II. 1 Gods wrath against Moab 4 upon Judah 6 and upon Israel 9 God complaineth of their unthankfulness THis saith the LORD For three transgressions of Moah and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because he * 2 King 3.27 burnt the bones of the king of Edom into lime 2 But I will send a fire upon Moab and it shall devour the palaces of Kirioth and Moab shall die with tumult with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet 3 And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof and will slay all the princes thereof with him saith the LORD 4 ¶ Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Judah and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they have despised the law of the LORD and have not kept his commandments and their lies caused them to err after the which their fathers have walked 5 But I will send a fire upon Judah and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem 6 ¶ Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because * Ch. 8.6 they sold the righteous for ●ilver and the poor for a pair of shoes 7 That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor and turn aside the way of the meek and a man and his father will go in unto the same ‖ Or young woman maid to profane my holy name 8 And they lay themselve down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar and they drink the wine of ‖ Or such as have fined or multied the condemned in the house of their god 9 ¶ Yet destroyed I the * Num. 21.24 Deut. 2.21 Josh 24.8 Amorite before them whose height was like the height of the cedars and he was strong as the oaks yet I destroyed his fruit from above and his foots from beneath 10 Also * Ex. 12.51 I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you fourty years through the wilderness to possess the land of the Amorite 11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets and of your young men for Nazarites Is it not even thus O ye children of Israel saith the LORD 12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink and commanded the prophets * Chap. 7.12.13 saying Prophesie not 13 Behold ‖ Or I will press your place as a cart full of sheaves presseth I am pressed under you as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves 14 Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift and the strong shall not strengthen his force neither shall the mighty deliver † Heb. his soul or life himself 15 Neither shall he stand that handleth the bowe and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself 16 A●● ●e that is † Heb. s●ron● of ●●s heart couragious among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day saith the LORD CHAP. III. 1 The neces●it● of Gods judgement against Israel 9 The publication of it with the causes thereof HEar this word that the LORD hath spoken against you O children of Israel against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt saying 2 You onely have I known of all the families of the earth therefore I will † Heb. visit upon punish you for all your iniquities 3 Can two walk together except they be agreed 4 Will a lion roar in the forest when he hath no prey will a young lion † Heb. give forth his voice cry out of his den if he have taken nothing 5 Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth where no gin is for him shall one take up a snare from the earth and have taken nothing at all 6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city and the people ‖ Or not ●●i● together not be afraid shall there be evil in a city ‖ Or and shall not the LORD do somewhat and the LORD hath not done it 7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets 8 The lion hath roared who will not fear the Lord GOD hath spoken who can but prophesie 9 ¶ Publish in the palaces at Ashdod and in the palaces in the land of Egypt and say Assemble your selves upon the mountains of Samaria and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof and the ‖ Or oppressions oppressed in the midst thereof 10 For they know not to do right saith the LORD who store up violence and ‖ Or spoil robbery in their palaces 11 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD An adversary there shall be even round about the land and he shall bring down thy strength from thee and thy palaces shall be spoiled 12 Thus saith the LORD As the shepherd † Heb. delivereth taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of abed and
are baptized THere was a certain man in Cesarea called Cornelius a centurion of the band called the Italian band 2 A devout man and one that feared God with all his house which gave much alms to the people and prayed to God alway 3 He saw in avision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him and saying unto him Cornelius 4 And when he looked on him he was afraid and said What is it Lord And he said unto him Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God 5 And now send men to Joppa and call for one Simon whose surname is Peter 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner whose house is by the sea-side he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed he called two of his houshold-servants and a devout souldier of them that waited on him continually 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them he sent them to Joppa 9 ¶ On the morrow as they went on their journey and drew nigh unto the city Peter went up upon the house-top to pray about the sixth hour 10 And he became very hungry and would have eaten but while they made ready he fell into a trance 11 And saw heaven opened and a certain vessel descending unto him as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners and let down to the earth 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth and wilde beasts and creeping things and fowls of the air 13 And there came a voice to him Rise Peter kill and eat 14 But Peter said Not so Lord for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time What God hath cleansed that call not thou common 16 This was done thrice and the vessel was received up again into heaven 17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean behold the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simons house and stood before the gate 18 And called and asked whether Simon which was surnamed Peter were lodged there 19 ¶ While Peter thought on the vision the spirit said unto him Behold three men seek thee 20 Arise therefore and get the down and go with them doubting nothing for I have sent them 21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius and said Behold I am he whom ye seek what is the cause wherefore ye are come 22 And they said Cornelius the centurion a just man and one that feareth God and of good report among all the nation of the Jews was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house and to hear words of thee 23 Then called he them in and lodged them And on the morrow Peter went away with them and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him 24 And the morrow after they entred into Cesarea and Cornelius waited for them and had called together his kinsmen near friends 25 And as Peter was coming in Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshipped him 26 But Peter took him up saying Stand up I my self also am a man 27 And as he talked with him he went in and found many that were come together 28 And he said unto them Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company or come unto one of another nation but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean 29 Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying assoon as I was sent for I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me 30 And Cornelius said Four days ago I was fasting until this hour and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house and behold a man stood before me in bright clothing 31 And said Cornelius thy prayer is heard and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God 32 Send therefore to Joppa and call hither Simon whose surname is Peter he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea-side who when he cometh shall speak unto thee 33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee and thou hast well done that thou art come Now therefore are we all here present before God to hear all things that are commanded thee of God 34 ¶ Then Peter opened his mouth and said * Deut. 10.17 Rom. 2.11 1 Pet 1 17. Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons 35 But in every nation he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is accepted with him 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all 37 That word I say you know which was published throughout all Judea and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the holy Ghost and with power who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil for God was with him 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem whom they slew and hanged on a tree 40 Him God raised up the third day and shewed him openly 41 Not to all the people but unto witnesses chosen before of God even to us who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people and to testifie that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead 43 * Jer. 31.34 Mic. 7.18 To him give all the prophets witness that through his name whosoever beleeveth in him shall receive remission of sins 44 ¶ While Peter yet spake these words the holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word 45 And they of the circumcision which beleeved were astonished as many as came with Peter because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the holy Ghost 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnifie God Then answered Peter 47 Can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the holy Ghost as well as we 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days CHAP. XI 1 Peter being accused for going in to the Gentiles 5 maketh his defence 18 which is accepted 19 The gospel being spread into Phenice and Cyprus and Ant●och Barnabas is sent to confirm them 26 The disciples there are first called Christians 27 They send relief to the brethren in Judea in time of famine ANd the apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God 2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem they that were of the circumcision
Keilah † Heb. ●●ut up deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul And the LORD said they will deliver thee up 13 ¶ Then David and his men which were about six hundred arose and departed out of Keilah and went whithersoever they could go and it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah and he forbare to go forth 14 And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph And Saul sought him every day but God delivered him not into his hand 15 And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood 16 And Jonathan Sauls son arose and went to David into the wood and strengthned his hand in God 17 And he said unto him Fear not for the hand of Saul my father shall not finde thee and thou shalt be king over Israel and I shall be next unto thee and that also Saul my father knoweth 18 And they two made a covenant before the LORD and David abode in the wood and Jonathan went to his house 19 ¶ Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah saying Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood in the hill of Hachilah which is † Heb. on the right hand on the south of ‖ Or the wilderness Jeshimon 20 Now therefore O king come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down and our part shall be to deliver him into the kings hand 21 And Saul said Blessed be ye of the LORD for ye have compassion on me 22 Go I pray you prepare yet and know and see his place where his † Heb. foot shall is haunt is and who hath seen him there for it is told me that he dealeth very subtilly 23 See therefore and take knowledge of all the lurking-places where he hideth himself and come ye again to me with the certainty and I will go with you and it shall come to pass if he be in the land that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah 24 And they arose and went to Ziph before Saul but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon in the plain on the south of Jeshimon 25 Saul also and his men went to seek him and they told David where fore he came down into a rock and abode in the wilderness of Maon and when Saul heard that he pursued after David in the Wilderness of Maon 26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain and David and his men on that side of the mountain and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them 27 ¶ But there came a messenger unto Saul saying Haste thee and come for the Philistines have † Heb. spread themselves upon c. invaded the land 28 Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David went against the Philistines therefore they called that place ‖ That is The rock of divisions Sela-hammah-lekoth 29 ¶ And David went up from thence and dwelt in strong holds at En-gedi CHAP. XXIV 1 David in a cave et En-gedi having cut off Sauls skirt spareth his life 8 He sheweth thereby his innocency 16 Saul acknowledging his fault taketh an oath of David and departeth ANd it came to pass when Saul was returned from † Heb. after following the Philistines that it was told him saying Behold David is in the wilderness of En-gedi 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wilde goats 3 And he came to the sheep-cotes by the way where was a cave and Saul went in to cover his feet and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave 4 And the men of David said unto him Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee Behold I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee Then David arose and cut off the skirt of † Heb. the robe which was Sauls Sauls robe privily 5 And it came to pass afterward that Davids heart smote him because he had cut off Sauls skirt 6 And he said unto his men The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master the LORDs anointed to stretch forth mine hand against him seeing he is the anointed of the LORD 7 So David † Heb. cut off stayed his servants with these words and suffered them not to rise against Saul but Saul rose up out of the cave and went on his way 8 David also arose afterward and went out of the cave and cried after Saul saying My lord the king And when Saul looked behinde him David stooped with his face to the earth and bowed himself 9 ¶ And David said to Saul Wherefore hearest thou mens words saying Behold David seeketh thy hurt 10 Behold this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave and some bade me kill thee but mine eye spared