read_v the_o history_n of_o the_o passion_n as_o the_o four_o evangelist_n do_v set_v forth_o the_o same_o and_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o certain_a godly_a book_n or_o else_o to_o be_v learn_v at_o sermon_n or_o by_o other_o spiritual_a talk_n so_o that_o thou_o must_v travel_v to_o have_v the_o same_o well_o fix_v and_o root_v in_o thy_o memory_n imagine_v and_o think_v always_o upon_o it_o chew_v it_o in_o thy_o mind_n until_o thou_o find_v thyself_o so_o ready_a and_o prompt_a in_o it_o that_o if_o thou_o be_v oppose_v in_o any_o part_n of_o the_o history_n of_o the_o passion_n thou_o may_v be_v able_a to_o answer_v to_o it_o &_o declare_v it_o perfect_o and_o to_o this_o it_o shall_v help_v thou_o often_o to_o exercise_v thyself_o in_o meditation_n of_o christ_n passion_n also_o to_o this_o manner_n it_o do_v apperteine_a to_o call_v to_o thy_o remembrance_n according_a to_o that_o which_o thou_o have_v read_v or_o learn_v by_o book_n or_o preach_v that_o whatsoever_o thou_o see_v in_o thy_o contemplation_n thy_o saviour_n to_o have_v suffer_v they_o be_v before_o figure_v and_o foreshowen_v by_o many_o holy_a prophet_n and_o so_o thou_o shall_v know_v and_o well_o perceive_v that_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o thou_o go_v about_o to_o meditate_v do_v answer_n to_o the_o old_a figure_n and_o ancient_a prophecy_n the_o which_o shall_v minister_v great_a cause_n of_o consolation_n and_o more_o confirm_v thou_o in_o faith_n and_o also_o chase_v and_o drive_v away_o all_o other_o fancy_n which_o distract_v the_o mind_n and_o make_v the_o same_o more_o attentive_a and_o benâ—_n to_o the_o matter_n in_o meditation_n and_o so_o this_o shall_v be_v as_o a_o beginning_n to_o pass_v further_o to_o the_o other_o consideration_n ¶_o a_o declaration_n of_o the_o second_o manner_n of_o meditation_n which_o be_v by_o way_n of_o compassion_n the_o second_o manner_n of_o meditation_n upon_o the_o bless_a passion_n which_o be_v by_o way_n of_o compassion_n be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o our_o lord_n and_o that_o be_v to_o endeavour_n to_o travel_v in_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n with_o he_o and_o it_o be_v also_o no_o less_o profitable_a for_o we_o for_o that_o as_o saint_n paul_n say_v if_o we_o will_v suffer_v with_o christ_n we_o shall_v also_o reign_v together_o with_o christ_n in_o this_o kind_a the_o matter_n of_o meditation_n be_v so_o plentiful_a and_o copious_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v long_o to_o write_v or_o meditate_v the_o same_o at_o large_a and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v suffice_v to_o consider_v therein_o two_o point_n to_o the_o which_o the_o other_o may_v be_v reduce_v that_o be_v use_v for_o that_o purpose_n to_o be_v consider_v of_o the_o first_o be_v to_o consider_v the_o person_n that_o suffer_v the_o second_o to_o without_o spot_n the_o brightness_n of_o eternal_a life_n this_o well_o consider_v and_o call_v to_o thy_o remembrance_n shall_v strike_v into_o thy_o hart_n great_a hatred_n and_o repentance_n of_o devotion_n and_o sweetness_n at_o the_o first_o or_o second_o point_n of_o that_o thou_o haste_v to_o meditate_v upon_o than_o stay_n thyself_o in_o consideration_n of_o that_o as_o long_o as_o thy_o devotion_n shall_v endure_v and_o the_o inward_a feeling_n thereof_o without_o have_v any_o doubt_n or_o scruple_n at_o all_o for_o not_o pass_v any_o further_a to_o meditate_v upon_o the_o other_o point_n remain_v because_o it_o avayl_v more_o to_o meditate_v a_o few_o thing_n well_o with_o devotion_n and_o fruit_n than_o many_o without_o taste_n and_o sweetness_n and_o chief_o that_o those_o point_n which_o for_o this_o cause_n be_v leave_v unmeditate_v upon_o at_o one_o time_n may_v be_v take_v in_o hand_n another_o time_n and_o recompense_v in_o thy_o meditation_n follow_v and_o of_o this_o that_o may_v be_v well_o understand_v which_o saint_n paul_n affirm_v that_o it_o be_v better_a to_o speak_v five_o word_n with_o a_o spiritual_a feel_v or_o edify_v then_o ten_o thousand_o without_o attention_n and_o spirit_n with_o these_o three_o advice_n thou_o may_v serve_v thyself_o and_o which_o i_o trust_v shall_v be_v profitable_a unto_o thou_o for_o the_o time_n thou_o be_v dispose_v to_o make_v thy_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n afterward_o for_o even_o as_o water_v which_o be_v already_o hot_a may_v be_v so_o keep_v in_o the_o same_o heat_n with_o a_o little_a fire_n the_o which_o if_o you_o suffer_v it_o once_o to_o be_v lose_v it_o become_v cold_a and_o be_v not_o without_o more_o pain_n again_o make_v hot_a so_o likewise_o chance_v it_o to_o the_o soul_n in_o preserve_v or_o suffer_v it_o to_o loose_v the_o heat_n which_o it_o once_o receyve_v and_o to_o this_o end_n the_o bless_a man_n in_o time_n paste_n do_v use_v oftentimes_o