other_o reason_n but_o that_o they_o love_v to_o be_v so_o and_o nothing_o more_o often_o occur_v about_o which_o they_o may_v be_v so_o than_o what_o other_o man_n be_v or_o do_v sect._n iii_o three_o the_o three_o cause_n be_v sometime_o curiosity_n that_o be_v a_o man_n please_a himself_n mere_o and_o ultimate_o in_o know_v something_o he_o do_v not_o know_v before_o and_o be_v very_o much_o conceit_v of_o himself_o there_o for_o not_o direct_v his_o knowledge_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v most_o profitable_a which_o he_o can_v make_v best_o use_v of_o do_v most_o good_a understand_v and_o direct_v ourselves_o by_o use_v our_o mind_n to_o wander_v abroad_o and_o to_o attend_v to_o other_o and_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o opportunity_n of_o self-reflection_n it_o be_v very_o often_o see_v that_o those_o who_o be_v extraordinary_a forward_o not_o out_o of_o some_o sense_n of_o duty_n to_o give_v counsel_n advice_n or_o judgement_n of_o other_o man_n concern_v be_v very_o negligent_a and_o careless_a and_o unapt_a to_o follow_v the_o very_a same_o when_o it_o be_v as_o useful_a and_o profitable_a for_o themselves_o sect._n v._n second_o for_o some_o of_o the_o cause_n of_o too_o great_a a_o proneness_n to_o judge_n on_o the_o worst_a side_n whether_o true_o or_o false_o but_o not_o therefore_o or_o because_o they_o be_v true_a or_o false_a in_o ourselves_o they_o be_v all_o either_o ignorance_n or_o some_o ill-disposition_n of_o will._n 1._o ignorance_n viz._n of_o the_o bad_a effect_n or_o consequence_n of_o this_o our_o too_o great_a proneness_n which_o ignorance_n may_v proceed_v from_o ill-disposition_n of_o will_n either_o on_o set_a purpose_n or_o design_v then_o when_o we_o judge_v and_o we_o wilful_o shut_v our_o eye_n and_o do_v not_o attend_v to_o what_o may_v better_o inform_v we_o or_o it_o may_v be_v contract_v before_o but_o it_o may_v proceed_v too_o sometime_o even_o from_o love_n and_o charity_n so_o we_o see_v sometime_o person_n much_o desirous_a of_o their_o relation_n or_o other_o good_a and_o welfare_n very_o apt_a always_o to_o suspect_v the_o worse_a of_o they_o and_o to_o observe_v their_o beginning_n bad_a inclination_n and_o to_o think_v they_o so_o but_o not_o so_o much_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o contrary_a good_a one_o in_o they_o and_o this_o partly_o that_o they_o may_v timely_o prevent_v any_o evil_n that_o may_v happen_v to_o they_o thereby_o and_o so_o may_v it_o be_v in_o public_a affair_n and_o of_o very_o great_a and_o universal_a concernment_n especial_o and_o yet_o soon_o out_o of_o our_o power_n nay_o so_o we_o see_v it_o in_o ourselves_o sometime_o some_o man_n be_v too_o apt_a to_o look_v upon_o their_o fault_n and_o imperfection_n and_o to_o magnify_v they_o and_o to_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o what_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o and_o consequent_o to_o judge_n false_o concern_v themselves_o on_o the_o worst_a side_n though_o this_o be_v but_o rare_a in_o compare_n with_o the_o other_o extreme_a and_o proceed_v from_o a_o imprudent_a and_o ignorant_a love_n not_o attend_v that_o they_o ought_v and_o may_v do_v themselves_o as_o much_o good_a by_o their_o be_v please_v with_o and_o encourage_v by_o and_o thankful_a for_o the_o good_a they_o have_v as_o by_o be_v afraid_a of_o removing_z and_o prevent_v any_o evil_n fall_v upon_o they_o or_o that_o may_v allowable_a or_o that_o it_o do_v any_o good_a more_o than_o the_o gratification_n of_o the_o proud_a person_n to_o affect_v to_o be_v superior_a in_o some_o excellent_a and_o useful_a quality_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n sometime_o of_o a_o man_n excel_v therein_o and_o consequent_o of_o some_o good_a effect_n