fear_v the_o adversary_n that_o oppose_v themselves_o against_o we_o for_o when_o they_o persecute_v we_o from_o one_o city_n to_o another_o beat_v we_o imprison_v we_o and_o every_o way_n afflict_v we_o who_o hurt_n they_o even_o themselves_o they_o run_v themselves_o upon_o the_o rock_n and_o bring_v upon_o themselves_o swift_a damnation_n they_o think_v they_o have_v great_a mastery_n over_o c._n 25._o slay_v by_o that_o cruel_a tyrant_n and_o persecutor_n nero._n whatsoever_o then_o in_o this_o epistle_n be_v speak_v of_o the_o apostle_n band_n you_o must_v understand_v it_o mean_v of_o his_o first_o imprisonment_n at_o rome_n by_o the_o thing_n then_o which_o come_v unto_o he_o in_o this_o place_n we_o must_v understand_v his_o band_n in_o his_o first_o imprisonment_n at_o rome_n now_o what_o of_o these_o these_o say_v the_o apostle_n be_v turn_v rather_o to_o the_o further_a of_o the_o gospel_n then_o to_o the_o hinder_v of_o it_o contrary_a to_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o do_v cast_v he_o into_o prison_n for_o they_o hope_v that_o his_o band_n will_v prevail_v much_o to_o hinder_v the_o course_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o he_o tell_v the_o philippian_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v turn_v they_o rather_o to_o the_o further_a then_o to_o the_o hinder_v of_o the_o gospel_n but_o how_o can_v that_o be_v very_o well_o for_o so_o his_o band_n in_o christ_n i_o which_o he_o sustain_v for_o christ_n his_o sake_n and_o the_o gospel_n be_v famous_a throughout_o all_o the_o judgement_n hall_n i_o throughout_o all_o the_o emperor_n court_n and_o in_o all_o other_o place_n both_o of_o the_o city_n and_o of_o other_o country_n but_o how_o be_v his_o band_n famous_a in_o all_o these_o place_n namely_o because_o by_o that_o occasion_n the_o gospel_n come_v to_o be_v know_v and_o to_o be_v believe_v by_o many_o in_o all_o these_o place_n this_o be_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o his_o band_n by_o they_o the_o gospel_n be_v far_o disperse_v again_o through_o his_o band_n and_o constancy_n therein_o many_o of_o the_o brethren_n in_o the_o lord_n many_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n of_o the_o church_n be_v embolden_v more_o frank_o and_o free_o to_o speak_v the_o word_n i_o to_o profess_v and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n then_o before_o they_o dare_v and_o this_o be_v the_o second_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o band_n by_o they_o the_o teacher_n of_o the_o word_n take_v courage_n to_o speak_v the_o word_n more_o bold_o then_o before_o they_o have_v do_v plain_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o contrary_a to_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o gospel_n his_o band_n be_v turn_v rather_o to_o the_o further_a then_o to_o the_o hinder_v of_o the_o gospel_n inasmuch_o as_o by_o occasion_n of_o his_o band_n both_o the_o gospel_n be_v far_o spread_v and_o disperse_v then_o before_o and_o likewise_o the_o preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n more_o encourage_v and_o embolden_v to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n then_o before_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n now_o to_o the_o observation_n here_o may_v be_v note_v the_o apostle_n carefulness_n to_o take_v away_o the_o scandal_n and_o offence_n of_o his_o band_n wherewith_o the_o philippian_n may_v happy_o be_v trouble_v
his_o people_n we_o shall_v not_o now_o need_v other_o proof_n than_o this_o of_o our_o apostle_n in_o this_o place_n the_o philippian_n have_v embrace_v the_o faith_n of_o jesus_n christ_n they_o abound_v in_o knowledge_n and_o in_o judgement_n they_o stand_v fast_o in_o the_o faith_n notwithstanding_o their_o assault_n by_o false_a apostle_n they_o be_v careful_a over_o he_o and_o communicate_v to_o his_o affliction_n they_o be_v excellent_a in_o many_o grace_n so_o that_o our_o apostle_n have_v great_a cause_n to_o have_v great_a joy_n over_o they_o but_o because_o of_o some_o contention_n and_o vainglory_n among_o they_o his_o joy_n be_v not_o full_a a_o sufficient_a precedent_n for_o the_o pastor_n that_o he_o count_v not_o his_o joy_n full_a so_o long_o as_o any_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o his_o people_n which_o may_v serve_v to_o admonish_v