punnishment_n which_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o the_o jew_n be_v such_o as_o they_o have_v never_o feel_v before_o so_o the_o prophet_n desire_v to_o bewayl_v the_o same_o with_o such_o a_o measure_n of_o lamentation_n as_o never_o have_v be_v hear_v of_o before_o that_o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o mourn_a might_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a be_v full_o answerable_a to_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o misery_n in_o these_o word_n we_o may_v observe_v two_o thing_n first_o the_o mourning_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o second_o the_o object_n of_o his_o mourning_n the_o mourning_n in_o these_o word_n oh_o that_o my_o head_n be_v full_a of_o water_n and_o my_o eye_n a_o fountain_n of_o tear_n that_o i_o may_v weep_v day_n and_o night_n the_o object_n of_o his_o mourning_n be_v the_o slaughter_n of_o the_o people_n that_o i_o may_v weep_v day_n and_o night_n for_o the_o slay_v of_o the_o daughter_n of_o my_o people_n his_o mourning_n he_o set_v down_o in_o most_o pathetical_a and_o significant_a term_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o way_n of_o a_o rhetorical_a gradation_n for_o he_o that_o weep_v shed_v tear_n and_o he_o that_o shed_v tear_n must_v have_v some_o inward_a moisture_n that_o must_v be_v resolve_v into_o tear_n the_o prophet_n therefore_o frame_v &_o compose_v himself_o to_o weep_v and_o in_o weep_v to_o exceed_v measure_n &_o to_o pass_v moderation_n that_o he_o may_v not_o be_v interrupt_v in_o the_o course_n of_o his_o weep_v for_o want_n of_o matter_n to_o ministet_fw-la supply_v of_o tear_n he_o first_o wish_v that_o his_o head_n be_v full_a of_o water_n or_o rather_o that_o his_o head_n be_v resolve_v into_o water_n for_o that_o come_v near_o the_o haebrew_n original_a oh_o that_o some_o man_n will_v make_v my_o head_n to_o become_v as_o water_n in_o this_o great_a lamentation_n the_o prophet_n seem_v to_o fear_v nothing_o more_o then_o that_o his_o head_n shall_v be_v draw_v dry_a &_o that_o for_o lack_n of_o moisture_n he_o shall_v be_v constrain_v in_o time_n to_o forbear_v weep_v for_o as_o seneca_n say_v nullus_fw-la dolour_n longus_fw-la est_fw-la qui_fw-la magna_fw-la est_fw-la the_o sorrow_n that_o be_v great_a can_v be_v long_o for_o such_o be_v the_o infirmity_n of_o nature_n that_o nothing_o vehement_a or_o violent_a can_v be_v of_o long_a continuance_n see_v therefore_o that_o this_o sorrow_n be_v extraordinatie_n because_o it_o do_v arise_v of_o a_o extraordinary_a occasion_n here_o he_o set_v forth_o in_o extraordinary_a &_o hyperbolical_a form_n of_o speech_n rather_o express_v his_o desire_n how_o he_o will_v have_v it_o to_o be_v than_o any_o hope_n he_o have_v that_o it_o can_v so_o be_v &_o not_o so_o much_o declare_v what_o be_v possible_a &_o likely_a to_o be_v do_v as_o what_o be_v meet_v and_o convenient_a to_o be_v do_v the_o thing_n therefore_o that_o our_o prophet_n desire_v be_v first_o that_o his_o head_n may_v be_v full_a of_o water_n it_o be_v not_o a_o small_a quantity_n of_o water_n that_o will_v content_v he_o but_o he_o will_v have_v it_o full_o of_o water_n nay_o he_o will_v have_v it_o resolve_v into_o water_n that_o so_o long_o as_o it_o be_v a_o head_n so_o long_o it_o may_v never_o be_v without_o water_n to_o weep_v and_o wail_v for_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o people_n but_o why_o do_v he_o wish_v that_o his_o head_n