concern_v grace_n and_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n now_o if_o with_o faith_n you_o compare_v charity_n who_o office_n be_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o relieve_v the_o misery_n and_o calamity_n of_o man_n whether_o they_o have_v need_n of_o comfort_n or_o succour_v in_o mind_n or_o in_o body_n who_o see_v not_o how_o far_o faith_n excel_v charity_n for_o how_o great_a a_o difference_n be_v there_o between_o god_n &_o man_n between_o corporal_a necessity_n &_o eternal_a death_n these_o be_v therefore_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n even_o in_o the_o great_a danger_n to_o fight_v ready_a to_o despair_v against_o this_o tentation_n david_n arm_v we_o and_o warn_v we_o to_o be_v mindful_a that_o we_o must_v wait_v on_o the_o lord_n and_o never_o depart_v from_o the_o word_n or_o believe_v any_o thing_n against_o the_o word_n and_o he_o show_v the_o cause_n why_o for_o with_o the_o lord_n say_v he_o be_v mercy_n he_o the_o flesh_n in_o tentation_n and_o affliction_n think_v that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v nothing_o but_o wrath_n the_o holy_a ghost_n therefore_o comfort_v we_o and_o go_v about_o to_o pluck_v this_o opinion_n out_o of_o our_o heart_n &_o pronounce_v that_o there_o be_v mercy_n and_o goodness_n with_o the_o lord_n if_o we_o can_v but_o only_o wait_v on_o the_o lord_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o he_o this_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n we_o have_v great_a need_n of_o for_o if_o we_o follow_v our_o own_o sense_n we_o shall_v be_v deceive_v and_o find_v in_o ourselves_o the_o contrary_n but_o we_o may_v not_o judge_v of_o these_o matter_n according_a to_o our_o own_o sense_n or_o as_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o but_o we_o must_v stand_v to_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o think_v with_o ourselves_o that_o these_o be_v matter_n of_o faith_n and_o not_o of_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n for_o to_o believe_v be_v not_o to_o feel_v not_o because_o these_o thing_n shall_v never_o be_v feel_v which_o we_o now_o believe_v but_o because_o faith_n must_v go_v before_o feeling_n and_o experience_n and_o we_o must_v believe_v the_o word_n although_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o judgement_n never_o so_o much_o to_o the_o contrary_n as_o when_o our_o heart_n oppress_v with_o calamity_n do_v think_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o we_o not_o to_o care_v for_o we_o but_o to_o hate_v we_o then_o faith_n clean_a contrary_n must_v thus_o assure_v itself_o that_o with_o god_n there_o be_v neither_o anger_n nor_o hatred_n that_o he_o neither_o think_v of_o punishment_n nor_o offence_n but_o although_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v afflict_v yet_o he_o do_v it_o not_o to_o the_o end_n to_o destroy_v we_o for_o with_o he_o say_v the_o psalm_n be_v mercy_n with_o faith_n join_v hope_v also_o so_o that_o albeit_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o heart_n shall_v work_v never_o so_o much_o against_o we_o and_o that_o god_n shall_v seem_v never_o so_o sharp_a a_o enemy_n in_o punish_v we_o yet_o let_v we_o not_o yield_v so_o much_o to_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n as_o to_o the_o write_a word_n and_o to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o pronounce_v that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v mercy_n who_o love_v we_o &_o seek_v to_o do_v we_o good_a this_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o we_o shall_v think_v yea_o most_o assure_o believe_v 5.3_o that_o with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v no_o anger_n but_o if_o any_o calamity_n
this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o those_o that_o be_v infect_v with_o this_o poison_n the_o comtempt_n of_o the_o word_n i_o mean_v and_o the_o child_n of_o god_n that_o as_o they_o be_v whole_o bend_v to_o seek_v and_o advance_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o everliving_a god_n so_o be_v these_o either_o inflame_a with_o a_o devilish_a desire_n to_o maintain_v &_o set_v forth_o damnable_a doctrine_n wicked_a opinion_n and_o false_a worship_n be_v whole_o give_v over_o to_o serve_v the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n and_o their_o god_n mammon_n seek_v with_o greediness_n and_o pleasure_n their_o own_o perdition_n &_o damnation_n and_o so_o albeit_o they_o be_v already_o whole_o possess_v in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o devil_n yet_o be_v they_o merry_a and_o joyful_a but_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v such_o as_o for_o their_o horrible_a example_n be_v set_v forth_o in_o the_o story_n of_o the_o sodomite_n let_v we_o pray_v unto_o god_n therefore_o that_o he_o will_v preserve_v we_o be_v a_o false_a definition_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o the_o papist_n make_v that_o it_o be_v a_o house_n build_v with_o stone_n &_o timber_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n what_o this_o temple_n be_v they_o themselves_o know_v not_o for_o the_o temple_n of_o solomon_n be_v not_o therefore_o beautiful_a because_o it_o be_v adorn_v with_o gold_n and_o silver_n and_o other_o precious_a ornament_n but_o the_o true_a beauty_n of_o that_o temple_n be_v because_o in_o that_o place_n the_o people_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n call_v upon_o his_o name_n find_v he_o merciful_a give_v peace_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n etc_n etc_n this_o be_v right_o to_o behold_v the_o temple_n and_o not_o as_o the_o visured_a bishop_n behold_v their_o idolatrous_a temple_n when_o they_o consecrate_v it_o these_o be_v then_o great_a cause_n of_o joy_n and_o gladness_n to_o have_v access_n unto_o the_o lord_n to_o hear_v this_o consolation_n that_o he_o be_v our_o god_n which_o will_v idolatry_n all_o this_o he_o can_v abide_v well_o enough_o for_o by_o these_o thing_n he_o know_v that_o his_o strength_n be_v not_o diminish_v nor_o his_o power_n weaken_v but_o when_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v concern_v remission_n of_o sin_n the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o christ_n and_o life_n everlasting_a this_o doctrine_n destroy_v his_o kingdom_n this_o cause_v he_o to_o rage_n and_o to_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_v possible_a how_o he_o may_v hinder_v the_o course_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v to_o praise_v the_o fruit_n which_o follow_v thereof_o which_o be_v thank_n give_v and_o if_o he_o have_v name_v the_o sley_a of_o sacrifice_n every_o man_n have_v not_o be_v able_a to_o serve_v god_n with_o that_o kind_n of_o