a_o appeal_n to_o all_o the_o true_a member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n in_o behalf_n of_o the_o king_n be_v ecclesiastical_a supremacy_n as_o by_o law_n establish_v by_o our_o convocation_n approve_v and_o by_o our_o most_o eminent_a bishop_n and_o clergyman_n state_v and_o defend_v against_o both_o the_o popish_a and_o fanatical_a opposer_n of_o it_o by_o william_n wake_v d._n d._n and_o chaplain_n in_o ordinary_a to_o his_o majesty_n london_n print_v for_o richard_n sare_n at_o grays-inn-gate_n in_o holborn_n mdcxcviii_o to_o the_o most_o reverend_a father_n in_o god_n thomas_n by_o divine_a providence_n lord_n archbishop_n of_o canterbury_n primate_n of_o all_o england_n and_o metropolitan_a my_o lord_n this_o appeal_n which_o address_n itself_o to_o other_o for_o their_o judgement_n sue_v with_o all_o humility_n to_o your_o grace_n for_o your_o protection_n and_o that_o such_o as_o i_o conceive_v be_v neither_o unfit_a for_o i_o to_o ask_v nor_o for_o your_o grace_n to_o afford_v you_o will_v here_o see_v what_o that_o true_a agreement_n be_v between_o the_o priesthood_n and_o the_o empire_n which_o our_o law_n have_v establish_v our_o convocation_n approve_v of_o and_o our_o great_a clergyman_n hitherto_o defend_v without_o the_o censure_n of_o any_o but_o the_o profess_a enemy_n of_o our_o church_n and_o constitution_n but_o now_o a_o new_a sort_n of_o disciplinarian_o be_v rise_v up_o from_o within_o ourselves_o who_o seem_v to_o comply_v with_o the_o government_n of_o the_o church_n much_o upon_o the_o same_o account_n that_o other_o do_v with_o that_o of_o the_o state_n not_o out_o of_o conscience_n to_o their_o duty_n or_o any_o love_n they_o have_v for_o it_o but_o because_o it_o be_v the_o establish_v church_n and_o they_o can_v keep_v their_o preferment_n without_o it_o they_o hate_v our_o constitution_n and_o revile_v all_o such_o as_o stand_v up_o in_o good_a earnest_n for_o it_o but_o for_o all_o that_o they_o resolve_v to_o hold_v fast_o to_o it_o and_o go_v on_o still_o to_o subscribe_v and_o rail_v in_o opposition_n either_o to_o the_o error_n or_o design_n of_o these_o man_n the_o present_a appeal_n bespeak_v your_o grace_n protection_n not_o so_o much_o for_o its_o self_n as_o for_o the_o article_n and_o canon_n of_o our_o church_n and_o for_o those_o excellent_a worthy_n who_o in_o their_o several_a succession_n have_v appear_v in_o defence_n of_o the_o king_n supremacy_n over_o the_o state_n ecclesiastical_a as_o by_o law_n declare_v and_o establish_v that_o you_o will_v vouchsafe_v still_o to_o continue_v to_o own_o a_o cause_n in_o which_o not_o only_o the_o church_n of_o england_n but_o the_o church_n catholic_n ever_o since_o the_o civil_a power_n have_v become_v christian_n be_v concern_v together_o with_o she_o the_o authority_n we_o plead_v for_o in_o behalf_n of_o our_o king_n be_v no_o other_o than_o what_o the_o most_o famous_a bishop_n and_o council_n of_o the_o church_n have_v give_v to_o their_o empeperor_n and_o who_o by_o consequence_n must_v all_o be_v involve_v in_o the_o same_o censure_n with_o our_o parliament_n and_o convocation_n and_o they_o who_o now_o revile_v the_o one_o will_v as_o free_o condemn_v the_o other_o but_o that_o they_o be_v sensible_a that_o many_o who_o be_v well_o content_a with_o the_o reproach_n of_o king_n henry_n viii_o and_o his_o clergy_n will_v not_o endure_v to_o hear_v the_o like_a charge_n make_v against_o constantine_n and_o theodosius_n and_o those_o bishop_n and_o council_n which_o all_o christian_n in_o all_o age_n have_v be_v wont_a to_o pay_v so_o great_a a_o regard_n to_o this_o my_o lord_n be_v the_o cause_n which_o