but_o it_o be_v not_o because_o he_o affect_v superiority_n that_o be_v not_o the_o precise_a cause_n but_o because_o that_o superiority_n happen_v to_o be_v in_o a_o excellent_a thing_n and_o yet_o more_o particular_o 2._o envy_n a_o kind_n of_o this_o affectation_n of_o superiority_n not_o the_o passion_n so_o much_o that_o be_v a_o desire_n of_o deprive_v other_o of_o any_o good_a they_o possess_v which_o we_o have_v not_o as_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v too_o in_o the_o foregoing_a cause_n of_o hatred_n and_o revenge_n but_o the_o cause_n or_o principle_n of_o our_o be_v prone_a to_o this_o passion_n that_o be_v please_v ourselves_o ultimate_o that_o we_o have_v some_o good_a thing_n which_o other_o have_v not_o and_o be_v very_o glad_a they_o have_v they_o not_o and_o sorry_a and_o grieve_a if_o they_o have_v they_o and_o this_o make_v we_o to_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o judge_n but_o those_o that_o shall_v serve_v for_o that_o side_n or_o the_o cause_n that_o they_o be_v bribe_v for_o and_o yet_o often_o our_o mind_n and_o reason_n the_o other_o account_n it_o be_v a_o special_a maxim_n of_o wisdom_n not_o to_o trust_v those_o judgement_n where_o passion_n have_v go_v before_o reason_n but_o do_v one_o of_o these_o three_o thing_n diminish_v his_o commendable_a quality_n by_o conceal_v or_o extenuate_v they_o and_o on_o the_o contrary_a when_o a_o author_n be_v now_o outdo_v and_o think_v to_o be_v much_o exceed_v by_o another_o and_o therefore_o comparative_o undervalue_v they_o endeavour_v to_o
multiply_v and_o magnify_v what_o be_v good_a and_o deserve_a in_o he_o but_o to_o neglect_v conceal_v or_o lessen_v what_o be_v bad_a and_o defective_a and_o consequent_o by_o this_o unobserved_a prejudice_n they_o give_v false_a judgement_n concern_v they_o i_o know_v these_o instance_n may_v proceed_v from_o a_o careful_a veracity_n and_o justice_n because_o man_n common_o both_o praise_n and_o dispraise_v excessive_o and_o their_o judgement_n may_v be_v true_a but_o it_o be_v more_o rare_a even_o to_o have_v any_o thing_n thereof_o but_o much_o more_o rare_a still_o to_o see_v this_o without_o some_o mixture_n of_o the_o other_o cause_n and_o here_o we_o may_v just_o take_v notice_n of_o one_o reason_n of_o the_o aptness_n of_o man_n to_o recriminate_a to_o accuse_v their_o it_o be_v apparent_a they_o know_v little_a of_o the_o circumstance_n of_o their_o condition_n or_o affair_n and_o these_o can_v reasonable_o be_v think_v to_o be_v

than_o our_o time_n be_v to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o then_o indeed_o not_o to_o be_v too_o intent_n to_o our_o own_o business_n and_o through_o surliness_n or_o carelessness_n of_o our_o neighbour_n occasion_n and_o temptation_n to_o other_o of_o dislike_n hatred_n contempt_n anger_n or_o revenge_n against_o we_o and_o that_o by_o a_o unreasonable_a severity_n in_o their_o judge_n of_o we_o magistrate_n minister_n those_o who_o have_v the_o education_n of_o youth_n master_n of_o family_n all_o these_o will_v do_v ill_a if_o they_o do_v not_o take_v notice_n and_o judge_v concern_v the_o temper_n and_o behaviour_n of_o their_o subject_n people_n youth_n child_n and_o servant_n as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v without_o too_o much_o neglect_v of_o themselves_o or_o other_o worse_a effect_n again_o there_o be_v some_o that_o observe_v other_o to_o very_o good_a use_n and_o purpose_n what_o be_v good_a they_o
