this_o art_n of_o art_n what_o i_o have_v receive_v i_o purpose_v to_o deliver_v to_o other_o through_o his_o help_n who_o be_v the_o author_n thereof_o and_o sure_o this_o knowledge_n be_v only_o worthy_a of_o a_o man_n other_o knowledge_n except_o they_o serve_v this_o they_o be_v but_o weariness_n and_o vanity_n for_o man_n be_v as_o miserable_a and_o sometime_o more_o when_o he_o have_v get_v their_o perfection_n as_o when_o he_o enter_v into_o their_o beginning_n and_o becauseit_n give_v a_o great_a light_n to_o man_n reparation_n to_o know_v how_o he_o come_v to_o have_v need_n of_o it_o and_o because_o it_o concern_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o creator_n to_o show_v that_o at_o first_o he_o create_v not_o misery_n and_o corruption_n therefore_o most_o fit_o do_v this_o doctrine_n begin_v with_o the_o first_o estate_n of_o man_n and_o the_o loss_n thereof_o even_o a_o create_a perfection_n and_o a_o purchase_a corruption_n a_o learning_n which_o all_o philosophy_n can_v never_o reach_v for_o she_o be_v the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o can_v tell_v the_o beginning_n of_o her_o own_o father_n for_o man_n be_v before_o she_o be_v yea_o man_n be_v lose_v before_o she_o be_v find_v and_o so_o she_o which_o be_v since_o corruption_n can_v tell_v how_o that_o corruption_n come_v which_o be_v before_o she_o much_o less_o can_v she_o speak_v of_o that_o perfection_n which_o be_v again_o before_o this_o corruption_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v bid_v she_o find_v we_o and_o not_o know_v the_o cause_n she_o can_v never_o find_v the_o cure_n and_o therefore_o as_o she_o find_v we_o so_o she_o leave_v we_o miserable_a the_o art_n of_o happiness_n the_o second_o part._n which_o particular_o set_v forth_o the_o happiness_n of_o man_n and_o the_o restore_n of_o it_o when_o it_o be_v lose_v chap._n i._o of_o the_o creator_n and_o the_o creation_n and_o the_o purpose_n of_o the_o creator_n in_o the_o creation_n the_o creator_n be_v the_o begin_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o therefore_o must_v he_o needs_o be_v without_o beginning_n for_o from_o the_o thing_n which_o have_v their_o beginning_n of_o he_o himself_o can_v take_v beginning_n neither_o can_v he_o be_v his_o own_o beginning_n for_o that_o be_v to_o say_v he_o be_v before_o he_o be_v but_o god_n be_v a_o eternal_a essence_n that_o by_o himself_o uphold_v himself_o and_o all_o thing_n else_o for_o all_o other_o thing_n have_v no_o be_v of_o their_o own_o but_o they_o borrow_v their_o be_v from_o he_o and_o in_o he_o be_v their_o foundation_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n may_v he_o alone_o right_o because_o alone_o original_o say_v i_o be_o and_o as_o he_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o beginning_n from_o which_o all_o thing_n flow_v so_o be_v he_o the_o end_n to_o which_o all_o thing_n return_v either_o by_o their_o own_o will_n conform_v to_o his_o will_n or_o by_o the_o overruling_a of_o his_o power_n which_o subdue_v the_o unwilling_a to_o his_o will_n and_o thus_o must_v it_o needs_o be_v for_o the_o creator_n be_v his_o own_o end_n in_o his_o creation_n and_o do_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o if_o we_o allow_v not_o a_o creator_n we_o confess_v no_o author_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o see_v but_o either_o we_o make_v they_o eternal_a which_o be_v to_o make_v mean_a god_n and_o to_o deny_v the_o more_o excellent_a or_o we_o frame_v some_o imagination_n of_o our_o own_o to_o be_v their_o beginning_n which_o shall_v never_o fit_v with_o they_o so_o well_o as_o a_o wise_a powerful_a and_o eternal_a spirit_n and_o last_o we_o rob_v man_n soul_n of_o a_o true_a rest_n &_o happiness_n for_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n have_v not_o some_o sovereign_a spirit_n to_o give_v it_o eternal_a