assure_v and_o comfort_v m._n this_o baptism_n serve_v then_o better_a for_o they_o than_o for_o their_o child_n forsomuch_o as_o the_o child_n know_v not_o yet_o what_o it_o be_v p._n it_o serve_v spirit_n and_o a_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a essence_n without_o beginning_n and_o end_v and_o will_v be_v serve_v in_o spirit_n and_o in_o verity_n with_o such_o service_n as_o be_v agreeable_a with_o his_o nature_n and_o majesty_n we_o may_v then_o well_o know_v that_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o law_n which_o be_v divine_a &_o that_o of_o man_n law_n and_o that_o he_o be_v not_o content_v to_o have_v it_o in_o such_o sort_n observe_v as_o man_n be_v content_v to_o have_v they_o observe_v of_o the_o difference_n that_o be_v between_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o law_n of_o man_n and_o the_o thing_n require_v in_o these_o same_o and_o of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n concern_v the_o same_o t._n show_v i_o then_o what_o be_v the_o difference_n d._n man_n be_v content_v if_o that_o by_o outward_a work_n their_o commandment_n be_v observe_v and_o that_o there_o appear_v unto_o they_o nothing_o to_o be_v do_v against_o they_o but_o they_o can_v not_o deal_v with_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o thought_n because_o they_o be_v unknown_a to_o they_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o they_o be_v declare_v outward_o on_o the_o other_o side_n albeit_o that_o they_o be_v declare_v outward_o yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o do_v not_o condemn_v they_o and_o punish_v they_o continual_o nor_o many_o outward_a work_n also_o although_o they_o be_v very_o wicked_a t._n how_o may_v that_o be_v d._n as_o well_o because_o that_o man_n for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v content_v to_o entertain_v the_o society_n of_o man_n in_o a_o certain_a worldly_a peace_n and_o tranquillity_n as_o also_o that_o they_o think_v not_o oftentimes_o that_o to_o be_v evil_n which_o be_v evil_a or_o if_o they_o esteem_v it_o to_o be_v evil_n they_o think_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o great_a as_o it_o be_v or_o if_o they_o think_v it_o to_o be_v great_a they_o do_v maintain_v it_o t._n and_o from_o whence_o come_v this_o fault_n daniel_n it_o do_v partly_o proceed_v of_o ignorance_n and_o
blindness_n that_o sin_n have_v engender_v in_o the_o understanding_n of_o man_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o he_o can_v so_o well_o discern_v the_o good_a from_o the_o evil_a nor_o judge_v of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o as_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v if_o he_o have_v continue_v in_o the_o state_n of_o innocence_n and_o grace_n in_o the_o which_o he_o be_v create_v beside_o that_o there_o be_v this_o other_o great_a mischief_n that_o man_n do_v willing_o support_v that_o wherein_o he_o will_v himself_o be_v support_v and_o that_o he_o never_o have_v so_o great_a care_n for_o that_o which_o concern_v the_o honour_n of_o god_n as_o for_o that_o which_o concern_v his_o own_o body_n it_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o man_n do_v rather_o punish_v yea_o and_o that_o more_o gréevouse_o those_o fault_n which_o touch_v their_o honour_n or_o dishonour_n or_o their_o profit_n or_o hindrance_n than_o they_o do_v those_o which_o make_v war_n direct_o against_o the_o honour_n and_o majesty_n of_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o god_n for_o he_o be_v not_o content_v with_o the_o only_a work_n that_o appear_v outward_o but_o he_o require_v the_o heart_n and_o behold_v the_o fountain_n from_o whence_o the_o work_v spring_v which_o can_v not_o please_v he_o how_o fair_a a_o show_n so_o ever_o it_o have_v but_o only_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o proceed_v from_o the_o heart_n and_o that_o the_o heart_n do_v please_v he_o the_o which_o in_o deed_n can_v in_o no_o wise_a please_v he_o but_o so_o farforth_o as_o he_o do_v draw_v near_o to_o his_o nature_n and_o that_o he_o be_v reform_v and_o make_v new_a like_o to_o his_o image_n and_o regenerate_v by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n for_o there_o be_v no_o work_n good_a nor_o pleasant_a to_o god_n but_o that_o which_o proceed_v from_o he_o and_o that_o he_o himself_o do_v 4._o for_o even_o as_o there_o be_v none_o good_a but_o only_o he_o so_o be_v there_o no_o good_a thing_n but_o that_o which_o proceed_v from_o he_o alone_o therefore_o the_o work_n which_o