have_v certain_a instinct_n plant_v in_o they_o by_o their_o first_o creation_n which_o though_o they_o be_v not_o proper_o law_n but_o inclination_n to_o man_n as_o he_o come_v out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o maker_n with_o the_o impression_n of_o his_o image_n upon_o he_o have_v some_o conformity_n to_o the_o supreme_a justice_n without_o any_o reference_n to_o any_o command_n which_o be_v not_o clean_o lose_v but_o even_o in_o man_n without_o education_n do_v strange_o manifest_v itself_o in_o divers_a particular_n 2_o in_o respect_n of_o obligation_n for_o there_o can_v be_v be_v ordain_v and_o will_v move_v if_o it_o know_v it_o and_o how_o to_o attain_v it_o again_o though_o the_o understanding_n do_v sometime_o find_v that_o these_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n will_v make_v i_o happy_a but_o i_o spy_v the_o true_a and_o everlasting_a happiness_n yet_o the_o conviction_n be_v not_o so_o strong_a and_o evident_a that_o it_o dare_v conclude_v the_o pursuit_n thereof_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o those_o delight_n which_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o and_o from_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o competition_n of_o these_o present_a enjoyment_n will_v soon_o starve_v and_o famish_v these_o uncompleat_a conviction_n and_o all_o pursuit_n in_o the_o will_n of_o they_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n happen_v in_o the_o understanding_n 2._o in_o the_o will_n which_o have_v lose_v her_o liberty_n to_o follow_v her_o light_n and_o be_v captivate_v by_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n the_o understanding_n be_v right_o enlighten_v present_v to_o the_o will_v several_a end_n the_o subordinate_a end_n preservation_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la by_o meat_n and_o drink_n acquisition_n of_o wealth_n to_o provide_v these_o convenience_n obtain_v of_o power_n to_o secure_v that_o wealth_n the_o supreme_a end_n blessedness_n and_o that_o wherein_o it_o consist_v show_v the_o will_n that_o the_o value_n of_o these_o end_n must_v be_v the_o measure_n of_o her_o pursuit_n of_o they_o viz._n with_o subordination_n to_o the_o supreme_a end_n in_o order_n to_o it_o and_o bid_v she_o beware_v of_o turn_v the_o subordinate_a end_n to_o ultimate_a end_n but_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n either_o before_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o understanding_n have_v precipitate_v the_o will_n into_o a_o violent_a pursuit_n of_o those_o present_a and_o sensible_a good_n or_o so_o bewitch_v she_o after_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n thereof_o that_o it_o can_v no_o more_o listen_v to_o the_o entertainment_n of_o the_o pursuit_n of_o a_o future_a spiritual_a good_a than_o if_o it_o have_v no_o reason_n the_o beast_n in_o man_n have_v get_v the_o man_n upon_o his_o back_n and_o run_v away_o with_o he_o contrary_a to_o the_o cry_n and_o dictate_v even_o of_o reason_n that_o shall_v rule_v it_o and_o of_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n all_o mankind_n be_v sick_a both_o in_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o cure_v we_o must_v be_v before_o we_o can_v clear_o and_o uniform_o move_v to_o our_o supreme_a end_n which_o what_o it_o be_v as_o the_o next_o inquiry_n chap._n iu._n of_o the_o supreme_a end_n of_o man._n what_o be_v that_o good_a for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a inquiry_n of_o the_o wise_a of_o man_n so_o it_o be_v that_o problem_n that_o have_v torture_v the_o wit_n and_o weary_v the_o pursuit_n of_o most_o of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n that_o have_v be_v in_o the_o world._n the_o universality_n of_o the_o question_n grow_v from_o that_o restless_a motion_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n after_o some_o end_n which_o put_v every_o man_n at_o last_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o