life_n i_o say_v such_o as_o have_v true_a faith_n because_o no_o other_o have_v any_o possibility_n to_o enter_v and_o set_v upon_o it_o and_o if_o thou_o think_v to_o set_v upon_o the_o godly_a life_n without_o it_o thou_o shall_v offer_v to_o god_n a_o break_a piece_n of_o work_n virtue_n no_o better_o than_o the_o offering_n of_o cain_n although_o it_o shall_v seem_v to_o thyself_o to_o be_v as_o holy_a as_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o abel_n but_o if_o thou_o have_v taste_v aright_o of_o this_o gift_n of_o faith_n and_o then_o go_v about_o to_o lead_v a_o godly_a life_n thou_o be_v sound_o instruct_v in_o these_o rule_n before_o set_v down_o and_o persuade_v that_o they_o with_o the_o virtue_n here_o add_v must_v guide_v and_o help_v thou_o to_o the_o right_n perform_v of_o their_o peace_n especial_o that_o we_o be_v not_o hurt_v nor_o wound_v that_o way_n where_o there_o be_v great_a cause_n of_o fear_n and_o danger_n nor_o bring_v into_o subjection_n to_o those_o sin_n to_o the_o which_o by_o nature_n we_o be_v most_o incline_v as_o to_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n uncleanness_n break_v off_o of_o brotherly_a affection_n etc._n etc._n and_o here_o if_o at_o any_o time_n we_o shall_v be_v overtake_v which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v of_o no_o not_o of_o the_o most_o circumspect_a and_o best_a advise_v we_o resolute_o purpose_v not_o to_o sleep_v nor_o slumber_n in_o our_o sin_n neither_o promise_n to_o ourselves_o forgiveness_n too_o easy_o note_n but_o first_o to_o awake_v ourselves_o to_o be_v amaze_v that_o we_o shall_v let_v go_v the_o strength_n and_o hold_v which_o once_o we_o have_v to_o rebuke_v and_o check_v ourselves_o sharp_o till_o shame_n and_o sorrow_n for_o so_o offend_v may_v humble_v we_o and_o then_o we_o may_v be_v bold_a to_o assure_v our_o soul_n have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n jesus_n christ_n the_o righteous_a that_o we_o be_v receive_v of_o he_o again_o many_o and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o in_o this_o work_n we_o may_v more_o happy_o go_v forward_o and_o this_o watch_n be_v the_o better_o keep_v our_o purpose_n be_v to_o avoid_v careful_o all_o outward_a hindrance_n and_o to_o avoid_v occasion_n of_o quench_v god_n spirit_n in_o we_o as_o we_o shall_v have_v wisdom_n to_o see_v they_o as_o too_o far_o enter_v into_o deal_n or_o talk_n about_o the_o world_n to_o call_v ourselves_o back_o from_o all_o excess_n that_o way_n also_o unprofitable_a and_o dangerous_a company_n and_o acquaintance_n any_o unnecessary_a and_o idle_a talk_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o like_a unto_o these_o and_o contrary_o to_o be_v careful_a to_o continue_v with_o diligence_n and_o delight_n not_o only_o the_o exercise_n and_o use_v of_o such_o holy_a mean_n of_o meditation_n and_o prayer_n as_o well_o by_o ourselves_o as_o with_o other_o also_o read_v hear_v and_o conference_n etc._n etc._n but_o also_o with_o mind_n to_o reap_v fruit_n by_o the_o same_o which_o be_v not_o always_o intend_v nor_o seek_v for_o so_o oft_o as_o the_o thing_n themselves_o be_v use_v as_o for_o example_n see_v the_o ready_a and_o best_a way_n to_o nourish_v and_o continue_v this_o holy_a desire_n and_o careful_a watch_v over_o our_o heart_n be_v increase_v of_o knowledge_n by_o the_o help_n of_o hear_v and_o read_v for_o zealous_a and_o holy_a affection_n be_v like_o a_o flame_n of_o fire_n which_o without_o the_o add_v and_o put_v to_o of_o wood_n as_o new_a matter_n will_v soon_o be_v quench_v and_o extinguish_v so_o will_v our_o look_v to_o our_o heart_n and_o observe_v of_o they_o be_v loose_o and_o light_o continue_v it_o be_v our_o purpose_n to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o