holy_a ghost_n work_v faith_n viz._n 1._o by_o enlighten_v the_o mind_n that_o it_o may_v understand_v the_o word_n 2._o by_o move_v the_o will_n that_o it_o may_v assent_v unto_o the_o word_n once_o understand_v 3._o by_o put_v a_o efficacy_n in_o the_o law_n for_o though_o the_o law_n be_v fit_a to_o humble_v a_o man_n yet_o be_v it_o no_o worker_n of_o sanctification_n 4._o by_o show_v the_o that_o be_v by_o make_v sin_n to_o be_v no_o sin_n but_o by_o take_v away_o the_o efficacy_n of_o sin_n that_o it_o do_v not_o condemn_v we_o daniel_n lion_n be_v lion_n still_o though_o god_n at_o that_o time_n take_v their_o fierceness_n from_o they_o
proceed_v not_o from_o faith_n yet_o shall_v the_o common_a action_n of_o our_o call_v be_v reckon_v good_a work_n if_o they_o come_v from_o faith_n and_o love_n if_o they_o be_v do_v as_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o he_o will_v accept_v they_o and_o for_o this_o cause_n the_o good_a purpose_n in_o many_o be_v naught_o because_o they_o have_v not_o faith_n for_o their_o ground_n good_a work_n be_v the_o fruit_n of_o sanctification_n they_o go_v not_o before_o justification_n but_o they_o follow_v after_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v for_o first_o by_o grace_n we_o be_v justify_v and_o be_v justify_v we_o perform_v good_a work_n for_o man_n can_v do_v any_o work_n that_o be_v good_a and_o godly_a be_v not_o yet_o regenerate_v but_o when_o he_o be_v prevent_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o inspiration_n of_o his_o spirit_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n than_o he_o may_v do_v good_a work_n and_o the_o best_a work_n before_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o inspiration_n of_o his_o spirit_n be_v not_o please_v to_o god_n forasmuch_o as_o they_o spring_v not_o of_o faith_n yea_o before_o justification_n they_o have_v the_o nature_n of_o sin_n now_o here_o we_o must_v know_v that_o good_a work_n be_v in_o a_o kind_a necessary_a to_o salvation_n yet_o not_o as_o cause_n thereof_o either_o efficient_a or_o help_v any_o way_n but_o only_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o our_o justification_n and_o a_o token_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o we_o for_o this_o condition_n import_v that_o we_o must_v exercise_v mercy_n towards_o our_o brethren_n and_o so_o break_v off_o the_o course_n of_o our_o sin_n if_o we_o look_v for_o mercy_n at_o god_n hand_n for_o the_o word_n in_o this_o petition_n be_v comparative_a betoken_v a_o likeness_n and_o similitude_n between_o god_n forgive_a and_o we_o which_o must_v be_v right_o understand_v because_o our_o forgiveness_n be_v mingle_v with_o much_o corruption_n through_o want_n of_o mercy_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o understand_v it_o of_o the_o measure_n of_o forgiveness_n nor_o yet_o of_o the_o manner_n simple_o but_o especial_o of_o the_o very_a act_n of_o forgive_a and_o the_o force_n of_o the_o reason_n stand_v thus_o if_o we_o who_o have_v but_o a_o drop_n of_o mercy_n forgive_v other_o then_o do_v thou_o who_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o mercy_n forgive_v we_o understand_v further_o that_o a_o man_n forgive_v a_o trespass_n only_o as_o it_o be_v a_o damage_n unto_o man_n but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o god_n in_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o on_o himself_o but_o on_o all_o his_o posterity_n mortality_n and_o destruction_n the_o first_o and_o second_o death_n 2._o let_v we_o consider_v our_o sin_n in_o the_o punishment_n thereof_o that_o be_v subjection_n to_o all_o woe_n and_o misery_n yea_o and_o to_o death_n itself_o in_o this_o life_n and_o to_o death_n eternal_a after_o this_o life_n with_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o angel_n this_o be_v the_o reward_n of_o every_o sin_n in_o itself_o 3._o consider_v these_o thy_o sin_n as_o they_o be_v lay_v on_o the_o holy_a person_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n which_o he_o endure_v excellency_n of_o god_n gift_n 7._o if_o our_o work_n shall_v merit_v christ_n shall_v not_o be_v a_o perfect_a saviour_n nor_o heaven_n purchase_v for_o we_o by_o his_o blood_n only_o which_o now_o mingle_v evil_a with_o the_o good_a we_o shall_v do_v or_o we_o do_v good_a but_o we_o do_v it_o ill_o the_o thing_n do_v may_v be_v good_a but_o not_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v it_o 3._o the_o saint_n which_o do_v good_a work_n do_v many_o thing_n which_o be_v sin_n in_o themselves_o and_o so_o deserve_v to_o be_v out_v of_o god_n favour_n deut._n 27.26_o 4._o because_o there_o be_v not_o that_o degree_n of_o goodness_n in_o these_o good_a work_n that_o proceed_v from_o the_o saint_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v or_o as_o god_n require_v 2._o though_o they_o be_v perfect_a yet_o be_v they_o due_a and_o debt_n so_o that_o we_o can_v satisfy_v by_o they_o 3._o they_o be_v temporary_a and_o bear_v not_o proportion_n with_o eternal_a blessing_n 4._o they_o be_v effect_n of_o justification_n therefore_o no_o cause_n thereof_o 5._o they_o be_v exclude_v that_o we_o may_v not_o have_v whereof_o to_o glory_v 6._o if_o they_o be_v part_n of_o our_o justification_n our_o conscience_n shall_v be_v destitute_a of_o stable_n and_o certain_a comfort_n 7._o christ_n shall_v have_v dye_v in_o vain_a and_o have_v rise_v in_o vain_a not_o to_o our_o justification_n if_o we_o can_v have_v be_v from_o faith_n as_o those_o of_o the_o regenerate_v do_v 2._o the_o work_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a be_v not_o join_v with_o a_o inward_a obedience_n and_o therefore_o be_v do_v dissemble_o and_o be_v mere_a hypocrisy_n but_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o with_o the_o regenerate_v 3._o as_o the_o work_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a proceed_v not_o from_o the_o right_a cause_n so_o be_v they_o not_o refer_v to_o the_o chief_a end_n which_o be_v god_n glory_n but_o in_o both_o these_o the_o work_n of_o the_o regenerate_v be_v right_o and_o true_o qualify_v though_o the_o work_n of_o the_o most_o regenerate_v yea_o his_o best_a work_n be_v good_a only_o in_o part_n not_o perfect_o because_o he_o be_v not_o whole_o spirit_n and_o no_o flesh_n yet_o god_n approve_v of_o they_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v again_o consider_v good_a work_v two_o way_n viz._n 1._o in_o themselves_o as_o they_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o law_n and_o the_o rigour_n thereof_o and_o so_o they_o be_v sin_n because_o they_o answer_v not_o to_o that_o perfection_n which_o the_o law_n require_v for_o there_o be_v two_o degree_n of_o sin_n viz._n 1._o rebellion_n which_o be_v action_n flat_o against_o the_o law_n 2._o defect_n when_o a_o man_n do_v those_o thing_n the_o law_n command_v but_o fail_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v and_o so_o man_n best_a work_n be_v sin_n 2._o as_o they_o be_v do_v by_o a_o
