internal_a part_n of_o the_o earth_n that_o these_o part_n may_v by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o aether_n be_v so_o agitate_a and_o blend_a together_o as_o to_o make_v they_o work_v upon_o and_o dissolve_v each_o other_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o we_o have_v often_o have_v example_n of_o some_o of_o the_o part_n of_o the_o earth_n a_o late_a instance_n of_o which_o be_v at_o mongibel_n or_o aetna_n in_o sicily_n where_o the_o fire_n continue_v for_o a_o long_a time_n and_o produce_v very_o considerable_a effect_n that_o this_o internal_a agitation_n may_v confound_v the_o gravitating_a principle_n and_o so_o leave_v the_o part_n in_o a_o great_a freedom_n to_o be_v dissolve_v by_o the_o encompass_v aether_n which_o be_v the_o agent_n that_o set_v the_o other_o two_o at_o work_n to_o destroy_v each_o other_o that_o it_o may_v at_o length_n prey_n upon_o both_o and_o dissolve_v they_o both_o into_o itself_o and_o consequent_o not_o only_o the_o part_n thus_o dissolve_v be_v elevate_v to_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o the_o centre_n of_o the_o star_n or_o nucleus_n or_o the_o superficies_n of_o it_o who_o gravitating_a or_o attractive_a principle_n be_v much_o destroy_v the_o coma_n be_v in_o this_o comet_n four_o or_o five_o diameter_n of_o the_o star_n or_o nucleus_n but_o have_v give_v those_o part_n leave_v thus_o far_o to_o ramble_v the_o gravitating_a principle_n of_o another_o body_n more_o potent_a act_n upon_o it_o and_o make_v those_o part_n seem_v to_o recede_v from_o the_o centre_n thereof_o though_o real_o they_o be_v but_o as_o it_o be_v leave_v behind_o the_o body_n of_o the_o star_n which_o be_v more_o powerful_o attract_v than_o the_o minute_a steam_a part_n for_o i_o suppose_v the_o gravitating_a power_n of_o the_o sun_n in_o the_o centre_n of_o this_o part_n of_o the_o heaven_n in_o which_o we_o be_v have_v a_o attractive_a power_n upon_o all_o the_o body_n of_o the_o planet_n and_o of_o the_o earth_n that_o move_v about_o it_o and_o that_o each_o of_o those_o again_o have_v a_o respect_n answerable_a whereby_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o attract_v the_o sun_n in_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o the_o loadstone_n have_v to_o iron_n and_o the_o iron_n have_v to_o the_o loadstone_n i_o conceive_v also_o that_o this_o attractive_a virtue_n may_v act_v likewise_o upon_o several_a other_o body_n that_o come_v within_o the_o centre_n of_o its_o sphere_n of_o activity_n though_o it_o be_v not_o improbable_a also_o but_o that_o as_o on_o some_o body_n it_o may_v have_v no_o effect_n at_o all_o no_o become_v of_o other_o nature_n than_o they_o be_v before_o and_o so_o the_o body_n may_v cease_v to_o maintain_v its_o place_n in_o the_o universe_n where_o first_o it_o be_v place_v whence_o instead_o of_o continue_v to_o move_v round_o some_o central_a body_n whether_o sun_n or_o planet_n as_o it_o do_v whilst_o it_o maintain_v itself_o entire_a and_o so_o have_v its_o magnetical_a quality_n as_o i_o may_v so_o call_v it_o unconfound_v it_o now_o leave_v that_o circular_a way_n and_o by_o its_o motion_n which_o always_o tend_v to_o a_o straight_a line_n and_o will_v be_v so_o sun_n by_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v some_o central_a part_n of_o it_o which_o be_v not_o yet_o destroy_v and_o so_o retain_v somewhat_o of_o its_o gravitating_a principle_n yet_o i_o conceive_v that_o all_o those_o part_n of_o the_o comet_n which_o be_v thus_o wrought_v upon_o by_o the_o other_o and_o change_v into_o another_o state_n and_o be_v very_o much_o rarify_v and_o produce_v light_a be_v of_o a_o clean_a contrary_a nature_n and_o recede_v from_o the_o centre_n of_o the_o sun_n much_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o we_o find_v any_o combustible_a body_n with_o we_o as_o coal_n etc._n etc._n where_o we_o find_v that_o the_o body_n