the_o pastor_n to_o labour_v that_o nothing_o may_v be_v amiss_o among_o his_o people_n either_o touch_a life_n or_o doctrine_n that_o so_o his_o joy_n may_v be_v full_a and_o that_o his_o people_n may_v be_v the_o crown_n of_o his_o rejoice_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n at_o his_o come_n but_o i_o come_v unto_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v in_o general_n the_o thing_n which_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v the_o philippian_n in_o general_a be_v that_o they_o be_v like_o mind_a that_o be_v like_o affection_a have_v their_o affection_n like_n and_o desire_v set_v on_o the_o same_o thing_n a_o evident_a argument_n that_o they_o be_v not_o like_v mind_v as_o also_o the_o rest_n which_o follow_v be_v that_o some_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o they_o and_o in_o that_o he_o deal_v so_o earnest_o with_o they_o that_o these_o thing_n may_v be_v amend_v in_o they_o it_o show_v that_o these_o be_v thing_n which_o be_v careful_o to_o be_v procure_v regard_v and_o maintain_v lecture_n xxv_o philip_n 2._o verse_n 2._o that_o you_o be_v like_o mind_a have_v the_o same_o love_n be_v of_o one_o accord_n and_o of_o one_o judgement_n that_o nothing_o be_v do_v through_o contention_n etc._n etc._n we_o have_v hear_v the_o manner_n of_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n and_o therein_o four_o very_o pathetical_a argument_n couch_v to_o persuade_v the_o thing_n whereunto_o he_o exhort_v all_o so_o close_o follow_v and_o so_o passionate_o urge_v as_o that_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o exhortation_n can_v not_o be_v devise_v more_o effectual_a to_o persuade_v the_o thing_n whereunto_o he_o exhort_v if_o there_o be_v etc._n etc._n it_o remain_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n we_o speak_v only_o of_o that_o which_o i_o take_v to_o be_v only_o a_o motive_n prefix_v before_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o exhortation_n in_o these_o word_n fulfil_v my_o joy_n now_o we_o be_v to_o proceed_v unto_o the_o main_a matter_n of_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n which_o be_v that_o they_o be_v like_o mind_a have_v the_o same_o love_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o matter_n of_o the_o exhortation_n this_o in_o general_n appear_v that_o some_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o they_o there_o be_v not_o that_o love_n and_o concord_n among_o they_o nor_o that_o humility_n which_o shall_v he_o in_o they_o many_o thing_n be_v do_v among_o they_o through_o contention_n through_o vainglory_n through_o self-seeking_a of_o their_o own_o thing_n so_o that_o though_o many_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v much_o commend_v in_o they_o yet_o be_v some_o thing_n likewise_o to_o be_v reform_v in_o they_o which_o hinder_v the_o course_n of_o that_o christian_a conversation_n which_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n jesus_n whence_o i_o observe_v in_o general_a what_o the_o state_n even_o of_o the_o best_a reform_a church_n and_o so_o of_o the_o most_o holy_a man_n be_v no_o church_n so_o reform_v no_o man_n so_o sanctify_v but_o that_o many_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o they_o though_o many_o thing_n be_v much_o to_o be_v commend_v in_o they_o yet_o some_o thing_n likewise_o be_v still_o to_o be_v reform_v in_o they_o look_v into_o all_o those_o church_n unto_o which_o our_o apostle_n write_v his_o epistle_n you_o shall_v not_o find_v any_o of_o they_o so_o commend_v for_o embrace_v the_o truth_n and_o for_o stand_v fast_o in_o the_o truth_n as_o this_o church_n of_o philippi_n he_o give_v indeed_o testimony_n unto_o the_o galathian_o that_o they_o be_v sometime_o such_o as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v possible_a will_v have_v pluck_v out_o their_o own_o eye_n and_o have_v give_v they_o unto_o he_o so_o love_v they_o he_o and_o the_o truth_n which_o he_o teach_v but_o quick_o be_v they_o remove_v to_o another_o gospel_n 1.6_o gal._n 1.6_o as_o the_o apostle_n witness_v whereas_o the_o philippian_n still_o stand_v so_o fast_o that_o the_o apostle_n be_v persuade_v that_o he_o that_o have_v begin_v that_o good_a work_n in_o they_o will_v perform_v it_o until_o the_o day_n of_o jesus_n christ_n yet_o here_o you_o