worship_n therefore_o he_o require_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o which_o they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v without_o great_a charge_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o very_o few_o do_v he_o do_v not_o condemn_v the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o afterward_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o his_o son_n solomon_n but_o do_v earnest_o desire_v the_o same_o and_o the_o cause_n why_o he_o do_v desire_v it_o here_o you_o see_v namely_o that_o first_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v there_o be_v preach_v and_o then_o that_o god_n may_v there_o accept_v the_o prayer_n of_o his_o people_n with_o all_o the_o world_n as_o we_o see_v be_v full_a &_o even_o glut_v with_o the_o benefit_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o it_o remain_v still_o in_o such_o blindness_n that_o it_o know_v they_o not_o to_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o take_v and_o use_v they_o not_o otherwise_o then_o hog_n do_v their_o draff_n &_o swill_n but_o david_n see_v that_o god_n have_v give_v he_o a_o old_a man_n thou_o eat_v the_o bread_n of_o sorrow_n but_o thy_o heart_n be_v quiet_a and_o at_o rest_n in_o hope_n of_o succour_n and_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o lord_n these_o thing_n we_o daily_o teach_v and_o yet_o be_v the_o covetousness_n of_o man_n so_o great_a that_o there_o be_v no_o end_n of_o heap_v up_o riches_n by_o hook_n or_o crook_n by_o right_a or_o wrong_n yea_o they_o will_v rather_o omit_v the_o service_n of_o god_n the_o hear_n and_o preach_v of_o his_o word_n than_o any_o gainful_a labour_n they_o do_v not_o see_v that_o while_o they_o neglect_v the_o word_n and_o seek_v their_o own_o gain_n they_o procure_v unto_o themselves_o a_o far_o great_a loss_n which_o although_o they_o do_v not_o present_o feel_v yet_o shall_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o their_o riches_n which_o with_o so_o great_a labour_n they_o heap_v together_o by_o god_n just_a judgement_n shall_v perish_v either_o by_o thief_n by_o war_n by_o fire_n or_o otherwise_o or_o else_o they_o shall_v never_o come_v to_o the_o heir_n who_o they_o do_v appoint_v but_o in_o popery_n this_o persuasion_n be_v deep_o root_v in_o man_n heart_n that_o if_o they_o have_v once_o hear_v a_o mass_n travel_n be_v it_o never_o so_o painful_a to_o enrich_v ourselves_o and_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n we_o neglect_v god_n and_o his_o word_n therefore_o will_v god_n heap_v upon_o we_o abundant_o both_o care_n and_o calamity_n end_v that_o most_o just_o for_o that_o it_o be_v which_o we_o so_o greedy_o seek_v but_o i_o return_v to_o the_o text_n in_o the_o which_o you_o see_v that_o household_n and_o civil_a government_n be_v whole_o commit_v unto_o we_o but_o yet_o so_o that_o we_o must_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v but_o god_n instrument_n and_o god_n workman_n not_o author_n or_o first_o cause_n of_o these_o divine_a matter_n therefore_o the_o prophet_n think_v it_o not_o enough_o to_o say_v affirmative_o god_n himself_o govern_v and_o make_v the_o city_n he_o build_v the_o house_n and_o appoint_v the_o family_n but_o he_o set_v down_o also_o the_o negative_a and_o say_v you_o do_v it_o not_o and_o this_o be_v the_o part_n of_o a_o good_a teacher_n but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v the_o world_n can_v not_o abide_v the_o negative_a for_o the_o world_n say_v this_o will_v i_o this_o have_v i_o do_v and_o this_o will_v i_o do_v it_o will_v needs_o be_v the_o governor_n of_o common_a wealth_n and_o rule_n in_o god_n steed_n wherefore_o it_o receive_v a_o just_a reward_n in_o that_o his_o enterprise_n be_v all_o in_o vain_a and_o his_o labour_n without_o success_n as_o the_o psalm_n say_v 77.33_o their_o day_n be_v consume_v in_o vanity_n that_o be_v to_o say_v they_o be_v dead_a before_o they_o can_v bring_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o take_v in_o hand_n for_o since_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o god_n govern_v all_o thing_n they_o see_v their_o own_o policy_n to_o be_v but_o vanity_n their_o labour_n unprofitable_a begin_v in_o paradise_n when_o satan_n say_v to_o eve_n you_o shall_v be_v like_a god_n &_o it_o always_o continue_v fast_o fix_v in_o this_o flesh_n so_o that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v suppress_v as_o potius_fw-la quam_fw-la jure_fw-la consultus_fw-la fuissem_fw-la oh_o say_v he_o that_o i_o have_v be_v a_o swineherd_n rather_o than_o a_o lawyer_n for_o he_o perceive_v that_o in_o that_o danger_n the_o administration_n of_o justice_n be_v it_o never_o so_o exact_a help_v nothing_o in_o like_a case_n when_o cicero_n see_v himself_o to_o be_v in_o danger_n through_o the_o power_n of_o augustus_n and_o antonius_n his_o adversary_n he_o perceive_v that_o there_o be_v no_o comfort_n nor_o succour_n to_o be_v find_v in_o all_o his_o great_a knowledge_n and_o learning_n but_o that_o all_o his_o learning_n and_o all_o that_o great_a study_n and_o knowledge_n of_o philosophy_n vanish_v away_o and_o avail_v he_o nothing_o the_o same_o happen_v likewise_o to_o demosthenes_n fly_v from_o antipater_n to_o conclude_v all_o such_o example_n do_v teach_v that_o to_o be_v most_o true_a which_o solomon_n say_v 17._o he_o that_o exalt_v his_o house_n seek_v destruction_n but_o this_o our_o right_o use_v their_o authority_n either_o in_o the_o church_n or_o in_o the_o common_a wealth_n the_o cause_n be_v for_o that_o the_o great_a part_n serve_v their_o own_o affection_n their_o own_o lust_n and_o pleasure_n and_o while_o they_o shall_v rule_v other_o they_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v rule_v and_o govern_v of_o satan_n hereof_o come_v it_o that_o we_o see_v the_o pope_n the_o bishop_n yea_o the_o whole_a papacy_n to_o have_v no_o care_n of_o the_o word_n nor_o love_n to_o the_o word_n at_o all_o but_o be_v whole_o give_v over_o to_o seek_v theor_n own_o glory_n dignity_n wealth_n and_o pleasure_n wherefore_o their_o authority_n bind_v not_o we_o although_o it_o be_v the_o authority_n of_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n but_o with_o good_a conscience_n we_o depart_v from_o they_o lest_o we_o shall_v be_v disobedient_a to_o the_o high_a authority_n and_o majesty_n which_o be_v god_n himself_o but_o if_o the_o pope_n with_o his_o prelate_n will_v not_o resist_v not_o teach_v man_n to_o make_v merchandise_n of_o their_o own_o merit_n and_o work_n we_o will_v glad_o acknowledge_v their_o authority_n but_o since_o they_o manifest_o impugn_v the_o word_n since_o they_o defend_v their_o impiety_n and_o abomination_n with_o extreme_a cruelty_n and_o tyranny_n