useful_a and_o profitable_a for_o themselves_o sect._n v._n second_o for_o some_o of_o the_o cause_n of_o too_o great_a a_o proneness_n to_o judge_n on_o the_o worst_a side_n whether_o true_o or_o false_o but_o not_o therefore_o or_o because_o they_o be_v true_a or_o false_a in_o ourselves_o they_o be_v all_o either_o ignorance_n or_o some_o ill-disposition_n of_o will._n 1._o ignorance_n viz._n of_o the_o bad_a effect_n or_o consequence_n of_o this_o our_o too_o great_a proneness_n which_o ignorance_n may_v proceed_v from_o ill-disposition_n of_o will_n either_o on_o set_a purpose_n or_o design_v then_o when_o we_o judge_v and_o we_o wilful_o shut_v our_o eye_n and_o do_v not_o attend_v to_o what_o may_v better_o inform_v we_o or_o it_o may_v be_v contract_v before_o but_o it_o may_v proceed_v too_o sometime_o even_o from_o love_n and_o charity_n so_o we_o see_v sometime_o person_n much_o desirous_a of_o their_o relation_n or_o other_o good_a and_o welfare_n very_o apt_a always_o to_o suspect_v the_o worse_a of_o they_o and_o to_o observe_v their_o beginning_n bad_a inclination_n and_o to_o think_v they_o so_o but_o not_o so_o much_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o contrary_a good_a one_o in_o they_o and_o this_o partly_o that_o they_o may_v timely_o prevent_v any_o evil_n that_o may_v happen_v to_o they_o thereby_o and_o so_o may_v it_o be_v in_o public_a affair_n and_o of_o very_o great_a and_o universal_a concernment_n especial_o and_o yet_o soon_o out_o of_o our_o power_n nay_o so_o we_o see_v it_o in_o ourselves_o sometime_o some_o man_n be_v too_o apt_a to_o look_v upon_o their_o fault_n and_o imperfection_n and_o to_o magnify_v they_o and_o to_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o what_o those_o of_o the_o two_o former_a particular_n the_o cause_n of_o rash_a judgement_n in_o general_n idleness_n busibodiness_n activity_n curiosity_n pride_n and_o of_o rash_a censure_n or_o judgement_n without_o reason_n but_o a_o man_n be_v own_o will_n on_o the_o worst_a side_n as_o such_o be_v among_o other_o hatred_n revenge_n pride_n affectation_n of_o superiority_n envy_n contempt_n flattery_n to_o which_o we_o may_v add_v anger_n and_o wrath_n which_o if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o very_o careful_a dispose_v we_o to_o as_o much_o uncharitable_a and_o unreasonable_a judge_v as_o the_o former_a and_o a_o man_n be_v seldom_o or_o never_o to_o trust_v his_o judgement_n of_o any_o person_n after_o that_o fierce_a and_o confound_a passion_n but_o refer_v it_o to_o another_o time_n when_o calmness_n and_o freedom_n from_o passion_n give_v he_o more_o ability_n to_o see_v the_o truth_n and_o more_o impartiality_n to_o judge_n and_o now_o all_o these_o cause_n methinks_v be_v so_o unreasonable_a inhuman_a and_o unchristian_a when_o thus_o naked_o represent_v that_o they_o can_v but_o stir_v up_o in_o soul_n not_o quite_o degenerate_a or_o corrupt_v dead_a and_o of_o judgement_n concern_v person_n whether_o on_o the_o good_a or_o bad_a side_n may_v as_o in_o all_o other_o false_a judgement_n be_v reduce_v to_o two_o within_o we_o in_o general_n 1._o defect_n in_o our_o understanding_n which_o here_o in_o this_o case_n be_v but_o one_o viz._n ignorance_n in_o a_o large_a sense_n viz._n the_o absence_n or_o want_v of_o apprehension_n or_o of_o the_o actual_a knowledge_n of_o something_o which_o will_v influence_n our_o judgement_n 2._o in_o our_o will_n a_o mere_a inclination_n to_o any_o certain_a false_a judgement_n whether_o it_o be_v from_o custom_n and_o use_v or_o from_o the_o love_n and_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o any_o certain_a object_n in_o this_o particular_a case_n of_o false_a judgement_n some_o of_o the_o most_o frequent_a cause_n more_o or_o less_o remote_o and_o some_o way_n or_o other_o reducible_a to_o these_o two_o be_v these_o sect._n ix_o 1._o in_o general_n mere_a ignorance_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o thing_n where_o there_o be_v no_o defect_n of_o will._n so_o a_o man_n may_v judge_v a_o action_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o effect_n and_o principle_n of_o it_o to_o be_v well_o or_o ill_o do_v when_o it_o be_v the_o contrary_a and_o it_o be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o jewish_a and_o gentile_a christian_n pass_v judgement_n of_o one_o another_o eat_v and_o abstain_v from_o certain_a meat_n and_o observe_v or_o not_o observe_v some_o certain_a