life_n be_v perfect_a than_o the_o vegetative_a and_o the_o rational_a life_n than_o the_o sensitive_a and_o the_o life_n of_o a_o spirit_n than_o the_o life_n of_o a_o body_n now_o this_o first_o cause_n be_v a_o infinite_a and_o pure_a act_n he_o have_v a_o infinite_a perfect_a life_n 4._o from_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o he_o be_v a_o intellectual_a be_v and_o as_o all_o his_o work_n belong_v to_o this_o first_o cause_n every_o intellectual_a agent_n work_v for_o some_o end_n or_o other_o the_o first_o cause_n we_o have_v show_v to_o be_v a_o intellectual_a agent_n therefore_o what_o he_o work_v he_o work_v for_o some_o end_v answerable_a to_o the_o work_n and_o worker_n and_o it_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v that_o he_o that_o be_v the_o first_o cause_n or_o efficient_a of_o all_o thing_n must_v needs_o be_v the_o appointer_n of_o his_o own_o end_n in_o that_o work._n the_o end_n though_o it_o be_v last_o in_o execution_n be_v first_o in_o intention_n for_o it_o move_v the_o agent_n to_o the_o work_n or_o otherwise_o though_o he_o work_v not_o without_o a_o event_n he_o do_v it_o without_o a_o end._n now_o that_o which_o be_v first_o in_o efficiency_n must_v needs_o be_v the_o first_o designer_n of_o his_o own_o end_n which_o be_v but_o the_o result_n of_o his_o work_n a_o second_o cause_n though_o he_o may_v have_v a_o end_n in_o his_o causation_n proportionable_a to_o the_o causality_n wherewith_o he_o be_v endue_v yet_o as_o his_o efficiency_n be_v subordinate_a to_o and_o derive_v from_o the_o efficiency_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n so_o must_v his_o end_n be_v it_o may_v be_v a_o ultimate_a end_n in_o respect_n of_o it_o it_o be_v but_o interlocutory_a or_o rather_o no_o end_n at_o all_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n but_o only_o a_o mean_n conduce_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o the_o end_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n when_o a_o passionate_a ambitious_a or_o covetous_a man_n drive_v main_o and_o whole_o at_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o those_o lust_n as_o his_o end_n and_o that_o end_n draw_v out_o his_o activity_n and_o strength_n to_o
likewise_o in_o experience_n take_v but_o the_o instance_n of_o one_o creature_n mankind_n man_n it_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o world_n do_v every_o day_n grow_v full_a and_o full_a that_o which_o be_v now_o almost_o a_o nation_n we_o can_v with_o a_o little_a help_n derive_v into_o one_o man_n five_o hundred_o year_n since_o so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o imaginable_a but_o that_o at_o length_n we_o must_v necessary_o come_v to_o a_o first_o man_n if_o so_o how_o have_v that_o man_n his_o be_v it_o be_v true_a that_o there_o be_v some_o live_a creature_n that_o we_o may_v trace_v their_o beginning_n to_o the_o corruption_n of_o some_o preexi_a matter_n which_o by_o its_o own_o temper_n and_o the_o concurrence_n of_o other_o second_o cause_n may_v produce_v a_o live_a creature_n as_o worm_n mouse_n etc._n etc._n but_o if_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o a_o production_n of_o man_n at_o first_o why_o be_v it_o not_o so_o at_o some_o time_n since_o viz._n that_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v produce_v out_o of_o the_o ground_n by_o some_o concurrence_n of_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o matter_n with_o second_o cause_n if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o that_o be_v now_o needless_a and_o nature_n do_v nothing_o in_o vain_a the_o answer_n be_v unsatisfactory_a for_o 1._o where_o such_o production_n be_v as_o of_o mouse_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v as_o needless_a