we_o do_v not_o only_o reject_v and_o contemn_v their_o authority_n but_o we_o say_v as_o paul_n say_v that_o they_o be_v accurse_v it_o be_v a_o common_a principle_n amongst_o the_o popish_a doctor_n that_o the_o pope_n be_v above_o the_o word_n and_o the_o scripture_n and_o that_o in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n he_o may_v dispense_v as_o please_v he_o but_o god_n give_v no_o authority_n unto_o man_n above_o the_o word_n so_o shall_v he_o set_v man_n that_o be_v to_o say_v dust_n and_o dung_n above_o himself_o for_o what_o be_v the_o word_n but_o god_n himself_o this_o word_n they_o that_o honour_n obey_v and_o keep_v be_v the_o true_a church_n in_o deed_n be_v they_o never_o so_o contemptible_a in_o the_o world_n but_o they_o which_o do_v not_o be_v the_o church_n of_o satan_n and_o accurse_v of_o god._n word_n and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o it_o be_v express_o set_v down_o in_o the_o text_n the_o testimony_n which_o i_o will_v teach_v they_o for_o so_o will_v god_n use_v the_o ministry_n of_o teacher_n and_o pastor_n in_o the_o church_n that_o he_o notwithstanding_o will_v be_v the_o chief_a pastor_n and_o all_o other_o minister_n and_o pastor_n what_o so_o ever_o yea_o the_o church_n itself_o shall_v be_v rule_v and_o govern_v by_o the_o word_n amongst_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n the_o king_n and_o priest_n glory_v and_o vaunt_v of_o their_o vocation_n think_v they_o may_v do_v what_o they_o listen_v so_o the_o pope_n and_o his_o prelate_n at_o this_o day_n will_v not_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o authority_n and_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n &_o the_o scripture_n for_o the_o evil_a conscience_n which_o the_o pope_n have_v do_v always_o cry_v out_o and_o witness_n unto_o he_o that_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o will_v be_v against_o he_o &_o utter_o condemn_v he_o wherefore_o there_o be_v no_o prison_n which_o he_o more_o hate_v and_o abhor_v then_o the_o word_n of_o god._n presumptuous_a this_o conditional_a sentence_n be_v here_o set_v down_o because_o of_o the_o wicked_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o take_v upon_o they_o a_o absolute_a power_n contrary_a to_o the_o word_n for_o there_o be_v no_o absolute_a promise_n but_o that_o which_o pertain_v unto_o christ_n which_o say_v not_o with_o a_o certain_a condition_n but_o general_o and_o absolute_o that_o christ_n shall_v come_v of_o the_o seed_n of_o abraham_n now_o whereas_o the_o corporal_a the_o truth_n both_o which_o sort_n i_o have_v here_o in_o few_o word_n to_o exhort_v &_o to_o desire_v first_o such_o as_o have_v mind_n to_o hear_v &_o read_v the_o doctrine_n of_o truth_n that_o they_o in_o life_n will_v follow_v that_o they_o hear_v and_o read_v of_o the_o other_o company_n this_o i_o have_v to_o crave_v that_o for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o gracious_a goodness_n of_o the_o lord_n have_v raise_v up_o before_o their_o face_n such_o plenty_n of_o preacher_n teacher_n writer_n and_o translator_n whereby_o by_o all_o mean_n to_o call_v they_o and_o to_o do_v they_o good_a they_o wise_o again_o for_o their_o part_n will_v consider_v what_o they_o have_v to_o do_v that_o be_v to_o take_v the_o time_n before_o they_o &_o not_o to_o refuse_v the_o riches_n of_o god_n great_a grace_n offer_v lest_o peradventure_o hereafter_o ignorance_n will_v not_o excuse_v they_o whereas_o now_o the_o light_n of_o truth_n so_o evident_o appear_v witting_o and_o willing_o they_o stop_v their_o eye_n from_o see_v &_o their_o ear_n from_o hear_v the_o lord_n god_n of_o peace_n &_o father_n of_o all_o mercy_n &_o consolation_n for_o christ_n jesus_n his_o son_n sake_n open_v our_o heart_n and_o sense_n that_o all_o prejudice_n &_o pertinacy_n set_v aside_o we_o may_v both_o be_v willing_a to_o learn_v the_o right_a way_n of_o perfect_a faith_n and_o truth_n and_o no_o the_o worshippings_fw-mi and_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o therefore_o even_o when_o the_o la_o be_v yet_o in_o his_o full_a strength_n the_o holy_a prophet_n of_o god_n utter_o reject_v the_o burn_a offering_n and_o other_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o la_o do_v commend_v above_o all_o other_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o praise_n in_o like_a manner_n also_o ought_v we_o so_o much_o because_o of_o the_o continual_a vexation_n and_o assault_n of_o satan_n that_o as_o we_o be_v never_o without_o occasion_n of_o decline_a &_o fall_v from_o god_n so_o likewise_o we_o shall_v not_o cease_v to_o exercise_v ourselves_o in_o the_o continual_a meditation_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o the_o edify_a both_o of_o ourselves_o and_o of_o the_o church_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o so_o pernicious_a as_o the_o opinion_n of_o many_o at_o this_o day_n who_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o have_v get_v never_o so_o little_a knowledge_n of_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n think_v themselves_o by_o and_o by_o to_o be_v great_a doctor_n for_o see_v that_o these_o thing_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o fine_a and_o eloquent_a talk_n in_o reason_v and_o dispute_v but_o in_o practice_n and_o experience_n direct_v not_o by_o man_n reason_n but_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o be_v miserable_o deceive_v that_o rest_n in_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n which_o be_v but_o unprofitable_a without_o experience_n and_o practice_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n god_n appoint_v but_o only_o the_o ten_o commandment_n wherein_o he_o will_v have_v his_o people_n to_o be_v exercise_v and_o occupy_v but_o who_o be_v there_o ever_o among_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n which_o can_v say_v that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o attain_v to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v forth_o in_o those_o commandment_n and_o shall_v we_o which_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n have_v the_o whole_a scripture_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o glory_n in_o the_o fullness_n and_o perfection_n of_o our_o knowledge_n let_v we_o not_o think_v therefore_o so_o high_o of_o ourselves_o but_o let_v we_o humble_v ourselves_o before_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o confess_v this_o wisdom_n to_o be_v of_o god_n for_o to_o teach_v to_o exercise_v and_o to_o set_v forth_o the_o word_n what_o be_v it_o else_o but_o continual_o to_o offer_v sacrifice_n unto_o god_n continual_o to_o worship_v god_n continual_o to_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o three_o