proceed_v from_o we_o can_v not_o please_v he_o but_o so_o far_o as_o he_o work_v in_o we_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o that_o our_o spirit_n be_v govern_v by_o he_o for_o he_o which_o be_v a_o spirit_n be_v then_o serve_v by_o his_o like_a in_o what_o sort_n the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n ought_v to_o be_v understand_v and_o how_o that_o god_n do_v not_o only_o behold_v the_o outward_a work_n but_o the_o original_n of_o they_o also_o &_o what_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n do_v allow_v or_o condemn_v in_o man._n t._n so_o far_o forth_o as_o i_o may_v understand_v by_o thy_o word_n that_o law_n do_v well_o deserve_v to_o be_v otherwise_o weigh_v and_o consider_v of_o than_o it_o be_v d._n it_o be_v even_o so_o for_o when_o god_n do_v require_v of_o we_o a_o thing_n that_o seem_v to_o belong_v to_o the_o outward_n work_n we_o ought_v to_o understand_v the_o whole_a by_o a_o part_n and_o the_o cause_n by_o the_o effect_n and_o the_o root_n and_o the_o whole_a herb_n by_o the_o fruit_n and_o the_o workman_n by_o the_o work_n and_o all_o the_o circumstance_n and_o dependence_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o note_n and_o when_o he_o forbid_v a_o thing_n we_o must_v also_o know_v that_o he_o command_v his_o contrary_n and_o likewise_o when_o he_o command_v he_o forbid_v the_o contrary_a of_o that_o which_o he_o command_v for_o he_o behold_v man_n thorough_o both_o endlong_a and_o overthwart_o and_o do_v sound_v the_o heart_n and_o all_o the_o thought_n and_o affection_n of_o he_o and_o allow_v nothing_o in_o he_o but_o that_o which_o he_o find_v to_o be_v he_o and_o have_v himself_o command_v and_o disallow_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o man_n have_v receive_v of_o other_o than_o of_o consider_v as_o command_v or_o forbid_v by_o god._n d._n see_v then_o that_o he_o which_o be_v the_o workman_n and_o have_v frame_v &_o make_v the_o substance_n itself_o whereof_o he_o be_v fashion_v and_o that_o he_o himself_o be_v the_o giver_n of_o the_o fashion_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o that_o he_o do_v very_o well_o know_v all_o that_o ever_o be_v in_o he_o and_o that_o which_o he_o have_v of_o his_o own_o put_v into_o he_o and_o what_o man_n have_v of_o other_o to_o destroy_v his_o work_n we_o must_v therefore_o note_v here_o that_o there_o be_v in_o we_o four_o thing_n that_o can_v not_o please_v god_n and_o every_o of_o they_o do_v in_o his_o behalf_n deserve_v death_n and_o eternal_a damnation_n now_o if_o any_o one_o of_o they_o be_v take_v apart_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o separate_v they_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o be_v so_o abominable_a of_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o worthy_a of_o so_o grievous_a punyshement_fw-mi what_o may_v it_o then_o be_v when_o they_o be_v all_o join_v together_o t._n there_o must_v needs_o be_v much_o filthiness_n but_o which_o be_v these_o thing_n man._n d._n first_o there_o be_v concupiscence_n for_o the_o second_o the_o affection_n beget_v of_o he_o for_o the_o three_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o will_n to_o this_o affection_n for_o the_o four_o the_o execution_n of_o the_o same_o by_o deed_n but_o i_o will_v begin_v my_o declaration_n by_o this_o last_o which_o be_v to_o say_v by_o the_o work_n that_o appear_v outward_o to_o the_o end_n that_o by_o the_o same_o we_o may_v have_v the_o better_a understanding_n of_o the_o other_o thing_n that_o do_v go_v before_o which_o be_v more_o hide_v and_o more_o secret_a in_o this_o point_n i_o will_v begin_v by_o the_o most_o apparent_a and_o open_a fruit_n whereby_o we_o easy_o judge_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o tree_n for_o in_o set_v forth_o first_o the_o work_n the_o workman_n shall_v not_o only_o be_v know_v thereby_o but_o also_o the_o forge_n and_o shop_n wherein_o that_o work_n have_v be_v wrought_v as_o concern_v the_o work_n we_o ought_v to_o consider_v it_o first_o two_o way_n the_o one_o as_o command_v of_o god_n the_o other_o as_o forbid_v by_o he_o that_o which_o be_v command_v by_o god_n can_v never_o be_v evil_a be_v understand_v in_o that_o sense_n and_o meaning_n that_o he_o have_v command_v it_o and_o be_v apply_v to_o that_o end_n that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v on_o the_o other_o side_n that_o which_o he_o have_v forbid_v be_v weigh_v in_o the_o same_o sort_n may_v never_o in_o any_o wise_a be_v good_a by_o what_o rule_n the_o