somewhat_o as_o his_o end_n though_o it_o may_v be_v not_o upon_o the_o speculative_a and_o critical_a inquiry_n concern_v it_o as_o the_o ordinary_a rational_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n teach_v a_o man_n to_o conclude_v rational_o though_o he_o have_v not_o that_o artificial_a reason_n of_o reason_n which_o be_v acquire_v by_o speculation_n and_o study_n and_o as_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o put_v many_o upon_o the_o inquiry_n and_o all_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o some_o end_n so_o the_o difficulty_n of_o the_o decision_n do_v produce_v that_o variety_n of_o judgement_n and_o practice_n concern_v this_o which_o be_v impossible_a all_o to_o be_v sound_a and_o true_a but_o possible_o they_o may_v be_v all_o false_a in_o as_o much_o as_o there_o can_v be_v but_o one_o supreme_a good_a and_o adequate_a end_n of_o man_n which_o be_v his_o happiness_n and_o from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o among_o the_o several_a determination_n of_o man_n concern_v this_o matter_n each_o do_v abundant_o convince_v the_o other_o to_o be_v error_n and_o mistake_n and_o though_o none_o do_v sufficient_o satisfy_v and_o convince_v a_o man_n that_o it_o be_v the_o right_n yet_o do_v abundant_o satisfy_v that_o the_o adverse_a opinion_n be_v mistake_v concern_v this_o point_n because_o the_o truth_n be_v but_o one_o the_o rest_n be_v all_o error_n and_o though_o some_o carry_v more_o likelihood_n of_o reason_n than_o other_o yet_o it_o carry_v so_o much_o distance_n from_o truth_n that_o it_o be_v discernible_a not_o to_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o the_o mistake_n be_v not_o only_o evident_a to_o reason_n but_o even_o to_o sense_n itself_o that_o man_n that_o will_v go_v about_o to_o persuade_v i_o that_o happiness_n consist_v in_o corporal_a pleasure_n outward_a good_a of_o body_n or_o fortune_n wealth_n or_o honour_n knowledge_n of_o all_o create_a being_n practice_n of_o moral_a virtue_n etc._n etc._n i_o need_v no_o other_o conviction_n of_o the_o falsity_n of_o these_o but_o this_o that_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o any_o or_o all_o of_o these_o i_o still_o find_v those_o affection_n in_o my_o soul_n that_o can_v consist_v with_o happiness_n but_o mingle_v misery_n with_o this_o thin_a and_o empty_a and_o narrowness_n of_o it_o 2._o consequent_o grief_n for_o what_o i_o want_v and_o have_v not_o 3._o fear_v of_o loss_n of_o what_o i_o have_v and_o never_o any_o man_n in_o this_o world_n in_o all_o the_o enjoyment_n he_o ever_o have_v or_o be_v capable_a of_o except_o that_o which_o we_o now_o intend_v to_o speak_v of_o but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o have_v these_o three_o affection_n about_o he_o actual_o work_v which_o can_v never_o consist_v with_o happiness_n now_o the_o general_a ground_n of_o these_o mistake_n in_o the_o practice_n of_o man_n be_v 1._o the_o error_n of_o ignorance_n 1._o of_o the_o subject_a man_n for_o let_v it_o be_v but_o once_o grant_v that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v a_o intellectual_a immortal_a substance_n all_o those_o opinion_n which_o place_n happiness_n in_o this_o life_n will_v be_v convince_v clear_o false_a and_o vain_a but_o though_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o tell_v i_o what_o be_v not_o my_o

of_o any_o object_n join_v itself_o with_o it_o in_o the_o understanding_n other_o proposition_n be_v more_o complex_fw-la or_o remote_a as_o that_o god_n be_v good_a etc._n etc._n for_o the_o first_o meet_v in_o the_o same_o subject_n or_o else_o such_o as_o either_o the_o thing_n affirm_v or_o the_o thing_n whereof_o the_o affirmation_n be_v or_o both_o be_v thing_n that_o do_v not_o immediate_o fall_v within_o our_o sense_n as_o the_o man_n be_v a_o substance_n or_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o substance_n these_o though_o original_o derive_v from_o sense_n yet_o they_o be_v refine_v