they_o what_o great_a thing_n shall_v they_o do_v if_o they_o also_o be_v servant_n shall_v suffer_v somewhat_o for_o their_o lord_n 6._o a_o religious_a man_n who_o be_v afraid_a to_o suffer_v any_o thing_n lose_v his_o reward_n and_o because_o a_o man_n must_v needs_o suffer_v many_o thing_n if_o the_o labour_n and_o affliction_n be_v double_v it_o make_v the_o burden_n the_o more_o intolerable_a other_o make_v light_a esteem_n of_o religion_n their_o mother_n for_o that_o they_o think_v themselves_o not_o bind_v to_o their_o religion_n but_o their_o religion_n to_o they_o but_o they_o be_v deceive_v for_o if_o they_o examine_v the_o matter_n well_o they_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o have_v receyve_v very_o many_o benefit_n of_o religion_n and_o religion_n none_o at_o all_o by_o they_o for_o to_o be_v religious_a and_o god_n feruant_fw-la be_v so_o noble_a a_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o of_o religion_n as_o it_o ought_v worthy_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o all_o the_o good_a work_n that_o be_v do_v for_o religion_n for_o there_o be_v not_o any_o earthly_a dignity_n in_o the_o world_n that_o may_v enter_v into_o comparison_n with_o the_o dignity_n of_o religious_a life_n it_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o a_o base_a and_o unthankeful_a mind_n if_o a_o religious_a person_n busy_v himself_o rather_o in_o think_v upon_o the_o commodity_n that_o he_o have_v bring_v to_o religion_n than_o those_o that_o he_o have_v receyve_v from_o it_o 7._o again_o that_o religious_a man_n displease_v i_o not_o a_o little_a who_o care_v not_o how_o he_o employ_v the_o talon_n he_o have_v receyve_v of_o i_o for_o by_o that_o he_o manife_v what_o small_a reckon_n he_o make_v of_o it_o and_o have_v no_o will_n to_o satisfy_v his_o office_n when_o he_o may_v &_o be_v able_a how_o many_o be_v there_o who_o be_v able_a to_o my_o great_a pleasure_n do_v undergo_v some_o exercise_n for_o the_o good_a and_o help_a of_o soul_n but_o because_o they_o see_v they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v they_o with_o so_o great_a applause_n as_o some_o other_o can_v they_o give_v they_o clean_o over_o be_v not_o this_o a_o ambitious_a pride_n be_v not_o this_o to_o hide_v the_o talon_n under_o ground_n which_o i_o give_v he_o to_o make_v his_o gain_n therewith_o i_o can_v be_v ignorant_a what_o be_v good_a and_o healthful_a for_o every_o one_o and_o therefore_o i_o give_v five_o talent_n to_o some_o two_o to_o other_o &_o but_o one_o to_o another_o and_o though_o to_o negotiate_v with_o one_o talon_n do_v not_o carry_v so_o great_a applause_n and_o credit_n among_o man_n as_o to_o negotiate_v and_o traffic_v with_o five_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o i_o for_o i_o consider_v not_o how_o much_o every_o one_o negotiate_v but_o how_o well_o and_o careful_o and_o if_o to_o negotiate_v with_o the_o help_n of_o many_o talent_n shall_v redound_v to_o the_o soul_n good_a of_o many_o and_o to_o the_o great_a glory_n of_o my_o name_n it_o will_v be_v a_o work_n worthy_a of_o commendation_n 8._o but_o this_o be_v that_o which_o i_o find_v fault_n withal_o that_o many_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o have_v many_o talent_n and_o much_o negotiation_n that_o they_o may_v be_v the_o more_o admire_v at_o and_o the_o better_o esteem_v of_o man_n while_o to_o i_o the_o author_n of_o all_o good_a they_o leave_v either_o no_o place_n at_o all_o or_o very_o little_a my_o belove_a servant_n do_v not_o so_o at_o other_o time_n who_o ascribe_v the_o imperfection_n and_o lapse_n to_o themselves_o and_o the_o fruit_n of_o their_o good_a work_n to_o i_o &_o that_o they_o may_v transfer_v the_o praise_n and_o glory_n of_o all_o their_o labour_n to_o i_o they_o will_v be_v say_v to_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n for_o the_o commendation_n of_o a_o excellent_a work_n return_v not_o to_o the_o instrument_n that_o wrought_v it_o but_o to_o the_o craftesman_n himself_o 9_o son_n of_o the_o contempt_n of_o thy_o vocation_n or_o religious_a profession_n there_o grow_v another_o evil_a and_o that_o be_v a_o negligence_n or_o carelessness_n of_o attain_v the_o end_n of_o thy_o vocation_n and_o a_o neglect_n of_o observe_v the_o rule_n of_o thy_o proper_a institute_n and_o this_o vice_n offend_v i_o so_o high_o as_o i_o be_o force_v even_o to_o punish_v such_o person_n in_o this_o present_a life_n i_o abundant_o afford_v they_o health_n and_o strength_n of_o body_n wit_n and_o all_o help_v both_o natural_a &_o spiritual_a that_o they_o may_v cheerful_o hold_v on_o in_o the_o course_n of_o virtue_n which_o they_o have_v begin_v and_o at_o length_n come_v to_o their_o prefix_a end_n and_o if_o they_o by_o neglect_v and_o contemn_v all_o this_o reap_v no_o fruit_n of_o their_o good_a work_n at_o all_o what_o marvel_n though_o like_a unto_o the_o accurse_a figtree_n that_o do_v indeed_o bear_v leaf_n but_o yet_o no_o fruit_n at_o all_o they_o sometime_o decay_v and_o wither_v away_o the_o tree_n that_o i_o have_v plant_v in_o a_o religious_a garden_n ought_v continual_o to_o yield_v the_o fruit_n of_o good_a work_n else_o as_o unprofitable_a they_o be_v to_o be_v accurse_v and_o be_v once_o wither_v be_v to_o be_v throw_v into_o hell_n fire_n for_o whosoever_o