of_o the_o coal_n before_o it_o be_v resolve_v into_o smoke_n be_v a_o very_a dense_n and_o very_o heavy_a body_n and_o tend_v to_o the_o centre_n of_o fluid_a from_o fluid_fw-la as_o aether_n from_o aether_n as_o i_o may_v so_o call_v differ_v aether_n because_o we_o have_v not_o yet_o distinct_a name_n in_o use_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o their_o conglobation_n the_o aether_n from_o the_o air_n the_o air_n from_o the_o water_n the_o water_n from_o quicksilver_n oil_n or_o other_o fluid_a three_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o conglobate_v property_n of_o each_o of_o these_o fluid_n when_o separate_v how_o they_o accept_v and_o embrace_v homogenea_n and_o reject_v or_o expel_v heterogenea_n and_o four_a how_o they_o condense_a and_o settle_v together_o and_o produce_v a_o solid_a body_n whence_o proceed_v the_o confirmation_n of_o attraction_n or_o gravitation_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o digress_v no_o further_o but_o conclude_v this_o part_n of_o enquiry_n in_o short_a i_o suppose_v the_o nucleus_n or_o star_n of_o the_o comet_n may_v be_v much_o of_o the_o like_a nature_n with_o the_o central_a part_n of_o the_o earth_n moon_n mars_n jupiter_n saturn_n or_o other_o planet_n but_o much_o impair_v in_o its_o attractive_a or_o gravitating_a power_n next_o that_o the_o coma_n or_o hazy_a cloud_n about_o it_o may_v be_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o atmosphere_n or_o air_n about_o the_o earth_n or_o the_o smoke_n or_o steam_n about_o a_o heat_a or_o burn_a body_n before_o they_o be_v quite_o kindle_v convert_v into_o flame_n or_o dissolve_v into_o the_o ambient_fw-la air._n three_o that_o the_o tail_n or_o blaze_n be_v much_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o part_n of_o flame_n though_o with_o those_o discontinue_v the_o appearance_n whence_o every_o shine_a particle_n appear_v only_o a_o shine_a point_n though_o in_o the_o part_n of_o flame_n where_o notwithstanding_o the_o motion_n be_v much_o flower_n yet_o be_v near_o and_o so_o vary_v the_o position_n to_o the_o eye_n much_o quick_a each_o of_o the_o shine_a part_n make_v a_o appearance_n of_o a_o line_n of_o light_n and_o all_o of_o they_o pass_v pretty_a near_o together_o make_v the_o appearance_n of_o a_o continue_a fluid_a flame_n though_o that_o indeed_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o great_a number_n of_o single_a parcel_n of_o the_o burn_a body_n raise_v up_o in_o the_o particle_n of_o smoke_n this_o will_v appear_v evident_a if_o we_o consider_v the_o appearance_n easy_o to_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o in_o light_n for_o it_o be_v obvious_a from_o multitude_n of_o experiment_n that_o any_o shine_a body_n as_o a_o candle_n or_o brand_n end_v be_v move_v very_o quick_a make_v the_o same_o impression_n on_o the_o eye_n that_o a_o line_n of_o light_n do_v stand_v still_o and_o as_o obvious_a also_o that_o any_o very_a light_a body_n encompass_v with_o a_o dark_a medium_n appear_v to_o the_o eye_n under_o a_o angle_n big_a than_o real_o it_o be_v and_o a_o dark_a body_n encompass_v with_o a_o light_a medium_n much_o less_o this_o any_o one_o may_v present_o find_v if_o he_o make_v a_o small_a hole_n through_o a_o of_o the_o imperceptibleness_n of_o each_o of_o they_o they_o all_o seem_v to_o coalesce_v into_o a_o stream_n or_o blaze_n of_o light_n the_o brightness_n of_o which_o be_v yet_o far_o augment_v by_o a_o clear_a and_o unenlightened_a air_n and_o by_o such_o a_o part_n of_o the_o heaven_n wherein_o there_o appear_v few_o of_o the_o star_n whether_o they_o be_v great_a or_o lesser_a to_o the_o query_n of_o what_o magnitude_n the_o body_n coma_n and_o blaze_n of_o comet_n may_v be_v no_o answer_n can_v be_v give_v until_o another_o question_n be_v first_o answer_v and_o that_o be_v what_o be_v the_o place_n of_o comet_n and_o what_o be_v their_o