thee and I said I will not put forth mine hand against my lord for he is the LORDS anointed 11 Moreover my father see yea see the skirt of thy robe in my hand for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe and killed thee not know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand and I have not sinned against thee yet thou huntest my soul to take it 12 The LORD judge between me and thee and the LORD avenge me of thee but mine hand shall not be upon thee 13 As saith the proverb of the ancients Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked but mine hand shall not be upon thee 14 After whom is the king of Israel come out after whom dost thou pursue after a dead dog after a flea 15 The LORD therefore be Judge and judge between me and thee and see and plead my cause and † Heb. judge deliver me out of thine hand 16 ¶ And it came to pass when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul that Saul said Is this thy voice my son David And Saul lift up his voice and wept 17 And he said to David Thou art more righteous then I for thou hast rewarded me good whereas I have rewarded thee evil 18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me forasmuch as when the LORD had † Heb. shut up delivered me into thine hand thou killedst me not 19 For if a man finde his enemy will he let him go well away wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day 20 And now behold I know well that thou shalt surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine

XX. 1 Rabbah is besieged by Joah spoiled by David and the people thereof tortured 4 Three giants are slain in three several overthrows of the Philistines ANd * 2 Sam. 11.1 it came to pass that † Heb. at the return of the year after the year was expired at the time that kings go out to battel Joab led forth the power of the army and wasted the countrey of the children of Ammon and came and besieged Rabbah but David tarried at Jerusalem and Joab smote Rabbah and destroyed it 2 And David * 2 Sam. 12.20 took the crown of their king from off his head and found it † Heb. the weight of to weigh a talent of gold and there were precious stones in it and it was set upon Davids head and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city 3 And he brought out the people that were in it and cut them with saws and with harrows of iron and with axes even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem 4 ¶ And it came to pass after this * 2 Sam. 21.18 that there ‖ Or continued † Heb. stood arose war at ‖ Or Gob. XXI 1 David tempted by Satan forceth Joab to number the people 5 The number of the people being brought David repenteth of it 9 David having three plagues propounded by Gad chooseth the pestilence 14 After the death of sevent● thousand David by repentance preventeth the destruction of Jerusalem 18 David by Gads direction purchaseth Ornans thresh●ng-floor where having built an altar God giveth a signe of his favour by fir● and sta●eth the plague 28 David sacrificeth there 〈◊〉 restrained from Gibeon by fear of the angel ANd * 2 Sam. 14.1 c. Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people Go number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan and bring the number of them to me that I may know it 3 And Joab answered The LORD make his people an hundred times so many mo as they be but my lord the king are they not all my lords servants why then doth my lord require this thing why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel 4 Nevertheless the kings word prevailed against Joab wherefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem 5 ¶ And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword 6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them for the kings word was abominable to Joab 7 † Heb. And it was evil in the eyes of the LORD concerning this thing And God was displeased with this thing therefore he smote Israel 8 And David said unto God * 2 Sam. 24.10 I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing but now I beseech thee do away the iniquity of thy servant for I have done very foolishly 9 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Gad Davids seer saying 10 Go and tell David saying Thus saith the LORD I † Heb. streech out offer thee three things choose thee one of them that I may do it unto thee 11 So Gad came to David and said unto him Thus saith the LORD † Heb. take to thee Choose thee 12 Either three years famine or three moneths to be destroyed before thy foes while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee or else three days the sword of the LORD even the pestilence in the land and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel now therefore advise thy self what word I shall bring again to him that sent me 13 And David said unto Gad I am in a great strait let me fall now into the hand of the LORD for very ‖ Or ●any great are his mercies but let me not fall into the hand of man 14 ¶ So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men 15 And God sent an * 2 Sam. 24.16 angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it and as he was destroying the LORD beheld and he repented him of the evil and said to the angel that destroyed It is enough stay now thine hand And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing-floor of ‖ Or A●aunah 1 Sam. 24.18 Ornan the Jebusite 16 And David lift up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem then David and the elders of Israel who were clothed in sackcloth fell upon their faces 17 And David said unto God Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbred even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed but as for these sheep what have they done let thine hand I pray thee O LORD my God be on me and on my fathers house but not on thy people that they should be plagued 18 ¶ Then the * ●● Chr. ● ● angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and set up an alter unto the LORD in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite 19 And David went up at the saying of God which he spake in the name of the LORD 20 ‖ Or who Ornan turned back and saw the angel the 〈◊〉 he and his four sons with him ●id themselves And Ornan turned back and saw the angel and his four sons with him hid themselves Now Ornan was threshing wheat 21 And as David name to Ornan Ornan looked and saw David and went out of the threshing-floor and bowed