i_o here_o bring_v before_o your_o grace_n in_o the_o defence_n whereof_o i_o have_v once_o already_o be_v engage_v and_o shall_v with_o god_n assistance_n again_o appear_v when_o those_o who_o now_o talk_v with_o such_o confidence_n against_o my_o former_a allegation_n shall_v give_v i_o occasion_n to_o show_v how_o just_a they_o be_v and_o how_o little_a in_o reality_n there_o be_v to_o be_v except_v against_o they_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n i_o be_v willing_a for_o the_o better_a discovery_n of_o these_o new-reformer_n by_o this_o short_a preliminany_n treatise_n to_o draw_v aside_o the_o curtain_n and_o let_v the_o world_n see_v who_o offspring_n they_o be_v and_o from_o who_o they_o derive_v both_o their_o principle_n and_o their_o animosity_n against_o us._n i_o can_v but_o hope_n that_o by_o this_o i_o shall_v awaken_v all_o the_o sincere_a member_n of_o our_o church_n to_o beware_v of_o they_o and_o not_o give_v countenance_n to_o such_o attempt_n as_o under_o a_o show_n of_o better_v our_o constitution_n do_v in_o reality_n tend_v to_o the_o utter_a subversion_n of_o it_o to_o your_o grace_n i_o submit_v both_o the_o design_n and_o the_o performance_n and_o with_o all_o possible_a duty_n and_o respect_n remain_v my_o lord_n your_o grace_n most_o humble_a and_o obedient_a servant_n william_n wake_v the_o preface_n when_o i_o enter_v upon_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o king_n supremacy_n in_o answer_n to_o the_o letter_n to_o a_o convocation_n man_n i_o be_v not_o so_o little_o acquaint_v with_o the_o temper_n and_o design_n of_o a_o certain_a party_n among_o we_o as_o not_o to_o know_v that_o my_o undertake_n will_v be_v likely_a to_o displease_v those_o who_o think_v any_o the_o least_o authority_n that_o be_v give_v to_o his_o present_a majesty_n to_o be_v a_o encroachment_n either_o upon_o their_o civil_a or_o ecclesiastical_a right_n nor_o be_v i_o unsensible_a what_o may_v possible_o be_v reply_v to_o the_o argument_n which_o i_o bring_v in_o proof_n of_o it_o the_o knowledge_n i_o have_v of_o what_o the_o papist_n be_v wont_a to_o return_v to_o the_o like_a allegation_n of_o our_o writer_n against_o they_o have_v in_o some_o measure_n inform_v i_o what_o upon_o this_o occasion_n may_v probable_o be_v say_v in_o answer_n to_o me._n but_o to_o find_v myself_o charge_v as_o if_o in_o defend_v the_o authority_n of_o the_o prince_n i_o have_v betray_v the_o right_n of_o the_o church_n pref._n and_o appear_v in_o such_o a_o cause_n as_o neither_o become_v my_o function_n nor_o have_v any_o of_o our_o clergy_n ever_o before_o concern_v themselves_o withal_o this_o i_o confess_v be_v a_o perfect_a surprise_n to_o i_o and_o abundant_o convince_v i_o that_o some_o man_n resentment_n be_v as_o much_o beyond_o modesty_n as_o they_o be_v without_o reason_n it_o can_v be_v unknown_a to_o any_o who_o be_v not_o a_o utter_a stranger_n to_o the_o history_n of_o our_o reformation_n upon_o what_o principle_n it_o be_v undertake_v and_o at_o last_o happy_o settle_v among_o we_o how_o the_o prince_n authority_n be_v both_o the_o mean_n by_o which_o it_o be_v carry_v on_o and_o the_o ground_n on_o which_o we_o justify_v ourselves_o in_o the_o do_n of_o it_o and_o indeed_o at_o the_o first_o none_o but_o the_o papist_n that_o be_v to_o say_v those_o who_o have_v engross_v this_o power_n into_o their_o own_o hand_n and_o can_v neither_o endure_v to_o part_v with_o it_o nor_o to_o submit_v to_o the_o use_v which_o they_o see_v we_o intend_v to_o make_v of_o it_o complain_v of_o what_o we_o do_v in_o restore_v the_o prince_n to_o his_o ancient_a and_o undoubted_a right_n or_o