grace_n either_o in_o public_a or_o private_a if_o we_o neglect_v any_o one_o of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n we_o shall_v soon_o find_v dullness_n and_o deadness_n come_v upon_o we_o for_o this_o be_v certain_a the_o infinite_a wise_a god_n have_v appoint_v no_o one_o mean_v of_o grace_n in_o vain_a and_o so_o natural_o dull_a and_o dead_a be_v our_o heart_n that_o there_o be_v not_o one_o of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n but_o we_o need_v it_o therefore_o if_o we_o neglect_v any_o of_o the_o mean_n if_o we_o attend_v public_a ordinance_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n be_v negligent_a in_o private_a prayer_n read_v the_o word_n meditate_v of_o it_o and_o self-examination_n this_o may_v be_v one_o cause_n of_o deadness_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n if_o we_o use_v private_a mean_n as_o prayer_n meditation_n and_o the_o like_a if_o we_o neglect_v public_a mean_n or_o any_o of_o the_o ordinance_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v if_o we_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o neglect_v the_o sacrament_n or_o any_o one_o institute_v mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o our_o help_n that_o may_v bring_v this_o deadness_n on_o we_o for_o it_o be_v certain_a we_o need_v all_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o more_o we_o come_v to_o understand_v our_o own_o heart_n the_o more_o we_o be_v concern_v about_o our_o spiritual_a state_n the_o more_o we_o shall_v see_v our_o need_n of_o all_o the_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o our_o help_n and_o quicken_a and_o if_o we_o consult_v our_o own_o experience_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o when_o we_o be_v most_o remiss_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n then_o do_v spiritual_a deadness_n and_o dullness_n come_v upon_o we_o 4._o another_o cause_n of_o this_o spiritual_a dullness_n and_o deadness_n be_v some_o secret_a corruption_n that_o we_o indulge_v in_o ourselves_o exhort_v one_o another_o 3.13_o heb._n 3.13_o say_v the_o apostle_n lest_o any_o of_o you_o be_v harden_v through_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_n sin_n be_v a_o deceitful_a thing_n and_o will_v harden_v the_o heart_n any_o sin_n connive_v at_o belove_v and_o entertain_v will_v harden_v the_o heart_n when_o that_o when_o the_o spirit_n withdraw_v and_o retire_v spiritual_a dullness_n and_o deadness_n must_v needs_o follow_v 5._o another_o great_a cause_n of_o this_o spiritural_a dullness_n and_o deadness_n that_o come_v upon_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v inordinate_a affection_n to_o earthly_a thing_n the_o strength_n of_o the_o affection_n can_v go_v forth_o two_o way_n at_o once_o therefore_o if_o the_o affection_n be_v carry_v out_o violent_o impetuous_o and_o beyond_o their_o due_a bound_n towards_o earthly_a thing_n they_o can_v be_v carry_v out_o with_o that_o vigour_n towards_o god_n and_o the_o way_n of_o god_n as_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v it_o be_v the_o violence_n and_o impetuousness_n of_o our_o affection_n unto_o other_o thing_n that_o put_v such_o a_o damp_n inlargement_n in_o duty_n because_o we_o have_v find_v some_o affection_n towards_o god_n we_o think_v we_o can_v command_v the_o same_o quickening_n the_o same_o inlargement_n the_o same_o affection_n at_o our_o pleasure_n now_o when_o we_o rest_v in_o what_o we_o have_v already_o receive_v and_o think_v we_o have_v quicken_a and_o enlargement_n at_o command_n this_o cause_v the_o spirit_n to_o withdraw_v from_o we_o and_o then_o we_o soon_o fall_v into_o spiritual_a deadness_n and_o dullness_n these_o be_v usual_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o spiritual_a deadness_n and_o dullness_n that_o come_v upon_o the_o saint_n now_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o give_v way_n to_o this_o spiritual_a deadness_n and_o dullness_n but_o to_o pray_v and_o strive_v much_o against_o it_o holy_a soul_n the_o more_o grace_n they_o have_v the_o more_o sensible_a they_o be_v of_o this_o spiritual_a deadness_n
