ignorance_n or_o extremity_n of_o pain_n may_v by_o themselves_o or_o other_o use_v such_o unlawful_a mean_n or_o though_o they_o use_v physic_n and_o some_o such_o subordinate_a lawful_a help_n yet_o the_o principal_n be_v neglect_v repentance_n for_o sin_n and_o prayer_n unto_o god_n and_o see_v all_o thing_n be_v alike_o to_o all_o man_n 2_o may_v not_o satan_n work_v so_o upon_o the_o mind_n as_o by_o such_o or_o the_o like_a disposition_n to_o bring_v it_o to_o many_o and_o such_o like_a rage_a fit_n either_o tamper_n with_o the_o complexion_n as_o melancholy_n etc._n etc._n or_o further_a those_o passion_n of_o discontent_n and_o despair_n by_o lead_v they_o hereto_o and_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n in_o use_v satan_n as_o a_o instrument_n witch_n to_o inflict_v by_o witchcraft_n these_o chasticement_n upon_o his_o child_n be_v manifold_a as_o first_o to_o humble_v his_o child_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o escape_v this_o scourge_n as_o well_o as_o other_o so_o i_o remember_v the_o lady_n hale_v complain_v what_o can_v i_o have_v no_o other_o affliction_n but_o this_o i_o can_v have_v endure_v any_o so_o it_o have_v not_o be_v by_o this_o etc._n etc._n 2_o to_o comfort_v his_o servant_n that_o see_v they_o shall_v in_o this_o great_a affliction_n have_v a_o comfortable_a issue_n to_o conquer_v satan_n therefore_o hereupon_o they_o may_v build_v the_o certainty_n of_o their_o salvation_n as_o also_o 3_o to_o instruct_v they_o that_o see_v satan_n may_v have_v power_n to_o take_v away_o life_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o hurt_v the_o soul_n final_o therefore_o here_o be_v the_o trial_n of_o their_o faith_n though_o the_o lord_n shall_v kill_v they_o yet_o to_o trust_v in_o he_o 15._o here_o the_o trial_n of_o their_o obedience_n to_o yield_v up_o life_n into_o god_n hand_n here_o also_o their_o wisdom_n try_v 20._o not_o to_o measure_v god_n favour_n by_o outward_a thing_n not_o to_o set_v by_o this_o life_n which_o satan_n may_v prevail_v against_o and_o have_v not_o the_o lord_n in_o this_o affliction_n of_o his_o saint_n stumble_v some_o further_a use_n for_o the_o stumble_a block_n of_o a_o unbelieve_a generation_n yea_o sure_o and_o that_o many_o way_n 1_o both_o to_o flatter_v they_o that_o their_o estate_n be_v good_a note_n see_v the_o godly_a fare_n as_o bad_a as_o they_o do_v 2_o and_o also_o to_o stagger_v they_o that_o their_o estate_n be_v evil_a see_v if_o god_n child_n be_v thus_o afflict_v for_o all_o their_o knowledge_n and_o holiness_n in_o this_o life_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o they_o that_o have_v no_o knowledge_n hate_v holiness_n etc._n etc._n 3_o and_o herein_o yet_o most_o dangerous_o to_o stumble_v they_o that_o see_v the_o knowledge_n and_o holiness_n of_o the_o saint_n can_v free_v they_o from_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n therefore_o away_o with_o knowledge_n welfare_n ignorance_n what_o boot_v it_o to_o be_v precise_a note_n let_v we_o live_v as_o we_o list_v nay_o see_v these_o mean_n can_v preserve_v why_o may_v we_o not_o seek_v to_o other_o and_o so_o a_o gap_n be_v open_a to_o all_o unlawful_a mean_n especial_o if_o we_o observe_v satan_n policy_n herein_o who_o usual_o be_v send_v to_o afflict_v some_o holy_a one_o saint_n return_v as_o confound_v he_o can_v do_v it_o because_o they_o have_v faith_n thereby_o intend_v that_o none_o that_o have_v faith_n be_v subject_a to_o his_o power_n and_o so_o puff_v up_o even_o the_o best_a with_o security_n and_o thereby_o prepare_v they_o through_o vain_a confidence_n to_o his_o malice_n so_o persuade_v the_o world_n that_o he_o can_v touch_v any_o that_o have_v