member_n either_o suffer_v or_o rejoice_v in_o company_n with_o another_o charity_n deem_v the_o neighbour_n either_o good_a or_o ill_o as_o proper_a to_o itself_o he_o that_o out_o of_o envy_n and_o malice_n either_o extenuate_v or_o traduce_v the_o action_n of_o his_o neighbour_n love_v not_o i_o it_o be_v never_o see_v that_o the_o hand_n will_v hurt_v the_o foot_n he_o that_o assi_v not_o by_o he_o especial_o if_o it_o be_v hard_a and_o troublesome_a this_o be_v not_o the_o desire_n of_o a_o good_a and_o true_a religious_a man_n labour_v to_o perfection_n but_o only_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o seem_v religious_a in_o name_n and_o not_o indeed_o and_o to_o wish_v that_o the_o superior_a be_v a_o statue_n or_o image_n &_o not_o a_o living_n man_n other_o will_v have_v a_o superior_a industrious_a and_o diligent_a in_o procure_v necessarye_n appertain_v to_o meat_n drink_n clothing_n and_o like_a commodity_n and_o in_o all_o event_n to_o take_v a_o special_a care_n in_o patronise_a defend_v and_o help_v they_o but_o they_o wisâ—_n he_o not_o to_o be_v so_o vigilant_a in_o observation_n oâ—_n religious_a discipline_n which_o depend_v oâ—_n obedience_n and_o this_o desire_n be_v much_o worse_a than_o the_o former_a for_o to_o wish_v this_o be_v nothing_o else_o then_o to_o have_v a_o will_n and_o desire_n thaâ—_n the_o superior_a make_v his_o subject_n not_o good_a religious_a but_o idle_a and_o slothful_a who_o may_v have_v care_n of_o their_o body_n and_o neglect_v to_o direct_v their_o soul_n in_o the_o way_n of_o spirit_n who_o may_v be_v a_o good_a companion_n and_o a_o bad_a superior_a the_o subject_n who_o have_v a_o desire_n that_o his_o superior_a shall_v not_o perform_v the_o office_n of_o a_o good_a superior_a do_v manifest_o declare_v that_o he_o carry_v himself_o not_o for_o a_o good_a subject_n under_o he_o of_o the_o first_o degree_n of_o obedience_n which_o consist_v in_o execution_n of_o any_o thing_n command_v chap._n xxv_o please_v i_o if_o it_o grow_v of_o a_o cold_a &_o languish_a will_n it_o be_v the_o more_o displease_v unto_o i_o because_o the_o effect_n be_v bad_a and_o the_o cause_n worse_o he_o that_o have_v time_n to_o do_v what_o obedience_n command_v and_o put_v it_o off_o suffer_v the_o loss_n of_o time_n and_o put_v himself_o in_o danger_n of_o not_o do_v what_o he_o shall_v and_o if_o the_o religious_a differ_v to_o obey_v because_o he_o be_v busy_v in_o some_o particular_a matter_n of_o his_o own_o he_o displease_v i_o more_o because_o he_o prefer_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o business_n before_o the_o business_n of_o his_o superior_a the_o true_o obedient_a that_o he_o may_v obey_v perfect_o leave_v his_o business_n begone_v and_o unperfect_a o_o how_o much_o do_v those_o religious_a please_v i_o who_o if_o but_o a_o sign_n be_v give_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o the_o holy_a rule_n or_o superior_a shall_v appoint_v do_v leave_v off_o even_o pious_a work_n they_o have_v in_o hand_n and_o come_v run_v to_o what_o be_v command_v and_o they_o gain_v my_o singular_a favour_n who_o to_o do_v any_o act_n of_o obedience_n interrupt_v the_o talk_n they_o have_v begin_v with_o i_o in_o prayer_n 3._o consider_v thou_o now_o how_o little_a those_o be_v in_o my_o grace_n who_o blind_v with_o self-love_n lest_o they_o shall_v be_v deprive_v of_o any_o their_o a_o sign_n be_v no_o soon_o give_v than_o the_o thing_n be_v do_v and_o dispatch_v and_o they_o be_v so_o quick_a and_o speedy_a in_o execution_n thereof_o as_o while_o the_o thing_n be_v yet_o in_o do_v they_o cry_v aloud_o that_o it_o be_v dispatch_v and_o though_o they_o be_v so_o diligent_a and_o quick_a for_o fear_v of_o blow_n yet_o the_o love_n of_o god_n shall_v make_v the_o religious_a more_o prompt_a in_o this_o kind_n since_o love_n be_v more_o strong_a and_o more_o effectual_a than_o fear_n 4._o neither_o be_v this_o to_o be_v see_v in_o the_o galley_n alone_o where_o a_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o chain_n and_o the_o mariner_n with_o whip_n in_o their_o hand_n but_o also_o in_o the_o court_n of_o great_a lord_n for_o i_o ask_v of_o thou_o what_o be_v it_o that_o make_v the_o servant_n so_o ready_a and_o quick_a at_o the_o very_a voice_n and_o call_v of_o their_o lord_n be_v it_o the_o hope_n of_o reward_n but_o that_o be_v more_o liberal_a with_o i_o be_v it_o the_o love_n they_o bear_v towards_o their_o lord_n