be_v full_a of_o water_n and_o not_o rather_o his_o heart_n see_v the_o heart_n be_v the_o seat_n of_o all_o the_o affection_n although_o the_o heart_n be_v the_o seat_n of_o the_o affection_n yet_o the_o head_n be_v the_o seat_n of_o all_o the_o sense_n both_o inward_a and_o outward_a and_o the_o head_n as_o it_o be_v the_o high_a part_n of_o the_o body_n so_o the_o mind_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n have_v erect_v her_o throne_n therein_o &_o keep_v there_o her_o residence_n and_o from_o thence_o as_o from_o a_o watch_n tower_n apprehend_v all_o thing_n understand_v all_o thing_n and_o discern_v all_o thing_n that_o be_v bring_v unto_o she_o by_o the_o outward_a sense_n which_o be_v her_o handmaid_n this_o be_v the_o place_n where_o the_o mind_n do_v sit_v as_o queen_n and_o governor_n and_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v she_o command_v prescribe_v or_o direct_v that_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n be_v ready_a to_o execute_v and_o for_o that_o cause_n it_o be_v say_v mens_fw-la cuiusque_fw-la est_fw-la cuique_fw-la the_o mind_n of_o every_o man_n be_v the_o man_n himself_o this_o be_v that_o which_o first_o aprehend_v the_o cause_n of_o grief_n &_o sorrow_n and_o by_o &_o by_o communicate_v the_o same_o with_o the_o hart_n which_o be_v present_o move_v either_o to_o embrace_v or_o dislike_n as_o the_o mind_n judge_v the_o object_n to_o be_v good_a or_o evil_a like_a unto_o a_o porter_n who_o keep_v the_o gate_n do_v open_v it_o to_o his_o friend_n and_o shut_v it_o to_o his_o enemy_n by_o this_o the_o prophet_n in_o his_o prophetical_a spirit_n do_v foresee_v that_o horrible_a and_o bloody_a slaughter_n which_o shall_v be_v commit_v by_o the_o host_n of_o the_o chaldaean_n in_o the_o city_n of_o jerusalem_n and_o this_o do_v so_o deep_o afflict_v and_o pierce_v his_o hart_n that_o he_o can_v not_o contain_v himself_o but_o must_v needs_o break_v out_o into_o a_o most_o doleful_a lamentation_n and_o the_o better_a to_o continue_v and_o increase_v his_o coal_n the_o fire_n itself_o will_v consume_v and_o be_v extinguish_v so_o weep_v exhau_v and_o draw_v out_o tear_n and_o when_o tear_n be_v consume_v without_o supply_n weep_v itself_o must_v needs_o have_v a_o end_n and_o therefore_o that_o a_o fresh_a supply_n may_v never_o be_v want_v he_o wish_v that_o his_o head_n may_v always_o abound_v with_o water_n and_o for_o this_o purpose_n the_o head_n be_v a_o more_o fit_a member_n then_o the_o heart_n first_o because_o the_o object_n of_o the_o affection_n be_v there_o apprehend_v and_o judge_v of_o and_o according_a to_o that_o judgement_n the_o hart_n be_v affect_v second_o for_o that_o the_o head_n be_v much_o large_a and_o of_o a_o more_o capacious_a figure_n three_o because_o it_o be_v more_o apt_a to_o receive_v and_o hold_v water_n both_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o ventricle_n or_o receptacle_n of_o the_o brain_n within_o and_o also_o for_o that_o it_o be_v strong_o fence_v and_o environ_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o hard_a wall_n round_o about_o and_o last_o for_o that_o
