second_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n by_o a_o denunciation_n assure_v he_o that_o it_o be_v deadly_a and_o this_o aggravate_v high_o the_o greatness_n of_o this_o disease_n upon_o this_o denunciation_n we_o take_v up_o a_o general_a lesson_n concern_v the_o promise_n and_o threaten_n of_o god_n to_o wit_n that_o in_o all_o his_o promise_n and_o threaten_n there_o be_v a_o condition_n annex_v which_o either_o be_v express_v or_o perpetual_o to_o be_v understand_v so_o it_o be_v here_o for_o suppose_v the_o prophet_n use_v the_o simple_a form_n of_o denunciation_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o despair_n but_o that_o he_o may_v the_o more_o earnest_o seek_v grace_n and_o mercy_n at_o god_n last_o we_o mark_v his_o behaviour_n under_o this_o disease_n and_o we_o find_v that_o suppose_v the_o plague_n threaten_v he_o on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o god_n terrify_v he_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n yet_o in_o this_o extremity_n he_o make_v his_o recourse_n to_o he_o that_o terrify_v he_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o have_v retire_v to_o he_o when_o the_o king_n of_o asshur_n terrify_v he_o but_o this_o be_v a_o wonderful_a triumph_n of_o faith_n that_o the_o lord_n appear_v to_o be_v his_o enemy_n yet_o he_o make_v his_o recourse_n unto_o he_o this_o he_o can_v not_o have_v do_v except_o he_o have_v be_v sustain_v by_o the_o testimony_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o he_o can_v have_v retire_v to_o god_n that_o be_v a_o consume_a fire_n in_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n except_o he_o have_v be_v uphold_v by_o the_o testimony_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n have_v this_o testimony_n he_o know_v that_o this_o threaten_n be_v to_o amend_v he_o and_o not_o to_o slay_v he_o in_o word_n and_o not_o indeed_o upon_o this_o we_o gather_v this_o observation_n blessed_n be_v the_o man_n that_o be_v not_o condemn_v in_o his_o own_o conscience_n for_o if_o we_o can_v escape_v the_o condemnation_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n how_o much_o less_o can_v we_o be_v able_a to_o escape_v the_o condemnation_n of_o god_n who_o make_v the_o heart_n for_o the_o lord_n condemn_v no_o man_n but_o he_o who_o his_o conscience_n first_o condemn_v so_o the_o lord_n have_v place_v this_o conscience_n here_o to_o resemble_v the_o judgement_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v after_o for_o who_o the_o conscience_n condemn_v assure_o the_o lord_n condemn_v and_o who_o the_o conscience_n with_o the_o warrant_n of_o the_o word_n approve_v no_o
city_n &_o country_n be_v defile_v with_o these_o vice_n procure_v so_o far_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v a_o evil_a end_n to_o their_o own_o soul_n it_o be_v a_o terrible_a thing_n to_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o so_o many_o as_o let_v they_o loose_v to_o these_o vicâ—s_n must_v fall_v into_o his_o hand_n for_o it_o can_v be_v but_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n from_o heaven_n must_v be_v pour_v upon_o such_o ungodliness_n and_o there_o be_v none_o who_o have_v pour_v forth_o his_o love_n and_o take_v himself_o to_o these_o vice_n but_o sure_o except_o he_o be_v wonderful_o prevent_v he_o shall_v perish_v in_o his_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v not_o one_o of_o the_o least_o judgement_n of_o god_n for_o john_n 8._o it_o be_v count_v one_o of_o the_o most_o terrible_a judgement_n when_o the_o lord_n threaten_v the_o pharisy_n that_o they_o shall_v perish_v in_o their_o sin_n if_o the_o word_n which_o be_v now_o sound_v may_v have_v be_v able_a to_o have_v call_v man_n back_o sure_o it_o have_v be_v clear_o and_o continual_o sound_v but_o when_o i_o look_v to_o the_o effect_n it_o appear_v well_o that_o this_o word_n have_v be_v sound_v to_o the_o harden_v of_o the_o great_a part_n and_o to_o seal_v up_o their_o judgement_n against_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n wrath_n