mark_n of_o election_n therefore_o do_v not_o we_o content_v ourselves_o with_o these_o but_o labour_n for_o true_a inward_a and_o sincere_a sanctification_n salvation_n which_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n in_o one_o thing_n as_o in_o another_o in_o trouble_n as_o well_o as_o in_o prosperity_n unto_o obedience_n and_o sprinkle_v of_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o salvation_n be_v christ_n obedience_n and_o suffering_n and_o his_o obedience_n be_v chief_o in_o the_o offer_n up_o of_o himself_o for_o though_o the_o father_n have_v elect_v we_o to_o salvation_n 19_o and_o make_v we_o happy_a in_o adam_n yet_o we_o wrought_v our_o own_o overthrow_n by_o sin_n 8._o and_o so_o deserve_v the_o curse_n of_o god_n here_o and_o for_o ever_o the_o god_n love_n be_v no_o want_n of_o any_o thing_n needful_a worldling_n indeed_o do_v great_o seek_v after_o wealth_n for_o their_o child_n and_o rejoice_v to_o see_v they_o wealthy_a and_o healthy_a though_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o see_v in_o they_o no_o true_a token_n of_o god_n favour_n but_o alas_o what_o be_v these_o it_o shall_v more_o glad_v we_o to_o see_v a_o humble_a godly_a heart_n turn_v from_o sin_n and_o embrace_a righteousness_n though_o sickly_a and_o poor_a then_o to_o flow_v in_o all_o the_o wealth_n of_o the_o world_n and_o be_v ungracious_a and_o to_o come_v home_o in_o a_o gold_n chain_n or_o to_o hear_v that_o our_o child_n be_v like_o joseph_n the_o second_o man_n in_o the_o kingdom_n without_o grace_n but_o man_n do_v for_o their_o child_n as_o for_o themselves_o labour_v more_o for_o good_n than_o grace_n but_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v to_o those_o minister_n that_o check_v their_o people_n for_o forwardness_n and_o seek_v to_o discourage_v they_o what_o also_o to_o those_o parent_n that_o be_v so_o far_o from_o desire_v grace_n for_o their_o child_n as_o they_o check_v and_o discourage_v they_o for_o their_o forwardness_n thereunto_o such_o will_v like_v they_o rather_o if_o they_o see_v they_o jolly_a as_o the_o world_n 1._o oh_o a_o hard_a part_n of_o parent_n be_v multiply_v he_o desire_v not_o that_o they_o be_v once_o take_v into_o god_n favour_n and_o his_o other_o grace_n begin_v in_o they_o but_o that_o they_o be_v continue_v and_o daily_o increase_v more_o and_o more_o he_o be_v covetous_a to_o have_v his_o spritual_a their_o greatness_n may_v excuse_v they_o and_o that_o this_o subjection_n do_v not_o become_v their_o place_n and_o rank_n whereas_o the_o more_o riches_n the_o more_o greatness_n etc._n etc._n they_o shall_v be_v the_o more_o obedient_a which_o be_v among_o you_o or_o depend_v upon_o you_o here_o note_n 1._o that_o its_o god_n mind_n pastor_n that_o every_o particular_a congregation_n shall_v have_v a_o several_a pastor_n over_o they_o and_o so_o do_v the_o apostle_n take_v order_n in_o their_o time_n 2._o that_o a_o minster_n must_v attend_v to_o that_o charge_n over_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v make_v he_o overseer_n charge_n he_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o other_o flock_n but_o to_o his_o own_o not_o but_o that_o one_o minister_n may_v help_v another_o in_o case_n of_o special_a need_n not_o neglect_v his_o own_o but_o his_o main_a care_n must_v be_v for_o his_o own_o 1._o this_o rebuke_v those_o that_o lie_a in_o university_n 1_o city_n or_o great_a man_n house_n regard_v not_o the_o people_n that_o depend_v on_o they_o their_o people_n depend_v on_o