receiver_n second_o more_o particular_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o sacrament_n touch_v the_o first_o of_o these_o seven_o particular_n must_v be_v know_v of_o every_o worthy_a receiver_n first_o that_z the_o lord_n have_v reveal_v in_o his_o worde_n what_o we_o ought_v both_o to_o know_v and_o acknowledge_v concern_v his_o will_n that_o all_o thing_n therein_o contain_v be_v true_a which_o whosoever_o know_v not_o can_v be_v in_o the_o estate_n of_o grace_n much_o less_o can_v be_v a_o worthy_a receiver_n of_o this_o sacrament_n second_o touch_v god_n himself_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o god_n who_o be_v of_o a_o spiritual_a nature_n most_o wise_a just_a mighty_a and_o merciful_a who_o have_v ordain_v all_o thing_n create_v all_o thing_n and_o govern_v all_o thing_n according_a to_o his_o own_o will_n and_o that_o this_o god_n have_v reveal_v himself_o in_o three_o person_n father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n and_o that_o these_o three_o be_v but_o one_o god_n three_o concern_v man_n the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o god_n in_o the_o beginning_n create_v man_n in_o a_o most_o happy_a estate_n perfect_a in_o soul_n and_o body_n after_o his_o own_o image_n who_o by_o his_o own_o disobedience_n lose_v his_o own_o happiness_n procure_v god_n curse_n and_o make_v both_o himself_o and_o posterity_n subject_a unto_o all_o misery_n four_o for_o ourselves_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v corrupt_v seed_n of_o corrupt_a parent_n conceive_a and_o bear_v in_o sin_n and_o bring_v forth_o in_o iniquity_n whereby_o we_o deserve_v god_n curse_v and_o everlasting_a condemnation_n five_o concern_v our_o remedy_n the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o neither_o himself_n nor_o any_o creature_n in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n can_v free_v he_o from_o that_o curse_a estate_n but_o that_o god_n the_o father_n of_o his_o mere_a love_n and_o tender_a compassion_n without_o any_o desert_n of_o man_n do_v send_v his_o own_o son_n to_o take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o and_o in_o the_o same_o to_o work_v our_o redemption_n and_o to_o reconcile_v we_o unto_o god_n six_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o forasmuch_o as_o his_o redemption_n be_v wrought_v by_o christ_n we_o must_v have_v some_o mean_n to_o make_v that_o we_o which_o be_v christ_n and_o that_o be_v only_a faith_n for_o it_o be_v faith_n that_o apprehend_v and_o apply_v christ_n and_o his_o obedience_n and_o make_v the_o same_o we_o as_o we_o have_v wrought_v it_o ourselves_o and_o last_o of_o all_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n must_v know_v that_o this_o faith_n â—s_v not_o in_o ourselves_o but_o it_o be_v the_o â—ree_a gift_n of_o god_n wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o
singular_a benefit_n that_o come_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o same_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o apostle_n reason_n in_o this_o 29._o verse_n to_o enforce_v his_o former_a duty_n of_o preparation_n apostle_n saint_n paul_n have_v in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o this_o chapter_n coherence_n the_o coherence_n â—et_o down_o the_o true_a and_o holy_a manner_n of_o minister_a and_o receive_v the_o supper_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o â—_o direction_n for_o all_o good_a minister_n and_o people_n to_o follow_v do_v iâ—_n the_o seven_o and_o twentieth_o verse_n threaten_v the_o unworthy_a receiver_n that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o no_o lessâ—_n then_o high_a treason_n against_o thâ—_n blood_n of_o christ_n for_o profane_v and_o unworthy_a receive_n of_o thâ—_n same_o and_o verse_n 28._o he_o lay_v dowâ—_n a_o general_a rule_n to_o be_v observe_v oâ—_n all_o that_o will_v come_v worthy_o anâ—_n prepare_v as_o they_o ought_v let_v everâ—_n one_o therefore_o examine_v himself_o anâ—_n so_o let_v he_o eat_v 28._o verse_n 28._o etc._n etc._n first_o his_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o be_v sound_a anâ—_n sanctify_v 2._o his_o faith_n whether_o iâ—_n be_v firm_a or_o not_o 3._o his_o repentance_n whether_o he_o have_v a_o dislike_n of_o sin_n past_a a_o resolute_a purpoâ—â—_n and_o endeavour_n to_o avoid_v sin_n foâ—_n the_o time_n to_o come_v resolve_v to_o obey_v god_n in_o all_o thing_n 4._o whether_o he_o come_v in_o love_n and_o charity_n to_o man_n all_o which_o be_v absolute_a necessary_a in_o every_o true_a communicant_a that_o desire_n to_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n worthy_o verse_n 29._o the_o better_a to_o awake_v all_o careless_a and_o unreverent_a receiver_n of_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n the_o apostle_n come_v to_o show_v they_o the_o danger_n of_o the_o want_n of_o this_o preparation_n viz._n that_o such_o do_v not_o only_o loose_v their_o labour_n or_o the_o benefit_n which_o otherwise_o they_o may_v receive_v by_o the_o use_n of_o this_o sacrament_n but_o such_o do_v indeed_o provoke_v god_n heavy_a wrath_n and_o displeasure_n against_o they_o &_o