partly_o faith_n and_o partly_o christ_n obedience_n be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o righteousness_n the_o four_o and_o last_o be_v that_o only_a christ_n in_o his_o obedience_n be_v the_o whole_a matter_n of_o our_o righteousness_n the_o vanity_n of_o the_o first_o 3._o opinion_n will_v more_o full_o appear_v when_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o formal_a cause_n of_o justification_n &_o when_o we_o shall_v treat_v of_o justification_n itself_o as_o likewise_o when_o we_o shall_v clear_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o four_o opinion_n therefore_o we_o will_v speak_v the_o more_o short_o of_o they_o now_o against_o all_o three_o this_o ground_n general_o serve_v to_o wit_n that_o no_o man_n be_v justify_v before_o god_n by_o any_o work_n inherent_a in_o himself_o or_o do_v by_o himself_o whether_o it_o be_v of_o nature_n or_o of_o grace_n or_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n the_o reason_n be_v if_o man_n be_v justify_v in_o any_o sort_n by_o work_n justification_n can_v not_o be_v by_o grace_n according_a as_o say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 11._o 6._o if_o it_o be_v of_o grace_n it_o be_v no_o more_o of_o work_n else_o be_v grace_n no_o more_o grace_n and_o if_o it_o be_v of_o work_n it_o be_v no_o more_o grace_n else_o be_v work_v no_o more_o work_n thus_o none_o of_o these_o three_o foremost_a opinion_n can_v stand_v except_o we_o will_v destroy_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o abolish_v it_o altogether_o from_o the_o work_n of_o justification_n for_o grace_n and_o work_n even_o though_o they_o be_v of_o grace_n can_v never_o stand_v together_o in_o the_o work_n of_o our_o justification_n which_o also_o manifest_v the_o gross_a impiety_n of_o all_o these_o three_o opinion_n in_o place_v faith_n either_o in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n in_o our_o righteousness_n as_o it_o be_v our_o own_o work_n see_v by_o no_o work_n of_o his_o own_o can_v man_n possible_o be_v justify_v for_o otherwise_o it_o can_v be_v but_o christ_n must_v have_v die_v in_o vain_a second_o our_o righteousness_n consist_v not_o in_o god_n acceptation_n of_o any_o thing_n that_o proceed_v from_o we_o to_o godward_o but_o in_o god_n imputation_n be_v say_v to_o receyve_v righteousness_n as_o a_o gift_n whereby_o it_o be_v most_o evident_a that_o no_o work_n of_o the_o law_n nor_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o our_o heart_n can_v possible_o be_v our_o righteousness_n for_o our_o act_n of_o believe_a be_v a_o action_n pass_v from_o we_o to_o god-ward_o and_o be_v attribute_v as_o it_o be_v by_o they_o to_o man_n free_a will_n be_v no_o less_o the_o work_n of_o man_n than_o any_o other_o work_n of_o the_o law_n what_o soever_o but_o our_o righteousness_n be_v call_v in_o the_o scripture_n the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n and_o not_o of_o man_n because_o it_o go_v not_o from_o we_o towards_o he_o but_o it_o come_v from_o he_o to_o us._n three_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o the_o scripture_n that_o no_o man_n be_v just_a in_o himself_o but_o in_o another_o for_o among_o man_n there_o be_v none_o righteous_a no_o not_o one_o psal_n 14._o but_o if_o that_o whereby_o he_o be_v justify_v &_o which_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o righteousness_n be_v in_o himself_o he_o must_v not_o only_o be_v just_a but_o just_a in_o himself_o which_o both_o do_v plain_o contradict_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n which_o plain_o deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o man_n righteous_a and_o that_o any_o man_n be_v make_v righteous_a in_o himself_o but_o who_o soever_o god_n justify_v he_o justify_v they_o in_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o he_o 2._o corinth_n 5._o 21._o four_o the_o nature_n of_o justification_n consist_v in_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n it_o can_v not_o possible_o stand_v in_o that_o that_o be_v the_o direct_a contrary_n but_o all_o these_o three_o opinion_n make_v it_o stand_v in_o the_o contrary_a that_o be_v in_o god_n acceptation_n of_o obedience_n for_o whether_o the_o lord_n justify_v we_o for_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o for_o fulfil_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n