what_o be_v curable_a if_o we_o take_v it_o in_o time_n by_o religion_n no_o wound_n of_o soul_n but_o what_o there_o be_v balm_n for_o in_o gilead_n in_o christianity_n there_o be_v no_o disease_n too_o great_a for_o our_o heavenly_a physician_n but_o what_o the_o gospel_n have_v a_o proper_a and_o certain_a remedy_n for_o if_o we_o due_o and_o timely_o apply_v it_o a_o man_n may_v tarry_v too_o long_o indeed_o and_o not_o use_v the_o physic_n till_o it_o be_v too_o late_a till_o death_n come_v and_o put_v a_o end_n to_o the_o time_n of_o trial_n and_o the_o time_n of_o repentance_n and_o then_o a_o wound_a spirit_n i._n e._n the_o extreme_a sorrow_n for_o a_o man_n sin_n the_o deep_a contrition_n of_o soul_n for_o they_o can_v come_v up_o to_o true_a gospel_n repentance_n to_o which_o there_o be_v a_o certain_a promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n for_o that_o be_v only_o upon_o turn_v to_o god_n and_o leave_v all_o our_o sin_n and_o lead_v a_o new_a life_n and_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o repentance_n by_o obedience_n to_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o future_a which_o be_v a_o necessary_a condition_n by_o the_o term_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o he_o can_v perform_v who_o god_n cut_v off_o before_o he_o can_v do_v it_o and_o therefore_o such_o a_o one_o must_v be_v leave_v to_o the_o infinite_a mercy_n and_o righteous_a judgement_n of_o god_n to_o be_v deal_v with_o by_o such_o measure_n as_o be_v not_o within_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n or_o the_o term_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o by_o those_o i_o can_v see_v any_o title_n he_o have_v to_o pardon_n but_o in_o other_o case_n a_o wound_a spirit_n may_v be_v the_o great_a mercy_n and_o even_o the_o very_a beginning_n of_o health_n or_o of_o a_o cure_n to_o a_o soul_n when_o god_n do_v not_o suffer_v a_o man_n to_o go_v on_o sensles_o in_o his_o sin_n till_o he_o come_v to_o a_o seered_a conscience_n and_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n and_o to_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o blindness_n of_o mind_n but_o by_o some_o method_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o providence_n alarm_n his_o conscience_n and_o awaken_v his_o stupid_a mind_n and_o bring_v he_o almost_o senseless_a and_o stupefy_v soul_n to_o some_o spiritual_a sense_n of_o his_o condition_n then_o his_o soul_n will_v be_v wound_v as_o david_n be_v when_o he_o reflect_v upon_o those_o sin_n which_o he_o commit_v without_o consideration_n and_o he_o will_v be_v sore_o strike_v and_o smite_v as_o every_o penitent_n must_v at_o the_o remembrance_n of_o his_o evil_a way_n all_o repentance_n be_v such_o a_o wound_a of_o the_o soul_n as_o make_v its_o heart_n bleed_v within_o it_o and_o its_o blood_n and_o spirit_n melt_v into_o tear_n and_o sorrow_n for_o what_o it_o have_v do_v it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o easy_a thing_n as_o most_o man_n think_v it_o to_o be_v it_o be_v such_o a_o pain_n such_o a_o wound_n to_o the_o soul_n that_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o great_a sin_n be_v but_o a_o poor_a trifle_n to_o it_o and_o no_o man_n that_o right_o understand_v it_o will_v venture_v upon_o any_o sin_n from_o the_o reserve_a hope_n of_o it_o repentance_n be_v a_o bitter_a remedy_n make_v up_o of_o very_a strong_a and_o unpleasant_a ingredient_n and_o we_o must_v go_v through_o a_o long_a course_n to_o purge_v out_o the_o old_a disease_n and_o take_v away_o the_o root_n