work_n of_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v examine_v and_o how_o dangerous_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o follow_v the_o judgement_n of_o man_n reason_n t._n we_o ought_v then_o to_o be_v well_o advise_v and_o to_o take_v good_a heed_n how_o we_o do_v establish_v judgement_n upon_o man_n reason_n and_o upon_o the_o opinion_n of_o man_n in_o such_o matter_n d._n it_o be_v very_o true_a for_o it_o be_v often_o time_n see_v that_o man_n judge_v that_o good_a which_o be_v evil_a and_o do_v disallow_v that_o which_o god_n allow_v and_o allow_v that_o which_o he_o disallow_v for_o the_o cause_n before_o mention_v for_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n the_o sentence_n shall_v not_o be_v give_v according_a to_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n reason_n and_o of_o the_o opinion_n of_o man_n but_o according_a to_o the_o pronunciation_n which_o god_n have_v already_o pronounce_v by_o his_o word_n and_o by_o his_o law_n which_o shall_v be_v the_o weight_n the_o balance_n and_o the_o rule_n wherein_o and_o whereby_o all_o the_o thought_n word_n and_o
work_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v weigh_v and_o measure_v how_o that_o the_o la_o of_o god_n be_v transgress_v not_o only_o in_o do_v that_o which_o be_v forbid_v by_o it_o but_o also_o in_o leving_fw-mi that_o undo_n which_o be_v therein_o command_v and_o how_o that_o those_o good_a work_n which_o we_o do_v be_v not_o able_a to_o satisfy_v for_o they_o which_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v and_o do_v not_o ne_o yet_o for_o those_o which_o we_o do_v against_o the_o will_n of_o god._n t._n then_o do_v it_o follow_v that_o whosoever_o shall_v do_v that_o which_o shall_v be_v forbid_v of_o god_n or_o shall_v leave_v undo_v that_o which_o he_o do_v command_v he_o the_o same_o deserve_v condemnation_n on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o that_o shall_v abstain_v from_o that_o which_o he_o have_v forbid_v and_o shall_v do_v that_o which_o he_o have_v command_v the_o same_o shall_v receive_v the_o praise_n and_o commendation_n of_o a_o good_a &_o faithful_a servant_n effect_n d._n these_o two_o point_n that_o thou_o touch_v be_v right_o well_o worthy_a to_o be_v note_v for_o there_o be_v some_o that_o think_v that_o they_o have_v sufficient_o fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n if_o that_o they_o have_v refrain_v from_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v therein_o forbid_v yea_o and_o if_o it_o have_v be_v do_v but_o only_o in_o outward_a appearance_n without_o lay_v of_o hand_n with_o a_o prompt_a courage_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v command_v they_o on_o the_o other_o side_n there_o be_v other_o which_o think_v that_o they_o may_v the_o more_fw-it lawful_o dispense_v with_o themselves_o to_o do_v many_o thing_n that_o be_v forbid_v in_o the_o law_n when_o they_o have_v do_v some_o little_a portion_n of_o those_o which_o be_v command_v and_o think_v these_o to_o be_v a_o recompense_n for_o the_o other_o but_o we_o must_v needs_o walk_v in_o all_o other_o manner_n of_o simplicity_n before_o god_n &_o must_v put_v in_o use_n that_o which_o jesus_n christ_n have_v say_v it_o behove_v to_o do_v this_o and_o not_o to_o leave_v the_o other_o undo_v place_n for_o here_o it_o ought_v to_o have_v better_a place_n than_o in_o any_o where_o else_o it_o behove_v to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v command_v and_o to_o refrain_v from_o that_o which_o be_v forbid_v for_o he_o that_o command_v and_o he_o that_o forbid_v be_v always_o one_o lord_n who_o will_v not_o suffer_v his_o majesty_n to_o be_v more_o dishonour_v of_o the_o one_o part_n than_o of_o the_o other_o therefore_o when_o thou_o do_v some_o part_n of_o that_o which_o be_v command_v thou_o think_v not_o by_o that_o little_a how_o that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o do_v outward_o the_o work_n which_o god_n command_v if_o that_o they_o be_v not_o do_v to_o the_o intent_n and_o to_o the_o very_a same_o purpose_n for_o the_o which_o god_n do_v command_v they_o &_o how_o great_o hypocrisy_n displease_v god._n d._n on_o the_o other_o part_n out_o when_o thou_o do_v the_o work_n which_o god_n command_v thou_o must_v take_v good_a heed_n to_o what_o end_n thou_o do_v it_o and_o with_o what_o mind_n for_o if_o thou_o do_v it_o more_o for_o thine_o own_o glory_n and_o profit_n &_o for_o thine_o own_o behoof_n than_o thou_o do_v for_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o