XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was leâ—t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto

XIII 1 Amnon loving Tamar by Jonadabs counsel feigning himself sick ravisheth her 15 He hateth her and shamefully turneth her away 19 Absalom entertaineth her and concealeth his purpose 23 At a sheep-shearing among all the kings sons he killeth Amnon 30 David grieving at the news is comforted by Jonadab 37 Absalom fleeth to Telmai at Geshur ANd it came to pass after this that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister whose name was Tamar and Amnon the son of David loved her 2 And Amnon was so vexed that he fell sick for his sister Tamar for she was a virgin and †Heb. it was marvellous o◠hidden in the eyes of Amnon Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her 3 But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah Davids brother and Jonadab was a very subtil man 4 And he said unto him Why art thou being the kings son †Heb. thin lean †Heb. morning by morning from day to day wilt thou not tell me And Amnon said unto him I love Tamar my brother Absaloms sister 5 And Jonadab said unto him Lay thee down on thy bed and make thy self sick and when thy father cometh to see thee say unto him I pray thee let my sister Tamar come and give me meat and dress the meat in my sight that I may see it and eat it at her hand 6 ¶ So Amnon lay down and made himself sick and when the king was come to see him Amnon said unto the king I pray thee let Tamar my sister come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight that I may eat at her hand 7 Then David sent home to Tamar saying Go now to thy brother Amnons house and dress him meat 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnons house and he was laid down and she took ‖ Or paste flour and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and did bake the cakes 9 And she took a pan and poured them out before him but he refused to eat And Amnon said Have out all men from me and they went out every man from him 10 And Amnon said unto Tamar Bring the meat into the chamber that I may eat of thine hand And Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother 11 And when she had brought them unto him to eat he took hold of her and said unto her Come lie with me my sister 12 And she answered him Nay my brother do not †Heb. humble me force me for * Lev. 18.9 †Heb. it ought not so to be done no such thing ought to be done in Israel do not thou this folly 13 And I whither shall I cause my shame to go and as for thee thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel now therefore I pray thee speak unto the king for he will not withhold me from thee 14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice but being stronger then she forced her and lay with her 15 ¶ Then Amnon hated her †Heb. with great hatred greatly exceedingly so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater then the love wherewith he had loved her and Amnon said unto her Arise be gone 16 And she said unto him There is no cause this evil in sending me away is greater then the other that thou didst unto me But he would not hearken unto her 17 Then he called his servant that ministred unto him and said Put now this woman out from me and bolt the door after her 18 And she had a garment of divers colours upon her for with such robes were the kings daughters that were virgins apparelled Then his servant brought her out and bolted the door after her 19 ¶ And Tamar put ashes on her head and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her and laid her hand upon her head and went on crying 20 And Absalom her brother said unto her Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee but hold now thy peace my sister he is thy brother †Heb. set not thine heart regard not this thing So Tamar remained †Heb. and desolate desolate in her brother Absaloms house 21 ¶ But when king David heard of all these things he was very wroth 22 And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad for Absalom hated Amnon because he had forced his sister Tamar 23 ¶ And it came to pass after two full years that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor which is beside Ephraim and Absalom invited all the kings sons 24 And Absalom came to the king and said Behold now thy servant hath sheep-shearers let the king I beseech thee and his servants go with thy servant 25 And the king said to Absalom Nay my son let us not all now go lest we be chargeable unto thee And he pressed him howbeit he would not go but blessed him 26 Then said Absalom If not I pray thee let my brother Amnon go with us And the king said unto him Why should he go with thee 27 But Absalom pressed him that he let Amnon and all the kings sons go with him 28 ¶ Now Absalom had commanded his servants saying Mark ye now when Amnons heart is merry with wine and when I say unto you Smite Amnon then kill him fear not ‖ Or will you not since◠have commanded you have not I commanded you be couragious and be †Heb. sons of valour valiant 29 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded then all the kings sons arose and every man †Heb. rode gat him up upon his mule and fled 30 ¶ And it came to pass while they were in the way that tidings came to David saying Absalom hath slain all the kings sons and there is not one of them left 31 Then the king arose and tare his garments and lay on the earth and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent 32 And Jonadab the son of Shimeah Davids brother answered and said Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the kings sons for Amnon onely is dead for by the †Heb. mouth appointment of Absalom this hath been ‖ Or settled determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar 33 Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing
So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem and saw not the kings face 29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab to have sent him to the king but he would not come to him and when he sent again the second time he would not come 30 Therefore he said unto his servants See Joabs field is †Heb. near my place near mine and he hath barley there go and set in on fire and Absaloms servants set the field on fire 31 Then Joab arose and came to Absalom unto his house and said unto him Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire 32 And Absalom answered Joab Behold I sent unto thee saying Come hither that I may send thee to the king to say Wherefore am I come from Geshur it had been good for me to have been there still now therefore let me see the kings face and it there be any iniquity in me let him kill me 33 So Joab came to the king and told him and when he had called for Absalom he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king and the king kissed Absalom CHAP. XV. 1 Absalom by fair speeches and courtesies stealeth the hearts of Israel 7Vnder pretence of a vow he obtaineth leave to go to Hebron 10 He maketh there a great conspiracy 13 David upon the news fleeth from Jerusalem 19 Ittai would not leave him 24 Zadok and Abiathar are sent back with the ark 30 David and his company go up mount Olivet weeping 31 He curseth Abithophels counsel 32 Hushai is sent back with instructions ANd it came to pass after this that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses and fifty men to run before him 2 And Absalom rose up early and stood beside the way of the gate and it was so that when any man that had a controversy †Heb. to come came to the king for judgement then Absalom called unto him and said Of what city art thou And he said Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel 3 And Absalom said unto him See thy matters are good and right but ‖ Or none will hear thee from the king downward there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee 4 Absalom said moreover O that I were made judge in the land that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me and I would do him justice 5 And it was so that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance he put forth his hand and took him and kissed him 6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgement so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel 7 ¶ And it came to pass after fourty years that Absalom said unto the king I pray thee let me go and pay my vow which I have vowed unto the LORD in Hebron 8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria saying If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem then I will serve the LORD 9 And the king said unto him Go in peace So he arose and went to Hebron 10 ¶ But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel saying Assoon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet then ye shall say Absalom reigneth in Hebron 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem that were called and they went in their simplicity and they knew not any thing 12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite Davids counsellour from his city even from Giloh while he offered sacrifices and the conspiracy was strong for the people increased continually with Absalom 13 ¶ And there came a messenger to David saying The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom 14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem Arise and let us flee for we shall not else escape from Absalom make speed to depart lest he overtake us suddenly and †Heb. thrustâ— bring evil upon us and smite the city with the edge of the sword 15 And the kings servants said unto the king Behold thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall †Heb. choose appoint 16 And the king went forth and all his houshold †Heb. at his feet after him and the king left ten women which were concubines to keep the house 17 And the king went forth and all the people after him and tarried in a III. 1 Haman advanced by the king and despised by Mordecai seeketh revenge upon all the Jews 7 He casteth lots 8 He obtaineth by calumniation a decree of the king to put the Jews to death AFter these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes that were with him 2 And all the kings servants that were in the kings gate bowed and reverenced Haman for the king had so commanded concerning him but Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence 3 Then the kings servants which were in the kings gate said unto Mordecai Why transgressest thou the kings commandment 4 Now it came to pass when they spake daily unto him and he hearkned not unto them that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai his maâ—ters would stand for he had told them that he was a Jew 5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence then was Haman full of wrath 6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus even the people of Mordecai 7 ¶ In the first moneth that is the moneth Nisan in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus they cast Pur that is the lot before Haman from day to day and from moneth to moneth to the twelfth moneth that is the moneth Adar 8 ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the province of thy kingdom and their laws are diverse from all people neither keep they the kings laws therefore it is not †Heb. meet or eâ—uâ—l for the kings profit to suffer them 9 If it please the king let it be written †Heb. to destroy them that they may be destroyed and I will †Heb. weigh pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business to bring it into the kings treasuries 10 And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite the Jews ‖ Or oppressour enemy 11 And the king said unto Haman The silver is given to thee the people also to do with them as it seemeth good to thee 12 Then were the kings ‖ Or secretariâ—s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first moneth and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the kings lieutenants and to the governours that were over every province