to_o be_v a_o ornament_n to_o a_o religious_a man_n whereas_o contrariwise_o human_a respect_n and_o all_o temporal_a commodity_n be_v to_o be_v tread_v under_o his_o foot_n and_o contemn_v he_o then_o who_o leave_v those_o for_o these_o do_v necessary_o put_v virtue_n under_o a_o religious_a man_n foot_n and_o raise_v humane_a respect_n upon_o his_o head_n 9_o again_o he_o that_o more_o desirous_a of_o perfection_n can_v be_v discommend_v can_v there_o any_o great_a glory_n befall_v he_o in_o this_o life_n then_o if_o this_o may_v be_v affirm_v &_o say_v of_o he_o and_o what_o new_a thing_n can_v happen_v to_o a_o religious_a man_n if_o he_o be_v contemn_v of_o the_o world_n do_v he_o expect_v any_o reward_n or_o recompense_v from_o it_o or_o be_v he_o afraid_a lest_o it_o will_v censure_v he_o by_o a_o condemnation_n it_o make_v no_o matter_n whether_o a_o religious_a man_n be_v love_v or_o hate_v of_o the_o world_n but_o it_o avayl_v much_o if_o he_o be_v dear_a to_o i_o 10._o to_o conclude_v other_o forbear_v to_o tread_v this_o way_n of_o perfection_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o repugnance_n that_o man_n nature_n find_v in_o practise_v the_o mean_n and_o for_o the_o difficulty_n that_o the_o body_n make_v trial_n of_o in_o trace_v the_o same_o way_n but_o these_o man_n miss_v the_o mark_n for_o to_o be_v a_o true_a religious_a man_n or_o to_o walk_v on_o to_o perfection_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o mortify_v the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o perturbation_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o therefore_o if_o thou_o forbear_v the_o exercise_n of_o virtue_n lest_o thou_o incommodate_v or_o hurt_v thy_o body_n thou_o love_v thyself_o too_o sensual_o neither_o do_v i_o see_v what_o difference_n there_o be_v between_o thou_o and_o a_o delicate_a secular_a person_n remember_v son_n that_o these_o be_v not_o the_o promise_n thou_o make_v at_o thy_o entrance_n to_o religion_n for_o than_o thou_o do_v purpose_n with_o thyself_o to_o suffer_v many_o thing_n for_o i_o to_o chastise_v thy_o body_n to_o serve_v i_o and_o for_o love_n of_o religious_a perfection_n to_o deprive_v and_o spoil_v thyself_o of_o all_o humane_a consolation_n that_o a_o good_a religious_a man_n must_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o whatsoever_o degree_n of_o perfection_n but_o must_v labour_v and_o aspire_v to_o a_o great_a chap._n xvi_o son_n those_o religious_a man_n do_v not_o satisfy_v i_o that_o aspire_v to_o a_o mean_a degree_n of_o religious_a perfection_n unless_o they_o also_o aim_v at_o the_o high_a for_o so_o i_o declare_v unto_o my_o disciple_n when_o i_o exhort_v they_o to_o be_v perfect_a not_o as_o the_o patriarck_n and_o prophet_n be_v nor_o as_o the_o seraphim_n and_o other_o the_o angel_n but_o as_o my_o father_n in_o heaven_n o_o how_o do_v that_o religious_a person_n please_v i_o who_o like_o the_o covetous_a man_n be_v desirous_a of_o true_a virtue_n and_o perfection_n the_o covetous_a man_n have_v never_o his_o fill_n for_o the_o more_o he_o have_v the_o more_o he_o desire_v and_o i_o will_v have_v religious_a man_n such_o follower_n of_o spiritual_a covetousness_n for_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o base_a mind_n if_o a_o man_n when_o he_o have_v mean_n to_o attain_v to_o great_a perfection_n do_v propose_v unto_o himself_o and_o think_v upon_o lesser_a but_o i_o desire_v to_o have_v my_o servant_n valiant_a and_o generous_o mind_v who_o aspire_v to_o great_a and_o hard_a matter_n for_o if_o i_o have_v create_v they_o to_o a_o end_n the_o most_o excellent_a in_o the_o world_n &_o have_v raise_v they_o up_o to_o so_o high_a a_o state_n that_o be_v to_o be_v religious_a why_o shall_v they_o not_o with_o all_o their_o possible_a force_n labour_v to_o perfection_n that_o will_v be_v most_o content_v to_o we_o both_o who_o cooperate_v not_o conformable_o to_o the_o benefit_n receive_v be_v injurious_a to_o the_o benefactor_n 2._o let_v he_o tell_v i_o whosoever_o have_v no_o care_n to_o arrive_v to_o any_o great_a perfection_n but_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o have_v have_v a_o taste_n thereof_o whether_o he_o will_v so_o deal_v with_o his_o body_n be_v he_o content_v it_o shall_v enjoy_v a_o mediocrity_n of_o health_n when_o he_o may_v have_v it_o perfect_o strong_a sound_a and_o lusty_a will_v he_o wish_v