while_n do_v not_o love_n christ_n for_o christ_n nor_o holy_a duty_n as_o way_n to_o glorify_v god_n but_o where_o renew_v grace_n be_v in_o a_o man_n the_o principle_n which_o set_v he_o a_o work_n for_o christ_n be_v faith_n and_o which_o draw_v he_o out_o be_v a_o love_n of_o godliness_n and_o a_o love_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n three_o in_o the_o end_n or_o aim_n which_o distemper_n lie_v only_o in_o trouble_n so_o the_o remedy_n lie_v only_o in_o ease_n oh_o if_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v off_o in_o the_o feel_n of_o it_o but_o the_o poor_a wretch_n do_v not_o think_v of_o remove_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n in_o the_o state_n of_o it_o and_o o_o if_o the_o painful_a terror_n of_o conscience_n be_v off_o that_o and_o this_o he_o aim_v at_o direct_o if_o he_o think_v of_o christ_n if_o he_o pray_v if_o he_o hear_v if_o he_o confer_v if_o he_o reform_v all_o tend_v to_o this_o viz._n the_o remove_n of_o sensible_a evil_n of_o penal_a evil_n of_o terror_n and_o trouble_n and_o that_o his_o conscience_n may_v be_v quiet_a and_o hold_v its_o peace_n and_o speak_v bitter_o no_o more_o unto_o he_o but_o where_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o grace_n the_o so_o earnest_a so_o constant_a 2._o he_o will_v give_v way_n to_o contemplative_a evil_n and_o will_v be_v venture_v upon_o the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n again_o 3._o he_o will_v return_v in_o love_n to_o his_o sinful_a practice_n and_o with_o the_o dog_n will_v return_v again_o to_o his_o vomit_n 2_o pet._n 2._o 22._o 4._o his_o latter_a end_n be_v worse_o his_o conscience_n from_o be_v a_o trouble_a conscience_n will_v now_o become_v a_o harden_a conscience_n and_o sear_v 2_o pet._n 2._o 20._o but_o thus_o it_o never_o be_v with_o a_o heart_n renew_v by_o grace_n which_o turn_v we_o from_o evil_a to_o good_a and_o from_o good_a to_o better_a and_o still_o increase_v in_o the_o soul_n a_o great_a hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o fear_v to_o sin_n and_o the_o more_o that_o renew_v grace_n abound_v in_o the_o soul_n the_o more_o be_v tenderness_n abound_v in_o the_o conscience_n thus_o have_v you_o hear_v by_o way_n of_o use_n 1._o a_o conviction_n that_o many_o person_n be_v still_o have_v not_o their_o heart_n soften_v by_o the_o word_n yet_o many_o other_o have_v their_o heart_n soften_v by_o it_o simile_n as_o although_o many_o who_o take_v physic_n be_v nothing_o better_o by_o it_o yet_o many_o who_o do_v so_o be_v recover_v by_o it_o and_o this_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o though_o the_o word_n be_v the_o savour_n of_o death_n unto_o death_n unto_o some_o yet_o it_o be_v the_o savour_n of_o life_n unto_o life_n unto_o other_o and_o as_o we_o must_v not_o conclude_v that_o the_o word_n be_v not_o the_o mean_n of_o save_a faith_n because_o all_o that_o hear_v the_o word_n do_v not_o believe_v so_o neither_o must_v we_o deny_v the_o word_n as_o a_o mean_n to_o soften_v the_o heart_n because_o many_o who_o do_v hear_v it_o do_v remain_v harden_v but_o if_o we_o find_v first_o that_o god_n have_v institute_v his_o word_n for_o such_o a_o purpose_n and_o end_n second_o that_o god_n have_v bless_v his_o word_n and_o make_v it_o effectual_a to_o that_o purpose_n three_o do_v call_v even_o sinner_n to_o come_v and_o attend_v that_o they_o may_v attain_v that_o blessing_n depend_v upon_o this_o word_n and_o last_o that_o without_o the_o attendance_n upon_o the_o word_n there_o be_v no_o enjoyment_n of_o that_o softness_n of_o heart_n but_o a_o great_a access_n and_o confirmation_n of_o hardness_n of_o heart_n thence_o we_o may_v confident_o conclude_v that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v a_o mean_n to_o soften_v the_o heart_n but_o 3._o you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o efficacy_n of_o spiritual_a mean_n do_v not_o depend_v upon_o the_o mere_a presence_n of_o the_o mean_n but_o upon_o the_o concomitancy_n and_o influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n who_o sometime_o do_v put_v forth_o his_o power_n through_o those_o mean_n and_o sometime_o do_v not_o so_o the_o word_n by_o its_o own_o natural_a and_o proper_a vigour_n do_v not_o convince_v nor_o convert_v nor_o soften_v the_o heart_n for_o then_o every_o one_o that_o hear_v it_o shall_v be_v convince_v and_o convert_v and_o soften_v nor_o then_o shall_v it_o be_v a_o mean_n but_o a_o principal_a efficient_a but_o those_o effect_n it_o do_v work_v on_o all_o who_o hear_v it_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v with_o the_o word_n unto_o their_o heart_n in_o his_o mighty_a power_n work_v that_o grace_n in_o we_o which_o the_o word_n command_v from_o we_o and_o
