it_o they_o may_v convince_v and_o reprove_v their_o obstinacy_n and_o superstition_n and_o not_o confirm_v they_o in_o it_o therefore_o here_o be_v a_o offence_n unjust_o take_v not_o just_o give_v so_o much_o in_o way_n of_o open_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n observe_v 1_o observe_v 1._o in_o that_o these_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n come_v from_o jerusalem_n into_o galilee_n to_o cavil_n speak_v of_o etc._n etc._n observe_v 2_o observe_v 2._o see_v here_o the_o property_n of_o malice_n which_o be_v to_o make_v fault_n in_o other_o where_o none_o be_v charge_v and_o accuse_v they_o wrongful_o as_o guilty_a of_o sin_n when_o it_o be_v not_o so_o thus_o do_v these_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n charge_n christ_n disciple_n and_o blame_v they_o as_o profane_a person_n because_o they_o be_v with_o unwashen_n hand_n when_o they_o be_v indeed_o never_o the_o more_o profane_a or_o irreligious_a for_o this_o so_o before_o chap._n 2._o 24._o they_o accuse_v they_o as_o breaker_n of_o the_o sabbath_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o they_o often_o lay_v grievous_a crime_n to_o our_o saviour_n himself_o whereof_o he_o be_v not_o guilty_a sometime_o charge_v he_o as_o a_o blasphemer_n sometime_o as_o a_o drunkard_n and_o glutton_n sometime_o as_o a_o friend_n of_o publican_n and_o sinner_n sometime_o
think_v of_o such_o as_o be_v content_a to_o forgive_v some_o wrong_n and_o some_o enemy_n but_o not_o all_o they_o can_v perhaps_o put_v up_o some_o small_a or_o petty_a injury_n but_o if_o great_a injury_n or_o indignity_n be_v offer_v they_o they_o will_v not_o forgive_v but_o bear_v malice_n and_o seek_v revenge_n etc._n etc._n this_o be_v no_o true_a forgiveness_n and_o so_o no_o true_a love_n but_o counterfeit_a such_o must_v remember_v these_o word_n forgive_v if_o you_o have_v aught_o against_o any_o etc._n etc._n observe_v 2_o observe_v 2._o in_o that_o our_o saviour_n presuppose_v here_o that_o his_o disciple_n shall_v have_v enemy_n who_o shall_v wrong_v and_o abuse_v they_o and_o against_o who_o they_o shall_v have_v just_a matter_n of_o complaint_n for_o such_o wrong_n hence_o gather_v that_o christian_n must_v make_v account_n to_o have_v enemy_n and_o to_o meet_v with_o wrong_n and_o abuse_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n yea_o with_o many_o wrong_n and_o injury_n they_o must_v make_v account_n sometime_o yea_o oftentimes_o to_o have_v matter_n of_o just_a complaint_n against_o other_o for_o wrong_v do_v unto_o they_o this_o be_v here_o take_v for_o grant_v and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o need_n of_o forgiveness_n and_o â—o_o this_o exhortation_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v in_o vain_a that_o which_o our_o world_n therefore_o if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o be_v not_o discourage_v but_o remember_v matth._n 5._o 11._o bless_a be_v you_o when_o man_n shall_v revile_v you_o and_o persecute_v you_o and_o as_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n and_o therefore_o to_o pray_v and_o labour_n for_o christian_a courage_n patience_n and_o meekness_n to_o bear_v such_o wrong_n and_o abuse_n as_o shall_v be_v offer_v we_o see_v it_o can_v be_v avoid_v but_o we_o must_v have_v enemy_n and_o must_v be_v much_o wrong_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n we_o have_v therefore_o need_v of_o patience_n and_o meekness_n to_o bear_v such_o wrong_n and_o of_o courage_n to_o stand_v against_o all_o enemy_n oppose_v we_o especial_o for_o well-doing_n some_o say_v they_o can_v endure_v to_o be_v wrong_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v thou_o can_v not_o be_v a_o good_a christian_a or_o true_a disciple_n of_o christ_n for_o if_o thou_o will_v be_v such_o a_o one_o indeed_o thou_o