day_n and_o time_n and_o consequent_o impose_v they_o upon_o one_o another_o from_o their_o own_o private_a opinion_n not_o as_o determine_v by_o their_o different_a and_o distant_a and_o it_o be_v every_o where_o by_o experience_n see_v that_o those_o who_o little_a take_v notice_n of_o what_o other_o be_v and_o do_v be_v usual_o more_o attentive_a to_o their_o own_o business_n and_o what_o immediate_o belong_v to_o themselves_o the_o time_n that_o be_v spend_v in_o reflection_n upon_o other_o action_n and_o principle_n will_v otherwise_o mostwhat_a if_o we_o be_v not_o very_o dull_a for_o want_v of_o variety_n have_v be_v convert_v to_o the_o observation_n of_o our_o own_o such_o shameful_o neglect_v ofttimes_o to_o purpose_n or_o of_o their_o purpose_a action_n that_o they_o even_o forget_v to_o do_v what_o they_o themselves_o have_v purpose_v and_o design_v because_o they_o be_v busy_a and_o employ_v in_o gaze_v at_o other_o wisdom_n be_v before_o he_o that_o have_v understanding_n but_o the_o eye_n of_o a_o fool_n be_v in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o earth_n prov._n 17.24_o the_o sense_n may_v be_v that_o a_o man_n of_o understand_a regard_n and_o look_n at_o more_o often_o his_o own_o wisdom_n to_o see_v where_o he_o act_v wise_o out_o of_o foresight_n of_o and_o in_o order_n to_o good_a end_n but_o a_o fool_n be_v think_v be_v rove_a and_o employ_v about_o thing_n far_o from_o he_o the_o most_o remote_a and_o impertinent_a that_o be_v of_o person_n and_o action_n among_o other_o which_o he_o can_v little_o make_v use_n of_o in_o comparison_n as_o the_o man_n that_o look_v at_o his_o own_o next_o step_n employ_v himself_o general_o to_o better_a purpose_n than_o he_o that_o gaze_v at_o the_o horizon_n or_o bound_n of_o the_o heaven_n now_o the_o further_a ill_a consequence_n of_o thus_o do_v be_v this_o that_o we_o transfer_v our_o observation_n and_o judgement_n there_o where_o we_o can_v make_v good_a all_o our_o judgement_n concern_v other_o be_v concern_v their_o quality_n or_o action_n and_o of_o their_o action_n sometime_o whether_o they_o have_v be_v at_o all_o sometime_o out_o of_o what_o principle_n sometime_o to_o what_o effect_n or_o good_a purpose_n whether_o they_o shall_v have_v be_v do_v now_o no_o man_n can_v tell_v so_o well_o what_o quality_n be_v in_o another_o man_n as_o what_o be_v in_o himself_o no_o man_n can_v so_o well_o tell_v the_o principle_n of_o another_o man_n action_n his_o end_n intention_n and_o design_n as_o those_o of_o himself_o every_o man_n may_v know_v his_o own_o heart_n better_o than_o another_o mans._n no_o man_n can_v be_v so_o sure_a of_o what_o be_v do_v by_o any_o man_n as_o the_o person_n himself_o and_o last_o it_o be_v but_o rare_a that_o any_o man_n of_o these_o great_a talker_n or_o judger_n know_v the_o circumstance_n of_o any_o man_n condition_n and_o consequent_o what_o can_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v do_v by_o such_o a_o person_n so_o well_o as_o he_o himself_o and_o sure_o he_o do_v or_o may_v unless_o it_o be_v because_o he_o be_v a_o idle_a busybody_n or_o worse_o know_v the_o circumstance_n of_o his_o own_o better_a than_o they_o themselves_o and_o than_o their_o own_o affair_n and_o give_v their_o judgement_n with_o modesty_n and_o out_o of_o friendship_n yet_o how_o frequent_a be_v it_o for_o man_n and_o the_o most_o ignorant_a and_o sottish_a most_o peremptory_o and_o confident_o to_o judge_n what_o other_o who_o be_v true_o wise_a aught_o to_o do_v what_o will_v be_v fit_a and_o of_o best_a effect_n for_o they_o to_o do_v to_o direct_v or_o find_v fault_n where_o it_o be_v apparent_a they_o know_v little_a of_o the_o circumstance_n of_o their_o condition_n or_o affair_n and_o these_o can_v reasonable_o be_v think_v to_o be_v such_o stranger_n to_o their_o own_o business_n and_o affair_n as_o not_o to_o know_v more_o and_o to_o know_v better_a what_o they_o have_v to_o do_v and_o another_o do_v indeed_o such_o a_o bad_a action_n or_o out_o of_o such_o a_o bad_a principle_n or_o have_v