because_o they_o propagate_v their_o kind_n as_o well_o as_o man._n and_o 2._o if_o nature_n do_v nothing_o in_o vain_a it_o be_v plain_a that_o whatever_o be_v so_o call_v nature_n be_v in_o truth_n the_o first_o cause_n though_o miscall_v nature_n for_o not_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n in_o vain_a be_v a_o act_n of_o a_o voluntary_a and_o rational_a agent_n a_o mere_a natural_a agent_n can_v but_o work_v uniform_o whether_o in_o vain_a or_o not_o in_o vain_a when_o the_o matter_n be_v uniform_o dispose_v therefore_o we_o must_v needs_o have_v recourse_n to_o a_o first_o voluntary_a and_o intellectual_a agent_n that_o do_v at_o first_o make_v man_n and_o by_o his_o free_a power_n do_v advance_v the_o piece_n of_o red_a earth_n above_o its_o own_o disposition_n and_o beyond_o the_o causality_n of_o second_o cause_n to_o produce_v man_n and_o that_o have_v not_o since_o do_v the_o like_a but_o as_o to_o those_o other_o imperfect_a creature_n have_v plant_v in_o second_o cause_n such_o a_o strength_n and_o causality_n as_o out_o of_o a_o prepare_a matter_n to_o produce_v other_o live_a creature_n without_o any_o concurrence_n of_o his_o immediate_a or_o extraordinary_a power_n 2._o in_o every_o successive_a motion_n it_o be_v necessary_a to_o arrive_v to_o some_o begin_n of_o it_o and_o it_o be_v impossible_a it_o shall_v be_v eternal_a as_o in_o case_n of_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o sun_n which_o be_v successive_a it_o can_v in_o reason_n be_v but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o time_n or_o instant_n wherein_o it_o either_o be_v not_o or_o do_v not_o move_v for_o otherwise_o the_o revolution_n will_v be_v actual_o infinite_a in_o number_n and_o yet_o that_o infinite_a number_n of_o revolution_n be_v still_o augment_v by_o daily_o new_a revolution_n which_o will_v be_v in_o itself_o a_o contradiction_n that_o that_o which_o be_v before_o actual_o infinite_a shall_v yet_o receive_v a_o increase_n as_o necessary_o it_o must_v if_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o sun_n have_v never_o a_o beginning_n therefore_o of_o necessity_n it_o have_v a_o beginning_n if_o it_o have_v a_o beginning_n of_o its_o motion_n it_o can_v not_o have_v it_o from_o itself_o for_o why_o do_v it_o not_o then_o move_v soon_o but_o of_o necessity_n it_o must_v have_v the_o beginning_n from_o another_o for_o though_o animate_v creature_n move_v themselves_o yet_o they_o receive_v still_o the_o original_a cause_n of_o their_o motion_n from_o something_o without_o they_o as_o well_o as_o of_o their_o be_v who_o or_o what_o be_v it_o that_o give_v it_o that_o motion_n or_o principle_n of_o its_o motion_n and_o if_o any_o can_v assign_v any_o other_o than_o the_o first_o cause_n which_o be_v not_o almost_o imaginable_a yet_o still_o my_o enquiry_n must_v rise_v high_a what_o be_v that_o that_o give_v be_v or_o causality_n to_o that_o cause_n so_o that_o in_o sum_n the_o motion_n of_o the_o sun_n or_o heaven_n can_v be_v eternal_a because_o successive_a it_o must_v have_v a_o cause_n of_o its_o motion_n from_o without_o itself_o that_o cause_n if_o the_o first_o cause_n than_o a_o first_o cause_n must_v be_v grant_v if_o not_o the_o first_o yet_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o in_o all_o successive_a motion_n we_o must_v admit_v a_o beginning_n we_o may_v conclude_v in_o all_o succession_n of_o cause_n there_o must_v be_v a_o beginning_n because_o the_o be_v and_o causation_n or_o motion_n of_o second_o cause_n be_v likewise_o successive_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v no_o more_o infinite_a than_o the_o successive_a motion_n of_o the_o same_o subject_n can_v be_v infinite_a it_o be_v impossible_a that_o any_o thing_n shall_v be_v eternal_a that_o