of_o it_o so_o that_o before_o a_o wicked_a mind_n can_v be_v cure_v by_o it_o it_o must_v be_v cut_v and_o latch_v and_o wound_v and_o have_v very_o severe_a application_n make_v to_o it_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n or_o the_o new_a birth_n can_v be_v wrought_v without_o many_o pang_n or_o throw_n nor_o do_v god_n ever_o almost_o bring_v a_o bad_a man_n to_o become_v a_o good_a one_o without_o some_o trouble_n and_o disorder_n of_o mind_n there_o be_v a_o trouble_n of_o mind_n indeed_o which_o be_v excessive_a and_o unreasonable_a for_o every_o sinner_n ought_v in_o some_o measure_n to_o be_v trouble_v in_o mind_n and_o he_o have_v not_o a_o due_a sense_n of_o his_o sin_n if_o he_o be_v not_o but_o there_o be_v a_o trouble_n of_o mind_n which_o take_v away_o the_o hope_n of_o mercy_n and_o throw_v man_n into_o despair_n which_o be_v common_o call_v a_o wound_a spirit_n and_o it_o be_v so_o in_o the_o high_a degree_n and_o whether_o there_o be_v any_o remedy_n for_o that_o and_o what_o it_o be_v and_o what_o advice_n be_v to_o be_v give_v in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o what_o judgement_n to_o be_v make_v of_o it_o i_o shall_v brief_o consider_v 1._o then_o this_o be_v often_o join_v with_o melancholy_a of_o body_n which_o be_v very_o hard_a to_o be_v cure_v and_o till_o it_o be_v so_o it_o be_v apt_a to_o darken_v the_o mind_n and_o bring_v a_o cloud_n over_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o fill_v the_o soul_n with_o very_o black_a idea_n and_o imagination_n and_o to_o hinder_v it_o from_o make_v true_a judgement_n of_o itself_o or_o its_o own_o action_n and_o this_o be_v as_o pityable_a and_o aught_o as_o much_o to_o be_v remedy_v by_o physic_n and_o care_n as_o other_o disease_n of_o body_n for_o i_o have_v know_v
very_o good_a person_n subject_a to_o it_o and_o one_o of_o the_o best_a mean_n to_o cure_v it_o be_v to_o know_v that_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n of_o that_o trouble_n of_o mind_n which_o will_v be_v so_o much_o abate_v when_o one_o be_v persuade_v from_o whence_o it_o often_o come_v or_o be_v heighten_v for_o melancholy_a be_v not_o curable_a by_o religion_n or_o divinity_n and_o they_o who_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o shall_v take_v the_o more_o care_n of_o their_o life_n that_o there_o be_v no_o true_a and_o great_a cause_n to_o fall_v in_o and_o join_v with_o the_o melancholy_a of_o their_o body_n and_o they_o shall_v make_v a_o judgement_n of_o themselves_o in_o their_o best_a temper_n and_o when_o their_o thought_n be_v clear_a and_o shall_v trust_v other_o and_o especial_o their_o spiritual_a guide_n to_o judge_v for_o they_o since_o they_o be_v so_o unfit_a general_o to_o pass_v judgement_n upon_o themselves_o 2._o this_o trouble_v of_o mind_n which_o make_v man_n despair_v of_o mercy_n be_v most_o unreasonable_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o whole_a tenor_n and_o design_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o there_o be_v pardon_v hold_v out_o to_o the_o great_a sinner_n by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o the_o great_a sin_n or_o the_o great_a number_n of_o sin_n if_o we_o repent_v of_o they_o and_o leave_v they_o and_o become_v good_a man_n before_o we_o die_v this_o be_v as_o certain_a as_o the_o gospel_n be_v true_a and_o therefore_o no_o man_n have_v any_o just_a cause_n to_o despair_v for_o the_o great_a sin_n or_o sin_n who_o be_v so_o hearty_o trouble_v for_o they_o that_o he_o will_v not_o for_o the_o world_n commit_v