nature_n of_o the_o thing_n or_o the_o sense_n and_o reason_n of_o mankind_n work_v thereupon_o as_o for_o instance_n moses_n say_v god_n make_v two_o great_a light_n viz._n the_o sun_n and_o moon_n this_o seem_v to_o intend_v that_o these_o two_o be_v the_o big_a luminary_n yet_o when_o astronomer_n teach_v the_o moon_n to_o be_v the_o least_o or_o one_o of_o the_o least_o among_o those_o luminary_n man_n do_v rather_o choose_v to_o believe_v they_o and_o collect_v that_o moses_n do_v not_o intend_v to_o teach_v in_o that_o matter_n but_o speak_v at_o large_a according_a to_o common_a apprehension_n and_o so_o upon_o the_o question_n whether_o our_o day_n and_o night_n be_v make_v by_o a_o circuit_n of_o the_o sun_n about_o the_o earth_n in_o every_o 24_o hour_n or_o by_o the_o circunvolution_n of_o the_o earth_n itself_o in_o that_o space_n of_o time_n the_o expression_n of_o scripture_n viz._n jos_n 10.12_o and_o psal_n 19_o and_o 2_o kin._n 19_o which_o do_v all_o favour_n the_o go_n of_o the_o sun_n about_o the_o earth_n and_o yet_o humane_a art_n and_o reason_n have_v late_o so_o far_o prevail_v as_o to_o persuade_v among_o learned_a man_n that_o the_o circumvolution_n of_o the_o earth_n be_v the_o true_a cause_n of_o day_n and_o night_n among_o we_o and_o for_o scripture_n in_o the_o point_n they_o say_v as_o before_z it_o speak_v ad_fw-la capio_fw-la humanum_fw-la of_o that_o time_n grow_v since_o to_o be_v ad_fw-la capturd_v vulgi_fw-la without_o intention_n to_o teach_v the_o truth_n of_o science_n concern_v such_o thing_n the_o all_o who_o be_v conversant_a in_o scripture_n know_v this_o thing_n to_o be_v true_a but_o deplore_o i_o again_o consider_v that_o a_o great_a part_n or_o a_o great_a part_n of_o people_n be_v not_o so_o well_o verss_v in_o this_o book_n as_o to_o be_v without_o need_n of_o proof_n in_o this_o matter_n and_o for_o their_o sake_n i_o take_v upon_o myself_o the_o labour_n of_o somewhat_o a_o troublesome_a induction_n of_o particular_n in_o proof_n of_o this_o truth_n therefore_o i_o quote_v job_n 3.13_o why_o die_v i_o not_o from_o the_o womb_n for_o if_o so_o i_o have_v now_o be_v death_n be_v proper_a and_o true_a i_o have_v a_o great_a inclination_n to_o believe_v that_o the_o scripture_n speak_v proper_o and_o true_o than_o otherwise_o and_o therefore_o do_v conclude_v these_o expression_n be_v proper_a and_o true_a and_o that_o the_o soul_n have_v not_o such_o a_o separate_a subsistence_n as_o above_o be_v describe_v but_o rather_o that_o it_o be_v material_a and_o extinguish_v with_o death_n of_o the_o man._n my_o second_o argument_n for_o positive_a proof_n of_o this_o tenet_n rise_v from_o many_o particular_a place_n of_o scripture_n to_o be_v allege_v and_o produce_v in_o nature_n of_o a_o sorite_n each_o prove_v by_o its_o self_n and_o all_o fortify_v the_o tenet_n intend_v to_o be_v defend_v in_o which_o i_o begin_v from_o a_o scripture_n which_o and_o happiness_n in_o a_o high_a degree_n though_o there_o be_v no_o resurrection_n at_o all_o but_o our_o apostle_n here_o conclude_v all_o christianity_n to_o be_v in_o vain_a without_o a_o resurrection_n and_o the_o next_o verse_n viz._n 19_o he_o say_v if_o in_o this_o life_n only_o we_o have_v hope_n in_o christ_n we_o be_v of_o all_o man_n the_o most_o miserable_a but_o christ_n be_v rise_v and_o by_o he_o come_v also_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a which_o seem_v plain_o infer_v that_o if_o there_o be_v no_o resurrection_n than_o our_o hope_n in_o christ_n can_v extend_v only_o to_o this_o world_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o it_o and_o then_o we_o shall_v be_v more_o miserable_a than_o other_o man_n who_o give_v themselves_o more_o liberty_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o they_o he_o go_v on_o through_o this_o long_a chapter_n to_o treat_v of_o the_o resurrection_n and_o the_o manner_n and_o benefit_n of_o it_o ver._n 58._o he_o conclude_v abound_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n forasmuch_o as_o you_o know_v by_o this_o my_o discourse_n of_o the_o resurrection_n that_o your_o labour_n be_v not_o in_o vain_a in_o the_o lord_n thus_o he_o discourse_v full_o and_o the_o flame_n of_o life_n which_o i_o take_v for_o the_o soul_n extinguish_v in_o death_n as_o dr._n willis_n say_v illico_fw-la nihil_fw-la est_fw-la it_o vanish_v as_o the_o flame_n of_o spirit_n of_o wine_n when_o the_o spirit_n be_v consume_v and_o thus_o i_o conceive_v man_n die_v thus_o they_o rest_v and_o