can_v be_v endure_v by_o any_o man_n 2._o inasmuch_o as_o god_n presence_n be_v so_o glorious_a in_o itself_o &_o fearful_a to_o our_o nature_n all_o man_n be_v teach_v to_o prepare_v themselves_o never_o enter_v into_o earnest_a consideration_n of_o their_o own_o infirmity_n and_o do_v seldom_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n for_o if_o they_o do_v then_o doubtless_o the_o least_o sight_n of_o their_o least_o pollution_n will_v make_v they_o far_o from_o ever_o think_v of_o their_o own_o merit_n they_o also_o tell_v we_o of_o work_n of_o superrerogation_n but_o it_o seem_v here_o this_o holy_a prophet_n have_v none_o of_o they_o and_o they_o teach_v a_o man_n may_v in_o this_o life_n perfect_o fulfil_v the_o law_n but_o who_o can_v do_v it_o if_o not_o minister_n and_o what_o minister_n if_o not_o extraordinary_a prophet_n and_o yet_o isaiah_n the_o first_o and_o chief_a of_o they_o exclaim_v here_o in_o pitiful_a manner_n against_o his_o pollution_n doubtless_o if_o the_o papist_n will_v cease_v flatter_a â—orâ—mselues_n and_o not_o examine_v their_o conscience_n by_o their_o own_o please_a corruption_n but_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n they_o will_v be_v far_o from_o these_o conceit_n in_o the_o next_o place_n whereas_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n as_o of_o the_o peculiar_a sin_n of_o his_o place_n minister_n be_v here_o teach_v to_o avoid_v that_o sin_n above_o all_o other_o and_o to_o labour_v in_o that_o duty_n above_o any_o other_o for_o the_o do_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o comfort_n the_o want_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o vexation_n his_o tongue_n be_v the_o instrument_n give_v he_o to_o honour_n god_n if_o he_o use_v it_o well_o it_o yield_v he_o comfort_n more_o than_o any_o other_o duty_n but_o if_o he_o use_v not_o or_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n will_v be_v the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o all_o they_o therefore_o be_v great_o deceive_v who_o think_v a_o minister_n to_o discharge_v sufficient_o his_o duty_n though_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o keep_v good_a hospitality_n and_o make_v peace_n among_o his_o 〈◊〉_d and_o perform_v other_o work_n of_o charity_n and_o good_a life_n for_o if_o a_o minister_n have_v not_o this_o virtue_n he_o have_v none_o if_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o heâ—_n abuse_v his_o lip_n or_o if_o he_o open_v they_o not_o he_o have_v no_o conscience_n nor_o can_v have_v any_o comfort_n for_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a duty_n of_o a_o minister_n though_o all_o the_o other_o be_v require_v to_o make_v â—him_n complete_a the_o want_n of_o they_o may_v condemn_v he_o before_o man_n but_o it_o be_v the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n which_o present_o check_n he_o before_o god_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o holy_a prophet_n the_o conclusion_n than_o be_v to_o every_o minister_n that_o if_o he_o have_v all_o the_o virtue_n and_o good_a property_n that_o can_v commend_v a_o man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o if_o his_o lip_n be_v pollute_v either_o by_o not_o preach_v or_o by_o negligent_a idle_a or_o careless_a preach_n this_o pollution_n will_v so_o stain_v his_o conscience_n and_o so_o burden_n he_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o the_o time_n will_v come_v notwithstanding_o all_o his_o other_o good_a quality_n he_o will_v cry_v out_o in_o far_o more_o pitiful_a manner_n then_o here_o the_o prophet_n do_v woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v because_o i_o be_o a_o man_n of_o pollute_a lip_n it_o follow_v and_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n the_o prophet_n not_o only_a complaineâ—_n of_o his_o own_o pollution_n but_o of_o his_o people_n also_o among_o who_o he_o live_v and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o cause_n first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v not_o only_o his_o own_o sin_n but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o to_o complain_v