bliss_n than_o be_v miserable_a man_n shut_v up_o unto_o this_o present_a life_n as_o unto_o his_o sovereign_a good_a into_o which_o a_o wise_a &_o good_a man_n will_v never_o re-enter_v if_o he_o be_v once_o well_o discharge_v of_o it_o let_v we_o then_o seek_v a_o god_n high_a than_o these_o visible_a thing_n and_o a_o happiness_n high_o than_o these_o miserable_a thing_n and_o let_v we_o not_o reason_n with_o the_o brutish_a sensualist_n he_o be_v not_o a_o god_n who_o we_o can_v see_v with_o our_o eye_n but_o let_v we_o say_v with_o the_o soul_n enlighten_v he_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v a_o god_n who_o pureness_n do_v excel_v the_o gross_a capacity_n of_o bodily_a sense_n for_o the_o pure_a the_o essence_n be_v the_o more_o fit_a to_o be_v a_o god_n and_o the_o more_o pure_a the_o more_o invisible_a to_o a_o gross_a and_o carnal_a sight_n let_v we_o therefore_o believe_v the_o creator_n to_o be_v a_o most_o clear_a lightsome_a and_o glorious_a spirit_n and_o to_o be_v see_v only_o by_o spirit_n and_o body_n sublimate_v into_o a_o spiritual_a kind_n of_o be_v this_o glorious_a &_o eternal_a spirit_n manife_v himself_o to_o our_o apprehension_n in_o three_o person_n the_o print_n and_o impression_n of_o each_o person_n be_v find_v in_o every_o creature_n and_o there_o be_v a_o absolute_a necessity_n that_o every_o one_o of_o the_o three_o shall_v concur_v in_o all_o creation_n the_o first_o in_o order_n of_o consideration_n though_o there_o be_v no_o first_o in_o order_n of_o time_n be_v the_o great_a and_o infinite_a mind_n or_o understanding_n which_o beget_v a_o great_a wisdom_n thought_n or_o word_n even_o the_o first_o and_o radical_a light_n the_o almighty_a begetter_n of_o the_o second_o light_n and_o this_o person_n be_v call_v god_n the_o father_n the_o second_o be_v the_o beget_v &_o second_o light_n even_o the_o wisdom_n &_o conceivement_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o understanding_n a_o image_n &_o issue_n thereof_o and_o this_o person_n be_v call_v god_n the_o son_n the_o three_o be_v the_o virtue_n &_o power_n which_o breathe_v or_o flow_v from_o the_o god_n head_n whereby_o god_n love_v and_o enjoy_v himself_o and_o put_v in_o execution_n whatsoever_o he_o will_v have_v do_v for_o himself_o and_o this_o person_n be_v call_v god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n these_o three_o be_v one_o god_n and_o do_v so_o necessary_o join_v in_o every_o creation_n that_o without_o any_o one_o of_o they_o nothing_o can_v be_v create_v for_o how_o can_v there_o be_v any_o creation_n but_o that_o the_o mind_n or_o father_n must_v beget_v a_o wise_a purpose_n by_o wisdom_n his_o son_n &_o what_o he_o have_v purpose_v and_o project_v by_o the_o son_n he_o must_v effect_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n according_o this_o god_n who_o be_v the_o end_n of_o himself_o for_o himself_o intend_v and_o bring_v forth_o a_o creation_n to_o himself_o he_o will_v have_v glory_n and_o to_o his_o creature_n happiness_n yea_o this_o happiness_n of_o the_o creature_n shall_v be_v by_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o creator_n so_o in_o the_o glorify_v of_o god_n shall_v man_n and_o angel_n be_v glorify_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a they_o that_o will_v not_o give_v glory_n to_o god_n shall_v not_o have_v happiness_n to_o themselves_o yet_o though_o unwilling_o shall_v they_o glorify_v he_o by_o serve_v his_o justice_n in_o misery_n who_o will_v not_o serve_v his_o goodness_n in_o felicity_n to_o effect_v this_o in_o six_o day_n god_n make_v this_o great_a mass_n of_o creature_n call_v the_o world_n which_o he_o fit_v for_o the_o service_n of_o man_n and_o man_n for_o the_o service_n of_o his_o god._n now_o as_o this_o great_a frame_n come_v from_o this_o one_o god_n so_o the_o infinite_a disagreeing_n of_o several_a part_n