they_o for_o instruction_n comfort_n direction_n etc._n etc._n and_o their_o lip_n shall_v preserve_v knowledge_n now_o if_o they_o be_v dry_a nurse_n well_n without_o water_n they_o do_v but_o deceive_v their_o people_n their_o people_n trust_v to_o a_o break_a reed_n 2._o people_n must_v respect_v those_o minister_n which_o be_v set_v over_o they_o 2._o if_o their_o gift_n be_v competent_a and_o they_o teach_v they_o the_o truth_n they_o must_v not_o dishonour_v they_o but_o pray_v for_o they_o hearten_v they_o frequent_a their_o sermon_n etc._n etc._n as_o minister_n must_v attend_v their_o own_o people_n so_o people_n must_v attend_v their_o own_o minister_n even_o a_o minister_n that_o be_v sincere_a and_o careful_a though_o of_o mean_a gift_n may_v yet_o be_v fit_a to_o do_v good_a in_o his_o own_o place_n then_o a_o stranger_n because_o he_o know_v their_o state_n and_o condition_n best_o and_o we_o may_v also_o look_v for_o god_n blessing_n on_o the_o labour_n of_o such_o as_o poor_a folk_n child_n with_o their_o plain_a and_o slender_a diet_n simile_n be_v yet_o as_o lusty_a well_o like_v strong_a and_o comely_a as_o they_o that_o be_v rich_a have_v all_o abundance_n and_o variety_n man_n must_v not_o say_v i_o can_v edify_v better_o by_o another_o or_o i_o can_v edify_v by_o he_o they_o must_v labour_v to_o edify_v and_o god_n will_v give_v a_o blessing_n if_o at_o other_o time_n other_o help_n be_v offer_v people_n be_v to_o embrace_v they_o and_o be_v thankful_a for_o they_o but_o without_o contempt_n of_o their_o own_o minister_n take_v the_o oversight_n thereof_o flock_n another_o duty_n of_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o preach_v yea_o sound_o and_o diligent_o but_o they_o must_v beside_o take_v a_o particular_a view_n and_o oversight_n of_o their_o flock_n mark_v and_o look_v into_o by_o themselves_o and_o other_o the_o conversation_n and_o behaviour_n of_o their_o people_n 23._o and_o apply_v themselves_o to_o they_o according_o in_o admonition_n 3._o exhortation_n 28._o comfort_n as_o watchman_n they_o must_v continual_o look_v to_o prevent_v simile_n descry_v and_o disappoint_v the_o enemy_n as_o nurse_n they_o must_v not_o only_o feed_v their_o child_n but_o have_v also_o a_o careful_a eye_n over_o they_o shall_v they_o leave_v they_o they_o may_v peradventure_o go_v together_o by_o the_o ear_n scratch_v one_o another_o fall_v into_o the_o fire_n wander_v out_o fall_v into_o the_o water_n etc._n etc._n no_o they_o must_v have_v continual_a work_n with_o they_o as_o to_o take_v they_o up_o be_v fall_v wash_v they_o be_v soul_n chide_v and_o part_v they_o when_o they_o wrangle_v and_o fight_v as_o shepherd_n they_o must_v not_o only_o drive_v or_o lead_v out_o their_o sheep_n to_o pasture_n but_o view_n and_o mark_v they_o at_o go_v out_o and_o come_n into_o the_o fold_n have_v also_o all_o day_n long_v their_o eye_n on_o they_o fetch_v home_o those_o that_o wander_v bind_v up_o those_o that_o be_v hurt_v etc._n etc._n if_o a_o minister_n know_v any_o of_o his_o people_n riotous_a or_o profane_a he_o must_v rebuke_v they_o if_o any_o out_o of_o the_o way_n admonish_v they_o he_o must_v hearten_v they_o that_o be_v in_o a_o good_a course_n to_o go_v on_o still_o and_o must_v comfort_v they_o that_o languish_v under_o their_o sin_n temptation_n and_o fear_n in_o a_o word_n deal_v with_o every_o one_o as_o the_o cause_n require_v as_o they_o say_v of_o a_o beggar_n he_o be_v never_o out_o of_o his_o way_n so_o it_o be_v true_a of_o a_o minister_n in_o