my_o comfort_n and_o for_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v for_o which_o god_n do_v hide_v his_o face_n and_o this_o be_v the_o sad_a objection_n and_o reason_v of_o many_o a_o poor_a soul_n now_o there_o be_v four_o particular_n why_o a_o child_n of_o god_n shall_v not_o be_v thus_o deject_v although_o he_o may_v be_v cast_v down_o under_o sin_n 1._o if_o thou_o can_v not_o retain_v the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n yet_o if_o you_o retain_v the_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o sin_n for_o which_o thou_o have_v lose_v the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n to_o be_v much_o in_o the_o latter_a though_o thou_o have_v little_a of_o the_o former_a to_o grow_v down_o ward_n in_o humiliation_n thou_o do_v grow_v but_o little_a upward_a in_o consolation_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n hosea_n 14._o 5._o i_o will_v be_v as_o a_o dew_n unto_o israel_n he_o shall_v grow_v as_o a_o lily_n or_o blossom_n or_o flourish_n and_o cast_v forth_o or_o strike_v forth_o his_o root_n as_o lebanon_n you_o that_o do_v blossom_n like_o the_o lily_n though_o you_o may_v not_o so_o much_o blossom_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o comfort_n yet_o if_o you_o do_v grow_v downward_o strike_v your_o root_n downward_o by_o the_o sense_n and_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o grow_v downward_o in_o humiliation_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n it_o be_v better_a and_o safe_a for_o to_o strike_v thy_o root_n of_o grace_n downward_o in_o grow_v in_o the_o sap_n of_o humiliation_n then_o to_o grow_v upward_o and_o flourish_v in_o the_o sense_n of_o pardoning-grace_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o the_o one_o be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n and_o necessary_a to_o the_o save_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o the_o other_o be_v necessary_a towards_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o the_o one_o be_v more_o needful_a than_o the_o other_o if_o i_o be_v put_v to_o my_o choice_n i_o have_v rather_o want_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n then_o to_o want_v the_o sense_n of_o my_o own_o sinfulness_n the_o lord_n have_v rather_o to_o see_v his_o people_n to_o be_v in_o mourn_a weed_n then_o to_o be_v in_o garment_n of_o pleasantness_n if_o god_n do_v not_o see_v thy_o face_n full_a of_o smile_n yet_o if_o he_o see_v thy_o eye_n full_a of_o tear_n that_o be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o he_o though_o you_o may_v want_v the_o light_n of_o god_n countenance_n yet_o if_o you_o have_v the_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o sinfulness_n that_o do_v eclipse_v the_o light_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o thy_o soul_n thou_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o be_v too_o much_o cast_v down_o under_o sin_n 2._o in_o case_n thou_o be_v cast_v down_o for_o sin_n yet_o if_o you_o can_v love_n jesus_n christ_n real_o you_o need_v not_o be_v discourage_v when_o you_o do_v not_o know_v serious_o that_o jesus_n christ_n do_v love_v you_o yet_o though_o thou_o do_v not_o know_v thou_o be_v belove_v yet_o to_o love_n christ_n in_o this_o time_n thou_o need_v not_o to_o trouble_v thyself_o and_o though_o thou_o have_v not_o see_v jesus_n christ_n yet_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o by_o faith_n to_o apply_v jesus_n christ_n to_o thy_o soul_n if_o this_o have_v be_v thy_o work_n and_o thou_o can_v say_v so_o you_o may_v be_v confident_a that_o christ_n love_v you_o true_o though_o it_o may_v not_o be_v apparent_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v strong_a because_o that_o we_o can_v never_o love_v jesus_n christ_n until_o he_o first_o love_v we_o a_o man_n be_v in_o trouble_n of_o mind_n want_v the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n he_o say_v that_o he_o never_o know_v what_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n mean_v and_o what_o it_o be_v to_o his_o soul_n but_o yet_o he_o can_v say_v that_o he_o do_v rest_n and_o believe_v on_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o though_o he_o know_v not_o that_o christ_n love_v he_o yet_o he_o do_v desire_n to_o love_n christ_n so_o i_o say_v to_o you_o although_o you_o can_v sensible_o feel_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n to_o thy_o soul_n yet_o if_o thou_o can_v dear_o love_v jesus_n