believer_n sleep_v in_o jesus_n till_o time_n of_o the_o restitution_n of_o all_o thing_n job_n 14.12_o even_o as_o the_o flood_n decay_v and_o dry_v up_o so_o man_n lie_v down_o and_o rise_v not_o at_o all_o till_o the_o heaven_n be_v no_o more_o they_o shall_v not_o awake_v of_o social_n glory_n or_o suffer_v or_o a_o blessedness_n in_o partnership_n with_o the_o body_n and_o that_o it_o can_v neither_o exert_v its_o own_o power_n nor_o enjoy_v its_o own_o happiness_n in_o the_o absence_n of_o the_o body_n the_o opinion_n of_o a_o sleep_a interval_n of_o the_o soul_n he_o say_v take_v its_o rise_n from_o this_o error_n they_o conceive_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v so_o dependent_a upon_o the_o body_n at_o least_o in_o all_o its_o operation_n that_o when_o death_n rend_v it_o from_o the_o body_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v leave_v as_o in_o a_o swoon_n or_o sleep_v unable_a to_o exert_v its_o proper_a power_n or_o enjoy_v that_o felicity_n which_o we_o ascribe_v to_o it_o in_o its_o state_n of_o separation_n thus_o our_o author_n to_o which_o i_o reply_v they_o who_o so_o conceive_v be_v father_n very_o ancient_a and_o of_o great_a authority_n in_o the_o church_n and_o in_o my_o opinion_n the_o ground_n they_o stand_v upon_o be_v firm_a and_o good_a viz._n they_o and_o we_o and_o all_o man_n who_o consider_v may_v and_o do_v perceive_v by_o hourly_a experience_n that_o the_o soul_n do_v no_o more_o act_n or_o suffer_v without_o the_o body_n than_o the_o body_n without_o the_o soul_n nor_o either_o of_o they_o without_o the_o other_o this_o constant_a experience_n teach_v to_o this_o also_o reason_n very_o well_o agree_v and_o man_n have_v never_o yet_o meet_v with_o good_a reason_n plain_a experience_n or_o clear_a scripture_n to_o the_o contrary_n nor_o do_v our_o author_n or_o any_o other_o show_v any_o convince_a or_o strong_a or_o likely_a evidence_n that_o ever_o any_o soul_n do_v or_o that_o it_o can_v act_v or_o suffer_v without_o partnership_n with_o the_o body_n and_o in_o conjunction_n with_o it_o it_o may_v be_v ask_v how_o then_o can_v it_o subsist_v in_o a_o state_n of_o separation_n from_o the_o body_n if_o it_o can_v neither_o act_v nor_o suffer_v without_o it_o i_o answer_v that_o i_o be_o not_o to_o account_v for_o such_o a_o subsistence_n because_o i_o deny_v the_o thing_n and_o say_v the_o soul_n extinguish_v in_o death_n but_o those_o who_o hold_v both_o opinion_n viz._n the_o separate_a state_n and_o the_o non-activity_n do_v imaginarily_o cast_v the_o soul_n into_o such_o a_o swoon_n or_o sleep_n as_o the_o author_n mention_n in_o a_o limbus_n or_o dormitory_n create_v by_o invention_n to_o that_o purpose_n and_o those_o who_o so_o believe_v both_o opinion_n be_v necessitate_v to_o invent_v such_o place_n that_o the_o soul_n neither_o act_n nor_o suffer_v without_o the_o body_n be_v true_a and_o the_o separate_a subsistence_n be_v grant_v place_n for_o dormitory_n be_v a_o reasonable_a and_o necessary_a invention_n but_o if_o the_o truth_n stand_v with_o i_o and_o the_o soul_n extinguish_v in_o death_n it_o neither_o act_n nor_o suffer_v without_o the_o body_n nor_o yet_o be_v there_o need_v to_o invent_v dormitory_n or_o purgatory_n for_o reception_n of_o such_o soul_n as_o have_v no_o real_a subsistence_n he_o have_v true_o relate_v a_o cause_n why_o the_o ancient_n do_v believe_v soul_n rest_v in_o dormitory_n till_o the_o resurrection_n not_o go_v to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n till_o that_o time_n and_o a_o reunion_n with_o their_o body_n viz._n because_o they_o believe_v soul_n can_v not_o act_v or_o suffer_v without_o their_o body_n according_a to_o the_o common_a course_n of_o nature_n and_o experience_n this_o i_o agree_v to_o be_v true_a and_o a_o reasonable_a ground_n for_o they_o to_o stand_v upon_o in_o this_o point_n and_o that_o they_o err_v only_o in_o believe_v a_o separate_a subsistence_n whence_o they_o be_v force_v to_o invent_v dormitory_n but_o i_o say_v though_o the_o author_n have_v give_v we_o a_o true_a and_o good_a cause_n why_o the_o ancient_n think_v soul_n go_v not_o to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n before_o the_o resurrection_n ground_v upon_o the_o nature_n and_o constitution_n of_o mankind_n there_o be_v another_o cause_n and_o reason_n for_o their_o so_o believe_v as_o true_a well_o ground_v and_o evident_a as_o the_o former_a which_o will_v weigh_v with_o many_o believer_n more_o than_o that_o can_v do_v
