that_o 5_o be_v when_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v spend_v as_o the_o lamp_n go_v out_o when_o oil_n be_v either_o not_o supply_v or_o take_v away_o simile_n and_o yet_o the_o lamp_n be_v still_o a_o lamp_n for_o let_v oil_n be_v supply_v and_o fire_n put_v unto_o it_o and_o it_o will_v burn_v so_o there_o may_v be_v not_o the_o action_n and_o yet_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v in_o the_o heart_n for_o he_o be_v as_o well_o affect_v to_o sin_n as_o ever_o he_o be_v only_o the_o sap_n and_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v go_v but_o if_o oil_n be_v supply_v that_o be_v if_o strength_n of_o nature_n will_v but_o return_v sin_n will_v be_v as_o quick_a and_o vigorous_a as_o ever_o it_o be_v six_o good_a education_n when_o a_o man_n be_v bring_v 6_o up_o under_o good_a parent_n or_o master_n he_o may_v be_v so_o keep_v under_o that_o sin_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v mortify_v but_o let_v those_o be_v once_o at_o their_o own_o rule_n than_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v in_o they_o that_o be_v that_o they_o have_v not_o lose_v their_o swinish_a disposition_n only_o they_o be_v keep_v from_o foul_n of_o themselves_o as_o a_o swine_n so_o long_o as_o she_o be_v keep_v in_o a_o fair_a meadow_n can_v soul_n herself_o simile_n but_o if_o you_o give_v her_o liberty_n to_o go_v whither_o she_o list_v she_o will_v present_o be_v wallow_v in_o the_o mire_n even_o so_o these_o be_v ashamed_a to_o defile_v themselves_o while_o they_o be_v under_o good_a education_n but_o opportunity_n be_v offer_v it_o will_v soon_o appear_v sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v the_o use_n of_o this_o brief_o be_v for_o examination_n unto_o every_o use._n one_o to_o enter_v into_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o examine_v himself_o by_o these_o rule_n whether_o his_o sin_n be_v mortify_v or_o no_o and_o according_o to_o judge_v of_o he_o else_o the_o second_o question_n be_v for_o the_o comfort_v of_o weak_a 2._o christian_n see_v there_o be_v corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n how_o shall_v i_o know_v that_o the_o lust_n and_o stir_n of_o the_o heart_n proceed_v from_o a_o wound_a corruption_n or_o else_o be_v the_o action_n of_o a_o unmortified_a lust_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v you_o shall_v know_v they_o by_o these_o mortify_v rule_n first_o you_o shall_v know_v whether_o the_o lust_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v mortify_v and_o proceed_v from_o a_o wound_a heart_n or_o 1_o no_o by_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o that_o be_v if_o it_o proceed_v from_o the_o right_a root_n or_o arise_v from_o a_o deep_a humiliation_n wrought_v upon_o the_o soul_n either_o by_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n whereby_o the_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v to_o see_v sin_n in_o its_o ownenature_n and_o then_o a_o raise_n up_o of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o out_o of_o a_o love_n unto_o god_n to_o begin_v to_o mortify_v sin_n if_o the_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n do_v fight_v against_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v because_o it_o have_v receive_v the_o deadly_a wound_n but_o if_o it_o be_v not_o our_o of_o love_n unto_o god_n that_o thou_o mortifie_v sin_n if_o thy_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n have_v much_o rebellion_n in_o it_o whatsoever_o thou_o think_v of_o thyself_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v in_o thou_o every_o thing_n proceed_v from_o some_o cause_n if_o the_o cause_n be_v good_a the_o effect_n must_v needs_o be_v good_a likewise_o as_o for_o instance_n if_o the_o tree_n be_v good_a the_o fruit_n must_v be_v good_a but_o if_o the_o tree_n be_v evil_a the_o fruit_n can_v be_v good_a let_v every_o man_n therefore_o examine_v himself_o upon_o this_o ground_n second_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o generality_n of_o it_o â—_o for_o mortification_n be_v general_a and_o as_o death_n be_v unto_o the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n so_o be_v mortification_n unto_o the_o member_n of_o sin_n now_o you_o know_v that_o the_o nature_n of_o death_n be_v to_n ize_v upon_o all_o the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n it_o leave_v life_n in_o none_o so_o where_o true_a mortification_n be_v it_o leave_v life_n in_o no_o sin_n that_o be_v it_o take_v