see_v that_o some_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o they_o again_o look_v into_o those_o seven_o church_n unto_o which_o john_n write_v in_o the_o apocalyps_n and_o there_o you_o shall_v see_v that_o some_o be_v fall_v other_o decay_v some_o be_v proud_a other_o negligent_a of_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o those_o church_n the_o church_n of_o smyrna_n and_o the_o church_n of_o philadelphia_n be_v there_o most_o commend_v yet_o in_o both_o those_o church_n by_o the_o right_a understanding_n of_o those_o epistle_n that_o be_v write_v to_o they_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o there_o be_v some_o among_o they_o who_o profess_v themselves_o to_o be_v good_a christian_n whereas_o indeed_o they_o be_v no_o better_a than_o a_o synagogue_n and_o sink_v of_o satan_n again_o look_v into_o the_o reform_a church_n ever_o since_o that_o time_n unto_o this_o day_n and_o at_o this_o day_n and_o still_o you_o shall_v see_v that_o as_o in_o those_o seven_o church_n of_o asia_n so_o in_o these_o there_o be_v and_o be_v as_o many_o thing_n to_o be_v commend_v so_o likewise_o many_o thing_n to_o be_v reprehend_v and_o so_o long_o as_o the_o church_n be_v militant_a upon_o earth_n it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o she_o shall_v be_v black_a black_a i_o say_v not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o her_o affliction_n whereby_o her_o belove_a do_v sometime_o prove_v she_o and_o sometime_o chastise_v she_o but_o black_a also_o in_o respect_n of_o her_o blemish_n imperfection_n and_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o her_o affliction_n for_o all_o man_n while_o they_o carry_v about_o with_o they_o the_o earthly_a house_n of_o this_o tabernacle_n unto_o what_o degree_n of_o perfection_n in_o faith_n knowledge_n or_o other_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o ever_o they_o be_v grow_v have_v still_o need_n to_o pray_v o_o lord_n increase_v our_o faith_n our_o knowledge_n and_o unto_o what_o perfection_n in_o innocence_n obedience_n or_o the_o like_a they_o be_v grow_v yet_o still_o they_o be_v teach_v to_o pray_v o_o lord_n forgive_v we_o our_o debt_n and_o trespass_n for_o here_o we_o know_v in_o part_n we_o believe_v in_o part_n we_o love_v in_o part_n we_o obey_v in_o part_n and_o our_o great_a perfection_n be_v but_o great_a imperfection_n while_o we_o live_v here_o at_o home_n in_o the_o body_n 13.9_o 1_o cor._n 13.9_o as_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n show_v and_o so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v clothe_v with_o corruption_n if_o we_o say_v we_o have_v no_o sin_n we_o deceive_v ourselves_o 1.8_o 1_o joh._n 1.8_o and_o truth_n be_v not_o in_o us._n that_o which_o be_v in_o part_n either_o in_o knowledge_n or_o in_o love_n or_o in_o obedience_n or_o in_o the_o like_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n shall_v be_v abolish_v our_o imperfection_n shall_v be_v take_v away_o and_o we_o shall_v be_v make_v perfect_a but_o where_o and_o when_o not_o here_o otherwise_o then_o by_o imputation_n but_o then_o and_o there_o when_o and_o where_o corruption_n shall_v put_v on_o incorruption_n and_o mortality_n shall_v put_v on_o immortality_n as_o the_o former_a place_n to_o the_o corinthian_n show_v 10._o ver_fw-la 10._o and_o the_o church_n shall_v be_v present_v unto_o christ_n jesus_n her_o belove_a not_o have_v spot_n or_o wrinkle_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n but_o pure_a and_o holy_a and_o without_o blame_n but_o then_o when_o she_o shall_v be_v make_v glorious_a he_o weep_v and_o be_v much_o trouble_v for_o he_o well_o then_o epaphroditus_n and_o the_o philippian_n may_v be_v full_a of_o heaviness_n each_o for_o other_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o love_n and_o tender_a affection_n which_o they_o have_v each_o to_o other_o and_o yet_o may_v they_o well_o both_o acknowledge_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n in_o his_o sickness_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o heaviness_n each_o in_o other_o to_o the_o point_n in_o general_a in_o one_o word_n i_o say_v that_o in_o that_o love_n which_o we_o bear_v and_o aught_o to_o bear_v one_o towards_o another_o we_o may_v be_v sorry_a one_o for_o the_o thing_n that_o befall_v unto_o