of_o they_o to_o god_n for_o as_o he_o be_v the_o people_n interperter_n to_o god_n he_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o put_v up_o their_o petition_n to_o unfold_v their_o want_n and_o to_o crave_v relief_n for_o they_o at_o god_n hand_n but_o he_o must_v further_o take_v knowledge_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o make_v both_o public_a and_o private_a confession_n of_o they_o to_o god_n and_o the_o more_o particular_o he_o can_v do_v this_o the_o better_a and_o this_o he_o be_v to_o do_v both_o for_o the_o people_n good_a and_o for_o his_o own_o also_o because_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o peculiar_a danger_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n call_v that_o general_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n be_v they_o i_o mean_v that_o they_o be_v accessary_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n either_o by_o provoke_v they_o by_o their_o evil_a 〈◊〉_d or_o by_o not_o reprove_v or_o not_o hinder_v or_o suffer_v or_o wink_v or_o cover_v and_o conceal_v or_o not_o punish_v they_o or_o not_o careful_o enough_o use_v mean_n to_o prevent_v they_o by_o all_o which_o mean_n and_o many_o more_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o people_n sin_n be_v the_o minister_n by_o communication_n so_o that_o as_o well_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n as_o they_o he_o be_v to_o confess_v to_o god_n their_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o own_o now_o if_o a_o minister_n must_v confess_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v consequent_o that_o he_o must_v know_v they_o and_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o for_o else_o he_o can_v confess_v they_o and_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n why_o the_o holy_a ghost_n command_v a_o pastor_n to_o know_v his_o flock_n 27.23_o he_o must_v not_o only_o have_v a_o flock_n and_o know_v which_o be_v his_o flock_n or_o have_v a_o general_a eye_n over_o it_o but_o he_o must_v have_v a_o particular_a and_o distinct_a knowledge_n of_o the_o state_n of_o it_o and_o the_o more_o particular_a the_o better_o and_o if_o the_o minister_n ought_v to_o know_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v first_o that_o it_o be_v best_o for_o a_o minister_n to_o be_v present_a with_o his_o people_n that_o so_o he_o may_v better_o know_v they_o and_o their_o state_n and_o certain_o if_o it_o be_v a_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v to_o god_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o people_n then_o wilful_a and_o careless_a nonresidency_n and_o all_o absence_n without_o just_a and_o conscionable_a cause_n must_v needs_o be_v a_o foul_a and_o fearful_a sin_n for_o how_o can_v isayah_n have_v confess_v he_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n but_o that_o he_o dwell_v among_o they_o nay_o say_v the_o prophet_n he_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n among_o they_o indeed_o well_o may_v he_o know_v and_o confess_v his_o people_n pollution_n that_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n among_o they_o again_o if_o the_o minister_n be_v to_o confess_v his_o people_n sin_n and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o know_v they_o than_o it_o follow_v also_o that_o they_o must_v discover_v &_o confess_v they_o unto_o he_o or_o else_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a he_o shall_v perfect_o know_v their_o estate_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v a_o great_a fault_n in_o our_o church_n for_o however_o we_o condemn_v auricular_a confession_n as_o a_o very_a policy_n in_o the_o deviser_n and_o as_o a_o rack_n to_o the_o conscience_n of_o poor_a christian_n yet_o we_o not_o only_o allow_v but_o call_v and_o cry_v for_o that_o confession_n whereby_o a_o christian_a voluntary_o at_o all_o time_n may_v resort_v to_o his_o pastor_n and_o open_v his_o estate_n and_o disburden_v his_o conscience_n of_o people_n they_o be_v the_o worse_a do_v they_o make_v he_o though_o he_o be_v otherwise_o never_o so_o good_a for_o even_o the_o prophet_n though_o