relate_v or_o to_o have_v reference_n to_o his_o posterity_n in_o matter_n of_o pollution_n and_o defilement_n and_o consequent_o of_o guilt_n and_o punishment_n by_o natural_a descent_n and_o propagation_n from_o he_o adam_n person_n the_o fountain_n and_o springhead_n of_o all_o his_o posterity_n be_v corrupt_v and_o poison_a with_o he_o except_o god_n shall_v have_v wrought_v miraculous_o and_o above_o the_o course_n of_o nature_n either_o by_o a_o through_o purge_v of_o the_o fountain_n before_o any_o stream_n issue_v from_o it_o or_o by_o dissever_a and_o untwi_v as_o consider_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o argument_n be_v usual_o bind_v up_o in_o this_o similitude_n as_o the_o hand_n be_v say_v to_o enrich_v a_o man_n because_o it_o receive_v the_o money_n or_o treasure_n whereby_o he_o be_v enrich_v so_o faith_n must_v needs_o be_v say_v to_o justify_v because_o it_o receive_v christ_n who_o be_v our_o righteousness_n and_o by_o who_o we_o be_v justify_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o the_o take_a silver_n or_o gold_n with_o the_o hand_n that_o enrich_v a_o man_n no_o nor_o the_o silver_n or_o gold_n so_o take_v that_o simple_o enrich_v he_o a_o man_n may_v be_v never_o the_o rich_a for_o receive_v great_a sum_n of_o money_n of_o silver_n and_o gold_n nay_o a_o man_n may_v be_v much_o the_o poor_a and_o more_o miserable_a for_o receive_v or_o take_v money_n if_o he_o receive_v or_o take_v it_o contrary_a to_o the_o law_n as_o when_o a_o thief_n break_v into_o a_o house_n and_o take_v away_o much_o treasure_n with_o he_o or_o put_v forth_o his_o hand_n to_o take_v a_o man_n purse_n by_o the_o highway_n side_n his_o hand_n in_o these_o case_n can_v be_v say_v to_o make_v he_o rich_a because_o it_o receive_v treasure_n neither_o do_v the_o treasure_n so_o receive_v make_v he_o rich_a but_o poor_a and_o miserable_a because_o now_o he_o be_v obnoxious_a to_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n and_o own_v his_o life_n and_o all_o he_o be_v worth_a beside_o unto_o it_o therefore_o if_o a_o man_n hand_n enrich_v he_o by_o receive_v that_o which_o do_v enrich_v he_o it_o do_v it_o not_o simple_o as_o it_o receive_v it_o for_o then_o it_o shall_v do_v it_o always_o and_o in_o all_o case_n whatsoever_o but_o it_o do_v it_o by_o virtue_n of_o that_o law_n or_o agreement_n of_o the_o state_n where_o he_o live_v which_o secure_v a_o man_n in_o the_o quiet_a possession_n and_o enjoyment_n of_o such_o money_n or_o treasure_n as_o he_o lawful_o receive_v to_o his_o own_o use_n so_o the_o devil_n shall_v believe_v on_o christ_n hope_v or_o expect_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o he_o as_o man_n do_v who_o believe_a be_v justify_v yet_o they_o shall_v be_v never_o the_o near_o any_o justification_n by_o he_o though_o he_o be_v a_o treasure_n of_o righteousness_n why_o because_o god_n have_v make_v no_o law_n promise_v covenant_n or_o agreement_n with_o they_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v justify_v by_o faith_n therefore_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o they_o to_o believe_v as_o man_n do_v yet_o christ_n will_v be_v no_o more_o any_o righteousness_n unto_o they_o than_o lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n i_o be_o far_o from_o say_v or_o conceive_v that_o any_o faith_n shall_v justify_v but_o that_o only_a which_o lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n yea_o i_o grant_v and_o very_o believe_v that_o whereas_o there_o be_v many_o other_o act_n of_o faith_n beside_o believe_v or_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n as_o viz._n to_o comfort_n and_o strengthen_v and_o purify_v the_o heart_n of_o those_o that_o believe_v and_o the_o like_a yet_o that_o decree_n or_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n which_o i_o conceive_v make_v faith_n justify_v concurre_v with_o it_o towards_o this_o great_a effect_n only_o in_o that_o act_n of_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n and_o not_o in_o any_o of_o the_o other_o so_o that_o in_o this_o sense_n i_o grant_v &_o hold_v that_o faith_n may_v be_v say_v to_o justify_v as_o it_o lay_v hold_v of_o christ_n comparative_o viz._n as_o this_o act_n of_o faith_n be_v distinguish_v from_o those_o other_o act_n which_o it_o likewise_o produce_v it_o do_v not_o justify_v either_o as_o it_o comfort_v or_o as_o it_o purify_v the_o heart_n etc._n etc._n but_o only_o as_o it_o relate_v to_o christ_n and_o lay_v hold_v on_o he_o this_o only_a be_v that_o which_o i_o deny_v that_o this_o act_n of_o faith_n whereby_o it_o receive_v or_o lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n have_v that_o in_o the_o nature_n or_o inherent_o in_o it_o or_o any_o otherwise_o or_o by_o any_o other_o mean_n then_o from_o the_o will_n and_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n which_o make_v it_o available_a unto_o justification_n it_o have_v no_o foundation_n
