itself_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o the_o other_o there_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o communication_n of_o the_o divine_a will_n on_o god_n part_n nor_o any_o more_o than_o the_o homage_n of_o move_v no_o more_o be_v want_n of_o evidence_n which_o such_o a_o soul_n have_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o his_o love_n simple_a goodness_n and_o excellency_n in_o a_o object_n be_v not_o attractive_a of_o the_o soul_n but_o goodness_n apprehend_v by_o evidence_v and_o appear_v to_o we_o all_o the_o apprehension_n that_o it_o be_v possible_a a_o natural_a man_n shall_v have_v of_o the_o love_n of_o faint_a according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o opinion_n that_o cause_v it_o 4._o by_o this_o also_o christian_n may_v be_v able_a to_o take_v some_o measure_n and_o make_v up_o some_o judgement_n of_o themselves_o whether_o the_o desire_n they_o find_v in_o their_o soul_n after_o christ_n and_o his_o love_n be_v such_o as_o be_v peculiar_a to_o the_o soul_n of_o believer_n yea_o or_o no._n be_v desire_n after_o christ_n and_o his_o love_n in_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n commensurate_a to_o that_o knowledge_n which_o he_o have_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o they_o but_o this_o will_v speak_v nothing_o of_o good_a to_o the_o soul_n only_o such_o desire_n as_o flow_v from_o a_o christian_n knowledge_n of_o faith_n and_o from_o experience_n he_o that_o have_v only_o a_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o love_n from_o read_v the_o word_n or_o from_o the_o report_n of_o minister_n may_v so_o far_o desire_v christ_n love_n as_o may_v serve_v he_o for_o his_o own_o end_n nay_o though_o he_o have_v no_o great_a faith_n as_o to_o that_o eternal_a state_n of_o happiness_n to_o which_o christ_n bring_v the_o soul_n but_o have_v only_o receive_v notion_n of_o such_o ablessed_a state_n to_o which_o he_o give_v no_o great_a credit_n yet_o for_o his_o own_o security_n because_o his_o notion_n may_v be_v true_a though_o he_o have_v no_o great_a fix_a persuasion_n of_o they_o he_o may_v yet_o desire_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n so_o far_o as_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o
god_n even_o the_o god_n of_o israel_n only_o he_o desire_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v be_v merciful_a to_o he_o as_o to_o his_o bow_v down_o in_o the_o house_n of_o rimmon_n they_o be_v neither_o uniform_a nor_o steady_a and_o constant_a in_o their_o service_n of_o god_n they_o seem_v to_o run_v in_o public_a duty_n but_o follow_v they_o into_o their_o family_n and_o closet_n there_o they_o satisfy_v themselves_o that_o they_o run_v in_o any_o sense_n it_o will_v be_v inquire_v from_o whence_o they_o be_v hinder_v whether_o from_o some_o cause_n from_o within_o or_o from_o without_o 1._o a_o man_n may_v be_v hinder_v in_o his_o bodily_a run_v by_o some_o inward_a obstruction_n bodily_a decay_n or_o weakness_n this_o must_v be_v cure_v or_o purge_v out_o christian_n ought_v to_o search_v whether_o they_o have_v no_o secret_a lust_n no_o love_n to_o the_o world_n no_o greedy_a desire_n to_o be_v rich_a nothing_o of_o sensuality_n which_o weaken_v their_o soul_n and_o keep_v you_o there_o be_v no_o soul_n that_o live_v under_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o be_v draw_v draw_v by_o exhortation_n argument_n promise_n of_o reward_n etc._n etc._n the_o proper_a cord_n of_o a_o man._n nay_o there_o be_v none_o among_o the_o heathen_n but_o be_v draw_v by_o the_o cord_n of_o common_a gracious_a providence_n god_n say_v the_o apostle_n leave_v not_o they_o without_o witness_n now_o though_o none_o of_o these_o cord_n be_v sufficient_a to_o draw_v the_o soul_n home_o to_o christ_n yet_o they_o be_v sufficient_a with_o that_o power_n which_o be_v leave_v in_o the_o will_n of_o man_n to_o engage_v he_o to_o many_o act_n of_o reformation_n and_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o act_n of_o moral_a discipline_n yea_o and_o of_o religion_n too_o that_o part_n of_o it_o which_o lie_v in_o bodily_a exercise_n if_o man_n will_v not_o do_v what_o they_o have_v a_o power_n to_o do_v how_o shall_v their_o destruction_n be_v from_o god_n for_o deny_v they_o his_o special_a grace_n especial_o when_o we_o say_v that_o although_o the_o good_a use_n of_o common_a grace_n merit_v nothing_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n yet_o god_n do_v never_o deny_v his_o special_a grace_n but_o where_o common_a grace_n be_v first_o wilful_o abuse_v and_o thus_o the_o destruction_n of_o sinner_n lie_v at_o their_o own_o door_n not_o because_o that_o if_o they_o a_o ingenious_a child_n fanci_v the_o like_a of_o knowledge_n both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o may_v desire_v these_o thing_n at_o a_o distance_n the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n may_v wish_v he_o have_v such_o a_o estate_n and_o the_o scholar_n may_v wish_v he_o have_v such_o degree_n of_o learning_n and_o knowledge_n but_o