but_o much_o great_a love_n be_v due_a to_o i_o for_o goodness_n and_o bounty_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o love_n be_v far_o more_o excellent_a in_o i_o and_o the_o reward_n which_o be_v expect_v from_o i_o be_v without_o comparison_n great_a indeed_o the_o slowness_n of_o the_o religious_a proceed_v of_o the_o want_n of_o love_n if_o the_o subject_n be_v better_o affect_v to_o their_o superior_a they_o will_v also_o be_v more_o diligent_a in_o fulfil_n of_o obedience_n in_o which_o kind_n the_o child_n of_o this_o world_n be_v more_o wise_a and_o more_o ready_a than_o the_o child_n of_o light_n 5._o another_o condition_n be_v that_o obedience_n be_v intiere_a for_o such_o be_v my_o own_o obedience_n it_o shall_v be_v enough_o for_o religious_a man_n to_o love_v this_o entiernesse_n if_o they_o thorough_o understand_v that_o this_o be_v my_o will_n and_o such_o the_o superior_n intention_n that_o what_o be_v command_v be_v entire_o do_v there_o be_v those_o who_o be_v only_o ready_a to_o obey_v in_o matter_n of_o great_a moment_n but_o not_o in_o little_a to_o other_o it_o seem_v enough_o if_o they_o do_v part_n of_o the_o thing_n by_o the_o superior_a command_v and_o leave_v the_o rest_n undo_v i_o know_v not_o who_o have_v make_v they_o judge_n or_o interpreter_n of_o obedience_n neither_o do_v i_o know_v whence_o they_o have_v learn_v that_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a to_o obey_v to_o all_o that_o the_o superior_a decreeth_n or_o command_v 6._o let_v they_o say_v when_o they_o vow_v obedience_n whether_o they_o think_v they_o be_v to_o obey_v in_o all_o thing_n or_o but_o in_o some_o whether_o they_o understand_v that_o they_o be_v always_o to_o obey_v or_o only_o for_o a_o time_n and_o if_o they_o understand_v that_o they_o be_v to_o obey_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n but_o for_o a_o certain_a time_n only_o who_o will_v accept_v of_o such_o a_o vow_n sure_o i_o accept_v not_o the_o vow_n of_o half_a and_o mayn_v obedience_n but_o of_o that_o which_o be_v entiere_fw-fr and_o whole_a if_o some_o servant_n shall_v do_v but_o part_v of_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v command_v he_o by_o but_o the_o elder_a they_o wax_v in_o the_o serve_v of_o god_n the_o more_o they_o love_v and_o reverence_v it_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n they_o be_v very_o earnest_a and_o desirous_a that_o they_o may_v give_v up_o their_o last_o breath_n to_o god_n upon_o the_o bare_a ground_n 7._o on_o the_o contrary_a side_n i_o be_o not_o a_o little_a displease_v to_o see_v some_o religious_a so_o little_a devote_a to_o poverty_n as_o those_o who_o discommend_v it_o have_v a_o horror_n to_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v detest_v and_o by_o deed_n also_o go_v against_o it_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o in_o their_o meat_n and_o drink_v in_o their_o clothing_n and_o habitation_n they_o will_v be_v entreat_v commodious_o and_o daint_o yea_o &_o that_o better_a and_o more_o commodious_o than_o they_o entreat_v themselves_o in_o the_o world_n and_o if_o they_o have_v not_o every_o thing_n as_o they_o listen_v they_o be_v trouble_v and_o can_v take_v no_o rest_n at_o all_o and_o what_o a_o infelicity_n be_v this_o they_o give_v over_o the_o world_n to_o serve_v i_o they_o leave_v all_o their_o riches_n neglect_v their_o commodity_n and_o of_o themselves_o vow_v poverty_n that_o they_o may_v ever_o lead_v a_o quiet_a life_n and_o after_o they_o be_v once_o enter_v into_o religion_n they_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v disquiet_v and_o trouble_v for_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o superior_n understanding_n convince_a by_o another_o different_a reason_n inclyne_v another_o way_n in_o the_o same_o thing_n how_o can_v the_o subject_n in_o this_o matter_n conform_v his_o own_o judgement_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o his_o superior_a when_o it_o be_v not_o in_o his_o power_n to_o revoke_v his_o understanding_n from_o the_o truth_n former_o know_v 3._o son_n what_o thou_o say_v be_v true_a when_o the_o truth_n be_v know_v for_o than_o it_o so_o convince_v the_o understanding_n as_o it_o can_v be_v induce_v or_o incline_v to_o the_o contrary_n but_o when_o evidency_n and_o certainty_n be_v want_v the_o understanding_n holpen_v by_o the_o will_n may_v rather_o be_v incline_v to_o one_o part_n then_o