but_o a_o poor_a mean_n of_o lyve_a and_o not_o the_o best_a if_o then_o of_o all_o earthly_a thing_n which_o serve_v the_o body_n we_o choose_v the_o best_a most_o perfect_a and_o all_o in_o great_a quantity_n number_n and_o quality_n the_o most_o excellent_a why_o shall_v we_o not_o also_o for_o the_o soul_n good_a which_o be_v the_o mistress_n of_o the_o body_n wish_v and_o make_v choice_n of_o the_o most_o perfect_a and_o most_o absolute_a virtue_n that_o family_n be_v nothing_o well_o govern_v where_o the_o handmaid_n be_v better_a treat_v than_o the_o mistress_n of_o the_o house_n 3._o who_o will_v deny_v that_o it_o be_v a_o foul_a and_o shameful_a thing_n for_o a_o religious_a man_n to_o stay_v in_o the_o low_a degree_n of_o virtue_n when_o he_o see_v secular_a man_n never_o to_o make_v a_o stay_n in_o their_o degree_n of_o state_n of_o life_n which_o they_o have_v once_o embrace_v but_o ever_o to_o aspire_v to_o a_o high_a until_o they_o come_v to_o the_o high_a hence_o it_o be_v that_o a_o vulgar_a person_n first_o seek_v to_o raise_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o gentleman_n than_o a_o baron_n next_o a_o earl_n a_o marquis_n a_o duke_n until_o in_o conclusion_n he_o lay_v hold_v on_o the_o sceptre_n and_o crown_n and_o when_o he_o be_v come_v to_o this_o he_o be_v not_o content_v with_o a_o ordinary_a crown_n but_o he_o seek_v a_o more_o rich_a more_o potent_a &_o a_o more_o noble_a crown_n and_o consequent_o the_o great_a that_o can_v be_v have_v in_o this_o life_n and_o shall_v a_o religious_a man_n be_v of_o so_o dastardly_a a_o mind_n as_o not_o to_o labour_v to_o obtain_v a_o most_o noble_a spiritual_a crown_n shall_v he_o stand_v in_o the_o first_o degree_n of_o perfection_n when_o he_o may_v with_o his_o great_a commendation_n and_o no_o less_o profit_n mount_v up_o to_o the_o high_a be_v not_o this_o a_o strange_a kind_n of_o sottishness_n and_o folly_n be_v not_o this_o to_o make_v a_o light_a esteem_n of_o my_o will_n and_o to_o refuse_v the_o help_n of_o my_o grace_n by_o the_o benefit_n whereof_o he_o may_v compass_v a_o high_a degree_n of_o perfection_n 4._o understand_v my_o son_n that_o a_o religious_a man_n be_v more_o dear_a unto_o i_o who_o endeavour_v for_o my_o great_a glory_n to_o arrive_v to_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o perfection_n and_o this_o ought_v not_o without_o cause_n to_o be_v enough_o unto_o he_o not_o to_o stay_v in_o his_o course_n but_o still_o to_o hold_v on_o go_v to_o tell_v i_o what_o servant_n be_v so_o contemptible_a &_o vile_a who_o be_v content_v to_o be_v in_o little_a grace_n and_o favour_n with_o his_o lord_n when_o he_o may_v be_v in_o very_o great_a why_o then_o thou_o religious_a man_n who_o be_v for_o so_o many_o respect_v bind_v unto_o i_o as_o my_o servant_n why_o i_o say_v when_o by_o labour_v to_o perfection_n thou_o may_v deserve_v my_o extraordinary_a favour_n thou_o delay_v to_o do_v it_o what_o pain_n do_v the_o poor_a servant_n take_v to_o gain_v his_o master_n grace_n and_o how_o much_o be_v he_o afflict_v when_o he_o see_v notwithstanding_o all_o the_o diligence_n he_o use_v he_o can_v get_v into_o his_o master_n favour_n wherefore_o then_o do_v thou_o make_v a_o stand_n in_o the_o very_a entrance_n to_o perfection_n when_o thou_o may_v easy_o get_v into_o the_o innermost_a part_n of_o it_o &_o gain_v thy_o lord_n unto_o thou_o to_o please_v i_o be_v not_o my_o gain_n but_o thou_o 5._o o_o of_o what_o worth_n be_v but_o one_o degree_n
second_o because_o the_o person_n to_o who_o it_o be_v make_v be_v divine_a that_o be_v god_n himself_o now_o let_v a_o religious_a man_n consider_v and_o see_v how_o much_o he_o ought_v to_o love_v it_o with_o what_o regard_n to_o keep_v it_o and_o with_o what_o devotion_n and_o care_v to_o observe_v it_o in_o all_o thing_n that_o he_o be_v able_a because_o it_o be_v make_v to_o he_o who_o penetrate_v and_o enter_v into_o the_o most_o inward_a secret_n of_o the_o hart_n and_o well_o know_v who_o have_v just_a cause_n to_o observe_v it_o and_o who_o not_o 5._o but_o now_o i_o will_v desire_v to_o know_v of_o those_o to_o who_o it_o cause_v some_o trouble_n and_o difficulty_n that_o they_o be_v tie_v in_o so_o noble_a and_o holy_a a_o band_n what_o the_o cause_n be_v that_o secular_a man_n have_v they_o in_o so_o great_a regard_n and_o veneration_n they_o will_v say_v perhaps_o because_o they_o be_v religious_a and_o my_o servant_n and_o what_o make_v they_o religious_a and_o my_o servant_n but_o these_o three_o vow_n many_o secular_a person_n live_v at_o this_o day_n in_o the_o world_n far_o more_o learned_a more_o holy_a and_o more_o perfect_a than_o many_o religious_a and_o yet_o be_v they_o nothing_o so_o much_o honour_v as_o religious_a man_n be_v and_o the_o cause_n be_v because_o they_o be_v not_o tie_v to_o i_o by_o these_o holy_a band_n of_o vow_n