till_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o have_v attain_v what_o they_o desire_v in_o some_o degree_n they_o can_v rejoice_v in_o it_o neither_o be_v their_o mind_n satisfy_v nor_o at_o rest_n it_o be_v the_o same_o case_n as_o to_o a_o spiritual_a man_n he_o be_v enlighten_v to_o see_v he_o have_v a_o soul_n of_o a_o further_a capacity_n than_o the_o most_o man_n understand_v their_o soul_n to_o be_v that_o he_o have_v some_o further_a want_n than_o the_o most_o understand_v that_o they_o have_v he_o believe_v the_o scripture_n and_o understand_v that_o he_o want_v peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n he_o understand_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o resurrection_n a_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o that_o he_o must_v one_o day_n be_v in_o a_o happy_a or_o in_o a_o miserable_a eternity_n so_o as_o he_o want_v the_o security_n of_o a_o better_a life_n when_o this_o life_n shall_v be_v at_o a_o end_n upon_o this_o account_n he_o may_v be_v please_v with_o the_o thought_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o by_o who_o these_o good_a thing_n alone_o can_v be_v obtain_v he_o may_v desire_v christ_n he_o may_v hope_v in_o he_o but_o till_o he_o come_v to_o apprehend_v that_o he_o have_v obtain_v a_o part_n and_o interest_n in_o he_o it_o be_v impossible_a he_o shall_v rejoice_v in_o he_o and_o according_a to_o his_o apprehension_n of_o his_o interest_n so_o be_v his_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v in_o christ_n there_o must_v be_v some_o union_n betwixt_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o object_n before_o there_o can_v be_v any_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v 1._o there_o be_v a_o union_n of_o contemplation_n we_o can_v so_o much_o as_o contemplate_v a_o desirable_a object_n but_o our_o soul_n must_v have_v some_o union_n with_o it_o and_o there_o will_v a_o proportionable_a joy_n attend_v this_o indeed_o this_o will_v be_v of_o all_o other_o the_o weak_a in_o degree_n because_o this_o be_v the_o low_a degree_n of_o union_n imaginable_a thus_o a_o man_n may_v rejoice_v in_o the_o contemplation_n of_o a_o door_n of_o salvation_n open_v to_o mankind_n by_o christ_n before_o he_o have_v make_v any_o use_n of_o it_o at_o all_o to_o enter_v in_o thereat_o thus_o the_o angel_n at_o the_o birth_n of_o christ_n proclaim_v glad_a tiding_n and_o joy_n to_o all_o people_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o union_n of_o hope_n when_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o only_o contemplate_v some_o great_a and_o eminent_a good_a but_o apprehend_v it_o attainable_a by_o union_n of_o sensible_a possession_n or_o which_o be_v the_o fame_n of_o faith_n and_o full_a persuasion_n which_o make_v thing_n unseen_a visible_a to_o we_o and_o as_o this_o of_o all_o other_o be_v the_o most_o full_a and_o perfect_a union_n so_o it_o cause_v the_o most_o full_a and_o perfect_a joy_n it_o most_o satisfy_v the_o soul_n and_o bring_v it_o most_o to_o its_o rest_n and_o cause_v the_o great_a triumph_n and_o festival_n in_o the_o soul_n even_o a_o peace_n which_o be_v past_o all_o understanding_n there_o be_v no_o believer_n but_o have_v obtain_v one_o of_o the_o two_o latter_a union_n with_o christ_n no_o unbeliever_n that_o have_v obtain_v more_o than_o the_o former_a a_o unbeliever_n may_v have_v hear_v that_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v they_o rather_o than_o christ_n for_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n bestow_v upon_o they_o the_o woman_n luk._n 11._o 27._o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o first_o that_o hear_v christ_n speak_v lift_v up_o her_o eminency_n of_o grace_n in_o christ_n who_o have_v give_v they_o such_o a_o proportion_n but_o let_v christ_n still_o be_v great_a in_o the_o throne_n than_o the_o great_a saint_n upon_o the_o earth_n admire_v he_o and_o follow_v he_o but_o that_o will_v be_v a_o three_o branch_n of_o application_n 3_o what_o you_o have_v hear_v methinks_v shall_v send_v you_o all_o away_o fill_v with_o the_o admiration_n of_o christ_n pant_v with_o desire_n after_o christ_n and_o fill_v with_o the_o love_n of_o he_o 1._o i_o say_v first_o fill_v with_o the_o admiration_n of_o christ_n have_v you_o at_o any_o time_n see_v a_o eminent_a christian_a abound_v with_o love_n to_o god_n zeal_n for_o he_o clothe_v with_o humility_n bury_v in_o self-denial_n adorn_v with_o any_o grace_n which_o have_v make_v other_o to_o he_o and_o will_v you_o not_o admire_v that_o fountain_n from_o whence_o all_o these_o stream_n be_v derive_v be_v he_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n that_o gaze_v upon_o a_o twinkle_a star_n and_o admire_v the_o lustre_n of_o it_o and_o look_n upon_o the_o sun_n without_o any_o admiration_n at_o all_o oh_o admire_v christ_n to_o who_o all_o create_a perfection_n be_v no_o more_o than_o so_o many_o drop_n of_o water_n to_o the_o ocean_n so_o many_o grain_n of_o sand_n to_o a_o mountain_n so_o many_o slender_a beam_n to_o the_o body_n of_o light_n in_o the_o sun_n 2._o shall_v
