the_o devil_n they_o care_v not_o so_o they_o may_v have_v money_n and_o spoil_n such_o as_o these_o can_v look_v for_o no_o good_a success_n in_o the_o battle_n god_n forbid_v that_o any_o protestant_a soldier_n shall_v be_v of_o this_o mercenary_a mind_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o i_o advise_v all_o godly_a soldier_n to_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n to_o be_v thorough_o persuade_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o their_o cause_n that_o so_o that_o good_a god_n and_o mighty_a defender_n of_o right_n may_v stand_v for_o they_o and_o that_o they_o may_v stand_v to_o he_o with_o true_a courage_n in_o the_o field_n and_o yet_o again_o i_o advise_v a_o gracious_a soldier_n to_o judge_v the_o best_a of_o the_o cause_n if_o by_o those_o occasion_n which_o i_o have_v name_v or_o the_o like_a he_o can_v never_o find_v the_o depth_n of_o it_o for_o he_o must_v in_o no_o wise_n contest_v with_o his_o governor_n about_o the_o cause_n by_o stand_v upon_o nice_a term_n shift_n and_o evasion_n thus_o may_v unwilling_a soldier_n find_v store_n of_o start_a hole_n to_o avoid_v all_o skirmish_n to_o conclude_v a_o zion_n soldier_n must_v be_v zealous_a for_o a_o good_a cause_n and_o not_o jealous_a of_o a_o good_a prince_n he_o must_v use_v all_o good_a inquisition_n and_o avoid_v all_o evil_a suspicion_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o second_o worthy_a sink_n namely_o a_o worthy_a cause_n three_o since_o all_o man_n though_o virtuous_a courage_n 3._o worthy_a courage_n godly_a and_o prudent_a be_v not_o endue_v with_o courage_n fit_a for_o war_n for_o courage_n be_v a_o special_a gift_n of_o god_n it_o behove_v a_o true_a christian_n to_o consider_v how_o god_n have_v stir_v he_o up_o that_o way_n and_o not_o offer_v himself_o to_o war_n upon_o a_o sudden_a heat_n or_o mood_n in_o ever_o so_o good_a a_o cause_n but_o stay_v till_o he_o find_v that_o the_o god_n of_o battle_n have_v bestow_v a_o firm_a courageous_a heart_n upon_o he_o without_o which_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v small_a good_a nay_o rather_o much_o harm_n faint_a heart_n may_v soon_o discomfort_v other_o then_o perform_v any_o acceptable_a service_n at_o all_o yet_o this_o i_o say_v in_o the_o case_n of_o courage_n when_o any_o go_v to_o war_n voluntary_o upon_o a_o deceive_a heart_n and_o then_o find_v his_o courage_n faint_a or_o when_o any_o that_o be_v press_v to_o war_n by_o his_o prince_n be_v oppress_v with_o fear_n of_o the_o enemy_n then_o let_v he_o do_v that_o to_o obtain_v courage_n which_o man_n ought_v to_o do_v for_o obtain_v wisdom_n 1.17_o jam._n 1.17_o both_o these_o descend_v from_o the_o father_n of_o light_n 1.5_o jam._n 1.5_o therefore_o as_o saint_n james_n say_v if_o man_n lack_v wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n which_o give_v to_o all_o man_n liberal_o and_o reproach_v no_o man_n so_o say_v i_o if_o any_o christian_a soldier_n want_v courage_n let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n in_o faith_n and_o for_o his_o glory_n not_o for_o by_o and_o bad_a respect_n and_o if_o than_o our_o most_o wise_a god_n do_v not_o vouchsafe_v upon_o earnest_a petition_n to_o bestow_v this_o gift_n upon_o he_o sure_o he_o shall_v do_v well_o to_o confess_v his_o faintness_n and_o then_o such_o gracious_a captain_n as_o shall_v have_v full_a notice_n thereof_o shall_v do_v well_o also_o to_o send_v he_o back_o for_o some_o other_o employment_n at_o home_n i_o make_v no_o way_n here_o for_o dissembler_n to_o wind_n out_o of_o their_o prince_n service_n our_o god_n can_v give_v holy_a captain_n discern_v spirit_n to_o judge_v of_o thing_n in_o wisdom_n but_o i_o speak_v of_o such_o soldier_n who_o dastardly_a fear_n be_v apparent_o see_v here_o i_o suppose_v that_o old_a rule_n of_o our_o good_a god_n be_v to_o be_v remember_v and_o practise_v for_o ever_o which_o say_v let_v the_o officer_n speak_v unto_o the_o people_n 20.8_o deut._n 20.8_o and_o say_v whosoever_o be_v fearful_a and_o fainthearted_a let_v he_o go_v and_o return_v unto_o his_o house_n lest_o his_o brethren_n heart_n faint_v as_o well_o as_o his_o heart_n yet_o i_o determine_v nothing_o hereof_o but_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o godly_a wisdom_n of_o religious_a captain_n to_o go_v forward_o now_o in_o speak_v more_o full_o of_o courage_n i_o must_v put_v you_o in_o mind_n that_o this_o courage_n which_o here_o i_o write_v of_o have_v always_o a_o sort_n as_o if_o the_o man_n be_v never_o to_o return_v to_o his_o short_a home_n but_o to_o go_v as_o our_o phrase_n of_o speech_n be_v to_o his_o long_a home_n a_o heart_n a_o soul_n prepare_v to_o leave_v all_o in_o all_o and_o to_o bear_v all_o brunt_n for_o christ_n his_o sake_n when_o the_o person_n of_o a_o soldier_n be_v once_o accept_v of_o his_o god_n in_o that_o most_o worthy_a son_n of_o he_o that_o lamb_n i_o say_v who_o be_v worthy_a to_o receive_v power_n and_o riches_n and_o wisdom_n 5.12_o reu._n 5.12_o and_o strength_n and_o glory_n and_o praise_n then_o with_o this_o resolution_n which_o be_v unseperable_a from_o that_o acceptance_n the_o zion_n soldier_n defi_v all_o god_n enemy_n despise_v all_o danger_n and_o after_o a_o heavenly_a manner_n deni_v all_o friend_n and_o himself_o also_o for_o christ_n sake_n then_o he_o say_v life_n i_o look_v not_o for_o thy_o continuance_n death_n i_o fear_v not_o thy_o sting_n wife_n father_n mother_n son_n daughter_n brother_n sister_n friend_n
