¶_o the_o remedy_n against_o the_o trouble_n of_o temptacyon_n ●here_o after_o follow_v four_o proufytable_a thing_n to_o have_v in_o mind_n which_o have_v be_v take_v out_o of_o y_z e_z three_o chapter_n of_o a_o devoute_a treatyse_n and_o a_o form_n of_o lyvinge_v that_o the_o dyscrete_a &_o virtuous_a richard_n hampole_a write_v to_o a_o devoute_a &_o a_o holy_a person_n for_o great_a love_n the_o first_o measure_n of_o thy_o lyf_v which_o be_v so_o short_a that_o unnethe_n it_o be_v any_o thing_n for_z we_o live_v here_o but_o in_o a_o point_n that_o be_v the_o least_fw-mi thing_n y_fw-mi it_o may_v be_v and_o for_o to_o say_v sothe_o our_o life_n be_v less_o than_o a_o point_n if_o we_o shall_v liken_v it_o to_o the_o life_n everla_a an_o other_o thing_n be_v the_o uncertaynte_n of_o our_o end_n for_o we_o wot_v not_o when_o we_o shall_v dye_v nor_o how_o we_o shall_v dye_v nor_o whether_o we_o shall_v go_v when_o we_o be_v deed_n and_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v that_o it_o be_v to_o we_o uncertain_a for_z he_o wyll_v that_o we_o be_v always_o ready_a to_o dye_v the_o three_o be_v y_o it_o we_o shall_v answer_v before_o the_o right_a wise_a juge_n of_o all_o the_o time_n y_fw-fr t_o we_o have_v be_v here_o how_o we_o have_v live_v what_o our_o occupacyon_n have_v be_v and_z what_o good_a we_o may_v have_v do_v when_o we_o have_v be_v idle_a therefore_o you_o e_o prophet_n say_a he_o have_v call_v the_o time_n against_o i_o that_o be_v for_o every_o day_n he_o have_v lent_fw-la we_o here_o to_o spend_v in_o good_a use_n as_o in_o penance_n and_o in_o god_n seruyce_n and_o if_o we_o waste_v it_o in_o erthly_a love_n and_o vanytee_n full_a grevous_o must_v we_o be_v deem_v and_o punyssh_v therefore_o it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o moo_v sorrow_n y_o it_o may_v be_v to_o we_o but_o if_o we_o enforce_v we_o to_o the_o contrary_a &_o set_v our_o herte_n to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o do_v good_a to_o all_o that_o we_o may_v in_o y_z e_z short_a while_n that_o our_o time_n last_v for_o each_o time_n y_fw-fr t_o we_o think_v not_o of_o god_n we_o may_v count_v it_o as_o lose_v the_o four_o be_v that_o we_o think_v how_o moche_n the_o joy_n be_v that_o they_o shall_v have_v which_o contynu_v in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o their_o end_n for_z they_o shall_v be_v brother_n &_o fellow_n with_o angel_n sing_v the_o king_n of_o joy_n in_o his_o beauty_n and_o shine_a majesty_n the_o which_o shall_v be_v to_o they_o above_o all_o the_o delight_n that_o any_o creature_n may_v think_v than_o to_o remember_v the_o great_a and_o intolerable_a sorrow_n pain_n &_o turmente_n which_o they_o shall_v have_v that_o love_v not_o god_n above_o all_o thing_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o this_o world_n many_o of_o that_o dysposycyon_n which_o set_v all_o their_o pleasure_n in_o lust_n and_o like_n of_o this_o lyf_v as_z in_o pride_n covetyse_v and_o other_o sin_n they_o shall_v brenne_n in_o the_o fire_n of_o hell_n with_o the_o devyll_n who_o they_o serve_v as_o long_o as_o god_n be_v in_o heaven_n with_o his_o servant_n that_o last_v ever_o ¶_o here_o follow_v and_o ensew_v a_o soverayne_a notable_a sentence_n to_o comfort_v a_o person_n that_o be_v in_o temptacyon_n our_o merciful_a lord_n god_n cryst_n ihesu_n chastyse_v his_o child_n and_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v tempt_v for_o many_o proufytable_a cause_n to_o their_o soul_n health_n &_o therefore_o shall_v no_o man_n nor_o woman_n be_v hevy_a or_o sorry_a for_o any_o temptacyon_n for_o as_o saint_n james_n the_o apostle_n tech_v we_o we_o shall_v have_v very_o great_a joy_n when_o we_o be_v tempt_v with_o dyvers_a temptacyon_n for_z as_o the_o gold_n be_v pure_v and_o purge_v by_o the_o fire_n and_o a_o knight_n in_o batayle_n be_v prove_v good_a right_a so_o be_v a_o man_n by_o temptacyon_n prove_v for_o good_a but_o if_o he_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v overcome_v that_o be_v to_o say_v but_o he_o consent_v thereto_o by_o delyberacyon_n for_o sothe_o when_o a_o man_n be_v sharp_o tempt_v he_o may_v then_o have_v hope_n of_o grace_n virtue_n and_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o a_o man_n moche_n to_o be_v trouble_v with_o temptacyon_n for_o every_o virtue_n be_v prove_v by_o his_o contrary_n our_o enemy_n the_o fiend_n