Solomon his father while he yet lived saying What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people 7 And they spake unto him saying If thou be kinde to this people and please them and speak good words to them they will be thy servants for ever 8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him that stood before him 9 And he said unto them What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people which have spoken to me saying Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us 10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him saying Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee saying Thy father made our yoke heavy but make thou it somewhat lighter for us thus shalt thou say unto them My little finger shall be thicker then my fathers loyns 11 For whereas my father † Heb. l●ded put a heavy yoke upon you I will put more to your yoke my father chastised you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king bade saying Come again to me on the third day 13 And the king answered them roughly and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men 14 And answered them after the advice of the young men saying My father made your yoke heavy but I will add thereto my father chastised you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions 15 So the king hearkned not unto the people for the cause was of God that the LORD might perform his word which he spake by the * 1 King 11.29 hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat 16 ¶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them the people answered the king saying What portion have we in David and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse every man to your tents O Israel and now David see to thine own house So all Israel went to their tents 17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah Rehoboam reigned over them 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute and the children of Israel stoned him with stones that he died but king Rehoboam † Heb. strengthne● himself made speed to get him up to his chariot to flee to Jerusalem 19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day CHAP. XI 1 Rehoboam raising an army to subdue Israel is forbidden by Shemaiah 5 He strengthneth his kingdom with forts and provision 13 The priests and Levites and such as feared God forsaken by Jeroboam strengthen the kingdom of Judah 18 The wives and children of Rehoboam ANd * 1 King 12.21 c. when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men which were warriours to fight against Israel that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam 2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God saying 3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin saying 4 Thus saith the LORD Ye shall not go up nor fight against your brethren return every man to his house for this thing is done of me And they obeyed the words of the LORD and returned from going against Jeroboam 5 ¶ And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built cities for defence in Judah 6 He built even Beth-lehem and Etam and Tekoa 7 And Beth-zur and Shoco and Adullam 8 And Gath and Mareshah and Ziph 9 And Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah 10 And Zorah and Aijalon and Hebron which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities 11 And he fortified the strong holds and put captains in them and store of victual and of oyl and wine 12 And in every several city be put shields and spears and made them exceeding strong having Judah and Benjamin on his side 13 ¶ And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel † Heb. presented themselves to him resorted to him out of all their coasts 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession came to Judah and Jerusalem for * Chap. 13.9 Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priests office unto the LORD 15 And he ordained him priests for the high places and for the devils and for the calves which he had made 16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers 17 So they strengthned the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong three years for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon 18 ¶ And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse 19 Which bare him children Jeush and Shamariah and Zaham 20 And after her he took * 1 King 15.2 Maachah the daughter of Absalom which bare him Abijah and Attai and Ziza and Shelomith 21 And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines for he took eighteen wives and threescore concubines and begat twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters 22 And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief to be ruler among his brethren for he thought to make him king 23 And he dealt wisely and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countreys of Judah and Benjamin unto every fenced city and he gave them victual in abundance and he desired † Heb. a multitude of wives many wives CHAP. XII 1 Rehoboam forsaking the Lord is punished by Shishak 5 He and the princes repenting at the preaching of Shemaiah are delivered from destruction but not from spoil 13 The reign and death of Rehoboam ANd it came to pass when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthned himself he forsook the law of the LORD and all Israel with him 2 And it came to pass that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem * 1 Kin. 14.14 21. because they had transgressed against the LORD 3 With twelve hundred chariots and threescore thousand hors-men and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt the Lubims the Sukkiims and the Ethiopians 4 And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah and came to Jerusalem 5 ¶ Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak and said unto them Thus saith the LORD Ye have forsaken me and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak 6
had brought their counsel to nought that we returned all of us to the wall every one unto his work 16 And it came to pass from that time forth that the half of my servants wrought in the work and the other hall of them held both the spears the shields and the bowes and the habergeons and the rulers were behinde all the house of Judah 17 They which builded on the wall and they that bare burdens with those that laded every one with one of his hands wrought in the work and with the other hand held a weapon 18 For the builders every one had his sword girded † Heb. on t●● loyns by his side and so builded and he that sounded the trumpet was by me 19 ¶ And I said unto the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people The work is great and large and we are separated upon the wall one far from another 20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet resort ye thither unto us our God shall sight for us 21 So we laboured in the work and half of them held the spears from the ri●ing of the morning till the stars appeared 22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem that in the night they may be a guard to us and labour on the day 23 So neither I nor my brethren nor my servants nor the men of the guard which followed me none of us put off our clothes ‖ Or every one went with his weapon for water saving that every one put them off for washing CHAP. V. 1 The Jews complain of their debt morgage and bondage 6 Nehemiah rebuketh the usurer● and causeth them to make a covenant of restitution 14 He forbeareth his own allowance and keepeth hospitality ANd there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews 2 For there were that said We our sons and our daughters are many therefore we take up corn for them that we may eat and live 3 Some also there were that said We have morgaged our lands vineyards and houses that we might buy corn because of the dearth 4 There were also that said We have borrowed money for the kings tribute and that upon our lands and vineyards 5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren our children as their children and so we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already neither is it in our power to redeem them for other men have our lands and vineyards 6 ¶ And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words 7 Then † Heb. my heart consulted in me I consulted with my self and I rebuked the nobles and the rulers and said unto them You exact usury every one of his brother And I set a great assembly against them 8 And I said unto them We after our ability have * Levit. 