have_v all_o circumstance_n consider_v that_o be_v rashness_n or_o temerity_n in_o judge_v and_o when_o it_o be_v on_o the_o worst_a side_n to_o condemn_v any_o person_n it_o be_v now_o usual_o call_v rash_a censure_n of_o the_o first_o of_o these_o there_o be_v no_o degree_n or_o difference_n but_o it_o be_v perpetual_o in_o all_o person_n at_o all_o time_n forbid_v for_o if_o there_o appear_v no_o reason_n at_o all_o to_o we_o why_o we_o shall_v judge_v one_o or_o other_o way_n we_o be_v to_o suspend_v our_o judgement_n that_o which_o be_v usual_o express_v by_o say_v we_o do_v not_o know_v we_o can_v tell_v it_o may_v or_o it_o may_v not_o be_v so_o indeed_o if_o we_o apprehend_v the_o possibility_n but_o whether_o it_o be_v or_o be_v not_o we_o be_v ignorant_a in_o our_o such_o as_o be_v natural_a and_o bear_v with_o we_o and_o which_o we_o can_v oppress_v or_o hinder_v by_o our_o will_n though_o we_o will_v and_o we_o do_v not_o find_v they_o proceed_v from_o any_o insincerity_n any_o secret_a desire_n or_o inclination_n to_o gratify_v any_o lust_n but_o that_o we_o be_v possess_v with_o a_o serious_a and_o upright_o unmix_a desire_n to_o know_v the_o truth_n in_o order_n to_o goodness_n and_o this_o indeed_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o great_a reason_n for_o that_o judgement_n viz._n of_o this_o inclination_n be_v impress_v by_o god_n and_o consequent_o he_o be_v good_a that_o it_o be_v true_a and_o useful_a such_o be_v man_n strong_a inclination_n notwithstanding_o all_o appearance_n of_o reason_n though_o but_o such_o and_z and_z real_a deceit_n to_o the_o contrary_a which_o may_v be_v bring_v by_o cavil_v man_n to_o believe_v god_n existence_n his_o justice_n to_o punish_v and_o reward_v immortality_n of_o soul_n distinction_n of_o action_n right_a and_o wrong_n universal_a goodness_n our_o great_a perfection_n and_o ultimate_a self-love_n contrary_a to_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o sense_n etc._n etc._n these_o call_v antipathy_n and_o ofttimes_o past_a offence_n etc._n etc._n of_o the_o other_o viz._n judge_v without_o sufficient_a reason_n there_o be_v variety_n that_o which_o may_v be_v sufficient_a reason_n to_o one_o man_n or_o at_o one_o time_n in_o one_o thing_n may_v not_o be_v to_o another_o one_o man_n may_v be_v more_o capable_a and_o able_a to_o examine_v a_o thing_n further_o than_o another_o and_o yet_o both_o may_v be_v aught_o to_o pass_v their_o judgement_n as_o if_o one_o friend_n shall_v for_o very_o good_a end_n ask_v the_o judgement_n of_o some_o other_o concern_v the_o quality_n or_o action_n of_o a_o three_o so_o sometime_o the_o time_n for_o deliberation_n or_o information_n may_v be_v necessary_o short_a in_o one_o affair_n than_o in_o another_o and_o yet_o the_o opinion_n too_o may_v be_v with_o less_o reason_n or_o probability_n than_o another_o of_o great_a importance_n and_o here_o this_o rash_a judgement_n be_v not_o to_o be_v allow_v on_o either_o side_n as_o well_o to_o the_o advantage_n as_o disadvantage_n of_o the_o person_n concern_v his_o good_a or_o his_o ill-quality_n or_o action_n we_o be_v not_o to_o judge_n man_n better_o than_o they_o be_v as_o well_o as_o not_o worse_o and_o consequent_o false_o and_o foolish_o admire_v and_o approve_v of_o what_o they_o say_v or_o do_v without_o reason_n only_o because_o we_o will_v and_o as_o we_o say_v we_o imagine_v so_o not_o with_o that_o sufficient_a reason_n as_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v though_o the_o extreme_a of_o judge_a man_n rash_o better_a than_o they_o be_v be_v less_o frequent_a or_o understanding_n we_o much_o please_v ourselves_o that_o we_o can_v observe_v what_o other_o do_v and_o judge_v and_o discern_v whether_o they_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a do_v well_o or_o ill_o especial_o what_o the_o most_o considerable_a man_n do_v and_o here_o most_o because_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o great_a comparative_a ability_n that_o we_o see_v imperfection_n and_o defect_n even_o in_o the_o wise_a and_o better_a sort_n of_o man_n which_o they_o