and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof and to every people after their language in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written and sealed with the kings ring 13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the kings provinces to destroy to kill and to cause to perish all Jews both young and old little children and women in one day even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth which is the moneth Adar and to take the spoil of them for a prey 14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people that they should be ready against that day 15 The posts went out being hastned by the kings commandment and the decree was given in Shushan the palace and the king and Haman sat down to drink but the city Shushan was perplexed CHAP. IV. 1 The great mourning of Mordecai and the Jews 4 Esther understanding it sendeth to Mordecai who sheweth the cause and adviseth her to undertake the suit 10 She excusing her self is threatned by Mordecai 15 She appointing a fast undertaketh the suit WHen Mordecai perceived all that was done Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry 2 And came even before the kings gate for none miâ—ht enter into the kings gate clothed with sackcloth 3 And in every province whithersoever the kings commandment and his decree came there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing and †Heb. sackcloth and ashes were laid under many many lay in sackcloth ashes 4 ¶ So Esthers maids and her †Heb. â—â—muchs chamberlains came told it her then was the queen exceedingly grieved she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him but he received it not 5 Then called Esther for Hatach one of the kings chamberlains †Heb. whom he had set before her whom he had appointed to attend upon her and gave him a commandment to Mordecai to know what it was and why it was 6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city which was before the kings gate 7 And Mordecai told him of all that had hapned unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the kings treasuries for the Jews to destroy them 8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them to shew it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people 9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai 10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach and gave him commandment unto Mordecai 11 All the kings servants and the people of the kings provinces do know that whosoever whether man or woman shall come unto the king into the inner court who is not called there is one saw of his to put him to death except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre that he may live

XV. 1 We do acknowledge the true God 7 The folly of idol-makers 14 and of the enemies of Gods people 15 because besides the idols of the Gentiles 18 they worshipped vile beasts BUt thou O God art gracious and true long-suffering and in mercy ordering all things 2 For if we sin we are thine knowing thy power but we will not sin knowing that we are counted thine 3 For to know thee is perfect righteousness yea to know thy power is the root of immortality 4 For neither did the mischievous invention of men deceive us nor an image spotted with divers colours the painters fruitless labour 5 The sight whereof ‖ Or turnetha reproach to the foolish enticeth fools to lust after it and so they desire the form of a dead image that hath no breath 6 Both they that make them they that desire them and they that worship them are lovers of evil things and are worthy to have such things to trust upon 7 For the * Rom. 9.21 potter tempering soft earth fashioneth every vessel with much labour for our service yea of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary but what is the use of either sort the potter himself is the judge 8 And employing his labours lewdly he maketh a vain god of the same clay even he which a little before was made of earth himself and within a little while after returneth to the

III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2â— 12 20. Who hath found out her place or who hath come into her treasures 16 Where are the princes of the heathen become and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth 17 They that had their pastime with the fouls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold wherein men trust and made no end of their getting 18 For they that wrought in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable 19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their steads 20 Young men have seen light and dwelt upon the earth but the way of knowledge have they not known 21 Nor understood the paths thereof nor laid hold of it their children were far off from that way 22 It hath not been heard of in Chanaan neither hath it been seen in Theman 23 The

XIX 2 Christ healeth the sick 3 answereth the Pharisees concerning divorcement 10 sheweth when marriage is necessary 13 receiveth little children 16 instructeth the young man how to attain eternal life 20 and how to he perfect 23 telleth his disciples how hard it is for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 27 and promiseth reward to those that forsake any thing to follow him ANd it came to pass * Mar. 10.1 that when Jesus had finished these sayings he departed from Galilee and came into the coasts of Judea beyond Jordan 2 And great multitudes followed him and he healed them there 3 ¶ The Pharisees also came unto him tempting him and saying unto him Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause 4 And he answered and said unto them Have ye not read * Gen. 1.27 that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female 5 And said * Gen. 2.24 Eph. 5.31 For this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife and * 1 Cor. 6.16 they twain shall be one flesh 6 Wherefore they are no more twain but one flesh What therefore God hath joyned together let no man put asunder 7 They say unto him * Deut. 24.1 Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement and to put her away 8 He saith unto them Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives but from the beginning it was not so 9 * Ch. 5.32 Mar. 10.11 Luk. 16.18 1 Cor. 7.11 And I say unto you Whosoever shall put away his wife except it be for fornication and shall marry another committeth adultery and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery 10 ¶ His disciples say unto him If the case of the man be so with his wife it is not good to marry 11 But he said unto them All men cannot receive this saying save they to whom it is given 12 For there are some eunuchs which were so born from their mothers womb and there are some eunuchs which were made eunuchs of men and there be eunuchs which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heavens sake He that is able to receive it let him receive it 13 ¶ * Mar. 10.13 Luk. 18.15 Then were there brought unto him little children that he should put his hands on them and pray and the disciples rebuked them 14 But Jesus said Suffer little children and forbid them not to come unto me for of such is the kingdom of heaven 15 And he laid his hands on them and departed thence 16 ¶ * Mat. 10.17 Luk. 18.18 And behold one came and said unto him Good master what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life 17 And he said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God but if thou wilt enter into life keep the commandments 18 He saith unto him Which Jesus said * Exod. â—â— 13 Thou shalt do no murder Thou shalt not commit adultery Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness 19 Honour thy father and thy mother and Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself 20 The young man saith unto him All these things have I kept from my youth up what lack I yet 21 Jesus said unto him If thou wilt be perfect go and sell that thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come and follow me
I say unto you He shall not lose his reward 42 * Mat. 18.5 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that beleeve in me it is better for him that a milstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea 43 * Mat. 5.27 18.8 And if thy hand ‖ Or cause thee to offend offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter into life maimed then having two hands to go into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched 44 * Isa 66.24 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 45 And if thy foot offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter halt into life then having two feet to be cast into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched 46 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 47 And if thine eye ‖ Or cause tâ—â—e to offend offend thee pluck it out it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye then having two eyes to be cast into hell fire 48 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 49 For every one shall be salted with sire * Lev. 2.13 and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt 50 * Mat. 5.13 Salt is good but if the salt have lost his saltness wherewith will you leason it Have salt in your seâ—â—es have peace one with another CHAP. X. 2 Christ disputeth with the Pharisees touching divorcement 13 blesseth the children that are brought unto him 17 resolveth a rich man how he may inherit â—â—fe everlasting 23 telleth his disciples of the danger of riches 28 promiseth rewards to them that forsake any thing for the gospel 32 foretelleth his death and resurrection 35 biddeth the two ambitious suiters to think rather of suffering with him 45 and restoreth to Bartimeus his sight ANd * Mat. 19.1 he arose from thence and cometh into the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan and the people resort unto him again and as he was wont he taught them again 2 ¶ And the Pharisees came to him and asked him Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife tempting him 3 And he answered said unto them What did Moses command you 4 And they said Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement and to put her away 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife 8 And they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more twain but one flesh 9 What therefore God hath joyned together let no man put asunder 10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter 11 And he said unto them * Mat. 5.32 19.9 Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her 12 And if a woman shall put away her husband and be married to another she committeth adultery 13 ¶ * Mat. 19.13 And they brought young children to him that he should touch them and his disciples rebuked those that brought them 14 But when Jesus saw it he was much displeased and said unto them Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God 15 Verily I say unto you Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little childe he shall not enter therein 16 And he took them up in his arms put his hands upon them and blessed them 17 ¶ * Mat. 19.15 And when he was gone forth into the way there came one running and kneeled to him and asked him Good Master what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life 18 And Jesus said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God 19 Thou knowest the commandments Do not commit adultery Do not kill Do not steal Do not bear false witness Defraud not Honour thy father and mother 20 And he answered and said unto him Master all these have I observed from my youth 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him and said unto him One thing thou lackest go thy way sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come take up the cross and follow me 22 And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved for he had great possessions 23 ¶ And Jesus looked round about and saith unto his disciples How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words But Jesus answereth again and saith unto them Children