23.48 redeemed our brethren the Jews which were sold unto the heathen and will you even sell your brethren or shall they be sold unto us Then held they their peace and found nothing to answer 9 Also I said It is not good that ye do ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies 10 I likewise and my brethren and my servants might exact of them money and corn I pray you let us leave off this usury 11 Restore I pray you to them even this day their lands their vineyards their olive-yards and their houses also the hundredth part of the money and of the corn the wine and the oyl that ye exact of them 12 Then said they We will restore them and will require nothing of them so will we do as thou sayest Then I ●alled the priests and took an oath of them that they should do according to this promise 13 Also I sheok my lap and said So God shake out every man from his house and from his labour that performeth not this promise even thus be he shaken out and † Heb. empty or void emptied And all the congregation said Amen and praised the LORD And the people did according to this promise 14 ¶ Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governour in the land of Judah from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king that is twelve years I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governour 15 But the former governours that had been before me were chargeable unto the people and had taken of them bread and wine beside fourty shekels of silver yea even their servants bare rule over the people but so did not I because of the fear of God 16 Yea also I continued in the work of this wall neither bought we any land and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work 17 Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers besides those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us 18 Now that which was prepared for me daily was one or and six choice sheep also fowls were prepared for me and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine yet for all this required not I the bread of the governour because the bondage was heavy upon this people 19 * Chap. 13.22 Think upon me my God for good according to all that I have done for this people CHAP. VI. 1 Sanballat practiseth by craft by rumour by hired prophesies to terrifie Nehemiah 15 The work is finished to the terrour of the enemies 17 Secret intelligence ●asseth ●etween the enemies and the nobles of Judab NOw it came to pass when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arabian and the rest of our enemies heard that I had bui●led the wall and that there was no breach left therein though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates 2 That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me saying Come let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono but they thought to do me mischief 3 And I sent messengers unto them saying I am doing a great work so that I cannot come down why should the work cease whilest I leave it and come down to you 4 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort and I answered them after the same manner 5 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand 6 Wherein was written It is reported among the heathen and ‖ Or Geshem vers 2 Gashmu saith it that thou and the Jews think to rebel for which cause thou buildest the wall that thou mayest be their king according to these words 7 And thou haft also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem saying

VIII 1 Bildad sheweth Gods justice in dealing with men according to their works 8 He alledgeth antiquity to prove the certain destruction of the hypocrite 20 He applieth Gods just dealing to Job THen answered Bildad the Shuhite and said 2 How long wilt thou speak these things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind 3 * Deu. 32.4 2 Chr. 19.7 Dan. 9.14 Doth God pervert judgement or doth the Almight pervert justice 4 If thy children have sinned against him and he have cast them away † Heb. in the hand of their transgression for their transgression 5 * Chap. 22 23. XXIII 1 Job lonzeth to appear before God 6 in confidence of his mercy 8 God who is invisible observeth our ways 11 Jobs innocency 13 Gods decree is immutable THen ●ob answered and said 2 Even to day is my complaint bitter † Heb. my hand my stroke is heavier then my groaning 3 O that I knew where I might finde him that I might come even to his seat 4 I would order my cause before him and fill my mouth with arguments 5 I would know the words which he would answer me and understand what he would say unto me 6 Will he plead against me with his great power No but he would put strength in me 7 There the righteous might dispute with him so should I be delivered for ever from my judge 8 Behold I go forward but he is not there and backward but I cannot perceive him 9 On the left hand where he doth work but I cannot behold him he hideth himself on the right hand that I cannot see him 10 But he knoweth † Heb. the way that is with me the way that I take when he hath tried me I shall come forth as gold 11 My foot hath held his steps his way have I kept and not declined 12 Neither have I gone back from the
servant O LORD according unto thy word 66 Teach me good judgement and knowledge for I have beleeved thy commandments 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray but now have I kept thy word 68 Thou art good and doest good teach me thy statutes 69 The proud have forged a he against me but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart 70 Their heart is as fat as grease but I delight in thy law 71 It is 82 Mine eyes fail for thy word saying When wilt thou comfort me 83 For I am become like a bottle in the smoke yet do I not forget thy statutes 84 How many are the days of thy servant when wilt thou execute judgement on them that persecute me 85 The proud have digged pits for me which are not after thy law 86 All thy commandments are † Heb. faithfulness faithful they persecute me wrongfully help thou me 87 They had almost consumed me upon earth but I forsook not thy precepts 88 Quicken me after thy loving kindness so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth LAMED 89 For ever O LORD thy word is settled in heaven 90 Thy faithfulness is † Heb. to generation and generation unto all generations thou hast established the earth and it † Heb. standeth abideth 91 They continue this day according to thine ordinances for all are thy servants 92 Unless thy law had been my delights I should then have perished in mine affliction 93 I will never forget thy precepts for with them thou hast quickned me of thy judgements AIN 121 I have done judgement and justice leave me not to mine oppressours 122 Be surety for thy servant for good let not the proud oppress me 123 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation and for the word of thy righteousness 124 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy and teach me thy statutes 125 I am thy servant give me understanding that I may know thy testimonies 126 It is CXXI 1 The great safety of the godly who put their trust in Gods protection ¶ A song of degrees ‖ Or Shall I lift up mine eyes to the bills whence should my holy come I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help 2 * Ps 124.8 My help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth 3 He will not suffer thy ●out to be moved he that keepeth thee will not slumber 4 Behold he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep 5 The LORD is thy keeper the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day nor the moon by night 7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil he shall preserve thy soul 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth and even for evermore PSAL. CXXII 1 David professeth his joy for the church 6 and prayeth for the peace thereof ¶ A song of degrees of David I Was glad when they said unto me Let us go into the house of the LORD 2 Our feet shall stand within thy gates O Jerusalem 3 Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together 4 Whither the tribes go up the tribes of the LORD unto the testimony of Israel to give thanks unto the name of the LORD 5 For there † Heb. 