which_o day_n they_o have_v blot_v out_o of_o their_o mind_n and_o put_v out_o of_o their_o knowledge_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o see_v it_o the_o lord_n nourish_v this_o light_n by_o his_o spirit_n in_o we_o whereby_o we_o may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o heaven_n and_o that_o there_o be_v a_o hell_n that_o see_v the_o danger_n we_o may_v press_v to_o eschew_v it_o and_o see_v the_o felicity_n we_o may_v haste_v we_o to_o embrace_v it_o will_v god_n it_o be_v so_o thus_o far_o for_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o similitude_n he_o go_v forward_a and_o he_o say_v he_o have_v cut_v he_o off_o from_o his_o beam_n or_o from_o the_o throomb_n that_o go_v about_o the_o beam_n as_o you_o call_v they_o as_o if_o he_o will_v say_v after_o this_o manner_n as_o the_o weaver_n do_v cut_v off_o the_o web_n from_o the_o throomb_n of_o his_o beam_n so_o the_o lord_n have_v take_v resolute_a purpose_n to_o cut_v off_o my_o life_n from_o his_o beam_n in_o this_o change_n of_o the_o person_n he_o let_v we_o see_v a_o great_a discretion_n and_o knowledge_n in_o himself_o he_o ascribe_v the_o cut_n off_o to_o god_n but_o he_o take_v the_o cause_n to_o himself_o he_o ascribe_v the_o chastisement_n to_o god_n but_o he_o take_v the_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o chastisement_n to_o himself_o and_o he_o acknowledge_v god_n to_o have_v his_o beginning_n in_o this_o work_n and_o himself_o to_o have_v his_o hand_n in_o it_o also_o he_o acknowledge_v god_n to_o be_v a_o doer_n as_o in_o all_o work_v god_n have_v his_o work_n and_o there_o be_v no_o work_n so_o abominable_a as_o it_o flow_v from_o the_o instrument_n but_o as_o it_o flow_v from_o god_n it_o be_v both_o holy_a and_o just_a so_o this_o wise_a king_n take_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o chastisement_n from_o god_n to_o himself_o happy_a be_v he_o that_o in_o time_n condemn_v and_o judge_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v eschew_v the_o condemnation_n of_o god_n thus_o far_o concern_v the_o first_o part_n of_o our_o division_n now_o in_o the_o end_n of_o this_o verse_n and_o of_o the_o verse_n follow_v the_o king_n set_v down_o the_o great_a fury_n and_o rage_n of_o his_o sickness_n it_o be_v a_o pestilent_a fever_n and_o so_o the_o rage_a fury_n behoove_v to_o be_v exceed_o great_a he_o utter_v the_o vehemency_n of_o his_o disease_n in_o the_o word_n follow_v and_o he_o speak_v as_o if_o he_o will_v say_v after_o this_o manner_n if_o god_n hold_v on_o as_o he_o begin_v by_o the_o same_o sickness_n ere_o night_n he_o will_v make_v a_o end_n of_o i_o and_o in_o the_o verse_n follow_v he_o say_v i_o propound_v to_o myself_o and_o i_o look_v for_o it_o that_o like_o a_o devour_a lion_n he_o shall_v bruise_v my_o bone_n he_o shall_v bruise_v they_o short_o yea_o ere_o night_n for_o i_o take_v all_o this_o to_o be_v speak_v on_o one_o day_n soul_n the_o word_n indeed_o the_o terrible_a disease_n of_o the_o body_n except_v utter_v more_o for_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o so_o good_a a_o king_n can_v have_v speak_v so_o of_o god_n except_o he_o have_v feel_v some_o other_o thing_n then_o any_o distress_n in_o his_o body_n so_o in_o utter_v of_o these_o voice_n he_o let_v we_o see_v that_o he_o have_v the_o pain_n of_o soul_n and_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n join_v with_o the_o disease_n of_o his_o body_n and_o that_o he_o feel_v god_n to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o consume_a fire_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o he_o can_v have_v utter_v such_o voice_n of_o god_n as_o to_o call_v he_o a_o devour_a lion_n except_o he_o feel_v another_o kind_n of_o fever_n than_o any_o natural_a fever_n you_o see_v david_n when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o like_a extremity_n of_o body_n and_o soul_n he_o cry_v psalm_n 6._o that_o his_o bone_n be_v vex_v and_o do_v quake_v for_o fear_n of_o all_o the_o disease_n that_o can_v come_v upon_o