secular_a man_n when_o they_o behold_v religious_a person_n do_v consider_v they_o as_o whole_o i_o by_o three_o vow_n consecrate_v to_o i_o &_o what_o honour_n they_o do_v they_o they_o think_v they_o give_v to_o i_o but_o this_o they_o do_v not_o to_o man_n of_o the_o world_n though_o otherwise_o eminent_a for_o their_o virtue_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v tie_v in_o these_o band_n be_v no_o contemptible_a matter_n but_o most_o honourable_a and_o most_o noble_a even_o to_o the_o world_n since_o the_o religious_a be_v in_o so_o great_a veneration_n with_o the_o great_a man_n of_o the_o world_n 6._o these_o three_o vow_n again_o be_v of_o very_o great_a regard_n for_o that_o they_o cause_v the_o religious_a to_o triumph_v victorious_o and_o to_o go_v away_o with_o victory_n over_o their_o three_o deadly_a enemy_n for_o whil_v they_o exercise_v poverty_n against_o the_o vanity_n of_o the_o world_n chastity_n against_o the_o tentation_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o obedience_n against_o the_o fraud_n of_o the_o crafty_a devil_n they_o go_v easy_o away_o with_o victory_n but_o those_o religious_a who_o use_v not_o these_o kind_n of_o arm_n be_v oftentimes_o shameful_o overcome_v let_v not_o he_o be_v a_o soldier_n who_o will_v not_o take_v a_o weapon_n in_o hand_n neither_o let_v he_o go_v to_o the_o battle_n who_o refuse_v to_o fight_v 7._o and_o now_o tell_v i_o my_o son_n what_o those_o religious_a man_n deserve_v who_o make_v but_o light_a esteem_n of_o so_o holy_a and_o godly_a a_o obligation_n and_o what_o they_o also_o deserve_v who_o keep_v it_o not_o when_o they_o may_v &_o aught_o to_o keep_v it_o what_o punishment_n attend_v they_o who_o do_v not_o only_o break_v it_o but_o further_o contemn_v it_o also_o o_o how_o straight_o a_o account_n be_v they_o to_o make_v not_o only_o of_o their_o own_o transgression_n but_o also_o of_o those_o of_o other_o that_o be_v of_o those_o who_o by_o their_o bad_a example_n be_v induce_v to_o violate_v and_o break_v their_o vow_n they_o have_v before_o make_v unto_o i_o for_o promise_v by_o vow_n be_v not_o make_v to_o man_n but_o to_o the_o divine_a majesty_n it_o be_v not_o make_v unwilling_o but_o voluntary_o neither_o be_v the_o obligation_n thereof_o concern_v any_o light_n or_o temporal_a matter_n but_o touch_v a_o great_a and_o spiritual_a matter_n that_o be_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n he_o that_o light_o regard_v what_o he_o have_v once_o promise_v to_o god_n shall_v again_o be_v as_o little_o regard_v of_o god_n of_o the_o utility_n and_o profit_n that_o vow_n bring_v and_o cause_n to_o religious_a person_n chap._n ii_o lord_n our_o nature_n be_v so_o sore_o depress_v &_o surcharge_v with_o the_o weight_n of_o our_o own_o misery_n as_o i_o know_v not_o whether_o it_o be_v good_a and_o profitable_a for_o a_o man_n to_o bind_v himself_o by_o vow_n since_o to_o i_o it_o seem_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o add_v one_o burden_n to_o another_o and_o consequent_o much_o to_o be_v fear_v least_o in_o conclusion_n see_v it_o be_v very_o weak_a it_o fall_v under_o the_o burden_n and_o more_o than_o this_o there_o be_v so_o many_o obligation_n and_o band_n of_o precept_n impose_v partly_o by_o thou_o partly_o by_o thy_o church_n lay_v upon_o we_o as_o it_o be_v almost_o impossible_a for_o we_o to_o satisfy_v they_o therefore_o it_o seem_v not_o good_a to_o surcharge_n ourselves_o with_o new_a band_n of_o vow_n neither_o do_v there_o appear_v so_o great_a utility_n likely_a to_o redound_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o vow_n but_o that_o there_o be_v present_v a_o great_a danger_n by_o transgress_v and_o break_v they_o i_o add_v further_o lord_n that_o fire_n and_o voluntary_a office_n of_o devotion_n be_v more_o accept_v off_o by_o thou_o then_o be_v the_o force_v but_o whosoever_o shall_v make_v a_o vow_n be_v force_v to_o stand_v to_o his_o promise_n and_o therefore_o i_o see_v not_o how_o great_a a_o utility_n there_o be_v of_o vow_n 2._o thou_o be_v deceive_v my_o son_n for_o vow_n be_v burden_n that_o load_n not_o but_o rather_o ease_n &_o help_v nature_n itself_o to_o the_o exercise_v of_o all_o more_o noble_a work_n the_o feather_n and_o wing_n of_o bird_n carry_v a_o show_v of_o a_o burden_n and_o yet_o they_o help_v to_o raise_v they_o aloft_o and_o without_o which_o they_o can_v fly_v beside_o experience_n teach_v that_o they_o be_v religious_a who_o do_v most_o prompt_o &_o most_o exact_o observe_v the_o commaundment_n of_o god_n whence_o it_o appear_v that_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o vow_n they_o be_v holpen_v to_o observe_v the_o precept_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o church_n after_o a_o more_o exact_a and_o perfect_a manner_n 3._o thou_o be_v wide_a if_o thou_o think_v that_o any_o profit_n