with_o more_o earnestness_n hereunto_o because_o we_o know_v that_o we_o shall_v otherwise_o frustrate_v and_o make_v vain_a our_o whole_a covenant_n that_o be_v to_o say_v as_o follow_v we_o do_v acknowledge_v that_o our_o negligence_n and_o unreverence_n in_o these_o have_v so_o great_o deprive_v we_o of_o fruit_n in_o understanding_n and_o judgement_n as_o well_o as_o other_o way_n that_o before_o our_o hear_n we_o trust_v we_o shall_v prepare_v our_o heart_n by_o cast_v off_o that_o which_o will_v hinder_v we_o namely_o rebellious_a gainsay_v the_o truth_n security_n hardness_n worldly_a affection_n etc._n etc._n that_o with_o meekness_n and_o teachablenesse_n we_o will_v bring_v honest_a and_o good_a heart_n to_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n &_o in_o the_o action_n itself_o be_v attentive_a and_o mark_v that_o which_o shall_v be_v teach_v so_o as_o it_o may_v work_v in_o we_o and_o raise_v up_o answerable_a affection_n to_o that_o which_o we_o shall_v hear_v as_o joy_n by_o comfortable_a doctrine_n fear_v by_o that_o which_o move_v fear_n etc._n etc._n &_o after_o we_o have_v hear_v we_o will_v beware_v that_o it_o perish_v not_o in_o we_o through_o our_o own_o default_n or_o negligence_n in_o mind_v other_o matter_n more_o than_o that_o which_o we_o have_v hear_v whereby_o we_o shall_v bury_v it_o in_o forgetfulness_n
to_o the_o which_o i_o answer_v affirm_v all_o that_o be_v say_v to_o be_v most_o true_a and_o therefore_o see_v our_o trouble_n and_o sorrow_n be_v many_o and_o great_a through_o the_o devil_n large_a a_o portion_n even_o a_o taste_n of_o the_o heavenly_a joy_n in_o this_o life_n which_o make_v his_o chastisement_n sweet_a and_o the_o yoke_n of_o his_o commandment_n easy_a unto_o they_o may_v be_v accompany_v with_o so_o many_o affliction_n as_o our_o life_n be_v subject_a to_o they_o must_v know_v that_o such_o correction_n be_v see_v by_o our_o heavenly_a father_n to_o be_v meet_a for_o we_o and_o to_o keep_v we_o from_o vain_a and_o deceitful_a reioicing_n and_o that_o these_o fatherly_a chastisement_n do_v not_o take_v away_o this_o heavenly_a comfort_n from_o we_o but_o and_o the_o pride_n of_o life_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o he_o a_o honour_n which_o king_n and_o prince_n for_o the_o most_o part_n attain_v not_o unto_o for_o many_o of_o they_o aswell_o as_o of_o other_o worship_v the_o beast_n and_o offer_v to_o he_o their_o crown_n and_o willing_o submit_v themselves_o to_o his_o slavery_n and_o this_o honour_n which_o he_o bequeathe_v to_o his_o faithful_a one_o be_v one_o commodity_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o provident_a care_n and_o fatherly_a regard_n that_o he_o have_v over_o they_o and_o yet_o in_o that_o there_o be_v no_o end_n of_o this_o but_o liberty_n they_o can_v believe_v nor_o be_v persuade_v of_o any_o such_o thing_n at_o any_o time_n neither_o dare_v they_o promise_v to_o themselves_o that_o he_o will_v be_v with_o they_o and_o be_v a_o shelter_n unto_o they_o but_o for_o want_v thereof_o they_o smart_v be_v harden_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o let_v loose_a after_o their_o own_o desire_n to_o commit_v any_o sin_n that_o their_o yet_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o perceive_v that_o they_o have_v go_v too_o far_o and_o have_v pass_v their_o bound_n in_o their_o lawful_a liberty_n eat_v drink_v recreation_n use_v of_o marriage_n pleasure_v in_o good_n trust_v in_o friend_n and_o make_v flesh_n their_o arm_n they_o return_v speedy_o as_o out_o of_o open_a and_o manifest_a sin_n and_o thereby_o become_v more_o careful_a another_o time_n and_o when_o they_o see_v how_o many_o buffet_n light_a upon_o other_o who_o have_v small_a regard_n of_o sobriety_n or_o