good_a and_o evil_a for_o there_o be_v and_o doubtless_o as_o yet_o there_o be_v very_o great_a virtue_n in_o plant_n but_o at_o the_o first_o in_o respect_n it_o be_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n creation_n their_o virtue_n be_v before_o the_o curse_n pure_a and_o void_a of_o all_o mixture_n have_v in_o they_o a_o strong_a operation_n and_o it_o be_v not_o therefore_o strange_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v by_o god_n providence_n the_o taste_n of_o a_o certain_a tree_n that_o shall_v have_v a_o power_n give_v to_o engender_v in_o our_o first_o parent_n the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o but_o thereby_o fall_v from_o the_o state_n of_o grow_v to_o perfection_n and_o busy_v himself_o in_o take_v care_n for_o such_o thing_n as_o the_o body_n need_v for_o according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o moses_n as_o soon_o as_o he_o have_v eat_v he_o know_v that_o he_o be_v naked_a and_o immediate_o seek_v about_o to_o get_v a_o cover_n for_o his_o nakedness_n whereas_o till_o then_o god_n keep_v he_o as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o trance_n and_o in_o such_o case_n that_o he_o know_v not_o himself_o when_o he_o fall_v away_o from_o the_o state_n of_o grow_v to_o perfection_n he_o fall_v also_o from_o his_o immortality_n which_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o his_o creator_n he_o shall_v recover_v again_o at_o the_o last_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n it_o be_v grant_v he_o that_o he_o shall_v eat_v flesh_n whereas_o before_o his_o fall_n god_n will_v he_o to_o be_v content_a with_o such_o thing_n only_o as_o grow_v out_o of_o the_o earth_n all_o which_o he_o have_v provide_v for_o he_o in_o paradise_n yea_o the_o first_o mean_n of_o grow_v to_o perfection_n be_v become_v desperate_a it_o be_v permit_v he_o to_o feed_v as_o he_o will_v now_o see_v man_n consist_v of_o a_o body_n as_o of_o
lifelesse-body_n there_o may_v be_v a_o perfect_a union_n for_o the_o possibility_n of_o this_o thing_n appear_v somewhat_o doubtful_a and_o it_o be_v much_o the_o more_o doubtful_a it_o man_n consist_v not_o of_o these_o two_o part_n only_o but_o of_o understand_v also_o as_o a_o distinct_a thing_n which_o be_v the_o opinion_n of_o some_o but_o the_o great_a doubt_n of_o all_o arise_v in_o this_o respect_n that_o all_o those_o thing_n which_o concur_v unto_o the_o make_n of_o one_o essence_n be_v join_v all_o together_o in_o the_o make_n of_o that_o one_o see_v all_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v unite_v to_o the_o make_v up_o of_o another_o thing_n be_v usual_o so_o alter_v that_o they_o remain_v not_o the_o same_o they_o be_v before_o as_o it_o shall_v plain_o be_v declare_v in_o our_o treaty_n of_o the_o four_o element_n how_o then_o can_v the_o body_n be_v unite_v unto_o the_o soul_n remain_v still_o a_o body_n or_o how_o can_v the_o soul_n be_v incorporeal_a and_o have_v a_o substance_n of_o his_o own_o be_v unite_v with_o the_o body_n and_o become_v a_o part_n of_o the_o living-creature_n preserve_v still_o his_o own_o proper_a substance_n without_o corruption_n and_o confusion_n it_o seem_v to_o be_v no_o way_n else_o possible_a but_o that_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n must_v by_o their_o union_n one_o with_o other_o either_o become_v alter_v one_o with_o the_o other_o or_o corrupt_v with_o each_o other_o as_o the_o element_n be_v or_o else_o to_o avoid_v those_o absurdity_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v true_o unite_v but_o be_v so_o join_v only_o as_o dancer_n be_v in_o their_o dance_n or_o lie_v one_o by_o the_o other_o as_o counter_n in_o a_o sum_n or_o at_o best_o be_v so_o mix_v as_o wine_n and_o water_n but_o we_o have_v already_o declare_v in_o my_o treatise_n upon_o the_o soul_n that_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v lay_v as_o it_o be_v along_o by_o the_o body_n because_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o that_o part_n only_o of_o the_o body_n shall_v have_v life_n in_o it_o which_o join_v near_o unto_o the_o soul_n and_o that_o the_o part_n which_o the_o soul_n touch_v not_o shall_v be_v without_o life_n moreover_o we_o can_v say_v that_o two_o sundry_a thing_n place_v one_o beside_o the_o other_o as_o two_o piece_n of_o timber_n two_o iron_n wedge_n or_o such_o like_a be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n and_o as_o for_o such_o a_o mixture_n as_o be_v make_v of_o wine_n and_o water_n we_o know_v it_o corrupt_v both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o for_o there_o do_v remain_v neither_o pure_a water_n nor_o pure_a wine_n after_o such_o a_o mixture_n yet_o this_o mixture_n of_o wine_n and_o water_n be_v but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o lay_v of_o they_o one_o beside_o another_o though_o our_o sense_n be_v not_o able_a to_o apprehend_v the_o same_o because_o they_o be_v hinder_v from_o perceive_v it_o by_o the_o thinness_n of_o the_o part_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v mix_v for_o the_o wine_n and_o water_n may_v be_v separate_v