call_v of_o god_n himself_o and_o justify_v and_o of_o extraordinary_a grace_n yet_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n so_o stubborn_a and_o disobedient_a as_o the_o jew_n be_v he_o be_v something_o touch_v with_o their_o pollution_n minister_n even_o the_o best_a be_v man_n and_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n as_o they_o be_v man_n the_o nature_n of_o which_o corruption_n be_v to_o apprehend_v any_o evil_n where_o ever_o it_o can_v be_v find_v and_o to_o partake_v with_o it_o regeneration_n qualifi_v and_o abate_v this_o corruption_n but_o take_v it_o not_o away_o perfect_o in_o this_o life_n whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o a_o minister_n live_v among_o evil_a people_n can_v but_o be_v somewhat_o stain_v with_o their_o pollution_n of_o what_o sort_n soever_o they_o be_v insomuch_o as_o it_o be_v often_o see_v that_o one_o know_v to_o be_v otherwise_o dispose_v of_o himself_o be_v find_v to_o be_v dispose_v to_o this_o or_o that_o evil_a by_o live_v among_o a_o people_n so_o dispose_v and_o again_o that_o a_o minister_n in_o such_o a_o place_n &_o among_o such_o people_n free_a from_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n remove_v to_o another_o place_n be_v there_o find_v more_o or_o less_o taint_v with_o they_o because_o they_o abound_v among_o the_o people_n and_o yet_o further_o that_o a_o minister_n know_v to_o be_v faithful_a painful_a and_o zealous_a and_o come_v to_o a_o disobedient_a stubborn_a froward_a or_o profane_a and_o dissolute_a people_n his_o faith_n be_v weaken_v his_o zeal_n and_o courage_n abate_v god_n grace_n in_o he_o dull_v &_o much_o decay_a godly_a minister_n do_v daily_o complain_v hereof_o and_o experience_n every_o where_o show_v it_o too_o true_a out_o of_o this_o we_o may_v learn_v something_o both_o for_o our_o instruction_n and_o for_o our_o conversation_n for_o our_o instruction_n it_o here_o appear_v how_o wicked_a and_o wretched_a the_o corruption_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v which_o can_v but_o receive_v some_o contagion_n from_o the_o pollution_n of_o those_o with_o who_o we_o live_v for_o this_o be_v so_o not_o only_o in_o they_o who_o carry_v a_o loose_a hand_n over_o themselves_o but_o even_o in_o such_o as_o look_v most_o narrow_o unto_o their_o step_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o holy_a prophet_n who_o be_v a_o man_n of_o more_o than_o ordinary_a sanctification_n how_o little_a cause_n therefore_o have_v any_o man_n to_o extol_v nature_n and_o how_o much_o less_o cause_n the_o schoolman_n and_o some_o other_o papist_n to_o give_v the_o least_o commendation_n to_o our_o pure_a natural_n for_o if_o nature_n rectify_v by_o grace_n be_v so_o hardly_o keep_v within_o compass_n alas_o how_o outrageous_a and_o perverse_a be_v it_o when_o it_o reign_v without_o controlment_n and_o for_o our_o further_a instruction_n here_o we_o may_v see_v of_o what_o a_o creep_a and_o encroach_a nature_n sin_n be_v which_o like_o a_o secret_a venom_n in_o the_o natural_a public_a person_n as_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n it_o descend_v visible_o and_o the_o example_n of_o their_o evil_a life_n be_v palpable_o scandalous_a so_o from_o the_o people_n to_o the_o people_n but_o as_o a_o gangreve_v if_o it_o begin_v in_o the_o foot_n will_v without_o speedy_a prevention_n spread_v privy_o to_o the_o hart_n so_o sin_n show_v itself_o even_o from_o the_o people_n to_o the_o minister_n so_o great_a cause_n be_v there_o for_o all_o man_n to_o stop_v sin_n in_o the_o beginning_n to_o break_v it_o in_o the_o egg_n to_o give_v water_n no_o passage_n no_o not_o a_o little_a for_o let_v this_o gangreve_v begin_v at_o the_o foot_n it_o will_v not_o rest_v till_o it_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n for_o our_o confirmation_n we_o be_v here_o teach_v first_o if_o a_o minister_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o the_o creep_a nature_n of_o sin_n be_v in_o such_o danger_n to_o be_v stain_v with_o the_o people_n pollution_n then_o let_v all_o minister_n desire_v and_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n