his_o own_o parish_n he_o be_v never_o out_o of_o his_o way_n but_o wheresoever_o he_o go_v there_o be_v some_o work_n and_o whosoever_o he_o meet_v with_o he_o have_v something_o to_o say_v to_o he_o if_o he_o be_v a_o riotous_a son_n a_o disobedient_a servant_n a_o idle_a person_n one_o that_o come_v not_o to_o church_n or_o that_o behave_v himself_o rude_o therein_o there_o be_v occasion_n offer_v to_o rebuke_n and_o admonish_v but_o if_o it_o be_v some_o zealous_a christian_a or_o some_o beginning_n to_o wax_v faint_a or_o some_o in_o affliction_n there_o be_v occasion_n offer_v to_o exhort_v and_o comfort_v the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v when_o he_o go_v to_o see_v or_o sit_v with_o any_o of_o his_o people_n whether_o poor_a or_o rich_a and_o among_o those_o he_o may_v find_v some_o stagger_n in_o judgement_n ready_a to_o be_v seduce_v by_o brownist_n papist_n anabaptist_n etc._n etc._n who_o he_o must_v have_v a_o eye_n to_o thus_o he_o may_v help_v his_o public_a ministry_n thus_o prevent_v and_o remedy_v many_o thing_n amiss_o thus_o their_o people_n conscience_n can_v but_o be_v convince_v whereas_o what_o be_v speak_v in_o the_o public_a ministry_n many_o take_v not_o to_o themselves_o thus_o minister_n shall_v know_v the_o better_a how_o to_o preach_v apt_o according_a to_o their_o people_n necessity_n who_o else_o shall_v but_o preach_v general_o and_o uncertain_o his_o ministry_n be_v also_o the_o more_o like_a to_o prevail_v when_o he_o come_v home_o close_a to_o the_o people_n heart_n and_o touch_v their_o very_a fault_n thus_o also_o shall_v he_o know_v the_o better_a who_o to_o admit_v to_o the_o sacrament_n all_o the_o discommodity_n be_v that_o have_v rebuke_v or_o admonish_v man_n of_o any_o fault_n in_o private_a and_o come_v to_o reprove_v such_o thing_n in_o public_a they_o think_v he_o point_v at_o they_o and_o gall_v they_o and_o so_o they_o stomach_n he_o and_o can_v away_o with_o he_o but_o its_o only_a thus_o with_o some_o few_o proud_a person_n or_o rich_a man_n who_o therefore_o must_v have_v the_o less_o say_v to_o they_o in_o private_a and_o that_o they_o shall_v get_v by_o their_o frowardness_n 1._o this_o rebuke_n those_o minister_n that_o be_v absent_a from_o their_o people_n usual_o or_o continual_o 1_o how_o can_v these_o take_v care_n of_o they_o that_o come_v not_o at_o they_o above_o once_o in_o a_o quarter_n except_o they_o can_v indent_v with_o the_o devil_n never_o to_o trouble_v their_o people_n or_o tempt_v they_o in_o their_o absence_n or_o tell_v they_o when_o he_o will_v be_v busy_a with_o they_o etc._n etc._n if_o they_o say_v they_o care_v for_o they_o by_o another_o so_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n by_o another_o but_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o go_v to_o hell_n in_o their_o own_o person_n beside_o either_o he_o be_v fit_a to_o care_n for_o they_o and_o then_o why_o have_v he_o not_o the_o wage_n that_o do_v the_o work_n or_o he_o be_v not_o fit_a