they_o again_o and_o who_o resolve_v never_o to_o do_v so_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n but_o to_o practise_v the_o contrary_a virtue_n and_o who_o make_v good_a this_o resolution_n by_o a_o virtuous_a and_o pious_a and_o religious_a life_n this_o man_n will_v as_o certain_o be_v happy_a as_o if_o he_o have_v be_v always_o innocent_a and_o never_o have_v offend_v god_n i_o can_v say_v he_o will_v be_v in_o a_o state_n as_o comfortable_a and_o free_a from_o trouble_n though_o if_o he_o have_v thus_o repent_v and_o become_v a_o good_a man_n he_o have_v good_a reason_n to_o be_v so_o but_o he_o will_v be_v as_o safe_a and_o if_o he_o have_v still_o some_o trouble_n of_o mind_n remain_v upon_o the_o remembrance_n of_o his_o sin_n though_o never_o so_o long_o pass_v and_o he_o can_v see_v the_o pardon_n of_o they_o with_o the_o same_o certainty_n and_o evidence_n that_o he_o know_v he_o commit_v they_o yet_o this_o shall_v not_o hinder_v his_o pardon_n nor_o affect_v his_o salvation_n if_o he_o have_v true_o and_o full_o repent_v of_o they_o for_o 3._o and_o last_o this_o trouble_v of_o mind_n which_o proceed_v from_o judge_v too_o hardly_o or_o severe_o of_o himself_o be_v rather_o a_o infirmity_n than_o a_o sin_n and_o god_n will_v not_o condemn_v a_o man_n for_o it_o though_o he_o may_v condemn_v himself_o for_o god_n will_v not_o condemn_v a_o man_n unjust_o though_o he_o shall_v unjust_o condemn_v himself_o much_o less_o because_o he_o do_v so_o despair_n be_v indeed_o a_o sad_a state_n but_o i_o can_v say_v it_o be_v always_o a_o damnable_a sin_n or_o want_v of_o faith_n as_o some_o think_v for_o it_o may_v arise_v not_o from_o a_o disbelief_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o of_o the_o divine_a goodness_n or_o the_o freeness_n and_o fullness_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o and_o through_o christ_n but_o mere_o from_o a_o false_a and_o mistake_v and_o too_o hard_a and_o humble_a a_o opinion_n of_o a_o man_n self_n and_o this_o be_v a_o fault_n not_o of_o a_o man_n will_n but_o of_o his_o judgement_n and_o a_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n in_o his_o understanding_n for_o which_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v condemn_v by_o a_o righteous_a god_n but_o he_o will_v reverse_v this_o false_a judgement_n which_o he_o make_v of_o himself_o when_o he_o live_v or_o when_o he_o die_v and_o set_v it_o right_n in_o the_o court_n of_o heaven_n and_o do_v justice_n to_o he_o at_o the_o great_a tribunal_n though_o he_o do_v not_o do_v it_o to_o himself_o here_o that_o god_n will_v judge_v man_n according_a to_o their_o work_n be_v plain_a in_o scripture_n but_o no_o where_o that_o i_o know_v that_o he_o will_v do_v so_o according_a to_o their_o thought_n their_o vain_a hope_n and_o presumptuous_a or_o vain_a fear_n and_o trouble_n and_o doubt_n and_o even_a despair_n of_o themselves_o so_o that_o though_o this_o trouble_v of_o mind_n or_o this_o wound_a spirit_n be_v a_o comfortless_a and_o unhappy_a state_n yet_o it_o true_o depend_v upon_o the_o cause_n to_o make_v judgement_n of_o it_o or_o to_o conclude_v any_o thing_n from_o it_o and_o true_a and_o timely_a repentance_n be_v the_o best_a and_o certain_a remedy_n for_o it_o chap._n iu._n the_o ill_a consequence_n draw_v from_o the_o privilege_n of_o repentance_n obviate_v and_o prevent_v the_o most_o wicked_a and_o great_a of_o sinner_n who_o have_v any_o thought_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o of_o another_o world_n though_o they_o be_v not_o prevail_v upon_o