pretend_v to_o enter_v any_o process_n against_o we_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o it_o it_o be_v true_a some_o time_n after_o another_o party_n how_o opposite_a soever_o to_o the_o papist_n in_o other_o matter_n yet_o in_o this_o too_o near_o approach_v to_o they_o begin_v to_o set_v up_o themselves_o and_o to_o claim_v the_o same_o power_n in_o behalf_n of_o their_o kirk_n that_o the_o romanist_n have_v pretend_v to_o in_o right_o of_o their_o pope_n and_o church_n but_o against_o both_o these_o our_o bishop_n and_o clergy_n continue_v firm_a and_o costant_a and_o be_v by_o all_o impartial_a judge_n allow_v to_o be_v as_o much_o superior_a to_o they_o both_o in_o their_o argument_n as_o they_o be_v in_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o cause_n which_o they_o maintain_v thus_o stand_v this_o controversy_n till_o our_o own_o time_n insomuch_o that_o i_o hardly_o know_v any_o author_n profess_v himself_o a_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n who_o have_v either_o cast_v any_o aspersion_n upon_o our_o first_o reformer_n for_o restore_v the_o crown_n to_o its_o ancient_a jurisdiction_n or_o pretend_v that_o the_o divine_a right_n of_o the_o church_n be_v in_o any_o wise_a violate_a or_o infringe_v by_o it_o but_o it_o seem_v the_o case_n be_v very_o much_o alter_v now_o and_o it_o be_v of_o a_o sudden_a become_v a_o encroachment_n not_o to_o be_v endure_v by_o our_o new-church-patriot_n for_o the_o king_n to_o pretend_v to_o lay_v any_o restraint_n upon_o their_o assembly_n and_o a_o enterprise_n unbecoming_a a_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n preface_n though_o
be_v a_o party_n 340._o and_o the_o appeal_v therefore_o be_v to_o stop_v at_o the_o upper_a house_n of_o convocation_n i_o see_v no_o reason_n why_o this_o authority_n shall_v not_o be_v reserve_v to_o the_o king_n and_o i_o conceive_v the_o law_n of_o our_o realm_n do_v allow_v of_o it_o 8thly_a as_o for_o the_o dissolve_v of_o the_o convocation_n that_o be_v so_o evident_o a_o part_n of_o the_o royal_a jurisdiction_n and_o have_v be_v so_o full_o adjudge_v to_o belong_v to_o the_o king_n that_o i_o do_v not_o see_v what_o exception_n can_v be_v take_v at_o it_o however_o the_o constant_a practice_n of_o our_o convocation_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v on_o my_o side_n and_o i_o have_v herein_o ascribe_v no_o authority_n to_o the_o prince_n but_o what_o our_o clergy_n for_o above_o these_o hundred_o and_o fifty_o year_n last_o pass_v have_v constant_o submit_v to_o and_o by_o that_o submission_n alone_o have_v sufficient_o vest_v in_o he_o but_o if_o i_o be_o not_o mistake_v in_o point_n of_o law_n 40._o what_o be_v it_o that_o deserve_v so_o tragical_a a_o outcry_n as_o this_o late_a author_n have_v make_v against_o i_o be_v it_o that_o be_v a_o clergyman_n myself_o i_o appear_v in_o defence_n of_o the_o king_n authority_n over_o the_o clergy_n and_o which_o in_o some_o man_n notion_n be_v the_o same_o thing_n as_o to_o say_v against_o the_o right_n of_o the_o church_n so_o indeed_o the_o convocation_n seem_v to_o think_v in_o the_o case_n of_o dr._n standish_n pref._n heretofore_o and_o so_o some_o seem_v to_o account_v it_o now_o but_o god_n be_v thank_v the_o reform_a church_n of_o england_n never_o yet_o think_v it_o any_o offence_n in_o her_o clergy_n to_o stand_v up_o for_o the_o just_a right_n of_o the_o prince_n nor_o have_v i_o any_o apprehension_n that_o i_o shall_v ever_o be_v condemn_v upon_o this_o account_n by_o any_o true_a member_n of_o her_o communion_n and_o for_o other_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o ask_v only_o be_o