the_o head_n have_v better_a mean_n to_o express_v the_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n of_o the_o heart_n both_o by_o mourning_n with_o the_o voice_n and_o by_o weep_v with_o the_o eye_n and_o thus_o i_o be_o come_v to_o the_o second_o point_n of_o the_o gradation_n which_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o the_o prophet_n desire_v for_o the_o better_a express_v of_o his_o great_a sorrow_n he_o do_v not_o only_o wish_v that_o his_o head_n be_v full_a of_o water_n but_o he_o declare_v the_o cause_n thereof_o which_o be_v not_o to_o keep_v it_o still_o enclose_v in_o his_o head_n but_o that_o from_o thence_o it_o may_v be_v derive_v and_o resolve_v into_o brinish_a tear_n as_o faithful_a witness_n of_o his_o inward_a grief_n and_o to_o this_o end_n he_o wish_v that_o his_o eye_n may_v be_v as_o a_o fountain_n or_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o haebrewe_n original_a a_o vain_a of_o tear_n which_o may_v be_v always_o open_a &_o never_o stop_v always_o run_v and_o never_o dry_a when_o a_o man_n will_v seek_v a_o well_o first_o he_o dig_v to_o get_v water_n and_o when_o he_o have_v find_v water_n his_o next_o care_n be_v to_o draw_v it_o out_o for_o such_o needful_a use_n as_o occasion_n require_v even_o so_o our_o prophet_n desire_n be_v first_o that_o he_o may_v have_v in_o his_o body_n a_o spring_a well_o that_o his_o head_n may_v be_v the_o conduit_n and_o for_o the_o better_a draw_v of_o this_o water_n out_o he_o wish_v in_o the_o next_o place_n that_o his_o eye_n may_v be_v as_o spout_n or_o as_o conduit_n pipe_n to_o pour_v forth_o this_o water_n and_o it_o can_v not_o be_v but_o so_o many_o as_o have_v not_o heart_n of_o flint_n must_v needs_o be_v move_v with_o astonishment_n to_o see_v and_o behold_v this_o great_a lamentation_n and_o yet_o our_o prophet_n be_v not_o content_a with_o this_o but_o he_o add_v as_o the_o three_o step_n of_o the_o gradation_n that_o i_o may_v weep_v day_n and_o night_n it_o can_v content_v he_o to_o have_v his_o head_n full_a of_o water_n it_o can_v content_v he_o that_o his_o eye_n shed_v tear_n but_o as_o though_o this_o be_v no_o weep_v to_o express_v further_o that_o all_o this_o come_v from_o the_o inward_a sense_n &_o sorrow_n of_o his_o hart_n he_o wish_v that_o he_o may_v weep_v and_o not_o simple_o weep_v but_o weep_v so_o that_o his_o eye_n may_v never_o lin_v weep_v and_o his_o eyelid_n may_v never_o close_v themselves_o to_o take_v any_o rest_n but_o be_v always_o open_a to_o weep_v day_n and_o night_n great_a be_v that_o mourning_n of_o the_o woman_n of_o bethelem_n when_o their_o child_n be_v slay_v by_o the_o cruelty_n of_o herod_n whereof_o our_o prophet_n jeremiah_n prophesi_v chap_n 31._o 15._o which_o testimony_n be_v allege_v by_o rhe_n euangelyst_a s._n matthew_n in_o the_o second_o chapter_n and_o the_o 8._o verse_n where_o he_o appli_v the_o same_o to_o that_o slaughter_n of_o herod_n who_o see_v himself_o delude_v by_o the_o wise_a man_n cause_v all_o the_o male_a child_n of_o bethlehem_n to_o be_v slay_v from_o two_o year_n old_a and_o under_o with_o intent_n to_o murder_n christ_n among_o the_o rest_n in_o ramah_n be_v a_o voice_n herd_n mourning_n and_o weep_v &_o great_a lamencation_n rachael_n weep_v for_o her_o child_n &_o will_v not_o be_v comfort_v hecause_fw-mi they_o be_v not_o but_o that_o lamentation_n although_o it_o be_v bitter_a yet_o be_v it_o not_o to_o be_v compare_v with_o this_o of_o our_o prophet_n because_o that_o be_v only_o for_o the_o loss_n of_o some_o of_o their_o child_n but_o here_o the_o prophet_n bewail_v that_o miserable_a and_o fearful_a destruction_n which_o shall_v general_o come_v upon_o all_o judah_n and_o jerusalem_n as_o well_o young_a as_o old_a wherein_o there_o shall_v scarce_o be_v any_o that_o shall_v escape_v &_o not_o perish_v