measure_n keep_v they_o see_v their_o portion_n to_o be_v great_a in_o restrein_v themselves_o from_o that_o excess_n in_o lawful_a thing_n which_o they_o keep_v no_o measure_n in_o and_o thus_o much_o be_v say_v of_o the_o first_o part_n or_o branch_n of_o this_o privilege_n wherein_o may_v be_v see_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v offer_v great_a favour_n to_o his_o child_n to_o so_o many_o as_o esteem_v of_o it_o that_o the_o glory_n of_o present_a thing_n and_o prosperity_n in_o this_o world_n which_o undo_v many_o shall_v yet_o not_o bewitch_v nor_o deceive_v they_o but_o they_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o escape_v these_o snare_n by_o the_o spiritual_a wing_n that_o he_o have_v give_v they_o for_o that_o purpose_n to_o mount_v above_o they_o as_o godly_a joseph_n moses_n &_o many_o of_o god_n dear_a servant_n do_v before_o they_o but_o if_o it_o be_v ask_v why_o have_v he_o give_v they_o to_o one_o and_o not_o to_o another_o i_o answer_v see_v one_o set_v more_o store_n by_o it_o than_o another_o i_o speak_v it_o to_o the_o shame_n of_o those_o who_o give_v occasion_n though_o they_o be_v otherwise_o well_o to_o be_v hope_v of_o for_o the_o custom_n and_o boldness_n in_o this_o sin_n of_o intemperancy_n and_o worldliness_n edge_n so_o eagerlie_a to_o follow_v they_o in_o their_o profane_a course_n and_o the_o abundance_n of_o iniquity_n do_v cool_v their_o fervency_n in_o seek_v to_o wean_v their_o heart_n from_o such_o poison_a and_o deceitful_a bait_n and_o dainty_n as_o they_o see_v they_o so_o greedy_o to_o devour_v for_o otherwise_o though_o they_o be_v frail_a yet_o have_v receive_v a_o taste_n of_o the_o heavenly_a doctrine_n which_o be_v the_o only_a mother_n and_o nourisher_n of_o true_a sobriety_n they_o shall_v not_o so_o easy_o forget_v themselves_o and_o be_v overcome_v of_o their_o vain_a desire_n for_o if_o popish_a dream_n and_o fantasy_n without_o all_o ground_n of_o god_n word_n have_v so_o enchant_a prince_n and_o other_o person_n of_o great_a possession_n that_o they_o have_v draw_v they_o from_o their_o pomp_n and_o many_o solemnity_n into_o monastery_n and_o nunnery_n for_o the_o deceivable_a hope_n of_o salvation_n shall_v not_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n much_o more_o prevail_v with_o they_o who_o have_v have_v a_o right_a taste_n of_o it_o to_o renounce_v dangerous_a and_o unlawful_a liberty_n and_o although_o they_o be_v lead_v from_o one_o error_n to_o another_o yet_o if_o error_n may_v do_v so_o much_o with_o they_o shall_v not_o the_o truth_n do_v much_o more_o with_o the_o child_n of_o the_o truth_n to_o abide_v in_o it_o and_o be_v govern_v by_o it_o it_o be_v pity_n that_o any_o of_o the_o lord_n belove_v shall_v offer_v such_o dishonour_n to_o the_o glorious_a word_n of_o god_n as_o to_o refuse_v the_o government_n of_o it_o and_o give_v occasion_n to_o the_o unbeliever_n to_o say_v that_o god_n diet_v his_o people_n so_o mean_o in_o his_o own_o house_n that_o they_o be_v drive_v to_o eat_v with_o the_o intemperate_a at_o their_o table_n as_o it_o be_v their_o poison_a dainty_n but_o let_v this_o reproof_n make_v any_o such_o of_o god_n servant_n ashamed_a as_o have_v give_v occasion_n of_o it_o and_o let_v they_o not_o follow_v the_o excess_n of_o such_o as_o know_v no_o better_o and_o when_o they_o shall_v find_v this_o doctrine_n hard_a to_o be_v practise_v that_o be_v to_o use_v their_o prosperity_n right_o and_o sober_o if_o then_o such_o matter_n as_o this_o be_v be_v read_v and_o well_o weigh_v of_o they_o and_o the_o example_n of_o those_o which_o be_v contrarilie_o mind_v what_o bondage_n they_o be_v in_o i_o doubt_v have_v speak_v of_o and_o which_o enjoy_v the_o say_v privilege_n and_o see_v all_o god_n child_n be_v