must_v make_v account_n to_o have_v enemy_n and_o to_o be_v much_o wrong_v etc._n etc._n the_o disciple_n be_v not_o above_o his_o master_n etc._n etc._n matth._n 10._o mark_v 11._o 25._o and_o when_o you_o stand_v pray_v forgive_v etc._n etc._n that_o your_o father_n also_o which_o be_v in_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n 1630._o may_v 2._o 1630._o of_o our_o saviour_n exhortation_n of_o his_o disciple_n to_o the_o forgive_n of_o enemy_n and_o wrong_n when_o they_o come_v before_o god_n to_o pray_v we_o have_v hear_v before_o now_o follow_v the_o reason_n enforce_v this_o exhortation_n 1._o from_o the_o benefit_n and_o qualification_n require_v in_o they_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o god_n forgiveness_n show_v they_o to_o be_v such_o as_o be_v forgive_v of_o god_n and_o consequent_o a_o mean_n by_o which_o they_o may_v soon_o as_o he_o begin_v to_o take_v upon_o he_o his_o public_a call_v which_o be_v to_o be_v the_o deliverer_n of_o god_n people_n i_o say_v so_o soon_o as_o he_o do_v but_o begin_v this_o deliverance_n of_o god_n people_n in_o avenge_a the_o cause_n of_o a_o israelite_n against_o a_o egyptian_a present_o the_o devil_n so_o stir_v against_o he_o that_o he_o be_v fain_o to_o fly_v into_o the_o land_n of_o madian_n and_o to_o live_v there_o 40_o year_n the_o apostle_n whilst_o they_o live_v as_o private_a man_n we_o read_v not_o of_o any_o temptation_n they_o be_v trouble_v with_o but_o after_o when_o they_o have_v live_v but_o a_o while_n in_o their_o apostolical_a office_n the_o devil_n desire_v to_o winnow_v they_o luke_n 22._o 31._o so_o paul_n whilst_o he_o live_v a_o on_o the_o sabbath_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o but_o the_o devil_n who_o policy_n it_o be_v thus_o to_o stir_v up_o hindrance_n to_o disturb_v we_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n service_n upon_o that_o day_n again_o what_o hour_n of_o the_o day_n be_v there_o in_o which_o we_o find_v ourselves_o more_o disquiet_v and_o out_o of_o temper_n than_o at_o that_o hour_n and_o that_o time_n which_o we_o use_v to_o set_v apâ—â—t_v for_o private_a prayer_n this_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o practice_n of_o satan_n then_o to_o molest_v we_o and_o to_o cast_v stnmble_v block_n in_o our_o way_n when_o we_o shall_v be_v best_o employ_v he_o know_v that_o at_o such_o time_n we_o go_v about_o that_o which_o hinder_v his_o kingdom_n therefore_o he_o labour_v so_o to_o hinder_v we_o use_v 1_o use_v 1._o be_v not_o discourage_v from_o good_a duty_n though_o we_o meet_v with_o many_o hindrance_n and_o disturbance_n at_o such_o time_n as_o we_o go_v about_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o omit_v not_o the_o duty_n because_o of_o such_o impediment_n as_o the_o devil_n cast_v before_o thou_o but_o break_v through_o they_o all_o rather_o than_o neglect_v a_o good_a duty_n which_o thou_o shall_v perform_v as_o private_a prayer_n reading_n meditation_n etc._n etc._n let_v not_o all_o the_o stumble_a block_n which_o satan_n throw_v in_o thy_o way_n stop_v or_o hinder_v thy_o proceed_n in_o the_o constant_a performance_n of_o such_o duty_n but_o leap_v over_o all_o such_o block_n rather_o than_o be_v stop_v by_o they_o in_o thy_o good_a course_n know_v that_o this_o be_v usual_a tempt_v luther_n no_o sign_n of_o grace_n to_o be_v without_o temptation_n but_o to_o strive_v against_o they_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o etc._n etc._n use_v 3_o use_v 3._o this_o be_v for_o the_o comfort_n of_o such_o who_o be_v much_o molest_v with_o satan_n temptation_n and_o deep_o humble_v by_o they_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v out_o of_o god_n favour_n and_o to_o be_v none_o appointment_n and_o dispose_n as_o christ_n can_v not_o have_v be_v tempt_v of_o satan_n if_o the_o