not_o faith_n and_o so_o still_o rob_v god_n of_o his_o glory_n as_o if_o the_o let_v be_v not_o in_o his_o free_a providence_n but_o in_o the_o goodness_n of_o man_n as_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o free_o execute_v his_o providence_n but_o be_v bound_v therein_o by_o somewhat_o in_o man_n and_o then_o he_o must_v be_v send_v to_o the_o child_n of_o the_o faithful_a father_n and_o prevail_v there_o as_o if_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o parent_n do_v not_o hold_v god_n protection_n over_o their_o tender_a infant_n aswell_o as_o over_o themselves_o or_o the_o child_n because_o he_o have_v power_n over_o he_o be_v exclude_v god_n protection_n have_v not_o faith_n be_v not_o of_o the_o faithful_a feed_n and_o if_o now_o at_o the_o length_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o satan_n though_o he_o have_v return_v as_o disappoint_v by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o saint_n yet_o shall_v prevail_v over_o any_o to_o afflict_v and_o torment_v they_o behold_v then_o the_o dangerous_a delusion_n either_o this_o matter_n of_o faith_n be_v but_o a_o mockery_n see_v it_o can_v resist_v satan_n why_o shall_v it_o not_o repel_v he_o on_o the_o one_o side_n as_o well_o as_o on_o the_o other_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o thing_n or_o it_o have_v any_o such_o power_n or_o else_o the_o saint_n may_v loose_v their_o faith_n and_o so_o if_o satan_n prevail_v against_o life_n he_o must_v then_o also_o prevail_v against_o faith_n for_o the_o utter_a abolish_n of_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o what_o difference_n then_o between_o the_o wicked_a and_o godly_a thus_o may_v the_o saint_n be_v subject_a to_o this_o affliction_n and_o thus_o may_v the_o world_n stumble_v thereat_o sectio_fw-la v._o and_o yet_o in_o all_o these_o affliction_n much_o differ_v from_o the_o wicked_a 1_o as_o both_o in_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o affliction_n 25._o 2_o in_o the_o measure_n of_o it_o 3_o in_o the_o issue_n thereof_o for_o the_o cause_n if_o the_o lord_n afflict_v his_o child_n with_o this_o scourge_n neither_o be_v it_o in_o anger_n 1._o or_o simple_o as_o a_o punishment_n of_o sin_n though_o the_o lord_n may_v intend_v the_o chastisement_n of_o the_o sinner_n hereby_o cause_n but_o especial_o 1._o to_o try_v their_o faith_n 2._o to_o provoke_v to_o repentance_n 3._o and_o so_o to_o take_v they_o hereby_o out_o of_o this_o miserable_a world_n but_o in_o the_o wicked_a it_o be_v otherwise_o the_o lord_n be_v angry_a when_o he_o leave_v they_o to_o satan_n he_o intend_v the_o discovery_n of_o their_o infidelity_n and_o unmask_v of_o their_o hypocrisy_n by_o this_o sharp_a affliction_n he_o awaken_v hereby_o their_o drowsy_a conscience_n and_o so_o in_o the_o horror_n thereof_o seal_v up_o unto_o they_o eternal_a vengeance_n and_o leave_v they_o to_o be_v releive_v by_o carnal_a mean_n subject_n they_o thereby_o more_o sure_o to_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n note_n by_o who_o make_v up_o in_o this_o renew_v of_o their_o day_n the_o measure_n of_o their_o sin_n they_o be_v ripen_v and_o hasten_v to_o the_o day_n of_o vengeance_n measure_n thus_o they_o differ_v in_o the_o cause_n 2_o as_o for_o the_o measure_n the_o affliction_n either_o reach_v only_a to_o touch_v the_o body_n or_o else_o if_o the_o soul_n bear_v a_o part_n still_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v put_v under_o psal._n 37._o 24._o comfort_n be_v supply_v according_a to_o the_o affliction_n or_o the_o sharp_a affliction_n prepare_v to_o more_o sound_n and_o heavenly_a consolation_n but_o for_o the_o wicked_a