christ_n be_v confident_a that_o christ_n love_v thou_o 3._o in_o case_n you_o want_v the_o quiet_v and_o comfort_v work_n of_o the_o spirit_n yet_o if_o you_o have_v the_o quick_a ning_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o too_o much_o cast_v down_o thou_o that_o can_v act_v grace_n although_o thou_o do_v want_v comfort_n and_o although_o thou_o have_v not_o the_o sight_n of_o thy_o grace_n sensible_o to_o feel_v and_o find_v the_o comfort_n of_o they_o yet_o if_o thou_o can_v live_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o grace_n in_o this_o case_n thou_o need_v not_o to_o be_v trouble_v &_o cast_v down_o if_o it_o be_v with_o thy_o soul_n as_o with_o a_o well_o that_o have_v two_o bucket_n while_o one_o be_v down_o the_o other_o be_v still_o up_o so_o if_o one_o bucket_n of_o thy_o soul_n be_v down_o and_o thou_o be_v deject_v for_o want_v of_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n favour_n and_o gracious_a love_n to_o thy_o soul_n yet_o if_o the_o other_o bucket_n be_v up_o in_o thy_o live_n and_o exercise_v of_o grace_n though_o thou_o want_v sensible_a comfort_n yet_o this_o be_v matter_n of_o joy_n and_o comfort_n to_o thy_o spirit_n if_o you_o be_v deject_v for_o want_n of_o
comfort_n yet_o if_o you_o abound_v in_o grace_n it_o be_v matter_n of_o joy_n do_v i_o speak_v to_o any_o this_o day_n that_o be_v cloud_v with_o sin_n in_o the_o want_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o comfort_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o can_v see_v and_o can_v feel_v the_o sense_n and_o manifestation_n of_o god_n love_n as_o other_o do_v go_v and_o pray_v and_o mourn_v and_o be_v humble_v for_o thy_o sin_n and_o act_v thy_o grace_n and_o though_o you_o do_v go_v without_o the_o manisestation_n of_o god_n love_n yet_o in_o this_o case_n thou_o be_v not_o to_o be_v too_o much_o cast_v down_o god_n have_v rather_o see_v and_o hear_v your_o grace_n then_o that_o you_o shall_v see_v they_o yourselves_o cant._n 8_o 13._o 4._o though_o thou_o be_v cast_v down_o for_o sin_n yet_o be_v not_o trouble_v in_o case_n it_o have_v this_o gracious_a effect_n upon_o thou_o as_o to_o make_v thou_o to_o be_v more_o watchful_a against_o sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v more_o than_o thou_o be_v before_o so_o when_o thou_o shall_v be_v afraid_a of_o sin_n and_o to_o hate_v sin_n in_o this_o case_n thou_o have_v cause_n to_o bless_v god_n say_v the_o psalmist_n my_o heart_n be_v not_o turn_v back_o neither_o have_v we_o slip_v again_o from_o thy_o way_n all_o this_o be_v come_v upon_o we_o and_o yet_o have_v we_o not_o forget_v thou_o nor_o deal_v false_o against_o thy_o covenant_n cur_n heart_n have_v not_o turn_v backward_o neither_o have_v our_o step_n swarve_v from_o thy_o path_n so_o when_o you_o can_v say_v although_o god_n have_v cover_v i_o with_o the_o shadow_n of_o death_n and_o though_o there_o be_v a_o cloud_n between_o god_n and_o my_o soul_n yet_o i_o be_o afraid_a of_o sin_v against_o he_o and_o i_o be_o afraid_a of_o offend_v he_o and_o i_o have_v not_o go_v out_o of_o his_o path_n for_o all_o this_o in_o this_o case_n you_o may_v be_v comfort_v though_o you_o do_v apprehend_v that_o christ_n have_v turn_v his_o back_n upon_o you_o and_o yet_o to_o say_v i_o will_v not_o for_o all_o the_o world_n leave_v live_v upon_o and_o to_o jesus_n christ_n in_o a_o way_n of_o love_n and_o obedience_n obj._n 2_o if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o many_o soul_n may_v be_v cast_v down_o for_o sin_n and_o yet_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v their_o sin_n to_o be_v so_o much_o cast_v down_o but_o they_o be_v to_o labour_v against_o this_o trouble_n and_o cast_v down_o for_o sin_n do_v not_o this_o nourish_v a_o principle_n of_o presumption_n in_o many_o a_o man_n breast_n for_o to_o presume_v of_o his_o salvation_n and_o to_o make_v he_o bold_a in_o sin_v against_o god_n see_v you_o say_v they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v trouble_v answ_n it_o be_v true_a if_o this_o doctrine_n be_v not_o well_o use_v and_o wise_o handle_v it_o may_v for_o as_o it_o may_v comfort_v one_o soul_n it_o will_v cause_v a_o hundred_o to_o run_v into_o a_o presumptuous_a condition_n for_o in_o some_o case_n god_n do_v suspend_v his_o favour_n and_o hide_v his_o face_n from_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v for_o sin_n you_o have_v cause_n of_o mourning_n in_o this_o particular_a and_o that_o in_o