first_o commandment_n lamentable_a it_o be_v to_o see_v what_o a_o multitude_n there_o be_v of_o such_o as_o continual_o blaspheme_v god_n either_o those_o wicked_a israelite_n which_o forsake_v the_o way_n of_o their_o godly_a father_n become_v spiteful_a and_o cruel_a against_o the_o faithful_a amongst_o who_o he_o be_v compel_v to_o dwell_v a_o long_a season_n and_o to_o suffer_v great_a injury_n and_o cruelty_n at_o their_o hand_n and_o this_o be_v the_o subtlety_n of_o the_o malignant_a spirit_n that_o who_o he_o can_v not_o over_o come_v by_o the_o multitude_n and_o grievousness_n of_o tentation_n those_o he_o go_v about_o to_o weary_a with_o tediousness_n &_o long_a continuance_n thereof_o wherefore_o many_o be_v unskilful_a of_o this_o spiritual_a warfare_n fight_v valiant_o at_o the_o beginning_n but_o in_o the_o end_n they_o faint_v and_o cowardly_a give_v over_o this_o danger_n david_n do_v foresee_v &_o complain_v thereof_o long_o have_v i_o dwell_v say_v he_o amongst_o those_o that_o hate_v peace_n that_o be_v which_o continual_o trouble_v &_o disquiet_v the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o never_o will_v be_v at_o peace_n with_o it_o think_v by_o importunity_n and_o long_a continuance_n at_o the_o length_n to_o get_v the_o victory_n so_o job_n with_o one_o kind_n of_o calamity_n be_v not_o discourage_v but_o when_o one_o messenger_n follow_v a_o other_o and_o one_o calamity_n likewise_o come_v upon_o a_o other_o than_o his_o mind_n by_o little_a and_o little_o begin_v to_o be_v trouble_v and_o this_o be_v the_o malignity_n and_o malice_n of_o satan_n wherefore_o let_v we_o cast_v away_o all_o hope_n of_o peace_n so_o long_o as_o we_o live_v here_o and_o let_v we_o assure_v ourselves_o that_o if_o this_o day_n we_o overcome_v one_o kind_n of_o tentation_n to_o morrow_n satan_n will_v set_v upon_o we_o again_o with_o a_o other_o and_o here_o behold_v the_o craft_n and_o subtlety_n of_o the_o world_n the_o holy_a ghost_n call_v they_o heretic_n which_o be_v hater_n of_o peace_n and_o concord_n and_o this_o name_n they_o spiteful_o apply_v unto_o we_o thou_o say_v they_o be_v he_o that_o trouble_v israel_n thus_o they_o which_o trouble_v the_o church_n in_o deed_n accuse_v the_o true_a church_n and_o call_v themselves_o the_o lover_n of_o peace_n and_o concord_n this_o must_v we_o also_o suffer_v and_o so_o content_v ourselves_o with_o the_o testimony_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n which_o shall_v clear_v we_o before_o god_n that_o we_o seek_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n whereunto_o they_o be_v utter_a enemy_n as_o follow_v verse_n 7._o i_o seek_v peace_n &_o when_o i_o speak_v thereof_o they_o be_v bend_v to_o war_n this_o be_v the_o testimony_n of_o my_o conscience_n that_o i_o love_v pear_n and_o seek_v after_o it_o whereof_o then_o come_v all_o this_o trouble_n all_o this_o deadly_a war_n of_o i_o i_o grant_v but_o not_o by_o my_o default_n for_o if_o i_o will_v suffer_v these_o disturber_n and_o hater_n of_o all_o godly_a peace_n and_o concord_n to_o say_v and_o to_o do_v what_o they_o listen_v than_o will_v they_o not_o so_o rage_n than_o will_v they_o not_o seek_v my_o hurt_n as_o they_o do_v than_o will_v they_o live_v in_o peace_n but_o how_o can_v we_o hide_v those_o thing_n that_o we_o have_v see_v that_o we_o have_v hear_v &_o that_o we_o be_v command_v to_o speak_v and_o declare_v not_o in_o our_o chamber_n but_o on_o the_o house_n top_n for_o christ_n say_v god_n and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o all_o creature_n and_o again_o no_o man_n hide_v a_o light_n under_o a_o bushel_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o the_o word_n be_v in_o our_o mouth_n as_o a_o burn_a coal_n which_o can_v not_o be_v keep_v in_o but_o compel_v we_o to_o open_v our_o mouth_n hereof_o then_o come_v all_o these_o trouble_n because_o they_o take_v away_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n &_o yet_o will_v have_v we_o to_o hold_v our_o peace_n and_o here_o we_o see_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o christ_n say_v in_o the_o gospel_n 11._o when_o a_o strong_a man_n keep_v the_o house_n all_o thing_n be_v in_o peace_n but_o when_o a_o strong_a than_o he_o come_v then_o trouble_v arise_v this_o be_v then_o our_o consolation_n that_o what_o trouble_v soever_o do_v arise_v we_o rest_v upon_o the_o testimony_n of_o our_o own_o conscience_n that_o we_o do_v nothing_o else_o but_o speak_v and_o declare_v that_o we_o be_v command_v it_o be_v not_o our_o life_n therefore_o which_o they_o accuse_v but_o our_o doctrine_n abide_v the_o blame_n which_o be_v not_o we_o but_o christ_n wherefore_o let_v we_o not_o only_o contemn_v all_o peace_n and_o concord_n but_o let_v heaven_n and_o earth_n also_o perish_v rather_o than_o other_o abomination_n devise_v only_o for_o vantage_n and_o gain_n when_o i_o look_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o pope_n as_o it_o be_v before_o we_o preach_v the_o gospel_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o that_o of_o very_a purpose_n man_n be_v cast_v unto_o satan_n and_o eternal_a damnation_n by_o false_a teacher_n and_o minister_n of_o iniquity_n now_o consider_v whether_o it_o be_v not_o better_o with_o trouble_n to_o keep_v and_o enjoy_v the_o word_n of_o god_n then_o with_o loss_n of_o the_o word_n to_o live_v in_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o heavenly_a a_o peace_n as_o for_o i_o i_o will_v not_o desire_v to_o live_v in_o paradise_n without_o the_o word_n and_o with_o the_o word_n to_o live_v in_o hell_n it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n like_v as_o in_o this_o world_n we_o live_v as_o it_o be_v in_o hell_n and_o comfort_v ourselves_o only_o with_o hope_n which_o the_o word_n of_o god_n show_v unto_o we_o and_o with_o this_o hope_n we_o overcome_v all_o kind_n of_o trouble_n &_o cross_n let_v we_o therefore_o lay_v sure_a hold_n on_o this_o consolation_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o whereof_o also_o all_o they_o have_v great_a need_n that_o teach_v the_o word_n of_o truth_n namely_o that_o they_o be_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o offence_n trouble_n and_o sedition_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v offence_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v lucian_n epicure_n contemner_n and_o scorner_n of_o religion_n troubler_n of_o the_o peace_n and_o quietness_n of_o the_o church_n but_o bless_v be_v they_o which_o be_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o these_o evil_n but_o be_v preacher_n of_o peace_n and_o seek_v by_o all_o godly_a mean_n peace_n and_o christian_n unity_n in_o the_o number_n of_o who_o by_o god_n special_a grace_n we_o