〈◊〉 sit are set thrones of judgement the thrones of the house of David 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem they shall prosper that love thee 7 Peace be within thy walls and prosperity within thy palaces 8 For my brethren and companions sakes I will now say Peace be within thee 9 Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good PSAL. CXXIII 1 The godly profess their confidence in God 3 and pray to be delivered from contempt ¶ A song of degrees UNto thee lift I up mine eyes O thou that dwellest in the heavens 2 Behold as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God until that he have mercy upon us 3 Have mercy upon us O LORD have mercy upon us for we are exceedingly filled with contempt 4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease and with the contempt of the proud PSAL. have peace 13 * Levit. 26.16 Deut. 28.38 Micah 6.15 Hag. 1.6 They have sown wheat but shall reap thorns they have put themselves to pain but shall not profit and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD 14 ¶ Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit Behold I will * Deut. 30.2 Chap. 32.37 pluck them out of their land and pluck out the house of Judah from among them 15 And it shall come to pass after that I have plucked them out I will return and have compassion on them and will bring them again every man to his heritage and every man to his land 16 And it shall come to pass if they will diligently learn the ways of my people to swear by my name The LORD liveth as they taught my people to swear by my Baal then shall they be built in the midst of my people 17 But if they will not * Isa 60 12. obey I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation saith the LORD CHAP. XIII 1 In the ●●pe of a line● girdle kidden at Euphrates God prefigureth the destruction of his people 12Vnder the parable of the bottles filled with wine he foretelleth their drunkenness in misery 15 He exhorteth to prevent their future judgements 22 He sheweth their abominations are the cause thereof THus saith the LORD unto me Go and get thee a linen girdle and put it upon thy loyns and put it not in water 2 So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD and put it on my loyns 3 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time saying 4 Take the girdle that thou hast got which is upon thy loyns and arise go to Euphrates and hide it there in a hole of the rock 5 So I went and hid it by Euphrates as the LORD commanded me 6 And it came to pass after many days that the LORD said unto me Arise go to Euphrates and take the girdle from thence which I commanded thee to hide there 7 Then I went to Euphrates and digged and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it and behold the girdle was marred it was profitable for nothing 8 Then the word of the LORD came unto me saying 9 Thus saith the LORD After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem 10 This evil people which refuse to hear my words which walk in the ‖ Or stubb ●nness imagination of their heart and walk after other gods to serve them and to worship them shall even be as this girdle which is good for nothing 11 For as the girdle cleaveth to the loyns of a man so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah saith the LORD that they might be unto me for a people for a name and for a praise for a glory but they would not hear 12 ¶ Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Every bottle shall be filled with wine and they shall say unto thee Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine 13 Then shalt thou say unto them Thus saith the LORD Behold I will fill all the inhabitants of this land even the kings that sit upon Davids throne and the priests and the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with drunkenness 14 And I will dash them † Heb. a man against his brother one against another even the fathers and the sons together saith the LORD I will not pity nor spare not have mercy † Heb. from destroying them but destroy them 15 ¶ Hear ye and give ear be not proud for the LORD hath spoken 16 Give glory to the LORD your God before he cause * If. 8.22 darkness and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains and while ye look for light he turn it into the shadow of death and make it gross darkness 17 But if ye will not hear it my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride and * La. 1.2 16 and 2.18 mine eye shall weep sore and run down with tears because the LORDs flock is carried away captive 18 Say unto the king and to the queen Humble your selves sit down for your ‖ Or head-tires principalities shall come down even the crown of your glory 19 The cities of the south shall be shut up and none shall open them Judah shall be carried away captive all of it it shall be wholly carried away captive 20 Lift up your eyes and behold them that come from the north where is the flock that was given thee thy beautiful flock 21 What wilt thou say when he shall † Heb. visit upon punish thee for thou hast taught them to be captains and as chief over thee shall not sorrows take thee as a woman in travail 22 ¶ And it thou say in thine heart * Ch 5.19 and 16.10 Wherefore come these things upon me for the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered and thy heels ‖ Or shall be violently taken away made bare 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots then may ye also do good that are † Heb. caught accustomed to do evil 24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness 25 This is thy lot the portion of thy measures from me saith the LORD because thou hast forgotten me and trusted in falshood 26 Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face that thy shame may appear 27 I have seen thine adulteries and thy neighings the lewdness of thy whoredom and thine abominations on the hills in the fields wo unto thee O Jerusalem wilt thou not be made clean † Heb. after when ●et when shall it once be CHAP. XIV 1 The grievous famine 7 causeth Jeremiah to pray 10 The Lord will not be intreated for the people 13 Lying prophets are no excuse for them 17 Jeremiah is moved to complain for them THe word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning † Heb. the words of the dearths or restraints the dearth 2 Judah mourneth and the gates thereof languish they are black unto the ground and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up 3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters they came to the pits and found no water they returned with their vessels empty they were ashamed and confounded and covered their heads 4 Because the ground is chapt for there was no rain in the earth the plowmen were ashamed they covered their heads 5 Yea the hind also calved in the field and forsook it because there was no grass 6 And the wilde asses did stand in the high places they snuffed up the wind