by_o this_o to_o become_v better_a yet_o make_v this_o reserve_n and_o refuge_n to_o themselves_o that_o they_o will_v repent_v hereafter_o at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o and_o so_o escape_v the_o wrath_n to_o come_v they_o know_v and_o be_v very_o sensible_a if_o they_o have_v not_o shake_v off_o all_o religion_n and_o all_o think_v and_o consider_v of_o these_o thing_n that_o except_o they_o repent_v they_o shall_v all_o perish_v but_o they_o hope_v and_o intend_v to_o prevent_v this_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o repentance_n and_o so_o make_v use_n of_o that_o not_o to_o bring_v they_o off_o from_o their_o sin_n but_o to_o encourage_v they_o in_o they_o with_o hope_n to_o avoid_v all_o the_o miserable_a consequence_n of_o they_o and_o yet_o live_v in_o they_o and_o so_o by_o this_o privilege_n of_o a_o after_o repentance_n they_o set_v aside_o the_o present_a necessity_n of_o a_o good_a life_n and_o whole_o destroy_v or_o supersede_n all_o religion_n i_o shall_v therefore_o endeavour_v to_o prevent_v that_o most_o common_a and_o most_o fatal_a abuse_n of_o it_o for_o i_o be_o confident_a there_o be_v more_o soul_n perish_v by_o that_o than_o by_o any_o other_o mistake_v whatsoever_o and_o a_o thousand_o time_n more_o than_o by_o downright_a infidelity_n and_o disbelief_n of_o all_o religion_n which_o be_v a_o very_a rare_a thing_n and_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o find_v out_o any_o certain_a instance_n that_o have_v ever_o be_v of_o it_o in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v so_o much_o against_o the_o natural_a sense_n and_o reason_n and_o apprehension_n of_o mankind_n but_o the_o other_o be_v the_o common_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n even_o for_o christian_n perhaps_o above_o any_o other_o to_o make_v false_a reason_n to_o themselves_o from_o this_o privilege_n of_o repentance_n which_o we_o have_v in_o the_o high_a degree_n from_o the_o gospel_n to_o think_v they_o may_v secure_v and_o save_v their_o soul_n and_o yet_o indulge_v and_o allow_v themselves_o in_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o their_o sin_n because_o they_o may_v set_v all_o right_n by_o repent_v of_o they_o hereafter_o i_o shall_v therefore_o against_o this_o error_n and_o abuse_n of_o repentance_n and_o to_o obviate_v this_o mischievous_a consequence_n offer_v these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o can_v we_o think_v a_o wise_a god_n will_v make_v such_o a_o grant_n and_o concession_n to_o his_o creature_n as_o shall_v destroy_v all_o religion_n and_o make_v void_a the_o necessity_n of_o obedience_n and_o a_o good_a life_n which_o according_a to_o these_o man_n thought_n be_v unavoidable_o do_v by_o this_o gospel-priviledge_n of_o repentance_n for_o since_o say_v they_o a_o man_n be_v as_o certain_o safe_a who_o come_v in_o at_o any_o time_n upon_o repentance_n and_o shall_v be_v as_o certain_o save_v by_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o if_o he_o have_v spend_v all_o his_o life_n in_o the_o strict_a virtue_n and_o religion_n what_o need_n be_v there_o of_o such_o a_o early_a and_o constant_a and_o perpetual_a obedience_n and_o spend_v a_o whole_a life_n in_o the_o servitude_n and_o drudgery_n of_o religion_n when_o come_v in_o at_o the_o eleven_o hour_n and_o work_v but_o a_o short_a space_n at_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o day_n will_v have_v as_o much_o wage_n and_o as_o sure_a a_o reward_n and_o be_v as_o certain_o accept_v by_o god_n shall_v not_o