for_o the_o love_n thou_o bear_v to_o he_o or_o to_o thy_o neighbour_n for_o his_o sake_n thou_o make_v of_o a_o good_a work_n a_o evil_a work_n and_o do_v great_o offend_v he_o through_o thy_o hypocrisy_n abuse_v his_o name_n &_o make_v a_o mask_n of_o his_o law_n to_o serve_v thou_o and_o thy_o wicked_a affection_n and_o therefore_o such_o a_o work_n be_v no_o more_o a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o so_o much_o as_o it_o be_v not_o do_v in_o truth_n but_o in_o lie_n for_o all_o hypocrisy_n be_v lie_n for_o somuch_o as_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o falsehood_n feign_v and_o dissimulation_n which_o have_v a_o other_o show_n outward_o than_o the_o troth_n of_o the_o thing_n have_v inward_o now_o all_o lie_n proceed_v from_o the_o devil_n the_o work_n then_o which_o be_v do_v in_o lie_n be_v of_o the_o devil_n and_o not_o of_o god_n wherefore_o it_o can_v much_o better_o please_v god_n than_o do_v the_o troth_n which_o the_o devil_n speak_v to_o cover_v his_o lie_n with_o and_o to_o transfigure_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n and_o that_o all_o the_o work_n do_v that_o ever_o he_o do_v how_o fair_a a_o show_n so_o ever_o they_o have_v although_o god_n do_v make_v they_o serve_v to_o his_o glory_n for_o his_o intent_n be_v always_o wicked_a forsomuch_o as_o he_o never_o do_v thing_n but_o for_o himself_o and_o have_v regard_n neither_o to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n nor_o to_o the_o profit_n of_o any_o creature_n wherefore_o he_o be_v never_o more_o perilous_a than_o when_o he_o have_v the_o great_a show_n of_o well_o do_v for_o than_o it_o be_v that_o he_o do_v most_o dishonour_n god_n and_o do_v great_a hurt_n to_o man_n because_o he_o be_v more_o cover_v and_o disguise_v &_o they_o only_o to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n what_o good_a or_o hurt_v the_o work_n do_v that_o be_v outward_o do_v &_o not_o with_o a_o good_a heart_n &_o what_o it_o may_v bring_v to_o the_o worker_n of_o the_o same_o &_o also_o to_o other_o and_o whether_o it_o be_v better_a that_o it_o be_v do_v or_o undo_v t._n if_o the_o matter_n be_v such_o that_o the_o work_n itself_o which_o god_n command_v can_v please_v he_o if_o it_o do_v not_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o heart_n as_o he_o require_v but_o do_v rather_o displease_v he_o it_o follow_v then_o that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v not_o such_o a_o heart_n he_o do_v not_o only_o lose_v his_o time_n in_o do_v of_o such_o a_o work_n but_o he_o do_v also_o purchase_v to_o himself_o a_o more_o great_a judgement_n d._n there_o be_v also_o two_o point_n to_o be_v consider_v in_o this_o matter_n if_o that_o the_o man_n that_o do_v this_o work_n do_v it_o thorough_o of_o a_o very_a malice_n and_o to_o such_o end_n as_o the_o devil_n do_v he_o to_o wit_n to_o dishonour_n god_n and_o to_o deceive_v man_n and_o to_o hurt_v his_o neighbour_n it_o be_v much_o better_a that_o he_o do_v nothing_o at_o all_o for_o his_o work_n can_v do_v but_o hurt_v and_o more_o to_o himself_o than_o to_o any_o other_o if_o he_o do_v it_o not_o in_o deed_n for_o so_o evil_a a_o purpose_n but_o only_o to_o have_v some_o worldly_a honour_n or_o profit_n the_o work_n be_v then_o yet_o somewhat_o more_o profitable_a in_o sundry_a sort_n as_o well_o to_o himself_o as_o to_o other_o according_a to_o the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o same_o than_o if_o it_o have_v not_o be_v do_v at_o all_o or_o else_o if_o he_o have_v do_v those_o work_n which_o god_n have_v forbid_v for_o first_o of_o all_o those_o that_o see_v such_o a_o work_n be_v edify_v in_o somuch_o as_o they_o see_v it_o to_o be_v good_a of_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o do_v think_v that_o it_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o heart_n as_o it_o show_v for_o outward_o on_o the_o other_o if_o it_o be_v a_o work_n whereby_o thy_o neighbour_n receive_v any_o comfort_n or_o help_v in_o his_o person_n it_o be_v then_o so_o much_o the_o more_o profitable_a wherefore_o albeit_o that_o the_o work_n be_v not_o such_o as_o god_n require_v yet_o forsomuch_o as_o it_o serve_v somewhat_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o to_o the_o edification_n of_o our_o neighbour_n god_n be_v so_o good_a that_o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v it_o to_o be_v unrecompensed_a t._n what_o recompense_n will_v he_o then_o give_v he_o d._n that_o which_o the_o worker_n require_v he_o desire_v glory_n among_o