reconcile_v to_o a_o unity_n point_n to_o some_o great_a unity_n as_o the_o cause_n of_o this_o reconciliation_n which_o can_v deserve_v to_o be_v call_v by_o no_o other_o name_n then_o by_o a_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a name_n and_o such_o a_o name_n be_v god_n again_o the_o infinite_a diversity_n of_o form_n and_o that_o large_a heap_n of_o matter_n neither_o of_o which_o be_v before_o and_o of_o which_o it_o be_v alike_o easy_a to_o the_o creator_n to_o make_v matter_n as_o form_n direct_v our_o eye_n to_o some_o great_a wisdom_n &_o power_n which_o can_v both_o invent_v and_o produce_v they_o yea_o more_fw-it near_o the_o drop_n and_o stream_n of_o wisdom_n pour_v into_o the_o creature_n in_o their_o several_a instinct_n and_o into_o man_n with_o his_o soul_n plain_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v some_o spring_n of_o infinite_a wisdom_n from_o which_o these_o rivulet_n may_v flow_v and_o some_o infinite_a power_n which_o can_v actuate_v they_o into_o the_o creature_n and_o if_o so_o then_o necessary_o must_v we_o also_o allow_v some_o pure_a and_o infinite_a essence_n
truth_n which_o usual_o by_o multitude_n be_v most_o forsake_a there_o be_v a_o sure_a say_n that_o a_o competent_a portion_n fit_a to_o defend_v we_o from_o hunger_n and_o nakedness_n that_o be_v a_o measure_n able_a to_o serve_v and_o satisfy_v our_o natural_a use_n have_v attain_a the_o fullness_n of_o the_o substantial_a goodness_n thereof_o we_o be_v travayl_v through_o this_o world_n to_o death_n if_o we_o have_v enough_o to_o bear_v our_o necessary_a charge_n by_o the_o way_n how_o be_v not_o superfluity_n rather_o a_o burden_n then_o a_o comfort_n to_o a_o travayler_n whatsoever_o be_v beyond_o our_o use_n we_o can_v but_o behold_v with_o our_o eye_n or_o put_v a_o vain_a confidence_n in_o it_o which_o often_o have_v deceive_v those_o that_o trust_v in_o it_o for_o even_o that_o which_o they_o have_v put_v their_o trust_n in_o have_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o have_v betray_v they_o therefore_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o care_n and_o fear_n as_o common_o they_o do_v shall_v accompany_v abundance_n as_o well_o as_o pride_n and_o confidence_n and_o if_o so_o then_o what_o a_o motley_n and_o minggled_a happiness_n arise_v from_o a_o doubtful_a and_o careful_a superfluity_n and_o sure_o very_o common_o and_o very_o just_o the_o owner_n of_o this_o excess_n be_v call_v miserable_a for_o beside_o that_o it_o often_o deliver_v they_o up_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o misery_n it_o make_v they_o most_o wretched_a in_o themselves_o because_o most_o wretched_a to_o themselves_o there_o be_v a_o beastly_a kindred_n between_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n &_o money_n and_o this_o kindred_n beget_v such_o a_o love_n that_o the_o heart_n will_v go_v near_o to_o starve_v itself_o before_o it_o will_v part_v from_o its_o most_o belove_a object_n yea_o money_n beget_v the_o love_n of_o money_n and_o stir_v up_o the_o affection_n in_o such_o a_o vehemency_n towards_o it_o that_o pos_fw-mi session_n do_v inflame_v the_o desire_n and_o not_o satisfy_v it_o now_o what_o can_v give_v rest_n to_o such_o a_o miserable_a soul_n when_o obtain_n which_o in_o other_o thing_n give_v some_o though_o short_a satisfaction_n yet_o to_o this_o man_n it_o give_v new_a appetite_n far_a motion_n &_o a_o long_a business_n yet_o this_o abundance_n thus_o bring_v forth_o by_o the_o midwifery_a of_o torment_n and_o perplexity_n many_o time_n fly_v away_o like_o a_o eagle_n by_o the_o follow_a generation_n folly_n or_o luxury_n and_o this_o certain_o be_v a_o great_a vanity_n and_o wretchedness_n of_o riches_n that_o they_o be_v so_o often_o leave_v to_o a_o foolish_a son_n who_o be_v less_o kin_n to_o a_o true_a wise_a man_n than_o a_o honest_a stranger_n