be_v at_o this_o day_n how_o soever_o the_o world_n think_v of_o we_o and_o we_o will_v pray_v unto_o god_n that_o for_o christ_n sake_n he_o will_v so_o keep_v we_o even_o to_o the_o uttermost_a breath_n thus_o be_v the_o enemy_n of_o god_n and_o his_o word_n paint_v out_o by_o david_n in_o this_o psalm_n and_o also_o the_o true_a state_n of_o the_o church_n teach_v we_o thereby_o that_o we_o shall_v arm_v ourselves_o against_o these_o danger_n and_o give_v thanks_n unto_o god_n for_o this_o great_a consolation_n that_o whatsoever_o tumult_n and_o trouble_n arise_v in_o the_o church_n he_o do_v not_o impute_v the_o same_o unto_o they_o that_o teach_v the_o word_n but_o unto_o the_o word_n itself_o which_o be_v not_o we_o but_o christ_n wherewith_o we_o may_v comfort_v of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n &_o find_a doctrine_n against_o pestiferous_a tongue_n and_o wicked_a opinion_n for_o that_o be_v the_o chief_a assault_n that_o satan_n make_v against_o the_o church_n of_o god_n now_o this_o psalm_n i_o take_v to_o be_v as_o a_o exhortation_n to_o the_o faithful_a faith_n for_o it_o contain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n which_o faith_n be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o thing_n invisible_a and_o to_o be_v look_v for_o and_o rest_v in_o the_o promise_n &_o word_n of_o god_n but_o because_o god_n word_n exceed_v the_o capacity_n of_o man_n &_o the_o thing_n which_o it_o promise_v seem_v either_o absurd_a &_o unlikely_a or_o impossible_a or_o else_o incredible_a &_o against_o all_o reason_n therefore_o they_o which_o have_v once_o begin_v to_o believe_v have_v need_n of_o continual_a exhortation_n to_o stir_v they_o up_o against_o the_o tentation_n of_o the_o flesh_n which_o strive_v against_o faith_n &_o the_o word_n of_o god_n lest_o the_o spirit_n be_v press_v down_o with_o the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o the_o flesh_n shall_v be_v utter_o unable_a to_o think_v of_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n for_o our_o life_n be_v full_a of_o trouble_n toss_v with_o continual_a tempest_n as_o they_o which_o be_v sail_v on_o the_o sea_n and_o we_o be_v carry_v away_o every_o moment_n with_o the_o blast_n of_o tentation_n while_o our_o mind_n be_v assail_v either_o with_o prosperity_n or_o adversity_n with_o wealth_n or_o poverty_n with_o glory_n or_o ignominy_n with_o joy_n or_o sorrow_n and_o hereof_o yet_o do_v fellow_n much_o more_o grevous_a &_o dangerous_a tentation_n that_o be_v to_o say_v security_n and_o desperation_n therefore_o when_o these_o storm_n blow_v it_o be_v necessary_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v stir_v up_o with_o cross_n seem_v to_o be_v utter_o forsake_v in_o like_a manner_n there_o be_v a_o compare_v together_o of_o contrary_n to_o be_v understand_v throughout_o this_o whole_a psalm_n contrary_n as_o diverse_a way_n as_o amongst_o my_o people_n some_o run_v to_o bethel_n some_o to_o gilgal_n some_o to_o bethaven_n as_o mountain_n from_o whence_o they_o look_v for_o help_v and_o succour_v even_o as_o in_o popery_n they_o run_v to_o every_o stock_n and_o block_n as_o to_o their_o only_a patroness_n and_o helper_n with_o kneel_v knock_v creep_v kiss_v and_o lick_v for_o the_o relief_n and_o comfort_n be_v infinite_a which_o the_o heart_n believe_v and_o seek_v after_o when_o it_o be_v in_o trouble_n and_o distress_n and_o it_o be_v
upon_o we_o thus_o david_n under_o these_o word_n the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n comprehend_v god_n himself_o his_o name_n and_o his_o word_n whereunto_o the_o sabbath_n be_v dedicate_v in_o the_o which_o we_o shall_v rest_v from_o other_o business_n and_o harken_v unto_o the_o lord_n speak_v unto_o us._n lord_n this_o be_v to_o go_v into_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o for_o this_o manifest_a testimony_n that_o he_o will_v be_v their_o everlasting_a defender_n and_o protector_n whereby_o their_o faith_n be_v establish_v and_o confirm_v for_o ever_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n then_o mighty_o increase_v of_o such_o a_o manner_n of_o building_n speak_v david_n also_o in_o this_o place_n that_o albeit_o jerusalem_n be_v compass_v about_o with_o so_o many_o enemy_n and_o idolatrous_a sceptre_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v not_o rest_v upon_o the_o just_a god_n be_v move_v say_v he_o to_o help_v and_o defend_v the_o just_a for_o else_o it_o may_v so_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o god_n shall_v have_v no_o church_n at_o all_o and_o the_o just_a shall_v put_v forth_o their_o hand_n to_o wickedness_n so_o we_o find_v in_o jeremy_n that_o before_o the_o people_n be_v deliver_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o babylonian_n they_o have_v a_o promise_n that_o after_o seventy_o year_n they_o shall_v return_v again_o to_o jerusalem_n because_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v bring_v into_o doubt_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o so_o utter_o despair_v and_o fall_v away_o from_o god_n shall_v turn_v to_o gentility_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o psalm_n lest_o the_o godly_a shall_v turn_v to_o child_n and_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v dear_a unto_o they_o except_o therefore_o their_o mind_n be_v raise_v up_o again_o and_o comfort_v first_o with_o the_o word_n and_o promise_n and_o then_o with_o the_o performance_n and_o execution_n of_o the_o same_o many_o will_v say_v there_o be_v not_o god_n therefore_o god_n must_v needs_o show_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o god_n not_o only_o in_o word_n but_o also_o in_o deed_n david_n have_v great_a promise_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o by_o his_o own_o son_n he_o be_v drive_v out_o of_o his_o kingdom_n and_o so_o persecute_v that_o he_o be_v compel_v to_o fly_v away_o barehead_a and_o barefoot_a this_o be_v a_o sore_a tentation_n wherefore_o the_o great_a and_o ample_a promise_n make_v unto_o he_o can_v never_o have_v raise_v he_o up_o &_o comfort_v he_o again_o except_o god_n have_v in_o deed_n deliver_v he_o out_o of_o this_o great_a misery_n and_o affliction_n even_o so_o if_o we_o have_v no_o more_o but_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o support_v we_o against_o the_o papist_n and_o adversary_n of_o the_o word_n yea_o if_o god_n do_v not_o in_o deed_n fight_v for_o we_o and_o defend_v we_o against_o their_o tyranny_n we_o shall_v be_v swallow_v up_o with_o sorrow_n and_o bring_v even_o to_o desperation_n god_n therefore_o work_v both_o way_n he_o raise_v up_o with_o the_o word_n and_o promise_n and_o deliver_v out_o of_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n by_o