to_o dwell_v with_o a_o people_n as_o little_o pollute_v as_o may_v be_v otherwise_o let_v he_o assure_v himself_o to_o be_v pollute_v with_o they_o which_o be_v both_o a_o great_a discomfort_n to_o his_o own_o conscience_n as_o here_o it_o be_v to_o the_o prophet_n and_o disgrace_n to_o his_o profession_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n of_o every_o good_a professor_n of_o religion_n to_o keep_v himself_o unspotted_a of_o the_o world_n 1.17_o then_o how_o much_o more_o be_v it_o the_o minister_n duty_n so_o to_o do_v and_o how_o foul_a a_o stain_n be_v it_o to_o the_o honour_n of_o his_o call_n to_o be_v pollute_v in_o the_o common_a pollution_n of_o his_o people_n it_o may_v be_v therefore_o good_a counsel_n to_o all_o godly_a minister_n in_o the_o place_n and_o dispose_n of_o themselves_o not_o to_o inquire_v only_o how_o good_a a_o live_n such_o and_o such_o a_o place_n be_v how_o well_o seat_v how_o healthful_a and_o beneficial_a it_o will_v be_v which_o be_v alas_o the_o common_a and_o almost_o the_o only_a question_n now_o adays_o but_o principal_o to_o regard_v what_o a_o people_n they_o be_v and_o how_o affect_v among_o who_o they_o be_v to_o live_v if_o godly_a and_o well_o dispose_v or_o at_o least_o tractable_a and_o gentle_a and_o willing_a to_o be_v teach_v then_o less_o to_o regard_v other_o incommodity_n but_o if_o wicked_a &_o profane_a or_o which_o be_v worse_o stubborn_a froward_a &_o untractable_a then_o less_o to_o regard_v the_o great_a commodity_n and_o certain_o if_o this_o point_n be_v well_o consider_v of_o and_o how_o bitter_a it_o have_v be_v in_o the_o end_n to_o many_o who_o have_v not_o regard_v it_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o this_o be_v the_o best_a encouragement_n or_o discouragement_n the_o great_a commodity_n or_o discommodity_n and_o the_o best_a reason_n either_o to_o win_v a_o man_n to_o a_o place_n or_o to_o draw_v he_o from_o it_o how_o good_a soever_o it_o be_v otherways_o they_o that_o neglect_v this_o duty_n and_o be_v lead_v or_o mislead_v rather_o with_o carnal_a and_o worldly_a respect_n how_o just_a be_v it_o upon_o they_o when_o they_o be_v make_v to_o cry_v in_o the_o sorrow_n of_o their_o soul_n woe_n be_v i_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n and_o here_o such_o minister_n as_o have_v poor_a live_n but_o good_a people_n let_v they_o not_o faint_v nor_o be_v discourage_v they_o have_v more_o cause_n to_o bless_v god_n then_o to_o be_v grieve_v for_o doubtless_o they_o be_v far_o better_o than_o those_o who_o have_v great_a live_n and_o a_o evil_a people_n but_o as_o for_o those_o to_o who_o god_n have_v be_v so_o good_a as_o to_o bestow_v upon_o they_o competent_a live_n and_o a_o willing_a and_o well_o dispose_v people_n let_v they_o think_v themselves_o double_o bless_v of_o god_n and_o treble_v bind_v to_o honour_n god_n and_o to_o do_v good_a in_o his_o church_n and_o if_o such_o man_n go_v not_o before_o their_o brethren_n in_o all_o ministerial_a care_n and_o duty_n their_o fault_n be_v above_o all_o man_n and_o they_o make_v themselves_o unworthy_a of_o so_o great_a mercy_n again_o if_o that_o a_o pollute_a people_n pollute_v their_o minister_n here_o be_v a_o good_a warning_n for_o all_o minister_n to_o be_v wary_a and_o choice_n of_o their_o company_n with_o who_o they_o will_v most_o private_o converse_v for_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n they_o may_v not_o retire_v themselves_o into_o solitariness_n nor_o sequester_v themselves_o from_o all_o society_n with_o their_o people_n which_o be_v rather_o a_o cimical_a and_o fantastical_a than_o any_o way_n a_o religious_a practice_n so_o of_o all_o man_n be_v they_o to_o be_v most_o careful_a that_o they_o do_v not_o loose_o and_o lavish_o bestow_v themselves_o on_o all_o company_n as_o too_o many_o do_v in_o our_o church_n to_o the_o great_a scandell_n thereof_o who_o care_v not_o with_o who_o they_o converse_v but_o all_o company_n all_o place_n