Jerusalem and which see visions of peace for her and there is no peace saith the Lord GOD. 17 ¶ Likewise thou son of man set thy face against the daughters of thy people which prophesie out of their own heart and prophesie thou against them 18 And say Thus saith the Lord GOD Wo to the women that sew pillows to all ‖ Or ●hows arm-holes and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls Will ye hunt the souls of my people and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you 19 And will ye pollute me among my people handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread to slay the souls that should not die and to save the souls a live that should not live by your lying to my people that hear your lies 20 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I am against your pillows wherewith ye there hunt the souls ‖ Or into gardens to make them flie and I will tear them from your arms and will let the souls go even the souls that ye hunt to make them flie 21 Your kerchiefs also will I tear and deliver my people out of your hand and they shall be no more in your hand to be hunted and ye shall know that I am the LORD 22 Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad whom I have not made sad and strengthned the hands of the wicked that he should not return from his wicked way ‖ Or that I shall save ●●life † Heb. by quick●ing him by promising him life 23 Therefore ye shall see no more vanity nor divine divinations for I will deliver my people out of your hand and ye shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XIV 1 God answereth idolaters according to their own hearth They are exhorted to repent for fear of judgements by means of seduced prophets 12 Gods irre●ocable sentence of famine 15 of notsom beasts 17 of the sword 19 and of pestilence 22 A remnant shall be reserved for example of others THen came certain of the elders of Israel unto me sat before me 2 And the word of the LORD came unto me saying 3 Son of man these men have set up their idols in their heart and put the stumbling-block of their iniquity before their face should I be enquired of at all by them 4 Therefore speak unto them and say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart and putteth the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face and cometh to the prophet I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols 5 That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart because they are all estranged from me through their idols 6 ¶ Therefore say unto the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD Repent and turn ‖ Or others your selves from your idols and turn away your faces from all your abominations 7 For every one of the house of Israel or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel which separateth himself from me and setteth up his idols in his heart and putteth the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me I the LORD will answer him by my self 8 And I will set my face against that man and will make him a * Deu 28.27 Ch. 5.15 signe and a proverb and I will cut him off from the midst of my people and ye shall know that I am the LORD 9 And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing I the LORD * 1 Kin. 22.23 have deceived that prophet and I will stretch out my hand upon him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel 10 And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him 11 That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me neither be polluted any more with all their transgressions but that they may be my people and I may be their God saith the Lord GOD. 12 ¶ The word of the LORD came again to me saying 13 Son of man when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously then will I stretch out mine hand upon it and will break the * Le. 25 2● Ch. 4 1● 5.16 staff of the bread thereof and will send famine upon it and will cut off man and beast from it 14 * Jer. 15.1 Though these three men Noah Daniel and Job were in it they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness saith the Lord GOD. 15 ¶ It I cause noisom beasts to pass through the land and they ‖ Or here w●● spoil it so that it be desolate that no man may Pass through because of the beasts 16 Though these three men were † Heb. in the midst of it in it as I live saith the Lord GOD they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters they onely shall be delivered but the land shall be desolate 17 ¶ Or if I bring a sword upon that land and say Sword go through the land so that I cut off man and beast from it 18 Though these three men were in it as I live saith the Lord GOD they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters but they onely shall be delivered themselves 19 ¶ Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my fury upon it in bloud to cut off from it man and beast 20 Though Noah Daniel and Job were in it as I live faith the Lord GOD they shall deliver neither son not daughter they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness 21 For thus saith the Lord GOD ‖ Or Also ●●be● How much more when I send my four sore judgements upon Jerusalem the sword and the famine and the noisom beast and the pestilence to cut off from it man and beast 22 ¶ Yet behold therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth both sons and daughters behold they shall come forth unto you and ye shall see their way and their doings and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem even concerning all that I have brought upon it 23 And they shall comfort you when ye see their ways and their doings and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XV. 3 By the unfitness of the vine-branch for any work 6 is shewed the rejection of Jerusalem ANd the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man what is the vine-tree more then any tree or then a branch which is among the trees of the forest 3 Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon 4