god_n in_o their_o work_n towards_o the_o effect_n have_v other_o efficient_n under_o it_o which_o work_n likewise_o towards_o the_o same_o effect_n but_o depend_v upon_o it_o the_o principal_a cause_n in_o their_o work_n and_o these_o be_v cause_n less_o principal_a or_o instrumental_a the_o carpenter_n be_v the_o principal_a efficient_a cause_n of_o the_o house_n his_o axe_n see_v and_o hammer_n etc._n etc._n be_v but_o instrumental_a efficient_n because_o though_o these_o conduce_v and_o contribute_v somewhat_o towards_o the_o build_n of_o it_o yet_o they_o be_v assume_v and_o order_v in_o their_o work_n by_o the_o carpenter_n and_o will_v do_v nothing_o if_o they_o be_v not_o act_v and_o move_v by_o he_o whereas_o himself_o work_v independant_o be_v act_v and_o guide_v in_o his_o work_n by_o a_o principle_n within_o himself_o it_o be_v true_a in_o a_o sense_n the_o carpenter_n may_v be_v say_v to_o depend_v upon_o his_o instrument_n in_o work_v viz._n as_o be_v unable_a to_o work_v or_o build_v without_o they_o but_o in_o point_n of_o causalitie_n that_o only_o be_v count_v a_o dependence_n when_o a_o thing_n be_v either_o assume_v support_v or_o direct_v by_o another_o in_o its_o efficiency_n none_o of_o which_o can_v be_v verify_v of_o the_o carpenter_n in_o respect_n of_o his_o instrument_n wherewith_o he_o work_v again_o of_o cause_n efficient_a whether_o create_v or_o increated_a principal_a or_o less_o principal_a some_o be_v natural_a some_o artificial_a and_o some_o moral_n by_o the_o efficient_a natural_a i_o mean_v that_o cause_n which_o have_v its_o efficiency_n or_o contribute_v towards_o the_o effect_n by_o the_o exercise_v or_o put_v forthâ—_n of_o some_o power_n that_o be_v natural_a and_o essential_a to_o it_o thus_o the_o sun_n be_v the_o natural_a efficient_a cause_n of_o the_o light_n in_o the_o air_n and_o of_o all_o other_o sublunary_a effect_n which_o it_o produce_v because_o it_o produce_v they_o all_o only_a by_o the_o exercise_n and_o put_v forth_o of_o such_o principle_n as_o of_o light_n motion_n influence_n etc._n etc._n as_o be_v natural_a to_o it_o in_o this_o sense_n that_o kind_n of_o efficient_a which_o otherwise_o be_v call_v voluntary_a i._n that_o work_v free_o and_o with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o its_o own_o work_n and_o be_v contradistinguish_v to_o that_o which_o be_v pure_o and_o simple_o natural_a may_v sometime_o and_o in_o respect_n of_o some_o effect_n be_v term_v natural_a also_o as_o viz._n when_o it_o act_v towards_o any_o effect_n by_o any_o faculty_n principle_n or_o power_n that_o be_v natural_a to_o it_o in_o this_o sense_n david_n may_v be_v call_v the_o natural_a efficient_a cause_n of_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o stone_n wherewith_o goliath_n be_v slay_v yea_o the_o increated_a efficient_a cause_n himself_o god_n i_o mean_v who_o in_o other_o respect_n be_v term_v the_o supernatural_a efficient_a may_v in_o this_o sense_n be_v call_v the_o natural_a efficient_a or_o produce_v cause_n of_o the_o world_n and_o so_o of_o all_o other_o effect_n whatsoever_o produce_v by_o he_o viz._n as_o he_o effect_v they_o either_o by_o that_o power_n or_o by_o that_o authority_n which_o be_v natural_a or_o essential_a to_o he_o second_o the_o efficient_a cause_n artificial_a be_v that_o which_o produce_v its_o effect_n by_o the_o exercise_n of_o some_o acquire_v or_o superad_v principle_n or_o habit_n of_o art_n but_o of_o this_o kind_n of_o cause_n we_o shall_v have_v no_o use_n in_o the_o business_n of_o justification_n therefore_o we_o pass_v by_o it_o three_o and_o last_o the_o moral_a efficient_a cause_n be_v that_o which_o contribute_v towards_o a_o effect_n by_o incline_v or_o move_v the_o will_n or_o desire_v of_o the_o natural_a efficient_a cause_n capable_a of_o such_o motion_n towards_o the_o do_n or_o effect_v of_o any_o thing_n thus_o first_o the_o wage_n for_o which_o a_o workman_n contract_v to_o build_v a_o house_n the_o knowledge_n or_o sight_n of_o another_o man_n misery_n in_o any_o kind_n be_v persuade_v to_o administer_v comfort_n or_o relief_n to_o he_o the_o misery_n of_o the_o man_n be_v know_v to_o he_o be_v the_o latter_a kind_n of_o cause_n of_o that_o comfort_n or_o relief_n which_o he_o administer_v and_o the_o inward_a tenderness_n or_o compassionatnesse_n of_o his_o nature_n towards_o those_o formal_a cause_n of_o justification_n 3_o the_o formal_a cause_n of_o justification_n sect_n 19_o must_v