commodity_n to_o get_v and_o treasure_n up_o virtue_n only_o and_o why_o do_v we_o after_o their_o example_n despise_v all_o these_o thing_n and_o spend_v that_o which_o we_o account_v most_o precious_a i_o mean_v time_n that_o we_o may_v be_v adorn_v and_o clothe_v with_o virtue_n if_o it_o can_v make_v we_o hit_v that_o mark_n which_o every_o one_o so_o much_o desire_v and_o seek_v after_o with_o such_o great_a pain_n and_o labour_n namely_o that_o they_o may_v enjoy_v some_o chief_a good_a in_o this_o world_n and_o lead_v thereby_o a_o content_a and_o happy_a life_n be_v not_o overtake_v friendly_a reader_n with_o this_o small_a difficulty_n which_o perhaps_o may_v cause_v a_o gross_a and_o feeble_a head_n not_o well_o instruct_v in_o wisdom_n to_o stagger_v and_o depart_v out_o of_o the_o right_a way_n now_o although_o the_o heavenly_a word_n only_o have_v the_o perfect_a and_o sound_a knowledge_n of_o wisdom_n because_o he_o be_v that_o eternal_a wisdom_n itself_o yet_o man_n be_v his_o workmanship_n &_o aid_v with_o his_o grace_n must_v not_o leave_v of_o to_o seek_v for_o &_o to_o require_v earnest_o of_o he_o that_o gift_n of_o the_o knowledge_n &_o participation_n of_o the_o secret_n of_o that_o incomprehensible_a truth_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o he_o may_v and_o shall_v be_v necessary_a for_o he_o that_o his_o soul_n thereby_o may_v obtain_v her_o permanent_a and_o last_a happiness_n moreover_o albeit_o our_o sovereign_a &_o chief_a good_a our_o perfect_a contentation_n and_o absolute_a felicity_n be_v only_o in_o heaven_n in_o the_o enjoy_n of_o that_o divine_a light_n yet_o we_o must_v not_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n albeit_o we_o can_v full_o possess_v that_o leave_v of_o to_o seek_v without_o cease_v or_o give_v over_o in_o any_o sort_n to_o keep_v and_o follow_v that_o good_a and_o infallible_a way_n of_o virtue_n which_o cause_v we_o to_o pass_v over_o quiet_o and_o to_o sustain_v with_o joy_n of_o spirit_n the_o misery_n of_o mankind_n and_o appease_v the_o perturbation_n of_o our_o soul_n from_o whence_o proceed_v all_o the_o evil_n that_o torment_v we_o and_o make_v they_o void_a of_o all_o damnable_a effect_n will_v teach_v we_o to_o lead_v a_o pleasant_a peaceable_a &_o quiet_a life_n &_o to_o effect_v all_o thing_n worthy_a &_o beseem_v this_o certain_a hope_n that_o we_o shall_v one_o day_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v frame_v a_o new_a in_o that_o eternal_a most_o happy_a &_o content_a life_n let_v we_o therefore_o account_v this_o world_n and_o all_o the_o riches_n thereof_o as_o a_o thing_n belong_v to_o a_o other_o as_o a_o stranger_n and_o nothing_o appertain_v to_o those_o man_n who_o be_v regenerate_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n have_v profit_v well_o in_o the_o school_n of_o wisdom_n let_v we_o not_o seek_v for_o friendship_n upon_o earth_n let_v we_o not_o covete_n after_o riches_n glory_n honour_n and_o pleasure_n which_o none_o but_o fool_n do_v extol_v desire_v and_o wonder_n at_o we_o be_v not_o of_o this_o world_n but_o stranger_n only_o therein_o and_o therefore_o let_v we_o set_v all_o worldly_a thing_n behind_o we_o and_o account_v they_o unworthy_a the_o care_n of_o our_o immortal_a soul_n if_o we_o mean_v not_o to_o perish_v with_o the_o world_n by_o join_v ourselves_o there-unto_a let_v we_o forsake_v it_o i_o say_v forsake_v it_o bold_o how_o precious_a soever_o it_o be_v that_o we_o may_v abundant_o treasure_n up_o that_o great_a virtue_n sweet_a and_o durable_a wealth_n i_o mean_v virtue_n which_o be_v honour_v love_a and_o desire_v for_o itself_o only_o which_o be_v the_o true_a and_o wholesome_a medicine_n for_o disease_a soul_n the_o rest_n of_o the_o mind_n oppress_v with_o care_n the_o cause_n by_o the_o will_n of_o god_n of_o that_o chief_a good_a wherein_o the_o principal_a end_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v and_o the_o only_o assure_a guide_n which_o lead_v to_o the_o haven_n so_o much_o desire_v of_o every_o one_o namely_o the_o contentation_n