these_o five_o case_n 1._o thou_o have_v cause_n to_o hang_v down_o thy_o head_n with_o sorrow_n thou_o that_o want_v the_o sense_n and_o manifestation_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n to_o thy_o soul_n and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n thou_o do_v want_v the_o sense_n and_o sight_n of_o sin_n thou_o have_v a_o trouble_a spirit_n and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n thou_o have_v not_o a_o trouble_a conscience_n thou_o want_v the_o sense_n of_o christ_n love_n to_o thy_o soul_n and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n thou_o want_v the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o thy_o sin_n against_o jesus_n christ_n many_o man_n be_v in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v many_o man_n that_o will_v say_v that_o they_o do_v not_o know_v whether_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n whether_o they_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n or_o the_o child_n of_o wrath_n whether_o christ_n love_v they_o or_o not_o and_o yet_o no_o sin_n trouble_v they_o and_o no_o guilt_n disquiet_v they_o but_o they_o presume_v of_o grace_n and_o presume_v of_o pardon_n when_o for_o any_o thing_n thou_o know_v there_o be_v but_o a_o step_n between_o thou_o and_o hell_n and_o in_o this_o case_n thy_o condition_n be_v very_o sad_a 2._o you_o that_o say_v that_o you_o want_v the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n and_o yet_o not_o at_o that_o time_n want_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o loss_n and_o absence_n of_o that_o love_n you_o say_v you_o once_o have_v that_o man_n sad_a spectacle_n that_o grieve_v for_o the_o loss_n of_o a_o estate_n but_o not_o for_o the_o loss_n of_o god_n when_o a_o man_n shall_v not_o know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o or_o not_o and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n for_o all_o this_o to_o take_v no_o care_n though_o his_o state_n be_v a_o lose_a state_n to_o lose_v grace_n and_o to_o lose_v heaven_n this_o case_n be_v sad_a to_o be_v in_o such_o danger_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o that_o danger_n 3._o your_o case_n be_v sad_a in_o case_n when_o you_o want_v a_o sense_n of_o christ_n love_n to_o your_o soul_n and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n you_o want_v act_n of_o love_n and_o to_o express_v your_o love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n you_o will_v fain_o know_v whether_o jesus_n christ_n love_v you_o or_o not_o yet_o never_o labour_v to_o know_v and_o examine_v whether_o you_o love_v jesus_n christ_n or_o not_o in_o draw_v out_o your_o soul_n in_o a_o way_n of_o love_n to_o he_o but_o instead_o of_o love_a jesus_n christ_n you_o do_v draw_v forth_o regining_n against_o god_n against_o jesus_n christ_n when_o you_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o trust_v in_o he_o as_o you_o shall_v repine_v against_o he_o and_o not_o say_v with_o job_n though_o be_v kill_v i_o yet_o will_v i_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o though_o i_o perish_v yet_o i_o will_v perish_v in_o trust_v in_o he_o if_o under_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n you_o also_o want_v love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n your_o case_n be_v sad_a 4._o at_o that_o time_n when_o you_o want_v the_o comfort_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n you_o want_v the_o quicken_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n thy_o case_n be_v sad_a when_o you_o shall_v not_o only_o want_v comfort_n but_o want_v grace_n too_o this_o make_v thy_o condition_n to_o be_v sad_a to_o be_v disquiet_v for_o want_v of_o comfort_n and_o to_o be_v disquiet_v for_o want_v of_o grace_n o_o look_v into_o your_o own_o heart_n you_o that_o want_v comfort_n do_v you_o want_v grace_n too_o have_v you_o no_o tenderness_n of_o conscience_n no_o remorse_n of_o spirit_n no_o love_n to_o duty_n no_o zeal_n for_o god_n no_o faith_n to_o live_v by_o no_o hope_n in_o christ_n to_o hang_v upon_o no_o love_n to_o christ_n in_o thy_o soul_n no_o repentance_n for_o sin_n in_o this_o case_n thy_o condition_n be_v very_o sad_a 5._o when_o thou_o have_v be_v a_o long_a time_n under_o the_o loss_n of_o comfort_n and_o in_o trouble_n of_o mind_n and_o perplexity_n of_o spirit_n and_o yet_o so_o to_o live_v without_o any_o inquiry_n how_o thou_o may_v get_v out_o of_o this_o sad_a condition_n and_o to_o get_v the_o