how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 26 And they were astonished out of measure saying among themselves Who then can be saved 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith With men it is impossible but not with God for with God all things are possible 28 ¶ * Mat. 19.27 Then Peter began to say unto him Lo we have left all and have followed thee 29 And Jesus answered and said Verily I say unto you There is no man that hath left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my sake and the gospels 30 But he shall receive an hundred-sold now in this time houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the world to come eternal life 31 * Mat. 19.30 But many that are first shall be last and the last first 32 ¶ * Mat. 20.17 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem and Jesus went before them and they were amazed and as they followed they were afraid And he took again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen unto him 33 Saying Behold we go up to Jerusalem and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and unto the scribes and they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles 34 And they shall mock him and shall scourge him and shall spit upon him and shall kill him and the third day he shall rise again 35 ¶ * Mat. 20 2â— And James and John the sons of Zebedee come unto him saying Master we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire 36 And he said unto them What would ye that I should do for you 37 They said unto him Grant unto us that we may sit one on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand in thy glory 38 But Jesus said unto them Ye know not

II. 1 We ought to be obedient to Christ Jesus 5 and that because he vouchsafed to take our nature upon him 14 as it was necessary THerefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard lest at any time we should †Gr. run out as seeking vessels let them slip 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward 3 How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him 4 God also bearing them witness both with signs and wonders and with dâ—vers miracles and ‖ Or distribution gifts of the holy Ghost according to his own will 5 For unto the angles hath he not put in subjection the world to come whereof we speak 6 But one in a certain place testified saying * Psal 8.4 What is man that thou art mindful of him or the son of man that thou visitest him 7 Thou madest him ‖ Or a little while inferiour to a little lower then the angels thou crownedst him with glory honour didst set him over the works of thy hands 8 * 1 Cor. 15.27 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet For in that he put all in subjection under him he left nothing that is not put under him But now we see not yet all things put under him 9 But we see Jesus who was made a little lower then the angels ‖ Or by for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man 10 For it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things in bringing many sons unto glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren 12 Saying * Psal 22.22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee 13 And again * Psal 18.2 I will put my trust in him And again * Isa 8.18 Behold I and the children which God hath given me 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and bloud he also himself likewise took part of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their life-time subject to bondage 16 For verily †Gr. he taketh not hold of angels but of the seed of Abraham he taketh hold he took not on him the nature of angels but he took on him the seed of Abraham 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted he is able to succour them that are tempted CHAP. III. 1 Christ is more worthy then Moses 7 therefore if we beleeve not in him we shall be more worthy punishment then hard-hearted Israel WHerefore holy brethren partakers of the heavenly calling consider the Apostle and high Priest of our profession Christ Jesus 2 Who was faithful to him that †Gr. made 1 Sam. 12.6 appointed him as also * Num. 12.7 Moses was faithful in all his house 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory then Moses in as much as he who hath builded the house hath more honour then the house 4 For every house is builded by some man but he that built all things is God 5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after 6 But Christ as a Son over his own house whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence the rejoycing of the hope firm unto the end 7 Wherefore as the holy Ghost saith * Psal 95.7 Chap. 4.7 To day if ye will hear his voice 8 Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness 9 When your fathers tempted me proved me and saw my works fourty years 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation and said They do alway err in their heart and they have not known my ways 11 So I sware in my wrath †Gr. If they shall enter They shall not enter into my rest 12 Take heed brethren lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God 13 But exhort one another daily while it is called To day lest any of you be hardned through the deceitfulness of sin 14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence sted fast unto the end 15 While it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts as in the provocation 16 For some when they had heard did provoke howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses 17 But with whom was he grieved fourty years was it not with them that had sinned * Num. 14.29 c. whose carcases fell in the wilderness 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest but to them that beleeved not 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief CHAP. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but †Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2. And God did rest the seventh day from all his works 5 And in this place again If they shall enter into my rest 6