either_o by_o famine_n sword_n or_o by_o pestilence_n or_o at_o least_o be_v carry_v into_o captivity_n it_o be_v much_o that_o david_n say_v of_o himself_o every_o night_n wash_v i_o my_o head_n and_o water_v my_o couch_n with_o my_o tear_n psal_n 6_o 6._o oh_o worthy_a practice_n for_o a_o penitent_a soul_n to_o imitate_v touch_v every_o sinner_n that_o groan_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o his_o sin_n to_o spend_v the_o night_n not_o in_o sleep_v but_o in_o weep_v not_o in_o slumber_v &_o drowsyne_n but_o in_o cry_v and_o call_v to_o god_n for_o mercy_n shed_v the_o tear_n of_o true_a repentance_n worthy_a also_o be_v that_o to_o be_v remember_v which_o be_v record_v of_o the_o sinful_a woman_n in_o the_o gospel_n luke_n 7._o who_o weep_v so_o abundant_o that_o she_o wash_v the_o foot_n of_o christ_n with_o the_o tear_n that_o trickle_v down_o from_o her_o eye_n but_o this_o mourning_n of_o our_o prophet_n exceed_v they_o both_o if_o not_o in_o greatness_n yet_o in_o continuance_n who_o tear_n distil_v without_o intermission_n as_o from_o the_o conduit_n of_o a_o spring_a well_o will_v be_v sufficient_a not_o only_o to_o water_v his_o couch_n or_o to_o wash_v the_o foot_n of_o those_o that_o come_v never_o he_o but_o even_o in_o time_n to_o send_v forth_o river_n of_o water_n like_o those_o whereof_o ezechiel_n speak_v chap_n 47._o which_o come_v forth_o of_o the_o temple_n be_v at_o the_o first_o measure_v up_o to_o the_o ankle_n at_o the_o second_o measure_v up_o to_o the_o loin_n but_o at_o the_o three_o measure_v the_o water_n be_v become_v as_o a_o river_n that_o can_v not_o be_v pass_v but_o why_o do_v our_o prophet_n weep_v so_o immoderate_o that_o by_o his_o shed_v of_o many_o tear_n some_o may_v drop_v out_o of_o their_o eye_n for_o the_o prophet_n weep_v not_o here_o for_o himself_o but_o for_o the_o great_a misery_n that_o shall_v come_v upon_o the_o people_n and_o though_o he_o be_v likely_a to_o sustain_v some_o part_n of_o their_o affliction_n because_o he_o dwell_v among_o they_o yet_o himself_o be_v but_o one_o &_o not_o one_o of_o the_o great_a the_o state_n of_o the_o monarchy_n rest_v in_o they_o that_o be_v in_o the_o king_n in_o the_o noble_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o people_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o public_a state_n that_o he_o bewail_v whereupon_o every_o private_a man_n condition_n depend_v as_o for_o himself_o he_o make_v no_o reckon_n and_o beside_o he_o know_v that_o god_n who_o have_v employ_v he_o in_o that_o message_n and_o have_v preserve_v the_o prophet_n do_v weep_v for_o the_o people_n stand_v it_o not_o with_o good_a reason_n that_o they_o shall_v weep_v for_o themselves_o when_o our_o saviour_n be_v lead_v to_o be_v crucify_a many_o woman_n of_o jerusalem_n follow_v he_o weep_v but_o jesus_n turn_v back_o and_o say_v unto_o they_o daughter_n of_o jerusalem_n weep_v not_o for_o i_o but_o weep_v for_o yourselves_o and_o for_o have_v the_o great_a love_n notwithstanding_o such_o be_v the_o ingratitude_n of_o the_o jewish_a nation_n such_o be_v their_o impiety_n against_o god_n their_o cruelty_n against_o his_o prophet_n and_o their_o impenitency_n in_o their_o sin_n that_o the_o lord_n be_v determine_v utter_o to_o root_v they_o out_o from_o be_v a_o nation_n and_o for_o ever_o to_o cut_v they_o off_o from_o be_v a_o people_n and_o this_o he_o perform_v about_o forty_o year_n after_o by_o titus_n the_o son_n of_o vespasian_n