roman_a orator_n tell_v caesar_n that_o of_o all_o his_o many_o virtue_n none_o be_v either_o more_o acceptable_a or_o more_o wonderful_a than_o his_o mercy_n and_o clemency_n he_o may_v perhaps_o compliment_v the_o emperor_n but_o say_v nothing_o extraordinary_a of_o the_o virtue_n as_o will_v further_o appear_v by_o consider_v second_o the_o great_a reasonableness_n and_o usefulness_n of_o it_o as_o to_o the_o former_a beside_o that_o all_o that_o which_o may_v be_v say_v in_o the_o behalf_n of_o charity_n and_o universal_a love_n may_v be_v allege_v as_o well_o for_o this_o there_o be_v these_o two_o more_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a ground_n to_o prove_v and_o enforce_v it_o i._o to_o consider_v what_o man_n have_v receive_v ii_o to_o consider_v what_o he_o expect_v and_o first_o if_o we_o consider_v what_o man_n have_v already_o receive_v this_o virtue_n of_o mercy_n will_v appear_v to_o be_v high_o reasonable_a man_n have_v receive_v innumerable_a mercy_n of_o god_n some_o of_o which_o be_v so_o great_a so_o surprise_v and_o incredible_a that_o it_o be_v make_v one_o of_o the_o great_a trial_n and_o commendation_n of_o his_o faith_n to_o believe_v they_o such_o as_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o hypostatick_a union_n the_o redemption_n from_o sin_n and_o misery_n by_o the_o death_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n the_o grace_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o like_a all_o which_o be_v yet_o improve_v and_o heighten_v by_o this_o further_a consideration_n that_o they_o be_v proper_a and_o peculiar_a to_o he_o no_o other_o creature_n not_o so_o much_o as_o the_o angel_n themselves_o being_n partaker_n with_o he_o the_o angel_n indeed_o as_o all_o other_o creature_n partake_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n but_o man_n alone_o among_o all_o the_o creature_n have_v the_o privilege_n to_o be_v the_o object_n of_o his_o mercy_n since_o therefore_o man_n and_o man_n only_o have_v receive_v so_o much_o mercy_n of_o god_n it_o appear_v very_o reasonable_a that_o he_o of_o all_o creature_n shall_v show_v mercy_n as_o it_o will_v second_o if_o we_o consider_v what_o he_o expect_v man_n have_v not_o yet_o receive_v so_o much_o mercy_n but_o that_o he_o expect_v more_o the_o mercy_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v be_v by_o the_o redemption_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v put_v into_o a_o capacity_n of_o salvation_n but_o the_o mercy_n that_o he_o expect_v be_v to_o be_v actual_o save_v the_o court_n of_o mercy_n be_v the_o only_a court_n where_o man_n dare_v appear_v or_o can_v abide_v a_o trial._n brief_o man_n expect_v mercy_n both_o from_o god_n and_o from_o man_n in_o this_o life_n and_o in_o the_o next_o in_o death_n and_o after_o death_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n to_o conclude_v that_o he_o of_o all_o creature_n shall_v he_o merciful_a and_o that_o cruelty_n be_v as_o little_o make_v for_o man_n as_o pride_n nor_o be_v this_o affection_n less_o useful_a than_o reasonable_a the_o condition_n of_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v such_o as_o make_v it_o as_o necessary_a for_o he_o to_o be_v pitiful_a as_o to_o be_v a_o sociable_a creature_n man_n can_v subsist_v without_o the_o guardianship_n and_o protection_n of_o society_n nor_o be_v society_n any_o security_n without_o this_o affection_n for_o what_o signify_v strength_n and_o ability_n and_o society_n as_o such_o infer_v no_o more_o without_o inclination_n to_o assist_v the_o wise_a man_n tell_v we_o that_o wisdom_n be_v better_a