i_o the_o first_o of_o our_o order_n that_o have_v appear_v on_o this_o occasion_n or_o do_v i_o stand_v alone_o in_o this_o cause_n but_o what_o then_o shall_v we_o say_v of_o all_o those_o learned_a bishop_n and_o clergyman_n who_o book_n i_o have_v here_o quote_v to_o the_o same_o purpose_n nay_o rather_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v of_o those_o whole_a convocation_n who_o compile_v our_o article_n and_o canon_n and_o have_v oblige_v we_o thereby_o not_o only_o occasional_o to_o defend_v the_o king_n supremacy_n can._n but_o to_o the_o best_a of_o our_o wit_n learning_n and_o knowledge_n public_o to_o declare_v and_o confirm_v it_o to_o our_o congregation_n four_o time_n every_o year_n if_o this_o be_v that_o for_o which_o i_o ought_v to_o be_v censure_v i_o be_o afraid_a so_o great_a a_o part_n of_o our_o order_n will_v go_v along_o with_o i_o as_o may_v make_v it_o even_o scandalous_a to_o stay_v behind_o and_o be_v number_v among_o that_o little_a noisy_a turbulent_a party_n that_o now_o set_v themselves_o up_o as_o judge_n over_o us._n but_o if_o both_o the_o law_n be_v on_o my_o side_n 41._o and_o it_o be_v no_o improper_a enterprise_n for_o a_o clergyman_n to_o appear_v in_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v more_o be_v the_o time_n improper_a do_v i_o take_v a_o unseasonable_a opportunity_n of_o assert_v this_o authority_n nay_o but_o this_o they_o shall_v have_v consider_v who_o by_o appear_v so_o eager_o against_o the_o prince_n power_n over_o the_o convocation_n make_v it_o absolute_o necessary_a for_o some_o or_o other_o of_o our_o church_n to_o do_v she_o right_o and_o let_v the_o world_n know_v that_o she_o never_o commission_v any_o of_o her_o member_n to_o broach_v any_o such_o principle_n on_o her_o behalf_n that_o she_o be_v content_a to_o act_n under_o the_o royal_a supremacy_n and_o be_v sensible_a that_o it_o be_v her_o duty_n so_o to_o do_v that_o if_o some_o hot_a man_n for_o aught_o she_o know_v her_o enemy_n will_v under_o pretence_n of_o assert_v such_o a_o power_n to_o she_o as_o she_o have_v always_o disclaim_v endeavour_v to_o raise_v any_o jealousy_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o her_o defender_n against_o she_o it_o be_v what_o she_o can_v help_v and_o she_o hope_n she_o shall_v not_o be_v the_o worse_o account_v of_o for_o such_o attempt_n as_o she_o neither_o approve_v of_o nor_o know_v how_o to_o prevent_v and_o now_o 42._o there_o be_v but_o one_o thing_n more_o that_o can_v i_o think_v be_v object_v against_o my_o undertake_n and_o i_o shall_v lay_v it_o down_o in_o the_o word_n in_o which_o it_o be_v charge_v upon_o i_o 3._o for_o what_o if_o the_o public_a from_o such_o a_o work_n inscribe_v to_o the_o metropolitan_a shall_v be_v tempt_v to_o proceed_v to_o further_a resolve_n against_o the_o power_n hierarchicall_a this_o i_o confess_v will_v be_v such_o a_o use_n of_o it_o as_o i_o shall_v be_v hearty_o sorry_a for_o though_o even_o in_o such_o a_o case_n i_o can_v tell_v whether_o i_o shall_v ever_o the_o more_o deserve_v to_o be_v censure_v for_o what_o i_o have_v do_v there_o can_v nothing_o be_v either_o so_o well_o design_v or_o so_o careful_o perform_v of_o which_o a_o ill_a use_n may_v not_o be_v make_v and_o if_o that_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a to_o cry_v down_o any_o undertake_n i_o do_v not_o see_v how_o we_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o satisfy_v our_o conscience_n in_o anything_o we_o have_v to_o do_v but_o in_o reason_n i_o be_o sure_a the_o church_n may_v have_v expect_v to_o suffer_v much_o more_o by_o the_o letter_n to_o the_o convocation_n man_n