be_v know_v 7_o for_o we_o have_v great_a joy_n and_o consolation_n in_o thy_o love_n because_o by_o thou_o brother_n the_o saint_n bowel_n be_v comfort_v word_n the_o method_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n in_o this_o place_n we_o have_v the_o shut_n up_o of_o the_o entrance_n of_o this_o epistle_n we_o hear_v before_o how_o paul_n give_v thanks_o to_o god_n for_o philemon_n he_o pray_v for_o he_o &_o that_o daily_o he_o praise_v great_o his_o faith_n towards_o christ_n and_o his_o love_n towards_o the_o saint_n that_o be_v the_o poor_a and_o distress_a christian_n these_o word_n do_v depend_v upon_o the_o four_o verse_n for_o we_o must_v know_v that_o the_o apostle_n go_v not_o on_o in_o the_o praise_n and_o commendation_n of_o philemon_n begin_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n magnify_v his_o faith_n and_o love_n whereof_o he_o have_v hear_v by_o the_o report_n of_o the_o church_n but_o they_o agree_v with_o that_o which_o he_o have_v speak_v before_o namely_o that_o he_o be_v mindful_a of_o he_o in_o his_o prayer_n for_o if_o it_o be_v ask_v for_o what_o cause_n do_v he_o pray_v for_o philemon_n the_o answer_n be_v to_o the_o end_n that_o his_o faith_n show_v forth_o good_a fruit_n may_v not_o be_v find_v counterfeit_a but_o approve_v to_o be_v true_a we_o have_v therefore_o in_o these_o two_o verse_n these_o two_o thing_n to_o consider_v first_o what_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o prayer_n what_o be_v the_o substance_n and_o content_n of_o they_o to_o wit_n that_o he_o may_v manifest_v his_o faith_n not_o to_o lie_v idle_a but_o to_o be_v extend_v to_o other_o second_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o make_v that_o the_o matter_n of_o his_o prayer_n &_o wherefore_o he_o pray_v that_o his_o faith_n may_v be_v effectual_a touch_v the_o first_o point_n which_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o prayer_n he_o crave_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o his_o faith_n may_v be_v make_v common_a to_o many_o &_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o may_v comfortable_o flow_v to_o the_o refresh_n of_o many_o soul_n for_o although_o faith_n have_v she_o secret_a and_o hide_a dwelling_n in_o the_o hart_n yet_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o be_v impart_v to_o other_o second_o that_o it_o may_v be_v effectual_a now_o faith_n be_v effectual_a when_o it_o work_v by_o love_n &_o bring_v forth_o good_a work_n to_o the_o relieve_v of_o other_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v have_v say_v that_o thy_o faith_n by_o communicate_v itself_o to_o other_o &_o not_o remain_v with_o thyself_o alone_o may_v more_o &_o more_o show_v the_o virtue_n force_n and_o power_n thereof_o in_o all_o goodness_n thus_o he_o pray_v not_o only_o for_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n to_o be_v give_v unto_o he_o then_o he_o declare_v wherein_o this_o effectual_a faith_n stand_v &_o consist_v to_o wit_n in_o the_o acknowledge_v of_o those_o good_a thing_n which_o be_v in_o he_o that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v bring_v into_o the_o light_n to_o be_v see_v of_o all_o man_n &_o to_o be_v feel_v of_o those_o that_o be_v in_o need_n for_o the_o apostle_n james_n as_o we_o have_v show_v call_v that_o not_o a_o effectual_a or_o live_a faith_n 20._o faith_n james_n 2_o 20._o but_o a_o dead_a &_o idle_a faith_n which_o be_v not_o declare_v and_o profess_v by_o work_n in_o the_o last_o place_n he_o add_v through_o jesus_n christ_n whereby_o he_o mean_v that_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n we_o have_v in_o we_o we_o have_v it_o by_o christ_n without_o who_o we_o have_v nothing_o that_o be_v good_a touch_v the_o second_o point_n which_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o he_o pray_v for_o a_o effectual_a faith_n