than_o strength_n eccl._n 9_o 16._o and_o it_o be_v very_o true_a but_o neither_o of_o they_o nor_o both_o of_o they_o signify_v any_o thing_n without_o a_o tender_a and_o compassionate_a temper_n then_o only_o may_v we_o expect_v happiness_n and_o defence_n from_o society_n when_o there_o be_v the_o same_o sympathy_n in_o the_o politic_a as_o there_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a body_n when_o there_o be_v a_o mutual_a correspondency_n and_o communication_n of_o part_n like_o the_o sympathetick_a answer_n of_o one_o lute_n to_o another_o when_o the_o heaven_n hear_v the_o earth_n in_o the_o prophet_n phrase_n or_o as_o the_o apostle_n more_o full_o express_v it_o when_o if_o one_o member_n suffer_v all_o the_o member_n suffer_v with_o it_o or_o if_o one_o member_n be_v honour_v all_o the_o member_n rejoice_v with_o it_o 1_o cor._n 12._o 26._o this_o will_v make_v a_o millennium_n indeed_o nor_o be_v any_o thing_n further_o want_v but_o only_o that_o man_n will_v agree_v together_o to_o make_v the_o experiment_n and_o because_o this_o be_v a_o passion_n of_o so_o great_a use_n and_o necessity_n to_o the_o present_a condition_n of_o man_n god_n have_v be_v please_v to_o take_v a_o early_a and_o a_o effectual_a care_n for_o the_o security_n of_o it_o not_o only_o by_o give_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n a_o original_a bent_n and_o inclination_n that_o way_n but_o also_o by_o dispose_v he_o to_o it_o by_o the_o very_a make_n and_o figuration_n of_o his_o body_n that_o so_o the_o whole_a man_n may_v stand_v incline_v to_o show_v mercy_n and_o compassion_n for_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v some_o natural_a disposition_n in_o the_o brain_n whereby_o we_o be_v move_v and_o admonish_v to_o be_v pitiful_a and_o compassionate_a since_o the_o course_n of_o the_o animal_n spirit_n be_v by_o i_o know_v not_o what_o principle_n direct_v to_o those_o part_n whereby_o we_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o the_o sense_n of_o other_o pain_n or_o misery_n for_o as_o experience_n witness_n whenever_o we_o happen_v to_o cast_v our_o eye_n upon_o a_o man_n that_o be_v wound_v we_o find_v a_o sudden_a tide_n of_o spirit_n throng_v towards_o those_o part_n of_o our_o body_n which_o answer_n to_o the_o part_n affect_v of_o the_o wound_a man_n unless_o by_o some_o accidental_a cause_n their_o course_n be_v divert_v some_o other_o way_n and_o these_o motion_n by_o which_o the_o part_n of_o our_o own_o body_n be_v affect_v by_o the_o occasion_n of_o those_o motion_n which_o be_v excite_v in_o other_o do_v raise_v that_o sentiment_n within_o we_o which_o we_o call_v pity_n or_o compassion_n which_o by_o a_o order_n of_o god_n establishment_n we_o can_v no_o more_o help_n be_v affect_v with_o than_o we_o can_v that_o our_o animal_n spirit_n shall_v flow_v to_o and_o affect_v those_o part_n of_o our_o body_n which_o correspond_v to_o those_o of_o another_o which_o we_o see_v wound_v so_o that_o you_o see_v the_o ground_n and_o foundation_n of_o this_o affection_n be_v lay_v in_o nature_n god_n have_v bind_v it_o upon_o we_o by_o a_o natural_a as_o well_o as_o by_o a_o moral_a law_n by_o the_o very_a figure_n and_o contexture_n of_o our_o body_n which_o certain_o he_o will_v not_o have_v do_v but_o that_o he_o know_v how_o useful_a and_o necessary_a it_o be_v for_o the_o interest_n of_o mankind_n in_o their_o present_a posture_n which_o be_v a_o state_n of_o want_n and_o mutual_a dependence_n upon_o each_o other_o whereby_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o one_o another_o pity_n and_o compassion_n and_o now_o