do_v not_o as_o we_o think_v see_v in_o themselves_o the_o first_o of_o these_o cause_n be_v more_o ordinary_a the_o second_o iu._n 4._o the_o four_o thing_n forbid_v be_v false_a judgement_n which_o although_o it_o may_v be_v more_o hurtful_a in_o effect_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v and_o often_o be_v more_o innocent_a in_o the_o principle_n or_o end_n than_o the_o former_a for_o a_o man_n may_v often_o judge_v false_a and_o out_o of_o charity_n and_o duty_n too_o and_o with_o as_o sufficient_a reason_n as_o he_o can_v find_v or_o observe_v but_o yet_o a_o man_n have_v first_o see_v he_o may_v or_o aught_o to_o pass_v his_o judgement_n aught_o to_o adhibit_v the_o great_a care_n that_o it_o be_v true_a this_o be_v there_o be_v none_o or_o not_o so_o many_o when_o we_o mistake_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o number_n second_o when_o we_o judge_v more_o of_o that_o which_o be_v a_o great_a degree_n and_o a_o great_a constancy_n of_o these_o imperfection_n which_o real_o be_v in_o the_o person_n to_o be_v in_o the_o person_n than_o there_o be_v we_o mistake_v in_o the_o degree_n and_o in_o the_o continuation_n or_o duration_n and_o thus_o on_o the_o contrary_a also_o we_o often_o judge_v as_o rash_o and_o false_o of_o ourselves_o or_o any_o we_o favour_n or_o who_o be_v friend_n to_o we_o we_o judge_v perfection_n and_o good_a quality_n to_o be_v in_o ourselves_o and_o they_o and_o more_o of_o these_o perfection_n in_o number_n and_o they_o to_o be_v great_a and_o more_o of_o each_o of_o they_o in_o degree_n and_o frequency_n or_o constancy_n than_o indeed_o there_o be_v when_o all_o this_o be_v a_o mistake_n and_o oft_o a_o silly_a or_o wilful_a one_o and_o on_o the_o contrary_n judge_v we_o and_o our_o friend_n imperfection_n and_o and_o their_o degree_n of_o intention_n and_o frequency_n few_o and_o the_o imperfection_n less_o than_o indeed_o they_o be_v and_o
consequent_o be_v well_o please_v to_o hear_v of_o his_o fault_n or_o imperfection_n a_o man_n may_v use_v out_o of_o flattery_n so_o often_o to_o tell_v his_o judgement_n to_o the_o disadvantage_n of_o a_o person_n that_o at_o last_o he_o may_v unawar_n come_v to_o believe_v it_o himself_o and_o partly_o that_o his_o flattery_n may_v not_o at_o any_o time_n be_v discover_v oblige_v himself_o especial_o declare_v once_o judgement_n and_o opinion_n on_o the_o advantageous_a side_n i._n e._n that_o a_o man_n have_v more_o of_o some_o good_a thing_n than_o indeed_o he_o have_v to_o proceed_v from_o some_o of_o the_o same_o cause_n too_o viz._n hatred_n envy_n indignation_n for_o example_n that_o a_o man_n have_v more_o revenue_n treasure_n honour_n power_n ease_n pleasure_n than_o indeed_o he_o have_v only_o to_o expose_v he_o more_o to_o the_o envy_n or_o indignation_n of_o other_o and_o in_o general_a man_n judge_v thus_o in_o a_o thing_n which_o they_o account_v a_o reward_n to_o he_o who_o they_o think_v do_v not_o or_o they_o will_v not_o have_v he_o either_o to_o merit_v or_o receive_v it_o most_o common_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n from_o circumstance_n to_o discern_v from_o what_o principle_n such_o judgement_n proceed_v but_o some_o may_v be_v so_o cunning_a as_o to_o conceal_v or_o dissemble_v sect._n vii_o seven_o for_o the_o cause_n of_o rash_a judgement_n and_o censure_n they_o must_v be_v the_o same_o with_o those_o of_o the_o two_o former_a particular_n the_o cause_n of_o rash_a judgement_n in_o general_n idleness_n busibodiness_n activity_n curiosity_n pride_n and_o of_o rash_a censure_n or_o judgement_n without_o reason_n but_o a_o man_n be_v own_o will_n on_o the_o worst_a side_n as_o such_o be_v among_o other_o hatred_n revenge_n pride_n affectation_n of_o superiority_n envy_n contempt_n flattery_n to_o