such_o as_o may_v do_v so_o therefore_o even_o they_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o many_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n one_o as_o well_o as_o another_o which_o yet_o the_o ungodly_a and_o unregenerate_a can_v escape_v for_o they_o who_o heart_n be_v cleanse_v and_o sanctify_a so_o that_o they_o true_o hate_v all_o manner_n of_o sin_n and_o more_o special_o renounce_v in_o their_o life_n the_o sin_n which_o they_o know_v who_o endeavour_n to_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o do_v all_o this_o with_o delight_n and_o with_o delight_n also_o do_v daily_o use_v the_o mean_n to_o grow_v forward_o in_o this_o course_n how_o can_v the_o plague_n and_o calamity_n take_v hold_v on_o they_o which_o do_v on_o other_o man_n who_o be_v stranger_n to_o such_o a_o course_n for_o the_o great_a and_o sore_a punishment_n and_o trouble_n that_o fall_v upon_o any_o be_v bring_v upon_o they_o by_o their_o sin_n contrary_a to_o the_o erroneous_a opinion_n of_o they_o who_o think_v that_o religion_n be_v the_o chief_a cause_n of_o trouble_n &_o they_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o and_o the_o great_a sinner_n that_o man_n be_v the_o sharp_a and_o heavy_a judgement_n outward_a or_o inward_a do_v meet_v with_o and_o take_v hold_v of_o they_o misspende_v the_o time_n in_o foolish_a jest_n idle_a and_o harmful_a talk_n in_o lightness_n in_o wantonness_n of_o the_o eye_n evil_a companionship_n etc._n etc._n for_o the_o which_o sweet_a meat_n they_o have_v afterward_o sour_a sauce_n and_o by_o those_o mean_n only_o raise_v up_o in_o their_o heart_n secret_a accusation_n check_n of_o conscience_n horror_n and_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o trouble_n which_o if_o they_o have_v be_v careful_a to_o avoid_v they_o may_v have_v live_v merry_o and_o with_o good_a contentation_n as_o other_o good_a servant_n of_o god_n have_v do_v and_o do_v who_o have_v set_v more_o by_o true_a peace_n and_o quietness_n with_o holiness_n without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o lord_n then_o to_o loose_v it_o for_o a_o little_a piece_n of_o their_o will_n 12._o and_o for_o the_o enjoy_n of_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n for_o a_o season_n but_o these_o trouble_n because_o they_o be_v inward_a be_v not_o of_o so_o many_o nor_o so_o easy_o see_v and_o discern_v as_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v although_o too_o many_o both_o godly_a and_o wicked_a do_v oft_o both_o find_v and_o feel_v they_o sin_n i_o will_v therefore_o show_v this_o in_o outward_a trouble_n how_o many_o christian_n do_v as_o well_o through_o their_o sin_n trouble_n and_o encumber_v their_o life_n with_o they_o as_o with_o the_o other_o kind_n for_o by_o their_o sin_n slanderer_n and_o in_o such_o other_o behaviour_n offensive_a and_o scandalous_a and_o do_v not_o the_o same_o bring_v ill_a report_n with_o they_o also_o do_v not_o rashness_n hot_a and_o hasty_a speech_n provoke_v one_o another_o cause_n suit_n and_o controversy_n which_o need_v never_o have_v be_v and_o render_v like_o hard_a measure_n again_o as_o have_v be_v offer_v do_v not_o debt_n and_o poverty_n arise_v of_o needless_a and_o excessive_a spend_n go_v above_o our_o ability_n in_o diet_n apparel_n purchase_v and_o build_n and_o do_v not_o he_o which_o love_v pastime_n prove_v a_o doubt_n objection_n and_o cavil_n which_o may_v be_v raise_v from_o or_o by_o occasion_n of_o the_o former_a doctrine_n as_o also_o of_o the_o answer_v thereto_o and_o now_o to_o shut_v up_o this_o treatise_n and_o the_o whole_a book_n for_o conclusion_n a_o few_o word_n in_o the_o way_n of_o exhortation_n i_o add_v both_o to_o the_o godly_a and_o godless_a and_o so_o i_o end_v to_o they_o i_o