if_o this_o divine_a affection_n for_o so_o we_o may_v now_o venture_v to_o call_v it_o be_v not_o yet_o sufficient_o recommend_v from_o its_o nobleness_n and_o excellency_n and_o from_o its_o great_a reasonableness_n and_o usefulness_n let_v we_o further_o add_v the_o particular_a blessedness_n here_o assign_v to_o it_o bless_a be_v the_o merciful_a say_v our_o saviour_n for_o they_o shall_v obtain_v mercy_n this_o they_o shall_v obtain_v from_o man_n and_o from_o god_n here_o and_o hereafter_o first_o they_o shall_v obtain_v mercy_n from_o man_n here_o not_o that_o this_o be_v to_o pass_v for_o a_o absolute_a rule_n without_o any_o exception_n since_o as_o long_o as_o man_n be_v but_o man_n mercy_n be_v capable_a of_o be_v abuse_v and_o ill-requited_n as_o well_o as_o any_o other_o virtue_n otherwise_o our_o saviour_n will_v have_v be_v more_o kind_o treat_v than_o he_o be_v by_o the_o jew_n but_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o nothing_o do_v more_o natural_o recommend_v a_o man_n to_o the_o good_a will_n and_o compassion_n of_o other_o than_o a_o merciful_a and_o benign_a temper_n and_o that_o general_o speak_v if_o man_n be_v but_o tolerable_o well_o dispose_v and_o have_v any_o sense_n of_o justice_n and_o gratitude_n the_o merciful_a man_n will_v actual_o find_v mercy_n among_o they_o however_o if_o not_o he_o have_v the_o great_a stock_n of_o mercy_n to_o come_v for_o second_o the_o merciful_a shall_v obtain_v mercy_n from_o god_n hereafter_o and_o this_o do_v not_o depend_v upon_o so_o many_o casualty_n and_o such_o uncertain_a supposition_n as_o the_o other_o here_o it_o be_v only_o require_v that_o mercy_n and_o truth_n meet_v together_o and_o that_o the_o man_n be_v sincere_a and_o upright_a in_o all_o other_o moral_a respect_n and_o so_o much_o indeed_o be_v necessary_a for_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v think_v that_o mercy_n
conceive_v these_o two_o general_a way_n of_o disturb_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n either_o by_o impose_v unlawful_a or_o unreasonable_a term_n of_o communion_n or_o by_o refuse_v to_o comply_v with_o such_o as_o be_v lawful_a and_o reasonable_a that_o the_o first_o of_o these_o be_v a_o breach_n of_o the_o church_n peace_n there_o can_v be_v no_o doubt_n because_o it_o introduce_v a_o necessity_n of_o separation_n and_o that_o the_o latter_a be_v so_o be_v as_o plain_a because_o it_o be_v a_o separation_n without_o any_o necessity_n for_o for_o it_o either_o of_o these_o be_v schism_n who_o notion_n as_o all_o agree_v consist_v either_o in_o make_v a_o necessity_n of_o separation_n or_o in_o separate_n without_o necessity_n the_o first_o of_o these_o will_v fall_v heavy_a upon_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n who_o as_o it_o have_v be_v sufficient_o make_v good_a against_o she_o have_v bring_v in_o a_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o separation_n by_o impose_v such_o notorious_o unlawful_a and_o unreasonable_a term_n of_o communion_n the_o latter_a will_v light_v upon_o all_o those_o who_o separate_v from_o such_o part_n of_o the_o reformation_n where_o they_o may_v lawful_o communicate_v more_o especial_o it_o will_v light_v heavy_a than_o ordinary_a upon_o all_o those_o sectary_n among_o we_o who_o now_o divide_v from_o the_o church_n of_o england_n the_o term_n of_o who_o communion_n as_o have_v be_v undeniable_o prove_v and_o maintain_v be_v not_o only_o lawful_a but_o high_o reasonable_a and_o of_o a_o excellent_a constitution_n i_o need_v not_o here_o nor_o be_v it_o my_o design_n to_o set_v myself_o profess_o to_o make_v out_o