thing_n he_o proceed_v thus_o it_o be_v needless_a christ_n shall_v be_v a_o pattern_n 4._o §._o 4._o of_o our_o justification_n for_o this_o pattern_n must_v be_v of_o use_n either_o unto_o we_o or_o unto_o god_n not_o to_o we_o because_o we_o do_v not_o justify_v ourselves_o not_o to_o god_n because_o he_o need_v no_o pattern_n to_o direct_v he_o rep._n the_o disjunction_n be_v imperfect_a for_o as_o gen._n 17._o 7._o etc._n etc._n do_v also_o speak_v of_o such_o everlasting_a covenant_n as_o we_o know_v be_v not_o without_o beginning_n and_o whereas_o mr._n eyre_n do_v afterward_o acknowledge_v that_o notwithstanding_o this_o covenant_n be_v eternal_a yet_o there_o be_v more_o especial_o three_o period_n of_o time_n wherein_o god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o make_v this_o covenant_n with_o we_o as_o 1._o immediate_o upon_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n 2._o at_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n 3._o when_o god_n bestow_v on_o man_n the_o benefit_n of_o the_o covenant_n if_o we_o be_v covenant_n that_o covenant_n i_o mean_v by_o which_o the_o elect_n be_v save_v take_v proper_o in_o all_o the_o scripture_n forasmuch_o as_o it_o no_o where_o signify_v the_o foresay_a purpose_n a_o thing_n as_o incredible_a and_o abominable_a as_o the_o former_a but_o let_v we_o far_o examine_v this_o undeniable_a truth_n if_o the_o foresay_a 14._o §._o 14._o purpose_n of_o god_n be_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n than_o christ_n do_v not_o obtain_v by_o his_o death_n that_o god_n shall_v make_v a_o covenant_n with_o the_o elect_a but_o the_o consequence_n be_v false_a and_o socinianism_n ergo_fw-la so_o be_v the_o antecedent_n mr._n eyre_n answer_v though_o we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o christ_n procure_v the_o covenant_n he_o may_v have_v add_v and_o therein_o we_o agree_v with_o the_o socinian_o yet_o we_o say_v the_o effect_n of_o the_o covenant_n or_o the_o mercy_n themselves_o be_v all_o of_o they_o obtain_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n as_o justification_n viz._n that_o christ_n merit_v the_o effect_n of_o justification_n not_o the_o act_n even_o as_o he_o merit_v the_o effect_n of_o election_n but_o not_o the_o act_n as_o if_o the_o reason_n be_v the_o same_o between_o a_o particular_a univocal_a cause_n such_o as_o justification_n be_v determine_v to_o a_o particular_a kind_n of_o effect_n which_o cause_n do_v always_o produce_v their_o effect_n immediate_o without_o the_o intervention_n of_o any_o other_o cause_n and_o a_o universal_a cause_n of_o several_a heterogeneous_a effect_n such_o as_o election_n be_v and_o therefore_o produce_v nothing_o but_o by_o the_o sub-serviency_a of_o those_o several_a kind_n of_o cause_n ordain_v to_o their_o several_a kind_n of_o work_n but_o the_o like_a distinction_n here_o between_o the_o covenant_n and_o its_o effect_n be_v of_o worse_a consequence_n if_o i_o mistake_v not_o therefore_o against_o mr._n eyre_n answer_n i_o have_v these_o thing_n to_o object_n 1._o it_o or_o our_o sin_n hinder_v but_o he_o have_v covenant_v before_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n that_o sin_n shall_v not_o hinder_v for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n be_v a_o special_a branch_n of_o the_o covenant_n or_o final_o he_o have_v covenant_v to_o give_v we_o these_o blessing_n through_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o no_o otherwise_o but_o then_o we_o be_v not_o in_o covenant_n before_o the_o consideration_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o beside_o which_o i_o most_o stick_v at_o than_o the_o whole_a reason_n why_o god_n shall_v punish_v his_o dear_a and_o only_a son_n so_o grievous_o be_v this_o it_o be_v his_o pleasure_n so_o to_o do_v but_o sure_o he_o that_o do_v not_o afflict_v man_n mere_o because_o he_o will_v lam._n 3._o 33._o will_v much_o less_o deal_n so_o with_o his_o than_o the_o new-covenant_n be_v never_o a_o whit_n better_o or_o more_o excellent_a than_o the_o old_a the_o first_o covenant_n be_v faulty_a because_o it_o can_v not_o bring_v sinner_n to_o perfect_a happiness_n heb._n 8._o 7_o 8_o 9_o and_o 7._o 19_o rom._n 8._o 3._o if_o the_o new-covenant_n can_v give_v we_o the_o blessedness_n it_o promise_v unless_o christ_n merit_n and_o bring_v