that_o sometime_o they_o be_v leave_v to_o a_o son_n that_o be_v no_o son_n and_o sometime_o leave_v and_o there_o be_v not_o a_o second_o to_o enjoy_v they_o howsoever_o leave_v they_o must_v be_v even_o all_o thing_n wherein_o thou_o have_v show_v thyself_o wise_a and_o industrious_a and_o that_o to_o some_o who_o labour_v not_o in_o they_o to_o some_o who_o thou_o know_v not_o after_o two_o or_o three_o generation_n &_o therefore_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o shall_v be_v wise_a or_o foolish_a whether_o they_o shall_v perform_v thy_o purpose_n and_o desire_n with_o thy_o substance_n yea_o whether_o they_o shall_v turn_v it_o into_o the_o price_n of_o a_o whore_n or_o a_o dog_n which_o both_o be_v a_o abomination_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o wisdom_n but_o if_o riches_n may_v escape_v all_o this_o succeed_a misery_n yet_o be_v not_o the_o present_a possessor_n of_o they_o happy_a the_o common_a misery_n of_o man_n lay_v claim_v to_o all_o and_o will_v not_o be_v buy_v out_o by_o riches_n therefore_o the_o rich_a man_n shall_v meet_v with_o cross_n &_o loss_n in_o friend_n or_o estate_n he_o shall_v be_v sick_a in_o mind_n and_o sick_a in_o body_n yea_o fullness_n itself_o shall_v make_v he_o sick_a in_o both_o and_o if_o he_o may_v escape_v all_o this_o yet_o riches_n which_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o his_o body_n can_v make_v his_o soul_n happy_a which_o be_v better_o than_o the_o body_n for_o far_o be_v it_o from_o the_o soul_n to_o find_v her_o happiness_n in_o her_o servant_n servant_n especial_o such_o a_o fugitive_a vagabond_n &_o uncertain_a servant_n these_o massy_a and_o gross_a riches_n be_v too_o course_n a_o object_n for_o a_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a essence_n they_o carry_v no_o likeness_n or_o proportion_n unto_o it_o and_o therefore_o can_v give_v the_o soul_n no_o addition_n of_o her_o natural_a pleasure_n or_o profit_n much_o less_o of_o her_o perfect_a happiness_n wherein_o she_o must_v have_v a_o part_n so_o far_o great_a than_o the_o body_n as_o she_o be_v more_o excellent_a than_o it_o chap._n v._o of_o knowledge_n but_o some_o moral_a vizard_n will_v tell_v i_o that_o knowledge_n have_v some_o high_a privilege_n above_o misery_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o can_v give_v happiness_n to_o this_o in_o spite_n of_o it_o unhappy_a life_n indeed_o knowledge_n be_v a_o dim_a light_n which_o be_v better_o than_o very_a darkness_n it_o have_v a_o excellency_n as_o dawn_v above_o night_n but_o though_o it_o be_v better_a it_o be_v not_o that_o chief_a good_a which_o can_v make_v we_o happy_a it_o may_v indeed_o be_v use_v as_o a_o instrument_n for_o the_o discovery_n of_o happiness_n though_o seldom_o it_o be_v put_v to_o that_o use_n but_o in_o itself_o neither_o in_o any_o thing_n create_v shall_v it_o ever_o be_v able_a to_o discover_v it_o yea_o rather_o it_o shall_v find_v in_o itself_o and_o in_o all_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n many_o imperfection_n and_o fayling_n of_o those_o just_a condition_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v find_v in_o man_n sovereign_a good_a our_o knowledge_n be_v but_o of_o a_o short_a reach_n the_o thing_n beyond_o it_o be_v infinite_o more_o than_o the_o thing_n on_o this_o side_n of_o it_o therefore_o when_o knowledge_n be_v come_v to_o a_o suppose_a perfection_n a_o special_a quality_n of_o it_o be_v to_o know_v itself_o to_o be_v imperfect_a even_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o it_o it_o search_v by_o piecemeal_o part_n after_o part_n as_o one_o that_o read_v a_o great_a volume_n in_o the_o dark_a with_o a_o glow-worm_n which_o show_v he_o but_o letter_n after_o letter_n so_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n go_v to_o a_o very_a little_a profit_n hence_o be_v our_o science_n but_o