by_o the_o help_n of_o discourse_n 3._o conclusion_n draw_v either_o from_o these_o simple_a or_o complex_fw-la apprehension_n which_o flow_v into_o our_o understanding_n immediate_o by_o our_o sense_n and_o this_o be_v rational_a discourse_n a_o faculty_n or_o power_n put_v into_o man_n whereby_o he_o be_v beyond_o all_o other_o visible_a creature_n and_o whereby_o all_o his_o action_n whether_o civil_a lapse_v condition_n beside_o other_o providential_a help_v a_o stock_n of_o visibles_n and_o a_o rational_a faculty_n to_o improve_v that_o stock_n to_o some_o measure_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o and_o produce_v no_o alteration_n in_o he_o neither_o do_v it_o dilate_v his_o essential_a goodness_n or_o add_v a_o new_a degree_n of_o fruition_n of_o good_a to_o what_o he_o before_o have_v for_o he_o love_v the_o production_n of_o his_o will_n in_o himself_o and_o for_o himself_o 2._o that_o the_o first_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n so_o it_o be_v the_o supreme_a end_n of_o all_o thing_n because_o he_o be_v the_o supreme_a good_a and_o the_o only_a adequate_a object_n of_o himself_o so_o that_o in_o the_o production_n of_o any_o effect_n the_o effect_n that_o be_v produce_v or_o any_o thing_n without_o the_o first_o be_v can_v not_o be_v the_o ultimate_a end_n for_o which_o it_o shall_v be_v produce_v for_o his_o will_n be_v and_o be_v fill_v with_o a_o infinite_a good_a viz._n himself_o so_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a he_o shall_v take_v any_o thing_n into_o that_o will_n which_o be_v not_o in_o order_n to_o himself_o he_o different_a degree_n of_o thing_n the_o impression_n be_v more_o or_o less_o genuine_a for_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v denominate_v good_a but_o by_o a_o conformity_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o first_o goodness_n that_o conformity_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o impression_n of_o divine_a goodness_n upon_o the_o creature_n this_o impression_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n upon_o the_o creature_n be_v not_o by_o any_o transmission_n of_o any_o part_n of_o the_o essential_a goodness_n of_o the_o first_o be_v into_o the_o effect_n for_o that_o be_v incommunicable_a nor_o by_o any_o physical_a action_n of_o that_o goodness_n upon_o another_o thing_n but_o the_o mere_a will_n of_o the_o first_o mover_n now_o or_o necessity_n of_o the_o subject_n desire_v to_o the_o thing_n desire_v as_o a_o man_n to_o supply_v his_o hunger_n desire_v not_o clothes_n but_o meat_n and_o when_o cold_a desire_v not_o meat_n but_o clothes_n because_o these_o hold_v proportion_n to_o that_o exigence_n that_o the_o creature_n desire_v to_o fill_v and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o temporal_a good_a satisfy_v not_o a_o spiritual_a substance_n nor_o a_o spiritual_a good_a satisfy_v a_o carnal_a substance_n because_o they_o be_v not_o proportionable_a 4._o a_o activity_n in_o the_o good_a desire_a to_o apply_v itself_o to_o the_o supply_n of_o that_o

be_v one_o thing_n and_o our_o will_v another_o but_o that_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o simplicity_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o as_o his_o essence_n so_o his_o will_n be_v immutable_a he_o will_v nothing_o now_o but_o what_o he_o ever_o will_v and_o understand_v from_o eternity_n what_o he_o now_o know_v for_o eternity_n have_v neither_o now_o nor_o then_o in_o needs_o be_v the_o first_o designer_n of_o his_o own_o end_n which_o be_v but_o the_o result_n of_o his_o work_n a_o second_o cause_n though_o he_o may_v have_v a_o end_n in_o his_o causation_n proportionable_a to_o the_o causality_n wherewith_o he_o be_v endue_v yet_o as_o his_o efficiency_n be_v subordinate_a to_o and_o derive_v from_o the_o efficiency_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n so_o satisfaction_n of_o those_o lust_n as_o his_o end_n and_o that_o end_n draw_v out_o his_o activity_n and_o strength_n to_o