of_o mind_n which_o thing_n this_o present_a academy_n do_v not_o only_o set_v before_o our_o eye_n but_o also_o do_v save_v and_o keep_v we_o be_v already_o enter_v into_o this_o haven_n of_o safety_n against_o all_o tempest_n if_o we_o will_v ourselves_o and_o not_o spare_v our_o labour_n to_o reap_v profit_n of_o those_o learned_a and_o wise_a instruction_n that_o be_v here_o give_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o precept_n of_o doctrine_n and_o example_n of_o the_o life_n of_o ancient_a virtuous_a and_o famous_a man_n for_o first_o of_o all_o we_o shall_v learn_v hereby_o to_o know_v ourselves_o and_o the_o end_n of_o our_o be_v second_o we_o shall_v be_v instruct_v in_o good_a manner_n and_o teach_v how_o we_o may_v live_v well_o and_o happy_o in_o every_o estate_n and_o condition_n of_o life_n whatsoever_o yea_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o the_o base_a and_o low_a estate_n which_o of_o the_o ignorant_a and_o common_a sort_n of_o people_n be_v oftentimes_o call_v miserable_a as_o much_o joy_n and_o happiness_n as_o a_o monarch_n can_v be_v partaker_n of_o in_o the_o fruition_n of_o his_o greatness_n yea_o much_o more_o than_o he_o if_o he_o be_v wicked_a because_o vice_n in_o all_o estate_n make_v the_o possessor_n thereof_o wretched_a and_o contrariwise_o virtue_n make_v every_o condition_n of_o life_n happy_a moreover_o we_o shall_v see_v in_o this_o academy_n that_o every_o one_o love_a and_o fear_v god_n may_v obtain_v this_o inestimable_a good_a of_o virtue_n and_o thereby_o remain_v a_o conqueror_n over_o the_o perturbation_n of_o his_o soul_n which_o breed_v all_o his_o misery_n remember_v this_o point_n always_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o the_o frail_a nature_n of_o man_n aid_v by_o the_o author_n of_o all_o goodness_n can_v attain_v to_o this_o perfection_n we_o shall_v learn_v here_o how_o we_o ought_v to_o govern_v ourselves_o wise_o and_o dutiful_o in_o all_o humane_a action_n and_o affair_n and_o in_o all_o charge_n and_o place_n whatsoever_o either_o public_a or_o private_a whereunto_o we_o shall_v be_v call_v we_o may_v note_v here_o cause_n of_o the_o subversion_n and_o ruin_n of_o many_o empire_n estate_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o of_o the_o glitter_a show_n and_o glory_n of_o infinite_a other_o as_o also_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o wretchedness_n and_o destruction_n of_o a_o great_a number_n of_o man_n and_o what_o have_v lift_v up_o other_o and_o crown_v they_o with_o honour_n and_o immortal_a praise_n we_o shall_v be_v teach_v here_o the_o government_n of_o a_o house_n and_o family_n the_o manner_n of_o the_o education_n and_o instruction_n of_o child_n the_o mutual_a duty_n of_o marry_a couple_n of_o brethren_n of_o master_n and_o servant_n how_o to_o command_v and_o how_o to_o obey_v we_o shall_v see_v here_o the_o order_n and_o establishment_n of_o policy_n and_o superiority_n what_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o head_n of_o they_o of_o prince_n and_o governor_n of_o nation_n as_o also_o what_o the_o duty_n of_o their_o subject_n be_v brief_o both_o great_a and_o small_a may_v draw_v out_o from_o hence_o the_o doctrine_n and_o knowledge_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v most_o necessary_a for_o the_o government_n of_o a_o house_n and_o of_o a_o commonwealth_n with_o sufficient_a instruction_n how_o to_o frame_v their_o life_n and_o manner_n in_o the_o mould_n and_o pattern_n of_o true_a and_o holy_a virtue_n and_o how_o by_o mean_n thereof_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n work_v in_o they_o they_o may_v run_v the_o race_n of_o their_o day_n in_o joy_n happiness_n rest_n and_o tranquillity_n of_o spirit_n and_o that_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o great_a adversity_n which_o the_o uncertainty_n and_o continual_a change_n of_o humane_a thing_n may_v bring_v upon_o they_o now_o because_o the_o sequel_n compound_v of_o the_o sundry_a treatise_n and_o discourse_n of_o this_o academy_n