the_o charge_n of_o schism_n against_o the_o dissenter_n and_o separatist_n from_o the_o church_n of_o england_n it_o have_v be_v do_v over_o and_o over_o to_o the_o utmost_a degree_n of_o evidence_n and_o the_o whole_a circle_n of_o the_o reform_a church_n cry_v out_o upon_o they_o for_o their_o unreasonable_a separation_n only_o i_o will_v desire_v they_o to_o try_v themselves_o and_o their_o cause_n by_o that_o one_o plain_a apostolical_a canon_n before_o mention_v and_o see_v whether_o they_o can_v justify_v themselves_o by_o that_o single_a measure_n it_o be_v this_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a as_o much_o as_o lie_v in_o you_o live_v peaceable_o with_o all_o man_n rom._n 12._o 18._o if_o with_o all_o man_n then_o certain_o much_o more_o with_o body_n and_o society_n of_o man_n much_o more_o with_o our_o governor_n and_o superior_n much_o more_o yet_o with_o the_o church_n the_o most_o sacred_a and_o most_o eminent_a of_o all_o society_n and_o if_o as_o far_o as_o be_v possible_a then_o certain_o as_o far_o as_o be_v lawful_a but_o now_o i_o will_v ask_v our_o dissenter_n and_o separatist_n this_o one_o question_n and_o appeal_v to_o their_o conscience_n as_o well_o as_o to_o their_o practice_n for_o a_o answer_n do_v they_o live_v peaceable_o with_o the_o church_n of_o aggravate_v thing_n that_o they_o do_v the_o quite_o contrary_a and_o divide_v from_o we_o as_o far_o as_o possible_a and_o as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v it_o be_v very_o notorious_a that_o they_o run_v from_o we_o as_o far_o they_o can_v measure_v their_o purity_n and_o sanctity_n by_o their_o distance_n from_o we_o and_o condemn_v and_o difuse_v many_o thing_n mere_o because_o we_o approve_v and_o use_v they_o but_o i_o need_v not_o take_v advantage_n of_o this_o though_o it_o be_v too_o notorious_a to_o be_v deny_v as_o well_o as_o too_o scandalous_a to_o be_v defend_v i_o only_o demand_v do_v they_o live_v peaceable_o with_o the_o church_n as_o far_o as_o be_v possible_a and_o as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v they_o can_v with_o any_o modesty_n say_v that_o they_o able_a to_o show_v any_o thing_n unlawful_a in_o our_o communion_n so_o they_o now_o general_o allow_v it_o to_o be_v lawful_a and_o according_o will_n afford_v we_o their_o company_n now_o and_o then_o upon_o occasion_n as_o often_o as_o they_o think_v fit_a to_o do_v we_o that_o honour_n well_o then_o if_o our_o communion_n be_v lawful_a then_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o they_o to_o they_o lie_v and_o consequent_o by_o virtue_n of_o this_o plain_a apostolical_a canon_n stand_v full_o convict_v of_o schism_n and_o let_v they_o bring_v themselves_o off_o if_o they_o can_v i_o be_o this_o to_o be_v one_o of_o the_o characteristic_o of_o the_o messiah_n his_o reign_n and_o observe_v withal_o nothing_o like_o it_o in_o the_o christian_a state_n but_o rather_o a_o perfect_a reverse_n of_o all_o this_o and_o not_o be_v able_a to_o distinguish_v with_o some_o between_o the_o design_n and_o natural_a genius_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n and_o the_o accidental_a the_o question_n will_v be_v about_o the_o consequence_n of_o his_o argument_n whether_o actual_a assent_n from_o every_o individual_a be_v necessary_a to_o the_o supposition_n of_o innate_a apprehension_n and_o to_o think_v once_o again_o it_o be_v a_o deference_n owe_v to_o every_o author_n to_o suppose_v that_o he_o best_o understand_v his_o own_o mean_v but_o from_o you_o gentleman_n who_o stand_v upon_o the_o same_o level_n with_o i_o i_o expect_v reason_n and_o to_o