spirit_n have_v not_o drive_v and_o move_v he_o to_o go_v to_o be_v tempt_v so_o the_o devil_n can_v by_o his_o temptation_n molest_v any_o of_o god_n child_n unless_o god_n direct_v and_o dispose_v these_o temptation_n unto_o they_o by_o give_v power_n and_o permission_n unto_o satan_n to_o tempt_v they_o reas_n reas_n the_o devil_n power_n be_v limit_v and_o restrain_v by_o god_n power_n and_o providence_n which_o be_v above_o he_o he_o be_v potestas_fw-la sub_fw-la potestate_fw-la as_o st._n austin_n say_v he_o can_v not_o molest_v the_o herd_n of_o swine_n without_o leave_n mat._n 8._o much_o less_o can_v he_o tempt_v or_o molest_v god_n child_n without_o god_n direction_n and_o permission_n we_o see_v this_o in_o job_n who_o the_o devil_n can_v not_o touch_v any_o further_a than_o god_n give_v leave_v to_o he_o 1_o chron._n 21._o 1._o it_o be_v say_v that_o satan_n provoke_v david_n to_o number_n israel_n and_o yet_o 2_o sam._n 24._o 1._o it_o be_v say_v also_o that_o god_n move_v he_o to_o do_v it_o this_o show_v that_o satan_n can_v tempt_v or_o provoke_v any_o to_o sin_n further_o than_o god_n permit_v he_o to_o do_v it_o use_v 1_o use_v 1._o see_v the_o temptation_n of_o god_n child_n come_v unto_o they_o by_o god_n special_a providence_n and_o appointment_n this_o must_v teach_v we_o not_o too_o much_o to_o fear_v such_o temptation_n nor_o to_o be_v discourage_v by_o they_o for_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o he_o which_o dispose_v they_o to_o we_o will_v assist_v we_o in_o they_o and_o enable_v we_o to_o withstand_v they_o so_o as_o the_o devil_n shall_v not_o have_v his_o will_n of_o we_o the_o lord_n direct_v
but_o of_o this_o afterward_o this_o malice_n of_o the_o devil_n against_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n of_o man_n have_v be_v ever_o since_o the_o beginning_n and_o it_o be_v not_o abate_v but_o increase_v in_o time_n so_o that_o it_o be_v now_o great_a than_o ever_o it_o be_v rev._n 12._o 12._o use_v 1_o use_v 1._o see_v god_n goodness_n and_o mercy_n in_o limit_v and_o restrain_v the_o he_o and_o he_o do_v many_o good_a thing_n and_o yet_o neither_o have_v enough_o nor_o do_v enough_o to_o prove_v he_o a_o good_a christian_n he_o bear_v a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o like_n and_o reverence_n to_o john_n person_n and_o doctrine_n be_v willing_a and_o desirous_a to_o hear_v he_o and_o ready_a to_o obey_v he_o in_o many_o thing_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o he_o show_v he_o special_a kindness_n and_o mercy_n in_o keep_v he_o alive_a and_o safe_a when_o herodias_n will_v have_v kill_v he_o and_o yet_o all_o this_o while_n herod_n remain_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o respect_v the_o mind_n and_o understanding_n the_o second_o the_o heart_n and_o affection_n the_o three_o the_o outward_a life_n and_o conversation_n touch_v the_o first_o the_o mind_n and_o understanding_n a_o wicked_a man_n may_v be_v enlighten_v with_o a_o good_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v and_o discourse_v ready_o of_o it_o to_o other_o yea_o to_o preach_v it_o to_o other_o as_o judas_n do_v hebr._n 6._o 4._o such_o as_o commit_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v word_n of_o god_n and_o a_o kind_n of_o joy_n and_o delight_n in_o it_o for_o a_o time_n see_v for_o this_o hebr._n 6._o and_o luke_n 8._o 13._o and_o here_o in_o the_o example_n of_o herod_n so_o also_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v be_v affect_v with_o a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o reverence_n to_o god_n minister_n and_o to_o other_o good_a man_n as_o we_o see_v also_o in_o herod_n here_o he_o may_v also_o have_v some_o other_o good_a affection_n as_o a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o desire_v after_o heaven_n and_o salvation_n such_o as_o be_v in_o wicked_a balaam_n wish_v to_o die_v the_o death_n of_o the_o righteous_a etc._n etc._n and_o hebr._n 6._o 5._o they_o be_v say_v to_o taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v again_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v be_v affect_v