distance_n from_o the_o earth_n it_o be_v the_o opinion_n of_o most_o modern_a writer_n before_o tycho_n brahe_n and_o kepler_n i_o know_v divers_a of_o the_o ancient_n think_v otherwise_o that_o comet_n be_v sublunary_a meteor_n draw_v up_o into_o the_o high_a region_n of_o the_o air_n and_o there_o set_v on_o fire_n and_o so_o parallax_n and_o whether_o from_o their_o unaccurate_a instrument_n or_o from_o their_o less_o skill_n and_o diligence_n in_o use_v they_o or_o from_o a_o imagination_n of_o the_o solidity_n and_o impenetrability_n of_o the_o celestial_a orb_n or_o from_o error_n in_o their_o calculation_n or_o from_o compare_v observation_n make_v at_o distant_a place_n one_o or_o both_o whereof_o be_v trouble_n of_o examine_v strict_o into_o the_o matter_n and_o to_o understand_v the_o nature_n of_o parallax_n and_o how_o significant_a they_o be_v in_o determine_v the_o distance_n of_o body_n from_o the_o surface_n of_o the_o earth_n to_o certain_a degree_n thereof_o beyond_o which_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o imperfection_n in_o instrument_n and_o observation_n and_o the_o exceed_a niceness_n and_o curiosity_n necessary_a they_o signify_v very_o little_a it_o be_v not_o my_o present_a design_n to_o explain_v what_o parallax_n be_v that_o i_o will_v suppose_v my_o reader_n to_o understand_v otherwise_o there_o can_v be_v no_o reason_n show_v he_o to_o convince_v he_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o prove_v that_o this_o or_o that_o comet_n be_v not_o near_a than_o so_o many_o semidiameter_n of_o the_o earth_n nor_o far_o off_o than_o so_o many_o there_o be_v then_o two_o way_n by_o which_o we_o may_v come_v to_o some_o certainty_n of_o what_o distance_n a_o comet_n be_v and_o those_o be_v first_o the_o parallax_n of_o its_o diurnal_a motion_n or_o its_o parallax_n cause_v by_o the_o diurnal_a motion_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o

supposition_n which_o seem_v to_o have_v the_o great_a difficulty_n in_o this_o theory_n viz._n how_o the_o dissolution_n of_o the_o part_n of_o the_o star_n by_o the_o encompass_v aether_n shall_v cause_v light_n and_o second_o how_o it_o shall_v cause_v a_o actual_a levitation_n of_o the_o dissolve_v particle_n upward_o for_o the_o explication_n of_o these_o two_o difficulty_n i_o must_v at_o present_a crave_v favour_n to_o explain_v they_o by_o example_n take_v from_o operation_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o atmosphere_n wherein_o we_o live_v very_o similar_v and_o analogous_a to_o they_o first_o for_o the_o production_n of_o light_n we_o find_v that_o the_o air_n encompass_v the_o steam_n of_o body_n prepare_v by_o heat_n or_o otherwise_o and_o make_v fit_a for_o dissolution_n do_v so_o operate_v upon_o they_o as_o to_o make_v they_o fly_v and_o part_v asunder_o with_o a_o very_a impetuous_a motion_n insomuch_o that_o the_o small_a particle_n or_o atom_n of_o the_o dissolve_a body_n do_v not_o only_o leave_v one_o another_o but_o depart_v and_o dart_v out_o with_o so_o great_a a_o impetuosity_n as_o to_o drive_v off_o all_o the_o encompass_v air_n from_o their_o centre_n dart_v asunder_o with_o great_a celerity_n and_o noise_n but_o be_v abundant_o more_o evident_a in_o the_o kindle_v of_o gunpowder_n where_o the_o impetuosity_n be_v so_o very_o great_a as_o to_o drive_v away_o not_o only_o all_o the_o encompass_v air_n but_o all_o other_o body_n though_o never_o so_o solid_a that_o hinder_v its_o expansion_n in_o the_o perform_n of_o which_o operation_n the_o cause_v a_o rarefaction_n in_o the_o part_n thereof_o whilst_o the_o part_n that_o be_v once_o actual_o separate_v by_o continual_a rebound_v one_o against_o another_o before_o they_o come_v to_o be_v at_o rest_n and_o quiet_o to_o touch_v each_o other_o prolong_v that_o first_o separation_n or_o vacuity_n between_o they_o this_o explication_n though_o it_o be_v somewhat_o difficult_a yet_o i_o