than_o by_o the_o answer_n which_o i_o make_v to_o it_o when_o churchman_n set_v up_o their_o divine_a right_n in_o opposition_n to_o the_o law_n of_o their_o country_n and_o upon_o visionary_a notion_n endeavour_v to_o lead_v man_n into_o discontent_n against_o their_o governor_n it_o be_v natural_a not_o to_o say_v necesiary_n for_o prince_n to_o look_v to_o themselves_o and_o consider_v how_o to_o stop_v those_o attempt_n at_o the_o beginning_n which_o experience_n have_v show_v they_o may_v otherwise_o in_o time_n grow_v too_o strong_a for_o them_o it_o be_v the_o intolerable_a insolence_n and_o usurpation_n of_o the_o roman_a church_n that_o make_v she_o first_o fear_v then_o hate_v and_o at_o last_o crush_v the_o hierarchic_a in_o many_o place_n to_o piece_n and_o whatever_o party_n shall_v think_v fit_a to_o pursue_v the_o same_o method_n aught_o in_o all_o reason_n to_o expect_v the_o same_o treatment_n if_o clergyman_n will_v enjoy_v the_o protection_n of_o prince_n it_o be_v but_o reasonable_a that_o they_o shall_v be_v content_a to_o acknowledge_v their_o authority_n to_o contend_v for_o more_o power_n than_o either_o christ_n have_v leave_v we_o or_o our_o call_v require_v or_o the_o bishop_n and_o council_n under_o the_o first_o christian_a emperor_n pretend_v to_o or_o desire_v be_v neither_o prudent_a nor_o justifyable_a it_o be_v to_o render_v the_o church_n suspect_v by_o the_o state_n and_o to_o set_v those_o power_n in_o opposition_n to_o which_o ought_v mutual_o to_o help_n and_o support_v one-anoth_a i_o have_v before_o show_v what_o opinion_n a_o very_a learned_a man_n 37._o upon_o this_o ground_n have_v of_o the_o act_n of_o submission_n now_o so_o much_o rail_v at_o in_o these_o day_n he_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o law_n of_o great_a benefit_n to_o the_o church_n even_o for_o this_o reason_n alone_o that_o it_o free_v the_o civil_a power_n from_o entertain_v any_o more_o fear_n and_o jealousy_n of_o the_o clergy_n this_o be_v a_o remark_n found_v upon_o good_a reason_n as_o well_o as_o upon_o the_o experience_n of_o those_o former_a miscarriage_n which_o the_o clergy_n have_v run_v into_o for_o want_v of_o such_o a_o restraint_n and_o i_o can_v but_o every_o day_n more_o and_o more_o acknowledge_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n towards_o our_o church_n in_o that_o very_a thing_n for_o which_o some_o man_n so_o tragical_o lament_v the_o oppression_n and_o slavery_n of_o it_o be_v full_o persuade_v that_o nothing_o at_o this_o day_n preserve_v we_o from_o ruin_n and_o desolation_n but_o that_o we_o have_v not_o power_n of_o ourselves_o to_o do_v the_o church_n a_o mischief_n and_o the_o prince_n who_o see_v but_o too_o much_o of_o our_o temper_n be_v too_o gracious_a to_o we_o and_o have_v too_o great_a a_o concern_v for_o the_o church_n good_a to_o suffer_v we_o to_o do_v it_o these_o be_v the_o advantage_n which_o i_o look_v upon_o the_o church_n to_o derive_v to_o herself_o from_o this_o act._n it_o prevent_v all_o jealousy_n which_o either_o the_o odd_a principle_n the_o violent_a temper_n or_o the_o wicked_a design_n of_o some_o man_n may_v just_o raise_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o our_o governor_n against_o we_o and_o free_v they_o from_o all_o temptation_n as_o well_o