constraint_n quest_n quest_n why_o do_v our_o saviour_n urge_v his_o disciple_n thus_o to_o leave_v he_o and_o to_o go_v over_o by_o ship_n alone_o to_o bethsaida_n answ_n answ_n 1._o that_o this_o learn_v more_o and_o more_o to_o depend_v and_o rest_v on_o christ_n power_n and_o providence_n in_o all_o trouble_n and_o danger_n observe_v observe_v in_o that_o christ_n send_v his_o disciple_n away_o by_o ship_n over_o the_o sea_n where_o he_o know_v they_o will_v be_v in_o trouble_n and_o danger_n by_o reason_n of_o a_o storm_n arise_v in_o the_o night_n etc._n etc._n hence_o gather_v be_v of_o good_a comfort_n when_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o lord_n herein_o deal_v with_o we_o no_o otherwise_o then_o he_o have_v do_v former_o with_o other_o of_o his_o most_o excellent_a saint_n and_o servant_n as_o the_o prophet_n apostle_n martyr_n yea_o christ_n himself_o therefore_o in_o this_o case_n submit_v to_o god_n will_n with_o patience_n and_o contentedness_n and_o remember_v withal_o for_o our_o comfort_n that_o though_o god_n may_v suffer_v the_o wicked_a in_o some_o sort_n to_o have_v their_o will_n of_o we_o yet_o not_o absolute_o to_o do_v what_o they_o listen_v to_o servant_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o body_n and_o outward_a estate_n etc._n etc._n and_o if_o we_o shall_v so_o judge_v we_o shall_v condemn_v the_o holy_a prophet_n apostle_n martyr_n yea_o christ_n himself_o observe_v 3._o see_v here_o the_o extreme_a rage_n and_o malice_n of_o the_o wicked_a against_o the_o true_a saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n in_o that_o they_o do_v not_o only_o hate_v they_o and_o set_v themselves_o against_o they_o as_o enemy_n but_o also_o do_v desire_n and_o seek_v to_o have_v their_o will_n of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o satisfy_v their_o own_o malicious_a mind_n and_o will_n in_o abuse_v and_o wrong_v they_o all_o manner_n of_o way_n so_o far_o as_o god_n permit_v they_o they_o do_v not_o desire_v or_o care_n to_o do_v what_o be_v just_a and_o equal_a to_o they_o but_o what_o be_v please_v to_o their_o own_o malicious_a will_n to_o do_v even_o what_o they_o listen_v unto_o they_o that_o be_v to_o spend_v the_o utmost_a of_o their_o malice_n upon_o they_o and_o against_o they_o thus_o herod_n and_o herodias_n do_v even_o what_o they_o list_v to_o john_n baptist_n they_o even_o fulfil_v their_o own_o malicious_a will_n against_o he_o and_o upon_o he_o in_o imprison_v and_o put_v he_o to_o death_n psal_n 12._o 4._o david_n enemy_n resolve_v with_o themselves_o that_o with_o their_o tongue_n they_o will_v prevail_v against_o he_o etc._n etc._n so_o the_o wicked_a jew_n though_o they_o can_v all_o edge_n no_o just_a cause_n unto_o pilate_n why_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v condemn_v and_o crucify_v yet_o to_o satisfy_v their_o own_o malicious_a will_n against_o he_o they_o will_v needs_o have_v it_o do_v that_o by_o this_o mean_v they_o may_v wreck_v their_o malice_n and_o envy_n upon_o he_o to_o the_o full_a so_o the_o than_o to_o satisfy_v their_o own_o malicious_a mind_n and_o will_n by_o offer_v unto_o they_o the_o great_a wrong_n and_o abuse_n which_o they_o be_v any_o way_n able_a use_v use_v this_o shall_v move_v we_o to_o acknowledge_v and_o magnify_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n in_o curb_v and_o restrain_v this_o extreme_a rage_n and_o malice_n of_o the_o wicked_a against_o his_o saint_n and_o not_o suffer_v it_o so_o far_o to_o break_v out_o as_o otherwise_o it_o will_v