in an ephah the final damnation of Babylon THen I turned and lift up mine eyes and looked and behold a flying roll 2 And he said unto me What seest thou And I answered I see a flying roll the length thereof is twenty cubits and the breadth thereof ten cubits 3 Then said he unto me This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth for ‖ Or every one of this people that stealeth holdeth himself ●uiltless as it doth every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it 4 I will bring it forth saith the LORD of hosts and it shall enter into the house of the thief and into the house of him that sweareth falsly by my name and it shall remain in the midst of his house and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof 5 ¶ Then the angel that talked with me went forth and said unto me Lift up now thine eyes and see what is this that goeth forth 6 And I said What is it And he said This is an ephah that goeth 7 And behold there was lift up a ‖ Or weighty piece talent of lead and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah 8 And he said This is wickedness and he cast it into the midst of the ephah and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof 9 Then lift I up mine eyes and looked and behold there came out two women and the wind was in their wings for they had wings like the wings of a stork and they lift up the ephah between the earth and the heaven 10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me Whither do these bear the ephah 11 And he said unto me To build it an house in the land of Shinar and it shall be established and set there upon her own base CHAP. VI. 1 The vision of the four chariots 9 By the crowns of Joshua is shewed the temple and kingdom of Christ the Branch ANd I turned and lift up mine eyes and looked and behold there came four chariots out from between two mountains and the mountains were mountains of brass 2 In the first chariot were red horses and in the second chariot black horses 3 And in the third chariot white horses and in the fourth chariot grisled and ‖ Or strong bay horses 4 Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me What are these my lord 5 And the angel answered and said unto me These are the four ‖ Or winde● spirits of the heavens which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth 6 The black horses which are therein go forth into the north-countrey and the white go forth after them and the grisled go forth toward the south-countrey 7 And the bay went forth and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth and he said Get ye hence walk to and fro through the earth So they walked to and fro through the earth 8 Then cried he upon me and spake unto me saying Behold these that go toward the north-countrey have quieted my spirit in the north-countrey 9 ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto me saying 10 Take of them of the captivity even of Heldai of Tobijah and of Jedaiah which are come from Babylon and come thou the same day and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah 11 Then take silver and gold and make crowns and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech the high priest 12 And speak unto him saying Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts saying Behold the man whose name is the * Ch. 3.8 BRANCH and he shall ‖ Or branch up from under him grow up out of his place and he shall built the temple of the LORD 13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD and he shall bear the glory and shall sit and rule upon his throne and he shall be a priest upon his throne and the counsel of peace shall be between them both 14 And the crowns shall be to Helem and to Tobijah and to Jedaiah and to Hen the son of Zephaniah for a memorial in the temple of the LORD 15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the LORD and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you And this shall come to pass if ye will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God CHAP. VII 1 The captives enquire of fasting 4 Zechariah reproveth their fasting 8 Sin the cause of their captivity ANd it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius that the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth moneth even in Chisleu 2 When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regem-melech and their men † Heb. to intreat the face of the LORD to pray before the LORD 3 And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of hosts and to the prophets saying Should I weep in the fifth moneth separating my self as I have done these so many years 4 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me saying 5 Speak unto all the people of the land and to the priests saying When ye * Is 58.5 fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh moneth even those seventy years did ye at all fast unto me even to me 6 And when ye did eat and when ye did drink ‖ Or be not ye they that c. did not ye eat for your selves and drink for your selves 7 ‖ Or. the glory of God 8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God to confirm the promises made unto the fathers 9 And that the Gentiles might glorifie God for his mercy as it is written * Psal 18.49 For this cause I will confess to thee among thee Gentiles and sing unto thy name 10 And again he saith * Deut. 32.43 Rejoyceye Gentiles with his people 11 And again * Psal 117.1 Praise the Lord all ye Gentiles and laud him all ye people 12 And again Esaias saith * Isa 11.10 There shall be a root of Jesse and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles in him shall the Gentiles trust 13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in beleeving that ye may abound in hope through the power of the holy Ghost 14 And I my self also am perswaded of you my brethren that ye also are full of goodness filled with all knowledge able also to admonish one another 15 Nevertheless brethren I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort as putting you in minde because of the grace that is given to me of God 16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles ministring the gospel of God that the ‖ Or s●●rificing offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable being sanctified by the holy Ghost 17 I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God 18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed 19 Through mighty signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God so that from Jerusalem and round about unto Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ 20 Yea so have I strived to preach the gospel not where Christ was named left I should build upon another mans foundation 21 But as it is written * Isa 52.15 To whom he was not spoken of they shall see and they that have not heard shall understand 22 For which cause also I have been ‖ Or many ways or oftentimes much hindred from coming to you 23 But now having no more place in these parts and having a great desire these many years to come unto you 24 Whensoever I take my journey into Spain I will come to you for I trust to see you in my journey and to be brought on my way thitherward by you if first I be somewhat filled † Gr. with you vers 32. with your company 25 But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints 26 For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem 27 It hath pleased them verily and their debters they are For * 1 Cor. 9.11 if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things 28 When therefore I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit I will come by you into Spain 29 And I am sure that when I come unto you I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ 30 Now I beseech you brethren for the Lord Jesus Christ sake and for the love of the Spirit that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me 31 That I may be delivered from them that ‖ Or are disobedient do not beleeve in Judea and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints 32 That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God and may with you be refreshed 33 Now the God of peace be with you all Amen CHAP.
