of_o god_n elect_n and_o consequent_o that_o christ_n die_v for_o he_o yet_o he_o have_v sufficient_a ground_n of_o hope_n that_o he_o may_v be_v one_o of_o these_o and_o so_o that_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n that_o christ_n may_v have_v dye_v for_o he_o and_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o such_o a_o hope_n as_o this_o he_o have_v encouragement_n sufficient_a to_o apply_v himself_o to_o the_o mean_n of_o believe_a i_o answer_v 1._o that_o such_o a_o hope_n which_o amount_v only_o or_o very_o little_a more_o then_o to_o a_o bare_a apprehend_v possibility_n of_o obtain_v have_v but_o a_o very_a feeble_a and_o faint_a influence_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o consider_a man_n by_o way_n of_o encouragement_n unto_o action_n especial_o unto_o such_o action_n which_o be_v of_o a_o laborious_a and_o difficult_a import_n and_o wherein_o he_o must_v deny_v himself_o in_o matter_n of_o ease_n pleasure_n profit_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o to_o a_o eminent_a degree_n now_o it_o be_v general_o know_v that_o that_o action_n or_o course_n of_o engagement_n wherein_o they_o must_v labour_v and_o exercise_v themselves_o who_o desire_v to_o believe_v unto_o salvation_n be_v of_o such_o a_o import_n as_o we_o speak_v of_o it_o be_v a_o course_n of_o action_n wherein_o man_n must_v put_v forth_o or_o give_v out_o themselves_o with_o all_o their_o heart_n and_o with_o all_o their_o soul_n with_o all_o their_o mind_n and_o with_o all_o their_o strength_n wherein_o they_o must_v labour_v strive_v watch_n and_o pray_v continual_o deny_v themselves_o crucify_v the_o old_a man_n etc._n etc._n or_o otherwise_o not_o expect_v salvation_n 2._o neither_o be_v it_o so_o clear_a a_o truth_n especial_o according_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o those_o against_o who_o we_o now_o argue_v that_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n have_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n of_o hope_n that_o he_o may_v be_v one_o of_o the_o elect._n for_o if_o he_o be_v not_o at_o present_a one_o of_o these_o there_o be_v no_o possibility_n according_a to_o the_o say_a principle_n that_o ever_o he_o shall_v be_v such_o if_o it_o be_v reply_v that_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o assertion_n a_o regenerate_a man_n have_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n of_o hope_n that_o he_o may_v be_v one_o of_o the_o elect_n be_v not_o that_o he_o may_v be_v one_o of_o these_o hereafter_o whether_o he_o be_v one_o of_o they_o at_o present_a or_o no_o but_o that_o he_o may_v be_v one_o of_o they_o at_o the_o present_a i_o answer_v that_o hope_n in_o propriety_n of_o import_n respect_v not_o what_o be_v or_o may_v be_v at_o present_a but_o what_o may_v be_v or_o be_v like_a to_o be_v in_o the_o future_a nor_o do_v i_o remember_v any_o instance_n throughout_o the_o scripture_n where_o they_o make_v or_o suppose_v any_o other_o object_n of_o hope_n but_o only_o that_o which_o be_v or_o may_v be_v future_a nor_o that_o any_o definition_n of_o hope_n give_v by_o learned_a divine_n assign_v any_o other_o so_o that_o it_o be_v very_o improper_a at_o least_o to_o say_v that_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n have_v ground_n of_o hope_n that_o he_o may_v be_v at_o present_a one_o of_o god_n elect._n but_o 3._o a_o little_a to_o indulge_v impropriety_n of_o term_n i_o demand_v whether_o the_o scripture_n do_v not_o constant_o represent_v and_o make_v unregeneracy_n or_o a_o unbelieved_a condition_n especial_o join_v with_o a_o habitual_a practice_n of_o know_a sin_n a_o ground_n of_o fear_n that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o at_o present_a one_o of_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n or_o rather_o whether_o they_o do_v not_o make_v such_o a_o condition_n a_o ground_n of_o certain_a knowledge_n that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o at_o present_a one_o of_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o the_o adverse_a party_n in_o the_o question_n in_o hand_n all_o the_o elect_n shall_v certain_o be_v save_v and_o inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n but_o the_o scripture_n constant_o teach_v and_o affirm_v that_o unbeliever_n and_o unregenerate_a man_n especial_o live_v in_o know_a sin_n shall_v not_o inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n as_o we_o have_v in_o the_o two_o next_o precede_v chapter_n show_v at_o large_a therefore_o unless_o we_o shall_v say_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v divide_v in_o themselves_o it_o be_v unpossible_a to_o show_v or_o prove_v that_o they_o any_o where_n exhibit_v