be_v not_o indivisible_a ut_fw-la videbitur_fw-la infra_fw-la so_o that_o the_o succession_n of_o the_o create_a world_n the_o subservience_n of_o one_o thing_n to_o the_o preservation_n of_o another_o the_o inclination_n of_o creature_n without_o choice_n to_o mean_n conducible_a to_o their_o preservation_n the_o order_n and_o fit_v of_o thing_n whereby_o confusion_n and_o uselessness_n of_o creature_n be_v avoid_v all_o which_o do_v bespeak_v the_o admission_n of_o a_o voluntary_a intellectual_a supreme_a and_o universal_a cause_n of_o all_o thing_n now_o a_o first_o cause_n be_v admit_v we_o be_v to_o consider_v what_o may_v rational_o be_v deduce_v from_o thence_o concern_v this_o first_o cause_n work._n and_o those_o be_v of_o two_o kind_n first_o such_o as_o absolute_o concern_v his_o own_o be_v second_o such_o as_o concern_v he_o in_o relation_n to_o those_o effect_n which_o proceed_v from_o he_o for_o the_o former_a of_o these_o we_o say_v that_o a_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n be_v grant_v i._o it_o necessary_o follow_v that_o he_o have_v no_o bound_n of_o his_o existence_n or_o be_v the_o bound_n of_o existence_n be_v either_o in_o duration_n or_o extension_n the_o exclusion_n of_o the_o bound_n of_o existence_n in_o duration_n be_v eternity_n that_o in_o extension_n be_v immensity_n now_o first_o for_o eternity_n whatsoever_o be_v eternal_a must_v be_v without_o beginning_n without_o succession_n without_o end._n 1._o without_o beginning_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o first_o cause_n it_o can_v have_v a_o beginning_n for_o than_o he_o must_v have_v a_o cause_n of_o his_o be_v which_o will_v be_v a_o contradiction_n neither_o can_v he_o have_v a_o beginning_n from_o himself_o for_o that_o be_v to_o suppose_v a_o pre-existence_n in_o himself_o to_o himself_o which_o be_v also_o repugnant_a 2._o without_o succession_n there_o be_v nothing_o past_a nothing_o to_o come_v for_o all_o be_v one_o indivisible_a succession_n and_o those_o notion_n of_o time_n past_a present_a and_o to_o come_v be_v only_o the_o consequence_n of_o a_o successive_a motion_n for_o time_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o conception_n whereby_o we_o measure_v successive_a motion_n be_v there_o no_o successive_a motion_n in_o the_o world_n it_o will_v be_v impossible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v any_o of_o those_o affection_n of_o time_n and_o consequent_o time_n be_v not_o any_o thing_n real_a but_o a_o relation_n to_o motion_n now_o before_o that_o the_o first_o cause_n do_v set_v a_o continue_a motion_n in_o the_o world_n there_o can_v be_v no_o succession_n but_o all_o be_v wrap_v up_o in_o one_o permanent_a instant_n for_o the_o be_v of_o the_o first_o cause_n and_o his_o motion_n what_o ever_o it_o be_v or_o be_v be_v indivisible_a as_o shall_v be_v show_v then_o when_o he_o produce_v second_o cause_n and_o consequent_o those_o move_v in_o their_o several_a causality_n and_o course_n and_o consequent_o their_o motion_n being_n and_o causality_n be_v successive_a there_o be_v a_o prius_fw-la and_o posterius_fw-la and_o succession_n yet_o this_o do_v not_o alter_v the_o indivisible_a nature_n of_o that_o duration_n which_o that_o indivisible_a be_v have_v before_o and_o at_o and_o with_o that_o motion_n which_o he_o after_o produce_v the_o first_o be_v have_v a_o coexistence_n with_o the_o successive_a motion_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o his_o duration_n be_v not_o measure_v by_o it_o or_o co-extended_n with_o it_o but_o be_v of_o the_o same_o indivisibility_n as_o if_o there_o have_v be_v no_o successive_a motion_n produce_v and_o consequent_o no_o successive_a time_n 3._o without_o end_n for_o first_o what_o shall_v or_o can_v