it_o be_v god_n great_a mercy_n to_o set_v bound_n and_o limit_n to_o this_o malice_n of_o the_o wicked_a which_o of_o itself_o be_v boundless_a have_v no_o measure_n for_o although_o the_o lord_n do_v suffer_v the_o wicked_a sometime_o to_o satisfy_v their_o own_o will_n and_o malicious_a desire_n and_o purpose_n against_o his_o faithful_a servant_n yet_o he_o do_v not_o always_o suffer_v this_o neither_o do_v he_o at_o any_o time_n absolute_o give_v up_o his_o servant_n unto_o the_o malicious_a will_n of_o their_o enemy_n but_o he_o so_o limit_v and_o restrain_v the_o malice_n of_o the_o wicked_a that_o they_o go_v no_o further_o in_o show_v the_o same_o against_o his_o saint_n than_o he_o do_v think_v good_a to_o permit_v and_o suffer_v they_o be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o restrain_v the_o outrageous_a malice_n of_o the_o wicked_a they_o will_v soon_o devour_v and_o utter_o root_v out_o the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n from_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n let_v we_o therefore_o bless_v god_n and_o be_v true_o thankful_a for_o this_o his_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n now_o follow_v the_o ground_n or_o reason_n of_o john_n baptist_n come_v viz._n the_o testimony_n of_o the_o scripture_n which_o foretold_v it_o as_o it_o be_v write_v of_o he_o that_o be_v as_o it_o be_v foretold_v or_o testify_v before_o of_o he_o in_o the_o writing_n of_o the_o prophet_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n now_o these_o word_n seem_v to_o have_v relation_n chief_o to_o the_o come_n of_o elias_n or_o john_n baptist_n mention_v by_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o first_o word_n of_o this_o verse_n and_o not_o so_o much_o unto_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v suffer_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o wicked_a enemy_n for_o we_o do_v not_o read_v in_o the_o prophet_n of_o any_o express_a mention_n make_v of_o the_o suffering_n of_o john_n baptist_n which_o he_o shall_v suffer_v at_o his_o come_n but_o his_o come_n we_o find_v to_o be_v express_o foretell_v by_o the_o prophet_n malachi_n chap._n 4._o 5._o behold_v i_o will_v send_v you_o elijah_n the_o prophet_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v john_n baptist_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n of_o elias_n etc._n etc._n observe_v observe_v in_o that_o our_o saviour_n here_o affirm_v that_o the_o prophecy_n of_o malachi_n touch_v prophecy_n also_o of_o the_o destruction_n of_o jerusalem_n and_o the_o temple_n by_o the_o roman_n foretold_v by_o our_o saviour_n matth._n 24._o all_o these_o and_o many_o other_o have_v be_v already_o fulfil_v in_o their_o due_a time_n though_o long_o after_o they_o be_v foretold_v which_o be_v one_o special_a evidence_n to_o prove_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o true_a and_o 2._o the_o ground_n or_o reason_n of_o the_o exhortation_n by_o which_o he_o enforce_v it_o be_v take_v from_o the_o great_a power_n and_o efficacy_n of_o true_a faith_n in_o that_o it_o do_v enable_v such_o as_o be_v endue_v with_o it_o to_o do_v miraculous_a or_o wonderful_a thing_n even_o above_o and_o contrary_a to_o nature_n which_o be_v signify_v by_o the_o remove_n of_o a_o mountain_n etc._n etc._n ver_fw-la 23._o of_o the_o first_o have_v faith_n in_o god_n our_o saviour_n do_v not_o here_o speak_v of_o a_o justify_v faith_n whereby_o we_o apprehend_v christ_n as_o our_o righteousness_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o acceptation_n of_o we_o into_o god_n favour_n but_o of_o that_o faith_n whereby_o we_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o do_v rest_n and_o rely_v upon_o he_o for_o the_o obtain_n of_o all_o such_o thing_n as_o we_o desire_v and_o be_v needful_a and_o fit_a for_o we_o to_o