the_o roman_a emperor_n who_o bring_v a_o final_a destruction_n upon_o the_o jew_n and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o when_o our_o saviour_n be_v come_v never_o to_o jerusalem_n and_o behold_v the_o city_n he_o weep_v for_o it_o luke_n 19_o 41_o and_o in_o another_o place_n he_o say_v o_o jerusalem_n jerusalem_n which_o kill_v the_o prophet_n and_o stone_v they_o that_o be_v send_v unto_o thou_o how_o often_o will_v i_o have_v gather_v thy_o child_n together_o as_o the_o hen_n gather_v her_o chicken_n under_o her_o wing_n and_o you_o will_v not_o behold_v your_o habitation_n shall_v be_v leave_v unto_o you_o desolate_a
mat._n 23_o 37._o by_o this_o complaint_n it_o appear_v that_o though_o our_o saviour_n mourn_v for_o the_o city_n of_o jerusalem_n yet_o the_o people_n of_o jerusalem_n have_v the_o great_a cause_n to_o bewail_v their_o own_o misery_n our_o prophet_n therefore_o in_o weep_v for_o the_o people_n he_o set_v they_o a_o precedent_n and_o rule_n to_o follow_v it_o be_v their_o punishment_n that_o strike_v his_o hart_n with_o this_o inward_a sorrow_n and_o cause_v his_o eye_n to_o shed_v tear_n and_o therefore_o he_o frame_v himself_o to_o weep_v that_o by_o his_o weep_n he_o may_v wring_v tear_n out_o of_o their_o eye_n but_o ought_v not_o every_o man_n to_o be_v move_v most_o with_o that_o which_o most_o concern_v himself_o why_o then_o be_v our_o prophet_n touch_v with_o a_o more_o lively_a sense_n of_o the_o jewish_a calamity_n than_o the_o jew_n that_o be_v to_o feel_v the_o smart_n thereof_o why_o do_v he_o not_o wish_v that_o their_o head_n be_v full_a of_o water_n and_o their_o eye_n fountain_n of_o tear_n that_o they_o may_v weep_v day_n and_o night_n for_o the_o destruction_n that_o shall_v come_v upon_o themselves_o oh_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v &_o that_o make_v our_o prophet_n to_o mourn_v the_o more_o he_o have_v rebuke_v they_o for_o their_o sin_n but_o they_o will_v not_o amend_v he_o have_v denounce_v god_n judgement_n but_o they_o despise_v his_o threaten_n when_o the_o false_a prophet_n flatter_v they_o with_o peace_n peace_n to_o they_o they_o hearken_v it_o be_v say_v of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n concern_v the_o jew_n that_o he_o do_v mourn_v for_o the_o hardness_n of_o their_o heart_n mark_v 3._o 5._o and_o here_o our_o prophet_n jeremiah_n when_o nothing_o will_v prevail_v he_o take_v himself_o to_o mourning_n in_o this_o place_n we_o see_v how_o needful_a it_o be_v that_o faithful_a pastor_n be_v place_v among_o the_o people_n when_o they_o be_v ignorant_a to_o teach_v they_o when_o they_o sin_n to_o admonish_v they_o when_o admonition_n will_v not_o serve_v to_o terrify_v they_o with_o god_n judgment_n when_o nothing_o will_v prevalle_v to_o mourn_v for_o they_o the_o dumb_a dog_n &_o the_o idle_a nonresidents_a do_v none_o of_o these_o thing_n the_o one_o can_v and_o the_o other_o will_v not_o and_o both_o of_o they_o have_v be_v the_o destruction_n of_o many_o thousand_o soul_n which_o will_v one_o day_n be_v require_v at_o both_o of_o their_o hand_n but_o what_o shall_v the_o faithful_a minister_n do_v shall_v they_o tell_v the_o drunkard_n what_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n say_v unto_o they_o wo_n unto_o they_o that_o rise_v uppe_o early_o to_o follow_v drunkenness_n and_o to_o they_o that_o continue_v until_o night_n till_o the_o wine_n do_v inflame_v they_o isa_n 5_o 11._o wo_n unto_o they_o that_o