whereby_o we_o be_v bind_v and_o whereunto_o all_o humane_a justice_n be_v to_o be_v resolve_v both_o in_o point_n of_o conformity_n as_o to_o its_o pattern_n and_o obligation_n as_o to_o its_o law._n but_o how_o these_o law_n be_v at_o first_o give_v to_o man_n whether_o by_o a_o formal_a command_n or_o whether_o by_o a_o immediate_a impression_n in_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n or_o whether_o by_o a_o implant_v propension_n or_o inclination_n in_o the_o will_n or_o partly_o by_o one_o partly_o by_o another_o it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o determine_v sed_fw-la vide_fw-la infra_fw-la needs_o follow_v that_o he_o be_v immutable_a for_o mutability_n be_v inconsistent_a 1._o with_o his_o perfection_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o a_o pure_a act_n can_v have_v any_o change_n for_o all_o change_n do_v necessary_o infer_v passibility_n and_o receptibility_n of_o what_o it_o have_v not_o before_o and_o to_o suppose_v that_o be_v to_o conclude_v he_o be_v not_o actus_fw-la in_o essence_n continue_v the_o same_o as_o from_o ignorance_n to_o knowledge_n from_o one_o colour_n to_o another_o but_o such_o accidental_a change_n can_v be_v in_o that_o which_o be_v ens_fw-la simplicissimum_fw-la because_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o in_o he_o which_o be_v not_o his_o essence_n 4._o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o infinitude_n for_o to_o whatsoever_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v add_v that_o it_o have_v not_o before_o that_o can_v be_v infinite_a because_o still_o capable_a of_o a_o far_a accession_n and_o as_o this_o immutability_n be_v affirm_v of_o the_o first_o cause_n in_o point_n of_o his_o essence_n and_o nature_n so_o in_o some_o respect_n it_o be_v concern_v his_o acts._n these_o be_v of_o two_o kind_n viz._n the_o immanent_a act_n such_o be_v the_o act_n of_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o these_o be_v immutable_a as_o well_o as_o his_o essence_n for_o indeed_o they_o be_v but_o notional_o divide_v from_o it_o in_o we_o our_o will_n be_v one_o thing_n and_o our_o will_v another_o but_o that_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o simplicity_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o as_o his_o essence_n so_o his_o will_n be_v immutable_a he_o will_v nothing_o now_o but_o what_o he_o ever_o will_v and_o understand_v from_o eternity_n what_o he_o now_o know_v for_o eternity_n have_v neither_o now_o nor_o then_o in_o it_o 2._o the_o emanant_fw-la act_n those_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o immutable_a will_n these_o be_v subject_a to_o mutation_n but_o without_o the_o least_o mutation_n either_o in_o the_o essence_n or_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n 1._o not_o in_o his_o essence_n it_o be_v true_a here_o be_v a_o new_a relation_n that_o be_v not_o before_o for_o when_o the_o produce_v the_o relation_n be_v multiply_v but_o relation_n breed_v no_o change_n at_o all_o in_o the_o subject_n concern_v who_o they_o be_v affirm_v the_o be_v be_v the_o same_o before_o it_o put_v forth_o itself_o in_o a_o causation_n as_o it_o be_v before_o it_o do_v of_o necessity_n import_v a_o change_n in_o the_o thing_n effect_v viz._n a_o motion_n à _fw-la non_fw-la esse_fw-la simpliciter_fw-la or_o à _fw-la non_fw-la esse_fw-la tale_n but_o not_o in_o the_o cause_n which_o have_v a_o absolute_a be_v before_o though_o not_o actual_o as_o a_o cause_n before_o 2._o not_o in_o his_o will._n it_o be_v true_a when_o any_o effect_n be_v produce_v that_o be_v not_o before_o here_o be_v a_o execution_n of_o what_o be_v not_o before_o but_o the_o will_n of_o that_o to_o be_v then_o be_v from_o all_o eternity_n again_o when_o a_o be_v be_v either_o change_v