execution_n of_o the_o deed_n that_o according_a to_o the_o say_n of_o s._n paul_n the_o tentation_n shall_v not_o be_v above_o our_o strength_n but_o shall_v have_v a_o end_n and_o we_o learn_v by_o our_o own_o experience_n that_o the_o first_o commandment_n i_o be_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n be_v most_o certain_a and_o infallible_a therefore_o when_o he_o say_v lest_o the_o just_a shall_v put_v forth_o their_o hand_n to_o wickedness_n it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v lest_o the_o just_a shall_v turn_v away_o from_o god_n and_o fall_n to_o gentility_n for_o god_n have_v a_o double_a care_n over_o the_o faithful_a first_o that_o they_o be_v not_o overcome_v but_o may_v overcome_v the_o tentation_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o the_o word_n and_o promise_n the_o second_o be_v that_o the_o tentation_n be_v not_o perpetual_a even_o so_o must_v we_o be_v undouted_o persuade_v that_o beside_o the_o infallible_a promise_n which_o we_o have_v of_o the_o good_a will_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o and_o in_o the_o end_n of_o everlasting_a life_n we_o shall_v be_v also_o deliver_v and_o our_o adversary_n destroy_v albeit_o we_o can_v see_v no_o manner_n of_o way_n or_o possible_a mean_n how_o it_o may_v be_v do_v this_o be_v it_o then_o that_o this_o verse_n here_o set_v forth_o that_o god_n be_v so_o careful_a for_o the_o safety_n of_o his_o people_n that_o he_o seem_v to_o fear_v lest_o they_o shall_v put_v forth_o their_o hand_n to_o wickedness_n &_o fall_v away_o from_o he_o whereby_o it_o may_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v no_o people_n &_o so_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o god_n for_o god_n be_v the_o god_n of_o the_o live_n and_o therefore_o he_o must_v needs_o have_v a_o people_n wherefore_o there_o must_v ever_o be_v some_o remain_v which_o may_v praise_v and_o worship_v he_o if_o there_o must_v needs_o be_v such_o a_o number_n remain_v god_n must_v of_o necessity_n make_v a_o end_n also_o of_o tentation_n but_o here_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o we_o do_v not_o appoint_v the_o time_n of_o this_o deliverance_n for_o before_o that_o come_v god_n will_v have_v we_o try_v to_o the_o uttermost_a and_o bring_v to_o that_o extremity_n that_o all_o our_o hope_n and_o trust_n shall_v be_v utter_o spend_v &_o we_o at_o the_o point_n of_o desperation_n now_o when_o we_o be_v bring_v into_o this_o case_n that_o we_o can_v see_v nothing_o but_o desperation_n then_o even_o than_o god_n send_v comfort_n in_o death_n he_o show_v life_n and_o even_o in_o damnation_n he_o bring_v salvation_n brief_o of_o nothing_o he_o make_v all_o thing_n and_o when_o all_o hope_n of_o remedy_n be_v past_a then_o begin_v he_o to_o work_v and_o frame_v all_o new_a again_o in_o most_o perfect_a wise_a thus_o can_v not_o the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n do_v this_o be_v the_o singular_a work_n of_o god_n therefore_o that_o when_o thou_o think_v thyself_o clean_o cast_v away_o and_o utter_o forlese_v even_o than_o thou_o shall_v be_v most_o sure_a and_o safe_a and_o most_o glorious_o shine_v as_o the_o day_n star_n in_o the_o firmament_n these_o thing_n be_v easy_o teach_v but_o by_o experience_n we_o find_v and_o feel_v how_o far_o they_o pass_v all_o reason_n and_o power_n of_o man_n &_o how_o hardly_o we_o can_v believe_v that_o god_n make_v all_o thing_n of_o nothing_o that_o he_o be_v careful_a for_o we_o whether_o we_o be_v afflict_v in_o the_o flesh_n or_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o he_o be_v more_o mindful_a of_o our_o deliverance_n than_o we_o ourselves_o can_v be_v these_o thing_n therefore_o must_v be_v often_o &_o diligent_o teach_v that_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o heavenly_a wisdom_n which_o the_o first_o commandment_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o namely_o that_o our_o god_n be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o of_o old_a thing_n be_v wont_a to_o make_v all_o new_a new_a of_o poor_a to_o make_v rich_a of_o despise_a glorious_a and_o this_o last_o we_o will_v all_o glad_o have_v but_o that_o will_v not_o be_v except_o contempt_n and_o poverty_n do_v go_v before_o here_o have_v we_o then_o a_o singular_a promise_n and_o consolation_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v
he_o find_v some_o fault_n in_o his_o wife_n or_o else_o some_o other_o trouble_n happen_v then_o either_o he_o become_v a_o lion_n in_o his_o own_o house_n as_o solomon_n say_v and_o be_v sorry_a for_o that_o he_o have_v do_v or_o else_o neglect_v his_o family_n he_o go_v one_o way_n and_o his_o wife_n a_o other_o and_o so_o he_o waste_v all_o that_o he_o have_v for_o when_o he_o see_v that_o all_o thing_n which_o he_o think_v shall_v have_v have_v most_o happy_a success_n fall_v out_o clean_a contrary_n to_o his_o expectation_n he_o rage_v and_o lay_v all_o the_o fault_n in_o matrimony_n family_n which_o thing_n god_n have_v not_o give_v unto_o thou_o for_o thou_o shall_v have_v be_v but_o only_o the_o instrumental_a thereof_o wherefore_o submit_v thyself_o rather_o to_o a_o other_o master_n and_o governor_n and_o say_v oh_o lord_n teach_v thou_o i_o that_o i_o may_v right_o govern_v my_o family_n execute_v my_o office_n in_o the_o common_a wealth_n etc_n etc_n rule_n thou_o thing_n will_v prosper_v and_o happy_o proceed_v but_o now_o whether_o you_o behold_v the_o magistrate_n or_o new_a marry_a person_n you_o shall_v see_v great_a presumption_n for_o they_o so_o begin_v the_o first_o cause_n alone_o for_o when_o either_o the_o pen_n will_v teach_v the_o scribe_n how_o to_o write_v or_o the_o axe_n will_v teach_v the_o carpenter_n how_o to_o square_v his_o timber_n nothing_o can_v be_v well_o do_v and_o even_o so_o be_v it_o in_o this_o case_n when_o we_o will_v take_v upon_o we_o such_o government_n as_o belong_v to_o god_n alone_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o to_o consider_v the_o example_n of_o this_o great_a folly_n which_o be_v to_o be_v see_v every_o where_o abundant_o in_o prince_n court_n in_o city_n and_o family_n for_o thus_o do_v they_o think_v i_o be_o the_o author_n and_o master_n of_o this_o family_n this_o policy_n this_o government_n etc_n etc_n most_o worthy_o therefore_o be_v they_o trouble_v and_o vex_v when_o there_o follow_v no_o such_o success_n as_o they_o look_v for_o and_o hereupon_o follow_v as_o i_o say_v either_o a_o miserable_a confusion_n both_o in_o household_n and_o politic_a government_n or_o else_o plain_a tyranny_n so_o in_o matrimony_n if_o neither_o the_o husband_n will_v bear_v with_o his_o wife_n nor_o the_o wife_n will_v give_v place_n to_o her_o husband_n not_o only_o the_o