will_v sufficient_o instruct_v thou_o in_o all_o thing_n above_o mention_v as_o it_o promise_v in_o the_o forefront_n and_o title_n thereof_o i_o will_v not_o dilate_v this_o matter_n any_o far_a but_o only_o desire_v of_o thou_o reader_n patient_o to_o hear_v these_o academical_a student_n from_o the_o first_o of_o their_o discourse_n unto_o the_o last_o their_o intent_n be_v only_o as_o thou_o may_v understand_v more_o at_o large_a in_o the_o entrance_n of_o their_o assembly_n to_o teach_v themselves_o and_o next_o every_o one_o according_a to_o their_o ability_n the_o institution_n of_o good_a manner_n and_o rule_v of_o good_a line_n for_o all_o ordinary_a and_o common_a estate_n and_o condition_n of_o life_n in_o our_o french_a monarchy_n to_o the_o end_n that_o every_o member_n of_o this_o politic_a body_n bring_v thus_o low_a with_o evil_n and_o beat_v with_o tempestuous_a storm_n may_v somewhat_o help_v and_o profit_v it_o by_o their_o counsel_n and_o instruction_n and_o this_o thou_o may_v do_v friendly_a
that_o be_v virtue_n itself_o leave_v behind_o they_o the_o path_n of_o that_o virtue_n from_o whence_o honour_n ought_v to_o proceed_v and_o which_o be_v able_a of_o itself_o to_o adorn_v &_o deck_v man_n fall_v into_o the_o same_o reckon_n that_o ixion_n do_v who_o as_o the_o poet_n say_v have_v to_o do_v with_o a_o cloud_n suppose_v it_o to_o have_v be_v the_o goddess_n luno_fw-it whereupon_o the_o centaur_n be_v engender_v even_o so_o worldly_a man_n embrace_v vainglory_n only_o which_o be_v but_o a_o false_a shadow_n of_o true_a virtue_n all_o their_o do_n deserve_v so_o small_a commendation_n that_o if_o they_o be_v well_o weigh_v they_o shall_v rather_o be_v find_v worthy_a of_o blame_n and_o dishonour_n than_o of_o that_o honour_n which_o they_o so_o great_o seek_v and_o ask_v after_o for_o this_o cause_n the_o ancient_a roman_n build_v two_o temple_n join_v together_o the_o one_o be_v dedicate_v honor._n to_o virtue_n and_o the_o other_o to_o honour_n but_o yet_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o no_o man_n can_v enter_v into_o that_o of_o honour_n except_o first_o he_o pass_v through_o the_o other_o of_o virtue_n but_o see_v the_o way_n of_o virtue_n be_v so_o little_o frequent_v at_o this_o day_n no_o marvel_n as_o hesiodus_n say_v if_o so_o great_a a_o heap_n of_o wickedness_n be_v disperse_v through_o the_o world_n that_o all_o shame_n and_o honour_n have_v forsake_v and_o abandon_v the_o life_n of_o man_n now_o if_o a_o honest_a man_n prefer_v the_o loss_n of_o his_o honour_n before_o his_o own_o life_n to_o the_o end_n he_o be_v none_o of_o those_o that_o content_n themselves_o with_o a_o deceitful_a idea_n and_o platform_n in_o stead_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o let_v he_o learn_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o know_v wherein_o true_a glory_n and_o honour_n consist_v and_o from_o whence_o he_o may_v deserve_v praise_n which_o first_o be_v in_o goodness_n and_o justice_n second_o in_o guide_v all_o humane_a action_n prudent_o according_a to_o duty_n comeliness_n and_o honesty_n these_o be_v the_o only_a mean_n to_o get_v durable_a and_o eternal_a honour_n glory_n and_o praise_n which_o always_o follow_v virtue_n as_o the_o shadow_n do_v the_o body_n have_v this_o property_n to_o make_v man_n wise_a just_a good_a and_o prudent_a and_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o best_a excellent_a and_o most_o divine_a habit_n that_o can_v be_v in_o man_n which_o be_v the_o uprightness_n of_o reason_n and_o judgement_n and_o to_o the_o perfection_n next_o after_o god_n of_o the_o reasonable_a nature_n which_o be_v such_o a_o disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o consent_v and_o agree_v with_o itself_o therefore_o that_o goodness_n and_o excellency_n which_o proceed_v of_o wisdom_n and_o good_a instruction_n be_v the_o first_o step_n honor._n to_o come_v to_o honour_n because_o from_o that_o as_o from_o a_o lively_a fountain_n flow_v every_o virtuous_a and_o praise-woorthie_a action_n practise_v by_o a_o