another_o albeit_o we_o know_v certain_o of_o the_o providence_n of_o almighty_a god_n therein_o yet_o so_o in_o love_n one_o towards_o another_o we_o must_v be_v sorrowful_a one_o for_o another_o that_o our_o faith_n in_o god_n providence_n must_v stint_v our_o sorrow_n that_o it_o be_v not_o exceed_v sorrowful_a because_o we_o know_v that_o all_o thing_n work_v for_o the_o best_a for_o god_n child_n lecture_n xliv_o philip_n 2._o verse_n 27._o and_o no_o doubt_n he_o be_v sick_a very_o near_o unto_o death_n but_o god_n have_v mercy_n on_o he_o and_o not_o on_o he_o only_o etc._n etc._n and_o no_o doubt_n he_o be_v sick_a etc._n etc._n in_o these_o word_n the_o holy_a apostle_n 1._o confirm_v that_o report_n which_o the_o philippian_n have_v hear_v touch_v their_o minister_n sickness_n that_o it_o be_v no_o vain_a or_o false_a report_n but_o a_o very_a true_a report_n and_o second_o he_o signify_v his_o recovery_n and_o restore_v unto_o health_n that_o the_o report_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v be_v true_a the_o apostle_n do_v assure_v they_o first_o affirm_v his_o sickness_n and_o no_o doubt_n he_o be_v sick_a and_o then_o the_o extremity_n of_o his_o sickness_n very_o near_o unto_o death_n in_o the_o signification_n of_o his_o recovery_n and_o restore_n unto_o health_n which_o be_v in_o the_o next_o word_n the_o apostle_n 1._o set_v down_o the_o cause_n of_o his_o recovery_n which_o be_v god_n mercy_n but_o god_n have_v mercy_n on_o he_o 2._o the_o extent_n of_o god_n mercy_n herein_o which_o be_v not_o to_o epaphroditus_n alone_o but_o to_o paul_n also_o and_o not_o on_o he_o only_o but_o on_o i_o also_o 3._o the_o cause_n why_o the_o lord_n in_o mercy_n to_o paul_n also_o restore_v he_o unto_o health_n to_o wit_n lest_o he_o shall_v have_v sorrow_n upon_o sorrow_n i._o lest_o his_o sorrow_n which_o he_o have_v by_o his_o own_o bond_n and_o imprisonment_n shall_v be_v child_n of_o god_n and_o most_o faithful_a servant_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v subject_a as_o unto_o many_o misery_n and_o trouble_n and_o infirmity_n of_o this_o life_n so_o unto_o sickness_n and_o disease_n of_o the_o body_n how_o faithful_a a_o servant_n of_o jesus_n christ_n timothy_n be_v you_o hear_v a_o little_a before_o upon_o occasion_n of_o the_o apostle_n his_o promise_n to_o send_v he_o unto_o the_o philippian_n vers_n 19_o and_o how_o subject_a he_o be_v unto_o sickness_n may_v appear_v by_o that_o advice_n which_o the_o apostle_n give_v unto_o he_o in_o his_o former_a epistle_n unto_o he_o 5.23_o 1_o tim._n 5.23_o where_o he_o advise_v he_o to_o drink_v no_o long_o water_n but_o to_o use_v a_o little_a wine_n for_o his_o stomach_n sake_n and_o for_o his_o often_o infirmity_n of_o epaphroditus_n his_o sickness_n likewise_o you_o see_v how_o plain_a testimony_n the_o apostle_n give_v in_o this_o place_n nay_o what_o child_n of_o god_n free_v or_o exempt_v from_o look_v unto_o such_o hot_a ague_n unto_o such_o sharp_a and_o strange_a and_o pestilential_a disease_n and_o sickness_n as_o be_v now_o general_o among_o we_o and_o see_v whether_o he_o have_v not_o begin_v to_o do_v with_o we_o as_o he_o threaten_v in_o his_o law_n sure_o for_o our_o sin_n even_o because_o we_o have_v not_o obey_v his_o voice_n and_o do_v after_o his_o commandment_n he_o have_v some_o such_o like_a rod_n that_o so_o they_o may_v see_v their_o own_o error_n and_o be_v heal_v for_o this_o cause_n say_v the_o apostle_n many_o be_v weak_a and_o sick_a among_o you_o 30._o 30._o and_o many_o sleep_n for_o this_o cause_n for_o what_o cause_n even_o for_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n his_o body_n in_o come_v unto_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n natural_o they_o be_v bend_v and_o wherein_o sometime_o they_o will_v walk_v if_o they_o be_v not_o hold_v back_o as_o with_o a_o bridle_n for_o who_o delight_n in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v so_o entire_a and_o so_o altogether_o uncorrupt_a before_o he_o that_o he_o make_v as_o he_o shall_v do_v his_o law_n his_o whole_a delight_n and_o his_o counsellor_n nay_o who_o path_n be_v so_o straight_o that_o he_o have_v not_o a_o overween_a delight_n in_o some_o crooked_a bypath_n or_o who_o will_n and_o desire_n and_o affection_n be_v so_o sanctify_v that_o they_o be_v not_o often_o