all_o time_n all_o sport_n and_o recreation_n all_o meeting_n all_o occasion_n be_v one_o with_o they_o but_o alas_o what_o marvel_v though_o such_o man_n keep_v not_o themselves_o unspotted_a of_o the_o world_n but_o prove_v too_o offensive_a to_o their_o call_n for_o see_v the_o best_a man_n can_v live_v with_o the_o best_a people_n but_o they_o shall_v receive_v some_o contagion_n from_o they_o how_o careful_o ought_v ordinary_a minister_n to_o make_v difference_n of_o man_n and_o meeting_n time_n and_o place_n and_o not_o diffuse_o and_o careless_o to_o thrust_v themselves_o into_o all_o so_o do_v shall_v they_o keep_v their_o call_n from_o much_o reproach_n and_o preserve_v themselves_o from_o much_o pollution_n which_o otherwise_o from_o their_o pollute_a people_n they_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o receive_v and_o here_o people_n be_v to_o be_v admonish_v not_o too_o sharp_o to_o censure_v their_o minister_n though_o he_o be_v not_o so_o sociable_a with_o they_o all_o as_o it_o may_v be_v many_o will_v expect_v for_o it_o concern_v no_o man_n to_o be_v so_o wary_a of_o his_o company_n and_o his_o sport_n as_o it_o do_v the_o minister_n and_o if_o they_o will_v have_v comfort_n and_o honour_n by_o their_o minister_n let_v they_o be_v â—areful_a into_o what_o recreation_n and_o company_n they_o draw_v or_o desire_v he_o for_o the_o more_o pollute_v the_o people_n be_v among_o who_o he_o live_v the_o more_o careful_a must_v he_o be_v to_o keep_v himself_o clear_a from_o their_o pollution_n last_o here_o people_n be_v teach_v not_o to_o be_v too_o sharp_a condemner_n of_o those_o minister_n who_o conversation_n be_v not_o so_o unblameable_a as_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v for_o if_o they_o live_v ill_a general_o the_o cause_n be_v because_o they_o live_v among_o a_o ill_a people_n why_o then_o shall_v they_o so_o much_o condemn_v they_o for_o such_o fault_n as_o wherein_o themselves_o have_v make_v they_o faulty_a i_o say_v not_o but_o our_o church_n and_o state_n and_o ministry_n be_v to_o censure_v such_o man_n and_o it_o be_v good_a they_o do_v it_o more_o but_o it_o be_v against_o all_o reason_n the_o people_n shall_v do_v so_o whereas_o themselves_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o for_n alas_o if_o this_o holy_a prophet_n be_v a_o man_n of_o pollute_a lip_n because_o heâ—_n dwell_v with_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n what_o marvel_v then_o though_o ordinary_a minister_n be_v pollute_v with_o the_o common_a and_o universal_a pollution_n of_o their_o people_n people_n therefore_o be_v first_o of_o all_o to_o see_v that_o themselves_o be_v well_o order_v and_o godly_a and_o then_o just_o may_v they_o complain_v if_o the_o life_n of_o their_o minister_n be_v not_o agreeable_a but_o otherwise_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a without_o very_o special_a grace_n of_o god_n but_o that_o a_o minister_n shall_v be_v more_o or_o less_o touch_v with_o to_o those_o crime_n which_o be_v the_o common_a fault_n of_o his_o people_n and_o lamentable_a experience_n daily_o let_v we_o see_v that_o where_o a_o people_n in_o a_o town_n be_v give_v to_o drunkenness_n there_o the_o minister_n be_v either_o so_o for_o company_n or_o at_o least_o too_o good_a a_o fellow_n where_o a_o people_n be_v give_v to_o contention_n there_o the_o minister_n have_v too_o many_o suit_n where_o the_o people_n be_v popish_a there_o the_o minister_n be_v too_o superstitious_a where_o the_o people_n be_v ignorant_a there_o y_z e_z minister_n be_v no_o great_a clerk_n where_o the_o people_n be_v give_v to_o any_o great_a sin_n there_o the_o minister_n general_o be_v not_o clear_a from_o the_o same_o pollution_n and_o it_o be_v see_v that_o the_o best_a minister_n and_o most_o careful_a of_o all_o do_v complain_v bitter_o of_o the_o pollution_n of_o their_o people_n for_o that_o howsoever_o it_o may_v be_v they_o escape_v partake_v with_o their_o sin_n yet_o they_o always_o find_v at_o the_o least_o a_o dull_n and_o decay_v of_o god_n grace_n in_o themselves_o where_o the_o people_n be_v untoward_a and_o disobedient_a if_o therefore_o a_o minister_n live_v with_o such_o a_o people_n his_o case_n be_v pitiful_a and_o dangerous_a for_o he_o walk_v in_o y_z e_z midst_n of_o