away_o the_o command_a power_n of_o sin_n for_o what_o be_v the_o life_n of_o sin_n but_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n take_v away_o this_o power_n and_o you_o take_v away_o this_o life_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o mortify_v one_o sin_n but_o you_o must_v mortify_v all_o sin_n to_o which_o purpose_n the_o holy_a apostle_n here_o bid_v say_v you_o shall_v find_v by_o this_o whether_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n be_v slay_v in_o you_o if_o you_o stand_v fast_o as_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n which_o you_o can_v do_v unless_o it_o may_v well_o rage_v and_o trouble_v thou_o for_o a_o time_n but_o it_o be_v only_o now_o and_o then_o by_o fit_n whereas_o a_o unmortified_a lust_n ever_o rage_v it_o be_v with_o sin_n in_o this_o case_n as_o it_o be_v simile_n with_o a_o man_n that_o have_v receive_v his_o deadly_a wound_n from_o his_o enemy_n he_o will_v not_o present_o fly_v away_o but_o will_v rather_o run_v more_o violent_o upon_o he_o that_o have_v wound_v he_o yet_o let_v he_o be_v never_o so_o violent_a in_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o action_n he_o sink_v down_o when_o he_o think_v to_o do_v the_o most_o harm_n than_o he_o be_v the_o most_o unable_a because_o he_o have_v receive_v his_o deadly_a wound_n whereby_o he_o have_v lose_v the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o nature_n which_o otherwise_o may_v have_v prevail_v so_o it_o will_v be_v with_o sin_n and_o with_o a_o mortify_a lust_n it_o may_v rage_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o seem_v to_o bear_v sway_n and_o rule_v over_o thou_o as_o lord_n but_o the_o power_n and_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v mortify_v and_o sink_v down_o want_v ability_n to_o prevail_v and_o why_o because_o it_o have_v receive_v its_o deadly_a wound_n
than_o he_o can_v do_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o regenerate_a man_n be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o he_o can_v do_v in_o these_o two_o particular_n 1._o first_o he_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v any_o duty_n or_o any_o thing_n 1_o god_n command_v according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o grace_n man_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v but_o if_o the_o duty_n or_o thing_n exceed_v the_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v than_o he_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o a_o extraordinary_a help_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o he_o can_v not_o do_v this_o before_o neither_o be_v it_o in_o the_o power_n of_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n to_o do_v it_o second_o he_o be_v able_a to_o resist_v any_o temptation_n or_o sin_n 2_o if_o it_o be_v not_o great_a or_o above_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v if_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n of_o distrust_n or_o impatiency_n or_o presumption_n if_o it_o exceed_v not_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v he_o be_v able_a to_o put_v it_o to_o flight_n but_o if_o it_o do_v exceed_v than_o he_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o a_o extraordinary_a help_n of_o the_o spirit_n now_o the_o unregenerate_a man_n have_v no_o power_n to_o resist_v sin_n or_o temptation_n in_o this_o case_n but_o you_o will_v say_v again_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o power_n in_o the_o regenerate_a man_n for_o the_o apostle_n say_v gal._n 5._o 17._o 2._o the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o 17._o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o the_o other_o so_o that_o you_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o you_o will_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a that_o in_o the_o most_o sanctify_a man_n thatis_o there_o be_v corruption_n and_o this_o corruption_n 2._o will_v fight_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o may_v sometime_o hinder_v good_a but_o it_o be_v then_o when_o it_o exceed_v the_o measure_n of_o grace_n he_o have_v receive_v neither_o be_v it_o always_o prevail_v in_o this_o kind_n for_o when_o it_o exceed_v not_o the_o grace_n the_o spirit_n overcome_v it_o neither_o do_v it_o always_o continue_v it_o may_v be_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o it_o can_v reign_v in_o the_o heart_n it_o may_v be_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o a_o thief_n in_o a_o house_n not_o to_o