any_o person_n no_o question_n the_o disease_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o conscience_n be_v the_o great_a and_o of_o all_o the_o disease_n and_o trouble_n that_o overtake_v the_o conscience_n no_o question_n this_o be_v the_o great_a when_o with_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v enough_o and_o more_o then_o enough_o for_o any_o to_o sustain_v when_o with_o this_o sight_n there_o be_v a_o feel_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n join_v o_o than_o this_o sickness_n be_v insupportable_a when_o with_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n be_v join_v a_o touch_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n merciful_a god_n if_o the_o horror_n be_v not_o exceed_v great_a and_o terrible_a so_o tâ—at_v it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a matter_n that_o the_o soul_n can_v stand_v upon_o any_o assurance_n of_o faith_n but_o it_o shall_v incontinent_o run_v to_o desperation_n yet_o it_o be_v true_a that_o there_o be_v never_o a_o one_o of_o the_o chief_a servant_n of_o god_n but_o he_o have_v have_v experience_n of_o this_o either_o less_o or_o more_o and_o he_o have_v be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o that_o hell_n which_o the_o reprobate_n shall_v have_v in_o a_o full_a measure_n the_o end_n why_o the_o lord_n suffer_v his_o dear_a child_n to_o be_v in_o such_o extremity_n soul_n be_v these_o to_o let_v they_o see_v express_o what_o christ_n have_v suffer_v while_o as_o he_o suffer_v the_o full_a weight_n of_o his_o father_n wrath_n inflame_v against_o their_o sin_n and_o not_o only_o against_o their_o sin_n but_o also_o against_o the_o sin_n of_o all_o the_o elect_a he_o cast_v they_o i_o say_v into_o this_o extremity_n to_o let_v they_o see_v what_o christ_n have_v suffer_v for_o they_o how_o far_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o christ_n and_o how_o precious_a that_o redemption_n purchase_v by_o his_o blood_n shall_v be_v unto_o us._n for_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o any_o man_n can_v make_v much_o of_o that_o benefit_n which_o they_o know_v not_o to_o be_v a_o benefit_n so_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o you_o to_o make_v much_o of_o heaven_n except_o you_o have_v have_v some_o taste_n of_o hell_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o send_v his_o servant_n to_o heaven_n even_o by_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n to_o let_v they_o see_v that_o there_o be_v no_o connivance_n between_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n for_o it_o may_v have_v be_v think_v as_o many_o of_o the_o wicked_a think_v that_o there_o have_v be_v a_o connivance_n between_o god_n the_o father_n and_o his_o son_n christ_n and_o therefore_o i_o say_v he_o let_v they_o taste_v of_o these_o distraction_n and_o pang_n of_o hell_n that_o they_o may_v say_v i_o see_v he_o have_v feel_v hell_n in_o another_o sort_n that_o have_v redeem_v we_o from_o hell_n and_o where_o that_o i_o can_v sustain_v this_o which_o be_v temper_v in_o a_o small_a measure_n it_o have_v be_v a_o great_a burden_n indeed_o which_o our_o saviour_n have_v sustain_v whilst_o he_o sustain_v hell_n for_o our_o sin_n and_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o whole_a elect_a o_o then_o this_o exercise_n be_v to_o let_v they_o see_v how_o far_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o god_n application_n the_o dissolute_a life_n of_o the_o profane_a multitude_n let_v we_o see_v clear_o that_o there_o be_v never_o a_o one_o of_o they_o that_o have_v know_v the_o meaning_n of_o this_o article_n and_o this_o be_v a_o seal_a letter_n to_o many_o of_o you_o all_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o