return_v to_o i_o by_o thy_o vow_n it_o be_v not_o so_o there_o be_v no_o sow_v nor_o mow_v for_o i_o here_o promise_v make_v to_o man_n redound_v to_o the_o profit_n of_o they_o to_o who_o they_o be_v make_v but_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o vow_n that_o be_v make_v to_o i_o remain_v to_o the_o utility_n of_o he_o who_o vow_v yea_o the_o honour_n &_o glory_n that_o of_o vow_n arise_v to_o i_o and_o my_o service_n &_o therefore_o have_v no_o merit_n of_o their_o work_n at_o all_o thou_o be_v deceive_v for_o there_o be_v two_o necessity_n one_o natural_a and_o this_o take_v away_o all_o liberty_n merit_n &_o commendation_n of_o all_o good_a work_n such_o as_o be_v the_o fall_n of_o a_o stone_n downward_o the_o other_o be_v voluntary_a or_o proceed_v of_o the_o will_n or_o of_o a_o promise_n voluntary_o make_v and_o this_o do_v not_o only_o not_o take_v away_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o good_a work_n but_o also_o much_o increase_v it_o for_o that_o both_o the_o work_n and_o the_o promise_n be_v we_o otherwhiles_o find_v and_o feel_v in_o execute_v our_o promise_n of_o vow_n do_v not_o take_v away_o nor_o diminish_v in_o the_o religious_a their_o merit_n but_o rather_o increase_v it_o for_o in_o fulfil_n our_o vow_n there_o be_v not_o only_o do_v a_o good_a work_n but_o that_o heaviness_n repugnance_n and_o difficulty_n be_v further_o overcome_v which_o indeed_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o no_o little_a consequence_n howbeit_o to_o fulfil_v a_o good_a work_n promise_v by_o vow_n though_o there_o occur_v no_o difficulty_n in_o do_v it_o be_v more_o meritorious_a then_o to_o fulfil_v it_o without_o any_o precedent_a vow_n for_o as_o i_o will_v declare_v after_o the_o vow_n itself_o be_v meritorious_a which_o merit_n he_o have_v not_o who_o do_v a_o good_a work_n
they_o may_v repose_v all_o their_o hope_n in_o god_n providence_n 3._o the_o religious_a man_n the_o less_o he_o have_v and_o the_o less_o desire_n he_o have_v of_o temporal_a thing_n be_v the_o more_o apt_a for_o the_o help_a of_o soul_n and_o when_o i_o do_v after_o send_v they_o forth_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n all_o the_o world_n over_o do_v they_o go_v load_v with_o baggage_n or_o attend_v upon_o by_o great_a train_n of_o servant_n or_o do_v they_o advertise_v the_o city_n whither_o they_o go_v of_o their_o come_n that_o they_o may_v find_v all_o manner_n of_o thing_n provide_v and_o make_v ready_a for_o they_o no_o such_o matter_n but_o they_o go_v full_a of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n load_v with_o the_o weight_n of_o my_o doctrine_n and_o incense_v with_o a_o burn_a desire_n of_o convert_n country_n to_o the_o faith_n they_o do_v like_o poor_a man_n enter_v into_o the_o city_n and_o town_n where_o while_o they_o make_v their_o stay_n by_o preach_v i_o poor_a and_o naked_a dead_a upon_o the_o cross_n they_o cause_v exceed_v motion_n in_o their_o hearer_n mind_n who_o when_o they_o see_v neither_o to_o seek_v nor_o to_o accept_v of_o gold_n or_o silver_n marvel_v much_o and_o when_o they_o further_o see_v they_o to_o take_v so_o long_a iournye_n all_o the_o world_n over_o in_o extreme_a penury_n and_o want_v of_o thing_n only_o for_o the_o gain_v of_o the_o soul_n of_o other_o and_o also_o to_o love_v want_n and_o poverty_n they_o be_v almost_o astonish_v with_o very_a admiration_n and_o for_o that_o cause_n they_o be_v more_o ready_a and_o more_o easy_o induce_v to_o put_v their_o neck_n under_o the_o yoke_n of_o the_o gospel_n these_o two_o thing_n do_v not_o well_o suit_n to_o gain_v soul_n and_o to_o attend_v withal_o to_o our_o private_a commodity_n and_o pleasure_n 4._o if_o again_o my_o son_n thou_o turn_v thyself_o to_o the_o founder_n of_o religion_n thou_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o be_v so_o great_a lover_n of_o poverty_n as_o they_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o word_n i_o and_o thou_o to_o have_v any_o place_n among_o they_o think_v that_o by_o these_o two_o word_n be_v destroy_v all_o the_o force_n of_o poverty_n and_o so_o much_o afraid_a of_o the_o name_n of_o poverty_n who_o disciple_n and_o follower_n they_o be_v what_o rule_n permit_v they_o to_o have_v good_n and_o provision_n of_o their_o own_o wherefore_o do_v they_o take_v pain_n to_o get_v money_n together_o whether_o to_o convert_v it_o to_o their_o own_o use_n or_o to_o leave_v it_o to_o other_o howsoever_o they_o do_v it_o even_o secular_a man_n have_v not_o care_n to_o gather_v riches_n for_o any_o other_o cause_n what_o difference_n then_o be_v there_o between_o the_o religious_a man_n and_o those_o of_o the_o world_n this_o be_v not_o for_o a_o man_n to_o bear_v heaven_n away_o by_o violence_n but_o to_o afflict_v and_o vex_v himself_o for_o the_o gather_n of_o earthly_a trash_n together_o