be_v show_v where_o and_o how_o i_o have_v mistake_v he_o for_o the_o present_a i_o be_o rather_o apt_a to_o think_v that_o i_o have_v comprehend_v mr._n lock_n be_v sense_n well_o enough_o but_o that_o you_o understand_v neither_o i_o nor_o mr._n lock_n paragr_n 2._o he_o upbraid_v mr._n lock_v of_o attempt_v to_o treat_v of_o idea_n without_o define_v what_o he_o understand_v by_o this_o word_n here_o be_v a_o false_a report_n i_o do_v not_o censure_n mr._n lock_v for_o undertake_v to_o discourse_n of_o idea_n without_o premise_v a_o definition_n of_o the_o name_n o●_n word_n for_o that_o i_o grant_v he_o have_v do_v but_o for_o offer_v to_o account_v for_o their_o origination_n without_o give_v a_o definition_n or_o any_o account_n of_o the_o thing_n my_o word_n be_v but_o sure_o by_o all_o the_o law_n of_o method_n in_o the_o world_n he_o ought_v first_o to_o have_v define_v what_o he_o mean_v by_o idea_n and_o to_o have_v acquaint_v we_o with_o their_o nature_n before_o he_o proceed_v to_o account_v for_o their_o origination_n and_o again_o this_o therefore_o ought_v to_o have_v be_v his_o first_o and_o indeed_o main_a business_n to_o have_v give_v we_o a_o account_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o idea_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o only_o neglect_v in_o its_o proper_a place_n but_o whole_o omit_v and_o pass_v over_o in_o deep_a silence_n which_o i_o can_v but_o remark_n as_o a_o fundamental_a defect_n in_o this_o work_n what_o be_v it_o pray_v that_o be_v here_o remark_v as_o a_o fundamental_a defect_n not_o sure_o his_o not_o define_v the_o term_n idea_n for_o that_o i_o grant_v pag._n 22._o where_o i_o say_v that_o so_o much_o my_o lexicon_n will_v have_v tell_v i_o but_o his_o giving_z no_o account_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o idea_n that_o be_v there_o remark_v as_o a_o fundamental_a defect_n and_o i_o find_v no_o cause_n yet_o to_o think_v otherwise_o ibid._n but_o mr._n norris_n may_v see_v that_o he_o be_v mistake_v if_o he_o will_v read_v over_o again_o the_o end_n of_o the_o first_o chapter_n of_o book_n i._o where_o the_o author_n beg_v his_o reader_n leave_v etc._n etc._n mistake_v indeed_o if_o he_o have_v charge_v the_o author_n with_o not_o define_v the_o term_n idea_n but_o not_o at_o all_o mistake_v in_o case_n the_o thing_n charge_v upon_o he_o be_v the_o not_o define_v the_o nature_n of_o idea_n for_o of_o that_o the_o author_n give_v no_o account_n neither_o in_o the_o place_n these_o gentleman_n refer_v to_o nor_o any_o where_o else_o ibid._n it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o he_o viz._n mr._n lock_v to_o show_v in_o what_o manner_n or_o if_o you_o will_v on_o what_o occasion_n we_o come_v to_o have_v different_a idea_n without_o its_o be_v necessary_a to_o speak_v of_o the_o idea_n themselves_o here_o be_v a_o implicit_a concession_n that_o mr._n lock_n do_v not_o undertake_v to_o open_v the_o nature_n of_o idea_n and_o withal_o that_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n lay_v to_o his_o charge_n which_o sufficient_o clear_v the_o reflecter_n from_o the_o pretend_a mistake_n but_o then_o withal_o it_o be_v affirm_v here_o that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n he_o shall_v undertake_v such_o a_o account_n now_o this_o be_v matter_n of_o judgement_n not_o of_o report_n the_o thing_n must_v be_v a_o little_a argue_v these_o gentleman_n say_v it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v how_o we_o come_v by_o our_o idea_n without_o speak_v of_o the_o idea_n themselves_o against_o this_o i_o contend_v