mutual_a love_n and_o concord_n in_o matrimony_n be_v break_v but_o also_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o that_o the_o husband_n be_v change_v into_o a_o tyrant_n or_o else_o he_o neglect_v and_o forsake_v all_o together_o what_o must_v we_o here_o do_v the_o pope_n answer_v and_o give_v this_o counsel_n that_o we_o shall_v fly_v into_o some_o solitary_a place_n or_o into_o some_o monastery_n not_o so_o say_v the_o holy_a ghost_n this_o be_v not_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n but_o of_o the_o devil_n but_o thus_o do_v thou_o consider_v that_o thou_o be_v god_n instrument_n &_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v yet_o a_o other_o magistrate_n and_o principal_a governor_n of_o the_o house_n god._n who_o name_n be_v the_o lord_n except_o he_o be_v the_o principal_a cause_n it_o shall_v follow_v as_o this_o psalm_n say_v that_o the_o house_n shall_v not_o be_v build_v and_o that_o neither_o politic_a nor_o household_n government_n shall_v prosper_v so_o must_v we_o judge_v also_o of_o the_o final_a cause_n if_o thou_o will_v refer_v all_o thing_n to_o that_o end_n which_o thou_o have_v imagine_v and_o think_v that_o thou_o shall_v not_o be_v deceive_v thou_o err_v as_o experience_n teach_v one_o household_n government_n as_o a_o god_n and_o think_v that_o thy_o wisdom_n and_o thy_o policy_n be_v able_a to_o govern_v these_o thing_n and_o that_o thou_o have_v no_o need_n to_o lift_v up_o thine_o eye_n to_o he_o which_o be_v above_o and_o to_o desire_v his_o help_n when_o thou_o see_v therefore_o that_o afterwards_o it_o fall_v out_o otherwise_o than_o do_v thou_o learn_v to_o sing_v this_o psalm_n except_o the_o lord_n build_v the_o city_n they_o labour_v in_o vain_a that_o build_v it_o before_o thou_o think_v thou_o there_o be_v no_o other_o lord_n or_o governor_n beside_o thyself_o of_o who_o help_n thou_o shall_v have_v need_n to_o govern_v thy_o house_n other_o which_o be_v not_o come_v to_o this_o knowledge_n either_o be_v at_o continual_a debate_n with_o their_o and_o earthly_a mind_n thy_o climb_a and_o presumptuous_a spirit_n therefore_o god_n just_o confound_v why_o do_v thou_o not_o rather_o say_v on_o this_o wise_a lord_n thou_o have_v give_v i_o a_o wife_n child_n a_o family_n assist_v i_o and_o help_v i_o govern_v thou_o and_o guide_v they_o or_o else_o in_o vain_a be_v all_o my_o travel_n now_o for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o holy_a scripture_n teach_v we_o and_o experience_n also_o agree_v thereunto_o that_o without_o god_n help_v all_o be_v in_o vain_a that_o we_o take_v in_o hand_n therefore_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v ignorant_a of_o these_o thing_n they_o labour_v in_o vain_a say_v he_o which_o build_v it_o the_o cause_n be_v this_o that_o either_o they_o become_v tyrant_n or_o else_o desperate_a &_o forsake_v all_o together_o so_o come_v to_o ruin_v both_o politic_a and_o household_n government_n now_o what_o madness_n be_v this_o so_o to_o rule_v that_o either_o thou_o or_o thy_o family_n must_v perish_v why_o do_v we_o not_o rather_o as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o may_v preserve_v both_o which_o be_v if_o we_o learn_v to_o know_v the_o principal_a cause_n and_o the_o true_a master_n and_o governor_n of_o the_o house_n household_n if_o we_o call_v upon_o he_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o say_v thou_o lord_n have_v create_v i_o to_o be_v a_o ruler_n of_o a_o family_n and_o have_v give_v i_o those_o thing_n which_o pertain_v thereunto_o but_o this_o burden_n be_v to_o heavy_a for_o i_o to_o bear_v therefore_o take_v upon_o thou_o my_o charge_n oh_o lord_n govern_v thou_o in_o my_o steed_n may_v see_v what_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v in_o this_o psalm_n namely_o to_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a way_n to_o righteousness_n life_n and_o salvation_n again_o to_o show_v we_o the_o way_n how_o to_o escape_v death_n sin_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o out_o of_o this_o life_n we_o may_v pass_v to_o life_n everlasting_a and_o in_o teach_v of_o these_o thing_n he_o show_v his_o own_o experience_n and_o lay_v open_a unto_o we_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v exercise_v and_o school_v with_o many_o tentation_n that_o so_o he_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o doctrine_n wherein_o he_o go_v about_o here_o to_o enstruct_v we_o also_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o he_o rest_v whole_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o in_o the_o sure_a trust_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o these_o thing_n shall_v more_o clear_o appear_v hereafter_o in_o expound_v of_o the_o psalm_n verse_n 1._o out_o of_o the_o depth_n have_v i_o call_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n it_o may_v seem_v that_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o more_o word_n than_o need_v but_o he_o that_o consider_v well_o the_o cause_n which_o force_v desperation_n think_v himself_o forsake_v of_o god_n when_o he_o see_v his_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o desert_n accuse_v before_o god_n as_o a_o terrible_a judge_n yea_o when_o it_o seem_v unto_o he_o that_o god_n have_v not_o only_o forsake_v he_o but_o cast_v he_o away_o for_o ever_o hate_v &_o abhor_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n these_o tentation_n be_v much_o more_o terrible_a than_o those_o which_o man_n common_o fall_v into_o for_o they_o be_v not_o without_o danger_n of_o soul_n &_o eternal_a salvation_n therefore_o he_o use_v here_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n say_v out_o of_o the_o depth_n i_o call_v unto_o thou_o etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v great_a be_v the_o trouble_n wherewith_o i_o be_o oppress_v for_o i_o feel_v my_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o just_a wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o i_o for_o the_o same_o neither_o can_v i_o find_v relief_n or_o comfort_n to_o my_o restless_a &_o afflict_a soul_n against_o the_o malice_n of_o man_n wherewith_o they_o molest_v and_o count_v inferior_a sin_n as_o the_o offence_n of_o youth_n the_o deject_v &_o break_v hearted_a may_v more_o easy_o be_v raise_v up_o again_o but_o these_o affliction_n seem_v to_o they_o and_o be_v in_o deed_n untollerable_a when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o oppress_v with_o such_o horrible_a and_o hellish_a cogitation_n that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o they_o be_v cast_v away_o from_o god_n for_o ever_o they_o therefore_o that_o feel_v such_o bitter_a tentation_n god._n have_v here_o a_o example_n that_o david_n in_o himself_o