mercy_n of_o god_n he_o shall_v find_v it_o terrible_a to_o fall_v into_o his_o hand_n it_o be_v terrible_a to_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o consume_a fire_n sport_n with_o flesh_n as_o they_o please_v but_o jest_v not_o with_o god_n he_o shall_v find_v in_o experience_n if_o he_o run_v out_o this_o course_n that_o he_o shall_v curse_v the_o day_n of_o his_o birth_n &_o disclaim_v the_o and_o by_o all_o kind_n of_o humble_a gesture_n he_o obtain_v mercy_n so_o that_o the_o lord_n do_v cast_v his_o whole_a sin_n behind_o his_o back_n the_o cause_n that_o move_v the_o lord_n to_o show_v mercy_n he_o note_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o that_o verse_n there_o be_v no_o occasion_n in_o the_o king_n for_o he_o deserve_v the_o contrary_a it_o be_v only_o the_o love_n of_o the_o lord_n acknowledge_v three_o thing_n which_o be_v worthy_a of_o mark_v first_o the_o king_n acknowledge_v godly_a that_o sin_n be_v the_o only_a cause_n of_o our_o misery_n whether_o it_o be_v in_o our_o conscience_n body_n or_o soul_n sure_o this_o king_n speak_v very_o true_a for_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o god_n can_v hate_v in_o we_o but_o sin_n there_o be_v nothing_o that_o he_o can_v correct_v in_o we_o but_o sin_n there_o be_v nothing_o that_o his_o furious_a jealousy_n can_v burn_v up_o but_o sin_n there_o be_v nothing_o that_o he_o can_v purge_v in_o we_o but_o sin_n take_v away_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v cease_v yea_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o a_o wicked_a one_o and_o the_o purgation_n of_o the_o godly_a shall_v not_o need_v so_o both_o punishment_n and_o purgation_n shall_v cease_v sin_n be_v take_v way_n for_o sin_n be_v the_o only_a thing_n that_o be_v punish_v in_o they_o and_o purge_v in_o us._n now_o this_o king_n acknowledge_v this_o run_v unto_o god_n confess_v his_o sin_n &_o find_v mercy_n lesson_n so_o note_v the_o lesson_n whether_o the_o lord_n visit_v we_o with_o trouble_n of_o body_n or_o he_o acknowledge_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o he_o acknowledge_v be_v this_o he_o acknowledge_v the_o remission_n of_o his_o sin_n disease_n the_o best_a and_o sure_a cure_n that_o can_v be_v apply_v to_o any_o disease_n for_o there_o can_v be_v a_o better_a cure_n nor_o a_o sure_a cure_n then_o to_o remove_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o disease_n therefore_o the_o remove_n of_o sin_n cure_v the_o disease_n the_o unhappy_a world_n when_o they_o be_v visit_v with_o any_o disease_n they_o run_v only_o to_o the_o body_n and_o seek_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o disease_n only_o in_o the_o body_n as_o though_o the_o body_n have_v the_o only_a wit_n they_o run_v never_o to_o the_o soul_n when_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n the_o body_n be_v but_o a_o instrument_n to_o the_o soul_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v well_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o we_o can_v be_v disease_v therefore_o see_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o disease_n lurk_v in_o the_o soul_n when_o the_o lord_n visit_v you_o with_o any_o disease_n run_v to_o the_o soul_n acknowledge_v that_o sin_n be_v the_o cause_n lay_v the_o fault_n where_o it_o be_v and_o crave_v mercy_n of_o god_n for_o this_o be_v the_o ready_a way_n to_o cure_v our_o disease_n will_v god_n this_o lesson_n be_v learn_v for_o if_o it_o be_v well_o observe_v we_o shall_v not_o see_v so_o many_o kind_n of_o pestilent_a disease_n rage_v in_o this_o country_n as_o at_o this_o day_n we_o do_v the_o three_o thing_n the_o king_n acknowledge_v be_v that_o it_o be_v not_o his_o own_o integrity_n that_o procure_v his_o deliverance_n he_o acknowledge_v that_o it_o be_v not_o his_o innocency_n in_o life_n nor_o his_o good_a deed_n as_o may_v appear_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o chapter_n for_o in_o his_o prayer_n he_o appear_v to_o have_v make_v a_o ostentation_n of_o his_o good_a deed_n and_o innocency_n of_o life_n but_o here_o in_o the_o end_n of_o this_o verse_n he_o resolve_v this_o doubt_n he_o let_v we_o see_v it_o be_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n that_o be_v the_o only_a cause_n of_o his_o deliverance_n thus_o far_o for_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n