net_n &_o snare_n which_o be_v lay_v for_o he_o on_o every_o side_n and_o if_o he_o escape_v they_o i_o mean_v if_o he_o keep_v himself_o unspotted_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o spot_a and_o pollute_a people_n his_o care_n and_o his_o conscience_n be_v worthy_a both_o admiration_n and_o imitation_n and_o himself_o be_v worthy_a double_a honour_n as_o be_v both_o a_o zealous_a minister_n and_o a_o holy_a man_n but_o he_o who_o god_n have_v bless_v with_o a_o good_a and_o tractable_a people_n and_o well_o affect_v to_o the_o word_n and_o yet_o himself_o live_v loose_o and_o scandalous_o among_o they_o a_o heavy_a burden_n and_o a_o hard_a account_n lie_v on_o that_o minister_n and_o no_o rebuke_n be_v too_o rough_a no_o punishment_n too_o great_a no_o censure_n too_o sharp_a for_o he_o and_o if_o this_o holy_a prophet_n fear_v so_o much_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o his_o small_a pollution_n and_o yet_o live_v among_o so_o wicked_a and_o pollute_v a_o people_n than_o what_o heaviness_n and_o horror_n shall_v be_v heap_v on_o his_o soul_n who_o care_v not_o with_o how_o foul_a pollution_n his_o life_n be_v stain_v and_o yet_o live_v among_o a_o godly_a and_o well_o dispose_v people_n and_o thus_o we_o have_v the_o first_o cause_n of_o his_o fear_n his_o own_o and_o his_o people_n pollution_n it_o follow_v and_o my_o eye_n have_v see_v the_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o hostes._n the_o second_o cause_n of_o the_o prophet_n fear_n and_o astonishment_n be_v he_o see_v the_o lord_n who_o then_o appear_v in_o glory_n unto_o he_o not_o that_o he_o see_v the_o substance_n of_o god_n for_o that_o iâ—_n invisible_a and_o incomprehensible_a bâ—t_v hiâ—_n glory_n nor_o the_o fullness_n of_o 〈◊〉_d glory_n for_o that_o can_v be_v endure_v but_o a_o glimpse_n of_o it_o nor_o that_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o his_o body_n in_o ordinary_a manner_n but_o in_o a_o vision_n wherein_o how_o far_o the_o eye_n of_o his_o body_n be_v use_v neither_o the_o prophet_n expressâ—â—_n nor_o we_o can_v well_o conceive_v the_o mâ—â—ning_n than_o be_v â—n_o a_o vision_n he_o see_v such_o glory_n and_o maiesâ—â—â—_n as_o he_o know_v there_o be_v a_o extraordinary_a presence_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n who_o be_v the_o king_n of_o glory_n at_o who_o sight_n and_o think_v of_o his_o presence_n instant_o his_o conscience_n iâ—_n smite_v with_o fear_n for_o his_o own_o infirmity_n and_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o people_n wherein_o let_v we_o first_o of_o all_o observe_v the_o connexion_n and_o dependence_n of_o these_o two_o cause_n one_o upon_o another_o for_o as_o they_o be_v both_o joint_o the_o cause_n of_o his_o fear_n so_o one_o of_o they_o be_v in_o a_o sort_n the_o cause_n of_o another_o he_o fear_v because_o of_o his_o own_o and_o his_o people_n sin_n and_o because_o he_o see_v the_o lord_n but_o why_o be_v he_o afraid_a to_o see_v the_o lord_n the_o cause_n thereof_o be_v his_o own_o and_o their_o sin_n without_o which_o he_o will_v never_o have_v be_v afraid_a but_o rather_o have_v glorify_v to_o see_v the_o lord_n but_o his_o conscience_n check_v he_o for_o some_o defect_n of_o duty_n in_o his_o call_n therefore_o he_o tremble_v at_o the_o least_o glimpse_n of_o god_n glory_n here_o let_v we_o mark_v the_o ground_n of_o his_o reason_n which_o be_v this_o that_o man_n that_o be_v in_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o able_a to_o stand_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n this_o be_v a_o general_a and_o certain_a truth_n &_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v first_o the_o contrariety_n betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o only_a thing_n which_o offend_v he_o &_o which_o provoke_v his_o wrath_n and_o just_a displeasure_n therefore_o as_o a_o subject_n can_v but_o be_v much_o amaze_v if_o he_o hap_v to_o come_v into_o the_o king_n presence_n with_o any_o thing_n about_o he_o which_o the_o king_n hate_v or_o can_v abide_v to_o see_v so_o a_o man_n can_v but_o be_v extreme_a astonish_v if_o he_o know_v himself_o to_o be_v in_o god_n presence_n with_o his_o sin_n which_o god_n soul_n hate_v second_o sin_n make_v a_o man_n indebt_v to_o god_n for_o as_o the_o law_n tie_v he_o first_o to_o obedience_n so_o if_o he_o sin_n and_o fail_v in_o that_o it_o bind_v he_o to_o punishment_n and_o the_o more_o a_o man_n sin_v the_o deper_n be_v he_o in_o god_n debt_n if_o then_o in_o this_o world_n a_o man_n willing_o endure_v not_o the_o sight_n of_o he_o in_o who_o debt_n he_o be_v what_o marvel_n though_o a_o poor_a sinner_n tremble_v at_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n