hereby_o hasten_v and_o procure_v their_o own_o judgement_n because_o they_o discern_v not_o the_o lord_n body_n that_o be_v they_o put_v no_o difference_n between_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n thus_o consecrate_v and_o set_v apart_o for_o such_o a_o holy_a use_n and_o ordinary_a bread_n and_o ordinary_a wine_n now_o in_o this_o 30._o verse_n the_o word_n of_o this_o text_n the_o apostle_n come_v oâ—_n prove_v that_o which_o he_o have_v seâ—_n down_o before_o viz._n that_o the_o unworthy_a receiver_n of_o the_o lordâ—_n supper_n draw_v down_o godâ—_n heavy_a wrath_n and_o vengeance_n by_o this_o mean_n upon_o he_o and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o bring_v in_o the_o church_n and_o people_n of_o god_n in_o corinth_n to_o witness_v this_o truth_n who_o for_o this_o very_a sin_n of_o unworthy_a receive_n of_o this_o sacrament_n be_v many_o of_o they_o strike_v some_o with_o one_o disease_n and_o some_o with_o another_o say_v for_o this_o cause_n many_o be_v sick_a and_o weak_a etc._n etc._n q.d._n you_o yourselves_o oh_o corinthian_n find_v this_o to_o be_v true_a that_o the_o unworthy_a receiver_n of_o this_o sacrament_n eat_v and_o drink_v his_o own_o judgement_n see_v that_o for_o this_o sin_n of_o you_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o you_o in_o punish_v many_o of_o you_o with_o faintness_n sickness_n yea_o and_o with_o death_n also_o all_o which_o judgement_n of_o god_n now_o rest_v upon_o you_o be_v so_o many_o witness_n of_o god_n displeasure_n against_o you_o for_o this_o sin_n this_o be_v the_o some_o of_o this_o verse_n doct._n 1_o wherein_o we_o be_v to_o observe_v how_o our_o apostle_n appli_v particular_o that_o which_o he_o have_v so_o general_o propound_v touch_v the_o abuse_n of_o this_o sacrament_n doctrine_n it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o make_v particular_a application_n of_o their_o doctrine_n teach_v that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o every_o faithful_a minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o make_v particular_a application_n of_o those_o doctrine_n the_o which_o they_o deliver_v not_o to_o soothe_v the_o people_n in_o their_o sin_n but_o plain_o to_o set_v they_o before_o they_o and_o to_o show_v they_o the_o judgment_n of_o god_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o for_o the_o same_o and_o thus_o do_v nathan_n make_v as_o watchman_n shepherd_n seer_n remembrancer_n etc._n etc._n reason_n 2_o second_o because_o we_o know_v that_o conviction_n be_v the_o ready_a way_n to_o conversion_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n must_v first_o of_o all_o be_v convict_v to_o see_v its_o error_n before_o he_o can_v come_v to_o leave_v and_o forsake_v the_o same_o now_o then_o inasmuch_o as_o this_o be_v it_o where-unto_a all_o the_o labour_n of_o god_n servant_n in_o the_o ministry_n do_v tend_v to_o bring_v man_n to_o see_v their_o sin_n and_o to_o repent_v for_o the_o same_o this_o can_v they_o not_o more_o better_a effect_n then_o by_o the_o particular_a application_n of_o their_o doctrine_n bring_v down_o the_o same_o and_o apply_v it_o unto_o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o hearer_n use_v 1_o reprofe_n for_o reprofe_n and_o sure_o this_o do_v serve_v to_o show_v why_o so_o many_o that_o labour_n in_o the_o lord_n vineyard_n among_o we_o be_v so_o unprofitable_a and_o do_v so_o little_a good_a in_o their_o ministry_n the_o reason_n be_v plain_a they_o deliver_v general_a doctrine_n without_o their_o use_v they_o make_v not_o a_o true_a and_o particular_a application_n of_o the_o same_o unto_o the_o conscience_n oâ—_n their_o hearer_n and_o so_o it_o want_v the_o life_n of_o all_o application_n and_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n man_n have_v noâ—_n their_o portion_n out_o of_o the_o same_o divide_v among_o they_o use_v 2_o second_o minister_n for_o instruction_n to_o minister_n this_o may_v serve_v to_o admonish_v all_o minister_n of_o the_o worde_n that_o as_o they_o desire_v to_o see_v some_o fruit_n of_o their_o labour_n the_o conversion_n of_o their_o hearer_n and_o those_o the_o lord_n have_v commit_v unto_o their_o charge_n so_o to_o behold_v paul_n practice_n here_o to_o deal_v faithful_o with_o man_n soul_n to_o rip_v up_o man_n conscience_n to_o smite_v home_o to_o press_v they_o with_o their_o sin_n and_o to_o say_v with_o nathan_n thou_o be_v the_o man_n for_o indeed_o such_o be_v the_o deceiptfulnesse_n of_o man_n nature_n that_o unless_o man_n be_v plain_o and_o faithful_o deal_v withal_o we_o may_v see_v that_o self-love_n will_v make_v man_n put_v off_o the_o most_o wholesome_a instruction_n unto_o other_o as_o if_o they_o do_v no_o whit_n concern_v themselves_o this_o be_v a_o good_a lesson_n for_o such_o and_o such_o a_o man_n i_o will_v they_o have_v hear_v it_o whereas_o indeed_o it_o concern_v none_o more_o than_o themselves_o paul_n prevent_v this_o among_o this_o people_n of_o corinth_n and_o tell_v they_o that_o many_o among_o they_o be_v weak_a etc._n etc._n oh_o that_o this_o duty_n be_v due_o regard_v of_o all_o in_o the_o ministry_n it_o can_v not_o be_v