it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o they_o the_o soul_n be_v especial_o aim_v at_o by_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n and_o therefore_o either_o the_o body_n be_v so_o smite_v to_o drive_v the_o soul_n to_o despair_v or_o else_o by_o send_v it_o to_o unlawful_a mean_n the_o soul_n be_v more_o fearful_o ensnare_v by_o confidence_n in_o satan_n and_o so_o hasten_v to_o it_o just_a &_o unavoidable_a confusion_n and_o thus_o they_o differ_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o measure_n 3_o for_o the_o issue_n issue_n the_o saint_n if_o they_o escape_v out_o this_o affliction_n 1_o be_v more_o experience_v in_o satan_n subtlety_n 2_o more_o enable_v to_o comfort_n and_o relieve_v other_o 3_o more_o purge_v of_o carnal_a confidence_n 4_o more_o humble_v and_o cast_v upon_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n 5_o more_o quicken_v in_o faith_n 6_o more_o wean_v from_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n 7_o more_o wary_a to_o keep_v themselves_o within_o god_n protection_n more_o patient_a under_o the_o cross_n 8_o more_o prepare_v to_o death_n 9_o more_o ready_a for_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o if_o they_o be_v translate_v hereby_o they_o make_v a_o happy_a exchange_n of_o sin_n for_o perfect_a holiness_n of_o misery_n for_o eternity_n of_o transitory_a for_o eternal_a happiness_n of_o deceitful_a
he_o be_v now_o so_o at_o the_o witch_n command_v as_o that_o neither_o may_v he_o be_v think_v to_o have_v any_o power_n else_o but_o what_o be_v limit_v to_o her_o lust_n whereas_o indeed_o he_o do_v many_o thing_n of_o himself_o and_o yet_o father_n they_o upon_o the_o witch_n to_o flatter_v she_o in_o her_o sovereignty_n and_o hasten_v she_o to_o vengeance_n yea_o exceed_v often_o the_o commission_n which_o he_o receive_v from_o she_o and_o though_o she_o will_v have_v many_o time_n the_o mischief_n undo_v and_o release_v because_o she_o be_v torment_v by_o such_o charm_n as_o satan_n teach_v to_o dissolve_v the_o witchcraft_n as_o to_o burn_v some_o part_n of_o the_o thing_n bewitch_v etc._n etc._n and_o no_o doubt_n be_v in_o like_a manner_n haunt_v with_o some_o heart-pang_n and_o hell_n of_o conscience_n yet_o can_v she_o not_o give_v the_o least_o ease_n to_o the_o party_n afflict_v especial_o satan_n observe_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n to_o be_v prone_a to_o idolatry_n his_o purpose_n herein_o be_v to_o withdraw_v the_o mind_n from_o god_n and_o settle_v it_o upon_o the_o witch_n as_o if_o satan_n be_v not_o god_n instrument_n to_o afflict_v man_n but_o only_o the_o witch_n servant_n to_o do_v what_o she_o please_v and_o so_o the_o witch_n and_o satan_n in_o the_o witch_n must_v be_v adore_v and_o exalt_v above_o the_o lord_n she_o must_v be_v fear_v rate_a yea_o sometime_o she_o must_v be_v innocent_o condemn_v she_o must_v be_v seek_v unto_o close_v with_o pacify_v with_o gift_n etc._n etc._n sectio_fw-la four_o that_o which_o satan_n bind_v himself_o to_o do_v for_o the_o witch_n be_v to_o appear_v unto_o she_o in_o what_o form_n she_o please_v 1_o to_o confirm_v her_o conceit_a power_n 2_o to_o prevent_v that_o fear_n which_o may_v arise_v from_o more_o horrible_a apparition_n and_o so_o to_o nourish_v in_o security_n herein_o he_o decive_v diverse_o 1_o as_o first_o that_o he_o be_v no_o where_o present_a but_o in_o these_o form_n 2_o that_o he_o be_v always_o present_a in_o these_o form_n whereas_o indeed_o he_o delude_v oftentimes_o the_o sense_n hereby_o 3_o that_o according_o to_o the_o multitude_n of_o form_n so_o be_v their_o many_o devil_n that_o the_o witch_n may_v the_o rather_o glory_v in_o the_o multitude_n of_o these_o servant_n 4_o that_o