incline_v and_o sometime_o carry_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o main_a stream_n unto_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o therefore_o the_o lord_n only_o wise_a know_v best_o what_o be_v best_a for_o his_o child_n sometime_o visit_v they_o with_o sickness_n that_o so_o be_v exercise_v with_o his_o rod_n they_o may_v not_o run_v into_o such_o danger_n of_o body_n and_o soul_n as_o otherwise_o they_o will_v a_o three_o reason_n why_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v sick_a sometime_o be_v that_o thereby_o he_o may_v make_v trial_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o of_o their_o patience_n to_o see_v whether_o they_o can_v be_v conrent_a as_o to_o receive_v health_n so_o to_o receive_v sickness_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o whether_o as_o in_o health_n so_o in_o sickness_n they_o will_v put_v their_o trust_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o submit_v themselves_o unto_o his_o will_n for_o both_o health_n and_o sickness_n they_o be_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o both_o in_o health_n and_o in_o sickness_n we_o shall_v put_v our_o trust_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o submit_v ourselves_o unto_o his_o will_n yet_o so_o choice_n we_o be_v that_o we_o can_v be_v content_a to_o receive_v health_n from_o the_o lord_n but_o hardly_o to_o receive_v sickness_n from_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o weak_a we_o be_v even_o the_o best_a of_o we_o that_o howsoever_o we_o do_v in_o health_n yet_o in_o sickness_n we_o can_v hardly_o submit_v ourselves_o unto_o god_n his_o will_n and_o oftentimes_o more_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o physician_n then_o in_o the_o lord_n 16._o 2_o cron._n 16._o as_o we_o read_v that_o that_o good_a king_n of_o judah_n asa_n do_v therein_o decline_v from_o that_o right_a path_n wherein_o he_o ought_v to_o have_v walk_v sometime_o then_o as_o i_o say_v god_n child_n be_v sick_a that_o the_o lord_n their_o god_n may_v so_o try_v whether_o they_o will_v still_o cleave_v fast_o unto_o he_o and_o patient_o submit_v themselves_o unto_o his_o will_n a_o four_o reason_n why_o the_o loâ—d_n sometime_o visit_v his_o child_n with_o sickness_n be_v that_o they_o also_o may_v have_v a_o far_a trial_n of_o the_o merciful_a goodness_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o they_o for_o albeit_o his_o child_n be_v never_o without_o great_a experience_n of_o his_o merciful_a goodness_n towards_o they_o yet_o wherein_o have_v they_o great_a experience_n thereof_o and_o wherein_o their_o soul_n more_o to_o rejoice_v then_o that_o in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o sickness_n he_o assi_v they_o with_o the_o comfort_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o give_v they_o strength_n and_o patience_n to_o endure_v what_o he_o lay_v upon_o they_o and_o suffer_v not_o their_o faith_n or_o their_o hope_n to_o fail_v but_o so_o prepare_v they_o unto_o he_o that_o come_v death_n come_v life_n they_o can_v willing_o embrace_v either_o because_o they_o know_v that_o come_v death_n come_v life_n they_o be_v the_o lord_n a_o especial_a great_a goodness_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o his_o child_n whereof_o they_o have_v such_o trial_n in_o time_n of_o their_o sickness_n as_o that_o thereby_o not_o themselves_n alone_o but_o such_o as_o be_v about_o they_o be_v and_o may_v be_v great_o comfort_v and_o righteousness_n to_o be_v by_o the_o law_n or_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o can_v do_v they_o make_v the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o resurrection_n his_o victory_n his_o kingdom_n his_o glory_n himself_o unprofitable_a and_o of_o none_o effect_n and_o so_o be_v enemy_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n so_o again_o the_o apostle_n say_v you_o be_v abolish_v from_o

into_o heaven_n in_o our_o heart_n or_o soul_n we_o never_o raise_v our_o thought_n our_o desire_n or_o our_o affection_n so_o high_a we_o never_o taste_v in_o ourselves_o any_o sparkle_n of_o those_o joy_n which_o be_v prepare_v to_o be_v show_v in_o the_o last_o time_n and_o therefore_o we_o long_v not_o after_o heaven_n but_o we_o rather_o love_v to_o live_v here_o on_o earth_n these_o be_v