to_o the_o other_o and_o then_o the_o obedient_a that_o he_o err_v not_o aught_o to_o submit_v his_o judgement_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o his_o superior_a so_o as_o that_o he_o may_v not_o err_v in_o will_n he_o submit_v it_o also_o to_o the_o superior_n will_n neither_o yet_o because_o many_o subject_n be_v of_o more_o sharp_a wit_n and_o of_o a_o more_o mature_a judgement_n than_o the_o superior_a be_v be_v they_o therefore_o exempt_v from_o this_o subjection_n for_o so_o long_o as_o they_o be_v member_n they_o must_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o head_n but_o suppose_v that_o those_o subject_n be_v more_o intelligent_a for_o knowledge_n of_o learning_n yet_o in_o matter_n and_o manner_n of_o government_n god_n ever_o give_v great_a light_n to_o the_o superior_a then_o to_o the_o subject_n and_o therefore_o his_o judgement_n must_v be_v that_o the_o superior_a have_v not_o command_v something_o aright_o which_o yet_o be_v not_o accompany_v with_o sin_n whether_o do_v the_o subject_n therefore_o err_v therein_o if_o he_o obey_v in_o no_o case_n be_v he_o deprive_v of_o the_o merit_n of_o obedience_n neither_o why_o they_o shall_v he_o not_o submit_v his_o judgement_n in_o all_o thing_n to_o the_o superior_a when_o i_o be_v in_o not_o call_v thou_o out_o of_o the_o world_n to_o dispute_v or_o to_o examine_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v by_o the_o superior_a determine_v and_o command_v but_o to_o do_v they_o and_o that_o they_o be_v do_v it_o be_v nothing_o necessary_a to_o know_v for_o what_o cause_n how_o &_o for_o what_o end_n they_o be_v do_v wherefore_o let_v it_o be_v thy_o care_n to_o do_v so_o much_o of_o obedience_n as_o thou_o be_v bind_v unto_o and_o know_v thou_o that_o it_o appertain_v not_o to_o the_o subject_n to_o inquire_v what_o end_n the_o superior_n have_v propose_v unto_o themselves_o in_o their_o office_n if_o the_o patriarch_n abraham_n have_v demand_v of_o god_n for_o what_o cause_n he_o will_v have_v he_o sacrifice_v his_o son_n isaac_n upon_o who_o rely_v the_o benediction_n of_o nation_n &_o many_o other_o promise_v former_o make_v his_o obedience_n have_v not_o be_v so_o commendable_a neither_o have_v he_o merit_v so_o much_o as_o he_o do_v by_o simple_o obey_v 7._o the_o true_o they_o regard_v not_o o_o fraud_n &_o deceit_n what_o have_v charity_n common_a with_o learning_n and_o riches_n as_o if_o a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o rich_a or_o learned_a or_o well_o apparel_v be_v not_o to_o be_v love_v charity_n have_v in_o the_o first_o place_n a_o eye_n to_o i_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n love_v all_o in_o i_o but_o there_o be_v another_o misery_n more_o to_o be_v pity_v that_o some_o do_v therefore_o love_v other_o because_o they_o have_v the_o same_o complexion_n of_o nature_n and_o of_o blood_n with_o they_o this_o be_v not_o charity_n but_o a_o carnal_a affection_n a_o enemy_n to_o true_a charity_n charity_n dilate_v itself_o far_o more_o wide_a for_o it_o extend_v
occasion_n of_o sin_v another_o while_n by_o give_v they_o hart_n and_o courage_n to_o shake_v off_o tentation_n at_o another_o time_n by_o avert_v their_o desire_n from_o hurtful_a thing_n and_o now_o what_o law_n command_v or_o permit_v that_o evil_o shall_v be_v render_v for_o good_a what_o wild_a beast_n be_v so_o cruel_a that_o will_v go_v about_o to_o hurt_v his_o benefactor_n if_o ingratitude_n alone_o be_v worse_a than_o a_o wild_a beast_n because_o it_o repay_v the_o benefactor_n with_o ill_a if_o the_o forget_v of_o benefit_n be_v a_o thing_n infamous_a and_o worthy_a of_o reprehension_n what_o will_v it_o be_v to_o offend_v the_o benefactor_n there_o have_v be_v see_v many_o religious_a who_o at_o the_o time_n of_o their_o death_n have_v much_o lament_v their_o own_o ingratitude_n and_o have_v make_v a_o firm_a purpose_n that_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v their_o hap_n to_o recover_v they_o will_v be_v most_o thankful_a and_o will_v be_v most_o diligent_a in_o serve_v write_v of_o the_o wiseman_n sorrow_n have_v killâ—_n many_o not_o only_o by_o a_o corporal_a death_n but_o by_o a_o spiritual_a also_o and_o patience_n be_v a_o virtue_n that_o temper_v &_o moderate_v the_o grief_n and_o heavyne_n that_o be_v occasion_v by_o tribulation_n conserve_v and_o arm_v reason_n that_o she_o be_v not_o put_v from_o her_o stand_n and_o overthrow_v by_o the_o