have_v residence_n and_o a_o dwell_a place_n but_o for_o a_o night_n and_o be_v go_v so_o this_o lust_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o regenerate_a man_n dwell_v not_o there_o that_o be_v it_o do_v not_o always_o hinder_v he_o from_o good_a but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o then_o depart_v but_o it_o be_v not_o thus_o with_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n sin_n take_v possession_n and_o keep_v possession_n of_o his_o heart_n the_o three_o consectary_n or_o use_n stand_v thus_o see_v the_o apostle_n say_v mortify_v that_o be_v do_v not_o only_o abstain_v from_o the_o 3_o outward_a action_n of_o sin_n but_o from_o the_o thought_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o mortification_n be_v a_o slay_v of_o the_o evil_a disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n aswell_o as_o the_o slay_v of_o the_o action_n of_o the_o body_n mortification_n be_v first_o inward_a and_o then_o outward_a hence_o we_o gather_v this_o point_n that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o a_o man_n to_o abstain_v from_o the_o action_n heart_n of_o sin_n but_o he_o must_v abstain_v from_o sin_n in_o his_o heart_n if_o he_o will_v prove_v his_o mortification_n to_o be_v true_a 2_o pet._n 2._o 14._o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o their_o eye_n be_v fullof_o adultery_n now_o lust_n be_v not_o in_o the_o eye_n but_o in_o the_o heart_n but_o by_o this_o he_o fhewe_v that_o it_o be_v the_o fullness_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o heart_n that_o fill_v the_o eye_n therefore_o look_v unto_o the_o heart_n for_o the_o action_n be_v but_o the_o branch_n but_o the_o root_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n that_o be_v whatsoever_o evil_a action_n be_v in_o the_o hand_n it_o have_v its_o first_o breed_n in_o the_o heart_n if_o therefore_o you_o will_v remove_v the_o effect_n you_o must_v first_o remove_v the_o cause_n now_o the_o cause_n if_o it_o bring_v forth_o a_o evil_a effect_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n as_o the_o cause_n of_o good_a be_v great_a than_o the_o effect_n it_o produce_v even_o so_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o heart_n because_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o evil_a action_n be_v great_a than_o the_o evil_a that_o it_o produce_v then_o think_v not_o with_o you_o self_n that_o if_o you_o abstain_v from_o the_o outward_a gross_a action_n of_o sin_n that_o sin_n be_v mortify_v in_o you_o but_o go_v first_o unto_o the_o cause_n and_o see_v whether_o that_o evil_a disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v mortify_v whether_o there_o be_v wrought_v in_o you_o a_o new_a disposition_n to_o good_a and_o a_o wither_a of_o all_o inordinate_a affection_n but_o you_o will_v say_v unto_o i_o our_o saviour_n say_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v by_o his_o work_n and_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v or_o the_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o he_o will_v judge_v the_o heart_n first_o as_o the_o cause_n and_o then_o the_o action_n as_o the_o effect_n rom._n 8._o 27._o it_o be_v say_v he_o that_o search_v the_o heart_n know_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o he_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o flesh_n that_o be_v the_o action_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a part_n now_o as_o the_o sap_n be_v great_a in_o the_o root_n than_o in_o the_o branch_n so_o the_o great_a sin_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v receive_v great_a punishment_n therefore_o if_o the_o root_n be_v not_o purge_v notwithstanding_o thou_o abstain_v from_o the_o outward_a action_n thou_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o mortify_a sin_n because_o thy_o heart_n such_o corruption_n in_o they_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o under_o the_o power_n of_o it_o neither_o do_v it_o bear_v rule_v in_o they_o let_v they_o therefore_o that_o have_v not_o set_v upon_o this_o work_n of_o mortification_n now_o begin_v to_o mortify_v their_o lust_n and_o let_v all_o those_o that_o have_v already_o begin_v continue_v in_o this_o work_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o use_n but_o mind_v thou_o shall_v lose_v thy_o spiritual_a life_n and_o riches_n and_o shall_v be_v poor_a in_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n thou_o shall_v lose_v honour_n and_o credit_n with_o god_n and_o