or_o annihilate_v that_o be_v not_o by_o a_o change_n of_o the_o will_n in_o the_o first_o cause_n but_o only_o in_o the_o term_n or_o execution_n of_o that_o will_n for_o by_o the_o same_o indivisible_a and_o eternal_a act_n of_o his_o will_n he_o will_v this_o or_o that_o to_o be_v make_v and_o after_o to_o be_v annihilate_v in_o time_n the_o change_n be_v in_o the_o terminus_fw-la or_o execution_n of_o his_o will_n not_o in_o the_o will_n or_o the_o immanent_a act_n of_o it_o but_o how_o can_v we_o then_o conceive_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v one_o immutable_a act_n of_o his_o will_n when_o a_o thing_n be_v past_a how_o can_v he_o be_v say_v to_o will_n that_o which_o be_v already_o execute_v and_o pass_v it_o for_o which_o we_o must_v return_v to_o what_o have_v be_v say_v viz._n that_o past_a and_o to_o come_v be_v but_o the_o measure_n of_o successive_a motion_n and_o therefore_o though_o they_o be_v applicable_a to_o they_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o applicable_a to_o a_o indivisible_a be_v or_o act_n the_o measure_n of_o successive_a motion_n do_v not_o fit_a eternity_n which_o though_o it_o be_v a_o duration_n that_o consist_v with_o the_o successive_a motion_n and_o duration_n of_o the_o creature_n yet_o it_o hold_v no_o proportion_n with_o it_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o heaven_n though_o 10000_o time_n swift_a than_o the_o motion_n of_o a_o tortoise_n have_v yet_o a_o proportion_n one_o to_o another_o because_o both_o successive_a and_o so_o time_n measure_v both_o but_o the_o duration_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v the_o duration_n of_o a_o indivisible_a be_v and_o consequent_o hold_v not_o proportion_n with_o succession_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o it_o be_v but_o our_o gross_a conception_n that_o do_v imagine_v any_o part_n of_o eternity_n past_a or_o any_o part_n to_o come_v or_o that_o time_n do_v divide_v the_o fore_a part_n of_o eternity_n from_o the_o future_a part_n of_o eternity_n it_o be_v a_o indivisible_a permanent_a duration_n nothing_o past_a nothing_o future_a but_o the_o same_o fix_a instant_n consequent_o the_o act_n of_o the_o divine_a will_n always_o one_o always_o present_a this_o knowledge_n be_v too_o wonderful_a for_o i_o chap._n ii_o of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n thus_o far_o have_v we_o proceed_v in_o those_o inquiry_n which_o rectify_v reason_n suggest_v to_o we_o concern_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n now_o we_o consider_v the_o emanant_fw-la act_n of_o his_o thing_n be_v direct_v and_o govern_v unto_o their_o several_a end_n by_o he_o touch_v the_o former_a viz._n that_o all_o thing_n beside_o he_o have_v their_o original_n be_v from_o he_o that_o be_v be_v ordain_v and_o will_v move_v if_o it_o know_v it_o and_o how_o to_o attain_v it_o again_o though_o the_o understanding_n do_v sometime_o find_v that_o these_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n will_v make_v i_o happy_a but_o i_o spy_v the_o true_a and_o everlasting_a happiness_n yet_o the_o conviction_n be_v not_o so_o strong_a and_o evident_a that_o it_o dare_v conclude_v the_o pursuit_n thereof_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o those_o delight_n which_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o and_o from_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o competition_n of_o these_o present_a enjoyment_n will_v soon_o starve_v and_o famish_v these_o uncompleat_a conviction_n and_o all_o pursuit_n in_o the_o will_n of_o they_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n happen_v in_o the_o understanding_n 2._o in_o the_o will_n which_o have_v lose_v her_o liberty_n to_o follow_v her_o light_n and_o be_v captivate_v