compass_v they_o yet_o a_o wise_a statesman_n according_a to_o the_o convenience_n or_o exigence_n of_o the_o public_a can_v manage_v and_o order_v this_o ambition_n and_o the_o satisfaction_n he_o and_o a_o imperfection_n which_o may_v be_v supply_v by_o the_o acquisition_n of_o that_o end_n for_o which_o he_o work_v both_o these_o be_v necessary_o to_o be_v admit_v in_o any_o case_n where_o any_o end_n extrinsical_a to_o the_o efficient_a itself_o be_v admit_v for_o 1._o the_o end_n have_v a_o impulsion_n or_o action_n upon_o the_o efficient_a and_o 2._o it_o necessary_o suppose_v a_o vacuity_n or_o emptiness_n quoad_fw-la hoc_fw-la which_o shall_v be_v supply_v with_o that_o end_v acquire_v be_v it_o a_o end_n of_o supplement_n or_o delight_n neither_o of_o these_o be_v possible_o to_o be_v admit_v in_o the_o first_o who_o be_v a_o infinite_a good_a commensurate_n to_o the_o infinite_a measure_n of_o his_o own_o will._n the_o final_a cause_n then_o of_o all_o thing_n be_v he_o will_v because_o he_o will_v his_o glory_n be_v a_o consequence_n of_o his_o work_n in_o the_o work_n not_o the_o ultimate_a end_n of_o his_o work_n because_o nothing_o that_o he_o make_v can_v contribute_v aught_o to_o his_o glory_n or_o happiness_n 2._o in_o respect_n of_o the_o thing_n produce_v the_o ordination_n of_o every_o particular_a thing_n to_o its_o particular_a end_n either_o in_o order_n to_o itself_o or_o to_o some_o thing_n else_o or_o both_o the_o intermediate_n end_v of_o all_o thing_n be_v different_a according_a to_o their_o several_a nature_n and_o the_o several_a dispensation_n of_o the_o divine_a will._n that_o this_o may_v be_v so_o be_v evident_a upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o that_o infiniteness_n of_o wisdom_n power_n and_o presence_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n which_o before_o be_v consider_v and_o that_o it_o must_v be_v so_o be_v likewise_o evident_a upon_o the_o consideration_n before_o express_v viz._n that_o the_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o being_n and_o operation_n in_o the_o world_n nothing_o can_v be_v unless_o he_o will_v it_o to_o be_v and_o this_o will_n must_v needs_o be_v extend_v to_o every_o individual_a thing_n and_o motion_n in_o the_o world_n for_o as_o well_o as_o any_o may_v evade_v the_o determination_n of_o his_o will_n all_o thing_n may_v there_o be_v three_o degree_n of_o thing_n natural_a contingent_a and_o voluntary_a now_o the_o mean_n of_o carry_v thing_n mere_o natural_a to_o their_o several_a end_n ordinary_o be_v that_o rule_n and_o order_n which_o he_o have_v set_v in_o thing_n natural_a and_o those_o propension_n and_o inclination_n which_o be_v plant_v in_o thing_n to_o the_o observance_n of_o that_o law._n now_o this_o have_v a_o threefold_a a_o deformity_n uselessness_n and_o uncomeliness_n in_o the_o creature_n the_o same_o it_o be_v with_o man_n he_o receive_v questionless_a a_o rule_n to_o live_v and_o move_v to_o a_o most_o suitable_a end_n and_o conformable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n that_o order_v he_o to_o that_o end_n as_o long_o as_o he_o move_v conformable_a to_o that_o rule_n he_o move_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o maker_n to_o a_o most_o suitable_a end_n but_o when_o once_o he_o violate_v that_o rule_n he_o contract_v a_o deformity_n ataxy_n and_o uncomeliness_n by_o such_o violation_n 3._o a_o obligation_n to_o some_o positive_a punishment_n annex_v to_o the_o violation_n of_o that_o law_n for_o let_v we_o suppose_v any_o creature_n want_v will_n and_o understanding_n that_o do_v notwithstanding_o not_o move_v according_a to_o this_o rule_n by_o this_o he_o will_v most_o clear_o contract_v the_o two_o former_a viz._n loss_n and_o deformity_n but_o where_o a_o law_n be_v give_v to_o a_o creature_n endue_v with_o these_o faculty_n the_o violation_n of_o the_o law_n so_o give_v include_v in_o it_o not_o only_o a_o privative_a offence_n as_o i_o