impartial_a reader_n to_o judge_v it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o ill_a effect_n that_o common_o attend_v controversial_a write_n that_o it_o be_v very_o difficult_a to_o manage_v they_o either_o with_o that_o temper_n and_o ingenuity_n that_o become_v scholar_n or_o with_o that_o charity_n that_o good_a christian_n ought_v to_o do_v and_o it_o be_v this_o have_v give_v i_o almost_o as_o great_a a_o this_o church_n and_o realm_n but_o so_o the_o law_n speak_v as_o well_o as_o i_o and_o to_o these_o both_o the_o article_n and_o canon_n of_o the_o church_n require_v i_o to_o conform_v nay_o they_o do_v more_o they_o require_v i_o not_o only_o to_o conform_v myself_o but_o to_o do_v what_o in_o i_o lie_v 1._o to_z move_z all_z other_o to_o the_o observance_n of_o they_o and_o if_o for_o this_o i_o must_v be_v censure_v these_o law_n and_o canon_n must_v run_v the_o same_o fate_n with_o me._n and_o i_o shall_v always_o account_v it_o a_o honour_n to_o suffer_v for_o assert_v the_o law_n of_o the_o realm_n and_o for_o maintain_v the_o doctrine_n and_o constitution_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n or_o be_v it_o that_o i_o have_v go_v beyond_o the_o bound_n of_o the_o law_n and_o give_v a_o great_a and_o more_o general_a authority_n to_o the_o christian_a prince_n than_o either_o the_o submission_n of_o the_o clergy_n or_o the_o act_n of_o king_n henry_n the_o viiith_o found_v thereupon_o have_v declare_v to_o belong_v to_o he_o this_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v i_o may_v have_v do_v and_o yet_o not_o be_v guilty_a of_o any_o fault_n neither_o in_o the_o do_n of_o it_o i_o have_v before_o say_v and_o do_v here_o again_o repeat_v it_o with_o the_o same_o assurance_n i_o at_o first_o deliver_v it_o that_o i_o do_v not_o find_v the_o right_n of_o our_o king_n to_o this_o jurisdiction_n either_o upon_o that_o or_o upon_o any_o other_o act_n that_o have_v be_v make_v in_o pursuance_n of_o it_o i_o fix_v it_o upon_o the_o right_n of_o etc._n sovereignty_n in_o general_n and_o upon_o that_o ancient_a jurisdiction_n in_o cause_n ecclesiastical_a which_o the_o very_a statute_n of_o queen_n elizabeth_n speak_v of_o and_o allow_v to_o have_v be_v always_o of_o right_a belong_v to_o the_o imperial_a crown_n of_o this_o realm_n to_o this_o our_o 1_o law_n themselves_o agree_v they_o speak_v still_o of_o restore_a to_o the_o crown_n its_o ancient_a right_n and_o our_o 9_o lawyer_n have_v according_o constant_o affirm_v that_o these_o act_n and_o particular_o that_o which_o we_o be_v here_o especial_o concern_v in_o the_o 1_o eliz._n c._n 1._o be_v not_o introductory_n of_o a_o new_a law_n but_o declaratory_a of_o the_o old_a and_o therefore_o before_o i_o can_v just_o be_v condemn_v upon_o this_o account_n my_o proof_n must_v be_v answer_v and_o it_o must_v be_v show_v that_o what_o i_o ascribe_v to_o the_o king_n be_v not_o a_o parcel_n of_o that_o jurisdiction_n which_o be_v once_o enjoy_v by_o the_o king_n and_o prince_n of_o this_o realm_n and_o do_v always_o of_o right_a belong_v to_o they_o and_o that_o i_o believe_v it_o will_v be_v no_o easy_a matter_n to_o do_v one_a i_o affirm_v that_o it_o be_v the_o right_n of_o every_o christian_a king_n to_o call_v his_o clergy_n together_o in_o convocation_n and_o that_o without_o his_o call_n they_o can_v regular_o assemble_v to_o any_o such_o purpose_n of_o themselves_o but_o so_o our_o law_n express_o declare_v that_o the_o convocation_n shall_v evermore_o be_v call_v by_o the_o king_n be_v write_v and_o it_o be_v notorious_a to_o every_o one_o who_o have_v any_o knowledge_n in_o these_o matter_n how_o dangerous_a it_o will_v be_v for_o the_o clergy_n to_o presume_v to_o come_v together_o without_o it_o 2_o i_o assert_v that_o the_o very_a person_n who_o meet_v in_o our_o convocation_n be_v determine_v and_o empower_v by_o the_o king_n be_v write_v and_o that_o none_o have_v a_o right_a to_o assemble_v but_o such_o as_o he_o call_v by_o it_o let_v the_o writ_n of_o