feel_v and_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o like_a for_o it_o make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grevous_a when_o they_o which_o be_v thus_o afflict_v feel_v that_o as_o to_o they_o it_o seem_v which_o none_o else_o do_v feel_v but_o they_o alone_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o that_o even_o the_o godly_a have_v ever_o suffer_v the_o same_o affliction_n and_o have_v be_v beat_v down_o even_o to_o death_n with_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v here_o by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n cry_v even_o as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o hell_n and_o say_n out_o of_o the_o depth_n do_v i_o cry_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n etc_n etc_n but_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o sustain_v not_o these_o trouble_n and_o tentation_n alone_o but_o we_o must_v also_o learn_v the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n raise_v up_o the_o dead_a to_o life_n but_o be_v as_o unsensible_a as_o stone_n for_o in_o this_o security_n they_o be_v not_o only_o ignorant_a what_o this_o propitiation_n and_o this_o mercy_n be_v but_o also_o they_o persecute_v the_o same_o such_o therefore_o do_v commit_v a_o double_a sin_n more_o grievous_a than_o the_o publican_n and_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v well_o of_o they_o harlot_n and_o publican_n shall_v enter_v before_o you_o into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n for_o they_o be_v easy_o persuade_v that_o they_o be_v sinner_n and_o that_o that_o do_v believe_v but_o as_o touch_v sin_n he_o command_v that_o we_o shall_v cast_v away_o all_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o law_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n only_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n crucify_v for_o our_o sin_n by_o this_o mean_n presumption_n be_v take_v away_o and_o fear_n remain_v not_o such_o a_o fear_n as_o be_v in_o the_o desperate_a but_o such_o as_o we_o see_v in_o good_a and_o well_o nurter_v child_n towards_o their_o parent_n no_o monk_n therefore_o shall_v be_v save_v because_o of_o his_o order_n or_o faithful_o govern_v and_o defend_v his_o subject_n but_o as_o touch_v the_o monk_n you_o may_v easy_o prove_v this_o to_o be_v true_a for_o that_o kind_a of_o life_n be_v altogether_o contrary_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o to_o teach_v and_o instruct_v the_o church_n to_o govern_v the_o common_a wealth_n be_v in_o deed_n most_o holy_a and_o excellent_a work_n and_o yet_o be_v they_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n which_o of_o themselves_o bring_v either_o desperation_n or_o presumption_n wherefore_o though_o these_o work_n be_v never_o so_o perfect_a and_o holy_a yet_o be_v there_o no_o salvation_n but_o in_o this_o alone_a that_o there_o be_v mercy_n with_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v fear_v wherefore_o god_n have_v just_o shut_v up_o all_o under_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v have_v mercy_n upon_o all_o for_o if_o you_o leave_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n whereby_o he_o may_v deserve_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n no_o man_n will_v fear_v or_o worship_n be_v hang_v up_o upon_o a_o tree_n then_o gird_v while_o he_o think_v by_o the_o observation_n of_o other_o tradition_n to_o please_v god_n do_v he_o not_o depart_v from_o the_o true_a god_n &_o set_v his_o own_o imagination_n in_o the_o stead_n of_o god_n while_o he_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n think_v the_o same_o that_o he_o imagine_v of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o follow_v plain_a idolatry_n which_o imagine_v a_o strange_a god_n and_o lose_v the_o true_a god_n for_o the_o true_a god_n be_v propitiation_n and_o mercy_n through_o christ_n but_o such_o as_o glory_v in_o their_o work_n will_v make_v their_o work_n propitiatory_a and_o available_a to_o deserve_v grace_n believe_v wherefore_o god_n reject_v all_o work_n and_o set_v forth_o his_o naked_a and_o bare_a mercy_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v and_o not_o contemn_v of_o the_o presumptuous_a hereby_o take_v away_o all_o cause_n of_o presumption_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o out_o of_o this_o verse_n or_o this_o general_a proposition_n that_o when_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n of_o grace_n or_o propitiation_n be_v lose_v it_o follow_v that_o in_o steed_n thereof_o idolatry_n must_v needs_o reign_v for_o take_v away_o grace_n &_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n also_o as_o the_o prophet_n say_v must_v needs_o follow_v and_o what_o be_v it_o else_o to_o fear_n god_n but_o to_o reverence_v &_o to_o worship_n god_n also_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o be_v full_a of_o mercy_n &_o goodness_n &_o therefore_o to_o obey_v he_o this_o god_n do_v i_o lose_v when_o i_o be_v a_o monk_n and_o walk_v in_o the_o confidence_n of_o my_o own_o righteousness_n for_o by_o experience_n i_o be_o able_a to_o prove_v that_o of_o the_o most_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n there_o can_v nothing_o else_o follow_v but_o either_o desperation_n which_o be_v more_o seldom_o or_o presumption_n which_o be_v more_o common_a for_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o the_o devil_n can_v not_o beware_v but_o they_o must_v needs_o presume_v thou_o will_v say_v then_o shall_v we_o not_o keep_v the_o law_n justify_v shall_v we_o not_o do_v good_a work_n yes_o very_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v they_o for_o god_n therefore_o have_v a_o church_n
deserve_v thus_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o when_o the_o wicked_a have_v once_o take_v their_o course_n like_a unto_o a_o wild_a horse_n they_o never_o rest_v until_o they_o come_v to_o a_o miserable_a end_n the_o same_o haâ—â—eth_v also_o to_o all_o those_o which_o seek_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o work_n the_o pharisee_o never_o cease_v to_o persecute_v the_o gospel_n and_o to_o trust_v in_o their_o own_o righteousness_n until_o jerusalem_n the_o kingdom_n &_o the_o priesthood_n be_v utter_o destroy_v this_o be_v the_o end_n of_o presumption_n when_o it_o be_v not_o bridle_v and_o repress_v by_o the_o word_n true_a it_o be_v therefore_o that_o this_o enormity_n can_v not_o be_v remedy_v but_o either_o by_o grace_n or_o by_o wrath_n thus_o general_o in_o a_o manner_n they_o understand_v this_o psalm_n to_o be_v write_v against_o pride_n and_o presumption_n pride_n but_o in_o my_o judgement_n it_o may_v be_v more_o apt_o apply_v unto_o the_o spiritual_a pride_n of_o man_n