in_o he_o because_o the_o love_n that_o appear_v to_o be_v in_o he_o have_v wrought_v great_a joy_n and_o gladness_n of_o hart_n in_o he_o which_o love_n of_o his_o he_o commend_v by_o the_o effect_n the_o bowel_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v comfort_v through_o he_o this_o fact_n of_o he_o the_o apostle_n commend_v first_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o person_n to_o who_o his_o love_n be_v manifest_v not_o to_o those_o out_o of_o the_o church_n but_o to_o the_o saint_n for_o charity_n to_o the_o saint_n be_v to_o be_v commend_v inasmuch_o as_o it_o can_v be_v bestow_v on_o a_o better_a subject_n they_o do_v stand_v in_o the_o place_n of_o christ_n who_o accept_v of_o our_o love_n &_o liberality_n as_o extend_v towards_o himself_o second_o his_o love_n be_v commend_v by_o the_o name_n of_o bowel_n whereby_o the_o extreme_a necessity_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v signify_v who_o be_v as_o it_o be_v pain_v in_o their_o bowel_n and_o inward_a part_n now_o the_o great_a poverty_n &_o penury_n of_o those_o upon_o who_o we_o bestow_v our_o charity_n increase_v and_o make_v it_o the_o great_a three_o 28_o three_o math._n 11_o 28_o the_o word_n of_o comfort_v refresh_a and_o cherrish_v the_o heart_n be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a commendation_n for_o it_o be_v no_o small_a thing_n to_o comfort_n and_o strengthen_v the_o weak_a and_o feeble_a and_o to_o give_v rest_n to_o the_o soul_n &_o body_n that_o have_v be_v toss_v &_o trouble_v with_o much_o affliction_n thus_o do_v
the_o apostle_n set_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o philemon_n love_n most_o effectualy_a this_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v of_o we_o concern_v the_o method_n and_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n which_o be_v thus_o much_o in_o effect_n if_o thou_o will_v more_v full_o know_v the_o cause_n of_o my_o give_a thanks_o and_o the_o remembrance_n of_o thou_o in_o my_o prayer_n sure_o it_o be_v this_o that_o as_o god_n in_o mercy_n have_v bestow_v upon_o thou_o a_o true_a save_a faith_n so_o my_o earnest_a desire_n and_o humble_a request_n be_v unto_o he_o that_o the_o office_n fruit_n and_o duty_n of_o thy_o faith_n may_v be_v more_o and_o more_o communicate_v and_o fit_v to_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o poor_a saint_n that_o so_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o thou_o through_o the_o grace_n and_o work_n of_o jesus_n christ_n may_v be_v acknowledge_v manifest_a and_o publish_v abroad_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n the_o comfort_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o the_o provocation_n of_o other_o for_o indeed_o thy_o love_n give_v i_o great_a occasion_n of_o much_o joy_n because_o thou_o my_o brother_n do_v not_o only_o cheer_v the_o saint_n and_o reioyc_a they_o but_o cause_v their_o very_a heart_n and_o bowel_n even_o their_o secret_a and_o inward_a part_n to_o be_v refresh_v &_o rejoice_v verse_n diverse_a point_n to_o be_v observe_v out_o of_o these_o verse_n but_o before_o we_o handle_v the_o doctrine_n arise_v in_o this_o division_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v amiss_o a_o little_a to_o examine_v the_o force_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o manner_n that_o paul_n have_v observe_v in_o the_o pen_n of_o they_o first_o observe_v that_o he_o say_v not_o simple_o thy_o faith_n may_v be_v make_v effectual_a but_o the_o fellowship_n of_o thy_o faith_n that_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o may_v redown_a and_o return_n to_o many_o second_o he_o say_v not_o bare_o that_o his_o faith_n may_v be_v know_v but_o every_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v every_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n because_o when_o faith_n