prudent_a man_n for_o as_o cicero_n say_v no_o man_n can_v be_v prudent_a but_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v good_a now_o this_o be_v clean_a contrary_n to_o the_o common_a opinion_n of_o those_o that_o run_v so_o swift_o now_o adays_o after_o honour_n and_o reputation_n who_o be_v ignorant_a of_o every_o good_a cause_n and_o reason_n and_o have_v corrupt_a and_o wicked_a condition_n imagine_v in_o their_o mind_n that_o so_o long_o as_o they_o do_v some_o act_n well_o like_v of_o great_a man_n honour_n and_o for_o which_o they_o may_v be_v note_v out_o by_o they_o to_o be_v man_n of_o valour_n make_v good_a penywoorth_n of_o their_o skin_n and_o of_o their_o conscience_n also_o whether_o it_o be_v in_o fight_n or_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o some_o other_o commandment_n of_o they_o they_o shall_v have_v cause_n to_o think_v themselves_o worthy_a of_o great_a honour_n and_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o other_o man_n for_o they_o suppose_v that_o honour_n ought_v to_o be_v measure_v by_o that_o good_a will_n and_o like_v which_o man_n conceive_v of_o they_o although_o they_o themselves_o be_v most_o wicked_a and_o not_o by_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o work_n whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o evil_a in_o itself_o but_o i_o wonder_v at_o their_o folly_n for_o see_v they_o have_v no_o goodness_n in_o they_o how_o can_v they_o judge_v what_o ought_v to_o be_v do_v or_o leave_v undo_v according_a to_o equity_n and_o justice_n and_o what_o honour_n will_v they_o deserve_v in_o all_o their_o action_n be_v guide_v only_o with_o a_o desire_n of_o worldly_a glory_n which_o as_o quintilian_n say_v be_v the_o chief_a &_o principal_a evil_a do_v not_o they_o also_o propound_v to_o themselves_o as_o a_o recompense_n of_o their_o pain_n and_o travel_n advancement_n to_o high_a estate_n and_o dignity_n that_o they_o may_v the_o better_o enjoy_v worldly_a pleasure_n whereby_o they_o become_v slave_n to_o mortal_a good_n and_o riches_n all_o their_o life_n time_n and_o deprive_v themselves_o of_o that_o precious_a liberty_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o which_o a_o noble_a hart_n ought_v to_o fight_v &_o to_o suffer_v death_n but_o a_o good_a man_n adorn_v with_o goodness_n and_o justice_n propound_v unto_o aim_v himself_o a_o far_o other_o end_n for_o admire_v nothing_o but_o virtue_n he_o seek_v not_o to_o be_v honour_v but_o in_o obey_v she_o in_o follow_v her_o step_n and_o in_o refer_v all_o his_o do_n to_o the_o infallible_a rule_n thereof_o he_o know_v as_o seneca_n say_v that_o glory_n be_v to_o be_v follow_v not_o to_o be_v desire_v that_o it_o be_v get_v by_o such_o a_o noble_a courage_n as_o measure_v all_o thing_n by_o conscience_n not_o do_v any_o thing_n for_o ostentation_n and_o vanity_n the_o price_n and_o reward_n which_o he_o expect_v in_o this_o life_n for_o every_o laudable_a action_n be_v to_o have_v do_v it_o and_o yet_o he_o deprive_v not_o himself_o of_o glory_n which_o remain_v immortal_a unto_o he_o among_o good_a man_n for_o his_o just_a &_o virtuous_a deed_n neither_o care_v he_o at_o all_o what_o the_o wicked_a or_o ignorant_a sort_n think_v or_o speak_v of_o he_o have_v lay_v this_o ground_n and_o foundation_n of_o all_o his_o intent_n and_o purpose_n he_o look_v not_o to_o the_o most_o beat_a way_n nor_o to_o the_o present_a state_n of_o thing_n that_o he_o may_v apply_v himself_o to_o the_o his_o soul_n to_o intrude_v himself_o among_o the_o great_a and_o if_o he_o undertake_v or_o execute_v any_o thing_n he_o have_v justice_n and_o prudence_n always_o for_o his_o guide_v and_o then_o neither_o fear_n nor_o danger_n be_v able_a to_o drive_v he_o from_o his_o determinate_a purpose_n which_o how_o soever_o it_o fall_v out_o be_v always_o no_o less_o worthy_a of_o honour_n and_o be_v that_o these_o man_n who_o ambitious_o seek_v after_o vain_a glory_n and_o greatness_n may_v say_v unto_o i_o that_o thing_n go_v far_o otherwise_o than_o i_o speak_v of_o and_o that_o their_o