be_v partaker_n of_o so_o that_o the_o faith_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o affiance_n trust_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o desire_v and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o so_o far_o as_o be_v fit_a and_o expedient_a for_o we_o i_o say_v so_o far_o as_o be_v fit_a for_o we_o because_o faith_n do_v not_o cause_v we_o to_o trust_v in_o god_n or_o to_o rely_v on_o he_o for_o all_o thing_n simple_o which_o we_o desire_v for_o we_o sometime_o desire_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v unfit_a for_o we_o but_o it_o cause_v we_o to_o trust_v on_o god_n for_o such_o thing_n as_o we_o desire_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o they_o be_v fit_a for_o for_o we_o that_o be_v so_o far_o as_o stand_v with_o the_o will_n of_o god_n for_o that_o only_o be_v fit_a which_o he_o see_v to_o be_v fit_a for_o we_o further_n touch_v this_o affiance_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o those_o thing_n we_o desire_v and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o two_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v note_v 1._o that_o it_o be_v distinguish_v from_o a_o justify_v faith_n not_o as_o a_o different_a kind_n of_o faith_n but_o only_o as_o a_o distinct_a operation_n or_o work_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n for_o it_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n for_o kind_n by_o which_o the_o true_a believer_n do_v apprehend_v christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n etc._n etc._n and_o by_o which_o he_o do_v believe_v in_o god_n and_o trust_v on_o he_o for_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o he_o desire_v and_o be_v necessary_a and_o fit_a for_o he_o to_o receive_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o only_o these_o be_v distinguish_v as_o two_o divers_a and_o different_a operation_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n 2._o note_v that_o whereas_o some_o learned_a divine_n do_v make_v this_o affaince_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n to_o be_v a_o fruit_n or_o effect_n flow_v from_o faith_n there_o be_v other_o as_o learned_a who_o conceive_v it_o rather_o as_o a_o immediate_a and_o proper_a act_n or_o work_v of_o faith_n and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o true_a and_o more_o sound_a opinion_n in_o god_n in_o the_o original_a it_o be_v have_v the_o faith_n of_o god_n now_o it_o may_v be_v call_v the_o faith_n of_o god_n in_o two_o respect_n 1._o in_o regard_n of_o the_o efficient_a cause_n because_o god_n only_o be_v the_o author_n worker_n or_o giver_n of_o all_o true_a faith_n ephes_n 2._o 8._o faith_n be_v call_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o gal._n 5._o 22._o it_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n 2._o in_o respect_n of_o the_o object_n or_o matter_n of_o it_o which_o it_o do_v apprehend_v and_o look_v at_o principal_o which_o be_v god_n himself_o and_o thus_o we_o be_v to_o take_v it_o here_o the_o faith_n of_o god_n be_v to_o be_v take_v here_o not_o active_a for_o that_o faith_n or_o affiance_n which_o god_n work_v in_o we_o but_o passive_a for_o that_o faith_n whereby_o we_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o trust_v on_o he_o beza_n now_o further_o our_o faith_n or_o confidence_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o god_n or_o to_o be_v fix_v on_o he_o in_o two_o respect_n 1._o in_o respect_n of_o his_o divine_a nature_n and_o essence_n simple_o consider_v together_o with_o the_o distinction_n of_o person_n in_o the_o trinity_n 2._o in_o respect_n of_o the_o essential_a property_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n as_o his_o wisdom_n power_n goodness_n mercy_n etc._n etc._n now_o here_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v