be_v besy_n day_n and_o night_n to_o tarry_v and_o travail_v good_a man_n and_o woman_n with_o dyvers_a temptacyon_n in_o doubt_n of_o the_o faith_n and_o drede_n of_o saluacyon_n and_o other_o many_o moo_o in_o dyvers_a manner_n and_o specyal_o now_o in_o these_o day_n he_o be_v full_a besy_n to_o deceyve_v many_o soul_n and_o therefore_o wise_o rule_v you_o to_o withstand_v his_o violent_a sterynge_n of_o temptacyon_n &_o for_o all_o that_o take_v you_o no_o drede_n of_o his_o assawte_n ne_o have_v you_o any_o doubt_n of_o his_o error_n ne_o dyspyte_n nor_o of_o his_o false_a leasynge_n or_o fantasye_n or_o any_o manner_n of_o travail_n of_o that_o foul_a fiend_n whether_o you_o hear_v he_o see_v he_o or_o think_v of_o he_o take_v no_o heed_n thereof_o for_o all_o be_v matter_n of_o great_a meed_n and_o no_o sin_n in_o no_o wise_n be_v they_o never_o so_o troublous_a or_o full_a of_o anguyssh_n while_o it_o come_v of_o the_o malice_n of_o the_o fiend_n or_o of_o evyll_n dysposycyon_n of_o man_n nature_n or_o compleccyon_n and_o therefore_o all_o such_o travail_n man_n ought_v not_o to_o charge_v but_o suffer_v mekely_a and_o abide_v pacyent_o till_o god_n do_v remedy_n thereto_o and_o for_o as_o moche_v as_o they_o be_v matter_n of_o great_a meed_n none_o ought_v to_o stryve_v there_o against_o nor_o marvel_v of_o they_o ne_fw-fr seek_v the_o cause_n nor_o think_v by_o what_o skill_n he_o be_v so_o travayl_v for_o the_o more_o that_o a_o man_n labour_v in_o seching_n and_o think_n of_o such_o anguyssh_n the_o more_o deep_o he_o fall_v in_o to_o error_n and_o therefore_o in_o as_o moche_v as_o man_n thought_n be_v often_o vain_a and_o dyvers_a and_o none_o end_n have_v it_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v force_v or_o be_v take_v heed_n of_o ne_z a_o man_n shall_v not_o anger_n himself_o therewith_o ne_fw-la blame_n ne_o impute_v it_o to_o his_o own_o defaute_n that_o he_o be_v so_o trouble_a for_o such_o travaylle_n be_v painful_a but_o not_o sinful_a in_o so_o moche_v as_o they_o be_v grete_o against_o his_o will_n saint_n augustyne_n say_v that_o every_o sin_n lie_v in_o wylfull_a will_n and_o what_o that_o be_v against_o man_n will_n be_v no_o sin_n and_o the_o holy_a doctor_n ysodore_v de_fw-fr summo_fw-la bono_fw-mi say_v that_o the_o fiend_n tempt_v a_o man_n no_o more_o than_o god_n gyve_v he_o leave_v therefore_o let_v we_o have_v always_o a_o good_a will_n to_o will_v well_o and_o do_v well_o and_z god_n will_v keep_v we_o and_o gyve_v we_o the_o vyctory_n &_o so_o the_o fiend_n shall_v be_v confound_v faith_n &_o hope_n be_v ground_n of_o all_o perfeccyon_n and_o rote_n of_o all_o virtue_n and_o therefore_o our_o old_a enemy_n the_o fiend_n be_v full_a besy_n with_o all_o his_o sleyghte_n to_o draw_v the_o soul_n down_o therfro_o and_o it_o hap_v sometime_o that_o the_o fiend_n tempt_v and_o travayl_v a_o right_a wise_a soul_n so_o sharp_o that_o it_o be_v overlayde_v with_o care_n and_o dryven_v to_o dyspayre_v and_o yet_o all_o that_o time_n though_o the_o soul_n perceyve_v it_o not_o it_o dwell_v still_o in_o the_o drede_n and_o love_n of_o god_n and_o all_o that_o travail_n be_v to_o their_o great_a meed_n afore_o god_n for_z our_o lord_n of_o his_o endless_a mercy_n arrect_v not_o to_o y_z e_z soul_n that_o sin_n which_o himself_o suffer_v the_o fiend_n to_o werke_v in_o the_o soul_n without_o the_o consent_n or_o will_n of_o the_o say_a self_n soul_n but_o when_o we_o wilful_o do_v against_o the_o will_n of_o god_n with_o delyberacyon_n than_o we_o commytte_a sin_n actual_o but_o when_o we_o be_v draw_v with_o wicked_a violence_n or_o vile_a thought_n &_o turment_v with_o dyspayre_n against_o our_o will_n thorugh_v the_o fende_v violent_a tempting_a we_o suffer_v pain_n but_o we_o do_v no_o sin_n &_o yet_o the_o silly_a soul_n knowledge_n be_v hide_v by_o that_o turment_n ¶_o the_o second_o chapytre_n ●ut_v yet_o right_a often_o the_o tempting_a of_o the_o fiend_n that_o make_v the_o soul_n to_o err_v in_o faith_n and_o foul_a fantasye_a &_o in_o dyspayre_n seem_v to_o the_o self_n soul_n great_a sin_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o for_o all_o holy_a doctor_n say_v that_o faith_n and_o hope_n be_v virtue_n of_o man_n will_n wherefore_o who_o so_o will_v right_a wysly_a byleve_n in_o this_o lyf_v he_o be_v in_o right_a byleve_n before_o god_n and_z like_o wise_n who_o so_o will_v here_o