thereto_o and_o that_o be_v one_o viz._n judge_v they_o as_o great_a evil_n as_o we_o can_v it_o be_v like_o a_o man_n dress_v up_o another_o person_n in_o ugly_a or_o contemptible_a habit_n that_o he_o may_v please_v himself_o in_o hate_v or_o contemn_v he_o whereas_o the_o person_n be_v true_a and_o natural_a make_n or_o feature_n be_v more_o beautiful_a and_o comely_a than_o his_o own_o but_o this_o be_v so_o true_o a_o hateful_a disposition_n that_o i_o will_v be_v willing_a rather_o to_o think_v there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n among_o man_n whatever_o there_o may_v be_v among_o the_o infernal_a spirit_n or_o elsewhere_o in_o the_o world_n 2._o though_o in_o the_o second_o place_n revenge_n come_v somewhat_o near_o it_o that_o be_v to_o please_v one_o self_n in_o do_v evil_a to_o another_o man_n mere_o because_o he_o have_v do_v evil_a to_o he_o which_o be_v a_o very_a unreasonable_a thing_n for_o why_o shall_v there_o be_v more_o mischief_n in_o the_o world_n because_o there_o have_v be_v some_o already_o clear_a contrary_n the_o more_o there_o have_v be_v the_o less_o there_o shall_v be_v i_o know_v ofttimes_o there_o be_v a_o mixture_n of_o justice_n and_o self-defence_n to_o prevent_v the_o like_a for_o the_o future_a but_o ofttimes_o too_o there_o be_v more_o pretend_a than_o there_o be_v and_o when_o there_o be_v a_o love_n to_o justice_n and_o a_o just_a and_o reasonable_a defence_n it_o be_v a_o cloak_n to_o hide_v much_o of_o the_o other_o too_o or_o a_o pill_n that_o have_v much_o of_o that_o poison_n in_o it_o we_o have_v the_o more_o need_n to_o be_v skilful_a and_o subtle_a in_o the_o discovery_n of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n that_o be_v the_o end_n or_o design_n that_o move_v our_o wi_n now_o it_o be_v here_o likewise_o manifest_a that_o to_o judge_v a_o person_n as_o bad_a and_o as_o imperfect_a as_o we_o can_v will_v augment_v whetten_v and_o sharpen_v our_o revenge_n and_o consequent_o if_o we_o be_v so_o wicked_o dispose_v our_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n too_o and_o as_o before_o he_o that_o will_v the_o end_n will_v the_o mean_n thereto_o when_o he_o see_v it_o be_v so_o in_o revenge_n too_o be_v often_o mix_v the_o affectation_n of_o superiority_n 3._o somewhat_o less_o a_o bad_a cause_n but_o bad_a enough_o too_o be_v pride_n or_o a_o self-pleasing_a ultimate_o in_o the_o instance_n of_o our_o power_n and_o here_o more_o particular_o 1._o self-pleasing_a in_o our_o superiority_n to_o other_o in_o any_o thing_n a_o branch_n of_o pride_n i._n e._n to_o be_v ultimate_o and_o more_o than_o aught_o please_v therewith_o inordinate_o and_o immoderate_o a_o very_a mischievous_a temper_n and_o appetite_n i_o do_v not_o see_v that_o any_o degree_n thereof_o be_v allowable_a or_o that_o it_o do_v any_o good_a more_o than_o the_o gratification_n of_o the_o proud_a person_n to_o affect_v to_o be_v superior_a in_o some_o excellent_a and_o useful_a quality_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n sometime_o of_o a_o man_n excel_v therein_o and_o consequent_o of_o some_o good_a effect_n but_o it_o be_v not_o because_o he_o affect_v superiority_n that_o be_v not_o the_o precise_a cause_n but_o because_o that_o superiority_n happen_v to_o be_v a_o excellent_a thing_n and_o yet_o more_o particular_o 2._o envy_n a_o kind_n of_o this_o affection_n of_o superiority_n not_o the_o passion_n so_o much_o that_o be_v a_o desire_n of_o deprive_v other_o of_o any_o good_a they_o possess_v which_o we_o have_v not_o as_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v too_o in_o the_o foregoing_a cause_n of_o hatred_n and_o revenge_n but_o the_o cause_n or_o principle_n of_o our_o be_v prone_a to_o this_o passion_n that_o be_v please_v ourselves_o ultimate_o that_o we_o have_v some_o good_a thing_n which_o other_o have_v not_o and_o be_v very_o glad_a they_o have_v they_o not_o and_o sorry_a and_o grieve_a if_o they_o have_v they_o and_o this_o make_v we_o to_o will_v both_o that_o it_o shall_v seem_v so_o to_o we_o and_o that_o it_o real_o shall_v be_v so_o that_o it_o shall_v seem_v so_o and_o therefore_o we_o wilful_o judge_v it_o be_v so_o that_o other_o be_v in_o general_a much_o inferior_a to_o we_o in_o any_o good_a thing_n or_o less_o superior_a at_o least_o than_o indeed_o they_o be_v and_o therefore_o particular_o that_o they_o be_v guilty_a or_o defective_a where_o we_o be_v not_o that_o they_o be_v such_o or_o such_o we_o will_v have_v other_o not_o better_o or_o as_o bad_a or_o worse_o than_o our_o self_n and_o be_v much_o please_v it_o be_v so_o and_o therefore_o we_o make_v it_o to_o seem_v so_o to_o ourselves_o and_o wilful_o judge_v it_o so_o when_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v not_o in_o our_o power_n real_o to_o make_v it_o so_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n envy_n also_o