by_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n the_o understanding_n be_v right_o enlighten_v present_v to_o the_o will_v several_a end_n the_o subordinate_a end_n preservation_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la by_o meat_n and_o drink_n acquisition_n of_o wealth_n to_o provide_v these_o convenience_n obtain_v of_o power_n to_o secure_v that_o wealth_n the_o supreme_a end_n blessedness_n and_o that_o wherein_o it_o consist_v show_v the_o will_n that_o the_o value_n of_o these_o end_n must_v be_v the_o measure_n of_o her_o pursuit_n of_o they_o viz._n with_o subordination_n to_o the_o supreme_a end_n in_o order_n to_o it_o and_o bid_v she_o beware_v of_o turn_v the_o subordinate_a end_n to_o ultimate_a end_n but_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n either_o before_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o understanding_n have_v precipitate_v the_o will_n into_o a_o violent_a pursuit_n of_o those_o present_a and_o sensible_a good_n or_o so_o bewitch_v she_o after_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n thereof_o that_o it_o can_v no_o more_o listen_v to_o the_o entertainment_n of_o the_o pursuit_n of_o a_o future_a spiritual_a good_a than_o if_o it_o have_v no_o reason_n the_o beast_n in_o man_n have_v get_v the_o man_n upon_o his_o back_n and_o run_v away_o with_o he_o contrary_a to_o the_o cry_n and_o dictate_v even_o of_o reason_n that_o shall_v rule_v it_o and_o of_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n all_o mankind_n be_v sick_a both_o in_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o cure_v we_o must_v be_v before_o we_o can_v clear_o and_o uniform_o move_v to_o our_o supreme_a end_n which_o what_o it_o be_v as_o the_o next_o inquiry_n chap._n iu._n of_o the_o supreme_a end_n of_o man._n what_o be_v that_o good_a for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a inquiry_n of_o the_o wise_a of_o man_n so_o it_o be_v that_o problem_n that_o have_v torture_v the_o wit_n and_o weary_v the_o pursuit_n of_o most_o of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n that_o have_v be_v in_o the_o world._n the_o universality_n of_o the_o question_n grow_v from_o that_o restless_a motion_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n after_o some_o end_n which_o put_v every_o man_n at_o last_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o somewhat_o as_o his_o end_n though_o it_o may_v be_v not_o upon_o the_o speculative_a and_o critical_a inquiry_n concern_v it_o as_o the_o ordinary_a rational_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n teach_v a_o man_n to_o conclude_v rational_o though_o he_o have_v not_o that_o artificial_a reason_n of_o reason_n which_o be_v acquire_v by_o speculation_n and_o study_n and_o as_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o put_v many_o upon_o the_o inquiry_n and_o all_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o some_o end_n so_o the_o difficulty_n of_o the_o decision_n do_v produce_v that_o variety_n of_o judgement_n and_o practice_n concern_v this_o which_o be_v impossible_a all_o to_o be_v sound_a and_o true_a but_o possible_o they_o may_v be_v all_o false_a in_o as_o much_o as_o there_o can_v be_v but_o one_o supreme_a good_a and_o adequate_a end_n of_o man_n which_o be_v mistake_v concern_v this_o point_n because_o the_o truth_n be_v but_o one_o the_o rest_n be_v all_o error_n and_o though_o some_o carry_v more_o likelihood_n of_o reason_n than_o other_o yet_o it_o carry_v so_o much_o distance_n from_o truth_n that_o it_o be_v discernible_a not_o to_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o the_o mistake_n be_v not_o only_o evident_a to_o reason_n but_o even_o to_o sense_n itself_o that_o man_n that_o will_v go_v about_o to_o