by_o faith_n which_o receive_v hand_n be_v also_o give_v so_o that_o the_o righteousness_n upon_o which_o all_o be_v justify_v be_v one_o &_o the_o same_o &_o be_v a_o righteousness_n without_o they_o &_o therefore_o the_o flesh_n have_v no_o seem_a occasion_n of_o boast_v in_o this_o matter_n he_o except_v 2._o suppose_v the_o act_n of_o believe_a be_v from_o a_o man_n self_n yet_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o boast_v because_o that_o weight_n of_o glory_n be_v not_o give_v to_o faith_n for_o any_o worth_n in_o it_o but_o by_o the_o most_o free_a gracious_a &_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n if_o a_o king_n for_o take_v a_o pin_n of_o a_o man_n sleeve_n shall_v raise_v his_o house_n &_o make_v he_o honourable_a in_o the_o state_n be_v it_o not_o a_o ridiculous_a thing_n for_o such_o a_o man_n to_o brag_v of_o the_o pin_n of_o his_o sleeve_n etc._n etc._n ans._n 1_o can_v we_o think_v that_o those_o against_o who_o the_o apostle_n dispute_v in_o this_o matter_n do_v think_v that_o there_o be_v worth_a &_o excellency_n in_o all_o their_o work_n to_o merit_v the_o exceed_a great_a &_o eternal_a weight_n of_o glory_n do_v abraham_n think_v so_o and_o yet_o though_o we_o can_v say_v that_o he_o think_v so_o paul_n not_o withstand_v deny_v that_o he_o be_v justify_v by_o his_o work_n 2_o if_o the_o act_n of_o believe_v be_v from_o a_o man_n self_n &_o make_v all_o that_o righteousness_n which_o he_o
be_v conceive_v to_o have_v when_o justify_v &_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o which_o he_o be_v justify_v he_o shall_v not_o only_o have_v occasion_n but_o even_o cause_n of_o boast_v before_o man_n notwithstanding_o of_o the_o disproportion_n betwixt_o faith_n &_o the_o weight_n of_o glory_n for_o it_o may_v then_o be_v say_v that_o he_o have_v make_v himself_o to_o differ_v &_o that_o he_o have_v lay_v down_o out_o of_o his_o own_o purpose_n the_o whole_a price_n that_o be_v require_v and_o so_o have_v according_a to_o the_o term_n of_o the_o compact_a make_v a_o purchase_n of_o glory_n to_o himself_o as_o the_o man_n with_o the_o pin_n in_o his_o sleeve_n if_o the_o law_n &_o covenant_n have_v so_o stand_v that_o all_o that_o give_v the_o prince_n a_o pin_n out_o of_o his_o sleeve_n shall_v receive_v such_o &_o such_o great_a thing_n &_o he_o only_o &_o a_o few_o more_o be_v so_o good_a merchant_n as_o to_o give_v the_o pin_n when_o other_o do_v not_o may_v well_o have_v boast_v &_o say_v he_o have_v not_o get_v those_o great_a thing_n for_o nothing_o for_o he_o lay_v down_o the_o full_a price_n condescend_v upon_o by_o law_n &_o covenant_n and_o have_v ground_n of_o boast_v at_o least_o before_o man_n though_o not_o before_o the_o prince_n who_o gracious_o condescend_v to_o reward_v so_o rich_o such_o a_o mean_a gift_n 3_o this_o answer_n will_v say_v that_o there_o have_v be_v no_o ground_n of_o boast_v even_o by_o the_o old_a covenant_n of_o work_n though_o man_n have_v keep_v the_o law_n perfect_o for_o even_o then_o it_o may_v have_v be_v say_v that_o the_o weight_n of_o glory_n be_v not_o give_v for_o the_o real_o worth_a &_o excellency_n of_o perfect_a obedience_n perfect_a obedience_n &_o holiness_n have_v its_o sufficient_a reward_n in_o its_o own_o bosom_n for_o it_o be_v a_o reward_n to_o itself_o but_o he_o say_v if_o man_n have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n &_o be_v justify_v that_o way_n there_o have_v be_v some_o pretence_n of_o boast_v or_o glory_v in_o