needs_o be_v as_o we_o shall_v hereafter_o further_o demonstrate_v the_o proper_a impression_n or_o effect_n of_o the_o act_n of_o justification_n and_o consequent_o the_o effect_n of_o god_n who_o justifi_v or_o exercise_v that_o act_n that_o be_v of_o god_n the_o father_n as_o himself_o right_o suppose_v p._n 137._o whereas_o that_o communion_n between_o christ_n and_o we_o which_o he_o speak_v of_o arise_v and_o flow_v as_o himself_o also_o acknowledge_v in_o the_o passage_n cite_v still_o perform_v by_o god_n after_o or_o upon_o our_o believe_a and_o consequent_o after_o or_o upon_o our_o complete_a justification_n it_o undeniable_o follow_v that_o this_o communion_n can_v be_v the_o formal_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n because_o this_o be_v accomplish_v and_o accomplish_v it_o can_v be_v without_o the_o formal_a part_n or_o cause_n of_o it_o in_o be_v before_o the_o other_o receive_v its_o be_v 5_o sect_n 20_o if_o the_o communion_n that_o be_v between_o christ_n and_o we_o be_v the_o formal_a cause_n of_o justification_n christ_n himself_o may_v be_v true_o say_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o same_o act_n of_o justification_n with_o we_o this_o be_v evident_a because_o the_o communion_n speak_v of_o relate_v aswell_o to_o he_o as_o to_o we_o and_o be_v inherent_a in_o he_o as_o much_o as_o in_o we_o and_o whatsoever_o partake_v of_o the_o same_o form_n or_o formal_a cause_n with_o another_o be_v doubtless_o in_o respect_n of_o this_o form_n capable_a of_o the_o same_o denomination_n with_o it_o if_o the_o form_n of_o that_o justification_n be_v as_o well_o or_o as_o much_o in_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v in_o we_o christ_n may_v as_o well_o be_v say_v to_o be_v justify_v thereby_o as_o we_o but_o to_o say_v that_o christ_n shall_v be_v justify_v by_o that_o communion_n which_o be_v between_o he_o and_o we_o be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d a_o hard_a say_v to_o the_o tender_a care_n of_o christian_n therefore_o certain_o though_o that_o communion_n which_o be_v between_o christ_n and_o we_o be_v a_o sweet_a and_o precious_a thing_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o the_o formal_a cause_n of_o justification_n no_o more_o than_o samuel_n be_v therefore_o isaak_n abraham_n son_n because_o he_o be_v a_o good_a son_n like_o he_o and_o 6o._o if_o the_o communion_n between_o christ_n and_o we_o be_v the_o formal_a cause_n of_o justificatton_n then_o be_v not_o the_o reciprocal_a imputation_n of_o our_o sin_n to_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o full_a satisfaction_n to_o we_o this_o cause_n also_o which_o be_v yet_o affirm_v by_o the_o same_o author_n and_o with_o the_o same_o breath_n this_o consequence_n be_v pregnant_a and_o conquer_a because_o this_o reciprocal_a imputation_n be_v a_o act_n of_o god_n the_o father_n and_o so_o suppose_v by_o the_o author_n himself_o and_o if_o right_o understand_v not_o with_o any_o variation_n from_o the_o truth_n whereas_o the_o communion_n mention_v flow_v from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o have_v be_v already_o observe_v and_o be_v here_o likewise_o express_o affirm_v now_o unpossible_a it_o be_v that_o two_o act_n real_o differ_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o shall_v ever_o so_o combine_v or_o incorporate_v as_o to_o make_v the_o form_n or_o formal_a cause_n of_o any_o thing_n which_o as_o have_v be_v say_v be_v always_o a_o single_a and_o simple_a be_v and_o void_a of_o composition_n this_o reason_n stand_v in_o force_n though_o we_o take_v his_o reciprocal_a imputation_n which_o he_o join_v with_o his_o communion_n to_o make_v up_o the_o form_n of_o justification_n in_o a_o passive_a sense_n viz._n for_o the_o effect_n of_o that_o act_n of_o and_o satisfaction_n unto_o we_o this_o be_v evident_a because_o as_o the_o render_v christ_n obnoxious_a unto_o death_n be_v a_o thing_n real_o differ_v and_o of_o opposite_a consideration_n from_o the_o make_n of_o we_o righteous_a and_o capable_a of_o life_n so_o the_o act_n by_o which_o these_o be_v effect_v must_v needs_o be_v real_o differ_v also_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o now_o as_o have_v be_v already_o argue_v it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o any_o form_n or_o formal_a cause_n shall_v be_v make_v of_o any_o plurality_n of_o ingredient_n or_o be_v a_o composition_n make_v of_o several_a thing_n real_o differ_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o 2_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o this_o reciprocal_a imputation_n shall_v be_v the_o form_n we_o inquire_v after_o because_o only_o the_o believe_a sinner_n