now_o let_v we_o mark_v the_o form_n of_o speech_n the_o form_n be_v this_o because_o say_v he_o he_o have_v cast_v all_o my_o sin_n behind_o his_o back_n this_o form_n of_o speech_n be_v borrow_v from_o our_o custom_n for_o those_o thing_n that_o man_n may_v not_o behold_v that_o be_v filthy_a and_o abominable_a we_o cast_v they_o behind_o our_o back_n that_o we_o may_v not_o see_v they_o forget_v now_o sin_n be_v the_o only_a thing_n which_o be_v abominable_a in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n when_o he_o forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n he_o be_v say_v to_o cast_v they_o behind_o his_o back_n the_o only_a thing_n that_o hide_v the_o countenance_n of_o god_n from_o we_o be_v sin_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o can_v separate_v man_n from_o his_o creator_n but_o sin_n only_o and_o what_o lose_v we_o when_o we_o be_v separate_v from_o the_o countenance_n of_o god_n we_o lose_v true_a pleasure_n and_o perfect_a pleasure_n there_o can_v neither_o be_v true_a nor_o perfect_a pleasure_n but_o in_o the_o sight_n and_o countenance_n of_o god_n and_o while_o we_o be_v by_o sin_n debar_v from_o his_o countenance_n we_o be_v deprive_v both_o of_o true_a and_o perfect_a pleasure_n then_o the_o diligent_a care_n of_o a_o christian_a shall_v stand_v in_o this_o that_o sin_n debar_v he_o not_o from_o the_o countenance_n of_o god_n but_o we_o shall_v be_v diligent_a in_o beg_v mercy_n for_o christ_n his_o cause_n that_o enjoy_v his_o countenance_n we_o may_v have_v satiety_n of_o pleasure_n to_o last_v for_o ever_o the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o mark_v in_o these_o word_n be_v this_o where_o he_o say_v he_o have_v cast_v all_o we_o the_o child_n of_o wrath_n dead_a in_o sin_n and_o in_o â—he_n uncircumcision_n of_o our_o flesh_n under_o the_o second_o sort_n i_o comprehend_v all_o motion_n cogitation_n and_o action_n of_o our_o whole_a life_n whereby_o we_o decline_v never_o so_o little_a and_o go_v aside_o from_o that_o perfect_a duty_n which_o we_o owe_v to_o god_n and_o to_o our_o neighbour_n so_o in_o a_o word_n i_o comprehend_v under_o this_o second_o sort_n all_o our_o actual_a sin_n this_o natural_a corruption_n which_o we_o call_v original_a sin_n by_o the_o which_o it_o
servant_n nor_o the_o murderer_n because_o he_o be_v your_o kinsman_n nor_o the_o oppressor_n because_o he_o be_v your_o dependent_a therefore_o in_o time_n lay_v they_o aside_o and_o let_v the_o which_o they_o spew_v out_o as_o the_o dog_n do_v so_o this_o dolour_n and_o torment_n turn_v not_o the_o heart_n it_o alter_v not_o the_o soul_n but_o move_v the_o soul_n for_o the_o present_a &_o call_v his_o child_n to_o repentance_n and_o to_o work_v with_o they_o inward_o he_o forgive_v they_o not_o a_o part_n of_o their_o sin_n but_o from_o the_o time_n he_o enter_v to_o this_o work_n at_o a_o instant_n he_o forgive_v they_o all_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o whole_a life_n past_a present_a and_o to_o come_v as_o the_o parable_n mat._n 18.23_o testify_v where_o you_o see_v the_o lord_n creditor_n therefore_o god_n only_o have_v power_n to_o forgive_v for_o it_o be_v the_o law_n of_o god_n that_o be_v transgress_v for_o all_o sin_n be_v the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n &_o therefore_o all_o sin_n offend_v he_o mediate_o or_o immediate_o and_o see_v he_o proper_o be_v offend_v he_o only_o must_v forgive_v as_o to_o christ_n jesus_n man_n he_o hang_v on_o the_o cross_n be_v brethren_n we_o be_v say_v to_o forgive_v other_o &_o we_o forgive_v other_o indeed_o but_o our_o remission_n relieve_v not_o the_o man_n of_o his_o guiltiness_n but_o the_o guiltiness_n remain_v ever_o in_o the_o soul_n until_o god_n remove_v it_o and_o in_o respect_n the_o guiltiness_n remain_v until_o it_o be_v remove_v by_o god_n &_o none_o have_v power_n to_o wash_v away_o the_o guiltiness_n but_o god_n therefore_o it_o be_v god_n proper_o that_o be_v the_o forgiver_n of_o sin_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n
