the_o strict_a rule_n of_o god_n law_n and_o the_o work_n of_o nature_n or_o wrought_v by_o natural_a strength_n be_v proper_o call_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n rom._n 9_o 32._o and_o the_o promise_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o legal_a but_o mere_o evangelicall_a for_o the_o condition_n here_o be_v not_o of_o any_o work_n moral_a and_o natural_a but_o of_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o of_o christ_n himself_o to_o be_v apprehend_v by_o faith_n last_o those_o particular_a promise_n they_o be_v partly_o evangelicall_a partly_o legal_a for_o the_o condition_n be_v of_o work_n which_o proceed_v from_o grace_n and_o regeneration_n and_o therefore_o of_o such_o work_v as_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o original_n may_v true_o be_v call_v evangelicall_a work_n but_o because_o the_o law_n moral_a be_v the_o rule_n of_o they_o in_o this_o respect_n they_o may_v also_o be_v call_v legal_a work_n three_o these_o promise_n differ_v in_o subject_n because_o 20._o 11._o 32._o gal._n 3._o 22._o and_o 5._o 23._o this_o be_v the_o use_n then_o of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n to_o work_v in_o we_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o misery_n and_o to_o prepare_v man_n to_o receive_v grace_n therefore_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n begin_v with_o the_o legal_a doctrine_n of_o work_n and_o of_o the_o law_n moral_a for_o the_o gospel_n shall_v preach_v and_o promise_v in_o vain_a righteousness_n and_o life_n to_o the_o believer_n if_o they_o be_v not_o first_o prepare_v by_o feel_v their_o own_o corruption_n and_o miserable_a condition_n to_o hear_v and_o receive_v grace_n by_o the_o gospel_n for_o this_o cause_n christ_n himself_o first_o matth._n 5._o 17._o and_o after_o free_v and_o restore_v the_o law_n as_o pure_a from_o the_o leven_a of_o justification_n which_o be_v by_o christ_n only_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n only_o by_o faith_n only_o for_o all_o these_o have_v one_o respect_n and_o purpose_n observe_v then_o here_o by_o the_o way_n what_o the_o palpable_a blindness_n of_o the_o papist_n be_v in_o this_o clear_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n blindness_n popish_a blindness_n first_o they_o see_v not_o how_o nature_n be_v plain_o lose_v as_o touch_v sanctity_n second_o they_o know_v not_o the_o sole_a grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n neither_o do_v they_o understand_v what_o the_o excellency_n be_v of_o christ_n merit_n three_o they_o perceive_v not_o how_o that_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v abolish_v to_o they_o which_o be_v in_o christ_n as_o touch_v justification_n four_o they_o conceive_v not_o that_o the_o only_a covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v make_v with_o mankind_n after_o the_o fall_n special_o now_o after_o the_o incarnation_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o unto_o justification_n and_o life_n eternal_a five_o they_o see_v not_o that_o the_o work_n of_o free_a will_n as_o they_o call_v they_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o to_o be_v duty_n only_o and_o testimony_n of_o thankfulness_n according_a to_o the_o first_o institution_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o be_v do_v by_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n but_o ascribe_v some_o special_a meritorious_a virtue_n unto_o they_o wherefore_o we_o conclude_v concern_v these_o man_n that_o albeit_o they_o be_v not_o just_a of_o one_o mind_n with_o those_o old_a jew_n against_o who_o the_o apostle_n dispute_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n yet_o they_o hold_v much_o on_o their_o side_n strive_v to_o defend_v that_o nature_n be_v in_o part_n good_a and_o holy_a so_o contend_v against_o the_o pure_a and_o only_a grace_n of_o god_n and_o to_o divide_v justification_n and_o justification_n the_o popish_a justification_n man_n salvation_n between_o christ_n and_o god_n free_a grace_n &_o the_o virtue_n and_o work_n of_o nature_n whereas_o notwithstanding_o these_o two_o nature_n and_o grace_n can_v never_o stand_v together_o in_o the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n for_o whosoever_o shall_v conjoin_v or_o make_v a_o mixture_n of_o grace_n and_o nature_n in_o this_o matter_n shall_v quite_o overthrow_v and_o extinguish_v grace_n which_o either_o be_v alone_o or_o not_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o with_o the_o gospel_n and_o these_o jew_n as_o i_o judge_v the_o papist_n seem_v most_o to_o resemble_v i_o mean_v those_o jew_n against_o who_o he_o write_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o galathian_o for_o in_o that_o other_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n he_o dispute_v against_o such_o jew_n as_o do_v open_o deny_v christ_n and_o reject_v he_o but_o to_o the_o galathian_o his_v disputation_n be_v against_o such_o jew_n as_o be_v not_o content_a with_o christ_n only_o but_o will_v have_v christ_n and_o the_o law_n join_v together_o thus_o far_o of_o the_o comparison_n between_o paul_n and_o we_o on_o the_o one_o side_n the_o old_a jew_n and_o the_o papist_n on_o the_o other_o now_o because_o it_o will_v be_v demand_v what_o paul_n think_v of_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n and_o what_o we_o and_o what_o the_o adversary_n think_v also_o therefore_o i_o will_v touch_v this_o question_n in_o few_o word_n here_o then_o some_o one_o will_v say_v do_v paul_n then_o in_o that_o disputation_n to_o the_o rom._n and_o to_o the_o galathian_o oppugn_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o regeneration_n i_o answer_v paul_n chief_a purpose_n in_o that_o disputation_n be_v against_o the_o work_n of_o nature_n which_o the_o jew_n think_v to_o be_v holy_a and_o just_a and_o also_o meritorious_a he_o do_v not_o reject_v the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n as_o they_o be_v duty_n and_o testimony_n of_o thankfulness_n unto_o god_n but_o in_o that_o respect_n commend_v they_o rom._n 6._o 7._o 8._o chapter_n and_o in_o other_o place_n but_o as_o touch_v the_o cause_n of_o justification_n he_o will_v not_o have_v these_o work_n as_o we_o call_v they_o of_o regeneration_n couple_v with_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n or_o with_o christ_n or_o with_o faith_n as_o any_o cause_n or_o as_o part_v of_o any_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o salvation_n to_o this_o purpose_n he_o say_v rom._n 4._o that_o abraham_n himself_o be_v regenerate_v be_v not_o justify_v before_o god_n by_o any_o work_n of_o his_o regeneration_n and_o rom._n 6._o have_v commend_v the_o work_n of_o sanctification_n in_o the_o end_n vers_n 23._o where_o he_o attribute_v death_n to_o the_o merit_n of_o sin_n he_o do_v not_o there_o notwithstanding_o ascribe_v life_n eternal_a to_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o work_n or_o fruit_n of_o sanctification_n but_o when_o he_o have_v say_v respect_n whereof_o also_o they_o account_v good_a work_v meritorious_a as_o be_v before_o work_n the_o popish_a opinion_n of_o good_a work_n show_v so_o ascribe_v their_o good_a work_n in_o part_n