it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a it_o be_v impossible_a to_o give_v any_o satisfactory_a account_n how_o we_o come_v by_o they_o till_o their_o nature_n be_v in_o some_o measure_n discover_v for_o how_o can_v any_o thing_n be_v affirm_v or_o deny_v of_o any_o thing_n unless_o its_o nature_n be_v know_v how_o can_v any_o attribute_n be_v give_v with_o any_o certainty_n to_o a_o unknown_a subject_n indeed_o when_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v sufficient_o know_v and_o agree_v upon_o we_o need_v only_o define_v the_o term_n whereby_o we_o express_v it_o as_o when_o it_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v know_v what_o the_o nature_n of_o a_o angle_n be_v i_o need_v only_o say_v that_o a_o triangle_n be_v that_o which_o have_v three_o angle_n which_o be_v the_o riason_n why_o euclid_n in_o his_o geometry_n think_v himself_o concern_v only_o to_o give_v nominal_a definition_n for_o the_o nature_n of_o figure_n be_v evident_o know_v we_o see_v the_o very_a essence_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o there_o need_v no_o other_o definition_n but_o that_o of_o the_o term_n only_o whereby_o we_o signify_v they_o that_o so_o there_o may_v be_v no_o mistake_n of_o our_o meaning_n that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v suppose_v to_o mean_v a_o square_a when_o we_o talk_v of_o a_o circle_n but_o when_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v not_o know_v or_o agree_v upon_o as_o in_o the_o present_a case_n than_o a_o bare_a definition_n of_o the_o term_n be_v not_o sufficient_a but_o the_o thing_n itself_o must_v be_v at_o least_o in_o general_n explain_v before_o any_o proposition_n can_v be_v with_o any_o certainty_n advance_v concern_v it_o for_o suppose_v instead_o of_o say_v that_o our_o idea_n come_v from_o our_o sense_n i_o shall_v say_v that_o the_o immediate_a object_n of_o our_o conception_n which_o be_v the_o nominal_a definition_n come_v from_o our_o sense_n what_o advantage_n will_v this_o be_v to_o the_o certainty_n of_o the_o proposition_n or_o how_o can_v it_o be_v decide_v whether_o the_o immediate_a object_n of_o our_o conception_n be_v from_o our_o sense_n or_o no_o unless_o it_o be_v first_o make_v know_v what_o this_o immediate_a object_n of_o our_o conception_n be_v we_o must_v know_v its_o nature_n before_o we_o can_v derive_v its_o pedigree_n paragr_n 3._o mr._n lock_n have_v maintain_v that_o there_o be_v no_o innate_a idea_n since_o there_o be_v no_o principle_n wherein_o all_o mankind_n agree_v but_o to_o that_o the_o author_n oppose_v the_o evident_a proposition_n which_o all_o the_o world_n agree_v to_o etc._n etc._n to_o that_o to_o what_o here_o be_v either_o a_o great_a blunder_n or_o a_o very_a gross_a prevarication_n what_o mr._n lock_n be_v here_o say_v to_o maintain_v consist_v of_o two_o distinct_a part_n a_o proposition_n and_o a_o reason_n of_o the_o proposition_n the_o proposition_n be_v that_o there_o be_v no_o innate_a idea_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o there_o be_v no_o principle_n universal_o assent_v to_o now_o to_o which_o of_o these_o be_v it_o that_o the_o reflecter_n oppose_v self-evident_a proposition_n not_o to_o the_o proposition_n certain_o but_o to_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o he_o allege_v self-evident_a proposition_n not_o to_o prove_v against_o the_o thesis_n lay_v down_o that_o idea_n be_v innate_a for_o that_o he_o express_o deny_v pag._n 20._o but_o to_o prove_v against_o the_o reason_n give_v that_o there_o be_v principle_n universal_o assent_v to_o as_o may_v appear_v from_o the_o very_a