or_o afford_v any_o ground_n of_o hope_n to_o such_o unregenerate_a and_o unbelieved_a person_n as_o we_o now_o speak_v of_o that_o they_o may_v be_v at_o present_a the_o elect_a of_o god_n the_o scripture_n no_o where_o exclude_v the_o elect_a of_o god_n from_o salvation_n but_o every_o where_o assert_n they_o as_o heir_n hereof_o therefore_o those_o who_o it_o exclude_v from_o part_n and_o fellowship_n in_o this_o business_n be_v not_o at_o least_o in_o scripture_n sense_n nor_o indeed_o in_o any_o sense_n consistent_a with_o reason_n the_o elect_a of_o god_n 4._o if_o such_o unregenerate_a person_n as_o we_o speak_v of_o have_v any_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o hope_n that_o they_o may_v be_v at_o present_a the_o elect_a of_o god_n then_o have_v they_o the_o like_a ground_n of_o hope_n that_o they_o be_v at_o present_a of_o this_o number_n and_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o sequel_n be_v plain_a because_o what_o a_o man_n be_v and_o what_o he_o may_v be_v at_o present_a be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v at_o present_a any_o thing_n beside_o or_o any_o other_o than_o what_o he_o be_v at_o present_a no_o subject_n whatsoever_o be_v capable_a of_o any_o otherness_n or_o alteration_n in_o a_o instant_n according_a to_o that_o know_a maxim_n in_o natural_a philosophy_n mâ—tus_fw-la non_fw-la fit_a in_o instanti_fw-la no_o motion_n can_v be_v in_o a_o instant_n of_o time_n as_o also_o that_o other_o quicquid_fw-la est_fw-la quando_fw-la est_fw-la necesse_fw-la est_fw-la esse_fw-la i._n e._n whatsoever_o be_v while_o it_o be_v must_v of_o necessity_n be_v that_o which_o it_o be_v therefore_o he_o that_o have_v ground_n to_o
etc._n etc._n so_o that_o in_o this_o respect_n there_o be_v much_o more_o reason_n why_o in_o the_o place_n in_o question_n he_o shall_v speak_v unto_o they_o or_o consider_v they_o as_o believer_n with_o himself_o then_o as_o elect_a with_o himself_o in_o such_o a_o notion_n of_o election_n wherein_o elect_a be_v distinguish_v from_o believer_n as_o be_v late_o declare_v but_o now_o to_o make_v the_o apostle_n to_o say_v that_o god_n be_v patient_a towards_o we_o believer_n not_o willing_a that_o any_o of_o we_o who_o believe_v shall_v perish_v but_o that_o all_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o repentance_n be_v to_o make_v he_o speak_v beneath_o the_o line_n of_o common_a sense_n for_o 1._o the_o patience_n of_o god_n towards_o believer_n who_o be_v in_o a_o present_a capacity_n of_o salvation_n and_o according_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o our_o adversary_n out_o of_o all_o possibility_n of_o perish_v be_v no_o mean_n of_o their_o non-perishing_a neither_o need_v he_o be_v patient_a towards_o they_o in_o reference_n to_o any_o such_o end_n 2._o neither_o have_v these_o need_n to_o come_v to_o repentance_n in_o order_n to_o their_o non-perishing_a unless_o we_o shall_v suppose_v they_o in_o a_o possibility_n of_o a_o total_a loss_n of_o that_o faith_n that_o be_v in_o they_o yea_o and_o that_o they_o will_v defacto_fw-la total_o lose_v it_o 2._o that_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o in_o the_o place_n in_o hand_n speak_v of_o the_o christian_n to_o who_o he_o write_v as_o they_o be_v elect_a in_o the_o common_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n appear_v from_o hence_o viz._n because_o in_o case_n there_o be_v any_o elect_n in_o this_o sense_n the_o patience_n of_o god_n towards_o they_o will_v be_v no_o argument_n or_o sign_n of_o his_o non-willing_a their_o perish_v or_o of_o his_o willing_a that_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o repentance_n because_o he_o show_v the_o same_o or_o great_a patience_n towards_o such_o person_n who_o be_v not_o elect_a in_o that_o sense_n and_o who_o never_o come_v to_o believe_v or_o repent_v 3._o the_o lord_n be_v not_o here_o say_v to_o be_v not_o willing_a that_o any_o of_o the_o elect_n shall_v perish_v or_o distributive_o and_o sometime_o interrogative_o the_o latter_a universal_o but_o no_o instance_n i_o presume_v can_v be_v find_v where_o either_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o signify_v man_n in_o any_o special_a capacity_n or_o under_o any_o particular_a consideration_n unless_o haply_o it_o be_v where_o such_o capacity_n or_o consideration_n be_v either_o in_o the_o same_o period_n or_o else_o in_o the_o same_o contexture_n of_o speech_n and_o near_o at_o hand_n particular_o mention_v and_o express_v now_o concern_v the_o place_n in_o debate_n certain_a it_o be_v that_o the_o capacity_n or_o consideration_n of_o election_n be_v not_o only_o not_o at_o all_o mention_v or_o specify_v in_o the_o same_o