many_o little_n piece_v together_o while_o the_o great_a body_n of_o truth_n &_o wisdom_n stand_v beyond_o our_o sight_n and_o by_o the_o incomprehensiblenesse_n thereof_o accuse_v our_o knowledge_n even_o to_o itself_o of_o weakness_n as_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o sun_n do_v our_o eye_n by_o dazzle_v they_o and_o this_o magnify_v little_a knowledge_n which_o we_o have_v what_o extraordinary_a vantage_n do_v it_o bring_v unto_o man_n sure_o it_o often_o bestow_v vexation_n on_o the_o owner_n of_o it_o and_o by_o increase_v increase_v sorrow_n for_o to_o the_o great_a knowledge_n the_o vanity_n and_o misery_n of_o man_n do_v present_v itself_o in_o a_o most_o full_a appearance_n yea_o great_a knowledge_n usual_o take_v up_o aforehand_o evil_n to_o come_v and_o make_v they_o present_a hence_o it_o be_v that_o many_o learned_a philosopher_n have_v vex_v their_o life_n with_o the_o consideration_n of_o their_o death_n which_o many_o ignorant_a and_o sturdy_a clown_n without_o premeditation_n have_v under-taken_a with_o more_o ease_n as_o miss_v the_o trouble_n of_o anticipation_n &_o have_v dispatch_v with_o less_o business_n and_o wrestle_v as_o be_v hood-winked_n with_o a_o blind_a contentment_n to_o do_v as_o their_o father_n have_v do_v before_o they_o for_o this_o cause_n also_o some_o of_o our_o great_a knower_n have_v wink_v against_o knowledge_n and_o have_v desire_v that_o ignorance_n shall_v cozen_v they_o of_o their_o grief_n to_o which_o knowledge_n will_v continual_o and_o loud_o awake_v they_o sure_o when_o the_o knowledge_n of_o man_n have_v discover_v throughout_o this_o frame_n of_o the_o world_n a_o excellent_a wisdom_n and_o order_n when_o it_o see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o excellent_a beauty_n in_o the_o face_n of_o goodness_n yea_o some_o excellence_n in_o knowledge_n itself_o how_o must_v not_o this_o need_v torment_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o knower_n while_o the_o same_o knowledge_n see_v also_o the_o action_n of_o mankind_n to_o run_v so_o mad_o and_o confuse_o while_o it_o see_v justice_n or_o at_o least_o power_n tread_v upon_o the_o face_n of_o goodness_n and_o exalt_v wickedness_n while_o it_o see_v a_o undistinguish_a chance_n to_o come_v unto_o all_o and_o final_o while_o knowledge_n see_v knowledge_n despise_v and_o yet_o not_o able_a to_o help_v itself_o not_o any_o of_o those_o evil_n which_o it_o see_v certain_o these_o thing_n be_v a_o vexation_n of_o mind_n to_o the_o man_n
wherein_o this_o infinite_a wisdom_n &_o power_n may_v dwell_v which_o purity_n chief_o excel_v in_o a_o spirit_n and_o to_o such_o a_o spirit_n can_v agree_v no_o other_o but_o the_o high_a name_n of_o god_n thus_o the_o thing_n seal_v bear_v the_o image_n of_o the_o seal_n teach_v we_o the_o seal_n even_o these_o visible_a creature_n bear_v the_o impression_n of_o the_o deity_n represent_v to_o we_o the_o same_o deity_n as_o their_o cause_n and_o beginning_n and_o in_o their_o dumb_a language_n they_o preach_v unto_o we_o their_o original_n the_o world_n thus_o trim_v up_o with_o the_o variety_n of_o innumerable_a thing_n both_o for_o use_v and_o ornament_n as_o a_o royal_a palace_n for_o some_o great_a prince_n man_n though_o now_o a_o contemptible_a &_o wretched_a thing_n be_v then_o think_v a_o fit_a owner_n and_o commander_n of_o so_o glorious_a a_o creation_n and_o this_o not_o without_o order_n for_o though_o by_o his_o body_n he_o be_v of_o kin_n to_o the_o earth_n yet_o his_o soul_n be_v of_o kin_n to_o the_o deity_n be_v a_o spirit_n breathe_v into_o man_n by_o the_o father_n of_o spirit_n so_o glory_n and_o humility_n be_v marry_v together_o in_o man_n at_o his_o first_o creation_n the_o issue_n whereof_o shall_v still_o be_v continue_v even_o apprehension_n of_o a_o excellent_a soul_n to_o keep_v we_o from_o sink_v into_o the_o baseness_n of_o