the_o doctrine_n that_o i_o have_v deliver_v be_v not_o so_o neither_o be_v they_o the_o follower_n of_o their_o founder_n and_o forefather_n and_o see_v they_o trace_v not_o the_o same_o step_n with_o they_o they_o will_v never_o come_v to_o the_o same_o degree_n of_o perfection_n that_o they_o do_v 5._o lord_n if_o thou_o give_v we_o not_o some_o spur_n to_o put_v we_o forward_o to_o love_v poverty_n it_o will_v easy_o be_v abandon_v and_o forsake_v for_o since_o it_o carry_v a_o outward_a representation_n of_o ignobility_n contempt_n and_o baseness_n and_o of_o be_v next_o unto_o misery_n no_o esteem_n be_v make_v thereof_o son_n thou_o be_v very_o much_o deceive_v because_o thou_o use_v not_o a_o distinction_n in_o force_a poverty_n &_o that_o which_o come_v of_o necessity_n be_v contemptible_a and_o hate_v of_o the_o world_n but_o voluntary_a poverty_n since_o it_o be_v a_o noble_a and_o heroical_a virtue_n how_o can_v it_o be_v ignoble_a and_o base_a if_o it_o tread_v under_o foot_n &_o contemn_v all_o hold_v all_o the_o riches_n of_o this_o world_n for_o toy_n and_o ordure_n if_o they_o be_v compare_v with_o it_o and_o for_o a_o declaration_n of_o their_o exceed_a great_a affection_n unto_o it_o they_o call_v poverty_n their_o lady_n and_o queen_n and_o for_o such_o they_o esteem_v and_o use_v it_o neither_o do_v they_o this_o in_o the_o first_o fervour_n of_o their_o conversion_n only_o but_o the_o elder_a they_o wax_v in_o the_o serve_v of_o god_n the_o more_o they_o love_v and_o reverence_v it_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n they_o be_v very_o earnest_a and_o desirous_a that_o they_o may_v give_v up_o their_o last_o breath_n to_o god_n upon_o the_o bare_a ground_n 7._o on_o the_o contrary_a side_n i_o be_o not_o a_o little_a displease_v to_o see_v some_o religious_a so_o little_a devote_a to_o poverty_n as_o those_o who_o discommend_v it_o have_v a_o horror_n to_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v detest_v and_o by_o deed_n also_o go_v against_o it_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o in_o their_o meat_n and_o drink_v in_o their_o clothing_n and_o habitation_n they_o will_v be_v entreat_v commodious_o and_o daint_o yea_o &_o that_o better_a and_o more_o commodious_o than_o they_o entreat_v themselves_o in_o the_o world_n and_o if_o they_o have_v not_o every_o thing_n as_o they_o listen_v they_o be_v trouble_v and_o can_v take_v no_o rest_n at_o all_o and_o what_o a_o infelicity_n be_v this_o they_o give_v over_o the_o world_n to_o serve_v i_o they_o leave_v all_o their_o riches_n neglect_v their_o commodity_n and_o of_o themselves_o vow_v poverty_n that_o they_o may_v ever_o lead_v a_o quiet_a life_n and_o after_o they_o be_v once_o enter_v into_o religion_n they_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v disquiet_v and_o trouble_v for_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o forsake_v in_o the_o world_n this_o be_v nothing_o but_o to_o sing_v a_o song_n of_o recantation_n and_o to_o revoke_v their_o vow_n of_o perpetual_a poverty_n for_o what_o difference_n be_v there_o whether_o thou_o desire_v earthly_a riches_n or_o superfluous_a commodity_n and_o recreation_n when_o as_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o be_v repugnant_a to_o religious_a poverty_n 8._o but_o it_o displease_v i_o more_o that_o there_o be_v some_o who_o not_o find_v in_o religion_n all_o abundance_n of_o thing_n as_o they_o have_v in_o the_o world_n do_v look_v back_o and_o crave_v their_o commodity_n first_o of_o one_o secular_a man_n and_o then_o of_o another_o and_o make_v themselves_o their_o vassal_n and_o slave_n and_o â—f_o so_o to_o do_v for_o their_o own_o use_n and_o commodity_n be_v bad_a how_o much_o worse_a it_o be_v then_o to_o exact_v such_o thing_n of_o secular_a man_n that_o they_o may_v be_v give_v to_o other_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o any_o religious_a whereof_o be_v no_o lover_n of_o
by_o he_o especial_o if_o it_o be_v hard_a and_o troublesome_a this_o be_v not_o the_o desire_n of_o a_o good_a and_o true_a religious_a man_n labour_v to_o perfection_n but_o only_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o seem_v religious_a in_o name_n and_o not_o indeed_o and_o to_o wish_v that_o the_o superior_a be_v a_o statue_n or_o image_n &_o not_o a_o living_n man_n other_o will_v have_v a_o superior_a industrious_a and_o diligent_a in_o procure_v necessarye_n appertain_v to_o meat_n drink_n clothing_n and_o like_a commodity_n and_o in_o all_o event_n to_o take_v a_o special_a care_n in_o patronise_a defend_v and_o help_v they_o but_o they_o wisâ—_n he_o not_o to_o be_v so_o vigilant_a in_o observation_n oâ—_n religious_a discipline_n which_o depend_v oâ—_n obedience_n and_o this_o desire_n be_v much_o worse_a than_o the_o former_a for_o to_o wish_v this_o be_v nothing_o else_o