both_o these_o so_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n be_v brief_o this_o in_o effect_n q._n d._n labour_n by_o true_a faith_n to_o believe_v in_o god_n that_o be_v to_o trust_v in_o his_o divine_a nature_n and_o property_n and_o to_o rely_v upon_o the_o same_o for_o the_o receive_n and_o obtain_v of_o both_o that_o gift_n and_o power_n of_o miracle_n which_o you_o desire_v as_o also_o of_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o you_o do_v desire_n and_o be_v needful_a and_o fit_a for_o you_o now_o that_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n may_v appear_v 1._o by_o the_o scope_n and_o occasion_n of_o they_o which_o be_v this_o peter_n and_o the_o other_o disciple_n admire_v and_o wonder_v at_o the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n in_o curse_v the_o figtree_n and_o cause_v it_o so_o sudden_o to_o wither_v etc._n etc._n and_o withal_o acquaint_v our_o saviour_n with_o the_o matter_n do_v hereby_o not_o only_o show_v their_o desire_n to_o be_v instruct_v and_o better_o inform_v by_o our_o saviour_n touch_v the_o end_n and_o use_v of_o that_o miracle_n but_o withal_o it_o be_v most_o probable_a that_o they_o do_v also_o intimate_v a_o desire_n in_o themselves_o to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o like_a power_n or_o gift_n of_o work_a miracle_n which_o they_o see_v to_o be_v in_o our_o saviour_n and_o this_o may_v appear_v by_o our_o saviour_n answer_n to_o they_o as_o it_o be_v set_v down_o matth._n 21._o 21._o now_o hereupon_o our_o saviour_n infer_v this_o exhortation_n have_v faith_n in_o god_n whereby_o he_o do_v withal_o teach_v they_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n by_o which_o they_o may_v come_v to_o be_v partaker_n not_o only_o of_o that_o gift_n and_o power_n of_o miracle_n which_o they_o desire_v but_o also_o to_o obtain_v all_o other_o thing_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n which_o they_o desire_v and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o yea_o though_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v most_o hard_a and_o difficult_a in_o themselves_o to_o be_v obtain_v 2._o that_o this_o be_v the_o sense_n of_o these_o word_n may_v also_o appear_v by_o that_o which_o follow_v ver_fw-la 23_o 24._o where_o our_o saviour_n take_v occasion_n further_o to_o show_v they_o the_o power_n and_o efficacy_n of_o true_a faith_n both_o for_o the_o do_v and_o obtain_v of_o those_o thing_n which_o they_o desire_v though_o never_o so_o hard_a and_o difficult_a quest_n quest_n why_o do_v our_o saviour_n exhort_v his_o disciple_n to_o faith_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n see_v they_o be_v already_o true_a believer_n and_o do_v by_o faith_n put_v their_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o god_n answ_n answ_n because_o their_o faith_n and_o confidence_n in_o god_n be_v as_o yet_o but_o weak_a and_o imperfect_a he_o exhort_v they_o to_o labour_v for_o a_o further_a degree_n and_o measure_n of_o this_o faith_n now_o follow_v the_o instruction_n from_o the_o word_n observe_v 1_o observe_v 1._o when_o peter_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o disciple_n be_v move_v with_o admiration_n at_o the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n in_o curse_v the_o figtree_n etc._n etc._n our_o saviour_n hereupon_o exhort_v they_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o faith_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n thereby_o show_v that_o he_o will_v not_o only_o have_v they_o admire_v and_o wonder_v at_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o miracle_n but_o withal_o to_o make_v a_o holy_a use_n of_o it_o learn_v thereby_o to_o put_v their_o trust_n in_o god_n by_o who_o power_n that_o miracle_n be_v wrought_v hence_o learn_v that_o although_o it_o be_v