in_o the_o day_n those_o kind_n of_o prayer_n which_o in_o latin_a they_o term_v jaculatoriae_n which_o be_v no_o more_o but_o certain_a short_a elevation_n or_o lyft_v uppe_o of_o the_o mind_n and_o sweet_a sigh_n which_o they_o speedy_o shoot_v up_o to_o god_n that_o by_o they_o as_o it_o be_v with_o certain_a stycke_n lay_v to_o the_o fire_n they_o maintain_v and_o continue_v that_o heat_n still_o which_o they_o have_v before_o receive_v and_o this_o a_o man_n may_v do_v easy_o although_o he_o be_v occupy_v about_o diverse_a other_o business_n &_o exercise_n the_o second_o advice_n be_v that_o sometime_o in_o the_o week_n or_o when_o thou_o best_a may_v thou_o find_v a_o time_n to_o examine_v thyself_o and_o to_o see_v whether_o thou_o have_v go_v forward_o or_o get_v any_o profit_n of_o thy_o pray_n and_o when_o thou_o shall_v see_v that_o thou_o have_v profit_v nothing_o at_o all_o nor_o find_v in_o thyself_o any_o difference_n of_o one_o time_n better_o than_o a_o other_o then_o examyne_n and_o try_v out_o from_o what_o cause_n it_o proceed_v &_o thou_o shall_v always_o find_v that_o it_o happen_v of_o some_o fault_n or_o lack_n in_o thyself_o either_o for_o not_o mortify_v thyself_o which_o be_v necessary_a in_o this_o exercise_n or_o for_o not_o do_v it_o with_o due_a care_n &_o diligence_n or_o for_o not_o follow_v the_o advice_n which_o be_v give_v thou_o or_o for_o some_o other_o negligence_n of_o thy_o own_o and_o for_o what_o cause_n soever_o thou_o shall_v understand_v that_o this_o small_a increase_n of_o devotion_n and_o profit_v have_v proceed_v procure_v yet_o to_o mortification_n of_o their_o passion_n their_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o affection_n and_o to_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v well_o their_o soul_n and_o those_o which_o have_v further_o enter_v and_o proceed_v ought_v chief_o to_o labour_n and_o care_n to_o attain_v the_o virtue_n which_o they_o lack_v and_o to_o increase_v and_o augment_v the_o same_o special_o their_o charity_n and_o those_o which_o be_v more_o ancient_a as_o it_o be_v and_o more_o forward_o enter_v into_o perfection_n have_v to_o travel_v for_o the_o perfect_a union_n and_o conformity_n with_o god_n in_o make_v one_o spirit_n with_o he_o as_o much_o as_o shall_v be_v possible_a for_o they_o although_o sometime_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o one_o of_o these_o may_v attend_v to_o the_o end_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o other_o according_a to_o this_o advice_n than_o you_o may_v understande_v when_o you_o have_v profit_v more_o or_o less_o or_o nothing_o at_o all_o and_o so_o study_v to_o remedy_n that_o shall_v be_v convenient_a the_o three_o and_o last_o advice_n be_v that_o although_o perchance_o it_o seem_v in_o long_a time_n thou_o have_v little_a profit_v or_o that_o thou_o be_v nothing_o give_v to_o this_o exercise_n of_o meditation_n nor_o feel_v in_o thyself_o that_o devotion_n nor_o such_o taste_n therein_o as_o thou_o will_v yet_o ought_v thou_o not_o therefore_o to_o despair_v or_o slack_v to_o proceed_v forward_o because_o that_o even_o as_o in_o other_o good_a work_n perseveraunce_n be_v it_o that_o make_v all_o perfect_a &_o crow_v every_o virtue_n with_o reward_n so_o also_o it_o happen_v in_o this_o so_o holy_a &_o necessary_a a_o work_n of_o prayer_n that_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o thou_o shall_v persevere_v and_o continue_v thy_o good_a exercise_n therein_o so_o much_o thou_o shall_v the_o more_o merit_n and_o god_n shall_v give_v thou_o in_o process_n of_o time_n so_o much_o the_o more_o comfort_n and_o reward_v as_o thou_o have_v feel_v thyself_o dry_a and_o faint_a in_o the_o beginning_n for_o oftentimes_o god_n permit_v that_o some_o be_v find_v dry_a and_o bare_a of_o all_o devotion_n without_o all_o taste_n and_o savourinesse_n in_o their_o meditation_n to_o the_o intent_n that_o how_o much_o the_o more_o they_o labour_v and_o travel_v to_o persevere_v and_o continue_v in_o the_o same_o so_o much_o the_o more_o comfort_n and_o fruit_n they_o receive_v afterward_o in_o reward_n of_o their_o perseverance_n for_o even_o as_o god_n do_v in_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n first_o frame_v the_o earth_n to_o be_v hard_a and_o dry_a and_o then_o cover_v it_o with_o water_n that_o so_o it_o may_v fructify_v and_o produce_v plant_n of_o diverse_a green_a and_o fruitful_a tree_n so_o also_o the_o same_o our_o lord_n god_n permit_v some_o soul_n to_o be_v find_v in_o their_o prayer_n dry_a and_o barren_a without_o taste_n or_o savour_n of_o devotion_n at_o all_o that_o by_o their_o patience_n in_o perseveraunce_n of_o this_o travel_n of_o mind_n and_o loathsomeness_n they_o come_v afterward_o to_o bring_v forth_o fair_a fruit_n and_o plentiful_a of_o much_o virtue_n and_o grace_n which_o shall_v be_v bestow_v on_o they_o