which_o we_o may_v add_v anger_n and_o wrath_n which_o if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o very_o careful_a dispose_v we_o to_o as_o much_o uncharitable_a and_o unreasonable_a judge_v as_o the_o former_a and_o a_o man_n be_v seldom_o or_o never_o to_o trust_v his_o judgement_n of_o any_o person_n after_o that_o fierce_a and_o confound_a passion_n but_o refer_v it_o to_o another_o time_n when_o calmness_n and_o freedom_n from_o passion_n give_v he_o more_o ability_n to_o see_v the_o truth_n and_o more_o impartiality_n to_o judge_n and_o now_o all_o these_o cause_n methinks_v be_v so_o unreasonable_a inhuman_a and_o unchristian_a when_o thus_o naked_o represent_v that_o they_o can_v but_o stir_v up_o in_o soul_n not_o quite_o degenerate_a or_o corrupt_v dead_a and_o senseless_a of_o what_o be_v good_a many_o of_o these_o very_a passion_n against_o themselves_o and_o seem_v the_o ugly_a object_n that_o can_v be_v behold_v these_o be_v those_o which_o compose_v a_o devil_n more_o and_o be_v more_o essential_a to_o he_o than_o any_o other_o shape_n sect._n viii_o iv_o the_o cause_n some_o of_o they_o of_o false_a judge_v as_o false_a or_o of_o falsity_n error_n of_o judgement_n concern_v person_n whether_o on_o the_o good_a or_o bad_a side_n may_v as_o in_o all_o other_o false_a judgement_n be_v reduce_v to_o two_o within_o we_o in_o general_n 1._o defect_n in_o our_o understanding_n which_o here_o in_o this_o case_n be_v but_o one_o viz._n ignorance_n in_o a_o large_a sense_n viz._n the_o absence_n or_o want_v of_o apprehension_n or_o of_o the_o actual_a knowledge_n of_o something_o which_o will_v influence_n our_o judgement_n 2._o in_o our_o will_n a_o mere_a inclination_n to_o any_o certain_a false_a judgement_n whether_o it_o be_v from_o custom_n and_o use_v or_o from_o the_o love_n and_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o any_o certain_a object_n in_o this_o particular_a case_n of_o false_a judgement_n some_o of_o the_o most_o frequent_a cause_n more_o or_o less_o remote_o and_o some_o way_n or_o other_o reducible_a to_o these_o two_o be_v these_o sect._n ix_o 1._o in_o general_n mere_a ignorance_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o thing_n where_o there_o be_v no_o defect_n of_o will._n so_o a_o man_n may_v judge_v a_o action_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o effect_n and_o principle_n of_o it_o to_o be_v well_o or_o ill_o do_v when_o it_o be_v the_o contrary_a and_o it_o be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o jewish_a and_o gentile_a christian_n pass_v judgement_n of_o one_o another_o eat_v and_o abstain_v from_o certain_a meat_n and_o observe_v or_o not_o observe_v some_o certain_a day_n and_o time_n and_o consequent_o impose_v they_o upon_o one_o another_o from_o their_o own_o private_a opinion_n not_o as_o determine_v by_o their_o rightful_a superior_n or_o governor_n rom._n 14._o some_o of_o they_o through_o ignorance_n judge_v that_o those_o who_o take_v the_o liberty_n to_o eat_v forbid_v meat_n contrary_a to_o the_o moysaicall_a law_n which_o they_o think_v be_v still_o even_o under_o the_o messiah_n to_o be_v observe_v do_v a_o evil_a action_n and_o out_o of_o a_o evil_a right_o concern_v the_o action_n of_o abstain_v from_o meat_n that_o it_o be_v not_o right_a and_o the_o non-observation_n of_o or_o liberty_n from_o the_o jewish_a law_n be_v a_o christian_a privilege_n or_o it_o do_v not_o belong_v to_o the_o christian_a religion_n but_o possible_o too_o they_o may_v if_o they_o do_v not_o judge_v wrong_a concern_v the_o principle_n of_o these_o jewish_a in_o other_o many_o of_o which_o or_o but_o few_o they_o may_v ever_o have_v have_v occasion_n to_o observe_v they_o may_v also_o and_o do_v see_v and_o take_v notice_n of_o all_o the_o use_n and_o