in_o my_o mind_n but_o i_o will_v not_o spend_v any_o time_n to_o approve_v or_o disapprove_v the_o one_o more_o than_o the_o other_o but_o speak_v something_o of_o both_o as_o in_o some_o such_o case_n be_v not_o unusual_a nor_o amiss_o when_o both_o may_v very_o well_o stand_v and_o it_o be_v difficult_a to_o say_v which_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o place_n this_o or_o that_o for_o the_o first_o consist_v the_o duty_n of_o people_n towards_o their_o minister_n lay_v down_o in_o the_o five_o commandment_n stand_v in_o these_o four_o thing_n 1._o they_o must_v reverence_v they_o for_o the_o dignity_n highness_n and_o excellency_n of_o their_o call_v in_o which_o respect_n they_o be_v term_v angel_n star_n the_o light_n of_o the_o world_n 17._o god_n ambassador_n 2._o they_o must_v yield_v obedience_n to_o they_o in_o their_o ministry_n 3._o they_o must_v willing_o allow_v they_o a_o sufficient_a maintenance_n that_o they_o may_v whole_o without_o distraction_n attend_v on_o their_o soul_n 17._o 4._o they_o must_v pray_v for_o they_o both_o that_o their_o ministry_n may_v be_v fruitful_a 18._o and_o that_o they_o may_v long_o continue_v among_o they_o of_o those_o the_o second_o be_v the_o principal_a namely_o that_o people_n must_v submit_v themselves_o to_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n in_o the_o mouth_n of_o their_o minister_n word_n as_o we_o stand_v bind_v to_o preach_v so_o do_v you_o to_o hear_v and_o obey_v for_o bless_a be_v they_o that_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o keep_v it_o 28._o that_o be_v doer_n as_o well_o as_o hearer_n god_n have_v not_o appoint_v we_o to_o preach_v in_o vain_a but_o for_o the_o conversion_n of_o people_n the_o ministry_n be_v ordain_v to_o work_v faith_n to_o convert_v soul_n it_o be_v the_o people_n request_n with_o promise_n to_o hear_v and_o do_v 19_o god_n have_v yield_v and_o sanctify_v it_o to_o be_v the_o only_a ordinary_a mean_n not_o read_v 21._o not_o preach_v by_o a_o angel_n even_o the_o foolishness_n of_o preach_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n to_o save_v they_o that_o believe_v if_o minister_n must_v be_v call_v to_o a_o account_n for_o preach_v shall_v not_o the_o people_n how_o they_o have_v profit_v and_o if_o a_o woe_n to_o we_o if_o we_o preach_v not_o 20._o be_v there_o not_o to_o they_o if_o they_o repent_v not_o for_o this_o cause_n our_o saviour_n upbraid_v those_o city_n wherein_o his_o mighty_a work_n be_v do_v not_o because_o they_o will_v not_o entertain_v he_o nor_o hear_v he_o as_o the_o gadarens_n but_o because_o they_o repent_v not_o of_o reprobation_n as_o in_o eli_n son_n 25._o if_o we_o be_v christ_n sheep_n we_o hear_v his_o voice_n in_o the_o ministry_n and_o follow_v he_o 27._o o_o what_o a_o excellent_a harmony_n will_v this_o make_v if_o minister_n preach_v faithful_o and_o the_o people_n become_v convert_v and_o then_o build_v up_o in_o all_o obedience_n thereby_o 1._o then_o this_o rebuke_v the_o woeful_a whether_o the_o word_n have_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o his_o true_a conversion_n and_o whether_o he_o make_v conscience_n to_o submit_v himself_o to_o the_o precept_n thereof_o they_o that_o can_v prove_v themselves_o thereby_o convert_v how_o comfortable_o may_v they_o go_v on_o walk_v in_o obedience_n thereto_o contrary_o the_o care_n of_o other_o be_v dangerous_a for_o think_v not_o that_o our_o preach_n will_v go_v away_o unregarded_a or_o that_o it_o be_v no_o matter_n how_o you_o have_v hear_v oh_o preach_n and_o sacrament_n be_v dangerous_a thing_n life_n or_o death_n can_v do_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o good_a or_o as_o much_o hurt_n to_o they_o that_o obey_v its_o salvation_n but_o to_o the_o disobedient_a it_o be_v the_o savour_n of_o death_n unto_o death_n this_o be_v a_o fearful_a sin_n in_o this_o land_n and_o the_o cause_n of_o all_o our_o plague_n 21._o by_o reason_n whereof_o we_o may_v fear_v worse_o remember_v the_o woe_n pronounce_v against_o chorazin_n and_o