glorious_a word_n of_o god_n behind_o their_o back_n which_o they_o preach_v to_o other_o with_o â—heir_a mouth_n these_o man_n may_v wonder_v at_o this_o holy_a prophet_n niceness_n or_o else_o all_o the_o world_n may_v wonder_v at_o their_o profaneness_n a_o little_a pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n fear_v he_o to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n but_o these_o dare_v do_v it_o with_o eye_n ear_n lip_n foot_n hand_n heart_n and_o all_o pollute_a their_o eye_n pollute_v with_o careless_a look_v at_o all_o vanity_n their_o ear_n with_o hear_v and_o their_o lip_n with_o speak_v wanton_a &_o wicked_a talk_n their_o foot_n with_o run_v into_o wicked_a company_n their_o hand_n with_o practise_v and_o their_o heart_n with_o devise_v and_o consent_v to_o all_o wickedness_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o the_o labour_n of_o such_o man_n be_v almost_o unprofitable_a because_o they_o dare_v come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o sin_n in_o many_o place_n of_o our_o land_n there_o be_v by_o god_n blessing_n much_o teach_n yet_o there_o be_v little_a reformation_n in_o the_o life_n of_o the_o most_o but_o contrariwise_o some_o fall_n to_o atheism_n some_o to_o papisme_n some_o into_o foul_a sin_n not_o to_o be_v name_v among_o christian_n where_o be_v the_o cause_n sure_o not_o in_o the_o gospel_n nor_o in_o our_o doctrine_n nor_o in_o the_o teach_n of_o it_o but_o one_o very_o principal_a cause_n be_v many_o minister_n come_v into_o god_n presence_n unsanctified_a &_o in_o their_o sin_n not_o care_v how_o loose_o they_o live_v in_o the_o face_n of_o their_o people_n and_o therefore_o god_n in_o justice_n though_o he_o instanst_o smite_v not_o they_o with_o visible_a vengeance_n for_o their_o presumption_n yet_o he_o smite_v the_o people_n with_o spiritual_a blindness_n that_o they_o regard_v not_o their_o doctrine_n but_o look_v at_o their_o life_n and_o do_v rather_o follow_v the_o profaneness_n of_o the_o one_o than_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o other_o minister_n be_v such_o in_o who_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v therefore_o because_o they_o do_v not_o so_o but_o dishonour_v he_o by_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n in_o their_o sin_n therefore_o he_o can_v abide_v they_o nor_o give_v any_o blessing_n to_o their_o labour_n all_o minister_n therefore_o as_o they_o will_v see_v any_o fruit_n of_o their_o ministry_n let_v they_o first_o sanctify_v themselves_o &_o cleanse_v their_o heart_n by_o repentance_n afore_o they_o presume_v to_o stand_v up_o to_o rebuke_v sin_n in_o other_o else_o let_v they_o not_o think_v that_o their_o golden_a word_n shall_v do_v so_o much_o good_a as_o their_o leaden_a life_n shall_v do_v hurt_v and_o they_o may_v happen_v to_o confirm_v man_n that_o already_o be_v convert_v but_o hardly_o shall_v any_o such_o man_n convert_v any_o soul_n from_o popery_n or_o profaneness_n and_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a conceit_n for_o man_n to_o imagine_v there_o be_v any_o force_n in_o eloquence_n or_o humane_a learning_n to_o overthrow_v that_o sin_n in_o other_o which_o rule_v and_o reign_v in_o themselves_o our_o church_n and_o all_o reform_a church_n may_v make_v use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n for_o it_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o a_o church_n to_o have_v their_o doctrine_n powerful_a &_o effectual_a for_o the_o win_n of_o soul_n therefore_o it_o concern_v they_o to_o take_v order_n