the_o creature_n of_o almighty_a god_n 4._o which_o in_o themselves_o be_v good_a and_o serviceable_a for_o use_v may_v be_v fear_v and_o hate_v yea_o adore_a and_o respect_v as_o presage_n of_o good_a or_o evil_n as_o when_o a_o hare_n cross_v the_o way_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o our_o right_n in_o the_o creature_n question_v but_o especial_o satan_n cunning_a in_o appear_v in_o these_o form_n even_o of_o familiar_a creature_n which_o if_o they_o can_v hurt_v it_o be_v but_o only_o the_o body_n 1_o be_v both_o to_o hide_v that_o special_a tyranny_n and_o cruelty_n of_o he_o which_o he_o extend_v against_o the_o soul_n 2_o and_o to_o nourish_v this_o conceit_n by_o these_o appearance_n that_o his_o power_n be_v limit_v by_o that_o creature_n and_o so_o not_o to_o be_v fear_v so_o to_o be_v light_o regard_v and_o despise_v of_o we_o as_o busy_v themselves_o about_o such_o trifle_n as_o to_o keep_v drink_n from_o work_v and_o whereas_o indeed_o under_o colour_n of_o these_o they_o prey_n upon_o the_o soul_n stir_v up_o to_o revenge_n coveteousnesse_n uncleanness_n etc._n etc._n yea_o overthrow_v of_o kingdom_n root_a out_o the_o gospel_n which_o that_o they_o may_v effect_v more_o secure_o when_o they_o be_v not_o espy_v and_o prevent_v therefore_o they_o labour_v to_o occupy_v man_n mind_n in_o these_o base_a and_o slight_a matter_n that_o so_o they_o may_v not_o suspect_v or_o prevent_v they_o in_o the_o other_o and_o do_v not_o satan_n notable_o delude_v the_o ignorant_a people_n that_o by_o this_o covenant_n with_o the_o witch_n to_o be_v at_o her_o command_n he_o make_v the_o simple_a people_n believe_v that_o he_o never_o come_v but_o at_o the_o witch_n send_v and_o so_o both_o provoke_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o curry_v favour_n with_o the_o witch_n by_o entertainment_n gift_n what_o not_o whereby_o they_o become_v subject_a through_o this_o infidelity_n to_o satan_n power_n as_o also_o prepare_v way_n hereby_o to_o seek_v to_o the_o witch_n for_o help_v and_o so_o be_v further_o ensnare_v to_o the_o danger_n of_o the_o soul_n nay_o do_v he_o not_o by_o submit_v himself_o to_o base_a mean_n as_o by_o burn_v a_o spit_n red_a hot_a etc._n etc._n whereby_o he_o seem_v to_o be_v remove_v herein_o little_a how_o satan_n deceive_v by_o this_o subjection_n first_o in_o that_o he_o pretend_v to_o be_v at_o their_o command_n he_o thereby_o secure_v they_o as_o if_o their_o state_n be_v safe_a give_v they_o such_o power_n over_o satan_n nay_o he_o further_o bewitch_v they_o that_o now_o they_o be_v as_o god_n be_v able_a to_o command_v satan_n who_o none_o can_v over-rule_v but_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o provoke_v to_o horrible_a blasphemy_n and_o idolatry_n to_o advance_v themselves_o in_o god_n steed_n to_o save_v life_n and_o to_o destroy_v it_o at_o pleasure_n and_o thereupon_o infer_v a_o further_a security_n of_o their_o estate_n that_o they_o which_o can_v thus_o dispose_v of_o other_o estate_n they_o be_v wise_a enough_o to_o secure_v their_o own_o or_o at_o least_o what_o need_v they_o more_o than_o to_o enjoy_v this_o sovereignty_n to_o exercise_v this_o liberty_n note_v thus_o to_o satisfy_v their_o utmost_a desire_n hitherto_o serve_v another_o sleight_n of_o satan_n herein_o that_o be_v now_o at_o their_o command_n he_o have_v no_o power_n but_o from_o they_o when_o they_o call_v he_o must_v run_v otherwise_o he_o quitch_v not_o and_o hence_o arise_v this_o delusion_n that_o see_v they_o know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o themselves_o therefore_o they_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o keep_v he_o safe_a from_o hurt_v they_o and_o here_o