then_o to_o have_v a_o will_n and_o desire_n thaâ—_n the_o superior_a make_v his_o subject_n not_o good_a religious_a but_o idle_a and_o slothful_a who_o may_v have_v care_n of_o their_o body_n and_o neglect_v to_o direct_v their_o soul_n in_o the_o way_n of_o spirit_n who_o may_v be_v a_o good_a companion_n and_o a_o bad_a superior_a the_o subject_n who_o have_v a_o desire_n that_o his_o superior_a shall_v not_o perform_v the_o office_n of_o a_o good_a superior_a do_v manifest_o declare_v that_o he_o carry_v himself_o not_o for_o a_o good_a subject_n under_o he_o of_o the_o first_o degree_n of_o obedience_n which_o consist_v in_o execution_n of_o any_o thing_n command_v chap._n xxv_o subject_n be_v better_o affect_v to_o their_o superior_a they_o will_v also_o be_v more_o diligent_a in_o fulfil_n of_o obedience_n in_o which_o kind_n the_o child_n of_o this_o world_n be_v more_o wise_a and_o more_o ready_a than_o the_o child_n of_o light_n 5._o another_o condition_n be_v that_o obedience_n be_v intiere_a for_o such_o be_v my_o own_o obedience_n it_o shall_v be_v enough_o for_o religious_a man_n to_o love_v this_o entiernesse_n if_o they_o thorough_o understand_v that_o this_o be_v my_o will_n and_o such_o the_o superior_n intention_n that_o what_o be_v command_v be_v whether_o they_o think_v they_o be_v to_o obey_v in_o all_o thing_n or_o but_o in_o some_o whether_o they_o understand_v that_o they_o be_v always_o to_o obey_v or_o only_o for_o a_o time_n and_o if_o they_o understand_v that_o they_o be_v to_o obey_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n but_o for_o a_o certain_a time_n only_o who_o will_v accept_v of_o such_o a_o vow_n sure_o i_o accept_v not_o the_o vow_n moderate_v the_o grief_n and_o heavyne_n that_o be_v occasion_v by_o tribulation_n conserve_v and_o arm_v reason_n that_o she_o be_v not_o put_v from_o her_o stand_n and_o overthrow_v by_o the_o inordinate_a desire_n and_o passion_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o this_o be_v nothing_o else_o then_o to_o stop_v the_o entrance_n against_o many_o error_n and_o default_n that_o befall_v whil_n the_o mind_n be_v unquiet_a and_o the_o reason_n trouble_v and_o therefore_o in_o my_o scripture_n it_o be_v say_v that_o patience_n have_v a_o perpetual_a work_n for_o that_o when_o the_o sorrow_n &_o sometime_o it_o hurt_v for_o the_o physician_n often_o find_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o sickness_n and_o therefore_o they_o can_v well_o apply_v any_o cure_n unto_o it_o the_o second_o be_v prayer_n whereby_o recourse_n be_v make_v to_o the_o heavenly_a physician_n who_o as_o most_o wise_a have_v a_o perfect_a knowledge_n of_o all_o disease_n and_o be_v omnipotent_a be_v of_o power_n to_o take_v they_o away_o in_o a_o instant_n and_o this_o medicine_n though_o it_o do_v ever_o good_a do_v not_o for_o all_o that_o restore_v the_o health_n at_o all_o time_n for_o the_o heavenly_a physician_n ever_o prescribe_v a_o remedy_n that_o be_v expedient_a for_o the_o sick_a person_n but_o corporal_a health_n be_v not_o ever_o good_a for_o the_o sick_a &_o therefore_o god_n do_v not_o at_o all_o time_n give_v it_o he_o the_o three_o antidote_n be_v patience_n which_o always_o cure_v be_v healthful_a both_o to_o body_n and_o soul_n and_o help_v not_o the_o sick_a alone_o but_o the_o accompayn_v it_o with_o a_o good_a desire_n and_o firm_a resolution_n to_o observe_v they_o better_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v 4._o the_o four_o be_v that_o thou_o have_v a_o particular_a affection_n to_o the_o observation_n of_o thy_o four_o vow_n of_o poverty_n chastity_n obedience_n and_o enclosure_n keep_v they_o with_o more_o care_n than_o thou_o will_v most_v precious_a stone_n and_o to_o the_o end_n thou_o may_v the_o better_o affect_v they_o read_v or_o meditate_v the_o advertisement_n follow_v of_o the_o vow_n which_o the_o religious_a make_v and_o first_o of_o obedience_n thou_o must_v obey_v thy_o superior_a perfect_o for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n &_o consider_v that_o have_v the_o virtue_n of_o obedience_n thou_o shall_v together_o with_o it_o have_v the_o other_o also_o and_o especial_o for_o this_o that_o by_o it_o our_o saviour_n do_v redeem_v the_o world_n that_o be_v ruin_v by_o the_o contrary_a vice_n of_o disobedience_n and_o therefore_o cease_v not_o to_o make_v petition_n to_o his_o divine_a majesty_n that_o he_o please_v to_o grant_v thou_o to_o know_v and_o understand_v the_o importance_n merit_n efficacy_n and_o perfection_n of_o certain_a holy_a bashfulness_n which_o may_v worthy_o be_v call_v the_o keeper_n and_o intertayner_n of_o chastity_n as_o that_o which_o defend_v and_o preserve_v it_o against_o all_o stain_n of_o dishonesty_n the_o office_n of_o this_o bashfulness_n be_v to_o cause_n that_o the_o eye_n be_v keep_v down_o and_o cast_v upon_o the_o