persuade_v i_o that_o happiness_n consist_v in_o corporal_a pleasure_n outward_a good_a of_o body_n or_o fortune_n wealth_n or_o honour_n knowledge_n of_o all_o create_a being_n practice_n of_o moral_a virtue_n etc._n etc._n i_o need_v no_o other_o conviction_n of_o the_o falsity_n of_o these_o but_o this_o that_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o any_o or_o all_o of_o these_o i_o still_o find_v those_o affection_n in_o my_o soul_n that_o can_v consist_v with_o happiness_n but_o mingle_v misery_n with_o this_o thin_a and_o empty_a happiness_n 1._o desire_v of_o somewhat_o more_o or_o somewhat_o else_o which_o i_o have_v not_o which_o arise_v not_o from_o the_o goodness_n of_o what_o i_o enjoy_v but_o from_o the_o emptiness_n and_o narrowness_n of_o it_o 2._o consequent_o grief_n for_o what_o i_o want_v and_o have_v not_o 3._o fear_v of_o loss_n of_o what_o i_o have_v and_o never_o any_o man_n in_o this_o world_n in_o all_o the_o enjoyment_n he_o ever_o have_v or_o be_v capable_a of_o except_o that_o which_o we_o now_o intend_v to_o speak_v of_o but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o have_v these_o three_o affection_n about_o he_o actual_o work_v which_o can_v never_o consist_v with_o happiness_n now_o the_o general_a ground_n of_o these_o mistake_n in_o the_o practice_n of_o man_n be_v 1._o the_o error_n of_o their_o judgement_n 2._o the_o impetus_fw-la or_o force_v of_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n which_o precipitate_v and_o captivate_v their_o judgement_n the_o speculative_a error_n arise_v from_o ignorance_n 1._o of_o the_o subject_a man_n for_o let_v it_o be_v but_o once_o grant_v that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v a_o intellectual_a immortal_a substance_n all_o those_o opinion_n which_o place_n happiness_n in_o this_o life_n will_v be_v convince_v clear_o false_a and_o vain_a but_o though_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o tell_v i_o what_o be_v not_o my_o
be_v a_o infinite_a and_o universal_a good._n the_o former_a qualification_n though_o each_o exclude_v something_o yet_o none_o exclude_v all_o creature_n from_o be_v the_o supreme_a end_n of_o the_o soul_n angel_n and_o spirit_n be_v immaterial_a immortal_a intellectual_a good_a yet_o they_o want_v this_o one_o qualification_n without_o which_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o there_o can_v be_v the_o object_n wherein_o consist_v true_a happiness_n the_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o nothing_o below_o a_o infinite_a good_a can_v satisfy_v the_o infinite_a motion_n of_o the_o soul._n the_o motion_n and_o comprehension_n of_o the_o understanding_n though_o actual_o it_o do_v not_o understand_v all_o thing_n finite_a it_o may_v comprehend_v all_o finite_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n which_o be_v clear_o evidence_v by_o experience_n the_o most_o know_a man_n in_o the_o world_n have_v as_o much_o room_n for_o more_o knowledge_n as_o he_o have_v before_o he_o know_v any_o thing_n if_o a_o man_n therefore_o know_v all_o the_o finite_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o be_v not_o the_o understanding_n so_o fill_v but_o be_v there_o more_o to_o be_v know_v he_o will_v have_v room_n for_o it_o and_o consequent_o a_o desire_n to_o it_o nothing_o then_o can_v fill_v and_o satiate_v the_o understanding_n but_o infiniteness_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o conclude_v that_o the_o understanding_n be_v commensurate_a to_o the_o infinite_a nature_n of_o the_o first_o be_v no_o that_o have_v a_o actual_a plenitude_n beyond_o the_o comprehension_n of_o the_o understanding_n but_o the_o meaning_n be_v god_n have_v place_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n a_o understanding_n