period_n nor_o yet_o in_o the_o same_o passage_n or_o contexture_n of_o scripture_n or_o any_o where_o near_o at_o hand_n but_o not_o so_o much_o as_o in_o all_o the_o epistle_n from_o first_o to_o last_o therefore_o doubtless_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d any_o and_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d all_o do_v not_o here_o signify_v any_o of_o the_o elect_n and_o all_o the_o elect_n but_o any_o man_n and_o all_o man_n 4._o neither_o can_v god_n in_o any_o tolerable_a construction_n or_o propriety_n of_o speech_n or_o sense_n be_v say_v to_o be_v patient_a or_o long-suffering_a towards_o those_o who_o he_o love_v with_o the_o great_a love_n that_o be_v and_o this_o unchangeable_a for_o such_o be_v the_o love_n of_o election_n suppose_v by_o those_o against_o who_o we_o argue_v to_o be_v especial_o if_o it_o be_v suppose_v withal_o which_o these_o man_n suppose_v likewise_o that_o though_o they_o be_v wicked_a yet_o they_o can_v repent_v can_v cease_v to_o be_v wicked_a until_o god_n come_v with_o a_o strong_a and_o irresistible_a hand_n to_o cause_v they_o mention_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d the_o neglect_n or_o contempt_n of_o a_o person_n or_o of_o some_o relate_v to_o he_o as_o always_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o 2._o it_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d arist_n rhet._n 2._o cap._n 2._o which_o description_n if_o need_n be_v we_o may_v show_v to_o be_v very_o agreeable_a to_o what_o the_o scripture_n themselves_o deliver_v concern_v the_o same_o passion_n so_o then_o in_o case_n there_o be_v no_o ground_n or_o reason_n upon_o which_o god_n can_v judge_v himself_o or_o any_o of_o he_o neglect_v or_o despise_v by_o the_o impenitency_n of_o his_o elect_n in_o their_o sinful_a way_n while_o they_o continue_v in_o they_o he_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v patient_a or_o long-suffering_a towards_o they_o though_o he_o forbear_v to_o punish_v they_o with_o death_n for_o it_o now_o when_o that_o only_o be_v do_v by_o a_o man_n which_o he_o be_v either_o in_o one_o kind_n or_o other_o necessitate_v to_o do_v and_o can_v possible_o refrain_v most_o absolute_a and_o perfect_a knowledge_n which_o god_n have_v of_o every_o particular_a circumstance_n from_o the_o least_o to_o the_o great_a of_o all_o the_o action_n and_o way_n of_o all_o the_o providential_a administration_n of_o god_n in_o the_o world_n as_o well_o of_o justice_n as_o of_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n be_v found_v and_o frame_v hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n conclude_v in_o a_o posture_n of_o admiration_n that_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n be_v unsearchable_a and_o his_o way_n past_o find_v out_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o riches_n of_o that_o knowledge_n which_o he_o make_v use_v of_o in_o form_v they_o meaning_n that_o no_o creature_n who_o know_v not_o as_o much_o as_o god_n himself_o know_v concern_v the_o ground_n and_o reason_n why_o he_o order_v the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n of_o person_n of_o city_n of_o country_n of_o age_n as_o he_o do_v and_o not_o otherwise_o can_v possible_o understand_v or_o comprehend_v the_o absolute_a exactness_n and_o accurateness_n of_o they_o how_o ever_o he_o may_v apprehend_v somewhat_o yea_o much_o of_o they_o i_o mean_v chief_o concern_v the_o equity_n and_o righteousness_n of_o they_o again_o 2._o these_o judgement_n and_o way_n of_o god_n be_v unsearchable_a and_o past_a 17._o §._o 17._o find_v out_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o riches_n of_o that_o wisdom_n which_o be_v in_o god_n according_a unto_o which_o also_o they_o be_v all_o calculate_v and_o form_v by_o he_o for_o look_v as_o in_o a_o judge_n who_o be_v to_o administer_v justice_n and_o to_o give_v sentence_n in_o the_o cause_n of_o man_n that_o be_v bring_v before_o he_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o a_o perfect_a knowledge_n of_o the_o respective_a case_n wherein_o he_o be_v to_o give_v sentence_n in_o all_o circumstance_n relate_v to_o they_o before_o he_o do_v give_v sentence_n 2._o a_o principle_n of_o wisdom_n to_o weigh_v and_o ponder_v aright_o every_o of_o these_o case_n in_o all_o their_o circumstance_n respective_o that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o form_v such_o a_o sentence_n wherein_o every_o circumstance_n great_a and_o small_a relate_v to_o every_o case_n may_v have_v its_o due_a consideration_n and_o weight_n so_o there_o be_v and_o of_o necessity_n must_v be_v in_o god_n to_o make_v he_o a_o absolute_a judge_n as_o he_o be_v of_o all_o the_o world_n 1._o