themselves_o ans._n and_o why_o not_o also_o if_o faith_n be_v now_o account_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n and_o be_v now_o impute_v to_o we_o as_o all_o our_o righteousness_n let_v we_o see_v if_o the_o reason_n which_o he_o bring_v for_o the_o former_a will_v not_o also_o evince_v this_o his_o first_o be_v this_o because_o such_o a_o righteonsness_n have_v hold_v some_o proportion_n at_o least_o that_o shall_v have_v be_v give_v to_o it_o rom._n 4._o vers_fw-la 4._o god_n have_v give_v they_o no_o more_o than_o what_o they_o have_v at_o least_o in_o some_o sort_n deserve_v ans._n but_o who_o can_v tell_v we_o what_o that_o proportion_n or_o that_o sort_n will_v have_v be_v and_o may_v not_o also_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v here_o suppose_a to_o be_v of_o ourselves_o and_o not_o the_o mere_a gift_n of_o god_n be_v say_v to_o hold_v some_o proportion_n at_o least_o in_o some_o fort_n yea_o may_v it_o not_o in_o this_o respect_n be_v say_v to_o hold_v a_o great_a proportion_n viz._n that_o the_o exerting_fw-mi of_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n now_o will_v argue_v more_o strength_n of_o free_a will_n to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a that_o perfect_a obedience_n in_o adam_n for_o though_o we_o shall_v suppose_v that_o man_n now_o have_v as_o full_a a_o power_n to_o believe_v if_o he_o will_v as_o adam_n have_v to_o obey_v yet_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o there_o be_v much_o more_o opposition_n now_o even_o within_o to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a than_o there_o be_v in_o adam_n and_o consequent_o that_o the_o virtue_n appear_v in_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n must_v be_v conceive_v as_o great_a than_o what_o can_v have_v appear_v in_o adam_n full_a obedience_n who_o have_v nothing_o within_o to_o oppose_v he_o or_o prove_v a_o remora_fw-la in_o his_o way_n as_o it_o will_v argue_v more_o valour_n for_o a_o weak_a soldier_n to_o go_v a_o quarter_n of_o a_o mile_n fight_v with_o his_o enemy_n in_o the_o way_n then_o for_o a_o giant_n to_o go_v twenty_o mile_n wherein_o he_o shall_v meet_v with_o no_o opposition_n but_o though_o the_o proportion_n be_v grant_v to_o be_v great_a betwixt_o the_o reward_n and_o adam_n obedience_n than_o be_v betwixt_o the_o reward_n &_o faith_n yet_o there_o must_v be_v &_o will_v be_v a_o proportion_n grant_v for_o majus_fw-la &_o minus_fw-la non_fw-la variant_n speciem_fw-la degree_n make_v no_o variation_n in_o kind_n 2_o can_n or_o will_v it_o be_v say_v that_o god_n have_v give_v the_o perfect_a obeyer_n no_o more_o than_o he_o have_v in_o some_o sort_n at_o least_o deserve_v if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v there_o have_v be_v no_o promise_n make_v of_o such_o a_o reward_n to_o obeyer_n or_o antecedent_o to_o a_o covenant_n and_o if_o this_o can_v be_v say_v as_o it_o can_v be_v say_v by_o any_o i_o suppose_v who_o serious_o consider_v the_o matter_n than_o the_o reward_n be_v make_v such_o only_a by_o god_n free_a condescension_n &_o god_n have_v in_o that_o case_n give_v what_o they_o have_v deserve_v according_a to_o the_o covenant_n make_v wherein_o such_o a_o reward_n be_v promise_v to_o obeyer_n and_o in_o justice_n bestow_v it_o as_o a_o reward_n upon_o such_o as_o do_v fulfil_v the_o condition_n now_o when_o faith_n be_v say_v to_o have_v the_o same_o place_n in_o the_o new_a covenant_n that_o perfect_a obedience_n have_v in_o