potential_o infinite_a that_o can_v be_v fill_v with_o what_o be_v actual_o finite_a as_o all_o creature_n be_v and_o as_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o understanding_n be_v infinite_a and_o restless_a till_o it_o be_v fill_v with_o he_o that_o fill_v all_o in_o all_o so_o be_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o will_n nothing_o below_o a_o infinite_a good_a can_v satisfy_v it_o and_o now_o as_o we_o have_v argue_v upward_o from_o the_o capacity_n and_o vastness_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o faculty_n that_o nothing_o below_o a_o infinite_a good_a can_v be_v its_o end_n so_o we_o must_v argue_v downward_o too_o the_o great_a and_o wise_a creator_n who_o have_v the_o disposition_n of_o all_o thing_n to_o their_o end_n and_o who_o in_o his_o infinite_a wisdom_n have_v put_v motion_n and_o capacity_n in_o all_o thing_n conduce_v and_o fit_a for_o those_o end_n for_o which_o he_o have_v ordain_v they_o have_v appoint_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o end_n of_o his_o immortal_a creature_n and_o therefore_o have_v put_v in_o the_o soul_n a_o capacity_n too_o large_a for_o any_o thing_n below_o himself_o and_o motion_n restless_a in_o any_o thing_n but_o himself_o the_o conclusion_n therefore_o be_v the_o immortal_a invisible_a creator_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o communication_n of_o happiness_n answerable_a to_o every_o exigence_n and_o degree_n of_o its_o be_v sed_fw-la de_fw-la hoc_fw-la infra_fw-la now_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v the_o last_o end_n of_o man_n and_o the_o only_a object_n of_o his_o happiness_n it_o remain_v to_o be_v inquire_v what_o this_o happiness_n be_v or_o the_o formal_a reason_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o subject_a capable_a of_o happiness_n and_o a_o be_v that_o may_v be_v proportionable_a to_o that_o capacity_n yet_o the_o subject_n not_o true_o happy_a the_o beatitude_n therefore_o of_o the_o soul_n consist_v in_o the_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o this_o object_n of_o his_o happiness_n and_o this_o union_n presuppose_v a_o double_a act_n 1._o a_o act_n or_o propension_n in_o the_o soul_n move_v it_o unto_o god_n as_o to_o its_o end_n and_o perfection_n and_o as_o the_o great_a creator_n do_v appoint_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o end_n of_o this_o his_o rational_a creature_n so_o he_o implant_v in_o he_o a_o propension_n and_o motion_n in_o he_o to_o that_o end_n and_o that_o propension_n and_o motion_n be_v not_o a_o mere_a natural_a inclination_n but_o arise_v from_o the_o fitness_n of_o those_o high_a faculty_n of_o understanding_n and_o will_n for_o so_o excellent_a a_o object_n in_o these_o he_o have_v place_v a_o capacity_n or_o receptibility_n in_o some_o measure_n of_o himself_o and_o as_o every_o power_n be_v ordain_v in_o reference_n to_o something_o else_o that_o may_v actuate_v and_o perfect_v it_o and_o consequent_o move_v after_o that_o object_n whereunto_o it_o be_v ordain_v so_o this_o receptibility_n which_o god_n have_v place_v in_o the_o soul_n do_v or_o at_o least_o natural_o shall_v move_v to_o that_o object_n which_o alone_o can_v fill_v its_o vacuity_n and_o receptiveness_n 2._o in_o as_o much_o as_o god_n be_v a_o free_a agent_n though_o he_o give_v the_o soul_n these_o faculty_n yet_o so_o much_o be_v his_o be_v and_o perfection_n beyond_o the_o reach_n and_o attainment_n of_o any_o finite_a be_v that_o this_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n can_v never_o overtake_v his_o happiness_n unless_o there_o be_v likewise_o a_o act_n of_o condescension_n and_o communion_n of_o himself_o to_o the_o soul_n therefore_o there_o be_v necessary_o require_v to_o the_o happiness_n