require_v by_o god_n of_o we_o unto_o justification_n it_o be_v always_o for_o and_o by_o our_o obedience_n that_o he_o justify_v us._n so_o that_o justification_n shall_v never_o consist_v in_o pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o cover_v of_o iniquity_n but_o by_o the_o contrary_a in_o the_o second_o controversy_n be_v touch_v the_o proper_a signification_n of_o faith_n what_o it_o be_v in_o the_o first_o controversy_n these_o who_o take_v faith_n in_o a_o borrow_a speech_n do_v expound_v that_o sentence_n metonymical_o by_o faith_n understanding_n christ_n crucify_v apprehend_v by_o faith_n and_o so_o do_v esteem_v that_o faith_n relative_o or_o instrumental_o take_v and_o not_o proper_o be_v impute_v unto_o we_o for_o righteousness_n and_o this_o opinion_n agree_v with_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o matter_n itself_o but_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n why_o faith_n in_o that_o place_n shall_v be_v take_v in_o a_o borrow_a sense_n if_o the_o right_a mind_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o this_o phrase_n be_v grave_o and_o mature_o consider_v so_o that_o if_o they_o who_o take_v it_o proper_o do_v not_o err_v either_o in_o the_o signification_n of_o it_o or_o in_o the_o true_a sense_n of_o the_o imputation_n of_o it_o their_o opinion_n may_v well_o be_v allow_v for_o faith_n in_o this_o sentence_n be_v in_o my_o opinion_n to_o be_v take_v proper_o in_o that_o sense_n whereby_o in_o itself_o it_o be_v distinguish_v both_o from_o the_o word_n whereby_o it_o be_v beget_v and_o from_o the_o object_n of_o it_o in_o the_o word_n which_o be_v christ_n as_o also_o from_o the_o naked_a knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n and_o christ_n therein_o reveyl_v how_o soever_o it_o do_v comprehend_v knowledge_n for_o search_v out_o therefore_o the_o true_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n faith_n in_o this_o sentence_n we_o will_v first_o set_v down_o the_o divers_a signification_n wherein_o it_o be_v take_v second_o we_o will_v speak_v of_o the_o true_a nature_n and_o signification_n of_o it_o in_o this_o place_n where_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v impute_v unto_o righteousness_n concern_v the_o first_o we_o be_v not_o to_o speak_v of_o that_o difference_n which_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v warrant_v of_o historical_a faith_n be_v nothing_o but_o a_o naked_a opinion_n which_o be_v a_o doubtful_a inclination_n of_o a_o uncertain_a mind_n to_o the_o best_a part_n of_o the_o contradiction_n with_o fear_n of_o the_o contrary_a part_n be_v destitute_a of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o true_a cause_n as_o for_o example_n in_o this_o contradiction_n christ_n death_n shall_v save_v us._n and_o christ_n death_n shall_v not_o save_v we_o they_o have_v a_o opinion_n of_o the_o best_a that_o be_v that_o christ_n death_n shall_v save_v they_o but_o no_o certain_a knowledge_n because_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o cause_n of_o judgement_n betwixt_o opinion_n and_o knowledge_n which_o participate_v of_o both_o and_o yet_o be_v neither_o of_o they_o for_o they_o will_v not_o have_v it_o a_o doubtful_a inclination_n of_o the_o mind_n unto_o the_o best_a part_n with_o fear_n of_o the_o worst_a upon_o ignorance_n of_o the_o cause_n neither_o will_v they_o have_v it_o a_o certain_a inclination_n of_o the_o mind_n to_o redemption_n so_o the_o word_n grace_n seclude_v not_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n nor_o the_o price_n that_o he_o have_v pay_v for_o we_o nor_o ought_v else_o ordain_v of_o god_n by_o his_o grace_n and_o by_o his_o general_a providence_n extend_v over_o all_o but_o the_o second_o he_o give_v not_o but_o by_o special_a grace_n and_o by_o a_o special_a providence_n and_o particular_a love_n in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n there_o be_v no_o ground_n nor_o cause_n in_o they_o to_o who_o he_o give_v they_o why_o they_o shall_v have_v they_o nor_o any_o mean_n in_o their_o power_n to_o procure_v they_o thus_o faith_n and_o christ_n by_o faith_n be_v give_v we_o of_o god_n not_o for_o any_o worthiness_n in_o we_o nor_o for_o any_o thing_n give_v to_o god_n by_o we_o but_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o