the_o old_a and_o so_o the_o same_o efficacy_n &_o influence_n in_o the_o reward_n &_o withal_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o faith_n be_v now_o no_o more_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n than_o perfect_a obedience_n be_v under_o the_o old_a law_n be_v it_o not_o as_o true_a now_o that_o god_n give_v no_o more_o than_o what_o believer_n have_v by_o faith_n at_o least_o in_o some_o sort_n deserve_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o compact_a &_o new_a covenant_n wherein_o this_o reward_n be_v promise_v as_o it_o will_v have_v be_v under_o the_o old_a covenant_n and_o be_v it_o not_o hence_o also_o manifest_a that_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v make_v to_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o the_o old_a and_o that_o the_o reward_n be_v as_o well_o now_o of_o debt_n as_o be_v will_v have_v be_v by_o the_o old_a covenant_n be_v it_o not_o also_o hence_o undeniable_a that_o hereby_o there_o be_v a_o proportion_n acknowledge_v in_o some_o sort_n betwixt_o faith_n &_o the_o reward_n where_o be_v then_o the_o difference_n let_v we_o see_v if_o his_o next_o reason_n will_v help_v here_o second_o he_o say_v because_o if_o they_o have_v make_v out_o their_o happiness_n that_o way_n they_o have_v do_v it_o out_o of_o themselves_o that_o be_v out_o of_o the_o strength_n of_o those_o ability_n which_o be_v essential_a to_o their_o nature_n &_o in_o the_o stricke_v &_o most_o proper_a sense_n that_o can_v be_v speak_v of_o or_o apply_v to_o a_o creature_n their_o own_o ans._n 1_o when_o he_o suppose_v as_o we_o see_v in_o the_o exception_n the_o act_n of_o believe_v to_o be_v from_o a_o man_n self_n must_v we_o not_o also_o say_v that_o the_o believer_n make_v out_o his_o happiness_n this_o way_n do_v it_o out_o of_o himself_o though_o not_o out_o of_o the_o strength_n of_o ability_n essential_a to_o his_o nature_n 2_o i_o much_o doubt_v if_o those_o ability_n if_o he_o speak_v of_o moral_a ability_n as_o he_o must_v or_o speak_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n can_v be_v say_v to_o have_v be_v essential_a to_o man_n nature_n for_o than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o man_n after_o he_o lose_v these_o ability_n as_o it_o must_v be_v grant_v he_o do_v when_o he_o fall_v be_v no_o more_o a_o compleet_n man_n want_v something_o that_o be_v essential_a to_o his_o nature_n these_o ability_n may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v be_v natural_a or_o con-natural_a to_o he_o consider_v the_o state_n the_o lord_n think_v good_a to_o create_v he_o in_o and_o so_o not_o mere_o supernatural_a but_o how_o they_o can_v be_v say_v to_o have_v be_v essential_a to_o his_o nature_n i_o see_v not_o 2_o when_o god_n give_v adam_n these_o ability_n and_o thereby_o furnish_v he_o with_o a_o sufficient_a stock_n be_v he_o not_o to_o acknowledge_v god_n for_o all_o that_o he_o do_v or_o be_v he_o afterward_o to_o act_v without_o dependence_n upon_o or_o influence_n from_o god_n the_o first_o cause_n if_o not_o as_o it_o be_v confess_v when_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v so_o only_o in_o a_o sense_n that_o can_v agree_v to_o a_o creature_n and_o when_o faith_n be_v here_o suppose_a to_o be_v from_o man_n self_n act_v in_o the_o same_o dependence_n on_o god_n and_o receive_v the_o same_o influence_n from_o he_o as_o the_o first_o cause_n may_v not_o faith_n also_o be_v say_v to_o be_v man_n own_o in_o as_o strick_v