ground_n and_o to_o cause_v the_o religious_a person_n to_o conceive_v a_o horror_n of_o see_v &_o of_o be_v see_v and_o if_o peradventure_o she_o shall_v be_v foâ—ced_v to_o speak_v or_o to_o suffer_v herself_o to_o be_v see_v she_o eftsoon_o cover_v her_o face_n with_o a_o honest_a blush_n the_o testimony_n of_o the_o care_n which_o she_o have_v of_o the_o purity_n of_o her_o soul_n to_o be_v short_a this_o bashfulness_n cause_v she_o to_o be_v modest_a in_o her_o gesture_n in_o her_o go_n and_o in_o all_o that_o she_o do_v and_o by_o that_o occasion_n conserve_v the_o virtue_n of_o chastity_n in_o her_o perfection_n the_o other_o sister_n of_o chastity_n be_v a_o purity_n of_o hart_n by_o mean_n whereof_o the_o soul_n become_v so_o exceed_o affect_v to_o â—his_n virtue_n as_o it_o conceive_v not_o only_o a_o horror_n at_o the_o very_o least_o dishonest_a thought_n but_o also_o at_o every_o inordinate_a affection_n to_o whatsoever_o creature_n ever_o carry_v a_o chaste_a hart_n to_o her_o spouse_n and_o hold_v it_o for_o spiritual_a adultery_n never_o so_o little_a to_o separate_v her_o affection_n from_o he_o of_o the_o vow_n of_o poverty_n as_o touch_v the_o vow_n of_o poverty_n i_o will_v have_v thou_o to_o be_v careful_a to_o content_v thyself_o with_o the_o only_a usage_n of_o thing_n that_o shall_v be_v unto_o thou_o necessary_a and_o to_o make_v a_o conscience_n of_o use_v they_o as_o thy_o own_o for_o fear_v least_o under_o the_o colour_n of_o necessity_n thou_o become_v in_o time_n a_o proprietary_n therefore_o thou_o must_v not_o give_v any_o thing_n unto_o another_o without_o licence_n of_o thy_o superior_a nor_o in_o like_a manner_n take_v any_o thing_n without_o leave_n though_o it_o shall_v be_v otherwise_o necessary_a thou_o must_v never_o have_v any_o money_n at_o thy_o own_o disposition_n whether_o it_o be_v in_o thy_o own_o hand_n or_o in_o another_o lest_o the_o devil_n deceive_v thou_o and_o under_o the_o pretence_n of_o necessity_n induce_v thou_o to_o violate_v thy_o vow_n of_o poverty_n and_o by_o so_o do_v cause_v thou_o to_o incur_v the_o danger_n of_o eternal_a damnation_n for_o not_o keep_v thy_o promise_n make_v unto_o god_n and_o because_o this_o vice_n of_o propriety_n be_v wont_a to_o reign_v in_o the_o negligent_a and_o careless_a religious_a thou_o must_v mark_v certain_a point_n which_o may_v serve_v as_o antidote_n for_o the_o dryve_v of_o this_o affection_n far_o from_o thy_o hart_n consider_v first_o that_o this_o be_v a_o great_a sin_n than_o it_o be_v to_o cast_v off_o the_o habit_n or_o to_o go_v from_o one_o covent_n to_o another_o which_o yet_o be_v hold_v for_o a_o very_a scandalous_a thing_n it_o more_o import_v the_o religious_a to_o keep_v the_o three_o essential_a vow_n thereof_o and_o in_o particular_a the_o vow_n of_o poverty_n which_o be_v as_o the_o wall_n and_o rampire_n thereof_o then_o to_o wear_v such_o a_o habit_n or_o to_o live_v in_o such_o a_o monastery_n if_o then_o it_o be_v so_o great_a a_o sin_n to_o return_v to_o the_o habit_n of_o the_o world_n and_o to_o cast_v off_o that_o of_o religion_n or_o to_o run_v from_o one_o monastery_n to_o another_o what_o then_o think_v we_o shall_v it_o be_v to_o use_v any_o thing_n as_o our_o own_o and_o to_o break_v the_o vow_n of_o poverty_n which_o conserve_v religion_n in_o her_o integrity_n consider_v second_o how_o great_a a_o scandal_n thou_o give_v thy_o religious_a sister_n yea_o &_o secular_a person_n and_o how_o thou_o deâ—amest_v thy_o rel_n gion_n in_o as_o much_o as_o be_v in_o thou_o beside_o that_o in_o so_o do_v be_v to_o rob_v and_o steal_v by_o keep_v or_o glue_v that_o which_o be_v not_o thy_o for_o that_o which_o the_o religious_a may_v gain_v by_o her_o industry_n and_o pain_n or_o that_o which_o be_v give_v she_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v be_v not_o she_o but_o the_o communitye_n and_o this_o theft_n be_v so_o much_o the_o great_a because_o it_o be_v commit_v in_o that_o which_o appertain_v to_o the_o church_n to_o a_o holy_a place_n to_o the_o poor_a and_o to_o god_n servant_n and_o of_o this_o it_o come_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o propriety_n be_v call_v sacrilege_n and_o consequent_o worthy_a most_o grievous_o to_o be_v punish_v consider_v three_o that_o the_o precious_a stone_n whereof_o our_o saviour_n make_v mention_n in_o the_o gospel_n be_v nothing_o but_o poverty_n and_o that_o thou_o have_v buy_v it_o with_o all_o this_o thy_o own_o self_n also_o and_o draw_v out_o of_o this_o a_o holy_a confusion_n that_o thou_o give_v all_o again_o for_o a_o thing_n of_o nothing_o which_o thou_o do_v when_o thou_o use_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v give_v thou_o as_o though_o they_o be_v thy_o own_o acknowledge_v thy_o own_o fault_n herein_o and_o remember_v that_o thou_o can_v not_o have_v any_o great_a treasure_n