again_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o by_o a_o sponge_n dip_v in_o oil_n or_o by_o paper_n either_o of_o which_o will_v suck_v away_o the_o pair_v water_n from_o the_o wine_n but_o indeed_o it_o be_v utter_o impossible_a to_o separate_v sensible_o one_o from_o the_o other_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v exact_o unite_v if_o therefore_o the_o part_n of_o man_n be_v neither_o unite_a nor_o place_v one_o beside_o the_o other_o nor_o mix_v together_o as_o aforesaid_a what_o reason_n shall_v move_v we_o to_o say_v that_o one_o live_v creature_n be_v make_v of_o these_o two_o part_n a_o soul_n and_o a_o body_n it_o be_v the_o consideration_n hereof_o which_o partly_o move_v plato_n to_o imagine_v that_o this_o living-creature_n do_v not_o consist_v of_o soul_n and_o body_n but_o that_o he_o be_v a_o soul_n have_v the_o use_n of_o the_o body_n and_o to_o who_o the_o body_n serve_v as_o a_o garment_n but_o even_o in_o affirm_v that_o he_o occasion_v as_o much_o doubt_n for_o how_o can_v the_o soul_n be_v one_o with_o what_o be_v but_o his_o garment_n see_v a_o coat_n be_v not_o all_o one_o with_o he_o that_o wear_v it_o but_o amonius_n who_o be_v master_n to_o plotinus_n thus_o dissolve_v this_o question_n even_o by_o affirm_v that_o intelligible_a thing_n have_v such_o a_o nature_n as_o may_v both_o be_v unite_v unto_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v capable_a of_o they_o and_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v corrupt_v together_o in_o their_o unite_n and_o yet_o remain_v as_o true_o without_o confusion_n or_o corruption_n when_o they_o be_v unite_v as_o those_o thing_n do_v which_o be_v but_o lay_v along_o one_o by_o another_o it_o be_v true_a that_o bodily-thing_n be_v perfect_o unite_v together_o must_v of_o necessity_n suffer_v alteration_n by_o their_o union_n and_o be_v change_v in_o every_o one_o of_o those_o part_n which_o concur_v thereunto_o because_o they_o be_v thereby_o change_v into_o other_o body_n as_o be_v the_o element_n make_v compound_a body_n or_o as_o nourishment_n be_v change_v into_o blood_n or_o as_o the_o blood_n when_o it_o be_v convert_v into_o flesh_n and_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n but_o thing_n intelligible_a may_v be_v unite_v and_o yet_o no_o alteration_n of_o the_o substance_n thereupon_o ensue_v for_o it_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o intelligible-thing_n to_o be_v alter_v in_o substance_n but_o either_o it_o depart_v away_o or_o be_v bring_v to_o nothing_o and_o so_o can_v admit_v no_o alteration_n the_o soul_n be_v immortal_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v corrupt_v or_o bring_v to_o nothing_o for_o than_o it_o can_v not_o be_v immortal_a it_o be_v also_o life_n itself_o and_o therefore_o can_v be_v change_v in_o the_o mixture_n for_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v change_v in_o the_o union_n it_o shall_v be_v alter_v from_o be_v life_n any_o more_o and_o what_o shall_v the_o soul_n profit_v the_o body_n if_o it_o give_v not_o life_n thereunto_o all_o these_o argument_n consider_v it_o must_v be_v conclude_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o alter_v by_o be_v unite_v unto_o the_o body_n have_v thus_o prove_v that_o the_o substance_n of_o of_o the_o other_o that_o they_o be_v nevertheless_o perfect_o unite_v be_v manifest_v by_o this_o that_o either_o of_o they_o partake_v of_o that_o which_o chance_v to_o the_o whole_a living-creature_n for_o the_o whole_a man_n grieve_v as_o one_o creature_n if_o any_o cause_n of_o grief_n happen_v to_o the_o one_o part_n or_o the_o other_o to_o the_o soul_n or_o to_o the_o body_n and_o it_o be_v as_o plain_a that_o they_o remain_v unite_v without_o confusion_n in_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v separate_v after_o a_o sort_n from_o the_o body_n when_o we_o be_v asleep_a and_o leave_v the_o body_n lie_v in_o manner_n of_o a_o dead_a corpse_n and_o only_o breathe_v into_o the_o same_o as_o it_o be_v certain_a vapour_n of_o life_n lest_o it_o shall_v utter_o perish_v do_v work_v by_o itself_o in_o dream_n while_o the_o body_n sleep_v foresee_v thing_n to_o come_v and_o exercise_v itself_o mere_o in_o thing_n intelligible_a the_o like_a happen_v when_o the_o mind_n be_v very_o serious_o occupy_v in_o contemplation_n &_o enter_v into_o the_o consideration_n of_o intellectuall-thing_n for_o even_o than_o the_o soul_n endeavour_n by_o all_o possible_a mean_n to_o be_v call_v the_o gift_n of_o fortune_n neither_o do_v we_o account_v those_o to_o be_v at_o our_o dispose_n which_o have_v their_o event_n from_o providence_n but_o we_o affirm_v those_o action_n only_o to_o be_v in_o our_o power_n which_o be_v according_a to_o vice_n or_o virtue_n as_o also_o our_o motion_n or_o choice_n of_o thing_n or_o else_o such_o thing_n whereof_o we_o may_v do_v the_o in_o one_o these_o thing_n consider_v it_o be_v most_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n we_o shall_v affirm_v according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o incorporeall-thing_n and_o as_o be_v aforesaid_a that_o