summons_n be_v examine_v and_o let_v it_o there_o be_v see_v whether_o the_o case_n be_v not_o so_o as_o i_o pretend_v it_o to_o be_v let_v this_o author_n tell_v i_o if_o he_o can_v why_o such_o and_o such_o dignitaries_n be_v require_v personal_o to_o come_v to_o the_o convocation_n other_o to_o send_v such_o a_o certain_a number_n of_o delegate_n to_o represent_v they_o but_o that_o the_o writ_n of_o summons_n so_o direct_v so_o authorise_v they_o to_o do_v and_o though_o i_o do_v not_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v now_o in_o the_o king_n power_n to_o alter_v this_o form_n yet_o the_o sovereign_n legislative_a authority_n may_v without_o controversy_n do_v it_o and_o appoint_v any_o other_o method_n of_o frame_v the_o low_a house_n of_o convocation_n that_o shall_v appear_v to_o they_o to_o be_v more_o proper_a and_o expedient_a 3_o i_o declare_v that_o by_o our_o law_n the_o convocation_n can_v deliberate_v on_o no_o canon_n or_o constitution_n without_o first_o obtain_v the_o king_n licence_n so_o to_o do_v it_o be_v the_o express_a resolution_n of_o the_o act_n of_o submission_n and_o our_o convocation_n do_v according_o notorious_o govern_v their_o proceed_n by_o it_o four_o i_o add_v that_o heretofore_o the_o christian_a emperor_n prescribe_v to_o their_o synod_n the_o very_a method_n they_o shall_v observe_v in_o handle_v the_o matter_n which_o lay_v before_o they_o this_o indeed_o i_o affirm_v and_o i_o think_v i_o have_v prove_v it_o too_o and_o if_o to_o this_o end_n our_o king_n shall_v think_v fit_a either_o himself_o to_o come_v or_o to_o appoint_v any_o other_o to_o preside_v in_o his_o stead_n and_o direct_v the_o debate_n of_o our_o synod_n as_o he_o shall_v command_v they_o to_o do_v i_o do_v not_o see_v that_o he_o will_v therein_o do_v any_o more_o than_o what_o some_o of_o the_o best_a christian_a prince_n have_v do_v before_o he_o 5th_o i_o pretend_v that_o to_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n it_o belong_v to_o confirm_v or_o annihilate_v such_o of_o the_o act_n of_o their_o synod_n as_o they_o think_v fit_a our_o law_n agree_v to_o it_o our_o king_n claim_v it_o our_o convocation_n submit_v to_o and_o approve_v of_o it_o and_o let_v those_o who_o scruple_n this_o consider_v how_o low_o they_o sink_v the_o authority_n of_o a_o prince_n if_o they_o leave_v he_o not_o the_o power_n which_o every_o ordinary_a person_n claim_v of_o judge_v for_o himself_o but_o will_v oblige_v he_o at_o a_o venture_n to_o confirm_v whatsoever_o the_o lord_n of_o the_o consistory_n shall_v please_v to_o define_v 6thly_a that_o the_o prince_n may_v alter_v their_o constitution_n i_o no_o otherwise_o affirm_v than_o as_o i_o say_v it_o be_v in_o his_o power_n to_o make_v law_n in_o matter_n ecclesiastical_a and_o that_o for_o the_o do_v of_o this_o he_o may_v advise_v with_o his_o clergy_n and_o follow_v their_o counsel_n so_o far_o as_o he_o approve_v of_o it_o thus_o charles_n the_o emperor_n make_v up_o his_o capitular_a and_o thus_o any_o other_o sovereign_a prince_n may_v take_v the_o canon_n of_o the_o church_n and_o form_v they_o in_o such_o wise_a into_o a_o ecclesiastical_a law_n as_o he_o think_v will_v be_v most_o for_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o the_o good_a of_o his_o people_n 7thly_a in_o case_n of_o appeal_n i_o show_v what_o power_n the_o ancient_a emperor_n both_o claim_v and_o exercise_v and_o i_o modest_o vindicate_v to_o our_o own_o sovereign_n the_o same_o authority_n which_o the_o father_n of_o the_o church_n without_o all_o scruple_n allow_v to_o their_o prince_n and_o except_o it_o be_v in_o such_o case_n where_o the_o king_n