as_o well_o that_o their_o minister_n be_v godly_a man_n as_o good_a scholar_n &_o their_o life_n inoffensive_a as_o well_o as_o their_o doctrine_n sound_n or_o else_o they_o will_v find_v in_o woeful_a experience_n that_o they_o pull_v down_o as_o much_o with_o the_o one_o hand_n as_o they_o build_v up_o with_o the_o other_o but_o most_o near_o this_o doctrine_n touch_v minister_n themselves_o who_o must_v know_v their_o case_n be_v most_o fearful_a of_o all_o man_n if_o they_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o profaneness_n for_o as_o no_o man_n be_v more_o honourable_a than_o a_o learned_a and_o holy_a minister_n so_o none_o more_o contemptible_a in_o this_o world_n none_o more_o miserable_a for_o that_o to_o come_v than_o he_o that_o by_o his_o loose_a &_o lewd_a life_n do_v scandalize_v his_o doctrine_n and_o let_v he_o assure_v himself_o that_o for_o his_o presumption_n in_o rush_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o his_o sin_n he_o shall_v in_o this_o world_n be_v cast_v out_o as_o unsavoury_a salt_n and_o tread_v down_o of_o man_n 5.13_o with_o the_o foot_n of_o contempt_n and_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v he_o shall_v above_o all_o man_n cry_v out_o in_o most_o extreme_a torment_n of_o conscience_n woe_n be_v i_o that_o my_o eye_n must_v see_v the_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o host_n and_o so_o because_o he_o will_v not_o in_o this_o world_n come_v into_o god_n so_o far_o from_o be_v drive_v from_o their_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v sinful_a man_n dare_v not_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n without_o much_o fear_n as_o let_v they_o contrariwise_o be_v assure_v that_o the_o more_o they_o tremble_v at_o god_n presence_n here_o the_o less_o shall_v they_o fear_v it_o at_o the_o last_o day_n and_o when_o profane_a and_o ungodly_a man_n who_o in_o this_o world_n fear_v not_o to_o stand_v in_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o horrible_a sin_n shall_v cry_v to_o the_o mountain_n fall_v upon_o we_o and_o hill_n cover_v we_o and_o hide_v we_o from_o pardon_n of_o those_o sin_n by_o christ_n jesus_n this_o be_v the_o way_n that_o god_n use_v and_o devise_v this_o be_v the_o sure_a way_n that_o can_v fail_v some_o think_v that_o all_o trouble_n of_o mind_n be_v nothing_o but_o melancholy_a and_o therefore_o think_v nothing_o needs_o but_o physic_n and_o outward_a comfort_n but_o he_o that_o consider_v in_o what_o case_n the_o prophet_n here_o be_v or_o david_n when_o he_o make_v the_o 6._o the_o 32._o or_o the_o 51._o psalm_n psalm_n will_v be_v of_o another_o mind_n and_o will_v find_v that_o nothing_o can_v proper_o trouble_v the_o mind_n but_o sin_n therefore_o as_o the_o wise_a physician_n in_o his_o cure_n first_o search_v out_o the_o cause_n and_o then_o endeavour_n to_o to_o take_v it_o away_o so_o the_o good_a be_v in_o many_o christian_a church_n so_o many_o minister_n as_o they_o can_v all_o be_v maintain_v but_o some_o go_v up_o and_o down_o undisposed_a and_o unprovided_a for_o i_o answer_v this_o be_v too_o true_a in_o all_o age_n there_o be_v wander_v levits_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n which_o go_v up_o and_o down_o and_o offer_v their_o service_n and_o serve_v for_o 10._o shekel_n of_o silver_n and_o a_o suit_n of_o apparel_n and_o meat_n and_o drink_v 17.8.6_o but_o this_o calamity_n be_v upon_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n never_o but_o then_o when_o there_o be_v no_o king_n a_o good_a minister_n but_o to_o go_v further_o whence_o come_v this_o coal_n take_a from_o the_o altar_n this_o coal_n of_o fire_n be_v take_v by_o the_o angel_n from_o the_o altar_n of_o god_n dissension_n ambitious_a humour_n turbulent_a &_o proud_a humour_n new_a opinion_n private_a quarrel_n all_o these_o nor_o none_o of_o these_o be_v for_o the_o pulpit_n these_o may_v make_v a_o man_n fiery_a tongue_v but_o this_o fire_n be_v never_o take_v from_o god_n altar_n as_o the_o prophet_n be_v this_o fiery_a tongue_n never_o come_v from_o heaven_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v it_o follow_v