be_v make_v know_v to_o other_o and_o bring_v into_o sight_n &_o open_a light_n many_o other_o gift_n of_o the_o holy-ghost_n be_v make_v know_v as_o love_n patience_n liberality_n and_o such_o like_a for_o the_o grace_n of_o faith_n be_v never_o alone_o in_o the_o heart_n but_o be_v guard_v with_o a_o troop_n and_o company_n of_o all_o other_o virtue_n and_o when_o it_o come_v as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o the_o door_n it_o come_v abroad_o with_o a_o band_n and_o train_n of_o all_o other_o grace_n three_o he_o declare_v the_o author_n and_o cause_n of_o all_o these_o blessing_n from_o whence_o they_o proceed_v to_o wit_n from_o christ_n that_o we_o shall_v learn_v not_o to_o think_v or_o speak_v of_o any_o benefit_n without_o make_v mention_n of_o christ_n four_o he_o draw_v a_o argument_n or_o reason_n why_o he_o pray_v for_o the_o efficacy_n of_o his_o faith_n from_o the_o former_a experience_n of_o his_o love_n which_o be_v as_o effectual_a as_o his_o faith_n teach_v that_o the_o experience_n of_o grace_n already_o give_v shall_v move_v we_o to_o beg_v and_o crave_v the_o increase_n of_o that_o grace_n and_o a_o perseverance_n and_o continuance_n in_o that_o grace_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o be_v so_o simple_a or_o senseless_a to_o imagine_v when_o we_o see_v grace_n bestow_v upon_o any_o man_n that_o we_o have_v no_o more_o need_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o increase_n and_o grow_v of_o that_o grace_n for_o we_o must_v know_v that_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v a_o first_o grace_n there_o be_v a_o second_o grace_n now_o that_o grace_n may_v be_v multiply_v and_o a_o continual_a increase_n and_o access_n to_o it_o may_v be_v add_v we_o must_v make_v daily_a prayer_n we_o must_v pray_v that_o we_o may_v have_v faith_n and_o when_o we_o have_v it_o we_o must_v not_o be_v secure_a but_o pray_v that_o it_o may_v be_v effectual_a and_o work_v by_o love_n last_o of_o all_o in_o the_o commend_v of_o philemon_n liberality_n locum_fw-la liberality_n theophil_n in_o hunc_fw-la locum_fw-la he_o do_v not_o naked_o say_v that_o he_o give_v to_o the_o now_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o doctrine_n that_o the_o fellowship_n of_o thy_o faith_n may_v be_v make_v effectual_a here_o the_o apostle_n remember_v the_o matter_n and_o substance_n of_o his_o prayer_n what_o it_o be_v that_o he_o beseech_v and_o request_v of_o god_n where_o we_o see_v he_o affirm_v that_o it_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o faith_n may_v be_v increase_v &_o continual_o augment_v thing_n doctrine_n 1._o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o stir_v up_o our_o self_n &_o other_o to_o increase_v in_o good_a thing_n we_o learn_v from_o this_o place_n that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o all_o man_n earnest_o to_o desire_v wish_v and_o procure_v the_o good_a of_o other_o and_o to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o &_o other_o to_o increase_v in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n the_o grow_a and_o proceed_v of_o our_o brethren_n in_o the_o best_a thing_n shall_v be_v seek_v for_o of_o us._n when_o moses_n have_v word_n bring_v unto_o he_o that_o some_o in_o the_o host_n do_v prophesy_v that_o be_v have_v receive_v notable_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o the_o guide_n and_o direct_v of_o his_o people_n he_o say_v 29_o say_v num._n 12_o 29_o to_o all_o that_o believe_v in_o macedonia_n from_o they_o sound_v out_o the_o word_n into_o all_o quarter_n they_o receive_v it_o not_o as_o the_o word_n of_o man_n but_o as_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o work_v in_o they_o that_o believe_v touch_v the_o time_n and_o season_n he_o have_v no_o need_n to_o write_v unto_o they_o because_o they_o know_v perfect_o that_o