satan_n have_v another_o trick_n yet_o further_o to_o beguile_v they_o namely_o to_o consire_fw-mi himself_o as_o a_o ape_n to_o his_o clog_n to_o some_o box_n or_o prison_n where_o he_o lie_v as_o bound_v not_o to_o stir_v but_o when_o the_o witch_n call_v she_o as_o his_o goalor_n must_v give_v he_o liberty_n whereas_o he_o still_o go_v about_o like_o a_o roar_a lion_n stir_v up_o in_o the_o heart_n desire_v of_o revenge_n covetousness_n etc._n etc._n while_o he_o seem_v to_o lie_v still_o from_o bodily_a harm_n and_o nourish_a pride_n and_o infidelive_v by_o this_o his_o sained_a bondage_n and_o so_o harden_v in_o security_n while_o he_o cease_v from_o outward_a hurt_n sectio_fw-la vii_o and_o do_v he_o not_o also_o by_o this_o his_o sayned_a subject_n on_o to_o the_o witch_n deceive_v the_o unbelieve_a world_n yea_o certame_o and_o that_o many_o way_n as_o first_o he_o withdraweth_a they_o from_o the_o acknowledgement_n of_o god_n providence_n who_o only_o have_v power_n to_o send_v these_o evil_a angel_n to_o torment_v the_o wicked_a and_o afflict_v his_o child_n and_o so_o to_o rob_v god_n of_o his_o glory_n herein_o and_o to_o refer_v it_o to_o the_o witch_n as_o if_o satan_n be_v only_o at_o her_o dispose_n and_o for_o their_o further_a confusion_n herein_o he_o provoke_v they_o in_o revenge_n of_o their_o wrong_n not_o to_o look_v into_o their_o sin_n which_o cause_n the_o same_o or_o to_o look_v up_o to_o god_n who_o only_o can_v heal_v because_o he_o give_v the_o wound_n but_o to_o cry_v out_o upon_o the_o witch_n to_o harry_v she_o to_o the_o justice_n to_o scratch_v and_o practice_v against_o she_o and_o so_o many_o time_n to_o
shed_v innocent_a blood_n in_o accuse_v wrongful_o or_o at_o the_o best_a though_o the_o law_n may_v be_v satisfy_v yet_o god_n be_v not_o glorify_v nor_o themselves_o true_o releive_v see_v by_o use_v unlawful_a mean_n for_o help_n though_o the_o body_n may_v find_v ease_n yet_o the_o soul_n thereby_o be_v more_o dangerous_o ensnare_v and_o have_v not_o satan_n another_o dangerous_a fetch_n in_o this_o subjection_n that_o whereas_o many_o disease_n come_v of_o natural_a cause_n which_o be_v well_o know_v to_o satan_n though_o the_o simple_a people_n be_v utter_o ignorant_a thereof_o yet_o see_v the_o witch_n in_o malice_n intend_v the_o hurt_n of_o her_o neighbour_n and_o to_o this_o end_n set_v satan_n on_o work_n hereupon_o it_o be_v conclude_v that_o all_o disease_n proceed_v from_o sorcery_n and_o so_o hereby_o all_o sober_a and_o wise_a mean_n be_v neglect_v to_o preserve_v health_n the_o bridle_n be_v give_v to_o all_o riot_n and_o excess_n and_o if_o any_o thing_n perform_v some_o hypocritical_a repentance_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o observe_v i_o pray_v you_o his_o deepness_n in_o make_v her_o sure_a namely_o to_o prevent_v after_o repentance_n or_o at_o least_o to_o deceive_v thereby_o chap._n vi_o of_o the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o covenant_n he_o have_v further_o diverse_a ceremony_n accompany_v this_o covenant_n which_o tend_v very_o fearful_o to_o the_o confirmation_n thereof_o and_o these_o be_v first_o as_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o special_a seal_n to_o bind_v his_o servant_n unto_o his_o obedience_n namely_o the_o seal_n of_o baptism_n rom._n 4._o so_o when_o satan_n have_v once_o obtain_v this_o absolute_a promise_n of_o his_o prentice_n to_o yield_v themselves_o whole_o to_o his_o devotion_n than_o his_o manner_n be_v to_o set_v his_o seal_n upon_o they_o thereby_o to_o appropriate_v they_o unto_o he_o and_o this_o be_v common_o some_o sure_a mark_n upon_o some_o secret_a place_n of_o their_o body_n which_o shall_v remain_v sore_o
